Collective earns national honours Continued from page 1.

The support and enrichment of our local community is something that is extremely important to local real estate company Collective First National. Although a relatively new company, ‘Collective’ are not just based in the Northern suburbs – many of their agents have been helping local people with their housing needs for more than 30 years.

When they formed in early 2020, their direction was clear, to be a force for good in the area, channeling company profits into programmes and facilities that make our local community a better place to live. Something that Collective are extremely proud of.

The Collective Community Hub in Johnsonville opened to in May. Since it opened its doors, more than 7500 community members have made use of the state-ofthe-art space.

Even more impressive are the 650 events that have been able to use this community space free of charge.

Team YIP’s William YIP, who along with Gareth Robins, was integral in establishing the Hub says the response has been huge.

“From our very first day we

have always been community before commission and done everything we can to contribute towards the vibrancy of our community,” he says.

“We have always believed in supporting those that support us, so serving our community is a no-brainer.

“For our little local business to be recognised as the real estate company that has contributed the most to the community in the whole of New Zealand across all brands is definitely a special milestone.

William says the uptake has exceeded their expectations.

“Compared to other community centres, our usage has exceeded all user expectations.

“It is wonderful to help so many volunteer organisations focus on doing great work in the community and not worry about covering costs,” William says.

The Collective continue to look for new initiatives to help the community.

“We’re looking at ways locally owned businesses can work together and thrive in these challenging times.”

The Collective Community Hub has so far absorbed an investment in excess of $300,000 which has been fully funded by

Super Saturday draws younger crowd

The Super Saturday Vaccination Day struck a chord with young people according to Onslow Medical Centre practice manager, Tracey Wynne.

The Khandallah Presbyterian Church saw more than 480 people get a vaccine on Saturday as part of the nationwide push.

“We’ve saturated the area and the uptake of the vaccine has been very good but we saw a lot of success with younger people.

“The young ones are coming in and getting it done because they’ve been told they may not be able to go to music festivals over the summer,” she says.

“The prospect of freedom seems to be quite appealing.”

Tracey says while that number is lower than some of the weekends they’ve had, many of them were getting their first vaccine which was encouraging.

“We’ve had weekends where we have done 700-800 doses

but that was in the early days of the roll out.

Tracey says her practice is averaging 350 people per day, with many getting their second dose.

She says numbers for November seem to have dropped off as the vaccinated population increases.

“We’ve been very lucky with the Khandallah Church,” she says.

“They have the space to accommodate large numbers with social distancing in mind so they’ve been terrific.

“We need spaces like that because we are doing this for the community.”

Director General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield was at the Karori Mall vaccination centre on Saturday answering questions around the vaccine role out.

More than 130,000 doses were administered across New Zealand as part of the Super Saturday initiative.

Snapper on rail rolled out for Johnsonville Metlink has confirmed the launch date for Snapper on rail with the card payment rolling out on the Johnsonville line as part of a pilot that will inform the National Ticketing Solution in the future.

Familiar to hundreds and thousands of bus passengers across the region, Snapper will now be accepted on the Johnsonville line from 14 November.

General Manager for Metlink, Scott Gallacher says new Snapper card validator machines are being installed at stations on the Johnsonville line making it easy for

rail passengers to tag on and off.

“We’re trying to make this as easy as possible for passengers.

“As well as the new validators we’ll also have a team on the ground helping educate passengers and getting them familiar with the new system.”

“This pilot is an important step in Metlink’s transition to the National Ticketing Solution, it gives us an immediate idea of the design, implementation, maintenance and administration challenges of running electronic ticketing on rail while giving passengers a chance to adjust to

a new easier payment method,” says Scott Gallacher.

While there will not be any integrated transfers between rail and bus during the trial, passengers will be able to use Snapper on any bus replacements on the Johnsonville line during the pilot.

In early 2022 Metlink is looking to introduce a 30 day rail pass on Snapper (the same as is currently in place on bus), for passengers wishing to replace their monthly paper train tickets.

