Walking the talk

Daily images of the war in Ukraine and of people suffering all around the World first prompted 68-year-old ex SAS officer Tony Williams, to walk 100km around the 1km Karori Park track last Friday and Saturday.

He “knocked the bugger off” in 23 hours.

Also, having observed the plight of veterans and first responders on leaving the services, feeling discarded and abandoned and often suffering PTSD, Tony felt there was an opportunity to engage them in the process of helping others’ as a way of giving them back a mission and purpose in their lives.

This helped form the Kaupapa that Tony intends to pursue from now on.

While on one of his five terms in the army, Tony was part of the deployment to East Timor in October 1999.

He was the first Officer Commanding the Forward Surgical Team (FST) as part of the 1st Royal New Zealand Infantry Battalion.

Tony has a million motivators for NZ walk Continued from page 1.

Just down the road from the Battalion HQ based at Suai, close to the border with Indonesia, he noticed a clinic that had been set up by Médecins Sans Frontieres (‘Doctors Without Borders).

Not only were the staff all volunteers, they were unarmed and ‘neutral’.

Their neutrality has not always protected them and MSF staff have been killed in the service of others’ in the world’s trouble spots.

From that time, Tony has been inspired by their courage and respects their mission and has decided his mission for 2022 is to help them by raising $1 million Now ‘A Walk in the Park’ has been completed, Tony and his support team of veterans and first responders are preparing for Tony to Walk New Zealand.

The walk will kick off in Bluff on Monday July 25.

Tony plans to walk 30km a day following SH1, for six days a week, resting and catching up with supporters each Friday, and hoping to be at Cape Reinga on his 69th birthday, October 24.

Part of the inspiration for the walk is late ex-Regular Force Army Officer Major Alby Kiwi, who ran the length of New Zealand to raise funds for the National Army Museum in 1978.

Both Alby and Tony were Regular Force Cadets, (1958,1969- 71), both were Officer Cadet School Portsea, Australia graduates, both

Infantry and SAS. Alby served in Borneo, Malaysia and Vietnam and Tony in Singapore, Malaysia and East Timor.

Tony used to run marathons with his ‘boss’ on Saturdays at Burnham Camp and learned all about “having a focus on the mission, persistence, and never giving in”.

“I will be thinking of Alby as I pass the NAM around September,” says Tony.

The Karori resident admitted having some nerves prior to his walk.

“Aside from my SAS selection and the Coast to Coast, I have not walked 50km in years and as a 68-year-old was a bit nervous whether or not my body could handle it.

“I was advised by others to walk only 50km, but decided if you are going to climb the mountain, you go for something big. This is my Everest.”

To plan the 100km walk, Tony had to set goals with one being to walk 50km by midnight.

It did not all go to plan as that goal was realised at 1am. Another thing he struck was what marathoners call ‘hitting the wall’.

“I was sore and damn tired already when the sun came up,” he says.

“I still had 35km left!”

His support staff however had been there from the outset and spurred him on.

remarkable 45km.

“Together with other supporters including my wife Carmelle, I often had company, while Carmelle and an old army mate Dereck Turvey also provided amazing support in walking with me and managing the logistics with food and hot drinks.

“Without them and the help of many others’, I couldn’t have achieved it.”

Tony also said Mayor Andy Foster had been greatly supportive and Glenda Schmidt and the Café operators at the Karori Park Sports Club helped by enabling him to use the venue which saved the day and night.

Asked what it felt like doing the final lap, Tony said it felt like the hardest thing he ever had to do in his life at the time.

“The last 35km was definitely a challenge.

“The final lap seemed to go on forever but I would have crawled over broken glass to get there if I had to.”

So now, back to training and on to the main mission in July.

“We still need someone to sponsor us by providing a six-berth mobile home to be our home for three months on the road,” says Tony.

“The rest we will manage with the help of generous sponsors who want to help the cause.”

Tom goes on the front-foot for cricket equipment Onslow junior cricket player Tom Coulter wants to help more young cricketers keep playing cricket.

The 12-year-old cricket nut has recently completed a cricket equipment drive at his school, encouraging fellow students to donate old cricket gear they no longer use to be donated to children who may not be able to afford it.

