With five decades of at times hair raising rides, the Ohariu Valley Riding Club is set to celebrate next month with an afternoon event at the club’s arena in Ohariu Valley.

A highlight of the event will be a demonstration by top local dressage rider, Chelsea Callaghan, giving a dressage masterclass with international dressage judge Helen Hughes-Keen instructing and commentating.

Founding member Roy Kellehan remembers the early days well.

He says the club was formed out of a need for older riders from the local pony club to move to a more advanced level.

“There was a chap Jim Leslie who moved to the valley and he had a family of five, three boys a daughter and his wife and he wanted a horse for each member.”

“I said to him I had been thinking of getting a club going and he said why don’t we do that and I had a bit of land and a wool shed, which was ideal for the clubrooms.”

Jim Leslie was the managing director for Mobil Oil New Zealand and it wasn’t long before he had the American ambassador as patron for the club and out of that relationship came a silver cup.

Current club president Julie Sammut says the idea was to have an afternoon tea and for past and current members to share their memories.

“We have local girl Chelsea Callaghan, who is almost a Grand Prix rider and she is going to give a demonstration of dressage at the top level to music.

Although she adds the games they play now are nothing like they used to be fifty-years-ago.

Childhood horse drives epilepsy book

Karori’s Krystle Crimmins has called on a fond childhood memory to create a book around epilepsy awareness.

Krystle, who was born with the condition, has written Snowy’s Talent based on her first horse as a child.

“I did my first book called Epilepsy First Aid which covered what to do in an emergency.

“With November being Epilepsy Awareness Month, I saw a gap in the market and wanted to do something in the children’s space and so Snowy’s Talent was born.

“It’s my journey through Riding For The Disabled Hutt Valley/ Silverstream.

“Snowy was my first horse and the first horse I rode when I was five years old.

“Snowy gave me a lot of confidence,” she says.

“He went at my speed and he knew if something was wrong and he made me feel safe.

“If I wasn’t having a good day, he would know instantly.

“He was a positive reinforcement when I was feeling anxious.

“I wanted to make it known that having epilepsy was ok and in these times everyone is feeling anxious so if you have a person or a pet that can give you comfort then you will be ok.”

Krystle deals with awareness seizures.

A seizure that starts in one area of the brain and the person remains alert and able to interact is called a focal onset aware seizure.

She has operated her company Epilepsy First Aid full time since 2018.

She speaks at workplaces, schools and charitable organisations and she leads workshops on epilepsy awareness.

Epilepsy affected around 48,000 New Zealanders and the condition can happen to anyone at any time.

“It’s been good to talk from a life experience rather than from a nurse or doctor’s perspective.

“I’ve enjoyed the challenge of getting the message out there and I feel people relate to my story.”

inbrief news Christmas parade cancelled The annual Johnsonville Charitable Trust Lions Christmas Parade has been cancelled this year. The parade was meant to be on December 4 but has been cancelled due to uncertainties in implementing COVID-19 restrictions, and with the health and safety of local families forefront in mind.

Santa and the parade will hopefully be back in 2022.

Concert success Johnsonville’s Malvina Major Retirement Village had a successful concert in an effort to raise money to beautify a roadside garden which the residents look at each day.

The concert, supported by the Linden Loader Choir, raised $640 towards the project.

Newlands water restored

Wellington Water crews responded to a burst water main in Newlands overnight on Tuesday which was first reported at 10:30pm on Monday Due to the large amount of water drained from the reservoir, the auto-shutoff valve was activated which shut off water to much of Newlands.

The water service was restored for all but 16 properties. Water was returned to these properties by 6.30am Tuesday morning.

Labour Bill to extend protections for children introduced Labour MP for ƿKƗUiu Greg O’Connor’s bill to require registered child sex offenders to provide additional information to Police before travelling overseas was introduced to Parliament today.

Mr O’Connor’s Child Protection (Child Sex Offender Government Agency Registration) (Overseas Travel Reporting) Amendment Bill was drawn from the members’ bill ballot at noon today.

“This Bill will provide the same protections for potential victims of New Zealand child sexual offenders when the offender travels overseas as when they travel in New Zealand,” Mr O’Connor said.

“Under the Child Protection (Child Sex Offender Government Agency Registration) Act 2016, when travelling in New Zealand, registerable child sex offenders must provide details of the addresses they will be staying

at and dates of their travel.

“Currently, however, if a child sex offender wishes to leave the country there is no requirement to detail where he or she will be residing while overseas.

“This Bill aligns international travel reporting requirements with domestic travel and ensures that where the requirements are not met, the same penalties apply.

