Trophy time Johnsonville School got the ultimate taste of some rugby silverware.

The Bledisloe Cup, which has been in New Zealand hands since 2002 along with the women’s and men’s World Cup trophies made a visit to the school thanks to parent, Ben Fisher.

Each class took turns with the trophies in their classrooms with a question and answer session as well as photo opportunities, a must for the pupils.

Karori apprentice wins regional competition

Karori builder Karl Douglas won the Master Builders Apprentice of the Year in partnership with Carters Lower North Island competition.

The 27-year-old says his experience as a draftsman helped his cause but he is much happier outside, with tools in hand than in an office with a pencil.

“This is my third year building, when I was a draftsman, I drew a lot of houses and now I have a taste of what not to do with a house because once I draw it, I then have to build it so I get the perspective of both sides,” he says.

“I was drafting in Wanaka and every day was such a nice day that I was itching to be outside,” he says.

“I didn’t want to be sitting down at an office desk.

“I think later on I’d like to combine the two.”

The Registered Master Builders Apprentice of the Year, is the leading apprentice competition for the building and construction sector.

It recognises excellence among carpentry apprentices and raises awareness of career opportunities in the building and construction industry.

At the Lower North Island regional competition the apprentices were judged on a two-hour practical challenge, and their initial entry submission.

The top 10 in the region progressed to an interview with the judging panel, which was followed by an onsite visit where contestants discussed their project.

The judging panel praised Karl’s maturity.

“Karl displayed a strong understanding of the project and what was required. This was illustrated by his clear attention to detail throughout the practical challenge,” the judges say.

“Karl interviewed well, coming across as someone who could effectively run a house build.

He demonstrated a wide skill set, explaining how he uses his draughting diploma to understand plans across a variety of jobs.

“He is someone who can comfortably work with technology, effectively using devices such as an iPad for both drawings and specs.”

Karl will now go on to compete against the 10 regional winners from across the country at the New Zealand Apprentice of the Year competition in Auckland in November.

Despite managing 102 days being Covid free, sadly and mysteriously we now have a cluster to which all the resources of the Covid response team are being directed, in order to keep it contained within the cluster, and eliminated.

For the rest of us, it means a move back to level 2, which while not as onerous and restrictive as it is to our Auckland friends, still requires considerable effort and sacrifice on the part of Ōhāriu constituents. Our churches, sportsgrounds and clubs, schools, businesses and all places where people gather have had to either cancel or reduce their activities.

We will have to increase our mask wearing, contact tracing, and hygiene, while at the same time reducing our personal contact, visits to vulnerable friends and relatives, and unnecessary travel.

Zealand can remain at the forefront of successfully minimising the impacts on our population and the economy.

Sweden is one country which never locked down and has thousands of deaths and the damage to their economy is far greater than our own.

And then of course there is the US and Victoria.

What I can absolutely assure Ōhāriu residents is that the government is continually developing and improving border protection, and the science which allows the identification and origin of each strain is the key to reducing the need for mass lockdowns in future, and of course to create a vaccine.

What is not helpful is exaggerated or downright untrue commentary which just reduces confidence, and importantly, compliance. Be sceptical of any information other than that from official sources.

Fundraising for fun and new wheels

Kimi Ora School, a learning centre for disabled young people is set to get a boost from the fundraising efforts of Karori resident Pip Tait.

The school needs two specially-designed bikes for their students to ride for outdoor activities and Pip has raised $9000 of her $12000 goal over the past eight months, to make it happen and the last fundraising hurdle is a garage sale on September 19.

Pip’s daughter, Novia, is the physiotherapist at the Evan’s Bay Internediate School site which has a field with a bike track around it.

“We have two incredibly rusty, old adapted bikes with bits falling off but I thought we should have something nice as well.

“The funding streams were not available for us because our students have complex needs.

“I told Mum about it and she has just been a fundraising superstar, selling anything that is not nailed down.

“Now she has the garage sale

coming up that will hopefully allow us to purchase some adapted bikes.”

The adapted bikes are often three wheel tricycle bikes with back rests, seat belts and handles at the back where people can walk alongside the students.

“We want kids to be out and about and enjoying their playtime.”

Novia hopes to have the bikes in time for summer.