Tom said he was motivated to do the equipment drive after researching the costs of cricket gear and where it came from.

“I noticed that most cricket gear comes from overseas, none of it really comes from New Zealand, which make it more expensive,” Coulter said.

“As you get older it gets more and more expensive and when you’re quite young, you grow so quickly, so every season you need new gear.

“I wanted to donate old cricket gear so that other kids could use it so that the cost of cricket gear doesn’t become a barrier to playing.”

The project, a part of Tom’s

Year 6 curriculum centered around taking action to make meaningful change, was a resounding success with three bags of old cricket gear donated to Cricket Wellington, including bats, balls, gloves, and cricket shoes.

Tom, who plays for Onslow Junior Cricket Club, was overwhelmed with the amount of equipment donated and hoped it would keep more kids playing cricket.

“I’d like to keep doing stuff like this and maybe clubs and schools could also do it so more people can keep playing cricket,” he said.

“Sport makes me happy, so the more I can do to help other people have the same opportunities to play that I have, the better.”

Last year Cricket Wellington, along with several other sports organisations in Wellington, partnered with Nuku Ora and the Wellington City Mission to help deliver four Community Sports Banks around Wellington.

inbrief news Town Hall project costs increase The projected budget for the earthquake strengthening of Wellington’s Town Hall – one of the most complex construction projects in Aotearoa - has increased from $145.3 million to $182.4 million.

The Town Hall was declared quakeprone in 2009, it was closed in 2013 following the Seddon earthquake, with strengthening work starting in 2019.

The quake-strengthening project involves lifting and propping the building to install new base isolators (flexible pads that reduce shaking in an earthquake) and extensive deep piling, while having to protect and restore the fabric of the category 1 heritage-listed building.

Onslow College pupils were the first lot of secondary school students across the country to have insight into the legacies of our nation’s last 100 years, captured in a book that explores the stories of 101 remarkable objects, written mostly by staff at the National Library, and which will be used as a resource alongside the new compulsory Aotearoa history curriculum.

Every New Zealand secondary school will be sent a copy of Te Kupenga – 101 Stories of Aotearoa from the Turnbull, edited by Turnbull’s Chief Librarian Chris Szekely and Michael Keith, the publication of which marks 100 years of one of the country’s most prestigious national institutions.

Te Kupenga was the result of a Turnbull Endowment Trust centenary initiative, funded through the New Zealand Lottery Grants Board to ensure all 530 secondary schools across New Zealand receive a donated copy.

The book includes tributes to some of Aotearoa’s biggest moments – the Rainbow Warrior and the Springbok Tour – as well as stories of personal and unusual trinkets: a Japanese soldier’s diary; the rock that punctured a tyre on the first car journey to Aoraki Mount Cook in 1906; an 18th century, 7cm globe made from paper mache, purchased from an antiquarian bookseller, and more recently a Covid-19 poster taken from one of the government’s very first pandemic announcements at the library, signed by Dr Ashley Bloomfield.

“We were mindful that the introduction of the NZ histories curriculum was imminent and that it would be an invaluable resource at the secondary school level, which is why the Trust went the extra mile to ensure that the book would be available in every NZ secondary school library.

Additionally, a new online presence has been created by Services to Schools at the National Library, which expands on these stories, linking them to other related items and supporting resources.

We invite every student with interest in our heritage to use the resources of the Alexander Turnbull Library, to access and formulate their interpretation of this evidence.”

MacLachlan says feedback from teachers already indicates that they see the book, complemented by the Te Kupenga online presence, as a valuable resource for teaching Aotearoa New Zealand’s history.

“The Alexander Turnbull li-

brary truly is a treasure trove of collections; documents, letters, journals, and portraits.

It’s also been instrumental in helping settle treaty claims. The Trust supports access to, and interpretation of the Turnbull collections, ensuring that our stories and documentary heritage are available to all. Young New Zealanders are a particularly important audience and deserve the opportunity to learn about their country and its history.”

Upon his death in 1918, Turnbull, unmarried and with no children, gifted his substantial book collection to be part of a national collection, and in 1920 the Alexander Turnbull library opened on Bowen Street in Wellington.

