Hairdresser Adele Butler, at Zeal Hair Studio in Crofton Downs, says the end of lockdown has seen her small suburban business faced with scheduling appointments for between 350-400 anxious clients.

“It’s hard to keep up. I can’t get an exact count because they’re coming in from all different platforms. Facebook, email, on my mobile, Instagram, our

website…. I’m hopeful I’ve got them all,” she says.

Adele’s in no doubt how important their service is to people.

“It’s part of wellbeing. If your hair’s a mess, you feel a mess After all, it’s the crown you never take off.”

To cope, she’s organised the salon’s six staff to be working two shifts between 8.30am to 8.30pm, seven days a week.

She says that as well as meeting distancing requirements, having fewer staff and clients in the salon at any one time helps ensure that staff wellbeing needs are met too.

“We’re keeping the communication going and I am making sure they have

a lunch hour,” she says.

Requirements on day one, when our photo was taken, included the need for masks on both staff and customers.

However, by the end of that day, Adele says that ruling was removed from the ministry website, replaced by advice that staff could choose to wear them and

clients did not have to.

She feels they are lucky to be part of such a good community and she says she has such a good team as well, which is just as well, as there is no great let up in sight.

Already clients are rebooking for four to six weeks from now.

Appointment for a ‘desperate’ customer A “desperate” customer at Zeal Hair Studio, Lois Wood, was in the chair early on the morning of Day 1 of Level 2.

Owner/manager Adele Butler had fitted her in at short notice because a customer decided to wait until the children went

back to school.

Lois moved back to New Zealand from Perth on February 9, going into quarantine in Hamilton.

She says she was then fortunate to get to temporary accommodation in Wadestown

before lockdown.

She’s also very glad to be back in New Zealand at this time, and grateful to get her appointment so soon.

“And they’ve done a wonderful job!”

W hen eight-yea r-old Adam Parker wandered into the kitchen of their Crofton Downs home on Tuesday morning he was delighted to find his family entertaining a kaka who had tapped on the window at breakfast time.

They’d slid the window open and fed the cheeky bird segments of pear.

When the slices didn’t come through fast enough, he poked his beak into the gap seeking more of the

delicacy.

Adam went on the deck to investigate further and found himself with a new “bestie”.

The kaka eagerly sought out the gifts of pear he fed him, then apple, and finally jumped on his hand to get closer to the food supply.

When Adam, who being a bit unwell, was having a day off school, he went up to investigate his garden, the kaka hopped right behind him all the way. (He was rewarded with some grapes.)

By the time you read this, we will have all been in Level Two for a week. It is also a week since Finance Minister Grant Robertson delivered the budget.

It was serendipitous that both occurred on the same day, as both represent a big leap forward in progressing our lives and country into the changed world that Covid-19has visited upon us.

I spent the lockdown helping and listening to local business owners and passing their concerns on to our economic team, while also obtaining food supplies for those supplying families in need.

While we can take a moment to reflect on the competent and inspired leadership and decision making of our leaders, and the cooperation of all Kiwis which has seen us identified internationally as the country of best practice, its time now to focus on the future.

And that is what the budget does. I spoke with a group of local business leaders the morning after the budget, and one usually pretty cynical individual was, for him, effusive in his praise for Grant’s budget. He said it gives him time and incentive to adapt his business and staff to the new environment, instead of having to lay them off which he would have had to do, but for such a business focussed budget.

We have that unified and competent leadership.

Being exposed to a good cross section of the electorate enabled me to get a good understanding of what is required to ensure everyone in Ōhāriu and beyond gets what they need to thrive in the post Covid-19 world.

We aren’t post-Covid-19 yet, and recent outbreaks in Australia remind us of the need to listen to experts, and not to rabble rousing media commentators who were mostly critical of lockdown in the first place.

Being Covid-19 free is the best thing we can do for our country, so please conform with the rules, however frustrating, and make sure the budget can do what it is designed to do; get New Zealand working again.

The Kay(e)s are back

The Karori Community Centre is just one of the Wellington City Council facilities to open in Alert Level 2.

