Fire and family

Firefighter Paul Lyall has turned his passion into a career lasting 56 years.

After serving communities like Johnsonville, Paraparaumu and Wellington Central since the mid-1960s, the 75-year-old will call it a career in August.

However, his son, Aaron, who is based at the Johnsonville station looks set to carry on the family name for many years to come.

“I’m pretty open-minded about retirement, time catches up with everyone eventually,” he says.

“There have been people that said I’d be doing the job with a Zimmer frame but that won’t be the case,” the 75-year-old says.

“I’ve been with the Wellington brigade since 1965 and was a volunteer before that so it’s been a big part of my life.

“When I first started volunteering I use the expression we were fighting fires in jockstraps and handles, especially considering the calibre of equipment we have today.

“In those days, if you stopped outside a fire station to tie your shoes, you were likely to be dragged inside.

Pau l says he a lways enjoyed serving the community whether that was changing a smoke alarm or battling a big blaze.

He says the role has changed over the years with an added emphasis on procedures and protective equipment.

“House fires are a lot hotter these days, many of them will melt down around your ears with some of the plastic that is in them.

“The procedures and processes have changed for the better.

“It’s important to have a positive mindset especially when it comes to keeping up the fitness.”

Paul says he is proud Aaron has joined the fire service.

“He’ll be a senior fireman at Johnsonville officially come September and I wish him all the best.

“There is a family feel to being a firefighter even though it does take its toll on your family at home.”

Aaron says he admires his father’s dedication to the role.

“I’ve spent my birthdays, and many Christmases at the fire station,” he says “He’s spent almost 60 years of his life in the fire service so I think retirement will take some getting used too.

“He may need a small job to ease himself into retirement.”

O’Connor puts fate in hands of Ohariu voters

Oha r iu Labour MP Greg O’Connor thinks it is a combination of his community cop past or his West Coast roots which has made him remove himself from the party list for the upcoming elections.

The rare move, which has Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern’s blessing, means if Greg is not voted

back in for a second term, he will be out of parliament altogether.

“I’ve been here for three years now and I feel the community has had a chance to get to know me and judge me and so if they want somebody else they shouldn’t have to put up with me,” he says.

“It’s a bit old fashioned but I really enjoy the electorate and I want to build on the work I’ve already done.

“Having been in the police it’s like being a community cop and I really enjoy getting out and meeting the people and finding out who does what,” he says.

“There’s probably a bit of the West Coaster in me with that as well.”

“It’s a big electorate going from Wadestowm right through to Tawa and there are a lot of different communities and it’s

something I really enjoy.”

Greg says he will still be persuading people to give their party vote to Labour as well but he was comfortable to leave his fate with the hands of the Ohariu voters.

“My job is to be a circuit-breaker, to find where blockages are and then find solutions for the community and I’m committed to continuing that.”

NZ Post ‘super depot for Grenada

A new NZ Post ‘super depot’ is to be constructed in Grenada.

In an announcement on Monday, NZ post says the Wellington super depot is due to open in 2022.

NZ Post plans to invest around $18 million in the latest global technology that will sort and scan parcels at a much faster rate than what we have now.

“We know that customers really want complete visibility of where their parcel is at all times of its journey – and this technology will improve our ability to do this,” says NZ Post chief executive, David Walsh.

“The depot will have a 10440 square metre processing floor - about the size of a rugby field - with plenty of room for processing New Zealanders’ parcels.

“We are proud to be contrib-

uting to the Wellington regional economy over the next two years, with the projects main contractors, Aspec Construction Wellington Ltd, expecting to employ around 350 people through 60 sub-contractors on this project,” says Ash Pama, the property owners’ representative.

It is part of a 10 year plan for parcel growth.

NZ Post plans to invest close to $170 million to double its processing capacity – from 95 million parcels today to 190 million parcels.

During the COVID lockdown period, NZ Post received over 3.5 million parcels in the first two weeks of Alert Level 3. It had been planning for this quantity of parcels in 2023.

and has also been designed to accommodate a large solar power installation once battery technology makes this a viable option for our operation.

“We’re making this multi million dollar investment to support New Zealand businesses – both growing new businesses as well as major ecommerce giants.

“NZ Post is forecasting significant growth in the amount New Zealanders will buy online in the next decade – this was before the explosion in online shopping during the COVID-19 period.

“Last year online shopping in New Zealand grew 13 per cent with almost 50 per cent of adult New Zealanders now shopping online, and we are expecting this growth to continue.

“We’re pleased to be able to invest confidently in our future, to meet the growth in online shopping.”