In 1965 it was incorporated into the National Library and in 1987 it moved to an amalgamated site on Molesworth Street.

Since 1920, more than 60,000 New Zealanders have followed Turnbull’s lead and placed their treasures into the library’s care as a research legacy for future generations.

his mother’s great grandmother, Sophia Gray (NJƗruahine) or Te Paea Hinerangi, who once met Alexander Turnbull when she was a tour guide for visitors of the pink and white terraces at the central plateau. When Mt Tarawera erupted, destroying the terraces in 1886, Sophia rescued people and gave them shelter at her whare.

Szekely says that The Turnbull Library is a storehouse of evidence that will help connect young Kiwis to their heritage and history.

Stars align for Matariki ki Poneke in capital this year The capital will celebrate the MƗori New Year with Matariki ki Pǀneke – a series of events, projections and experiences for the whole whƗnau to enjoy.

This year’s Matariki festival, and its underlying message of renewal, is more important than ever, says Mayor Andy Foster.

“This is going to be a significant event as we celebrate the first time New Zealand has had a public holiday commemorating it.

“The exciting programme is designed to raise awareness and education around Matariki, Te Ao MƗori and Wellington’s unique stories and landscape with engaging and entertaining experiences – utilising some of the best and brightest talent from around the capital.”

Councillor Jill Day (NgƗti Tnjwharetoa) says Matariki being recognised as a public holiday is another significant advance for equality in Aotearoa.

“We now have a MƗori Ward in Pǀneke, the 7Ɨkai Here partnership agreement between mana whenua groups and Council, we’ve recently adopted the TnjSiki Ora 0ƗRUL Strategy, and now we have a recognised public holiday celebrating the MƗori New Year.

“There is a lot to be proud of, but still a long way to go – in the meantime, let’s come together with tamariki, friends and whƗnau this Matariki to remember, reflect, connect, kǀrero, enjoy kai, and embrace ahi NƗ, toi mahi and te ao MƗori.”

The Matariki ki Pǀneke Ahi KƗ experience will be based around the Wellington waterfront and Te NgƗkau Civic Square from Thursday 23 – Sunday 26 June between 6pm - 9pm each evening.

The event starts shortly after 9pm on the steps to the Tangi Te Keo Mt Victoria lookout with a karakia before mana whenua ignite a torch from a beacon and ascend to the lookout.

The torch is handed to Mayor Andy Foster, and former Governors-General The Right Honourable Sir Anand Satyanand and Lieutenant General The Right Honourable Sir Jerry Mateparae who are long-standing Rotarians and are representing Rotary. Together they will light the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Beacon.

A special choir – comprising

of Wellington-based choirs Supertonic and Pacific Connection – will then sing A Song for the Commonwealth, a piece specially commissioned with the chorus in te reo. The event is scheduled to end before 9.30pm.

The event is private due to the very limited space. The lookout and carparks at the top of Mt Victoria will be closed to the public for the event from 11am on Wednesday 1 June till 11pm on Thursday.

The public are invited to view the ceremony which will be livestreamed on QueensPlatinumJubilee/livestream Mayor Foster says Queen Elizabeth II personified loyalty, dedication and a deep sense of duty to her people throughout her life.

The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee will also be marked in Wellington with the Michael Fowler Centre and Carter Fountain being floodlit purple – the MFC between the hours of 6pm and 6am on 3-6 June, and the Carter Fountain on the night of Thursday 2 June.

Purple is considered the colour of royalty. It was also the colour of choice for the Purple Robe of Estate worn by Queen Elizabeth II on her way back to Buckingham Palace following her coronation in 1953.

the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee will on 10 June see Deputy Mayor Sarah Free lead a group of invited guests, including representatives from Commonwealth countries, along a section of Wellington’s Commonwealth Walkway.

The walkway features bronze markers attached to the ground which identify points of significance. They feature Her Majesty the Queen Elizabeth’s EIIR cypher.

The walkway was established in 2015 to mark the 150th anniversary of Wellington becoming New Zealand’s capital city.

Blue Dragon Book Fair raises record in Ngaio Community support for the 12th Blue Dragon Book Fair, held over the weekend in the Ngaio Town Hall, meant a record $22,145 was raised for the Blue Dragon Children’s Trust NZ.