Pip says while there have been challenges throughout the nine month process but people have been “generous beyond words”.

One of my friend’s gave me $1000 and people have been generous with their goods, even just $1 or $5 gets us going in the right direction.

“I sold my pearls because they weren’t giving me any happiness, I’ve sold old coins and we did a big clothing sale.

“I just love my community.”

The garage sale will be held at St Ninian’s Church on Saturday September 19 from 9am to 12:30pm.

“We are really hoping this event will get us to our goal and I’m confident it could be,” Pip says.

inbrief news Karori School gala cancelled for 2020 Karori Normal School has cancelled its annual Gala for 2020, meant for October 17, citing unreasonable pressure on the school community during the Coronavirus pandemic.

Some pop-up stalls will still happen at the school during terms three and four.

The school hopes the gala will return in 2021.

Backed by strong customer demand, Waikato-based fuel supplier Waitomo Group has announced its fourth Wellington fuel stop will open later this year in Tawa.

A market disruptor, Waitomo Group operates three sites in Tinakori, Upper Hutt and Johnsonville and is actively looking for other Wellington sites.

The new Fuel Stop is located on Main Rd, Tawa, adjacent to the Outlet City shopping centre. It will offer commercial and retail customers Unleaded 91, Premium 95 and Diesel.

The building has been operating since the 1960s Wellington City councillor Simon Woolf, who holds the sport and recreation portfolio commented in last week’s Independent Herald, there were

maintenance issues with the building “It’s one of those situations where maintenance has been deferred for so long that the building is no longer redeemable.

“There are three or four aspects with the building when it comes to occupational safety and health as well so it’s just not realistic.”

Simon says he “is being petitioned by heaps of people” to keep the doors open and he does sympathise with them.

Attempts to reach Dame Susan for her comments on the situation were unsuccessful.

Jack Tynan leaves stellar sports legacy Karori cricket and hockey icon Jack Tynan died on Sunday, he was 94.

Jack excelled at both sports but it was hockey where he made his most memorable sporting moment.

He was a long-standing member of the Karori Hockey Club and was a member of the New Zealand men’s hockey team between 1948 to 1956.

New Zealand Olympian No 125, Jack captained them at the Melbourne Olym-

pics in 1956 where they finished sixth.

His sons, Peter and Mark, also represented New Zealand in hockey.

Jack was a skilful midfield player and a kingpin for the Karori Hockey Club.

He played for Wellington from 1943 to 1956 and went on to coach the side for his last eight years in the team.

In cricket, Jack played 136 matches for Karori, scoring 4280 runs including three centuries.

He is one of just eight batsmen to surpass 4000 runs for Karori.

He was also a handy bowler, taking 103 wickets with a best return of four for 16.

He played four games for Wellington, scoring 80 runs and taking two wickets.

In 2012, Jack was one of 29 Sports Legends of Wellington honoured in permanent plaques unveiled by Sport Wellington at the ASB Sports Centre in Kilbirnie.

Karori sports identity and Olympian Jack Tynan has died, aged 94.

Youth awards the start for bigger, better things

The Karori Youth Awards can be a stepping stone to bigger and better things, former winners say.

The 2020 event will be held online this year as lockdown restrictions make an event with a hall full of people challenging.

One of last year’s winners Grace Webster has been running DC Kids – a weekly club she initiated to provide free, fun activities for children from her neighbourhood for the past five years.

“Receiving the youth award inspired me. I felt really proud of myself, knowing that people I was helping appreciated what I was doing.

“It made me feel like what I was doing was important and valued by my neighbours and in my community,” she says.

Penny Roy, who grew up in Karori, is now a teacher by trade but has been recognised by the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) for the role she played in mentoring officers at the Afghan National Army Officer Academy in 2018 and 2019.

Captain Roy, a Reservist with the New Zealand Army, was presented with a Chief of Defence Force Commendation by Chief of Defence Force Air Marshal Kevin Short at a ceremony in Wellington last Friday.

Daniel Maiava also received an award last year for his efforts at the Karori Youth Centre.

Receiving an award at the Karori Youth Awards event was honestly an honour and a privilege.

“This experience has inspired me to really do good things in the community which I also hope inspires others, and has reminded myself of the spectacular value our community has to offer. I would just like to thank everyone who made this happen for me.”

