The world renowned opera singer, pianist and vocal coach died a day before her 93rd birthday last month.

Event organiser and choir singer Natalie Brockie says while she didn’t have a personal relationship with Emily, she knew her impact and had seen her watch the choir from timeto-time.

“Our atrium was packed with people and the overhang to the hospital was full with patients watching.

“It was the most uplifting experience for a group of oldies like us to be supported by such amazing voices, it was fantastic,” Natalie says.

The last time we sang as a group was Anzac Day and Emily had watched us which meant a lot.

“Emily was a very understated and modest lady and that came through.

“Linden Loader, who is a noted singer in her own right, gives up her time each Monday to teach us but she said she couldn’t sleep that night because it was so good.”

Emily grew up in Newmilns, Ayrshire where she grew up before heading to London to attend the Royal School of Music.

Emily had a stellar career singing in England before relocating to New Zealand in 1964

Ken Gurney farewells CAB after 14 years

Ken Gurney thought he would take a role at Johnsonville’s Citizens Advice Bureau for two years as a semi-retirement move, that was 14 years ago.

Ken will retire at the end of the month from a job that has seen him achieve what he wanted to do from the start, make a difference in his community.

“When I first came in here, I came from a background of marketing and advertising and I thought it would be quite nice to give something back to the community.

“I thought I’d give it two years but as I got immersed in it between the budgeting service, food bank, legal clinic and

working with the volunteers the time has just flown by.”.

“Here I am 14 years later and I feel it’s time to retire.

Ken leads a team of 44 volunteers and he says it is their passion that has continuously motivated him.

“The dedication of my volunteers is amazing, the work they do for people in the community.”

“I feel they have always enjoyed doing the work and coming in.

“80 percent of the volunteers who are here now were here when I started and that says a lot.

“We try to empower clients and we try to give people options to give them a good outcome.

“A lot of the time when they go away you wonder how it all panned out.”

Ken moved to Wellington from Scotland in 1964 and has always loved the area “We mirror society, the number of clients coming in with issues like employment, housing, bullying.

“We try to tell people there is hope.

“Often when we ask people what they would like to happen they just say they wanted to talk to someone.

“I say to my people that we are a listening ear, that’s what we do.”

“It takes a lot of guts for people to come to us for help.”

Ken’s wife Margaret is also retiring at the end of June and they plan to take a month to ponder their next move.

Association Chair Andrea Skews says this started with erecting signs along the stream which warned the community about the water quality posing a danger to the health of people and animals who played or swam in the Waipahihi Karori Stream however, she feels the next step is the most important.

“By creating a caretaking group, we’re empowering local residents, environmental experts and Wellington leaders to work together to protect the local waterway, educate our community and monitor the stream for future generations.”

Community initiative in Karori for collaborative care of waterways The Karori Residents’ Association, Wellington City Council, Whaitua Te Whanganui-a-Tara Committee, Mountains to Sea Wellington Trust and local residents have come together to form the Friends of Waipahihi Karori Stream to enhance the mana of the Waipahihi Karori Stream and ensure its health for future generations.

They are also in talks with local mana whenua.

The Friends group has been formed under a Memorandum of Understanding with Wellington City Council and builds on work already undertaken by the Karori Residents’ Association which has been raising awareness around pollution of their local stream for several years.

Mountains to Sea Wellington Trust are supporting this work, with the next step being running training for locals to monitor the health of the stream themselves.

Wellington ratepayers will subsidise less of the cost of alcohol licensing in the city after the Council unanimously voted to amend its Alcohol Fees Bylaw to increase how much some alcohol licence holders pay to obtain or renew their licence.

Wellington Mayor Andy Foster says the licencing cost will not change because of the increase in fees, but the level that the industry contributes to the cost of licensing will increase.

Government urged to back regional ownership of transport assets (

Greater Wellington is urging significant change to the Public Transport Operating Model (PTOM) to bring transport assets under the control of regional councils to create greater certainty in delivering quality public transport services.

“We strongly hold that, for regional councils to be truly strategic in planning and providing world-class public transport, we need to have stronger control of critical infrastructure such as buses, depots and charging infrastructure,” says Greater Wellington chair Cr Daran Ponter.