All of this money has been sent to Blue Dragon Children’s Centre in Hanoi to support its work saving young lives through education and training, and fighting child trafficking.

More than $22,000 was raised by the Blue Dragon Book Fair at the Ngaio Town Hall over the weekend.

HWPL’s 9th Annual Commemoration of the Declaration of World Peace: Realisation of the collective spirit towards peace On May 28, 2022, a virtual conference was held by HWPL New Zealand to commemorate the ninth anniversary of the Declaration of World Peace, attended by about 100 people from local religious, youth, and civil society groups working for peace.

The host organization, Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light (HWPL), proclaimed the Declaration of World Peace back in 2013. The declaration calls for the endorsement of national leaders, engagement of women and youth, cooperation among civil societies, and expansion of media coverage on peace.

Later, it was developed into the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War (DPCW) as a process to establish international legal instruments for global peace.

Participants at Saturday’s event watched highlights from the global online event held on May 25 and were given updates on +:3/¶V SHDFH ZRUN H൵RUWV ZLWK GLYHUVH partners to realize the collective will for Peace.

The MC of the event thanked the VIPs who attended the event on Saturday morning and mentioned the words of Young Min Chung, the General Director of IPYG, an affiliate group of HWPL, “730,000 citizens from 176 countries have signed in support of the DPCW [Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War] over the past nine years which allows them to express their opinions in the most direct way.

Recently, the IPYG has been running the Youth Empowerment Peace Workshop (YEPW), where they discuss topics such DV HGXFDWLRQ KXPDQ ULJKWV DQG FRQÀLFW

and conduct joint action as well as policy proposals.”

The ninth annual commemoration of the Declaration of Peace event ended with a message of peace from Chairman Man Hee Lee of HWPL on collaboration for peacebuilding. “This time (Russia) invaded Ukraine and started the war.

This is why HWPL and families of peace have long called for the establishment of international law to prevent potential wars.

So, we gathered experts in international law globally … and made the declaration with 10 articles and 38 clauses.” he said.

Murray Stentiford, Former President of Theosophical Auckland Society, expressed his enjoyment of the event, and that it had been well executed. ‘I could see that a lot of preparation has gone into to it,’ he said. ‘When looking at the progress made around the world with the various initiatives of HWPL it gives me a lot of encouragement and is fascinating seeing the various countries involved. World Peace has been in my prayers, and I look forward to the discussion at our next WARP 2൶FH ¶ HWPL has been developing global cooperation for peace both at the international level and at the national level by garnering the support of international organizations for the DPCW and working hand in hand to reinforce international norms to realize peace. One of the key considerations that need to be worked through for stage two is the continuation of reliable fluoridate of drinking water if a facility fails or needs to be taken offline for maintenance. The current configuration of a single fluoride facility at each of the water treatment plants has no back-up option.

“Today’s funding decision is crucial as it allows us to move with certainty and confidence to restore fluoridation to the drinking water for Upper Hutt, Porirua, Wellington City, Stokes Valley, and Manor Park,” says Wellington Water Chief Executive Colin Crampton.

“This funding allows Wellington Water to resume fluoridation at the Gear Island and Te Marua plants and increase the reliability of the plants that continue to dose at Wainuiomata and Waterloo.

“Critical to restoring fluoridation at Gear Island and Te Marua is building new standalone facilities that will replace the current older facilities. These new facilities will be more reliable than the existing equipment and can be repurposed for the second stage works.”

Wellington Water says the timing for restoring fluoridation is dependent on the international supply of equipment.

Once it has firm times for the delivery of equipment it will advise of the of the resumption of fluoridation.

Greater Wellington has approved a $6 million capital funding request from Wellington Water to restore fluoride to drinking water at the Te Marua and Gear Island Water Treatment Plants and review and upgrade fluoridation facilities at Wainuiomata and Waterloo.

The funding is the first part of a twostage strategy to upgrade fluoridation facilities throughout Wellington.

Its initial focus is on restoring fluoridation, with the second stage ensuring Wellington Water can meet more stringent Ministry of Health fluoride requirements which will come into force from 1 July 2022.