National’s commitment to building the Petone to Grenada Link Road and second Terrace Tunnel shows it hasn’t forgotten about the transport needs of people in Wellington’s northern and western suburbs like Labour has, National List MP for Ōhariu Brett Hudson says.

National Party Leader Judith Collins today announced a $4 billion plan to deliver the modern transport infrastructure Wellington so badly needs, including a second Terrace Tunnel, undergrounding State Highway 1 at Te Aro, and the Petone to Grenada Link Road.

The Petone to Grenada Link Road is expected to make peak morning journeys between the Hutt Valley and northern Wellington about 10 minutes faster and 7 kilometres shorter.

It will provide another route to and from the Hutt Valley when SH2 is blocked or Wellington city when SH1 is blocked. It will also open up future residential or business growth opportunities by making Porirua, Wellington and the Hutt Valley better connected.

It will also allow for a direct public transport line from the western suburbs to the Hutt Valley.

“I have been advocating for Petone to Grenada for the past six years and now National has committed to building and funding it, with our timeframe being 202526,” Brett says.

“The Petone to Grenada Link Road will provide a critical link for the people of Ōhar-

“Wellington has 47,000 cars a day going through the Terrace Tunnel; many of which are commuters from Ōhariu. Congestion is an ongoing problem for them and National will fix it.”

“National has committed to completing the full Let’s Get Wellington Moving package. It was designed as a package and should be delivered as a package; you don’t build something and ignore a fundamental part of the plan.

Trio arrested in Tawa meth bust Wellington Police arrested three people and seized items including drugs, firearms, cash and jewellery following the execution of a search warrant in Tawa, on Friday.

The arrest of these three individuals will make a significant dent in the availability of methamphetamine across the city.

Items seized during the operation included methamphetamine, GBL, $30,000 cash, several firearms, a taser and high-value jewellery.

Those arrested included two men, aged 30 and 44, and a 31-year-old woman.

The trio are facing charges in relation to the possession and supply of methamphetamine.

Parks network up for consideration Greater Wellington is urging people to join a conversation about the future of its regional parks network through getting involved in consultation on its draft Toitū Te Whenua Parks Network Plan, 2020-2030.

GARDENING THIS WEEK Fruit trees problems and controls: By Wally Richards Yesterday I saw my plum tree beginning to leaf up and flower for the new season and likewise other deciduous fruit trees and ornamentals, including roses will soon be waking up.

Now is the time to prepare and start preventive measures for problems that are either seasonal or happened last year.

Let’s start with pip fruit, apples and pears; the major problem here is Codlin moth damage to the fruit.

Currently the main source of Codlin moths are right underneath your tree or in crevices on the trunk, tucked up in their cocoons waiting for the apples to form on the tree so they have some food for their babies.

Now they are not dumb (in fact I have yet to see anything in Nature that is dumb) they are not going to emerge as moths till there are apples on the tree of a reasonable size.

This will happen on a nice balmy night when the smell of apples in the tree brings them out and they will know where to fly to, to lay their eggs.

Now if they can’t smell the apples they don’t know where to go so they sit there waiting for the apple smell (or pear or walnuts) to happen.

Hopefully next day birds will see them and eat them.

In the past we used to plant marigolds under the apple trees in

winter or early spring so the smell of the marigolds would override the smell of the growing apples.

Nowadays we apply Neem Tree powder from the trunk to the drip line so the smell of this hides the smell of the tree/apples above.

But Codlin moths on the wing will be able to smell the apples and fly into your tree and lay eggs.

To hide the apple smell we can take the Neem Powder/granules and put them into little bags made out of curtain netting or nylon stockings and hang several of these in the tree at the cardinal points.

Wallys Cat Repellent which is naphthalene (what moth balls used to be made out of) has an even stronger smell.

As for cats I suggest that you have one or more plastic 2 litre milk bottles, cut the bottom off, take the cap off the other end; place a rock inside so it does not blow around and then put about a tablespoon of the flakes inside the milk bottle.

Sit this in the middle of where you want to protect and then sprinkle

a little of the flakes around and this deters 95% of the cats from the area.