“We are asking for the ability to own or control our assets to ensure we have this option available to us when we make investment decisions.

“Owning, or at least controlling, these assets is key to minimising the risks to delivering public transport, which have been plainly evident in the Wellington region as a combination of industrial action and driver shortages has hampered service provision. We are looking for a strong signal from the Government that it will

back regional council ownership and allow the sector to re-set public transport. ”We want to strengthen our communities’ confidence and pride in our public transport, which will only come with us re-setting some of the underlying frameworks and we want to work closely with the Government on a funding model that will lead to that outcome.”

According to Greater Wellington’s submission, a change to ownership of public transport assets would provide a range of benefits.

“Ownership or at least control of the assets will strengthen our role in providing public transport, allowing us to move from the side lines on significant issues such as employee terms and conditions and workforce planning. It will bring us influence and the ability to play a stronger role in ensuring continuity of service delivery,” says Greater Wellington’s chair of the Transport Committee, Cr Roger Blakeley.

“A model based on more active ownership by councils of key public transport infrastructure would better balance the risk profile for the public good. The overall outcome would be a stronger, more reliable and more resilient fleet and service,” Roger says.

“I grew up in Khandallah but I’ve been involved in the arts and crafts scene in Newtown but since I’m moving back to Khandallah I feel there is a need for something like that here,” Amamda says.

Cemeteries Management ENERGY FRIENDY HOME Plan gets green light A new management plan for Makara, Karori and Tawa cemeteries has been approved, following a unanimous vote by Wellington City Councillors, on Tuesday Makara Cemetery and Karori Cemetery are both at critical points in terms of capacity, and Mayor Andy Foster says the plan will set the direction for how they are managed over the next 10 years and beyond.

“The management plan follows an extensive assessment of the city’s functional and operational needs, with the aim of understanding changing community needs and expectations, as well as providing for a diverse range of views and beliefs.

“We engaged with a wide range of cemetery users through an informal pre-consultation, which was followed by a formal consultation on a draft plan towards the end of last year.”

Chair of the Pororo Rangaranga | Social, Cultural and Economic Committee, Councillor Jill Day, says feedback received during the process was used to shape the final plan.

“We’d like to thank everyone who took the time to make a submission. The updated plan marks a new era for Wellington city’s cemeteries, and will ensure we can be sustainable where possible, and continue to meet the needs of our growing city, now and in the future.”

The Cemeteries Management Plan addresses a wide range of issues, including: Providing for future demand by acquiring more land and doing the master planning for its development.

Altrusa Ohariu have been awarded a USD $4000 grant to put towards their Healthy Minds project.

Healthy Minds is a trio of initiatives to support positive mental health within the community.

“We are excited to be able to partner with and help three different organisations – Brain Garden Trust, Wellington Samaritans, and Windley School” says Altrusa member Emily Burton.

“We will purchase books for the Brain Garden Trust to use as they support children, and their families, living with long-term health conditions by teaching strategies for managing anxiety and stress.

“Wellington Samaritans have asked for assistance to recruit and retain volunteers. We will also partner with Windley School to help equip their sensory room for students with special needs to help manage their stress levels.“ The grants are awarded bi-annually from the Altrusa International Foundation and are available to Altrusa Clubs around the world.

“As part of the grant we have to fundraise a proportional amount locally to go towards

Volunteering at Youthline looks and feels different for everyone. We have some very defined pathways for those interested in counselling, youth work and events, but we are equally interested in volunteers seeking other skills-based or general volunteer roles.

NORTH WELLINGTON VOLUNTARY SERVICE AWARDS Nominations for the presentation of the 2021 North Wellington Voluntary Service Awards are now open.

To qualify for an award the person nominated must have performed Voluntary service without any form of remuneration and for a minimum period of five (5) years.

Nominations must be lodged on the formal Nomination Form and include all relevant information for consideration by Committee. Nominations close on 6 August with the Secretary.

Enliven Connect is a volunteer buddy programme designed to help people with early-stage dementia, and elders who are facing life alone or disconnected from their community.

The programme works by matching volunteers with community members who have been identified as needing support.

“We hear of so many reasons why people end up lonely, isolated or without support – especially now that families are so geographically spread,” says Enliven Connect coordinator Jo Rea.