In the long term, Metlink believes the pilot will also provide further insight into customer

travel behaviour and demand, enabling the region’s public transport provider to design future fare deals and bundles. Metlink is currently planning for public consultation on new fare products and prices in 2022.

During the pilot phase, all current paper ticket products and cash sales, including on-board purchasing will remain available for passengers. Metlink has been working with communities and schools to build awareness of the pilot to ensure passengers, especially students, are prepared for the upcoming change.

Predator Free Khandallah doing their bit for larger goal

Predator Free Khandallah continue to work to improve the level of bird life in their area and connect with other predator free groups doing similar work around Wellington.

Every day, all over Khandallah and most of the rest of Wellington, neighbourhoods are doing their bit to create safe and nurturing environments for the huge influx of native birds we see in our gardens nowadays.

When Predator Free Khandallah was set up in 2016, Khandallah neighbours were starting to notice the increase in WnjƯ and kerernj.

Now only 5 years on, tnjƯ are in high numbers throughout Wellington, and they’ve been joined by bellbirds, kƗNƗ, kƗNƗULNi, kƗUearea, ruru, tauhou (wax-eyes), piwakawaka (and even black ones) and others, in Khandallah gardens and reserves. “Unfortunately though, these beautiful creatures are vulnerable to

network across the city.”

Predator Free Khandallah is part of a network of initiatives across Wellington working to grow biodiversity by actively reducing rats, mice, stoats and weasels across the city and region. Over 480 traps have gone out to Khandallah backyards since 2016 and over 4,700 rats, mice and mustelids have been reported as caught.

“One of the challenges for the group now is that there are many registered members of PFK that are not reporting catches – they are either not using their trap any more, or they are trapping but not telling us about what they catch” says Briony Ellis, from PFK, “that data is so important for the overall Wellington effort. Newlands College pupil Cyrus Dahl had a day filming advertisements encouraging disabled people to get vaccinated to protect themselves against Covid-19 at the Johnsonville Vaccination Centre.

Cyrus, who successfully fundraised for special swings at his local playground last year, will likely be shown on TV 3 in the coming weeks.

The advertisements are aimed at vaccine hesitancy and talking to New Zealand about why people were initially scared.

Cyrus is letting other young, Maori and disabled people know that it is ok to get vaccinated.

“I can’t run away from COVID, but now that I’m vaccinated COVID will run away from me,” Cyrus says.

Johnsonville Camera Club Community Grants? YIP! earns regional honours The Johnsonville Camera Club and the Hutt Camera Club placed equal first at the 2021 Wellington Region Annual Print Battle when judging took place at the Moera Hall last week.

Each year, the photographic clubs in Wellington compete in this event, where each club submits prints on ten prescribed topics.

This year the contest was extremely close, with only five points separating the top and bottom ranked clubs. Guest judge Bruce Girdwood praised the very high standard of entries for this year’s competition, saying that it was rare to see such a quality assemblage of fifty excellent prints.

Johnsonville’s Acting President Gen Innes says the club was delighted with the result, which was one step up from the 2020 competition, where Johnsonville placed second.

“I was especially delighted that we had two winners in the individual categories. Patrick

Flanagan’s image for “In the City” captured the judge’s fancy with its humour of a kissing couple in a pub framed against a sign saying “Lucky”. Rhonda Turner also won “The Great Outdoors” with a moody shot of a tramper alone in the hills which Judge Girdwood said perfectly captured the theme. Together with three second placings and two thirds, Johnsonville tied with Hutt with 28 points overall.

They were closely followed by Kapiti Camera Club and Kapiti Coast Photographic Society, both with 31 points. Wellington Photographic Society followed with 32 points.”

The Johnsonville Camera Club meets monthly on the last Wednesday of each month bar December at The Collective Hub, 33 Johnsonville Road from 7 to 9pm.