Any of the above methods can be used also for protecting fruit from the Guava Moth.

Next Stone fruit: Plums are not affected by curly leaf disease but you may find that their leaves are curled up a bit later in the season.

This is caused by a plum aphid that feeds on the young leaves making them distorted when the leaves mature.

Spray the tree a few times with Wallys Super Neem Tree oil and Raingard about 14 days apart from leaf emergence to full leaf time.

Curly leaf in nectarines and peaches is a curse and does affect how good a crop you have.

A difficult one but there has been a lot of success by spraying the leaves with a combination of Wallys Liquid Copper with potassium permanganate and Raingard added, every 7 to 10 days as the leaves are forming.

Round the Bays set for February New Zealand’s third-largest participatory event is going ahead here in Wellington.

As many countries around the world remain in lockdown, Sport Wellington has announced that Wellington Round the Bays will take place on February 21 The event is expected to be the biggest yet with more people taking up walking and running as a result of Lockdown.

Organisers Sport Wellington are pleased to have most of their sponsors back on board and are looking forward to providing an event that promotes physical activity, health and wellbeing, and continuing their work towards achieving a goal of becoming a zero-waste event by 2025.

With a range of green initiatives planned for 2021, John Grieve, Event Director of Sport Wellington commented, “Last year we diverted 756kg of waste from landfill, eliminated over 30,0000 compostable cups and were the largest event using reusable cups, among other initiatives. This year we are planning to continue our efforts to be an environmentally-friendly event.”

Public submissions on the plan are open until 5 October.

Within the draft plan are rules for housing development across Wellington’s outer suburbs. The proposed rules will promote greater housing density, particularly in areas deemed to be sufficiently close to rapid transit stops.

This includes Crofton Downs, Ngaio, Khandallah, Johnsonville and Tawa.

As Johnsonville is deemed a ‘metropolitan centre’ the walking distance criterion will apply from edge of the town

centre. That covers a sizable part of Johnsonville on both sides of the motorway, as can be seen at the link above.

Wellington is a growing city.

Without question we need more housing to accommodate that growth. It is also inevitable that greater housing density will contribute to meeting that need. As will ‘greenfields’ development in the likes of Upper Stebbings Valley and Lincolnshire Farm.

What has also been clear from previous Council consultation is that people are not of one mind on what constitutes acceptable greater density and where it should be targeted.

Underground infrastructure capacity is something raised often, along with the character of our suburbs and what people consider makes them desirable and more liveable.

These are big decisions which could have a sizable impact on you. I encourage you to review the draft spatial plan and provide feedback.

Artist in Residence set to enlighten young artists Mix a professional creative artist with impressionable students eager to learn and the results can be quite transformative – the ultimate outcome of the Samuel Marsden Collegiate School Artist in Residence programme.

Marsden School established the Artist in Residence Programme in 1999 and continues each year to build a legacy of strong associations with professional practicing artists and designers.

This year’s Marsden Artist in Residence is Wellington based photographic artist Jasmine Chalmers.

Jasmine is spending five weeks at the school, creating her own body of work and inspiring students along the way.

Jasmine has a strong interest in nostalgia and the unusual which she interrogates through the still life genre. After completing a BA Hons in Sociology she worked in the public sector before completing a Diploma in Photography and pursuing her long-neglected creative drive.

She has exhibited regularly since then, her work bringing to life nostalgic scenes and con-

cepts with a nod to the painting traditions of Dutch vanitas, baroque and surrealism.

During her residency at Marsden, Jasmine is working with art students on studio lighting techniques and cultivating an eye for the uncanny using ordinary objects as inspiration.

“I am compelled to produce work that sparks the imagination; I utilise lighting techniques to cultivate drama and tension to make the ordinary seem surreal.

“Twisting the still-life genre to express a macabre element, my work is an immersive space for the viewer to sink into,” Jasmine says.

Jasmine’s creative outcomes will be on display at her Exhibition entitled Interior Vision, held at {Suite} Art Gallery, 241 Cuba Street, Wellington for two weeks from September 11.

“The impact of Covid-19 and the lockdown demanded that this project had to come to terms with this six-week interruption in the normal function of the home,” Jasmine says.

“The lockdown saw us confined to our interior sanctuaries.

