“For the poster competition which I was initially only going to compete in, that took me about a month but the video title card competition I had two days.

SGCNZ chief executive Dawn Sanders wanted Unna to do calligraphy signs for the festival itself at the Michael Fowler Centre.

Shakespeare Globe Centre New Zealand is a life skills enhancing organisation using Shakespeare as a tool.

It works with primary, secondary and tertiary students, actors, directors, teachers, the corporate sector and devotees of Shakespeare.

SGCNZ was founded in 1991 as a result of New Zealand’s Globe Hangings project which involved 500 embroiderers and textile artists nationwide, from eight to 80 years old, to create a gift of four hangings for Shakespeare’s Globe, London.

Unna says she is excited to know her work is going to be on display in London.

Unna says while she did not know much about Shakespeare’s play when she finished third in the poster competition at her first try last year, she wanted to give it a go anyway.

“I thought it would be an experience and when I got third that gave me more

Wooden Cross Project for Karori Cemetery

The Friends of Karori Cemetery are embarking on their first fundraising and restoration project.

The large Totara cross found at Karori Cemetery is the Cemetery’s oldest landmark.

It was originally placed at the top of the rise at the centre of the Cemetery in 1892 and had stood for over 120 years.

It would have once been visible to everyone who visited the Cemetery.

The Friends of Karori Cemetery are seeking contributions to have the Cross conserved and restored to its original position.

The cross is around 3 metres in height and made from Totara, which is a very long-lasting wood. The base supports have however rotted at ground level, where the moisture level in the timber is constantly changing. The timber above ground level is still very sound.

The location of the cross at Karori Cemetery is significant – it stood adjacent to the graves of the Marist priests buried at Karori from 1892 onwards, in a commanding position at the top of the rise. It would have been visible to everyone attending funerals in the earliest Public, Anglican and Jewish areas, as well of course to those nearby in the Catholic section. It became obscured

during the latter part of the 20th century when the surrounding trees and shrubbery grew taller.

The cross remained standing for more than 100 years, until sometime during the last decade the inevitable rot became too severe, Vice Chair of the Friends of Karori Cemetery, Barbara Mulligan says they are hoping to Fundraise between $3000 to $3500 for the restoration.

“For many decades it would have dominated the landscape “Because (the cross) fell only five years ago, it is still in good condition, it is really only at the bottom where it has suffered some rot, it is retrievable.

“The project is manageable (from a cost standpoint).

“We are a new group which has been around for 15 months so we feel we are starting with something appropriate both is scale and values.

The Wellington City Council is actively supporting the project with the hope some trees can be removed once the project is underway to allow a line of sight to the cross.

Barbara says she hoped the cross could be a visible part of the cemetery within 12 months.

Transmission Gully feedback sought Waka Kotahi is seeking public feedback on speed limit proposals for State Highway 1 (SH1) and the surrounding road network, ahead of the Transmission Gully motorway opening.

When Transmission Gully opens it will become part of SH1, to reflect its function as the main route in and out of Wellington. The current section of SH1 between Linden and Mackays Crossing will be renumbered State Highway 59 (SH59).

Johnsonville to get new firefighter Newly minted firefighter Sam Sinclair couldn’t be happier to be in Johnsonville.

Sam was among 26 new recruits who graduated as firefighters last week at Fire and Emergency’s National Training Centre in Rotorua.

The new firefighters demonstrated the skills they have learned over their 12 weeks of training to their family and friends, with a range of firefighting scenario exercises.

The recruits were then presented with

their yellow operational helmets to take back to the fire station - ready to use their new skills to help keep their communities safe.

Seven of the new recruits will serve the Wellington region.

The 28-year-old is more than happy to be back in New Zealand serving his community after travelling and working in Asia and New Zealand as a tour guide.

“COVID-19 gave me the perfect excuse to try something new and meaningful,”

he says.

“I’ve always wanted a job where I can give back to the community, and being a firefighter seemed like the perfect fit.

