Johnsonville’s Louise Green was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for her efforts in education over 35 years.

February February started with the community rallying around those affected by the Australian Bushfires with many groups raising funds and sending supplies to our cousins across the ditch.

Naylor Love helps students celebrate 50th jubilee Students at Crofton Downs Primary School have a perfect fitting memento to mark the school’s 50th Jubilee thanks to the support of Naylor Love Wellington.

The company has sponsored the printing of over 200 50th Jubilee t-shirts – enough for each pupil and teacher at the school.

“The t-shirts look fabulous and the children will wear them with pride,” principal Justin Potter says.

“We’re very grateful to Naylor Love for helping us mark 50-years of our school, which was formerly known as Chartwell Primary School.”

With the impact of COVID-19, the school has postponed its official

Jubilee celebrations until next year.

Free travel on Metlink on Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve Metlink is providing free travel on Metlink bus and train services on Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve. Customers need only to hop on and hop off, there will be no need to use Snapper cards or train tickets on either day.

On Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve bus services will run to a standard Sunday timetable in Wellington City, Hutt Valley, Porirua and Kapiti, and to a special timetable in Wairarapa.

On Christmas Day train services on the Kapiti, Johnsonville and Hutt Valley lines will run to standard Sunday timetables.

There will be no Melling or Wairarapa Line services.

On New Year’s Eve, train services on the Kapiti, Johnsonville, Hutt Valley and Wairarapa lines will run to standard Saturday timetables. The Melling Line will run hourly from 06:00am to 6:00pm.

East by West ferries are not included in the offer.

The good news is part of a broader package of changes over the holiday period included in a special timetable, and customers should check their Metlink timetables before travelling between Wednesday December 23 and January 10.

Customers can download their own copy of the ‘special timetable’ from Metlink.org.nz.

Metlink would like to help people celebrate the holidays, connect with their friends and family and get home safely using public transport, so we’ve made it as easy and affordable as possible over the two big days of the season,” says Metlink general manager Scott Gallacher.

Karori homicide investigation continues Police continue to make progress in the homicide investigation currently underway in Karori, Wellington.

On Tuesday, Detective Sergeant Steve Wescott said formal identification has taken place and Police can now confirm the victim was

33-year-old Rau Tongia.

Police are following strong lines of enquiry and we are working to hold those responsible to account.

A scene guard remains in place at the Percy Dyett Drive property while Police, alongside ESR examine the scene.

We can confirm Police attended a report of a disorder incident at the property at around 1:25am Sunday morning.

Enquiries into this incident are forming part of the ongoing investigation into Mr Tongia’s death.

The community can expect to

see a significant police presence in the area over the coming days, as we seek to provide reassurance to local residents and speak to potential witnesses.

Police are speaking to a number of people however we do still urge anyone who has any information

that could assist Police enquiries to contact us.

Conservation stories in the spotlight at Zealandia Hannah Shand’s exhibition at Zealandia is set to excite people from now until the end of January.

Conservation Stories Zealandia and Beyond” is a fine art exhibition by Hannah Shand, which highlights the incredible conservation work being done at Zealandia and throughout New Zealand.

Each of Hannah’s artworks tells a story not only of the birds but the people and places that have enabled the species to survive and even thrive. The feature artwork of the exhibition, “Kaka Revival”, celebrates the growing population of kaka in the Wellington

region and is based on a photograph Hannah took at Zealandia.

The initial introduction of kaka to Zealandia was with 14 birds in 2002, and now over 1,000 k k have been banded by their very successful breeding programme.

You can now see kaka around the greater Wellington region; they have even been seen down and around Parliament! Like their cousin the kea, kaka are considered to be one of the world’s most intelligent birds.

One of Hannah’s goals as an artist is to raise awareness and funds for

conservation organisations, and she loves being able to combine her passion for our native birds, photography and drawing, and helping great people who are making a difference in conservation.

Hannah uses reference photos taken by herself and by other bird photographers and conservationists, then painstakingly draws her large-format (usually A1 or A2) artworks in fine tip black pen, rendering every fine detail.