Karori West Normal School Head to retire after 20 years

Retiring Karori West Normal School principal Janice Shramka thought there may have been a chance she could have snuck off into retirement quietly. ”With the Coronavirus outbreak I thought I had a chance to just go to my car and head off quietly,” she jokes.

However, after 20 years at the helm, she will be celebrated at several events in her honour before her final day next month.

“I’ve been in the profession 43-and-a-half years and that feels like it’s gone by in a heartbeat but 20 years here has gone in the twinkling of an eye,” she says.

“I regard it as a great honour to be the principal of this kura.”

Janice says she always had a passion for a multicultural, socioeconomically diverse school.

“The school has doubled in size over my time so I think I’ve grown with that role.

“If you had asked me 20 years ago I probably would have said I would

like to move to a bigger school at some point over that time.

“However, now the school has over 500 pupils and is one of the biggest in the Wellington area.”

She says she is most proud of the school’s relationship with the Treaty of Waitangi and the inclusion of Te Reo within the school culture.

“I am still passionate and committed to the role and this profes-

sion but I wanted to leave when I still felt that way about it.”

She says she will miss helping the students prepare the breakfasts for other students, the school powhiri.

“It is interactions like that which remind me how important that student-teacher relationship can be and what a positive impact it can have.

Students lead Covid thanks Being stuck at home for the lock-down for students and seeing parents go and queue for the weekly grocery supply under tight controls was such a new experience it made many realise how important it was to have a workforce willing to carry on.

Local student Amelie Cakebread decided when the opportunity came to get back to school and to level one it would be a good chance to show some thanks to those in the community who carried on and helped make the lock-down successful.

“Because they have been here through the whole lock-down

and stayed open that we could do something nice for them to say thank-you,” she says.

“The idea just came into my head and I told my dad and he sent an email to Mr Hinds the principal at Saint Benedict's, the school I go to, and the idea was to do a big thank-you card thanking them for staying open.”

Saint Benedict's Principal Michael emailed other schools in the area and organised others to do the same.

“I rang the other principals to get them to come along but it was student lead or as we say student voice that achieved this,” he says.

seen so many students go through my school from Year 1 right through to Year 8.”

Janice says she is touched at the prospect of so many farewells over the next few weeks.

“I think I just have to take a big, deep breath and go with it.”

Janice says she is looking forward to retirement but is still eager to stay involved with the community.

EYE ON CRIME In Johnsonville a grey Mazda Axela, parked overnight unlocked in a car port at the end of a driveway within the property of a house in Erris Street, was entered. The vehicle was searched and a handbag and a wallet containing store cards, a gift voucher and some cash were stolen. Also taken were cosmetics and two pairs of headphones. A blue Mazda Sport hatchback parked overnight on the street in Ironside Road was found next morning with all four mag wheels and tyres stolen. The owner of a silver Renault Megane hatchback handed it over to a friend who claimed to know someone who would do a quick and cheap oil change. The hand over took place in the Johnsonville Mall carpark. The vehicle was not returned and all attempts to have it returned have not been successful.

Two bank cards left in the vehicle have since been used fraudulently.

In Newlands a white Isuzu utility vehicle parked overnight on the road in Salford Street was broken into via a smashed front passenger

window. A radar detector and a spray painting gun were stolen.

In Khandallah a silver Mazda Tribute stationwagon, parked locked overnight within the property of a house in Nicholson Road, was entered but there was no sign of a forced entry. A search was made of the vehicle’s interior but nothing was stolen. A black Volkswagen Golf and a blue Mazda 6, both parked unlocked overnight in the driveway of a house in Clark Street were entered and searched. There is nothing reported stolen. A red Citroen DS4 parked unlocked overnight in the driveway of a house in Simla Crescent was entered and a high value handbag containing cash was stolen. An emergency kit and pair of headphones was also taken. A red Audi A4 stationwagon parked unlocked in the driveway of a house in Glen Tui Grove was entered and an Apple cell phone and a charging cable were stolen. A silver Mazda Tribute stationwagon parked locked overnight within the property of a house in Nicholson

Road was entered although there was no indication of force having been used. The vehicle had been given an obvious search but nothing has been reported stolen. The owner of a house in Simla Crescent has had a new roofing job done on his property. He hired a skip for the specific purpose of disposing of bricks and the old clay roofing tiles. On completion of the work he called the company to collect their skip but stipulated that as the skip was on his property he wanted to know when it would be collected.

There appears to have been a breakdown in communications between both parties lasting a couple of weeks and no collection date was fixed. Meanwhile the house owner continued work on his house and painted lengths of new galvanised steel guttering which were placed on the skip to dry. He was absent for a short time at the back of his house and when he returned the skip had been taken away, so had his new galvanised guttering. At the time of this report no progress had been

made in deciding responsibility for the loss.