3. Welfare of homeless & injured animals – Inspired by the amazing work Emjay & Sam do in the community, we added this 3rd pillar to help provide support and services to those animals

who have no one to look after them. We’ve supported many initiations such as animal rescue, rehabilitation, evacuation, and sadly sometimes… we have been there to provide a dignified farewell as well.

Although we are always busy running around helping people buy, sell and renovate houses, this is our passion and our ‘why’ for working as hard as we do. Not only do we want to revolutionise the way Real Estate is done, we want to ensure that we continue to put people before profits and actually do the right thing.

Wellington UniVentures recognised that Dr Natali’s research could have global impact to reduce carbon emissions and nominated him for the program.

Breakthrough Energy Fellows is the latest program announced by Breakthrough Energy, an organisation founded by Bill Gates, that is dedicated to supporting the development and adoption of new clean technologies that can help the world achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. The program will provide innovators from across the globe with funding, mentorship, education, and access to the Breakthrough Energy network. Through this, the program aims to fill a critical gap in the innovation ecosystem by providing essential resources to traditionally under-resourced innovators in the nascent stages of commercialising clean technologies.

Dr Natali and his work with Liquium to decarbonise ammonia was selected through an international competitive application process and demonstrated how the technology has the ability to reduce 500 million tons of carbon dioxide per year at scale. Dr Natali is the only New Zealander in the cohort this year.

Ammonia production is one of the single

largest chemical industrial processes on earth; globally, ammonia-based fertilisers are responsible for 50% of the world’s food production. Beyond its use as a fertiliser, ammonia is a key component in the manufacture of many everyday products. But the way ammonia is currently produced—using the Haber-Bosch process, which has remained unchanged since the early 1900s—is incredibly energy-intensive, producing 2-3% of global carbon emissions.

“Ammonia doesn’t contain any carbon as part of its chemical makeup; however, the hydrogen feedstock used in the production process is typically sourced from natural gas or coal. Producing ammonia using green hydrogen and under the exceedingly mild conditions we discovered has the potential to reduce emissions significantly,” explained Dr Natali.

Wellington UniVentures put Dr Natali forward for the Breakthrough Energy Fellows, understanding how his research could have real global impact, enabling the green export of hydrogen and a new clean ammonia liquid fuel for heavy industry.

Dr Franck Natali, Associate Professor at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington and Wellington UniVentures’ Innovatorin-Residence, has been accepted on to the inaugural Breakthrough Energy Fellows Program.

New Huntleigh Apartment village coordinator embraces opportunity Desrae Martin got to know Enliven’s Huntleigh Home during her time working there as a health care assistant.

Unfortunately, a wrist injury meant she could no longer do that job, however, when she had fully recovered, Desrae was offered the position as the village coordinator of the neighbouring Huntleigh Retirement Apartments.

Huntleigh Home and Apartments manager Anna Roberts says she knew Desrae would put her heart and soul into the role.

“When Desrae was working here as a health care assistant, I observed her genuine care and compassion towards the residents. She is a quiet, humble worker who can get things done in the most professional and respectful manner. When she expressed her interest in the village coordinator role, I had no doubt that she would be the perfect person for this position.”

“It’s important for me to have variety,” says Desrae. “And I love making people feel good.”

The role gives her the chance to do that and more. She is responsible for coordinating the day-to-day activities, from meals for residents wanting to eat in the dining room, to managing maintenance of the apartments inside and out and helping people move into their new homes and get set up.

“I’m pretty practical. Dad was an engineer and he taught me a few things, so I understand how a switchboard works for instance,” Desrae says.

Rifleman gets Wellington nod for Bird of the Year Wellington is supporting the titipounamu (rifleman) in this year’s Bird of the Year competition.

Forest & Bird’s Bird of the Year competition started in 2005 to showcase the plight of New Zealand’s native birds and is now the tweet of the town every year.

In this hotly contested event, Wellington City Council is joining forces with Zealandia to support the smallest but mightiest bird of the bunch – the titipounamu.

Not only have the titipounamu been spotted for the first time in the wild in Wellington in over 100 years, but they are also building nests and have just become proud parents outside the safety of Zealandia’s fence.