Original and commissioned artworks are available, and many are also available as limited-edition fine art prints.

Hannah Shand’s passion for conservation is on display at Zealandia until the end of January.

It has been a year when I have learned a lot about myself.

It has been a totally new experience this year and not one I want to see agian.

The year has been the biggest challenge for me so a year of massive challenges is what it has been.

I have had it better than some but the whole lockdown thing I will never forget.

It has been a year with the most ups and downs I have ever had.

It has been a tremendous year in the face of a pandemic and I look forward to a much better year in 2021.

In Newlands a gold Subaru Stationwagon parked on Helston Road overnight was broken into.

A window was left open at the top.

Offenders have tampered with the ignition with the intention of stealing the car, but they were unable to start the engine.

A silver Mazda Familia hatchback parked in Batchelor Street overnight was stolen.

A tradesman’s tool belt (with tools) a cell phone charger, a vape and a skateboard were in the car when stolen.

The vehicle has been located at Kokiri Crescent, Waitangirua, Porirua. A white Nissan Vanette parked overnight in Warrington Grove was broken into via

smashed driver’s window.

A glue gun, splicer-humitomo and a fibre probe were stolen.

In Khandallah a burglary occurred at a house in Rangoon Street.

It had been left secure but when a member of the family arrived home the found the place had been thoroughly searched.

A pair of Audio Technica headphones and a cell phone was stolen.

In Churton Park a house in Ellwood Place had its washing line covered in toilet paper and a flower bed trampled.

In Ngauranga an Axon trailer was stolen from a commercial dealer in Jarden Mile.

A brown Commodore saloon was parked briefly near Centennial Highway.

When the driver returned

to the vehicle he found the petrol tank drained.

It had been half full.

In Karori a house in Caldwell Street reported a jemmied front door but no one had entered the house.

Later the resident rang Police to inform them that the damage was likely cased by her daughter slamming the door, and that no offence had taken place.

In Campbell Street the Karori Kids pre-school in Campbell Street was entered by two persons bent on causing trouble.

First they let the chickens out of the coops and then chased them around.

To make their day complete they decorated the building with graffiti.

A red Suzuki Swift hatchback parked overnight in Sunshine Avenue had its rear registration plate stolen.

EYE ON CRIME In Johnsonville a silver Volvo V70 was parked in the driveway of the house in Fraser Avenue.

The vehicle has an unreliable lock so it may not have been secure.

The owner heard a noise and investigated.

He found that his vehicle had been entered and that the reversing camera had been ripped out.

A registration plate was also stolen. A woman went shopping in Countdown and

when she came out noticed that the front registration plate was missing from the car.

It was located on a stolen car parked in Macdonald Crescent, Te Aro, Wellington.

A green Subaru Legacy parked overnight in Haumia Street was stolen.

This is the vehicle that was later recovered in Macdonald Crescent referred to above.

A silver Toyota Caldina parked overnight in a carport

in Fisher Street was broken into.

Sunglasses, a blue tooth FM adapter and a cell phone holder were stolen.

A woman walking through the Mall saw a teenage girl coming towards her.

As she came close the teenager reached out and snatched the hat from her head.

The teenager joined her friends and with the hat on her head which she refused to give it back and claimed

When visiting Johnsonville’s Waitohi Community Hub next visit the breathtaking new artwork called “Waitohi ki tai, Waitohi ki uta”, which celebrates the relationship between the giants of the forest and sea – Kauri and Paraoa (sperm whale).

Artist Angela Kilford (Te Whanau A Kai, Ngati Porou, Ngati Kahungunu) was intrigued to learn that in Maori whakapapa (genealogy) Kauri and Paraoa are brothers who once lived together in the forest.

To learn more about this legend, Angela visited Waipoua Forest in Northland to spend time with experts from Te Roroa iwi.

Waipoua Forest is home to Aotearoa’s oldest and largest kauri, Tane Mahuta, named after the god of the forest

and birds.

Hori Parata tells the story of how when Tane Mahuta was making the kauri tree, he also decided to make Paraoa (sperm whale) and the brothers lived together in the forest and swamps.