Under the Ministry’s new standards, at least 95 per cent of water leaving treatment plants must be dosed. Wellington Water is working on a strategic business case to ensure the requirements can be met and a further funding request will be made for stage two upgrades for the next financial year.

“This is an investment in regional public health”, says Greater Wellington Chair Daran Ponter. “The community expects us, through Wellington Water, to fluoridate drinking water at the right levels, and that’s what the new funding will achieve.

Greater Wellington is urging dog owners to keep their dogs away from the Hutt River and Wellington Harbour beaches until staff have checked these areas for dead possums poisoned with 1080.

Recent heavy rain from early morning, Tuesday 31 May 2022, may have washed dead possums, poisoned with 1080, down the Hutt River and into Wellington Harbour. This is as a result of a possum control operation on Friday 27 May 2022 in the Kaitoke Regional Park and the Hutt Water Collection Area.

Greater Wellington are erecting warning signs and checking beaches from Petone right through to Pencarrow. Once the level of the Hutt River has gone down, staff will check both sides for possum carcasses from Te M rua to Petone.

Greater Wellington Biosecurity Manager Richard Romijn said that any dead possums aren’t a threat to people but would still be poisonous to dogs.

“While people aren’t at risk from these poisoned carcasses, we take the threat to dogs

very seriously. We’re putting up warning signs along beaches at Petone and the eastern side of the harbour from today (Tuesday 31 May) and along the Hutt River as soon as the water level has dropped.

“We urge dog owners to avoid all eastern harbour beaches from Petone to Pencarrow, and the Hutt Riverbed. Anyone walking their dog near the harbour beaches and Hutt Riverbed should keep their animals close on a lead and not allow them to scavenge, until warning signs have been taken down”.

This warning to dog owners could be in place for up to four months, depending on how long it takes for the possum carcasses to breakdown.

If dogs have any contact with a dead possum in the vicinity of those risk areas, owners should get their dog to vomit and take it to a vet immediately.

NZ Army to fire 21 gun salute The New Zealand Army will fire a 21-gun salute in Wellington at midday on Thursday 2 June, marking the anniversary of the coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. A second gun salute will be fired on 6 June, to mark the Queen’s official birthday (as observed in New Zealand). The official birthday is traditionally observed on the first Monday of June.

More Cuba Street businesses giving parklets a go Three Cuba Street businesses got a taste of what it’s like to have some extra outdoor space over autumn, and now another three are giving it a go.

We knew there were local businesses keen to try transforming an adjacent car parking space or two into places where people could meet for a coffee, eat or spend time relaxing, so we developed a kit of materials that can be easily moved to make trialling that experience possible.

Rather than imagining what it might be like, it’s an easy way to see the difference a change like this makes to a neighbourhood.

Trial parklets have been in place outside Fred’s Sandwiches, Duck Island Ice Cream and Loretta for the past couple of months and have now been moved and set up near Dirty Burger, Santeria and Fidel’s Cafe. They’ll be there for about two months and then relocated.

These types of small outdoor spaces work well in cities worldwide and have already been successfully trialled in Newtown, Allen and Marion Streets and other parts of Cuba Street.

While not every location is suitable, parklets can bring more people, vitality and activity to a street while leaving footpaths clear for people passing through. They can also add

more plants, art, seating, and bike or scooter parking to a neighbourhood, supporting zero or low carbon ways of moving around the city.

James Pedersen, co-owner of Loretta, says the parklet trial helped provide extra profile for their business and a better connection to the street.

“It gives Wellingtonians great spaces to enjoy the sun without having to travel down to the waterfront for example. It also makes the street less car-focussed and more people friendly.

“We’re definitely keen to explore making some outdoor space adjacent to the business more permanent.”

James says trials like this challenge and alter perceptions around the value of street space.

“We see using street space this way as potentially much more valuable and beneficial to businesses, our customers, and people who use this area, than having it occupied by parked cars.”

He’s keen to keep talking with Council staff about ways to make creating outdoor spaces even easier for businesses by for instance having approved barriers or planter boxes that can be easily incorporated into designs.

There isn’t a lot of seating or rest areas at this end of Cuba, so it was good to see.”

