At just 17, Karori’s Josie Morrison’s volunteer work in her community is unrivalled.

The Samuel Marsden Collegiate Year 12 student was a gold award winner at the Karori Youth Awards last week.

She says while her free time is scarce, the hectic nature of her schedule is extremely rewarding.

Josie thrives in busy volunteer lifestyle Continued from page 1.

Josie coaches the newbies at the Pirates Swim Club on a Tuesday night, is a lifeguard on patrol at Wellington beaches during the summer and she leads the student initiative Winter Project which collects and donates winter items for those in need during the colder months.

Josie also fundraised for Bellyful, which delivers meals for families with babies and young children.

“I quite like being busy,” she says.

“Sometimes it gets a bit much but it certainly keeps things interesting.”

“I think about what the project is and what it means to me.

“If it’s something that I’m interested in and I find cool then I try to get involved.”

Josie says the rewards for volunteering are clear.

“When I see people’s reactions, their smiles, their happiness knowing that I’ve contributed to do something positive to help them out.

“I know when we met the kids who we helped with the Winter Project, it was great to know we did something to help.”

Josie says she was surprised to be given the top award.

“I wasn’t expecting this,” she says.

“It puts into perspective the work that I do.

“It’s very special.”

She says even a small community-minded gesture can have a big impact.

“It’s important people try to do what they can, little things add up and really help in the community, especially in a place like Karori.”

Kallan Reid also earned a gold award for his commitment to young people, with his voluntary work with the Karori Baptist Church.

The 20-year-old says it is always nice to help young people when they are going through a challenging stage in life. ”There are always so many questions when you’re growing up so I know it’s always a positive when you see someone understand a key message.”

Karori West Normal School’s Olive Smith received a gold award for academic improvement.

Karori West Scout Group’s Kate Bluck received a gold award for her contribution to young people.

The group award for services to the community went to the St Theresa’s Library Group, who assisted in establishing a new library at the school.

Carlin Fairley also earned a gold award for her services to young people at the Karori Youth Centre.

Newlands Fire Brigade finds temporary home

The Newlands Volunteer Fire Brigade will be temporarily housed at another location in Newlands while a decision is made on a permanent location, Fire and Emergency New Zealand’s Te Ūpoko (lower North Island region) manager Bruce Stubbs announced yesterday..

“The brigade has a long history of service to the community and Fire and Emergency has been very keen to continue to support it. The decision means the brigade’s members will continue to be able to contribute to Newlands and the wider Wellington community,” Mr Stubbs says.

The brigade’s temporary new home will be Fire and Emergency’s ICT Hub in Hurring Place, Newlands, which is 1.4km from the existing fire station.

“The building is more modern than the current station, meets our

seismic standards, has plenty of space and will require relatively little modification to meet the brigade’s needs.”

The decision to relocate the station clears the way for the redevelopment of Newlands Park by the Wellington City Council.

Site works are scheduled to begin shortly.

When the Wellington City Council first announced its plans for the park, Fire and Emergency indicated its preferred option was to co-locate the brigade at the nearby Johnsonville Fire Station.

Mr Stubbs says that option remains on the table, but suggestions have also been put forward for a joint community or emergency services hub in Newlands.

“To date there have not been any indications that other organisations will be in a position to partner with us in the next 10 years or so, but we will properly consider all the options before

Maori Laguage Week celebrated

Johnsonville School took part with more than one million people around the country to speak te reo Maori at noon on Monday for Maori Language Week.

Johnsonville School students were part of more than one million people taking up the challenge on Monday of using te reo Māori for the single, largest celebration of the language in history.

Johnsonville school sang their song Waitohi E. Covid-19 restrictions put a stop to the annual Māori Language Week parades,so the Māori Language Commission instead encouraged people to use the reo in some way, shape or form at noon, and the nation responded, with one in five New Zealanders registering to take part.

The Māori Language Commission has paid tribute to more than one million New Zealanders who made history by coming together across the country and the world to celebrate te reo Māori at the

same time on Monday.

“This is the largest, single celebration of te reo Māori in history. We have never had this many people celebrating our language together at the same time,” said Māori Language Commissioner, Professor Rawinia Higgins.

“We would like to pay tribute to those across Aotearoa and the world, our smallest towns to our largest cities, our elderly to our babies who joined us today.”