And the two Kay(e)s are back in business.

Manager Kay Webster and office administrator Kaye Jervis have been on site since they opened on Monday this week.

It has, as Kay expected, been a slow start .

“A lot of groups are waiting to start until after Queen’s Birthday weekend. But that’s

only two weeks away.”

That said, their first exercise class did start at 10am on Monday .

“And wouldn’t you know it, we had eight people lined up within three minutes. “ Delays are necessary. There is the need to sign in for contact tracing, and to use the hand sanitiser.

Night classes back

New funding of $16m to boost Government-funded Adult and Community Education (ACE) will allow more than 11,000 New Zealanders more opportunities to learn, Education Minister Chris Hipkins says.

“This includes a modern approach to rebuilding night classes, which were slashed in the middle of our last economic crisis in 2010,” he says.

“It will expand courses to better support people displaced from work and facing barriers to entering the labour market, and people experiencing social isolation.

The minister says this could include courses that build increasingly essential digital knowledge and foundation courses giving people opportunities in areas with skills shortages, as well as courses for people who can feel isolated.

Back to school

School students in the area, like students nationwide, are returning to school in Alert Level 2 on what is, for many, a staggered basis.

Schools are celebrating welcoming students back while managing multiple requirements.

Classrooms and reception areas have had to be cleaned and set up and staff, parents and caregivers, as well as the

students, familiarised with the routines needed for sanitising, distancing and tracking.

Then there is the measuring and closing of learning gaps that may have opened up for some students during the lockdown, and monitoring the inevitable anxieties and concerns emerging from the uncertainties that surround us.

In one local school, St Benedict’s in Khandallah, board

chairperson Richard UerataJennings is, however, very confident.

He says, as t he school moves into Level 2, that their school’s community has been nothing short of fantastic.

“The amount of support, goodwill and rallying around each other typifies all that we stand for.

“I’m really proud of our staff and how they’ve kept first-

class and authentic learning going for all of our students during the lockdown period.

“It’s fair to say that our school’s systems are in place, our communication is timely and clear and we as a Board of Trustees and parent body are both comfortable and confident, with all that’s in place to keep our students, staff and parent body safe, now that we’re all back at school.”

Petone business supports Women’s Refuge Petone wool and blanket maker Stansborough Ltd is focusing on giving back to the community as they move into restarting their business.

The group aims to donate $50 from every purchase to the Women’s Refuge in Lower Hutt which helps hundreds of local women.

Over the last 30 years in Petone, many local volunteers have spent their time spinning and creating wool blankets, owner Cheryl El-

dridge, says.

“Each season we launch a new range and try to help locals while doing it,” she says.

“This year, we hope it to be a collective item to remind people of this period.

Blankets can give a sense of nurturing and protection which is a good thing at the moment.

“Maybe we can give a bit of hope.”

Cheryl’s focus has always

been on keeping the process 100 per cent sustainable. The wool comes from sheep on her farm in The Wairarapa, “People usually tend to keep these items forever.”

As many businesses are returning to work in Level 2, Cheryl says the team have been passionately working throughout quarantine.

Mayor Andy Foster chaired the second meeting of the Mayoral Taskforce into water, sewage and stormwater (three waters) last Thursday.

“We pressed pause to focus on Covid-19 for seven weeks, but throughout that period there was never any suggestion that we would shy away from grasping this nettle,” Andy says.

“The taskforce is looking into the state of Wellington’s three waters assets, the level of historical investment, and what is going to be needed in the future. This is likely to affect both public and private networks.

“The first part of our work is very much on information gathering,” he says.

Recommendations are expected to flow through to council’s Asset Management and Long Term plans.

On Friday, Andy said that they had just heard from the Department of Internal Affairs that Wellington’s challenges are replicated across New Zealand.

That means, he says, there is a national

conversation about investment in and funding for a three-waters system.

Taskforce discussion covered how water assets are managed in the city and region, some of the associated challenges and how models worked in other jurisdictions such as Auckland and Scotland.

Wellington Water officers updated the taskforce on the renewal of the Willis Street/Dixon Street sewer pipe, the Mount Albert sludge pipes, Moa Point interceptor and the Omāroro water reservoir.