This change will allow Police and Customs networks to better protect children in the countries

the offenders travel to, and will help support the identification of sex tourism.

The Bill also requires registrable offenders to detail the passport number, place of issue, and date of expiry of each valid passport they hold.

“The existence of another passport could be used to disguise travel to a third country where opportunities for child sexual abuse may exist, so it is important information to collect to

help protect children,” said Mr O’Connor.

“While this is a relatively simple amendment to the Child Protection (Child Sex Offender Government Agency Registration) Bill of 2016, it is one with which we New Zealanders can do our bit to help achieve some measure of protection for potential victims of child sex offenders in other countries.

“I look forward to the Bill’s first reading in the coming weeks.”

Heritage Week is just a matter of time Wellington Heritage Week is back for its fifth year this week with over 60 events, tours, exhibitions and activities showcasing the wideranging history of the region.

Wellington City Council is a proud sponsor of the event, and a number of Council’s facilities and services will be featured over the week – including a tour of Council’s Archives, tours at Bolton Street and Karori Cemeteries, an exhibition in the Courtenay Place Lightboxes, and a visit to the restored Futuna Chapel.

Mayor Andy Foster says Heritage Week is a celebration of our capital city stories recounting events, profiling the people who took part in them and their legacy that we still enjoy today.

“The history of Pǀneke Wellington is made up of many multicultural influences, political input, commercial successes, and

significant direct investment in important heritage icons that have made Wellington into an engaged, active, vibrant and diverse capital.

“Council is proud to have contributed to the city’s heritage with policy, projects and grants including the Built Heritage Incentive Fund, assisting owners of heritage buildings to undertake conservation and seismic strengthening work.

“One of the many success stories from that fund is the Futuna Chapel restoration work on the Stations of the Cross which is open to visitors during Heritage Week – just one of the many must go to events that I will be attending myself.

“I am also pleased to announce that Heritage Week marks the launch of the digitisation of Redmer Yska’s Wellington: Biography of a City,” adds the Mayor.

The book, first published in

2006, spans 170 years of the city’s history from early settlement, through political, commercial, cultural and infrastructure development, the 1918 flu epidemic, wars, depressions, the visiting Beatles, and many of the early Mayors and Councillors.

After permission was kindly given by the author, publisher and the Ministry of Culture and Heritage, every page was hand scanned

by Wellington City Libraries’ Local Historian Gábor Toth, and is going live on Recollect to coincide with the festival.

“Knowing, understanding and preserving our history and heritage is an important part of our identity – locally, nationally, and globally,” says Gábor.

“This book is of high heritage value as a detailed, interesting and well-researched record of the complex and compelling history of

Wellington’s Heritage Week will shine a light on some of the capital’s most historic places.

PǀQeke Wellington – and digitising it for the library’s database means it will now be available to everyone.”

Since its inception five years ago, Wellington Heritage Week has grown from 20 events to over 60, and is so popular most events get booked up early on – which Festival Director David Batchelor says shows the potential of the local

heritage and culture sector.

“The independent festival has become a staple cultural event in the region’s calendar, and a platform to celebrate our local communities.

With the Council’s support, we aim to grow the festival’s national tourism profile to support businesses in line with the successful Napier Art Deco Festival,” says David.

Ngaio and Crofton Downs residents step-up to the plate

It is well-known the people of Ngaio and Crofton Downs have big hearts and are willing to help those who are struggling according to Sue Brown, Minister at Ngaio Union Church.

“But nothing prepared us for the huge response to our call-out last month to help restock DCM’s shelves after the Covid lock-down had nearly cleaned them out,” she says.

“We welcomed a steady stream of happy people carrying bags and boxes overflowing with groceries and toiletries, to help with DCM’s mahi of ending homelessness in Wellington.”

The response to the appeal was so

generous that Ngaio Union had to ask DCM to send along a van to carry the haul to where it’s needed, down at DCM’s headquarters in the city.

“So many people asked us if we could do this again,” says Sue. “We’ve decided to receive donations of food and toiletries on the first Saturday of each month, alongside the Recycling Collection Station we host together with the Ngaio Crofton Downs Residents Association.

“So, on the first Saturday of each month (beginning Saturday 6th November - 10-12) you can drop off groceries and donations for DCM at Ngaio Union Church.

Karori Arts and Crafts centre manager Margaret Taylor has nothing but fond memories from her eight years in the role.

Margaret is moving to Christchurch to be closer to family but has been instrumental in organising the Karori Arts and Crafts annual exhibition which starts tomorrow and runs all weekend.

“It hasn’t been a job to me,” Margaret says.