We’re keen to collaborate with more businesses keen to trial a parklet, and we’re also working with

businesses interested in investing in longer-term street changes.

As an incentive, and one of the ways we’re supporting businesses through COVID times, is by not charging any fees for the use of street space approved for parklets until at least March 2023.

Since the fee-free offer was announced in March, we’ve had 15 applications for more permanent outdoor spaces. Two, outside Mockingbird in Courtenay Place and Nolita in Cuba Street, are complete, and another four have been approved.

So expect to see more taking shape over coming months and more places

to relax outside next summer.

Information and a design guide are available on the Council’s website so interested businesses can work out if an area near them could be used for a parklet.

As parklets are usually adjacent to a traffic lane, lots of things are considered to make sure a location and design is going to be safe and suitable. Council staff will be available to help anyone interested, and in places where parklets are an option, the aim is to provide approval for them within seven to 10 days so businesses can get them in place as quickly as possible.

Busker’s legacy acknowledged with plaque and exhibition Kenny the Busker will be immortalised with a plaque installed in Courtenay Place and his controversial amplifier going on display in an exhibition at Wellington Museum’s The Attic this week.

During last year’s 10-year anniversary of the death of the busker John D’Estaing Adams aka Kenny, his amplifier was officially handed over by City Archives to the Wellington Museum to house the item that made the local identity a household name.

Kenny’s amplifier was confiscated numer-

ous times following complaints from nearby residents, leading to an on-going stoush between the busker and Wellington City Council in the late 1990s.

As part of the anniversary, Councillor Fleur Fitzsimons wanted to recognise the colourful character with a plaque near the site he used to play.

“Many Wellingtonians will have memories of Kenny the Busker, he was a significant part of the city, adding to the diversity and vibrancy of the Courtenay Place area.

Kenny the Busker will be immortalised with a plaque installed in Courtenay Place and his controversial amplifier going on display in an exhibition at Wellington Museum’s The Attic this week.

“His legacy will continue with this plaque installed on a bench outside the Reading Centre on Courtenay Place, and with his amplifier on display at the Wellington Museum, giving a whole new generation an appreciation of the man and the entertainer.”

Even without his amp he continued to engage Wellingtonians with his PR campaign to get it back, creating flyers and a petition which was given to then-Mayor Mark Blumsky.

Mr Blumsky, who now resides in Niue, says there were two sides to the debate.

“Not only did he wake up the inner-city residents, and motivate the public into mailing and calling the Mayoral Office, but he also woke up the world to the potential and the magic of Courtenay Place.

“Thank you Kenny for the memories!”

Born in Texas in 1946, the actor, singer and musician, moved to Wellington in 1992 to fulfil his commitment to missionary work, and combined his vocation with his love of music by performing in the city most evenings.

Wellington Mayor Andy Foster says it’s good Kenny’s amp has found a final resting place after being stashed under a desk at Council and, most recently, stored at the City

Archives.

“Kenny was a divisive character in the city but most Wellingtonians over the age of 40 will have some sort of a memory of him.

“I knew Kenny well and talked with him frequently. I even had calls from his family in the USA. “You can debate the noise issues, you can question his musical prowess, but one thing is clear, Kenny had charm and charisma and became an icon in his adopted city of Wellington. “He was an entertainer. He was sadly missed when he left us too early. We’re pleased to be bringing people together to celebrate that combined experience.

“Aptly, a rendition of Kenny’s trademark song – The Gambler – will be performed at the Wellington Museum and all those present will be encouraged to join in. It will amp up the atmosphere and along with the plaque and the museum exhibit, there can hardly be a more fitting tribute to Kenny,” adds Mayor Foster.

John D’Estaing Adams aka Kenny died June 8, 2011, aged 64. Mr Blumsky, then-City Councillor Foster and a number of Council officers attended the funeral to pay tribute to the man and his memory.

New exhibition connects Courtenay Place with Te Aro Pa past The latest exhibition in Wellington’s Courtenay Place light boxes connects the current urban Courtenay Place environment with its Te Aro PƗ past.