They also gave an overview of wastewater overflows, measuring water losses and leakages and the role of water meters in providing more accurate information about water leakage.

Their next meeting is scheduled for May 26.

EYE ON CRIME In Johnsonville a burglary took place at one of the four flats at a property in Rotoiti Street.

The female offender knocked at the door and asked if she could use the victim’s toilet.

The victim agreed and after using the facilities the offender went into the kitchen asking for a glass of water before leaving the flat.

The victim then discovered that a wallet containing $120

had been stolen from a nearby bedroom.

A white Honda Odyssey stationwagon parked overnight in Dominion Park Street had both front and rear registration plates stolen.

In Khandallah a blue Mazda Axela hatchback parked overnight in Punjab Street also had both front and rear registration plates stolen.

house in Montgomery Avenue was found damaged. There is a dent in the drive’s door and what are believed to be BB shot marks elsewhere on the vehicle.

A silver Ford Falcon awaiting repairs at a service station in Karori Road was taken away and believed stolen.

In Wilton a silver Toyota Regius Hiace parked during the day in Wilton Road had its rear registration plate stolen.

A blue Honda Logo hatchback parked overnight in Shropshire Avenue was stolen. It was recovered in Kapiti Road, Paraparaumu.

In Wadestown the garage door of a house in Sefton Street was forced

open and a mountain bike and a child’s bike were stolen.

In Highbury an E-Bike and the charger were stolen from a garage in Zetland Street. The bike had been secured by a lock. The garage door had not been forced but the remote for the door had been left in the letterbox close to the garage door.

In Ngauranga the premises of a commercial company were broken into during a weekend.

The intruders stripped the air conditioner units from the roof and entered the building through a hole.

In March this year, on March 12 to be precise, we ran a page 3 story about the Himalayan Trust’s Everest Summit Challenge being undertaken in support of Himalayan communities in Nepal.

At that stage, one member of the team involved in the 24 hours of the relay challenge was emphatic that Kaukau was not the correct name of this local geographical feature and it should be called by its earlier name, Tarikaka.

But the Independent Herald has uncovered the fact that neither name is officially gazetted. The New Zealand Geographic Board says Kaukau is still an unofficial recorded name for the mountain (or perhaps more precisely hill).

It was part of the Taranaki Whanui ki Te Upoko o Te Ika settlement negotiations which was signed on 19 August 19 2008. A deed to amend this settlement was signed on December 19.

Major work on all Wellington tracks Upgrading of the Wellington region’s rail network recommenced at the weekend with buses replacing trains across the network.

After more than seven weeks of only being able to carry out essential maintenance work, the KiwiRail Upgrade Programme and track maintenance work began across all four Wellington lines - Johnsonville, Hutt Valley, Wairarapa and Kapiti.

KiwiRail and Greater Wellington Regional Council, through Metlink, are working together to create more

reliable networks.

That includes replacing and modernising the overhead power system and signals power supply, renewing the track across the network including inside the four major tunnels, double tracking between Trentham and Upper Hutt, improving the Wellington Railway Station, and changes at the Plimmerton station.

“Replacing the overhead electrical systems is a big job and includes constructing new mast foundations, replacing the steel masts and structures and installing and electrifying

the wiring,” says Kiwirail’s chief operating officer Todd Moyle.

“We will also be carrying out sleeper replacement work and bridge and track maintenance. To carry out this vital work we need both safe access to the tracks and enough space for our teams to work.

“Unfortunately, some disruption for those using train services is unavoidable,” he adds.

The Wellington Metro Upgrade Programme is said to be one of the most significant rail projects for over 60 years.

Having responded to the health crisis brought about

by COVID-19 New Zealand is now facing an economic crisis not seen in this country for generations.

Government has a role to play in our economic recovery.

The greatest thing it could do is to provide simple rules and conditions for people to have confidence to invest again in businesses, to create jobs and opportunities. The strongest and quickest route to recovery is through unleashing private sector investment.