In Ngaio a house in Perth Street left unlocked was entered and a laptop computer was stolen. A blue Subaru Impreza hatchback, also left unlocked and parked on the road, belonging to an occupant of the house, was entered and a substantial sum of cash and vape equipment were taken from the glove box.

A black Subaru Impreza saloon parked locked overnight in Heke Street was stolen.

In Crofton Downs the lockable area of a construction site in Churchill Drive was broken into during the weekend. Security locks had been cut off to gain entry. Tool boxes were accessed and various items stolen.

In Karori a locked roller door to a detached garage of a house in Campbell Street was forced open and an off road trail motor bike, a lift stand and helmet were stolen.

Some power tools, a radio and hand tools were also taken.

In Wilton a window was smashed

at the rear of a house in Gloucester Street to gain access. A collection of jewellery items, a pair of prescription glasses, two cameras and some energy drinks were stolen.

A CCTV camera was triggered and footage shows a hooded and masked male intruder. A grey Subaru Impreza stationwagon parked locked and secure overnight on Pembroke Road was stolen. A blue Toyota Hilux utility parked locked and alarmed overnight on Pembroke Road was broken into via a smashed left rear quarterlight window. The vehicle was given a messy search and some items were thrown from the vehicle, but nothing reported stolen.

In Wadestown the garage of a house in Anne Street was forced open and some tools were stolen.

A garage in Sar Street was entered overnight through a forced door. A blue Subaru Impreza saloon inside it was stripped of its turbo system and manifold unit. Power tools were also among an incomplete list of stolen items.

Karori Lions ready to roar The Karori Lions are ready to get back into action.

After the Coronavirus lockdown forced the club to adapt to digital meetings, it’s full steam ahead with normal routine at Level 1.

The club’s vigorous activities over the past year had provided a good balance sheet, enabling donations to be made promptly to the Wellington City Mission, the Wellington Night Shelter, Ronald McDonald House, UNICEF NZ, and ZEALANDIA, in this particular time of need.

A long-planned major donation of $10,000 was made to the Wellington Hospitals Foundation, in support of New Zealand Lions’ pledge of half a million dollars to establish a play and learning area in the new Wellington Children’s hospital (the “Playscape” project).

The club’s spectacles recycling project, including the sorting, cleaning and testing of used spec-

tacles destined for re-use in the Pacific Islands, continued throughout all lockdown stages, as did knitting by some members for the Neonatal Trust and Wellington Hospitals Foundation. Members continued to collect aluminium for recycling; other members made contributions to Lions administration and training at a district and national level.

During Level 2, through a member involved with the Karori Community Garden, the Karori Lions stepped in when help was needed to hire a trailer to load up with high-quality manure donated by a farm in Otaki.

Some projects were put on hold, and have now been rescheduled. A foodbank collection will be held in Karori Mall on Saturday 4th July; the popular e-waste recycle event is now to take place on Saturday July 25 at the Karori Community Centre, and the annual Community Book Fair, a joint project with Ka-

A giant hoard of Easter eggs is waiting to be delivered to residents of local rest homes.

Karori Lions President Joanne Knight says,

“We had a busy few months preceding the Covid lockdown period, including the Super Garden Trail in November, and culminating in our 49th annual Karori Karnival in February.

“Once again this was a very successful event, and at that time we

had no idea what lay ahead of our community.

“Karori Lions are here for the community, and we are always looking for ways to help within our means. We are an inclusive club, and welcome new members from all sectors of our community.”

Thanks to the Bears Out walking in any street in Wellington during lockdown you’d have noticed teddy bears everywhere. On duty all through lockdown from their posts in windows and car rear windows, their important role was to make walks more fun for children and parents alike.

The people at St Luke’s Anglican Church think they need a bit of special recognition, and extra hugs for their unstinting duties.

On Sunday 28 June the Wadestown church is inviting the community to a special end of lockdown service at 10am, followed by a Teddy Bear’s Picnic in the hall.

Event organiser Liz Prins says the event shows the importance of community spirit.

“The local community pulled together strongly, particularly in the early days of Alert Level 4 when we were all really worried about COVID-19. Thanks to the incredible efforts of all New Zealanders we’re almost back to normal daily life and our church family are back in our church. That’s worth celebrating.”

Tours, gardening and more at Karori Cemetery The Friends of Karori Cemetery will be at the Shelter in the cemetery from 11.00am until 3.00pm on the first Sunday of each month until October offering to assist anyone looking for a family plot, and help with location finding.

This service is free and doesn’t need booking - donations would be most welcome.