Mayor Andy Foster says having our smallest bird nesting outside Zealandia’s protective fence is another illustration of Wellington’s remarkable and ongoing environmental restoration journey.

“Every day we see evidence of recovering native birdlife. That’s the result of large-scale acquisition and protection of land, active and natural rejuvenation, and extensive predator control.

“It’s the result of thirty years of work by Council and tens of thousands of Wellingtonians. These special little proud parents are another tribute to this great on-going teamwork.

“We have already seen massive increases

in tui, NƗNƗ Nerernj and kƗNƗUiki in the Capital, and now we have the titipounamu making its presence felt – so let’s make them top of the pecking order this year!”

Council’s Biosecurity Specialist, Henk Louw agrees the sighting of titipounamu is a team effort and this is a great reward for all that mahi.

“Volunteers are protecting Wellington’s native manu by trapping predators like rats in Council reserves and their own backyards. Two rats have been trapped near the titipounamu nesting site since we have been monitoring it. Furthermore, ongoing restoration efforts through community planting is providing suitable forest habitat for titipounamu to enjoy.

“The best protection for native wildlife is trapping pests and planting native trees especially in backyards. This will reduce large gaps in tree cover and create corridors for these birds to move throughout the city.

It’s also important to manage your pets to minimise any risk to native wildlife.”

Titipounamu were introduced to Wellington ecosanctuary, Zealandia Te MƗUD a TƗne, from Wainuiomata Mainland Island in 2019. Breeding has been successful inside the safety of the predator-free sanctuary and until now there has been no successful breeding outside the fence in Wellington City.

On-demand public transport for Tawa welcomed Tawa Community Board Chair Robyn Parkinson and local Ward Councillor Jill Day have both applauded Metlink’s announcement of a new on-demand public transport trial in the Tawa area.

Ms Parkinson says the Community Board has been in discussions with Metlink and Greater Wellington Regional Council over the past year in a bid to introduce public transport to the eastern and western edges of Tawa – and the on-demand trial “is a really good start”.

She says large areas of Tawa are not currently served by bus routes for a range of reasons including

street layouts which make it difficult to establish economically-viable routes. “We obviously have an excellent commuter rail service that runs through the centre of town – but it’s a long walk to up the western and eastern hills of Tawa.

Grenada North at present lacks any public transport.

Ms Parkinson says the trial, which starts early next year, will give people an alternative to walking or driving. “Obviously it’s in all of our interests to reduce the need for people to commute by car.”

Cr Day, who represents the Takapnj/Northern Ward, congrat-

ulated the Regional Council for launching the initiative. “Now it’s up to local people to support this new service – I certainly want it to be successful. I also thank Robyn and the Community Board for their mahi in helping to get the trial up and running.”

Newly minted Johnsonville and Wellington Firebirds quick bowler Nathan Smith is eager to improve his stocks in a new environment.

The 23-year-old has played five seasons and more than 80 games for Otago before making the move north for this season.

He has linked up with Johnsonville thanks to a friendship with premier captain Raki Weerasundara and spinner Jeremy Benton.

While he has yet to train officially with Johnsonville he was excited to link with the team in the coming weeks.

“I wanted to go to a club that did not have any current Wellington players but that had a good core of young players that are up-and-coming,” he says.

Smith says he is excited by the prospects of being in Wellington even if it meant bowling into the breeze at the Basin Reserve all summer.

“That wind is going to be quite something,” he says.

“Playing in it while wearing three jumpers should be fun.”

He says pushing his claims for higher honours was important but he wanted a new environment and the chance to push himself beyond his comfort zone.

“I’m very grateful to Otago for giving me the opportunity but this preseason has been different and challenging for me and I think that’s a good thing.

“It’s what I need to progress my game.”

Nathan says focussing on his process and ensuring he bowled accurately and consistently would lead him to achieve his selection goals.

“I may not be bowling 140kph but I have to trust what I bring and believe that I can produce strong performances.”