Volunteers who join the programme are supported to spend regular, quality time with their ‘buddy’, by supporting them to continue their everyday

activities, interests and hobbies.

“Our volunteers usually take people out, either for a cup of tea, do some shopping, or even watch a movie together,” Jo says.

“Sometimes this means going to someone’s house for a cuppa, or going out for a walk and having a chat,” Jo says.

Enliven Connect was established in 2018 and its services cover Lower Hutt, Wainuiomata and Stokes Valley.

Jo says the programme looks after just over a dozen elders in the community and they are looking for more volunteers to replace some who have moved

on.

She says ideal volunteers for Enliven Connect are those who are caring, reliable and friendly, with excellent communications skills.

Positive ageing service Enliven has more than 260 volunteers donating their time in its homes across the lower North Island. We are taking this time during National Volunteer Week to say thank you for their dedication.

Police stymie crime information

the community which alerted people to property crimes committed in their area and reminded people to secure their properties.

A recent decision, apparently made by Sergeant Sarah Riddering at the Johnsonville Police Station, curtailed the supply of information.

Community members are outraged at the decision made by the Police to stop supplying incident reports to local groups.

Local volunteer Ray Wright has been putting together the statistics of crimes in each area for decades providing an invaluable service to

Other residents have contacted the Independent Herald and are going to put Official Information Act requests in for each month to get hold of the information that the community is entitled to have.

Cubs and Scouts Marine Education Centre

Paparangi Cubs, Johnsonville Kowhai Cubs and Northland Cubs all visited the bait house aquarium recently to learn the importance of Wellington's local and national marine enviroments.

All 44 Cubs and 9 leaders and parents were shown enthusiastically around by Eddie and Ava, keen Marine Biologists.

The Scouts and Cubs delighted in the hands-on touch gently pools, where they got to pick up and feel what starfish, sea urchins, crabs or snails feel like and how to handle with respect.

They got to see sea horse’s close-up, and some learned about how dad gives birth and saw an Octopus and leaned how big they and giant squid can grow.

Sadly, they also learned about the rubbish in of all the oceans around the world and what we need to do, to improve things for all life in our oceans.

They also learned that the centre opened in 1996 and is in its 26th year of being open and was the inspiration of Judy Hutt and Dr Victor Anderlini, their goal has always been to pass their love and caring of the environment and its biodiversity onto others through teaching about it.

Vaccinations for the rest of Aotearoa New Zealand The COVID-19 vaccination rollout for the general population starts from the end of July.

Our COVID-19 vaccination programme has built momentum steadily since February. We are vaccinating around 100,000 people a week at the moment. In the second half of the year we hit top speed and everyone in New Zealand aged 16 and over will be able to be vaccinated.

Moving to the general population So far, vaccinations have been made available to those most at risk of getting COVID-19 to limit the chances of it getting into the wider population.

With more vaccine supply coming on, and having ramped up our infrastructure, vaccinations for everyone else in New Zealand aged 16 and over (the general population) start from 28 July.

This is a very large group of people. To make this flow smoothly, we will break this down by age bands.

All people aged 60 plus can book their vaccinations from 28 July.

Then, two weeks later, people who are 55 plus. From there, new age bands will be opened up every 2–3 weeks based on confirmed deliveries of the vaccine and the speed of rollout to earlier groups.

By mid to late August, invitations should be open for people over 45. By mid to late September, invitations should be open for those over 35, with everyone else being eligible from October.

Invitations Most people will get a direct invitation to book – either by email, text, phone call or in the post. You will then be able to book through Book My Vaccine, a new national booking system that will be online from 28 July, or phone a new national call centre. Availability of booking slots (the date, time and place you can be vaccinated) will vary between district health board (DHB) regions.

Once you are eligible to be vaccinated, you can be vaccinated at any time. There is no cut off.

Registration Even if your age band isn’t open, everyone aged 16 and over will be able to go to Book My Vaccine to register for an invitation from 28 July. Registration means we will be certain to have your correct contact details and when your age group is opened, you will get an invitation telling you it’s your turn to book.

Safe use of medicines We all need to take medicines at some time during our lives - for some it is everyday, others only sometimes for a cold or headache. Self Care pharmacists can provide you with the fact card Safe Use of Medicines, and help you with any questions you have about any medicines you are taking. Whether you buy medicines or get them on prescription, Self Care pharmacists advise that they have some good suggestions for taking medicines properly, and for getting the best results from their use.