In addition, there will be tours each Sunday, at 11:00 am and 1;30pm, featuring many heritage aspects of the oldest part of the cemetery and including stories of murder & mayhem.

The tours cost $10 per person and are free to children under the age of 12.

Bookings are essential - email friendskaroricemetery@gmail.com to book and get more information.

Tours last for 1.5 hours, easy walking, and are weather dependent.

The Friends of Karori Cemetery is keen to establish a gardening group at Karori Cemetery, to brighten and enliven parts of the cemetery not reached by the Wellington City Council mobile gardening team.

They are looking for an enthusiastic gardener who is prepared to convene a group of likeminded enthusiasts to plant identified areas with appropriate shrubs, flowers, and natives, and ensure their maintenance and seasonal vibrancy.

Karori students trade-up for a cause

A group of Year 7 and 8 students at Karori Normal School are using their entrepreneurial skills to raise funds for their chosen charities.

Each student started with an item under $10 in value they purchased from an op-shop and have spent the past few weeks trading and haggling for items around their friends, family and community they could then sell at auction to raise money for the charity of their choice.

The silent auction for the 21 items closes at 3pm today and it is run through the school.

Money raised going to several charities including the Wellington Free Ambulance, Child Cancer Foundation and Wellington SPCA. Some of the auctions include jewellery, mountain bikes, sports equipment, books.

novan says she was inspired by a Christchurch man starting with a plastic spoon and trading his way to a ute.

“All the students have been buzzing about the project,” she says.

“It’s been fun to do something new with the older students.

“A lot of them spent a long time thinking about what to get from the op-shop so I felt they were really engaged from the beginning.

Nicola says with each student picking their own charity to support, it has given many of them a sense of community.

“We’re not really sure how much money we will raise but it is great for the students to give back and see their hard work pay off.

Newlands Food Bank demand surges The Newlands Food Bank has continued to operate during the present crisis and has supplied food to clients from Wilton to Tawa’ says Chairman of the Community House and Co-Ordinator Ray Good.

Over the past nine weeks they have supplied food parcels to 195 families.

This represents an increase of

140 percent on normal food parcels supplied.

‘Now, as we enter the Level 1 period, the Community House Committee is concerned that there may be a number of residents who, over the next few days/weeks, may suffer some form of hardship and will need our assistance,” says Ray. ‘It is important that these people

come to us, if they require assistance ,and we can either arrange a supply of food, or if other forms of assistance is required direct them to the appropriate agency.”

Ray says if a family require a food parcel there is no need to physically come to the Community Centre and all information is confidential.

4 First Home Buying Tips You may not have thought about.

It is always an honour serving this community in real estate, as we are very fortunate to have a broad range of properties for sale and guiding first-time sellers and buyers is always a pleasure. However, with the limited number of houses for sale, we are always seeing firsthome buyers struggling to get into a property.

We’ve talked about how to construct an effective offer, reducing conditions, etc, in the past – but this week I thought I’d share 4 quick tips that might change your thinking a bit! Let’s get into it!

1. Time is the most important resource– So many first home buyers spend months and months finding that perfect home, only to miss out. If you currently do not own a property, you are sadly at the mercy of market changes. Ie; if you are renting at the moment and the market goes up $100k, you will be left behind. If you are struggling to get home, lower your expectations, get into a property so your investment can relatively move with the market.

2. Your first home is not your forever home – Some of the most financially successful first home buyers we’ve dealt with, are those who approached their first home purchase as a financial stepping stone that will catapult them into their second home with strong equity and value. Make sure your first home has opportunity for value adding (such as profitable renovations areas) and has a positive outlook for capital gain. By making good investment decisions in your first few homes, you will be in a better position later to afford your dream home.

3. Purchase to your means – Find yourself a good mortgage broker / manager and talk through your options. In almost all cases,

you will find that by purchasing a property at a price where your total deposit is 20% or more, you will be able to access better interest rates, cash back deals, not having to pay for valuations, and even better you may also be able to offer with no conditions in some cases (which as you know will allow you to be much more competitive). All which will save you money!

4. You can always sell the house – In most cases, as long as you weren’t completely silly about your purchasing process, the property you have purchased will not immediate depreciate, like most things you buy. Property has been typically described as a ‘brick and mortar’ investment for their long-term stability. Especially in New Zealand, where we haven’t seen any significant drops in this area going back to 1993. In terms of capital gains tax, there are some grounds for exemptions for genuine reasons.

Steam Incorporated at Paekakariki continues to prepare for its return to the rails With its engineering recertification now into the last stages Steam Incorporated is preparing for its return to the rails with a depot open weekend on 11 and 12 July.

