“The people of the community really consider it their event which makes us feel great when we are putting it on,” she says.

“I’ll admit I was pretty nervous sitting watching the Covid level announcement on Wednesday but once that went to Level 1 we just got on with it.”

The event, which is hosted by the Karori Lions, could not escape one typically Wellington issue on the day.

“The wind was an issue again but we want to do it in summer

Jo says a number of the stall holders come from the Petone version of the event and many of them had plenty of positives to say about their people.

“It’s fair to say that since early January my head hasn’t thought about much else but the Karnival.

Jo praised the support of Karori businesses for the event after the trying times of the past 12 months.

“We had 16 businesses all put together baskets with each valued over $100 and that meant

a lot to us,” she says.

“The whole environment seemed really vibrant and busy well into the afternoon,” Jo says.

She also praised the volunteers involved, many who had been involved for more than 20 years.

“We thank the public for their continued support, to have 50 editions and for it to still be extremely popular, it makes us feel really great.”

Cyrus’ swing efforts set to benefit more kids

A 13-year-old boy’s quest for accessible swings at his local playground is set to have a wider positive impact than even he intended.

Cyrus Dahl, who has cerebral palsy has raised almost $43,000 through his Givealittle page to have specially designed swings installed to enjoy at his local playground Tawhai Raunui Play Area in Woodridge, Wilton.

The initial target was $25,000 but with more money raised, Cyrus’ mum, Kris says the aim is to get more swings into other Wellington parks

once the original one at Raunui Play Area is established.

“We are hoping all kids get the chance to play now.

“The Council have said we can do more, so they’ll have two new swings going up in the Newlands Park upgrade and hopefully there will be one in the Ngaio upgrade and the Island Bay one as well so it’s been incredible,” Kris says.

Johnsonville Salvation Army store set to help youth

By Jacob Page Johnsonville’s Salvation Army Family Store is helping the young people in the area gain opportunities.

The Johnsonville’s Salvation Army Family Store is set to host a late night shopping event next week.

The store will be open from 5pm to 8pm on March 5 will all proceeds going to help young people attend an Easter Camp at Mystery Creek in April.

Salvation Army Youth and Young Adults Johnsonville Corps representative Sarah Bridle says they hope to take 25 to 50 people from Johnsonville and more than 150 people from around Wellington to the April camp.

“From a Christian perspective, it’s a big weekend and in terms of young people, it’s amazing to see what happens when we get amongst a group of likeminded people and share experiences it’s great.”

The Mystery Creek camp is set to have more than 5000 high school-aged people from around the country attend.

“Everyone is looking at paying around $180 to $220 to attend so any cost that we can shave off helps that.

“It’s great that the Johnsonville Family Store is helping the church like they do and it makes a big difference to us and the work we do,” Sarah says.

“They are volunteers giving their time to help us each day.”

Author writes unexpected trilogy

North Wellington author Trish McBride has produced an unintended trilogy of books.

Trish has penned A Love Quilt a collection of 68 pieces of writing, most of which have been published in various contexts in New Zealand and America over the last decade.

Trish has been writing since her childhood in England. Highlights have included an

international religious journalism prize the London Tablet in 1994.

The overall theme is that the meaning and purpose of human life is learning to love ourselves, others, earth, cosmos, and Holy Mystery, one of so many names.

“I believe we are all on a spiritual journey, whether or not we call it that,” Trish says.

A Love Quilt is also the final part of a very unintended trilogy.

Its predecessors are Faith Evolving, A

Patchwork Journey (2005), and Exploring the Presence, More Faith Patches (2011).

“Between them, they cover the explorations and shifts in my faith journey as it has lasted for 70+ years so far.

“They are all offered to encourage readers to ponder their belief systems and spiritual journeys,” Trish says.

Councillors vote on draft city budget for the next 10 years

Public funding for Alex Moore Park’s new sports and community club rooms has hit its first of many targets.

Donations have raised more than the $50,000 Pledge Me target based on purchases of bricks and bar leaners in the facility which is set to be completed next month.

Funding campaign organiser Matt Claridge says he is delighted to have reached the initial target but there is still more to be achieved.

“The community is really getting behind the project but we would really like to keep the donations coming in.”

Matt says every donation, no matter big or small will have an impact for years to come.

The hope is the page will have 300 individual donations by the time it closes, it has currently ticked over 130.

North Wellington football legend and former All White Ben Sigmund has offered to have breakfast or lunch with one contributor as he lends his support to the project.