“It’s been more of a passion over the years.

The annual art exhibition sees plenty of locally created artwork as well as some from places like Wairarapa.

Margaret says there will be something for everyone.

“We’ve adapted this year and we have many pieces that are unframed which makes them more affordable for people to purchase,” she says.

“It may create more of a casual feel in parts but we have a lot more people entering because they don’t have the barrier of paying for framing so it’s one of our most inclusive exhibitions.”

Many of the artists have been through one of the several art classes like drawing,

painting and acrylic amongst others which run at the Karori Arts Centre.

“There’s a lot of quality this year and it will be affordable.”

Gordon Harris Art Supplies is putting up a prize for best print or drawing, best traditional work and best contemporary art work.

Margaret says finishing up in her role is something different.

“It feels odd,” she says. “I’m really going to miss it.

“I’ve appreciated the support, connections and inspirations towards the creativity that has enriched my life.”

Margaret says helping to introduce new classes and school holiday programmes was always satisfying and kept the role fresh.

“I always would ask ‘what if we tried this’ and we did beginner sewing and knitting as well as night art classes all helped us connect with younger groups of people which is important because they are the future.”

She also wanted to thank Marylyn Lupton and others for stepping up as she eased back on her role ahead of her move south.

The exhibition runs from 11am to 5pm tomorrow, Saturday and Sunday with EFTPOS available.

Glenise takes one for the team Former Independent Herald journalist Glenise Dreaver, now with the sister paper The Sun in Blenheim, took one for the team on Tuesday morning.

By about 9.10am, when she lined up for her Covid test, there were over 20 cars at Horton Park on what was the fourth day of testing after a positive Covid case was identified in Blenheim last Friday October 22. The person had arrived by plane on Thursday from Rotorua. This was the South Island’s first reported case since last year.

The individual had requested a test on arrival and that was reported as a positive a day later. That person and three other close contacts are now isolating in Blenheim.

“I’d been to the New World supermarket, one of eight places of interest in Blenheim, a few hours before the positive person was there,” says Glenise.

“But I’d also been all over Blenheim on both days, having chosen to do my Christmas shopping early because likely shortages have been identified.

“I also had an almost imperceptible sore throat for a few hours so decided to be ultra careful as I meet so many people in my job.

“Luckily I’m double vaxxed, which gives huge peace of mind, but it doesn’t necessarily stop you from handing it on if you’ve been exposed.”

Police dismantled drug and money laundering operation Police have this week dismantled a sophisticated drug dealing and money laundering operation, making seven arrests and restraining assets worth $3.5 million in the process.

Police have executed 18 search warrants in relation to Operation Chestnut — a 10-monthlong investigation led by Manawatu Organised Crime Unit into the sale and supply of methamphetamine and associated offending in Tasman, Wellington, Central and Eastern Police districts.

The search warrants began in Wellington last week with the arrest of the alleged main offender, a 44-year-old man from Horowhenua with links to members of the Filthy Few, Hells Angels, Head Hunters, Black Power and Mongrel Mob. He has been charged with 12 offences including possession of methamphetamine for supply, conspiring to deal methamphetamine, unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of a restricted weapon and money laundering. He is scheduled to reappear in Wellington District Court on Thursday 4 November.

Yesterday further search warrants were executed at properties in Horowhenua, Himatangi, Horopito, Marlborough Sounds and Wellington. In Horowhenua a significant cannabis grow was located with 60 mature plants and 4kg of packaged cannabis. The ready-to-sell cannabis is estimated to be worth

about $40,000.

Three Tasman men — aged 44, 50, 53 — have been charged with drug-related offending, alongside a 36-year-old man, 54-year-old man and a 53-year-old woman from Horowhenua.

Assets totalling around $3.5 million have been restrained under the Criminal Proceeds (Recovery) Act. These include six properties, a catamaran, a yacht, a leisure boat, a jet ski, a motorbike and classic cars.

Nineteen firearms, methamphetamine and about $500,000 cash has also been seized.

Detective Inspector Paul Baskett says the long-running operation reflects Police’s commitment to disrupting and dismantling drug networks. “This was a complex network involving a number of people in a range of situations and locations throughout the central and lower North Island and upper South Island.

“This type of offending undermines the wellbeing of our communities creating significant social harm. Police will continue to target those who illegally accumulate assets and wealth through the sale of illicit drugs.

“We want to help build resilient communities that thrive in the absence of illicit drugs and drug-related offending.”

Police encourage anyone with information about suspected drug dealing in their community to contact 105, or Crime Stoppers anonymously via 0800 555 111.