Join the team at Steam Incorporated for a fun-filled weekend with the family, on the 11th and the 12th of July (School Holidays) from 10am to 3pm both days at our depot just off SH1 at Paekakariki. There will be plenty to see and do – both of our steam locomotives Ab 608 and Ja 1271 will be in steam giving rides to visitors, and our Da diesel-electric locomotives Da1431 and Da1410 will be on display. All of our sheds will be open

for visitors to look around, and volunteers will be present to answer any questions you may have. Inspect the progress on our heavy restoration projects Ka 945 and Da 1471.

Most of us have experienced headaches, even bad ones. But migraines are something else again. “They are headaches with special symptoms”, say Self Care pharmacists.

A migraine headache is severe, can last for many hours – even days, and is of a throbbing nature. The pain usually is felt on one side of your head, although it can spread to the other side. During a migraine ‘attack’ you may become very sensitive to light, noise and movement. You may also feel sick, and some people vomit.

Not every migraine sufferer knows when he or she will get a migraine but some people get early-warning signs that one is on the way. About a day or so before a migraine, you may start craving for sweet foods, yawn a lot, or feel irritable and withdrawn.

Some get what is called an ‘aura’ - a kind of premonition. These people see shimmering or zigzag lines, or lose vision in one eye, or both eyes. The ‘aura’ can happen up to an hour before the headache, or just five

minutes before.

Women tend to get migraine more often than men – due to changing hormone levels, especially around menstruation time. They get less frequent after menopause. Children can get migraine. Those who do often complain of tummy ache. If your child gets lots of tummy aches for no obvious reason, get it checked-out with your doctor. It could be migraine.

There are many theories about what causes migraine. Certain ‘triggers’ are thought to change blood flow to the brain and cause chemicals to be released that result in the migraine. “Some foods - like cheese, chocolate, wines or citrus fruits - are ‘triggers’ for some people,” advise Self Care pharmacists, “but don’t go depriving yourself of particular foods unless you know for sure that they bring-on your migraines”. Lack of sleep, missing meals, or high levels of stress also can bring-on migraines.

are available. They range from mild pain relievers that you can buy from a pharmacy and take as soon as you feel the pain coming on, to stronger ones requiring a doctor’s prescription. If you get migraines on a frequent basis, you may need long-term medicines to reduce the number of ‘attacks’, or try to prevent them. Talk with your doctor about this.

Most migraines last only a few hours but some people have very bad ‘attacks’ that last for anything up to three days. Resting or sleeping in a quiet dark room can help. It is common for most people to complain of feeling ‘washed out’ after a migraine and it may take a few days to feel like yourself again.

Talk further with your Self Care pharmacist about migraines and medicines used to treat them. Ask for a copy of the Migraine fact card that provides helpful self care tips on possible ways to avoid ‘triggering’ migraines, and how to manage them.

Study quantifies economic and health burden New research from Environmental Science and Research has quantified the health and economic burden of a common respiratory virus among New Zealand adults.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a major cause of respiratory infections in children, but the burden of disease in adults has been less completely studied. ESR scientist Namrata Prasad, who is also a PhD candidate at the University of Auckland, says findings from the study address a key gap in the understanding of RSV epidemiology.

“Most estimates of RSV-associated hospitalisation rates are from studies conducted in the United States. Additionally, few studies have assessed

RSV burden among adults by key demographic factors” she says “In this study we aimed to provide comprehensive estimates of the health and economic burden of RSV disease among adults aged over 18 years and assess any associated health disparities.”

The study focused on the seasonal incidence of RSV hospitalisations and direct health costs in adults in Auckland between 2012–15 and used data from the Southern Hemisphere Influenza and Vaccine Effectiveness, Research and Surveillance (SHIVERS). SHIVERS was funded by the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“We found RSV to be an important cause of disease and economic cost in adults, however, the burden of RSV disease was smaller than that due to influenza during the same time period,” Ms Prasad says. “We also found RSV to disproportionally affect specific groups of adults defined by age, ethnicity, and neighbourhood socioeconomic status.”

“No licensed RSV vaccine is currently available, but several adult RSV vaccines candidates are in development.”

Does it hurt having Laser hair removal?

Karori’s Chine Ang will get to demonstrate her design talents on a global stage next year.

The 17-year-old design tech student at Samuel Marsden Collegiate and her “quirky design for Puck” from A Midsummer Night’s Dream has been selected as one of four national finalists in the SGCNZ/ Dawn Sanders Shakespeare Costume Design Competition.

All four will be constructed by professional Costumier, Tina de Bes, to be modelled during the Otago Sheilah Winn ShakespeareF-

estival.