Hey Everyone! Hope you had a fantastic week.

My wife and I managed to finally sync up our schedules and take a few days off and pop down to Queenstown (yes, yes, seems that is where everyone in NZ is going for a break). As Auckland is still in level 3 lockdown, things were incredibly quiet, and it reminded me of the mood living in Christchurch after the earthquakes. There was this sense of pause in the air – and all everyone wanted to talk about was the earthquakes (and now, Covid/Elections).

In an earlier article we talked about how elections, and juicy promises made on the campaign trail can sway people towards pausing their plans. People stop with anticipation and hope that some magical government promise will make things better. When people keep getting pushed to their individual limits, sometimes it is hard to wake up and go that 1% better every day – and it is easier to get sucked into the hate in the media or be soothed by the hopes and promises that happen on the campaign trail.

This year more so than other years has been full of change and disruptions that have put a lot of stress on many people in our community (and around the world). It is important that we as a country encourage leadership and innovation, and not just words and actions for the sake of votes. Just like every year, the election process will continue to feed the hopes of many and there will be home buyers and sellers who will just pause for a brief period.

Just like any ‘pause’ in the market, it simply postpones the need to sell and buy for a short period of time, condensing those actions into a higher market after – just like what happened after level 4 lockdown.

In life there are more important things than every last dollar, I get asked all the time to give advice on when is best time to buy and sell, and what is the best way to sell a house for maximum dollar

– however, you will be surprised how few people actually take the path of maximum money.

Don’t let all the distractions take away from what is most important to you and your families. If you need to sell, sell! If you need to buy, buy! If you don’t… well… don’t. Regardless of what the market is like, there is always a good strategy to buy OR sell effectively. Community funding a boost for Wellington Over $1.4 million of Sport NZ’s new community fund available in greater Wellington region Applications are now open for Sport NZ’s fund – Tū Manawa Active Aotearoa – for community-based programmes and projects targeting children and young people at most risk of missing out or being less active. $1,425,425 of the fund will be available in the greater Wellington region over the next twelve months, to be managed and distributed by Sport Wellington on Sport NZ’s behalf.

Tū Manawa replaces and improves on Sport NZ’s Kiwisport Regional Partnership Fund and now has double the funding available - $68 million over four years, of which half is from the $265 million Sport Recovery Package.

Where Kiwisport only focused on organised sport, Tū Manawa will also fund play and active recreation.

It also has a distinct assessment process for Kaupapa Māori organisations.

To ensure the funding reaches these groups, Sport NZ is partnering with the

A trio of brothers create slice of history

For only the third time in North Wellington’s history, three brothers played top flight football for North Wellington FC in the same game.

North Wellington FC’s Central League match against Petone saw the Manuel brothers all play for the club’s

first team with Tiahn and Riley coming off the bench to join Jackson, who started the game.

There have been opportunities for the milestone in recent weeks but the planets finally aligned and coach Lloyd O’Keefe made the call to give the North Wellington supporters what they had been

hoping for, for some time.

It was a proud day for the Manuel family and is not an event that occurs too often.

In 1987, the Shields brothers (Brett, Grant and Paul) played together for North Wellington and in 2003, the Thomas brothers (Jeremy, Michael and Andrew) also played for the club.

Wellington club cricket schedule released

The Cricket Wellington senior men’s club season calendar is complete with competition dates for Division 1 through to Division 8 and Intercity One-Day and T20 games confirmed.

The Rothbury Insurance Brokers Division 1 and 2 competitions follow a similar structure to last season. The Ewen Chatfield Trophy and Hazlett Trophy One-Day competitions will run from October to December with the Ewen Chatfield Trophy final taking place on January 10.

The T20 Cup will run over four separate weekends, starting on January 9, and resuming with the semi-finals and final on January 24. All weekends will incorporate double-header fixtures with teams playing two games each Saturday, apart from the opening weekend of fixtures. This means the Ewen Chatfield Cup finalists will begin their T20 campaign’s on Saturday January 9 and play the Ewen Chatfield Trophy final the following day.

The Wellington T20 Premier League will once again take place this season.

The Wellington Firebirds and the best T20 players from the men’s club competitions will represent the Cuba Kings, the Mt Vic Vikings and the Valley Vipers on December 18 and 20 – either side of the final round of the Ewen Chatfield Trophy.