The overall project has a price tag of $4.2 million, with the Alex Moore Park Sport and Community Inc contributing $2 million towards building cost.

Wellington City Councillors met yesterday to agree on the city’s direction for the next 10 years.

Mayor Andy Foster put forward a draft budget for the Council’s consideration.

“The decisions we make on what to include in the draft budget and what to leave out are still subject to final approval,” said Mayor Foster.

“The budget outlines what we will be investing in, how much it may cost and how this will be funded. It is a budget for infrastructure and resilience and strikes the balance between what we have to do, rating affordability and a debt level that leaves headroom for both expected and unexpected future challenges.

“It provides guidance on how we will make Wellington an even better place to live, work, play and visit as we go into the future.”

A draft consultation document will be provided to the Annual Plan/Long-term Plan Committee meeting on 4 March.

Councillors will give final approval to this draft document, which will then go out for public consultation in April before a final plan is adopted in June 2021.

The key decisions made at yesterday’s meeting include: A significant uplift in capital spending – directed to infrastructure including for three waters.

Setting the Council’s debt to revenue ratio limit at 225% Exploration of new funding mechanisms for city housing, the central library and sewerage sludge investment.

Animal shelter upgrade goes to the dogs… and a peacock Dogs, chickens, roosters, geese, sheep, ducks, goats, pigs and a peacock (overnight) have passed through the doors of the Moa Point Dog Shelter – and it’s now getting a well-earned facelift.

The dog shelter, which has been on site for 53 years, is getting an upgrade to its facilities and security systems, including new cages, self-contained kennels, a plumbing refurbishment, and improved security cameras installed.

Built in 1968, the site has had upgrades over the years with the last renewal in 2015, but the shelter is due for more work, says Mayor Andy Foster.

“This site has provided an invaluable service to the city over the years, and these upgrades will be a welcome improvement for the welfare of the dogs that are impounded there. It will also create a better and safer working environment for our dedicated team of Animal Control Officers.”

In the past 12 months, 285 dogs have been impounded there, down from 382 in the previous year, possibly due to COVID-19 lockdowns with dogs being returned to owners rather than impounded.

But it’s not just wandering dogs that have come to the Moa Point

Dog Shelter. Plenty of native New Zealand wildlife and free-range animals have been picked up by the Animal Control Officers over the years, says Team Leader Animal Services Damian Nunns.

“We’ve rescued a 120kg pig wandering around Strathmore once, and he was returned to his rightful owner. We also found two escaped kune kune pigs in Grenada North, but couldn’t find their owners so rehomed them to a Wairarapa lifestyle block.

“We also get a lot of birds dropped off like a New Zealand Giant Petrel bird, and several little kororƗ have all paid a visit. Drain covers even had to be installed to stop them falling in.”

Manager Public Health Group, Helen Jones says the peacock that was found wandering around Newlands yesterday has been looked after at the shelter overnight as they try to find its owners.

“This is another example of how important it is to microchip any and all of your pets, so we can find you if you can’t find yours.

Microchips are so small, you could put one in a fish!”

Newlands Park will adopt the te reo MƗori name Pukehuia Park, following a vote by Wellington City Councillors today. Mayor Andy Foster says the name was put forward by NJƗ Hau e :KƗ o PaparƗrangi, kaitiaki of the whare on Ladbrooke Drive, during consultation for Newlands Park redevelopment. The proposal has the full support of mana whenua, Taranaki WhƗnui ki Te Upoko o Te Ika. “Pukehuia translates as ‘hill of the huia bird’.

‘Huia’ are now sadly extinct native birds that were once prolific in the area,” he says.

Councillor Jill Day, the Council’s MƗori Partnerships Portfolio Leader, adds that the te reo name, Pukehuia, was previously used to describe the area now known as Newlands.

“Adopting this name for the park is an important way to acknowledge the early history of the area. It also supports the goals of the Council’s Te Reo MƗori Policy, Te Tauihu, which was introduced in 2018.

“Te Tauihu recognises the status of te reo MƗori as a taonga and creates a framework to help guide the actions of the Council – to celebrate te reo MƗori and support the vision of Wellington becoming a te reo MƗori capital city by 2040.”

Pukehuia Park is currently undergoing a $3.6 million redevelopment, with work due to be completed in June. The huia bird will be incorporated in some design aspects of the park and in the on-site signage.