The wage subsidy was a welcome aid to help save jobs. That will come crashing down if the businesses are forced to close before the subsidy ends.

Businesses need cash flow now to keep them afloat and incentives to invest more capital into future opportunity.

That is a where National’s Have proposals for a GST cash-back

of capital investment would make a real difference.

Government spending should be focused on creating long-term, sustainable jobs.

Infrastructure projects which add capability and meet robust cost-benefit tests are worthy areas for spending and will help to provide economic stimulus.

They’re part of National’s plan to help New Zealand recover sooner and stronger. Just as we did under a National-led Government after the last financial crisis.

It’s where the Government’s Budget falls down.

Borrowing an additional $140 billion without a plan will not recover the economy. It will simply indebt the country for decades to come.

We need better than that.

Welcome to refugees The Government’s Rebuilding Together Budget includes funding to extend the Community Organisation Refugee Sponsorship (CORS) pilot for a further three years.

New Zealand conducted a small pilot of this programme, which in 2018 brought 23 people seeking refuge to rebuild their lives in New Zealand.

The programme differs from the standard Refugee Quota programme as with Community Sponsorship, community groups take the lead and provide the support that newcomers need.

In 2018, more than 10,000 New Zealanders signed the I Welcome Pledge, calling for the programme to be made permanent.

Working together in times of crisis

Petone Pak’nSave employees have been essential workers for the last seven weeks throughout alert level 4 and level 3 lockdown.

The drastic move into complete lockdown in March was daunting at first, they say.

“We had to get used to a new way of doing things,” Sharyn Kiernan says.

“Our bosses put so many things in place to make it easier to do our jobs. They’ve done everything to keep us safe.

“In the beginning it was quite crazy and there was a lot of panic buying. No one really knew what to expect.”

What has been the most surprising to Sharyn is how much of what they are doing has become “quite normal”.

“We change ourselves to do what needs to be done and what is needed for our country.”

What makes the community at Pak’nSave great is the way they all support and help each other out.

In normal circumstances, Tracey McGregor works as the office manager. But because of the change of routine, it has been all hands on deck and she has been helping out at the checkouts.

“We’ve always been like that. If people need help here we just go and do it,” she says.

“We look after each other here.

It’s a home away from home” Sharyn adds.

Pak’nSave has around 200 employees.

“Customers have been good and quite understanding,” Tracey says.

“A lot of them have been saying ‘thank you’ for working.”

Like many rest homes during COVID-19 Level 4, Enliven’s Cashmere Home in Johnsonville displayed teddy bears in its windows.

Cash mere Home a nd Cashmere Heights Home recreation team leader Linda Lankshear says lots of children loved seeing the bears in the window, but there was one boy in particular who made a special connection.

Three-year-old Lachie started waving at Cashmere Home administrator Sheryl whenever he walked past with mum Anna during the lock down period.

“This went on for quite a while,” Linda says.

Sheryl then drew some activities in chalk on the footpath outside the rest home for Lachie to do as he next walked past.

“The following day Lachie was back with his mum and brought his own chalk to write a thank-you note on the driveway,” Linda says.

A little later, Lachie made a card for Sheryl, thanking her for waving at them whenever they walked past.

For Wellington City Council Alert Level 2 looks different to Alert Level 3.

Most Wellington City Council services and facilities are operating under Alert Level 2.

Alert Level 2 means more freedom with everyday activities, but there are still measures in place to keep the country safe through being able to trace our movements, ensuring public distancing is in place, hygiene practices are followed, and Government guidelines are followed to stop any new transmission of Covid-19 and stamp out any outbreaks.

Life resumes at Alert Level 2

On Wednesday May 13, at 11.59am, New Zealand moved to Alert Level 2.

Not that there was widespread public celebration because significant restrictions remain, not least for those over 70, who are still advised to stay in isolation as much as possible.

But with half a million New Zealanders returning to work and learning institutions, and people once again able to meet family and friends, though only in groups of ten, some normality is returning.

The Independent Herald was out and about over the last week, and captured some of the signs of local people

enjoying our growing, if still limited, freedoms. Needless to say there is a lot of pleasure and relief from the restrictions of lockdown life at Alert Levels 4 and 3.