Know what your medicines are for. Even if your doctor has explained, when you collect your medicines discuss with your pharmacist what each medicine is for. Your pharmacist can give you information on the expected effects of each medicine and how to take or use them correctly, and whether they will interact with other medicines you have been prescribed or medicines that you have purchased.

Before taking any medicine, read the label carefully to confirm you are taking the correct medicine, the correct dose, at the correct time. This is especially important if you take many medicines at different times of the day. Labels have other important information such as when to take the medicines in relation to food (with food or on an empty stomach), whether the medicine must be swallowed whole, whether it has to be used-up by a certain date. Pharmacists can also advise you if you miss a dose and when to take the next one. Sometimes medication may be large and difficult to swallow. Not all tablets and capsules can be halved or crushed and your pharmacist can help you with this.

Talk to your pharmacist if you develop any unusual symptoms after you start taking a medicine. It is best to get this checked out as it may be an allergic reaction or an unwanted side effect of the medicine.

Always measure liquid medicines ac-

curately, using proper measures, to make sure you get the correct dose. A range of reusable measuring devices are available from pharmacies and your pharmacist can advise you on the one most suitable for you and your family.

Drink a large glass of water as you swallow tablets or capsules. This will stop the medicine becoming stuck in your throat and help it get down to your stomach quickly to start working as soon as possible. It helps to lean forward as you swallow.

Only take medicines that have been prescribed for you, and those recommended for you by your pharmacist. Do not use other people’s medicines because they may not be suitable for your health condition. Other people’s medicines may interact with other medicines you are taking.

Store medicines correctly and dispose of them safely. Safe means out of reach of children - preferably in a locked cupboard.

This is really vital when children come to your home only occasionally. Store medicines in a dry place, away from direct light or heat, so they don’t degrade. However, some medicines need to be kept in the fridge.

Don’t keep medicines that are no longer needed. Despite the wastage, there are safety concerns in keeping old medicines “just in case”. Don’t throw them out in general rubbish, instead, talk to your pharmacist about safe disposal. Medicines returned to your pharmacist cannot be reused, and charges cannot be refunded.

Discuss with your pharmacist if your medicines look different from what you are expecting. It is best to be reassured that everything is as it should be. If you are having trouble managing your medicines, your pharmacist may be able to help with their packaging especially for your own individual medication needs. Talk to your Self Care pharmacist about your medicine, to get the best outcome for your health.

The Rockwell scale is used to define just how hard the steel is – the higher the number the harder the steel.

German knives are 57 on the scale with Japanese knives closer to 60 to 63.

Japanese kitchen knives are precision tools, designed for finer, delicate slicing. They also tend to hold an edge better, however, are less durable and more prone to chipping.

NRL flexes entertainment muscle over Super Rugby You have to hand it to the NRL. Every weekend their competition products are compelling, entertaining matchups that keep both fans and neutrals coming back for more.

I’ve never been one to subscribe to the rugby v league debate.

People can enjoy both without turning it into a matter of allegiances.

However, on a weekend where Super Rugby had another underwhelming final in a competition

which structure was illogical, the NRL kept delivering.

The Penrith Panthers and Melbourne Storm are clearly the two best teams when fully fit.

Nathan Cleary, Panthers halfback, is the most pivotal player in the sport and he sets alight his team to play some scintillating football.

With exception of the Warriors’ turgid 10-6 loss to the Newcastle Knights, each of the games over

the weekend were a fun watch.

Even the blowout games like the South Sydney Rabbitohs 46-0 thumping of the under-fire Brisbane Broncos had some stellar free-flowing football that rugby, at this present time bogged down by scrum resets and television reviews for foul play, could only dream of.

The NRL have also found a better balance in officiating high tackles over the past fortnight.

Less games are being affected by

sin bins for high shots and while the game may seem softer to the hardcore fans, there has at least been more common sense with the adjudications of late.

With the NRL bye this week due to State of Origin and no rugby between the international window, it will be a lean weekend for winter sport.

Then, the All Blacks play a potentially ho-hum set of tests against Fiji and Tonga to start their season.