Not just responding to emergencies, but also engaging with the community and teaching them how to be safe with fire.”

Sam will be based at Johnsonville Fire Station and encourages anyone thinking of becoming a career firefighter to go for it.

“You’d be stupid not to,” he says.

The Johnsonville Volunteer Fire Brigade will have a new recruit in the coming weeks when Sam Sinclair comes onboard.

Sarah says many of the toys suit children aged one to five and is a great way to give kids a taste of a toy without the financial burden.

“We focus on good quality toys that are more expensive and are possibly things you don’t want to spend the money on.

“Like we have a mini roller coaster and a police car themed bubble car.

“It gives families and kids a chance to experience toys they otherwise wouldn’t.

“We’re also really proud of the sustainability aspect of it because the toy library allow kids to play with toys and then give them back for others to enjoy.

“I know with my daughter who is two-and-a-half, her preferences can change over three months so

what was the cool, fun toy last week can then spend a long time in storage or cluttering up your house,” Sarah says.

Sarah says the toy library can be used to see what toys kids really fall in love with.

“My mother-in-law told me that when my husband was younger she would hire out a block set and after a while she decided that he loved it so much it was worth buying.

“We also had several bikes out close to Christmas last year so families could decide what bike was the best to buy.”

Sarah says it is a great resource for the community that just needs more people to use it.

People are encouraged to bring their favourite bear or soft toy and come along for a fun community event.

There will be picnic kai and tea/ coffee for a koha/donation, as well as entertainment for your tamariki.

Sustainable transport gets a push Greater Wellington joined community members and government representatives from all walks of life at the third biennial Living Streets Aotearoa Walking Summit last week to discuss how to achieve more liveable, walkable, climateresilient environments.

Greater Wellington was a major sponsor of this year’s Summit, and Transport Committee Chair Roger Blakeley set out Greater Wellington’s ambitious targets for mode shift, and the steps the council is taking to reach them.

“Getting people out of cars is one of Greater Wellington’s major strategic priorities. We set a bold target of 40% increase in regional mode share to public transport and active travel modes, like walking and cycling, by 2030. That will contribute to a 35% reduction in transport-generated carbon

emissions within a decade,” Cr Blakeley says.

With public transport and active travel accounting for half of all trips into central Wellington, the highest figure in the country, there is already strong appetite for mode shift among the region’s commuters.

“We have a suite of free educational programmes to encourage people to adopt low-carbon travel modes. Movin’March challenges tamariki and their whānau to get walking or wheeling to school.

Pedal Ready offers free cycle skills training to get people of all ages confident on bikes. Our Workplace Travel programme identifies and helps remove barriers to active travel for people and workplaces,” says Cr Blakeley.

Greg’s electric experience in the air Ohariu MP Greg O’Connor got a taste of electric innovation from a great height last week.

The hot-button topic at the Mystery Creek Field Days then saw Greg take an opportunity to get airborne that he could not refuse.

“Hot on the heels of looking at advances in electric trucks at Fieldays, I then had a unique opportunity to represent Ohariu at a demonstration for New Zealand’s first Electric aircraft with ElectricAir. “Even more exciting, was the opportunity to take a flight around Kapiti in the plane, the first observation was just how silent it was.

“While the technology is still relatively new, thus limiting the distance they can fly, clearly technological advances will see short-haul flights around the city in the not too distant future.”

Colleges debate the future of NCEA Increased Covid 19 restrictions to Level 2 fortunately did not prevent the eleventh annual debate between Newlands and Onslow Colleges from being held.

Organised by the Johnsonville Lions Club the debate was held last week at Newlands College.

The topic being “that NCEA Level One should be abandoned”. Newlands College as hosts took the affirmative side of the debate.

After careful deliberation guest adjudicators local MP Greg O’Connor, with Brook Kinajil-Moran and Andre Castaing of the Wellington Speaking Union, determined that Onslow had won narrowly.