The Pearce Cup and Hazlett Trophy Two-Day competitions will begin on the final weekend of January with the three-day Pearce Cup final scheduled for March 26-28.

Rob Law Max Recruitment Division 3 and 4 competitions originally scheduled to start in early November have now been brought forward and will start on October 17, due to an inability to extend the season into April as originally planned.

All other senior men’s cricket will get underway a week earlier than originally planned with all competitions starting on November 7.

As the name implies, the main focus is on steam motive power, and it is usual for Steam Incorporated to have at least two of its steam locomotives in full operational condition.

However, Steam Incorporated also owns and operates heritage diesel locomotives, both on the main line and for shunting duties around the depot at Paekakariki.

RELIEVING INDIGESTION & HEARTBURN Who hasn’t suffered from indigestion and heartburn, especially after overdoing it with food or drink, or when rushing meals? These are very common conditions although for some of us, indigestion and heartburn happen for other reasons and can cause considerable discomfort.

It’s good to know that help is available from your Self Care pharmacist.

With indigestion (or dyspepsia), we can feel sick and experience gas, or a bloated feeling, in the stomach. “Indigestion causes discomfort and pain in the area between your ribs and belly button, and occurs during eating, or immediately after” advise Self Care pharmacists. A common symptom of indigestion is heartburn, where there is a burning feeling rising upwards from the stomach towards the throat. The acid contents of the stomach return, or ‘reflux’, back into the oesophagus (the space between the throat and the stomach, which is shaped like a tube) and causes irritation there.

Indigestion and heartburn can be caused by: • Foods such as cabbage, onions, cucumber, curries and chocolate.

• Certain drinks, e.g. alcohol, fizzy drinks, strong coffee and tea.

• Eating food too fast; eating fatty or large meals, especially late at night.

• Stress and anxiety, smoking, bending and stooping, being overweight.

• Pregnancy • Certain medicines – such as aspirin and other anti-inflammatory medicines for pain and arthritis.

Where these medicines do not help, or symptoms are experienced as often as 2 or more times per week, other medicines may be required that decrease the amount of acid made by the stomach. There are several different types of medication available that do this. Your pharmacist can, in certain circumstances, supply these medicines without a prescription for the short term relief of heartburn symptoms. Your Self Care pharmacist will advise if this is appropriate for you.

“If there is still no improvement with lifestyle measures along with short-term use of medicines, or if symptoms suggest another cause, then we would refer you to your doctor for further investigations and treatment”, confirm Self Care pharmacists. “Our Indigestion & Heartburn fact card has more information, so ask us for a copy.”

Try to identify the cause of your indigestion or heartburn and if possible avoid these things. If the medicines you take give you symptoms, let your pharmacist or doctor know. Sometimes taking food at the same time as you take your medicines can help. Remember to take your medicines with a glass of water, while sitting or standing upright.

According to Self Care pharmacists, “there are changes you can make to help prevent or reduce symptoms of indigestion and heartburn. They include stopping smoking (see the Quit Smoking fact card); avoiding rich, spicy, fatty foods, and large meals late in the day, and eating smaller meals; having plenty of physical activity – at least 30 minutes most days; losing weight if you are overweight (see the Weight and Health fact card) and learning to relax and sleep well (See the Sleeping Well fact card).” Sometimes focusing on lifestyle changes may be all that is needed to stop indigestion and heartburn.

If medicines are required, your pharmacy has a wide range of products available for the short-term relief of heartburn and indigestion symptoms. “We can assist you in selecting the one that is best for your situation”, advise Self Care pharmacists. Antacids neutralise excess acid in the stomach. They can provide quick and effective relief but their effects don’t last long. Reflux symptoms can be relieved by medicines called alginates that form a ‘raft’ on top of your stomach contents, helping to prevent them being

The Phoenix fail to strike back That was all a bit soft from the Wellington Phoenix, wasn’t it?

Hardcore Nix fans will still praise their season as an immense success after they finished third in the regular A-league season but their early finals exit to sixth-placed Perth Glory, on Saturday, was a flat end.

Ufuk Talay’s men dominated the game on the stats sheet.