GARDENING THIS WEEK Improving your plants: By Wally Richards Last week we talked about the benefits of Magic Botanic Liquid (MBL) and how it assisted plants to be healthier and increased the nutritional value of your food crops.

Some gardeners asked whether it would assist with leaf diseases such as black spot and rusts.

The answer is that it can but it also depends on several other factors because there is no golden bullet that is going to fix problems when there are conditions or situations which are causing the problems.

For instance at the end of the season (which we are quickly heading to) conditions such as powdery mildew and other leaf diseases are going to attack your plants such as roses, pansy, zucchini as they are finishing the season. Leaf diseases are Natures Cleaners helping to breakdown and aid the composting of foliage that’s done its dash for the season.

Annuals of course will die and disappear and perennials such as roses will rest till the new season in the spring.

We can build up the health of our plants and make them more resistant to diseases during the growing season.

As we saw last week a two weekly spray of MBL can make the world of difference to our plants because we are supplying a range of elements and minerals that are likely lacking in our soils.

The soil is a very big factor in how well our plants perform. If you don’t have soil teeming with beneficial microbes, breaking down the nutrients

so that plants can take them up, you are in a sense starving your plants, no matter how much food you are throwing at them.

Soil life self generates if you allow it to happen so you don’t have to do anything to make it happen other than maybe applying products such as Mycorrcin (It is a special food for soil life, microbes and beneficial fungi).

What you have to do is stop killing the soil life. There are three factors that harm and kill your friends in the soil.

The first and most often applied to the soil in the growing season is chlorinated tap water.

The chlorine in the tap water is there to kill bacteria that might give you a tummy ache but in our garden we want those bacteria and we zap them with our hose.

I will give you an example that you will have seen countless times and likely never gave it another thought.

In the spring with ample showers of rain your garden plants come away and in the main look brilliant and healthy.

Later on the rains stop and you get out the garden hose and very soon that healthy sparkle has disappeared and leaf diseases start to show.

Then after a dry period of hose watering we have a nice period of rain and hello the plants perform and have a healthy sparkle again (till we have to use chlorinated water again).

Rain brings down nitrogen from the atmosphere which is also a boost for the plants but not containing chlorine

(we hope) means that the reduced microbe colonies in the soil have a chance to populate again.

They have a life cycle of about eight hours so in a day we can see three generations happening which is billions of helpers in your soil.

It costs $140 to get a 10 micron carbon bonded filter and housing to simply snap onto your outside tap which removes all the chlorine out of 16000 litres of water approximately (depending how much of the poison your water supplier sticks into the water). In some areas for any average garden you should get one or two seasons out of a filter for $40 replacement.

In some areas I have found about 2-3 months use only before you need to replace. Sediment in the water also drastically shortens the life of the filter.

Heavy-handed use of man-made fertilisers, chemical rescue sprays and herbicides also harm soil life, knocking back their populations.

It is easy to tell if you have a great soil with lots of soil life as it will have an abundance of earthworms.

This means also you are applying organic material to the soil instead of harmful acidic fertilisers.

That means animal manures, sheep pellets, blood and bone, compost made from non-green waste (green waste composts which may contain herbicides).

The mix would also reduce the disadvantages of the two when on their own.

Another excellent tool for obtaining plant health is Wallys Perkfection for Roses.

The active ingredient of Perkfection is phosphite ion or phosphonic acid.

I describe it as a tonic for plants, building the immune system to help overcome many plant diseases or prevent the same.

Magic on Buxus is for recovery or prevention of the nasty buxus disease and also a cure/prevention for silver leaf disease as long as the disease has not advanced too far.

Applied only monthly it will assist in helping to prevent many disease problems.

Connections made over community-inspired kai Teams from 11 Pǀneke suburbs will cook from food grown, caught, foraged, baked or brewed in their local areas, and serve up meals at events that everyone is invited to.

Meals will be hosted for Seeds to Feed from now until March 6.

Tickets will be sold on a ‘pay as you are able’ basis, with all revenue going back to the communities.

Throughout the summer months, suburb coordinators worked with their local teams to grow local produce, connect to local producers, create foodie workshops, and make a ‘Feed’ event for their wider community at harvest time.

“The festival embraces Wellington’s amazing food scene on a local grassroots plate and provides a platform to foster connectedness around local kai,” says Seeds to Feeds co-founder Elza Van Boxel.

“It is about celebrating the faces behind local food – from community gardeners, to foragers, chefs, bakers, and all those who dedicate their time and talents to nurture their communities.”