The adjudicators agreed that the debating standard was strong, with clear thinking and positive arguments from both teams.

Newlands College debaters put forward interesting arguments for an alternative less stressful system of student assessment.

However Onslow’s winning approach was to clearly outline benefits of the current NCEA assessment, particularly for less well-off students.

The Lions Intercollege debate provides an opportunity for members of the local colleges’ debating teams to debate in front of a public audience.

A small audience enjoyed well-reasoned arguments, and heard differing reasons to support both side of the proposal.

Student self-confidence, public speaking skills and ability to think clearly are improved through this local Lions Club project. “We value the support of both local colleges for this Lions Club

initiative” said Lions Club President Angela Ambler “Our community will benefit in the long term as these students will utilise in the future the reasoning skills learned through this activity.”

Next year’s debate will be held at Onslow College with Onslow College taking the affirmative side.

The Johnsonville Lions Club has 22 members and meets on the first and third Monday of each month at 6pm. at the Johnsonville Club in Norman Lane.

Public Place Recycling trial ends, stations to be removed

Newlands robbery suspect sought Wellington Police want the public’s help to identify the man responsible for a robbery in Newlands on Tuesday May 18.

Detective Sergeant Andrew Compton says the man entered the BP service station on Newlands Road about 8pm and threatened the sole staff member with a knife and demanded money.

The staff member was able to safely relocate to an office area and was not physically injured

during the incident.

The suspect left the premises and ran across Newlands Road and got into a car parked on Wakely Road.

“We want to speak to anybody who can help us identify the person captured on the store’s CCTV footage,” he says.

Wellington City Council will remove nine public recycling stations around the city in mid-July, following the completion of its Public Place Recycling (PPR) trial.

The PPR trial aimed to help the Council understand people’s attitudes, awareness and actions towards public recycling.

Initially it was hoped the stations would become permanent, but Waste Operations Manager Emily Taylor-Hall says that during the trial it became clear they weren’t making a significant contribution to minimising the city’s waste.

“Things have moved on since the trial began, and we now know that recycling alone won’t help us meet our goal of Wellington becoming a Zero Carbon Capital. We need to shift our focus to creating and consuming less waste in the first place.

“As Wellingtonians, we all have a responsibility to make smart choices about what we consume.

Other reasons behind the decision to remove the stations were the small volumes of recycling diverted from the landfill, and the cost of servicing the recycling stations.

“The public recycling stations kept around 36 tonnes of recycling out of the landfill each year. While this sounds a lot, it’s a small drop in the ocean compared to kerbside collections that divert around 11,200 tonnes per year.

“We’re paying over $6,500 per tonne of recycling from the public recycling stations, which is around ten times the cost per tonne for collecting kerbside recycling.

“We think future funding is better focussed on waste reduction initiatives such as those that introduce more reusable options and reduce single use packaging.”

Council recycling communication is getting through, with contamination dropping from almost 50% to 7% for co-mingle items during the trial, and glass contamination was low for all audits ranging from 0-7%. But an audit of rubbish bins

still contained an average of 45% recyclables.

The trial, launched in 2018, was a joint initiative with the Love NZ/Be a Tidy Kiwi campaign delivered by the Packaging Forum. It was funded with $465K of Waste Levy money from the Ministry of the Environment at no cost to ratepayers.

Stations were installed at Cuba Mall, Kelburn Park, Lambton Quay, Courtenay Place, Oriental Parade, Midland Park, the bus transfer station, and the Cenotaph.

An additional station was installed at Evans Bay Parade campervan site to service campsite users.

The bins are being returned to The Packaging Forum to be used elsewhere.

Council votes to make Thorndon Quay safer for cyclists Wellington City Council’s Pūroro Āmua Planning and Environment Committee voted to replace angle car parking with parallel car parking along Thorndon Quay.

These measures aim to increase safety for cyclists along this busy gateway to the city. Chair of the Pūroro Āmua Planning and Environment Committee, Councillor Iona Pannett says that this change has been a long time coming for Wellington City Council.