It is hard to get excited about games that don’t look compelling on paper.

It may be a nice opportunity for Pasifika players to shine but if the men in black don’t win by 50 points in each game, then questions will be asked of coach Ian Foster, who has little wriggle-room with the rugby public.

In the meantime, the NRL’s content continues to outshine rugby in a major way.

North Wellington bow out of Chatham Cup

Top flight men’s football across the country took a day off last weekend to accommodate Round 4 of the Chatham Cup, the national knock out competition.

The same can be said for the women’s sides in the Kate Sheppard Cup. There were two outcomes when Miramar Rangers hosted North Wellington FC in the Chatham Cup at David Farrington Park on Saturday. The first was that North Wellington’s blue and white Away strip was a devil to clean and required two treatments of Napisan to gain some respectability. The second was that Miramar cruised away to a comfortable 4-1 win in the end to be part of the last 16 teams in the country who are still in the hunt for the prestigious trophy.

The normally pristine surface at Farrington eventually surrendered to the rain which had been a constant in recent days and was present for much of the match.

This did not stop both teams performing their best in trying conditions, much to the delight of the fans; many of whom

were sheltering under the eaves of the balcony at the Miramar clubrooms.

It took just seven minutes for the scoreboard attendant to rattle into action when Scott Midgley eventually won the game of pin ball inside the Norths 6 yard box and squeezed one home for Miramar.

Daniel Mulholland pulled it back for Norths to square the match after 15 minutes when he calmly struck a well flighted ball under the Miramar keeper who was correctly diving to his right, but was too late to connect. One all remained the score at half time despite end to end opportunities for both sides.

The second half began with the same tempo as the first and the action was intense. Ten minutes later Miramar gained the advantage through a stretched norths defence which over committed North’s keeper Nick Stanton and made it too easy for Haris Zeb to slot the ball into an open net. It was 3-1 to Miramar after another bout of pin ball too close to the Norths’ goal and this time it was Sam Mason-Smith who did the damage for Rangers. A wayward

Norths pass 5 minutes from full time well and truly put the icing on the Miramar cake after Mikhail Bredeveldt made the most of the Norths’ error for a 4-1 victory.

Other local winners in the round were Waterside Karori who defeated Premier League Stop Out 3-2, Lower Hutt’s 2-0 half time lead over Wellington Olympic was eventually reduced to 2-1 in the final analysis and Western Suburbs enjoyed a memorable 3-0 win at home against Napier City Rovers who had been on the road for three games over the last eight days.

In the Kate Sheppard Cup, Wellington United squeezed past Palmerston North Marist 4-3 and Wairarapa United made no race of it at all with a 9-1 win at home over Victoria University.

The Men’s Central League resumes again in earnest this weekend with Waterside Karori hosting Petone and North Wellington and their blue and white Away kit heading back to David Farrington Park and Miramar Rangers once more.

Marsden netball soaring to new heights

Netball at Samuel Marsden Collegiate is on the rise.

For the first time in the school’s history, their top netball team has earned the right to play in the Premier 1 competition following a 47-23 win over Queen Margaret College last week.

Development officer and coach Efi Fa’atau says the result has been four years in the making.

“It’s been huge for us with lots of people involved to make it happen.

“We laid out a five year plan and this is year four of it.

“Making it to Premier 1 was one of the first goals.

“We want to be known as not only an academic school but also a netball school.

“We knew four years ago we had a The Samuel Marsden Collegiate netball team has made it to the Premier 1 grade for the first group of players that were willing to put the work in. time in school history.

“This team has created a hard working environment where rewards look after themselves, they deserve this.”

Efi says the goal in Premier 1 is to avoid relegation by not being in the bottom two teams at the end of the season.

“It’s going to be a big step-up but we are going into it with our eyes wide open.

“There may be some cricket scores but its all part of the process.”

Efi says the added physicality of Premier 1 will help them in the Lower North Island Secondary School Championships in August where they will try to qualify for nationals.

In a sign of depth, the Senior B team beat Tawa 37-27 to move up to Prem Reserve 4, which is a club competition.

The last time Marsden had a Snr B team in a Prem Reserve grade was 2012..

The school has also had its first national age-group player with Rachel Price making the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ team.