Our photos also capture some of the remaining limitations. You can resume many of your everyday activities (like some sport, shopping and dining out!) but you have to do so safely using

sanitising, social distancing and tracking protocols.

And there is great relief that funerals can be held, with gatherings of up to 50 people (indoors or outdoors) for funerals and tangihanga permitted, though Ministry permission is required in advance and infection control measures must be in place.

At Levels three and four of the Covid-19 emergency lockdowns, Tomasi and Jamilah Palu spent nearly eight weeks combining working from home and home-schooling two of their three children.

They agree that was “challenging”.

So at lunchtime on Thursday May 14, day one of Level 2, there were five smiling faces at 1841 for their first meal out since March 25.

“This is a treat,” says Jamilah, who has worked for NZ Steel and Tube right though.

Tomasi has been working some long hours as

the director of Rugby Old Boys and University and he agrees.

At 1pm of that first day of relative freedom, they virtually had their choice of tables, the dining room far from full, even allowing for social distancing.

It might take us a while to get used to our new freedoms…

In a large mixing bowl, add flour, cocoa powder and sugar and gently whisk to mix.

Jordan doco a slam dunk The Michael Jordan documentary has helped me through this lockdown.

The 10-part documentary which concluded after five consecutive Monday night’s is nothing short of compulsive viewing.

Whether the ESPN and Netflix documentary ensures Jordan will go down as the best basketballer player of all time is doubtful but

what isn’t in question is just how driven he was to win as a player.

Jordan won six NBA championships in the 90s and was undefeated in the finals themselves.

His brief stint in baseball to fulfill his slain father’s dreams, I’m confident in saying, would have seen him make the major leagues had it not been for a lockout season.

Even the most hardcore Jordan or Chicago Bulls fans would have learnt plenty from the high calibre documentary.

Jordan’s drive to succeed drove him to intense trainings and physical altercations with teammates, outrageous gambling on golf courses with friends and the launching of the Air Jordan shoes which is the reason Nike is the

global force it is today.

Jordan was willing to win at anything by almost any cost.

By his own admission, he does not have a gambling problem, he has a competition problem.

Jordan is a global icon.

The reality is, he’s bigger than basketball and I think that’s just how he would want it.

Don’t get caught out: By Wally Richards There are a few things recently that we need to be ‘Awake To’ and ‘On The Ball’ with.

Currently it’s getting colder and frosts are happening so get your Spray on Frost protection on quickly.

Instructions are: Get the Vapourgard, place bottle in jug of hot water for about 15mins so it pours better. Mix at 15 mils per litre of warm water and spray over the foliage of plants and shrubs/trees you want to protect such as citrus and frost tender plants.

Spray on a sunny day in full sunlight so film dries quicker. One application gives down to minus 3 degrees frost protection within three days of application lasting for three months.

Works a treat for occasional frost every few days but if there is two or more frosts night after night the plants have not recovered fully and extra protection is needed such as frost cloth or sacking etc.

Use all the spray mixed up over other plants to finish off and then rinse out sprayer with warm to hot water spraying some to ensure that its all clean otherwise you may have problems next time you use.

Areas where hard frosts are likely then add to the Vaporgard, Wallys Liquid Copper this gives a greater degree of frost protection because of the layer of copper inside the film.

Don’t spray over produce with the Vaporgard/copper mix as it does not wash off easy because of the Vaporgard film. Ok over citrus fruit as you peel them and don t eat the skins.

Back to the future for train network Chair of the Greater Wellington Regional Council (GWRC) Daran Ponter says it’s “Thunderbirds are go!”

a resilient and reliable service that not only meets the needs of customers but also aids population and economic growth over the next 10-15 years,” Daran adds.

Population growth in the Wellington region has accelerated much faster than forecast over the last five years according to census data, which shows an increase of

35,000 people against an initial forecast of 24,000.

Greater Wellington and Horizons Regional Councils will now continue detailed investigations, including market assessments to better understand options, risks and costs in starting the procurement process for new trains.