They will then be displayed at Shakespeare’s Globe in London for six weeks next year.

The supreme winner will be offered the opportunity to attend the week-long National Shakespeare Schools Production course in Dunedin, as the Student Costumier.

Year 8 Marsden student Unnamalai Alagusundaram, from Johnsonville, earned third prize in the SGCNZ poster competition - her poster is travelling to the Globe theatre as well.

Chine says she was enthralled by costume designs while watching

movies as a child.

“I’ve always been interested in fashion design for as long as I remember.

“I think my interest in costume design started when I watched Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland.

“The costumes in the film are so beautiful and I remember eightyear-old me was very fascinated (and I still am) with the scenes in which Mad Hatter could be seen making hats or clothes.

“I started actually making costumes when I began cosplaying around two years ago.

“Some of them were made fol-

lowing an existing design in an anime, while for some which were costumes for book characters, I would come up with a design myself.”

She says it is an honour to have received the opportunity.

“I think it’s wonderful that SGCNZ gives students chances to share their creativity whether through costume design, music, writing or other forms of art.

“I am very excited to see how the costume will turn out. It is always fun and rewarding in itself to create and design, but it is also such a nice feeling when your work can

be shared with and recognised by others.”

Chine says she had a clear image of what she wanted to create for Puck.

“I considered several characters from different plays, but I was most attracted to Puck’s character. While reading and watching the play, “I had a slightly androgynous image of Puck who is depicted as graceful yet mischievous. I chose a warm-toned colour scheme of green and gold, and accentuated the forest aesthetic with floral and leaf details.

“I was also inspired by ballet and figure-skating costumes.”

Milford magic something to appreciate

Sometimes it is better to be lucky than good and that is how my partner and I felt about our trip to Milford Sound last Sunday.

The day trip has been a bucket list item for me and I had never got the chance to go that far south.

Having booked the trip pre-Coronavirus, we both considered ourselves fortunate to have the opportunity to go at all.

However, this is the time fellow Kiwis need to broaden their horizons from within their own backyard so we certainly felt we were doing our bit to help a gutted local tourism industry.

The full-day trip saw us picked up from our Queenstown hotel at 7:20am to travel by modern 20-seater van through Te Anau and into Milford for a 1:30pm sailing.

The two-hour journey on the water was simply breath-taking.

Somehow, despite being in one of the wettest places on earth where it rains 66 per cent of the time and averages seven metres of rain annually, we got a June day without a cloud in the sky.

The natural waterfalls, hillsides and deep blue ocean water which ranged in depth from 30m to 300m at certain

points were simply stunning.

We saw seal pups and dolphins than swam alongside our boat or were simply relaxing on a rock.

It is truly one of New Zealand’s most beautiful, untouched gems.

The 12-hour journey made for a long but rewarding day.

Clearly, tourist numbers were down, we were told traffic through to Milford was down 90 per cent on peak standards.

Our tour group of 12 exemplified the harsh realities of Coronavirusimpacted tourism.

With international travel unrealistic at least for the short to mid-term, it is time, we as Kiwis appreciated what is on our own doorstep.

What we saw in Fiordland on Sunday, many people would have to travel halfway around the world for a glimpse of.

This year, despite all of its struggles, can offer an opportunity for all of us, regardless of the budget to see our country and its landscapes at its best.

If you’ve been putting off that long weekend trip to a nearby spot of this country, now is the time to do it.

Support the local cafes, bars, restaurants and accommodation. Most of all, get a better sense of appreciation for the stunning country we live in. Milford Sound put on a stunning day for our cruise on Sunday. Photo: Jacob Page

Johnsonville Softball Club celebrates its best

The Johnsonville Softball Club celebrated its success during the shortened summer season, on Saturday.

Many finals were unable to be played due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

Emma Francis was named top batter and most valuable player for the premier 1 women’s team.

Emma averaged .407 at the plate.

Melissa Brosnahan had the most RBIs (Runs Batted In) with 14.

Josh Jacobs was the top batter in the premier mens team with a .457 average.

He also had the most RBIs with 15.

John Macauley was named the

team’s most valuable player.

Corey Thompson was named the most valuable player in the premier two reserve team while Adam Hughes was named top batter with an average of .374.

Carter Young was named MVP of the under-18 team.

Steph Bremner won the same honour in the 2B womens team.

Chrissy Howe was named the most versatile utility for the 2A womens team.

Brent Neumayr was named MVP and Dave Field the top batter with a .359 average for the mens 2B Fossils.

Chris Lovatt was named the best batter for the TB Tosas with a staggering average of .621.

Joseph McAndrew was named MVP of the premier 2 Bombers.