The commission’s Māori Language Moment marked the day and hour when a small group of language champions presented the Māori Language Petition to parliament in 1972. The sign-up website saw more than 500,000 people join in the last three days. The last hour before 12pm saw the commission’s websites and online Zuimano struggle to cope.

Wellington City Council’s car share policies are designed to encourage the use of car sharing as a flexible, low carbon option that sits alongside public transport modes.

With more than 7200 Wellingtonians belonging to car sharing schemes, car sharing is fast becoming the new normal for Wellington.

Data from 2019/20 provided by Wellington’s two car sharing providers, MEVO and Cityhop, shows that across the two schemes, one car share vehicle now replaces 11 private vehicles, there has been a 170% increase in membership, almost 50,000 trips taken, and 70,000kg of CO2 from car share trips has been offset.

Strong interest in Central Library consultation A six-week public consultation to gather Wellingtonians’ views on restoring the Central Library service in the heart of the city has ended with significant input from residents.

“With more than 1360 submissions and counting, Wellingtonians have shown we are passionate about the future of our Central Library,” says Wellington City Council Mayor Andy Foster.

“I want to thank the many people and organisations who took the time to share their views on the future of the Central Library, and our staff for facilitating this discussion.

“Council is now looking forward to hearing the supporting oral submissions later this month, as well as seeing the survey results and more technical information. We are listening very carefully to our community, and all this feedback will help guide the decisions we need to take in October.”

Receiving such a strong number of submissions, and with a few more expected to arrive by mail today, Libraries portfolio holder Councillor Fleur Fitzsimons says we will get a clear picture on what Wellingtonians want and need from a library service in the city.

“From what I’ve been told, many submissions include additional wellconsidered and detailed responses from both a community and individual viewpoints, which is fantastic. We will also have the benefit of the views of people who joined the recent events in our communities, with the Planning for Growth team.”

The final submissions are being collated by an external research agency, along with the themes collected from public comments on the Council and Wellington City Libraries social media posts during the submission period.

Wellington City Councillors will

also be presented the results of an independent representative survey of 1000 residents from the Wellington Region.

Councillors will hear from approximately 60 individuals or organisations who will start providing oral submissions on Tuesday 22 September.

A Council report will outline the results of the consultation and engagement process, together with updated costs of the options for the Council to debate at a Strategy and Policy Committee Meeting planned for Thursday 22 October 2020. This meeting is open to the public and will be live streamed on the Council’s YouTube page.

As the agenda for this meeting has not yet been set, please visit the Council website closer to the meeting date to confirm the time it will be presented. We will publish a copy of the Council reports on the Council website by Friday 16 October.

Public interest in the future of the Wellington Central Library remains high.

Students’ creativity celebrated

Judge Tina Makereti with winner of the 2020 Katherine Mansfield Short Story Award for secondary school students, Nadezhda Macey.

The winner of the 2020 Katherine Mansfield Short Story Award was announced on last week at an event held for finalists at the National Library of New Zealand. The annual competition is open to Year 12 and 13 students in the Wellington region. Nadezhda Macey, a Year 13 student at Wellington High School, won with her story ‘Matahiwi’.

A shortlist of 11 finalists from ten local high schools was judged by Tina Makereti, an acclaimed writer and a Senior Lecturer at the International Institute of Modern Letters at Victoria University of Wellington.

Speaking at the awards, Makereti noted, “It’s always exciting to encounter new voices. The stories I have had the privilege of reading are full of complexity and it’s been a real pleasure to encounter them.”

Makereti said the winning story stood out thanks to its vivid prose. “From the first line, ‘Matahiwi, the switch edge blade of your eye, glinting from the hill’s ridge’, this

story held me with its compelling voice. It has otherworldly elements but is also wholly familiar. I’m excited to see what this writer does next.”

Cadence Chung, a Year 12 Wellington High School student, was highly commended for her story ‘The End of the World’, as was Avni Labhsetwar, Year 13 from Newlands College, with ‘Hidden Sacrifices’.

“It’s never easy to judge when every story has something special to offer,” said Makereti. “The main thing I would want our young writers to take away from this experience is to keep writing and to do it for the joy of the process rather than for the outcome.”

The annual award has a $500 cash prize and is made possible by the Gay Saker Bequest. Gay Saker was a Wellington teacher of English and reading for over 20 years and a great admirer of the writing of Katherine Mansfield.