The association’s president, Ian Turk, when asked about the event said.

“Having a local photo competition was a new idea last year and we were surprised at how popular it was. So we decided to run it again. It might even become an annual event.”

Building interest in heritage - DOC The Department of Conservation (DOC) is pleased to announce the winning builds from our Wellington Heritage Week competition.

Wellington Heritage Week is a yearly festival that celebrates all things heritage in the Wellington region. In the last week of October old houses open for tours, walking groups plod the streets, and people head out into the bush to learn more about the natural history of the area.

This year, DOC challenged kids, teens, and adults from around the motu to build their favourite heritage place in Wellington out of Lego (or other building blocks). Entrants had to consider the history of the Wellington region and what resonated most with them, as well as the story of that place and how to recreate it memorably.

The festival is an opportunity to celebrate the cultural heritage sites that DOC manages and encourage people to engage with the past.

Conway Matthews decided to give bus driving a go after his neighbour, a bus driver with Tranzurban, thought his outward personality and ability to communicate positively with people from all different backgrounds would be perfect for the role. So at the end of 2020, Conway began the paperwork to gain his Class 2 license and under the watchful eye of one of Tranzurban’s driver trainers, overcame initial nerves to settle into the driver’s seat.

“Once you understand the mechanics of a bus and you get a feel for its size with things like spatial awareness and the tail swing, it comes together really well,” he says. “My training was extremely good, I was impressed. Gaining my Class 2 ended up being a comfortable process.” Now, after six months on the job, Conway says driving has become second nature.

“Even though I’ve only been driving a short time, my passengers all have a story to tell, and I like hearing their stories. There are wonderful characters out there. A wonderful mix of chaos and calm. My wife has said when I get on my bus, I have the biggest grin on my face.”

“There’s a misconception that bus driving is not that glamorous but there is a certain satisfaction when a passenger disembarks your bus and says ‘thank you’ for taking care of us. It is well worth it.”

New Chancellor for Victoria University Wellingtonian John Allen has been elected Chancellor of Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington for 2022, succeeding Neil PaviourSmith whose time on Council ends in early 2022.

Mr Allen was unanimously elected to lead the University’s governing body at a meeting of the Council. He is currently the Chief Executive of WellingtonNZ and is a former Chief Executive of the New Zealand Racing Board, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the New Zealand Post Group and a partner in the law firm Rudd Watts & Stone.

The new Chancellor is currently Chair of the University’s Audit and Risk Committee and has been a member of the Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington Council since January 2018.

Mr Allen is an alumnus of the University and has previously been a visiting lecturer in the Faculty of Law. He received a Distinguished Alumni Award in 2006.

Mr Allen is an experienced company director having been on boards including: Te Papa Tongarewa, Datacom, Kiwibank, the New Zealand Stroke Foundation, the Nikau Foundation, and the New Zealand International Festival of the Arts.

Council member Dr Dianne McCarthy CRSNZ CNZM was unanimously re-elected to the position of Pro-Chancellor at the same meeting. The Pro-Chancellor is the Deputy Chair of the Council.

Dr McCarthy (BA; BSc.; MSc (Hons); PhD (AKL)) was first elected Pro-Chancellor in 2021.

She has extensive experience in a number of senior management and governance roles in the tertiary education, science and health sectors. A former CEO of Royal Society Te ASƗrangi, Dr McCarthy is Deputy Chair of the Board of the New Zealand Institute of Economic Research, a trustee of the Malaghan Institute of Medical Research, and a member of a range of other governance boards.

Dr McCarthy was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for her services to Education in 2008, a Companion of the Royal Society of New Zealand for her services to science in 2015, and a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for her services to science, business and women in 2016.

Mr Allen says it is a privilege to assume leadership of Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington’s Council.

“This is one of New Zealand’s greatest centres of research, learning, and innovation. The impact of the University is seen not just in the contribution that its graduates make in their chosen disciplines but in the research, writing and advocacy of its academics, who are helping to grapple with issues from COVID-19 to climate change and the legacy of colonisation. It is a fantastic place with an exciting future.”

Mr Allen paid tribute to retiring Chancellor Neil Paviour-Smith.

Christmas festivities reined in for COVID This year’s A Very Welly Christmas festival is taking a year off due to COVID uncertainty, but in its place there’ll be lots of events and activities celebrating the festive season – and supporting local businesses.

In what would’ve been the events 6th year, organisers have regrettably made the difficult decision to put this year’s event on ice as unpredictable COVID restrictions impact the planning of major festivals.

Organisers and stakeholders are now working through logistics and opportunities to ensure a different kind of Christmas cheer will ring around the capital come December.