GARDENING THIS WEEK Trying to beat garlic rust: By Wally Richards The shortest day is the traditional time to plant garlic cloves. These used to turn in to fat garlic bulbs and give you your own supply of garlic for use during the year plus enough to plant the following winter.

Unfortunately this has not happened for the last few seasons as a terrible rust disease has decimated crops.

Garlic Rust is a fungal disease that affects garlic, but can also invade other alliums such as leeks and onions. The spores of this relentless fungus (Puccinia allii) travel by wind, so a rust infection in one part of the garden may affect garlic (or other alliums) in another part.

Here is the traditional way to grow garlic: Garlic needs full sun, free-draining soil and its own bed (it doesn’t like competition from weeds or other crops). It won’t do well in light sandy soils, nor in heavy clay soggy soil. The more organic goodness in your soil, the better and bigger your bulbs will be. Dig in well-rotted horse manure, compost, seaweed, fish guts - anything you can lay your hands on.

Your garlic will only ever be as good as the seed you start with. Use only New Zealand-grown garlic as seed - the bulbs should still have trimmed roots on the base, whereas imported garlic must be scraped at the border.

This is important as last year several people said the garlic they

purchased and planted did not sprout.

Look for little root on the cloves you plants. My own, kept from last year, are already starting to develop new roots.

The purchased garlic (NZ) from supermarkets show little of this rooting.

Also imported or NZ grown can be subjected to radiation to prevent it being able to grow.

Imported maybe a condition applied by MAF to prevent disease or pests entering the country.

In NZ this may be done to prevent licensed strains, growers pay for, to become available for gardeners personal use.

Once you’ve source your seed, split whole bulbs into individual cloves (this breaks their dormancy).

Save only the fattest outer cloves for planting, about four or five bulbs.

Eat the skinny inner cloves or if short of planting material plant them as well.

Bury or press the individual seed cloves into the soil so they are 5cm deep, with the pointy end of the clove facing upwards.

Any shallower and they will actually rise up through the ground in a frost and end up sitting too close to the surface to root firmly. Space 50 to 70 mm apart but if you have plenty of space make about 100mm apart.

Expect to see green shoots within three to four weeks.

Want more business locally?

At the beginning of the season, garlic needs nitrogen, so any general NPK fertiliser is beneficial. The bulbs do the bulk of fattening up during September and October, so liquid fertiliser helps then too.

After October, lay off the food as you want the bulbs to focus on swelling up, not putting on more green top growth. You do all the above and the rust strikes and your crop is fairly much history.

We are going to try and prevent or reduce the damage caused by the rust by making the growing medium/soil better and strengthen the plants cells making it more difficult for the rust to establish and also by keeping our fingers crossed..

A few weeks ago I suggested things to do to prepare the soil environment where you are going to plant the garlic. I also mentioned a product which I was going to call Wallys Soft Rock. Unfortunately my supply of this has not happened so we are going to make our own. Follow the traditional preparation of the soil as above with ample animal manure , chicken manure, blood & bone, sheep pellets, Bio Boost (any or as many of the above as available) Also add Wallys BioPhos to the goodies at 100 grams per sqM. When you plant your cloves drench the soil with Wallys Silicon plus Boron Soil Drench with Magic Botanic Liquid (MBL) added. (Optional: you can

also add [if you have them] Mycorrcin and Bio Marinus Liquid Fish Fertiliser Plus) When you see the first appearance of green shoots starting give another drench of the Wallys Silicon plus Boron Soil Drench with MBL. You now need Wallys Silicon Cell Strengthening spray and Wallys Silicon Super Spreader mixed together in a handy trigger sprayer (as to label instructions) and when the new shoots are up about an inch or two spray them and repeat once a month till harvest.

The spray will keep well enough in the spray bottle stored in a shed so you do not have to mix it up fresh every time and can use up all that is left.

What we are doing with the spray is strengthening the garlic’s leaves making them less suitable for the rust disease to establish.

The silicon also aids the plants ability to get more energy from the sun and you will likely notice that the leaves will grow much bigger than normal as a result.

The silicon cell strengthen products are available individually or the three products as a kit.

Not only are they going to help with your garlic growing but should also be used when growing your tomatoes, potatoes and tamarillos to overcome the damage caused by the psyllids.

RTS stuck in groundhog day scenario It is about time pity set in for Warriors captain Roger Tuivasa-Sheck.

Undoubtedly one of the best players in the NRL, the 27-year-old must be sick of babysitting the 12 men in front of him in the defensive line.

Watching another dismal display from the Kiwi franchise against the South Sydney Rabbitohs, it was clear RTS was simply a cut-above.