Now that we are halfway through Spring and quickly heading towards the first month of summer there is a fair bit to do in our gardens so let’s run a check list in case some things are missed.

Roses: Generally at this time we have new foliage, buds and some flowering taking place.

If there is any sign of black spot or rust, spray the roses and soil underneath with a solution of potassium permanganate mixed at ¼ a teaspoon to a litre of non-chlorinated water and spray. Repeat weekly till new foliage is clean.

Food for Rroses: Ideal is horse manure, and blood and bone, otherwise sheep manure pellets with the blood and bone. These should be covered with some compost.Add to this a sprinkling of Fruit and Flower Power once a month.

If you want good roses avoid soil damaging fertilisers such as rose fertiliser and nitrophoska.

Bio Boost is also a good natural slow release one and very well priced.

Only use with non chlorinated water so you don’t harm the beneficial soil life including the gardeners best friend, earthworms.

In some cases the health improvement of your roses will be quickly noticed, although some may have the additional problem of inherently poor breeding and always be a sickly specimen.

Lawns: I have had a number of inquiries about lawn problems starting with moss in lawns.

Dont waste your money on sulphate of iron as it only burns the top of the moss which then it quickly comes back.

Instead, jet spray the moss with Wallys Moss and Liverwort Control. It kills the moss completely without damaging the grasses.

If there is a spongy feeling when walking on the lawn that indicates a thatch problem. Simply spray the lawn with Thatch Busta to clean up the thatch. Do the moss killing first, wait about two weeks then the Thatch Busta.

Bare patches in the lawn indicate the root damage caused by grass grubs in the autumn/winter period and these same grubs are now down deep, pupating to emerge shortly as beetles.

They are too deep to do anything about them at this time so don’t waste

your money on treating. The horse has gone so no need to close the gate.

Another bare patch problem with holes in the lawn indicate that porina caterpillars are at work eating at the base of the grass in the evening (while they are safe from birds) to return to their tunnels before dawn.

A simple spray over the lawn with Wallys Neem Tree Oil will stop the damage and cause them to starve to death. In areas where porina are a problem treat the lawn this way every three months.

When the grass grub beetles emerge they are going to eat the foliage of several plants so after you have noticed holes in the leaves go out after dark with a torch and have a look.

If you have beetles then spray then with a mix of Wallys Super Pyrethrum and Wallys Neem Tree Oil. Repeat nightly.

Weeds: They certainly grow at this time of the year and as long as you deal to them before they set seed they are not too much of a problem.

In fact weeds are a excellent asset to your garden soils as they have taken up goodness which can be returned to great advantage.

You could pull the weeds out, shake the soil off them and lay them back down on the soil.

That is good but even better, with a sharp knife slice through the weeds just below soil surface.

This leaves the roots in the soil to rot and provide food for the soil life and it does not disrupt the beneficial fungi in the soil.

The foliage can be laid on the soil surface where it will be quickly devoured by the soil life and worms.

Your soil will build up humus quickly if you spray the dying weeds with Mycorrcin.

Citrus: It’s a good time to sprinkle Wallys Neem tree powder underneath the citrus trees from the trunk to the drip line. This will help prevent insect damage.

If you have chook manure give a good sprinkling of that otherwise any animal manure or sheep manure pellets along with blood and bone. Cover with compost.

A spray of Wallys Liquid Copper with Raingard added in the spring and autumn will help with any citrus diseases. If the trees are looking a bit sad add Perkfection Supa to the copper spray.

In cases where wet feet have rotted roots treat the area with Terracin to suppress the pathogens and help save the tree.

Three weeks later drench the soil with Mycorrcin.

Note: Always use non-chlorinated water which is easily achieved with a special carbon bonded filter on your outside tap.

Fleming for the future?

The return of Stephen Fleming to the Black Caps setup 13 years after he retired as a player could be a look into the future.