“After some time Tane decided to gift Paraoa to Tangaroa (God of the sea), where he lived happily for years. One day Paraoa returned to his brother asking him to join him in the sea.

Kauri said he preferred to stay on the land, so Paraoa gave him some of his skin, which is how he got his unique bark.” Hori Parata, Te Roroa Through this artwork, Angela wanted to connect both the land and sea once again, “maybe future generations will see Kauri and Paraoa brought together again if the

sea levels continue to rise and meet the forest.”

“I also wanted this piece to create a bridge to the nearby artworks in Waitohi.

These are “Wheturangi”, the weavings by Maureen Lander with Te Roopu Raranga o Manaia, and the carved timber panels named He Raukura by Matthew McIntrye Wilson.”

Angela Kilford is an independent artist and designer and works at the College of Creative Arts, Massey University here in Wellington.

Her inspiration comes from Maori concepts and knowledge, where she explores the whakapapa of local ecology and the lesser-known connections between living and non-living entities.

The mural is printed on a type of vinyl that captures the texture of the artwork.

Summer City kicks-off this New Year’s Eve Wellington City Council’s jampacked Summer City programme kicks-off this New Year’s Eve, and with events and activities happening all over the capital there’s something for everyone.

Whairepo Lagoon will be the place to be for New Year’s Eve, as everyone comes together to countdown towards the start of 2021 with live music, kai, entertainment and fireworks.

The whanau-friendly event includes an hour of chart-topping favourites with Electric Avenue until the kids’ countdown at 9pm, then from 10pm Orchestra Wellington will entertain the crowd until midnight.

After a challenging year, Wellington will be looking forward to celebrating the start of a new one, says Mayor Andy Foster.

“New Year’s Eve at Whairepo Lagoon is the perfect time for all of us to come together in a celebration of community. As we welcome in 2021 with an exciting summer season of events and activities there is so much to look forward to.”

From 12 January, Wellington’s iconic Gardens Magic festival brings three weeks of free music and a magical light display to Botanic Garden Ki Paekaka. Kids’ Magic will entertain the littlies on Sat 30 January with wh naufriendly fun in the Dell.

Pasifika brings a taste of the Pacific to the capital on Saturday 23 January, and the new Welly Weekend event rounds out the Wellington anniversary holiday with fireworks, circus performances,

kids’ activities, live music and food trucks on the city’s waterfront.

Our national day Te Ra o Waitangi will be commemorated with kai, kapa haka and waiata for the whole whanau to enjoy on Saturday 6 February. The Maoriland Film Festival will present a programme of short films and feature film Poi E the night before in Waitangi Park.

“Wellington ki Poneke is open for everyone with months of events and activities celebrating and supporting our local creative community and culture and embracing the diversity of the capital,” says the Mayor.

The art of growing seedlings: By Wally Richards To obtain new plants we either buy seeds and germinate them ourselves or we buy seedlings/plants and grow them on from there.

Buying seedlings of vegetables and flower plants for our gardens is a quick way to get plants established and can save about a month of time compared to germinating seeds yourself.

There are many pitfalls in buying seedlings of vegetables and in some case flowering plants.

Summer flowering plants which are tender to cold, wet frosty conditions should only be planted when the weather is settled going into summer.

You would not plant summer annuals in autumn unless you climate is suitable with mild winters.

Instead you would in January to March period seek out winter flowering plants and get them into your flower beds as soon as possible so they are well established as winter comes.

Daylight hours is the prime factor for growth then food, moisture and temperature the secondary factors.

The same applies to winter vegetables they must be planted between January and March to be successful and ready for harvesting in winter.

Plant them later and already the shortening day light hours means little growth and they will sit and sulk in winter to get a growth burst in the spring and go to seed.

Correctly timed winter crops means that the plants will be mature as winter strikes and the cold conditions acts as a giant fridge holding them nicely till you are ready to harvest them.

Leeks for those that love them should be planted now as seeds in a very rich

nursery bed in the garden.

They will germinate and grow to about pencil thin over the next couple of months and be ready to lift about February to plant out in very rich soil.