Penny Roy, who grew up in Karori, is now a teacher by trade but has been recognised by the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) for the role she played in mentoring officers at the Afghan National Army Officer Academy in 2018 and 2019.

What better way to celebrate four decades of tasting great wine than to have Wellingtons best known champion of the grape present a special selection from his own cellar.

And that's what they did to celebrate the 40th birthday of the Cellar Club in Johnsonville with Alan Evans presenting a range of wines from his own collection.

It was, some say, one of the most prestigious tastings in the 40 years of the club’s existence.

Alan joined the club in 1987 and has held the roles of Editor 10 years and President 8 years and was made a life member in 2010 and still attends the dinners and the occasional tasting.

He is also a Past President of the Magnum Society that was a Wellington-based wine group founded in 1972. “We buy wines that we will be drinking in about ten years time or whatever the drinking window is he says which is a lot of fun and a bit of a gamble too,” Alan says.

“We have tastings going up to around 2034.”

He is also the cellar master for the Tinakori branch of the International Beef Steak and Burgundy Club.

Alan’s love of wine was a natural progression, he says, from an interest in ciders in the 1960s to the wines of Henderson in the mid-1970s. He has an extensive temperature-controlled cellar and over the years has developed a love of European wines which he augments with premium NZ and Australian varietals.

He says these days he has the luxury of having access to plethora of online reviews so he has a

fair idea of what a wine is going to be like before he tastes it.

“I do a lot of reading about what's new and what to expect from the wine and I am not as surprised as I used to be but there are still surprises,” he says.

Alan says the Troplong Mondot they were tasting for the celebration, according to reviews, is best consumed around 2020 to 2022 and he has tried it and it is perfect.

Mine is the Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard. It’s really interesting and exciting fantasy writing.

I really love the Percy Jackson Series. It has a lot of excitment and adventure and shows an ordinary boy can do magnificent things if he puts his mind to it.

If I had to choose one it would probaly have to be Marissa Meyer’s Lunar Chronicles. It is very exciting and there are a lot of unexpected things happening.

The Remarkable Journey of Coyote Sunrise by Dan Geimenhart. It was very good and showed you couldn’t run away from the past.

Hetty Feather by Jacquelin Wilson. It is a very realistic story and very empathetic.

Mine is the Artemis Fowl Series by Eion Colfer. It’s about a family of criminals and I loved the adventure in it.

St Marks students plot sustainable future The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a huge disruption in our children’s education. Yet education is key to our future.

It unlocks opportunities, contributes to tolerant societies and is a key driver of a sustainable future.

The Year 8 students at St Mark’s School have been putting all of their learning, skills and knowledge from school so far into a final project, based on creating a better and more sustainable future. Their projects are based entirely around the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals, 17 goals which have been agreed upon by the United Nations to work towards a healthier planet.

The students have applied these global issues on a local level, looking at what’s happening in Wellington.

The St Mark’s students have each chosen one goal that they are very passionate about and have formed collaborative groups based on these shared passions.

They have organised meetings with experts such as a local MP, an architect and local charities, and

they have conducted market research in order to further their knowledge of their chosen topics.

Some of their exciting projects include: • How Covid-19 has impacted local businesses in Wellington • An investigation into homeless shelters and how we can improve them • Gender equality in New Zealand • Research into our waterways and ecosystems, including taking action to ensure they stay clean and healthy • Poverty in Wellington and the creation of sustainable, recycled vegetable gardens to help eradicate hunger.

Once they had applied their research skills, students collaborated to develop ideas and plans for taking action about these issues. Their action includes advocacy, lifestyle changes, participation and social entrepreneurship. They are now preparing a community Exhibition to showcase their projects. This will take place on Monday September 21 from, 4:30-6:30pm at St Mark’s School.

Karori drop-off point Sometimes it feels like the barriers to disposing of our waste properly are too high, and although we know what we should do, we find it difficult to put our best intentions into action. The Karori Community Centre in conjunction with TerraCycle, Wellington Scrap Metals and Wellington City Council are supporting a new community initiative to reduce these barriers. The Karori Community Centre (KCC) will now host a drop-off station for stationery items, and metal bottle tops and household batteries so these items can be recycled or disposed of correctly.