“Thorndon Quay has been unsafe for cyclists and active pedestrians for a number of years.

“We cannot sit comfortably with the number of serious injuries to cyclists reported and unreported.

This change aligns with our goals of encouraging active modes, such as cycling and is supported by Waka Kotahi, the New Zealand Transport Agency.”

A Wellington City Council report on parking occupancy, based on data from parking sensors, showed that even during peak times, the number of car parks outweighed the demand.

Modelling shows that with a reduced number of car parks, demand will continue to be met however, visitors that travel by car may have to walk a little further to their destination.

“The Council acknowledges the concerns of businesses about the removal of the parking and is committed to working with them to build on the enormous strengths of this area,” says Councillor Pannett.

“There has been a lot of investment from this sector and we believe as the city grows that there will be more opportunities to develop the area.”

Deputy Chair of the Pūroro Āmua Planning and Environment Committee, Councillor Tamatha Paul says that this is a monumental change for Wellington City Council.

“We have ambitious targets to meet to reduce carbon emissions and create a car-free CBD. To achieve this, we need to make courageous decisions that may be unpopular, such as reducing car parking. We believe that we can make these decisions and continue to support business’ needs.”

The changes to parking along Thorndon Quay were consulted on as part of Let’s Get Wellington Moving’s Thorndon Quay and Hutt Road project. The proposed changes will increase reliability and safety for all users, and improve walking and cycling facilities and public transport. Converting angle parking to parallel parking will be the first physical change, with construction on the wider project due to begin in

late 2022.

Mayor Andy Foster says it is very important that Let’s Get Wellington Moving is actually moving.

“The Thorndon Quay decisions are an early part of this. They enhance safety and encourage ongoing mode share. We are listening to businesses so that we can respond to their concerns in a process of

working together to build a safer environment for all transport users.

Let’s Get Wellington Moving will be transformational for the City.

“Let’s Get Wellington Moving aims to move more people in fewer vehicles and to do this we need to provide safe alternatives. You only need to stand on Thorndon Quay during peak travel times to see the

number of near misses that could have caused serious injuries.”

Changes to parking will be implemented in late 2021.

Later this year Let’s Get Wellington Moving will confirm the preferred option for construction.

Public engagement on detailed design will begin in late 2021 with construction starting in 2022.

Although she has never trained as a florist, Jane Warman’s talent with flowers has bloomed in her three years living at Karori’s Huntleigh Home.

The community of staff, residents, their families and volunteers make sure Jane has plenty to work with by bringing her fresh flowers from their gardens. Jane says home grown astromelias and scented lilies are among her favourites. She also likes the smell of fresh pine and adds it for greenery.

Jane’s arrangements grace the Enliven home’s tables and waiting areas and she also gives bunches to residents and their families in times of bereavement.

With a background in midwifery, bereavement counselling, hospice work and as an interfaith minister, Jane’s experience in comforting people during sadness or joy is vast.

Although Jane is very modest about her talents, she’s adamant that the gift of flowers can express emotions.

“I don’t pretend to know the language of flowers, I feel it.

Springbok tour comes to life on Twitter for anniversary The 1981 South African Springbok rugby tour of New Zealand divided a nation – 40 years on, we’re revisiting this historic event with a modern twist.

Paul Veart, Wellington City Libraries’ Customer Specialist, says they want to reflect the tour honestly, openly and without bias.

“This year marks the fortieth anniversary of the Springbok’s 1981 tour of New Zealand. Anniversaries are useful,

but they have a side-effect: they tend to make things tidy. And it doesn’t take much research - or thinking back - to realise the Springbok Tour was a lot of things, but tidy wasn’t one of them!

“So how do you address this messiness four decades later? One way is with historic live tweeting. The secret to historic live tweeting is simple: you tweet past events as if they were happening in the present. You tweet personal stories; you tweet contradicting news reports; you tweet as if you don’t know what the outcome is going to be.