They are hungry feeders and you can keep throwing liquid manures at them as a side dressing so you will obtain big leek plants in the middle of winter.

Celery is another gross feeder and if you want those big juicy stalks you need to feed well and keep well-watered.

All vegetables that are grown from seed, where they are going to mature, will be superior plants to those that are transplanted.

Some plants of root crops such as carrots, parsnips, salsify and radish should always be grown directly from seed; where they are going to mature.

Other vegetables that have large seeds which are easy to handle should also be direct sown; peas, beans, pumpkins etc.

When we direct sow ourselves we thin the plantings to give the best plants room to develop.

This is best done by snipping the inferior plants off at ground level.

Now when you buy vegetable seedlings it is important that you do not buy those plants that are already large because those plants have filled their growing space and are becoming root bound and can dry out quickly which puts them into stress.

Stressed plants are afraid for their lives and will want to flower and go to seed as quickly as possible as that is their end game anyway.

If you are buying flowering plants or vegetable plants that flower and fruit such as tomatoes then the bigger the better as you want them to flower as soon as possible.

If you are not aware of this fact you may buy these big seedlings, take them home, plant them out to find within a few weeks they

have bolted and gone to seed. A waste of time and money.

Look only for the nice small young seedlings, fresh out of the growing nursery and still likely hardened off to a degree.

When I buy cells or punnets I look for those ones that not only have all the seedlings that they are supposed to have (no losses which indicates already they have not been properly looked after) and ones that are over-seeded having more than the normal 6 plants or so.

If when you get the trays home and before you sit them on their meat trays to grow on a bit plunge the packs into a bucket of water and watch them bubble.

This ensures that all the mix they are in is wet and ready to accept later waterings.

Place them in the meat trays.

Now when you are ready to transplant them once again plunge them into a bucket of water.

This will allow them to slide out of the cell pack or in the case of punnets make it easier and less root disturbance when you separate the seedlings.\ If you have a cell with two or three vegetable seedling in then when soaking wet you are able to separate them with less root disturbance and have more to plant out.

Mrs Chippy gets visitors

By Gerald Rillstone With some summer weather at last the Gregory kids took the opportunity to explore Karori Cemetery with their dad and made a special stop at the memorial to Mrs Chippy, a male ship’s cat, who accompanied Sir Ernest Shackleton’s Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition of 1914–1917.

Mrs Chippy, a tiger-striped tabby, was taken on board the ship used by the expedition’s Weddell Sea party, Endurance, as a ship’s cat by carpenter and master shipwright Harry “Chippy” McNish (“Chippy” being a colloquial British term for a carpenter).The cat acquired its name because, once aboard, it followed McNish around like an overly attentive wife.

One month after the ship set sail forAntarctica it was discovered that, despite her name, Mrs Chippy was actually a male.

By that time, however, the name had stuck.

After the Endurance became trapped in pack ice and was destroyed, Shackleton decided that Mrs Chippy and five of the sled dogs that had been carried on board would not survive and he was put down.

McNish died, destitute, in Wellington, New Zealand, in September 1930, and was buried with full naval honours in an unmarked grave. The New Zealand Antarctic Society placed a headstone on the grave in 1959. To this they added a life-size bronze statue of Mrs Chippy in 2004, funded through public subscription,

The Basin of brilliance and horror That was not your Dad’s West Indies.

For two days, I sat in the RA Vance stand at Wellington’s Basin Reserve recently struggling to work out whether the Black Caps team was crushing the West Indies or whether the men from the Caribbean had decided they wanted to be somewhere warmer.

Make no mistake, this is a golden period of New Zealand test cricket that even the most casual Kiwi fan should try to catch a glimpse of before it finishes.

However, the West Indies were

hopeless at times.

In both tests, their captain Jason Holder won the toss on green, seamer-friendly pitches and elected to bowl.

Both times, his bowlers were not full enough, nor accurate enough and the fielding was worse than a social grade encounter with plastic bats on a Monday night.

Henry Nicholls cashed-in though.