Sure, the captain and fullback is earning $1.1 million a year but it

must be tough to lead a side with a constant losing record.

The 40-12 thumping on Friday night lacked heart but not from Tuivasa-Sheck who continued to be in the right place at the right time to diffuse dangerous situations at the back.

He is also the team’s main, and some would say only, attacking weapon with ball in hand.

When he has the ball, you can bet

he is going to get his head through the defensive line through utter determination.

It is fair to wonder whether he stands at the back and wonders what life might have been like if he had stayed at the Sydney Roosters.

Yes, he’s the face of the franchise and his form has always been top-notch, his level of dedication uncompromised but in a quiet moment he must reflect on all the team

success he passed up to come home and play for the Auckland-based franchise.

The fullback will be at the club until the end of the 2022 season, by which time he will be 29.

The Warriors have, in my opinion, the most consistent fullback in the competition and what’s more is they have him at the peak of his powers.

Sadly for him, he is stuck behind a forward pack which struggles to win

the battle up-front and a backline which needs his injection to look potent.

The Warriors continue to be a team waiting for it all to click.

The harshest of critics would suggest that has happened rarely in their 25-year existence.

At this rate, they look set to waste their best fullback in club history and one of their best ever attacking players.

Late goal earns North Wellington women a draw

It was a case of ladies before gentlemen on the weekend as far as North Wellington FC’s top sides went.

It was an early start on Saturday for the Innkeeper Johnsonville’s Women’s W League team who took on high flyers Wairarapa United at Masterton.

The 11am kick off might have suited the locals but their star-studded team didn’t come away with the points that they were targeting.

A goal to Wairarapa on the half time break was eventually cancelled out by one back from Ashleigh Mason just 10 minutes from full time to make a final score of 1-1 It may have been a single point for the North Wellington ladies but they have opened their account in the top-tier competition.

At Alex Moore artificial that same afternoon, atrocious weather made for an unpleasant time all round when the New World Newlands Central League side took on Petone.

Both teams wanted to get their first points in the competition and it was Petone who won the encounter by a solitary goal, four minutes into the second half. Debutant stand-in keeper Alby Kelly-Heald was called into

action at the break after the incumbent caretaker, Nic Stanton, suffered a nasty hand injury.

The youngster could do nothing to stop a close-range jab that smacked into the back of the net and he was cruelly let down by his defenders who were more spectators than participants at that moment in time.

Different day, same venue, same result was the order of the day for the Newlands Arms Men’s Premier side who took on Tawa.

Again a single goal to Tawa in the 23rd minute proved the difference between the two teams, notwithstanding that Tawa played the final third with a man down after a straight red card infringement.

The Innkeeper Johnsonville’s Women’s Premier team had a gutsy 1-0 win over Stop Out at Hutt Park. Three points and their maiden win was a great result for the young team.

In other matches in the Men’s Central League; Wellington Olympic suffered a shock 3-2 loss to Wairarapa United, Western Suburbs snatched a 1-0 win in the dying moments of their match away to Napier City Rovers, Waterside Karori grabbed another point with an impressive 2 all draw with Stop Out and Miramar Rangers had too much class when the overhauled Lower Hutt 3-1.

Encouraging signs despite defeat for Johnsonville

The Johnsonville premier men's rugby team will look to get their first win of the season against Poneke, on Saturday.

Johnsonville rugby assistant coach Ben Fisher says there are plenty of positives from their 34-5 Swindale Shield opening round defeat to Petone, on Saturday.

The team has not had a win in the competition for almost 18 months but Ben says there were encouraging signs against an experienced Petone team at the Petone Rec Ground.

“I thought there were plenty of positives, even just in our intent,” Ben says.

“We played into the wind in the

first half and had an opportunity to score early-on and if we’d done that, maybe things would have been different.”

Johnsonville trailed 17-0 at halftime but Ben was happy with how the team stuck to the task in the second half.

“Post-match there was a feeling that in previous years that would have been a 60-point blowout.

“Some of the younger guys certainly realised what senior rugby was all about but equally Petone realised they had been in a game.

First-five Ivan Vaisagote scored Johnsonville’s lone try.

Petone were assisted by 19 points from halfback Logan Henry.

Both he and reserve Ryan Imrie scored twice in wet and windy conditions.

Ben says debuting hooker Raja Shammy acquitted himself well along with the two props, captain PJ Sheck and Ha’amea Ahio. “ For a kid who is 19, I thought he performed well and showed why he deserved the starting jersey.

Veteran flanker Ben Cathro also came in for praise for his work-rate.

Johnsonville will play Poneke on Saturday at Helston Park.