Mayor Andy Foster says: “I am

very proud of the Council team who are busy reimagining this year’s Christmas festivities with a priority on the city’s safety and well-being given COVID is still very much a threat to our lives.

“I have every confidence that early in the new year given the determined success of Super Shot Saturday, coupled with high rates of vaccinations, we will see the return of our favourite events.

“Right now, our focus is on loving local and if you haven’t already, Take Two for the Team as Wellington spends Christmas in our stellar shops, cafes, restaurants, and bars, and supporting the city’s arts sector,” adds the Mayor.

Plans for December festivities

are yet to be confirmed, but will resemble 2020’s Love Local campaign with pop-up shops, banners, dressed up storefronts, and incentives to encourage Christmas shopping and activities in the city.

City Events Manager Suzanne Tamaki says events and venues have taken a bit of a battering this year with cancellations, postponements and capacity restrictions, but adapting and adjusting to the conditions is part of the job.

“In Wellington we’re used to having to think fast on our feet and come up with creative solutions for every eventuality, but the global pandemic has provided its own set of challenges.

Students encounter safety lessons of the paranormal kind Primary school students are learning to safely glide along Wellington’s spooky streets with practical lessons thanks to Wellington’s premier paranormal police officers and Greater Wellington’s Scooter Ready programme.

Supported by Micro Scooters, New Zealand Police and Waka Kotahi, the practical lessons teach students to safely share the footpath and avoid making any boo-boos on their scooters. The programme also introduces further benefits including supporting student’s health and wellbeing.

“We didn’t think we stood a ghost of a chance of getting them but working with Wellington Paranormal has been a perfect opportunity to capture the attention and deliver important safety lessons to primary school students. The great thing about the videos is they also appeal to adults and caregivers, the people that kids learn habits from,” says Greater Wellington Cycle Skills and Scooter Ready programme lead, Matt Shipman.

The four videos focus on scooter set up, stopping, sharing and safety on the footpath and feed into a wider road safety programme that encourages active and sustainable travel.

While the videos might feature spooky characters they don’t scare students off important safety lessons.

Matt says, “In the past, there has been a lot of stern messaging out there to scare kids into safe active travel. We’ve found it’s more effective to teach kids the positives of scooting and walking safely – and really emphasise, through a bit of laughter, all the good things that come out of taking care on the road and foot paths.”

Wellington Paranormal producer, Paul Yates says “We were delighted that our spirited officers, Karen and Maaka agreed to do these videos to help keep

our tamariki and others safe on our footpaths when on a scooter or bike.

“In the role of Officer O’Leary, Karen comes across as a real police officer whilst being funny in a way that kids can both giggle at and learn from.

“Maaka has the same appeal as his ‘Sarge’ character, so we hope that these two loveable characters help get an important message across in a way that’s both entertaining and educational to children and parents alike.”

Despite this, students taking to the streets on scooters might still make some parents white as a sheet. Parents can rest easy however as the sessions are part of a wider programme soon to be etched in stone.

Previously, these sessions were only offered on a more ad hoc basis around the region. Now with the introduction of a more developed programme, it shows the growing importance of these initiatives while bringing together active travel and supporting our tamariki’s health and wellbeing on the road.

Scooter Ready supports Greater Wellington’s goals to reduce transportgenerated carbon emissions by 35 percent and achieve a 40 percent increase in active and public transport ‘mode share’ by 2030.

Wellington joins global race for climate action Wellington has been welcomed into the global Cities Race to Zero initiative, joining cities around the world in a collective pledge to halve carbon emissions by 2030 – and become a net zero carbon capital by 2050.

The Cities Race to Zero is part of Race to Zero, a global campaign to rally leadership and support for a healthy, resilient, zero carbon recovery that prevents future threats, creates decent jobs and unlocks inclusive, sustainable growth.

Wellington Mayor Andy Foster says now more than ever we need to take urgent and ambitious action on the climate crisis.

“By joining the Cities Race to Zero, Wellington has committed to keeping global warming below the 1.5°Celsius goal of the Paris Agreement. We’re putting inclusive climate action at the centre of all urban decision-making to create thriving and equitable communities for everyone.”

The announcement comes just two weeks out from COP26, the major climate change summit hosted by the UK in Glasgow.

British High Commissioner to New Zealand, Laura Clarke, welcomed Wellington City Council’s commitment.

“I’m delighted Wellington City Council has joined the Race to Zero, joining 800 other cities from across the globe in pledging ambitious ac-

tion to tackle the climate crisis. We urge other cities, universities and businesses to join too. If we all play our part we can protect people and nature and keep the 1.5 degrees goal alive.”