The Phoenix had 31 shots at goal compared to just 15 from Perth.

The Kiwi side also completed

518 passes compared to just 252 from Perth as they had 68 per cent possession for the match.

The obvious answer is they lacked a finisher, a striker to make the most of their dominance.

They missed Gary Hooper.

The veteran presence was back in the UK after a season-ending injury and boy they could have used him.

“Football’s a cruel game sometimes,” Talay says.

“You dominate a game, create enough opportunities to win and it’s a recurring theme from the last game against Newcastle. If we’re not clinical in front of goal, we can’t win games. We create, but we’re just not clinical.

“We gave them one opportunity where they scored and then I think we totally dominated the game but we didn’t score a goal to get ourselves back into it.”

Considering the disruptions, the

regular season and the losing streak the team started with this season, the Wellington-based franchise can be happy with their season even if it did end abruptly.

The question now will be around player retention and scouting for the next season.

Gary Hooper is a quality striker but two questions remain.

Can he stay or get healthier than he was this season? I doubt that.

What you’ve had is what you’ll

get with him and the other question is does he want another season in yellow and black?

Liberato Cacace and Ulises Dávila are another pair of attacking players who seem to have a good affinity with one another.

The future does look promising if the Phoenix can find a potent striker, or two, for their next campaign.

Hopefully, that will see some fixtures played in the capital, global pandemic pending.

North Wellington triumph as form guide stacks up

There weren’t too many surprises in the men’s Central Football League results last weekend but the plot thickens as to which team will reign supreme and which side won’t come out of the sheds next season at the elite level of regional competition.

After 11 of 18 matches played, Wellington Olympic can claim best goal difference in the league at 24 up while Wairarapa are minus 25 after the two teams clashed at Wakefield Park on Saturday afternoon and Olympic romped away with an 8-1 win. It was a little more sedate at Fraser Park where Lower Hutt could do nothing to prevent Miramar Rangers recording a 2-1 win and keeping their slim lead at the top of the table. Western Suburbs were comfortable 3-1 winners at home to Napier City Rovers and Waterside Karori found another gear and had a solid enough win in the end in their 5-3 result over Stop Out. Petone are keeping Wairarapa company at the bottom of the table on 8 points after losing 3-1 to New World Newlands North Wellington at Memorial Park.

four minutes for Petone to even the ship to make it 1 all after a horrible defensive lapse by the visitors.

Seventeen minutes into the second half Bertie Fish clawed one back for Norths to make it 2-1. Again just four minutes later, a well worked team move by Norths put Jesse Randall into space and he neatly lobbed the keeper to round out the afternoon for the 3-1 result to North Wellington.

North Wellington FC’s other top sides found themselves on the wrong end of the results sheets on the weekend. The Innkeeper North Wellington Women’s Premier side had the best result by sitting out a bye.

The Innkeeper North Wellington W League team hosted Wairarapa United but eventually succumbed to their Masterton visitors in hotly contested 3 -2 loss. It was all smiles in the borough when Tawa had a dominant 3-0 victory over the Newlands Arms North Wellington side in the Men’s Premier League.

Tawa made best use of their home court advantage and put on a more polished and consistent performance across the park.

Johnsonville eye first win in almost two years

The Johnsonville Hawks premier rugby team will have their best chance this season to end their near two-year losing streak when they take on Avalon at Fraser Park.

Johnsonville have gone close on two ocassions this season, including a fortnight ago, when they let a first half lead slip against Oriental Rongotai to lose 24-18.

Avalon, are also winless this season and

they have struggled to be competitive for much of the season.

In comparison, Oriental Rongotai beat Avalon 66-0 last weekend.

Johnsonville were beaten 34-10 last weekend by Wainuiomata at Helston Park last Saturday.

Andrew Ellis, one of the real positives for the Hawks this year, switched from fullback to centre while also continuing the goal-kicking duties.

He added five points with the boot

while Irish-born fullback Niall Delahunt added a try.

Johnsonville coach Roy Kinikinilau will be eager to see a near 80-minute performance.

His team has shown glimpses of what they are capable of but a lack of player continuity and depth, particularly at lock and loose forward has made things challenging.

Prop PJ Sheck has been a constant in the front row.