As I am writing this, I had my sleep cut short by the downpour of hail on Tuesday.

Although it was an unwanted, early, wake up call, it was quite stunning to see the neighbourhood all blanked in white. Nature has a wonderful ability to impress, mesmerise and captivate our interest – but also cause a lot of destruction! Following the downpour, we went and checked out all the properties for sale, sold, coming to market to see how each property fared in the storm.

• Consulting a local building inspector, he shared some words of wisdom, that ‘all houses leak,’ even new houses, it is just a matter of when and if the maintenance was done properly. Contrary to popular belief, leaks do not come gushing through the cladding, rather at where different materials ‘join’ together, these are commonly windows, doors, roofs, penetration junctions, gutters, etc. So here are a few tips to check if your property has survived the storm!

• Hail Damage – Hailstorms cause damage is two parts, one is the sheer size / weight of the hail causing impact damage and weighing down gutters. The second part is when all this collected hail melts, creating overflow / flooding in areas. So make sure you check that the gutters haven’t sagged and well clear of any debris and blockages. Do the same for any drains you may have too. It may be a little late by the time you read this, but move all built up ice/hail well away from the property.

• Leaks – This is one you need to be a lot more proactive about, by the time you see the leak inside, it can be a little late. Pop up on to your roof and look for wet patches / staining. If you have fibre-based insulation, chances are you can even spot sagging and dampness where water has been sitting. Other signs to look for inside, are bulged skirting, gib, ceiling tiles, window framing and staining on the ceiling.

• Remediation – if you were unlucky and

had some leaks due to the extreme weather, the first step is to minimise where it is coming from, waterproofing tape is a great start (if you don’t have any handy, duct tape can suffice for now). Following that, drying out the house is a priority. Easiest way is to heat up the property as close to 30 degrees as you can, this can draw out moisture from the materials – while this is happening have a process to dehumidify the moisture. A dry home is a healthy home!

In our community, we do have extreme wind and weather, so don’t be alarmed if you find a leak, it doesn’t mean your house is a leaky home, but it does mean you may have neglected some key maintenance tasks for your property.

Most commonly, these are things like painting/ sealing the property, clearing gutters, removing lichen/moss from exterior materials etc.

• If in doubt, always keep professional advice.

We get a building report on our own property every 1-2 years, just like getting a WoF on a car.

Your house is worth a lot more, so it is definitely important to look after the health of it.

gardening this week Seed sowing time : By Wally Richards

July is the month to begin sowing seeds in trays or punnets to grow on for planting out later on.

Start with the more hardy types this month and then the more tender ones later in August.

The cost of transport and fertilisers that nurseries now have to pay to grow then to get their products to garden centres will mean that these costs will be passed onto you, when you buy seedlings in punnets this coming spring.

It is simple logic; if you have to pay several dollars for half a dozen lettuces in a punnet and it costs you less than that for a packet of lettuce seeds, which should give you over a hundred lettuce plants, which is better value?

All you need to do is learn how to germinate seeds successfully and grow them onto the stage where you can plant them out into your gardens. Which is very easy once you get the knack.

You can even go a stage further and allow one of each of a crop to mature and go to seed and harvest your own seed at no cost for future plantings.

If you do this year after year you will develop a strain of plants that are perfectly suited to your growing conditions.

All you have to do is let the best looking plant of a crop go to seed.

Never let an inferior looking plant go to seed for this purpose as you will be collecting inferior seed.

For the best success in germinating and growing on, you should consider buying a heat pad and making a cold frame.

A cold frame can be made out of plastic or glass and the most simple one would be an old drawer that is about 15cm deep or deeper and one or more sheets of glass to cover the drawer area.

This should be located outside in a sunny area (for winter) sitting on some bricks or similar so it is not in contact with wet ground.

Using a heat pad to warm the seedling trays into which you have sown your seeds means that you will germinate much quicker and get a better strike of more seeds than you would without one.