“How do we protect and enhance the mauri within an urban environment?” asks Te Whanganui-a-Tara based MƗori indigenous artist Tanya Te Miringa Te Rorarangi Ruka in her outdoor exhibition Whakapapa Te Pǀ Te Ao. Running for Matariki 2022 until 18 September, Whakapapa Te Pǀ Te Ao turns the light boxes into a series of digitally woven pouwhenua which are derived from the natural Te Aro and the local environment.

The exhibition acknowledges the whenua (land) and awa (streams) above and below the city streets.

“Past, present, and future coexist within the whenua,” says

Tanya. “Our tnjpuna (ancestors) hold our collective memory, the good and the bad, the light and the dark. We are alive because of them, by acknowledging this truth we enhance the mauri (life-force), and we build our relationships with the natural world even within an urban environment.”

Whakapapa Te Pǀ Te Ao responds to Matariki as a time to recount the past seasons and set new plans for the coming year.

Guided by the Maramataka, the MƗori lunar calendar, Tanya filmed the area surrounding the light boxes once a month during 2021.

Her key consideration was how we experience the three major awa sources – the Waitangi, Knjmutoto, and Waimapihi streams that were once a source of kai and are now below the city streets.

She translated her video imagery into digital weavings for the light boxes. One side of the light boxes image references Te Whakapapa o Te Pǀ and the other, Te Whakapapa o Te Ao. Together, the whakapapa of light and dark capture a story of time unfolding in Courtenay Place from a kaupapa MƗori perspective.

Tanya’s light boxes mahi is interwoven with a number of her other projects.

The Community RongoƗ (MƗori medicinal) Forest, based in Elliott Park, Brooklyn, is a concept she developed last year.

RongoƗ leaves were used in the project ‘The Forest RongoƗ Teahouse’, where she served traditional MƗori medicinal tea amidst photographic and video artworks in a temporary space along Courtenay Place.

Tea leaves for the tea that will be served at the blessing and opening of her Courtenay Place light boxes exhibition, on Saturday 28 May at 2pm, will also come from the forest.

Tanya, with Ollie Hutton from Mouthful, has also been commissioned by Urban Dream Brokerage to curate eight independent moving artworks screening across eight weeks of winter, named Te wƗhi o te papa whakƗta.

This work will be displayed across from the light boxes, in the window of 106 Courtenay Place during June and August.

Messy contracts and clubs in the NRL It’s been a rough couple of weeks for the New Zealand Warriors as fans are left wondering if NRL contracts are worth the paper they are printed on.

The NRL franchise continues to be stuck playing games in Australia as their muddling, going nowhere season was beautifully encapsulated in their 24-18 defeat to the equally stuck in the mud St George Illawarra Dragons last week.

However, it’s the stuff off the field which should be concerning fans.

Firstly, young half Chanel Har-

ris-Tevita claiming he wants a break from rugby league at the end of the season.

That’s not a glowing endorsement for club culture and it’s not like Shaun Johnson has impressed at all so far in part because he refuses to run at the defensive line with ball in hand.

Combine that with the latest revelation the club gave departed forward Matt Lodge a $766,000 “golden handshake” after letting him out of his last 18 months of the contract.

The Daily Telegraph claimed

Lodge was given a $AU700,000 golden handshake by the club.

The newspaper also reports the NRL has ruled the money must be included in the Warriors’ salary cap for the remainder of this season and next.

The reason for Lodge’s departure, just like Euan Aitken who at least is playing out this season, he couldn’t see himself playing in New Zealand.

Imagine the stupidity of both Lodge and the Warriors in signing a contract as a New Zealand franchise but never having any

intent in playing in said country.

Speculation is he had an argument with ownership, but even so, the outcome is a shambles.

The Warriors will be returning to New Zealand on a permanent basis next year, and Lodge confirmed that was a factor in the decision for the two parties to part ways.

“I couldn’t see my family living in New Zealand for a long-term future,” Lodge admitted.

It’s utterly embarrassing for the Warriors and pedals the notion that they are inept.

Rumours continue to swirl about the team’s best attacking player’s future, Reece Walsh despite the teenage fullback saying he is here to stay.

All of this comes on the back of Broncos Star forward Payne Haas who has asked for his release from a contract he signed worth an estimated $800,000 a year through 2024 because he wants to get paid more, as he believes his value has increased.