Wellington City Council recently set a new science-based emission reduction target of 57 percent by 2030, and released the first annual update of Te Atakura – First to Zero. The 2021 Update provides a progress report on the actions the Council committed to when it declared a climate emergency in 2019.

Wellington City Council is already a member of other international climate action initiatives including the 100 Resilient Cities Network and the Global Covenant of Mayors, and is one of this year’s top 50 cities in the Bloomberg Global Mayors Challenge. Having already achieved Champion City status in the Mayors Challenge, Wellington is now in to win $US1million to further develop a ‘digital twin’ for the city using gaming technology and real data so Wellingtonians can explore climate change challenges such as sea level rise.

Earlier this year Wellington was named the number one city worldwide for environmental security in the Economist’s Safe Cities Index 2021. This index considers how the city has incorporated sustainability parameters into its urban planning to reduce carbon emissions and manage climate risks.

Wellington has joined the global Cities Race to Zero initiative, joining cities around the world in a collective pledge to halve carbon emissions by 2030.

GARDENING THIS WEEK Your food chain: By Wally Richards I remember as a child 70 years ago the vegetables and fruit that we grew because our parents and grandparents had known hard times, two World Wars and broken supply chains.

We have not had any Wars but our supply chains are shattered due to virus related problems.

Rationing was seen in Supermarkets during lock downs and as a people we have become too dependent on being able to pop into a supermarket every day for that days food or top ups.

I am sure as a kid that we had

and cereals to last the family for 3 months or more likely 6 months.

Your garden can supply you with a continual source of vegetables if you make it happen.

Simple fast things to grow such as silverbeet, lettuce, radishes, mescaline and sprouts can mean a

PROTECTING YOUR CHILD’S HEALTH We know when our children are sick, they go from being active and alert to quiet, grumpy, sleepy, clingy and wanting more cuddles. Often they lose interest in food.

The most common general signs of illness are fever, pain, vomiting, diarrhoea, cough, headache and rash. Fever (body temperature above 37°C) indicates that the body is ‘fighting’ infection from either bacteria or viruses.

Children’s natural defence mechanisms are less well-developed than adults’ immune systems, so children are at higher risk of infections.

Fever accompanied by cough, runny or blocked nose and headache can signify the common cold. “Ask us about our Children’s Pain & Fever fact card”, recommend Self Care pharmacists, “because this has a lot of helpful hints for looking after sick children.

Also it indicates what other signs to look out for in children that indicate more serious illnesses.”

Keeping your child comfortable in bed, giving plenty of fluids, and using liquid medicines such as paracetamol or ibuprofen to reduce fever, are best when your child has a cold.

“But” advice from Self Care pharmacists is “use proper medicine-measuring spoons when measuring-out doses of liquid medicines. Don’t use kitchen teaspoons because they are not accurate, the volume varies from spoon to spoon, and your child will not receive the correct dose of medicine.”

It is important to look out for sore throats in children as it can lead to Rheumatic Fever.

This is a serious illness that affects mainly Maori and Pacific children and young people, aged four and above.

Sore throats generally clear up by themselves but “strep” sore throats can lead to rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease which can be life threatening. It is important to check up children with sore throats so if they do have a “strep” sore throat they can be treated with antibiotics and stop the illness progressing any further.

If you are unsure then get in touch with your pharmacist, doctor or nurse.

Parents can encourage their children to take simple steps to help prevent the spread of some illnesses.

Children should cover their mouths and noses when they sneeze and cough, and then wash their hands straight after. Washing hands is also VERY important after going to the toilet, and before eating. They should not share cups and drink bottles, nor spoons and other eating utensils. Tissues are best

Immunisation is generally one of the most effective ways of protecting children against infections that can cause serious diseases and associated complications (including death).

All forms of immunisation work by causing the body to produce an immune response, in the same way it would if exposed to the disease but without the child suffering all the symptoms and consequences. In the future, when the child comes into contact with the disease, the immune system responds quickly and helps prevent the child developing the disease.

The World Health organisation and the Ministry of Health recommend immunisation for your children. However there may be cases where it is not suitable to immunise and it is important to see your pharmacist or doctor regarding possible risks and/or contraindications.

Children with asthma or allergies, or who are recovering from an illness, such as a common cold, can be immunised.

Free immunisation, at specific times in a child’s life according to the Ministry of Health’s immunisation schedule, is available to all children in New Zealand, to protect against a number of diseases – diphtheria, haemophilus influenzae type b (a cause of childhood meningitis), pneumococcal disease, hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, polio, tetanus and whooping cough.