The best medium for placing in the punnet is a good friable potting mix or compost.

Seed raising mixes are more expensive and generally speaking are not as good as a potting mix for best results.

I actually use Daltons Compost for seed raising by passing it through a sieve to obtain the finer particles.

The amount of seeds you sow should be a bit more than the number of plants you require and the seeds should be spaced nicely apart as best able.

Next make up a solution of Magic Botanic Liquid (MBL) in non chlorinated water at 20 mls per litre into a trigger type sprayer and

mist the exposed seeds to make the whole area nice and moist.

Then lightly sieve a little more mix over the seeds to partly cover and mist again.

Most seeds like a little light to germinate so they do not need to be completely covered. The MBL assists greatly in rapid germination and gives the seedlings a great start.

Last season I had one gardener tell me that by using MBL on the pumpkin seeds he was germinating, it took only just over a week for the plants to be ready for planting out, normally it would be 2-3 weeks.

It is very important that the mix and seeds are kept moist and you must remember to mist regularly when using a heat pad.

Where the pad and punnets are placed is not important but should be somewhere that you are going to be... a few times a day such as in the kitchen. (so you don’t forget to mist regularly) Once you see a strike, with a number of the seedlings pushing up, with their first embryo leaves, you need to move the punnet to your cold frame because the germinated seedlings need overhead natural light.

This is the time that some gardeners make the mistake of not placing the freshly germinated seedlings into proper light.

When the natural light is coming

sideways such as through a window then the baby seedlings will stretch and grow towards the light.

The stems stretch making them weak and prone to the disease which we call dampening off.

Once out into the cold frame or on a bench in a glasshouse the watering requirements will lessen greatly and likely a daily misting will be all that is required as there is now no under heat to dry the growing medium.

Seedlings are grown on till they reach a suitable size to handle and transplant (Pricking out) into either small individual pots or into a larger seedling tray, nicely spaced apart individually to grow on.

In most cases about 6 seedlings to a punnet or even better one per cell in a cell tray.

Before you prick out, spray the

young plants with Vaporgard and leave them for a day.

Then you plunge the punnet into a bucket of non chlorinated water till it stops bubbling.

With the mix being really saturated means it is easier to prick out each plant with minimal root damage.

Grow your seedlings in their new containers till they are of a suitable size to plant out.

When they are about ready to plant out spray them once again with Vaporgard which reduces transplant shock and then wait a day or two before planting into the garden.

Then placing 2 litre plastic bottles, with their bottoms cut off and cap removed, over each of the seedlings will give them a great start.

Gardening & OUTDOOR LIVING The sweet scent of Daphne Daphne odora ‘Leucanthe’ will always be a favourite shrub because the flowers possess one of those magical perfumes, miles better than anything that comes in a bottle.

Plant it near a path or doorway, or perhaps near a window which is often left open, so the scent, which is obvious some metres away from the plant, can be enjoyed to the full.

The flowers, produced for a long time in late winter and early spring, can be picked and brought indoors, but be sure to cut them with green stems - cutting back into old wood is not good for the bush.

For an added scent sensation in late winter and early spring, plant Daphne in the foreground of scented Michelias.

This hardy shrub will grow in sun but is best in light shade as the lower light makes for the most attractive, deep green leaf colour.

You can grow it in dappled shade or against a south facing wall, but wherever it is positioned it needs good soil, good drainage, and feeding with the sort of fertiliser you would give to rhododendrons and camellias.

Black caps earn their legacy win This group of New Zealand cricketers deserve the World Test Championship triumph.

The magical sixth-day performance which saw Kane Williamson’s men beat the might of India was the legacy cementing victory for this golden group of Kiwi players.

For me, a sleep-deprived week of viewing ends with writing a victorious column in the warm after-glow of the victory while still wearing my Kane Williamson ‘steady the ship’ hat.

There will be many cricket tragics who would have happily gone to sleep exhausted but immensely satisfied.