His highest test score, despite being dropped four times throughout, at least keeps Devon Conway waiting for his baggy

black cap for a wee while longer you would think.

The batsmen weren’t much better.

Too loose, lacking footwork and patience, they were ruthlessly exposed by the best quartet of fast bowlers New Zealand has had at any one time.

Trent Boult, Tim Southee, Neil Wagner and young-gun Kyle Jamieson proved how bowling in tandem can be so effective.

As someone who was too young to see it, I have heard stories of the great 1980s West Indian teams

which revolutionised test cricket in that era.

Some 35 to 40 years later, it looks like much of that historical equity is now gone.

New Zealand deserves a lot of credit.

Even without skipper Kane Williamson for the second test, they barely skipped a beat and undoubtedly will be looking forward to bigger and better challenges as the season progresses.

A curious thing to come out of the series was Jamieson’s impressive technique with the bat.

He could be a No 7 for New Zealand and allow a genuine spinner to bat lower down the order.

The two questions to ponder are, firstly who is that spinner?

Because I don’t know and 2 as the heir apparent to the new ball once Boult and Southee retire, is Jamieson best served to split his time between bat and ball in the hopes of becoming a test all rounder or is he best served to become a genuine strike bowler.

Only time will tell.

Johnsonville make 50-over final

Johnsonville will meet Taita in the premier 50-over competition final on January 10.

Johnsonville needed to beat Upper Hutt United to make the decider and did so by 107 runs at Alex Moore Park, on Saturday.

Batting first, Johnsonville was in early trouble at five for two in the second over, but captain Rakitha Weerasundara and Devan Vishwaka steadied the ship with a 78-run third wicket partnership.

When Vishvaka departed for 53, it allowed Hareen Silva to play with more freedom and accelerate the run rate.

Silva hit a run-a-ball, unbeaten 79 and found good support from Josh Mann who blazed his way to 59 off 34 balls including five boundaries and four sixes.

The lusty hitting allowed Johnsonville to get to 267 for eight.

It proved a total far too big for Upper Hutt United who never threatened.

Jeremy Benton was involved in the run out of both openers and wickets continued to tumble as the visitors eventually succumbed for 160.

Hayden Smith managed three for 28 while Zac Ringrose and Kevinda Weerasundara each added two wickets.

Rakitha says he was very pleased with the result despite the poor start. ”We knew if we could lay a platform early and have wickets in hand that we have guys lower-down the order who can really finish the innings off well. ”Even with our poor start with just one win after four weeks, we knew if we could get it together that we were capable of making the final.”

Rakitha says Taita have been the best team all season and they will be a tough prospect. ”They deserve to be favourites and we’ll be planning over the Christmas break how we can chip-away at them, ” he says.

The Johnsonville premier cricket team will contest the premier 50-over final on January 10.

Pirates putting baseball on the map

Northland’s Wellington City Pirates baseball team is offering kids in the northern and eastern suburbs another sporting opportunity.

Club president, Clayton Willocks says numbers have been on the improve this season.

“During term four, we established

a hugely popular Midweek Development Competition, based at Ian Galloway Park with over 50 kids playing.

“It’s the first time baseball has been played on this side of Wellington City and it’s been a resounding success.”

“Our club was originally established in 2018 as PK Pirates

Baseball, based in the eastern suburbs. We started small, with 28 players in the 2018/19 season and 25 in 2019/20.

“This allowed the Club to enter a 13U and 16U team in the Wellington Baseball Association weekend competition. But, while the sport of baseball was growing in New Zealand, our club wasn’t. We knew we

needed to do something different to attract more players and get baseball thriving in Wellington City.

“In July 2020, a small group of committed Wellingtonians devised a plan to revitalise the Club and grow the game in Wellington City.

“This plan laid the foundations for revitalising our club. Under the leadership of Clayton Willocks

(who represented NZ in the NZ Black Sox world championship winning softball teams in 2000 and 2004), we established a passionate committee with a goal to give more Wellington kids the opportunity to play baseball.” Wellington Mayor Andy Foster was part of the final night last week as the guest of honour.