Side effects from vaccines can sometimes occur and include redness and soreness at the injection site. There may also be mild fever.

While these symptoms may be upsetting at the time, the benefit is protection from the disease. More serious reactions to immunisation are very rare.

Pink Ribbon fundraisers different in Wellington this year Breast Cancer Foundation NZ is asking people in the Wellington region to generously support local pink ribbon fundraisers happening this weekend.

Volunteer collectors will be stationed around the region for the Pink Ribbon Street Appeal on tomorrow and Saturday.

Then on Sunday, Breast Cancer Awareness Month culminates with New Zealand’s first ever neighbourhood Pink Ribbon Walk.

Extended Covid-19 restrictions around the country have forced the cancellation of two major fundraisers this year – the iconic Pink Ribbon Walks in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch and the Pink Ribbon Street Appeal in Auckland. The charity expects to lose more than $500,000 in income as a result, and it’s now appealing to people in the Wellington region to help make its remaining events a success.

Ah-Leen Rayner, chief executive of Breast Cancer Foundation NZ, said: “As a charitable trust that receives no government

funding, we rely entirely on the goodwill of New Zealanders to keep our life-saving work going.

But the ongoing Covid restrictions are severely impacting our ability to fundraise. Every dollar we’ve lost to Covid is money we can’t spend on supporting patients in their time of need, cutting-edge research, and education programmes to stop deaths from breast cancer.

“We know this is devastating for our supporters, who volunteer or walk to honour the women they’ve lost, or to mark their own journey with breast cancer.

However, we’re still committed to making the rest of our events a huge success and we hope the greater Wellington community will get behind our efforts to fight against breast cancer.”

Breast cancer is the leading cause of death for New Zealand women under 65 and every year around 360 women are diagnosed with it in greater Wellington area.

The neighbourhood Pink Ribbon Walks encourage people to fundraise by getting dressed

up in pink and walk in their own communities. Participants will get the chance to warm up virtually with Celebrity Treasure Island star Joe Naufahu, and win prizes via social media throughout the day from event sponsors Estee Lauder Companies, The Hits, SBS Bank and Pink Lady Apples. Time to scrub up on toxic algae urges Greater Wellington Summer swimmers, dog owners and the community should be scrubbing up on spotting toxic algae as we approach the warmer months and our refreshing rivers beckon.

Toxic algae is harmful to

people and deadly to dogs, so owners need to take the lead and check either the LAWA website or Greater Wellington’s safe to swim webpage before getting in the water.

of toxic algae mats. Scarier still, an amount as small as a 50 cent piece, is enough to kill a dog” says Dr Evan Harrison, Team Leader of Marine and Freshwater.

Vigilance is key as dogs are likely to sniff out the leathery dark green or black toxic algal mats which can wash up at river edges.

Prevention however, is better than any treatment so checking for warnings online before swimming and letting your dog in the water is paramount says Dr Harrison.

Greater Wellington also urges caution to members of the public.

The risk for dogs is higher but we

also need to take care ourselves and our tamariki. The danger is still there for us”.

Awareness for summer swimmers and people with dogs about toxic algae is supported by Land Air Water Aotearoa (LAWA), who provide a platform for swimming water quality data and warnings across New Zealand.

“Water quality sampling is routinely conducted at over 80 freshwater and coastal sites region wide.

It’s this data which is shared” says Sheryl Miller, Senior Advisor, Environment.

Rather than rely solely on phys-

ical monitoring results, Greater Wellington uses a ‘risk model’ to identify safe swimming levels.

This takes into account changes in water quality due to rainfall and the ‘long term condition of the site”.

Communities can be sure that they are seeing up-to-date information about the suitability for swimming at popular swimming sites” says Sheryl Miller.

Members of the public who think they or their dogs have swallowed toxic algae should seek urgent medical attention by dialling 111 and for their dogs, take it immediately to the nearest vet.

With summer approaching people are being warned to be aware of algae in waterways when it comes to swimming and their dogs.

Frogs don’t need to drink water as they absorb it through their skin.

Cane’s body of work the physical question The news Sam Whitelock will captain the All Blacks over Sam Cane is a vote of no-confidence in the flanker.

Now, I must preface this column by saying, Cane’s leadership style has rubbed me the wrong way since he was given the role after the 2019 Rugby World Cup. He comes across as a whinger when interacting with referees during games and he’s made comments questioning the intelligence of the New Zealand rugby public which were poorly thought out at best and

idiotic at worst.