The initiative launched last year and is supported by Wellington City Council. It coincides with Local Food Week, an annual celebration organised alongside Neighbours Day Aotearoa which encourages everyone around New Zealand to do something to connect with their neighbours.

Last year’s first edition was held in six suburbs (Mt Victoria, Vogelmorn, Newtown, Miramar, Houghton Valley, and Berhampore) and was a great success, despite the country being in lockdown – all meals were prepared for delivery or pick-up.

This year the festival has expanded to also include

suburbs Te Aro, Karori, Aro Valley, Hataitai, and Raukawa.

Resilience Advisor Janey Thornton says the Council is pleased to support Seeds to Feeds for another year and to see the festival bring the city’s people and its gardens together.

“During lockdown last year, the value of community connections became clearer than ever, and we’re very excited to see what this year brings for Seeds to Feeds,” she says.

Senior Advisor for Community Development Jamie Shackleton says that the citywide Seeds to Feeds crew has been amazing at reaching out to City Housing garden coordinators across the city.

“I hope some of our gardeners will be able to participate this time around, and I’m really looking forward to seeing how the shared community meals go.”

Movin’ March gets schools active Several North Wellington school will take part in Movin’ March from next week.

The month-long free initiative that encourages students to walk, cycle and scooter.

Led by Greater Wellington Regional Council and supported by local councils, Movin’March invites schools (year 0-8) from across the region to get active over the month of March.

Last year over 37,000 students took part in Movin’March and more than 71 active students walked away with MYRIDE vouchers, Prezzy cards, Warehouse Stationery prizes, and Family passes to Zealandia, Wellington Zoo and Staglands.

Greater Wellington Regional Council travel choice coordinator Kirsty Barr says so far we’ve had an epic 127 schools that have already signed up for 2021.

“We have heaps of different competitions that encourage students and wKƗnau to participate.

From our ZKƗQDX photo competition to a new challenge called Movin’Minds, where students can think creatively about how to persuade their peers to walk or wheel to school,” says Kirsty.

Organ Recital in Waikanae Well-known organist Martin Setchell will perform for the Waikanae Music Society on Sunday 14 March. With an impressive international reputation as a performer, educator and conductor, he will present a programme of major works from the two great eras of organ music - German Baroque and French Romantic. Carter calls time on stellar career It took a while for Dan Carter to win me over at first.

I was a child who grew up loving Andrew Mehrtens and who thought he would be comparing all future Canterbury and Crusaders’ No 10s.

It’s fair to say after two decades, I’ll spend the rest of my life comparing not just red and black No 10s to the boy from Southbridge but all future All Blacks pivots as well.

Carter announced his retirement from all rugby on social media on Saturday night, though his

All Black career ended with the victorious 2015 Rugby World Cup final in which he was named man of the match.

Carter’s performance in that victory was masterful.

When the team needed a steadying influence, Carter kicked a drop goal to assure victory.

However, it was Carter’s complete domination of the British Lions at Wellington in 2005 that will live long in the memory of most fans.

It’s unlikely there’s ever been a more dominant display in a big

match in rugby.

He scored 33 points in the 48-18 victory in which British scribes referred to him as a genius.

His chip-kick and regather down the touch line for his second try is and forever will be iconic in All Blacks folklore.

Even as he aged, his form erratic, Carter answered his critics in the 2015 final.

That’s the mark of a champion.

Did it help he always had a forward pack that featured Richie McCaw, Tony Woodcock and

Keven Mealamu? Absolutely but his calm nature and ability to be both attacking threat and backline conductor has not been replicated since.

He achieved what many All Blacks say is the most important part of playing for the team, that is to leave the jersey in a better place than when you found it.

To achieve that in the All Blacks No 10 jersey is no small feat and an appreciation for just how good he was, won’t be fully appreciated for many decades to come.

The age old saying is that you don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone.

In Dan Carter, we had a once in a lifetime talent.

Someone who handles the pressure of being a great All Black, someone who never got too big for his boots and maintained high standards until the end.

Time will tell if he has any further involvement in professional rugby but few can argue his contribution to rugby as a player has been immense.

Another five-wicket bag from Josh Mann got Johnsonville’s noses in front of Onslow in their two-day Pearce Cup cricket match on Saturday.

Mann was the reason Onslow were dismissed for a below-par 65 on the first of two days at Barton Oval.

The seamer was able to get just enough movement to be a constant threat.