Fleming will be part of the coaching group for the twenty20 World Cup. Fresh from becoming the Indian Premier League’s most successful coach after leading his Chennai Super Kings to their fourth title, Fleming looks to be the perfect

foil to help his old team go deep in the format’s World Cup in subcontinent conditions.

As a player, Fleming was widely respected as one of the best captains in the game and his mindset seems to have served him well as a coach.

It would surprise no one to one day see the 48-year-old become the New Zealand coach.

If success in T20 cricket is con-

sidered enough to stake a claim, then Fleming has an irresistible resumé.

Coaching in the IPL and in T20 franchise cricket will be far more financially lucrative than coaching the Black Caps ever will be.

Fleming, who claims he had some time before his MIQ spot was available to return home, was only too happy to help out but it will be up to him in the long term

whether he sees a future doing the role of coaching his old team.

The former top-order batsman is still considered young by coaching standards and the current crop of New Zealand players has far more talent than any national team he captained in the 1990s or 2000s.

Perhaps the prospect of coaching genuinely world class players for his home country could prove

a tantalizing prospect with time.

If New Zealand Cricket are smart, they will already be plotting a plan for after this Gary Stead/Kane Williamson era.

Fleming is well versed in handling the media, is calm and articulate under the scrutiny of journalists and fans alike.

They could do far worse than having Fleming’s name in the mix for when the time comes.

Scott plays on for more premier success

Johnsonville premier wicket keeper Scott Mudgway with daughter Lily will enter his 18th season at the top level of club cricket eager for further success.

Johnsonville premier wicket keeper, Scott Mudgway is set for his 18th season in the top grade and just as hungry as ever.

The 34-year-old admits his fingers are banged up, the knees get a bit sore but the love of his club and the game remains.

“The body is feeling it more and more but I enjoy the keeping and I think I’d get bored if I was out in the field,” he says.

“I enjoy playing, I enjoy winning and I’m really competitive.

“I also enjoy seeing the young guys coming through.

“I’ve just had my second child but my wife still encourages me to get out there which I appreciate.”

Scott played his junior cricket for Johnsonville and then from

2000-2004 he attended Wellington College being captain of the 1st X1 in 2004.

In 2005, he returned to Johnsonville and is fast approaching 300 premier appearances.

Scott says Johnsonville’s first two-day Pearce Cup triumph last season was a highlight.

“After the disappointment of losing the one-day final, we decided to get stuck-in and we all believed we could win.

“It was a dream of mine to win it but there were always doubts whether we could do it.

“It all clicked the last three months of the season.”

Scott says retirement did cross his mind after the final but the thrill of trying to defend it this season and trying to win the oneday final was enticing enough for him to return.

“I get more satisfaction out of seeing the young guys go well because I know they have 10 to 15 years ahead of them and many of them want to be professional cricketers so if I can play my part then that’s ideal.

Scott has served as the captain of the Premier Men’s team and has also served on the Club’s Management Committee along with Mum Gail who was club Treasurer and of course father Rick who is still heavily involved.

“The club has given me a lot and it’s important to see it going well into the future.”

Scott says he knows other teams will be looking to try to knock them off this year as they try to defend the Pearce Cup. The premier season will start with twenty20 fixtures next weekend.

Sahana Sambhus, Phoebe Kemp and Kate Schmid all reached the semifinals of the main draw, with ten-year old Sahana reaching the 2021 final. Sahana won the Year Six and Under Title, with a hardfought win over her Waikanae opponent. Sahana said “I was a bit nervous at the start but tried my best. It was exciting and I was really happy after I won.”

Sophie Hoar, Kumin Shin, Alexandra, Zara Mellsop and Lucy Willson all competed in the consolation rounds with Zara beating Lucy in the final.

“It was very heartwarming to hear of the girls supporting and cheering each other on during a long day of tennis. They showed great pride in their school and exhibited our school values to a high standard”, said Principal Kate Christie.

It was a fantastic day of tennis for the eight girls.

The Cashmere Avenue School tennis team had plenty of success at the Wellington Primary and Intermediate Schools Tennis Tournament.