The result eases the pain of the 2019 World Cup final and ensures our tiny country of 5 million gets respect from the major cricket powers globally.

As was mentioned on the commentary, for once, nice guys do finish first.

A result like this takes a lot of people and preparation.

Credit must go to the 22 players

who played test matches for New Zealand over the two-year cycle.

In a quiet moment, I’m sure former captain Brendon McCullum and coach Mike Hesson take personal satisfaction from the result.

The duo laid the platform for this unrivalled culture of success.

The fast bowling quartet of Tim Southee, Trent Boult, Neil Wagner and Kyle Jamieson is the best quartet of bowlers any one country has at its disposal.

Williamson outplayed Indian captain Virat Kohli not only with

bat in hand but tactically as well.

Even the old warhorse, Ross Taylor, likely no longer at his best, was able to hit the winning runs after a gritty unbeaten 47 which was an ideal innings for the situation.

A country like New Zealand should never beat India whose population of more than 1 billion is cricket-mad to the point of it being a religion.

New Zealand cricket must get credit for organising two tests against England in the lead-up to

the game.

It allowed the team to be better prepared than the Indians and helped them adjust to the English conditions.

In the big moments, that proved vital.

This group deserve a victory to truly hang their hat on, it’s a legacy triumph that could very well be the cricket highlight of many generations.

Hopefully, it inspires kids to play the game so future success is not so far away.

Rangers show-up North Wellington defensive issues

It was a case of déjà vu all over again when Miramar Rangers hosted North Wellington FC in round 12 of 18 in the Men’s Central Football League on Saturday. The two sides had met in the Chatham Cup a week earlier and Rangers won the day then with a 4-1 win.

The margin was the same this time as well with Rangers coming out 5-2 winners and maintaining their position at the top of the league. With just six matches still to play it would be a very brave punter indeed to bet against the men from Miramar not finishing in the top three teams and progressing through to the national league summer competition featuring the top 10 sides in the nation.

Norths would claim the opening and closing goals but the damage was well and truly inflicted in the middle and towards the end of the match and the Johnsonville based side could offer no credible answer to a well drilled and unrelenting

Rangers attack.

Those on the deck had a birds eye view of the first goal when Norths’ Joe Hopper somehow got a toe to the ball which connected well enough and beat keeper Zac Jones to nestle into the back of the net. Harris Zeb pegged one back for Miramar after 26 minutes and Sam Mason-Smith added one more shortly afterwards.

Former Norths’ signing Natham Simes made it one more and Norths went into the sheds 3-1 down at the break.

In the second spell Miramar showed why they are leading the grade. The more time elapsed, the more dominant they became. They had greater firepower across the paddock and generally played a more composed and structured game. Owen Barnett scored for Miramar after an hour of play and Norths conceded shortly after again when Sam Mason-Smith made it a double for a 5-1 score line. At the two thirds mark, the table shows clearly which sides are likely to proceed through to the national round and which team might face the drop into the local Premier League in 2022. Jville make HOBM work for win

A severely under-manned Johnsonville put in a spirited effort against Hutt Old Boys Marist before succumbing 19-3 at Helston Park on Saturday.

With up to 10 frontline players missing through a myriad of reasons, Johnsonville were able to keep within touching distance for the opening 50 minutes before HOBM bagged four crucial Swindale Shield points.

The wet weather and having international referee Mike Fraser in charge, likely helped Johnsonville keep the score close with coach Jason Adamson proud of the effort even though the execution was lacking at times.

“To be in the lead after 50 minutes was good.

“Their effort was pleasing, we had chances but we just lacked composure at crucial moments.

“We wanted to score tries but we just weren’t able to capitalise.

“The scrum went well but our line out struggled early and that’s been an issue for us this season.

I thought the guys that stepped-up to play did a really good job and tried hard.

“Old Boys just got away from us late in the piece.”

Johnsonville will play Northern United at Jerry Collins Stadium in the final round of the Swindale Shield on Saturday.