Johnsonville’s top-order also struggled and they were reduced to 55 for six at one point, they needed their tail to wag, which it did to claim the first innings points.

Johnsonville was eventually dismissed for 145.

Onslow attacked in their third innings to eradicate the 80-run deficit.

Onslow will continue on Saturday at 86 for two.

Johnsonville captain Raki Weerasundara says the pitch was

just doing a bit off the surface to make batsmen uncomfortable.

“If you were willing to hit the pitch hard then you were going to be rewarded,” he says.

“Josh is in great form and he deserves what he is getting.”

Weerasundara says they would have liked more of a lead but the pitch dictated that runs were at a premium.

“I actually think the way we bowled in the second innings late in the day was the thing that was

most disappointing.

“We were a bit loose and gave away too many runs but the position we are in going into day two, we absolutely would have taken at the start of play.

“If we can get some quick wickets early on day two, then we will be in a strong position.

T he 24 -yea r-old Christchurch-based athlete has been knocking on the door of capturing the mark for himself – which he had jointly held with Glenn Howard at 2.30m – throughout a highly promising season.

At both the Night of 5s meet in Auckland in December and Cooks Classic in Whanganui last month, he produced some tantalisingly close attempts at New Zealand record marks and tonight the ice-cool high jumping ace delivered in style.

Kerr had earlier flirted with danger, requiring a third attempt to negotiate 2.27m – a height he has successfully cleared at both the aforementioned meets – before raising the bar to 2.31m.

Kerr came agonisingly close with his first attempt at the record-breaking mark and after missing out with his second

effort he appeared to slightly readjust the length of his run up for his final attempt. It proved an inspired decision.

With all eyes firmly fixed on the Auckland-raised athlete inside a sun-drenched Newtown Park, he dramatically delivered to wriggle clear of the horizontal bar and bank the outright mark.

The bar was then advanced to the automatic Olympic qualification mark of 2.33m and, although the height was beyond him tonight, he made three highly respectable attempts to suggest this mark is well within his range in the not-too-distant future.

An elated Kerr, who bettered his own outdoor world lead of 2.27m (four men have jumped higher in the world during the 2021 indoor season) said of claiming the national record outright: “It felt awesome. I’m so stoked to get a PB, it is the greatest feeling in the world.”

On his excellent attempts at the Olympic qualification marks he added: “I kept third attempting it at 2.27m and 2.31m and I was just so tired by the time I jumped 2.33m.

Hamish Kerr snared the outright New Zealand men’s high jump record courtesy of a stunning world-leading outdoor leap of 2.31m at Wellington’s Capital Classic, over the weekend.

I’ll probably change for strategy next time (in order to get the 2.33m height).

“Now I’ve got the national record outright I’ll start the competition at a higher height.

I won’t muck about it and I’ll try to get up to it (the 2.33m height) earlier.”

Kerr, one of the hottest properties in New Zealand athletics, will next be in action this Saturday at the Sir Graeme Douglas International in Auckland.

Also impressing in the field was ultra-consistent hammer ace Lauren Bruce, who extended her streak to nine successive hammer competitions beyond the 70m distance with another quality display.

The Oceania record-holder has made a habit more re-

cently of producing her best late in the competition and once again found her rhythm in round six with her 71.66m dislodging Julia Ratcliffe as meet record-holder.

Connor Bell gave another healthy reminder of his current outstanding shape by three times hurling the 2kg discus beyond 60m.

Competing in chillier conditions at the back end of the meet, the 19-year-old Aucklander once again performed with sheer class to dominate the men’s discus with his best of the night (62.52m) coming with his penultimate effort.

National champion Alexander Parkinson tossed the discus out to a respectable 58.03m for second.

Otway earns national tennis honour

Samuel Marsden Collegiate tennis player Jade Otway has been named Tennis New Zealand’s junior player of the year for 2020.

The Year 13 student now has an ITF ranking of 184 in the world for players under 18-years-old.

Jade has had recent success in both singles and doubles over the past month.

She won the J4 ITF Tennis Tournament in

Wellington from January 19 to 23.

Jade went into the tournament seeded number 1.

She played Elyse Tse from Auckland in the final.

They played a three-set match which went for two hours and 45 minutes.

Jade won the first set, but lost the second.

She prevailed in the deciding set with the final score being 6-4, 5-7, 6-4.

Jade then played another J4 ITF tournament in Auckland where she claimed the doubles title.

Marsden Collegiate’s Jade Otway has been named Tennis NZ’s under-18 player of the year.