The Broncos, quite rightly, have declined the request.

We’ll see how long that lasts.

Hawks outlast Wainuiomata for crucial win Johnsonville kept their top eight chances alive with an important 18-13 win over Wainuiomata in their Swindale Shield rugby match at Helston Park on Saturday.

The Hawks were in front for much of the game but were forced to work hard for their fourth win of the season.

The win means it is the first time since 2005 that Johnsonville has managed four Swindale Shield wins in a season.

Coach Jason Adamson says he is thrilled his team could “win the arm wrestle” while also pointing out Wainuiomata played well.

“I thought we played well and kept our composure to win a tight one,” he says.

“I thought Wainui were really impressive at times and pushed us back at times.”

Wainuiomata had the services of All Black and Hurricanes midfielder Peter Umaga-Jensen.

Johnsonville played into the wind

and the sun in the first half against visitors Wainuiomata, and they scored the first try of the game inside 5 minutes when first five Levi Grace provided a short pass to lock Serge Hollis, who drew his man and sent right wing Jed Mitchell away in the corner.

Wainuiomata hit back almost straightaway, from a scrum on Johnsonville’s 22, fullback Jason Love injecting himself into the line and passing to wing Niko Patelesio to score their first try to make it 5-5.

The flow of the game soon slowed down, with both sides missing penalties over the next 20 minutes, before Johnsonville re-took the lead with their second try following a break in general play to Mitchell, some nice interplay by locks Hollis and Tayne Laird-Mahu and then a try out wide to fullback Jacob Walmsley.

tipping on to fullback Love to score. The conversion missed, as Johnsonville took a 12-10 lead into halftime.

Wainuiomata then took the lead about 10 minutes into the second

half through a Tyler Tane penalty. It was short-lived though, as a penalty to halfback Mark Sutton put the Hawks back in front 15-13.

Sutton then kicked a second penalty with about 15 minutes to play

to make it 18-13 to Johnsonville, following a big run down field by himself.

Johnsonville will travel to Nairnville Park on Saturday to take on high-flyers Old Boys’ University.

Petone power past North Wellington

Hold the phone. It was anything but situation normal when round 9 of 18 played out in the Men’s Central Football League over the weekend.

Merlin Luke-Miny notched up his ninth goal for Waterside Karori and in doing so, retained top gun status for the Golden Boot award alongside Jack-Henry Sinclair from Wellington Olympic.

The lone goal was not enough though as Waterside ultimately went down 3-1 to Western Suburbs at Karori Park on Saturday.

Bottom placed Wellington United kept their spot, just, despite a very important but un-

predicted 1-0 home win against Wellington Phoenix Reserves.

Only goal difference saved TFS North Wellington from the wooden spoon as they crashed to a 3-1 loss at the hands of Petone at Memorial Park. Much could be said for Norths dominating both halves and looking every inch the winning team, but talk is cheap and goals were scarce, even though Norths were sitting pretty at 1-0 up going into the sheds. Ihaia Delaney converted Ahmed Othman’s cross just three minutes from half time, but Petone sunk all hopes when they scored after an hour play, converted a penalty at 86 minutes and rammed home one more for good measure into

stoppage time.

Still, it could have been worse as Havelock North Wanderers were put to the sword by an uncompromising Wellington Olympic 10-0. Enough said. On Sunday, the mid-season corset stiffening undertaken by Napier City Rovers looks to have paid immediate dividends with a 1 all draw at Park Island against Miramar Rangers.

With four teams to progress through to the national summer league competition at the end of Round 18, the top sides as they currently stand look about right. Wellington Olympic are now out in front on 21 points followed by Miramar and the Nix on 18 and Napier on 15

points. At the other end of the scale, Wellington United and TFS North Wellington are on 6 points while Havelock North, Wests and Petone sit on 8.

There will be a lot to contemplate for all sides as the league takes a break this weekend and another knock out round in the Chatham Cup will roll out across the country.

In the Women’s W League, Palmerston North Marist are top of the pops with a game in hand, despite losing 4-0 on the road to Waterside Karori who are in second spot. Wellington United had no trouble in their 6-1 win over Victoria University while Seatoun pipped Mana Coach Services North Wellington 3-2.