Cane, 29, has been out of action since the end of March, after rupturing his pectoral muscle playing for the Chiefs in Super Rugby Aotearoa.

With Cane now returning to the field, coach Ian Foster suggested he would be eased back into the environment and assistant coach John Plumtree has confirmed Whitelock will lead the side.

Cane, as a player, is terrific, he tackles like a machine and his work rate certainly cannot be questioned, it is

his leadership that has him bemoaned by a lot of people on the outside.

Many people, particularly in the South Island, wanted Whitelock as the captain through to the 2023 World Cup, but since Cane has been pegged as a captain-in-waiting since 2012, there was an element of inevitability about his succession after Kieran Read’s retirement.

If Cane was the undoubted leader of the All Blacks, then there would be no reason to take the captaincy off him, regardless of the length of

the injury lay-off.

There’s no way Read, Richie McCaw or Tana Umaga would have played in a team they didn’t captain during their leadership tenure.

It seems to be a major vote of no confidence in either Sam himself or his body’s ability to withstand the physicality needed to get to the next World Cup. If I was to guess, I’d say it was the latter.

Cane has had neck injuries and a history of concussions and with the

tournament still two years away, there is no guarantee Cane will make it.

The All Blacks’ regimes of the past decade have not been ones to backtrack on too many selections.

They’ve been built on a base of stubbornness and with good reason because the success has been phenomenal.

However, this seems to be an admission of sorts that Cane has something to prove on this Northern Hemisphere tour, perhaps more physically than mentally.

They followed it up with a comfortable five-wicket win over Wellington Collegians before trouncing Taita District in a dominant display on the Sunday.

Max Petrie topped off a solid opening weekend with the ball, taking 4-12 from his four overs as Johnsonville bowled Taita out for just 70.

Former Firebird and Auckland Aces allrounder Matt McEwan, the coach who got a late call up due to Devan Vishvaka’s bad back and Scott Mudgway made easy work of the total, chasing it down in 10 overs to secure their side a 10-wicket win.

Raki says the team was happy with three wins but he would like to see the batting be a bit more consistent.

“I think we made hard work of chasing 115 in the first game but I thought our bowling and fielding was really great all weekend,” he says.

“We didn’t drop a catch.

“Twenty20 cricket is a hard one to gauge when it comes to momentum.

“If we can keep improving with the bat then we’ll go close this weekend.

Johnsonville will take on Upper Hutt United in round four and North City Cricket Club in round five with both games being held on Saturday before the semifinals and finals on Sunday.

However, it was Back-to-back centuries from Tim Robinson which blasted Onslow to the top of Pool 1 on the opening weekend and effectively stole the spotlight.

The young allrounder totaled 25 sixes over his opening two matches as Onslow breezed to a 135-run win over Hutt District before following it up with a much tighter 16-run win over Karori.

Onslow backed up their dream Saturday start with a third win on the bounce, this time without the services of Robinson, as Alex Thompson (51), Sam Cooper (50) and Micah Conroy (59*) all chimed in against Naenae Old Boys to secure a 73-run win.

North Wellington win major football tournament

North Wellington came from two goals down to defeat Wellington Olympic 3-2 to claim the Napier under-19 football final on Monday.

It completed what had been a dominant campaign up until the adversity of the final.

North Wellington had scored 23 goals and conceded zero in compiling five wins and a draw on their way to the final.

They beat Wainuiomata 4-0, Lower Hutt 2-0, Whanganui City 6-0 before a 0-0 draw against Upper Hutt before a 3-0 win against Taradale and then comprehensively beating Upper Hutt 4-0 to make the decider.

North Wellington coach Andre Cantin-Buckley says the team showed great character to go unbeaten in eight games over the three days.

“Ultimately we knew we had the talent to go a long way in the tournament but it was our work ethic which set us apart

from other teams.”

That effort was typified by the attacking Spark and leadership of Alex Mort who played through the knockout phase of the competition while injured and was named player of the tournament.

Andre says even when the team trailed 2-0 in the 70 minute final, his faith in the team remained.

“I looked at the game and believed we didn’t deserve to be down 2-0 and that there was plenty of time remaining which turned out to be the case.

Andre also praised the support staff off the pitch for their efforts in ensuring the team could play to a high level despite a heavy workload.

“You never expect to win tournament football because it’s so tough, so to achieve it is something special and we certainly had great support all weekend.”

He says the club is committed to ensuring the team can become the backbone of the club going forward and to improve future senior teams.

North Wellington’s under-19 mens team won the Napier Under-19 Tournament following a come-from-behind 3-2 win over Wellington Olympic over the long weekend.