The idea was sparked during a casual conversation, between Naomi Lane and Zofia Skrzynski, prior to a Karori Normal School meeting, where Zofia described the inconvenience of travelling into the city to drop off non-kerb side recycling items. Those present

reflected that it would be fantastic to have a drop off point in Karori.

The idea of creating a drop-off point was then floated to the Manager of the KCC (Kay Webster) who enthusiastically supported it and felt it would be a logical extension of what the Centre already does, in acting as a drop off point for the Karori Food Bank, Boomerang Bags and Sports Bank.

Members of the public can now go into the KCC to drop off their metal bottle tops (i.e. from wine/beer bottles and jars – inners removed) and plastic stationery items (felts, permanent markers, whiteboard pens, and plastic pens) for recycling. And household batteries will be collected at the KCC office for correct disposal.

Wellington Samaritans Annual Street Appeal The Wellington Samaritans will hold their annual appeal on the streets of Wellington next Friday and Saturday.

Samaritans 24/7 helpline offers confidential, non-religious and non-judgmental support to anyone who may be feeling depressed, lonely or suicidal.

Samaritans is a charity that receives no Government funding and relies solely on grants and donations to operate.

Samaritans vision is that “fewer people die by suicide”. Donations received at the Appeal will help fund all of the costs associated with running the free nationwide helpline, 0800 72 66 66.

Funds are needed so Samaritans can continue to answer calls from anyone that is struggling to cope or contemplating suicide.

Mr John Meeuwsen, the Chairperson of Wellington Samari-

tans, says the service is needed by many in the community.

“Kiwis from all walks of life are struggling to cope right now.

Someone you know of or care about may be in distress.

“We need donations to be able to answer their calls.

“Every call to our helpline costs money, and when we are receiving over 23,000 calls each year, that soon adds up.

“We need to raise $15,000

from this Appeal to maintain our service.”

New Zealand has one of the highest rates of suicide in the world and suicide is a leading cause of death. Provisional suicide statistics for deaths reported to the Coroner show that in New Zealand, 654 people took their own lives in the 2019 / 2020 year.

Physical distancing measures conclude on Metlink Services

Mihi Smith took to the steps of Parliament yesterday to raise awareness for the suicide app she has had developed after her son almost succeeded in taking his own life.

Called MyWell or Tooko Oranga is free and enables people to choose five contacts that automatically receive a text message saying "I am unwell, please contact me," when the user presses a button.

The idea for the app came after her son told her he wanted to reach out but found the words were stuck in his throat.

She heard similar stories from the whānau and patients at the mental health ward in Auckland her son was committed to.

"What was clear was our whānau didn't have a voice when they felt unwell, they couldn't voice that unwellness so the app was actually created to replace that voice.

"If they can't speak it's up to the contacts to say, 'We love you, we care for you, tell me what I can do, I'm coming over to see you,” Mihi says.

She says it was important if people were contacted through the app that they reached out to the person in distress.

Mihi Smith is a mother on a mission to spread awareness of her free app designed to help prevent suicide.

"Grab their hand, hold on to them, try and get in touch with them because it is a preventative tool, that's what it is, it's a mental health suicide prevention tool but not just the suicide - when you are feeling unwell, before it escalates to that stage, Mihi says.

Mihi who lives in Tokoroa and works at the YMCA says she is paying off the $25,000 it cost her and her husband to build the app and what other money she has goes toward petrol so she can travel the country promoting it to who ever will listen.

The Government expects all New Zealanders to wear face coverings on public transport with exemptions only for school services, children under 12 years old, and passengers with disability and health concerns.

“We’re working with our operators right now to get the message out to all Metlink staff and we’ll be updating our messaging across all Metlink channels and social media but the message from the Prime Minister is very clear; physical distancing in no longer required on services but

passengers must continue to follow all other alert level 2 advice,” says Scott Gallacher.

Passengers should continue to follow the Government’s level 2 advice which includes logging their journeys using QR codes and the COVID-19 app, practicing good personal hygiene by washing and sanitising their hands before and after travelling, sneezing and coughing into their elbows and avoiding public transport completely if they are sick.

“We have to stay vigilant. It is paramount to the safety of the com-

munity that we all follow the advice of the Government. We are all in this together and the Government is calling upon all of us to make the most appropriate personal choices during these extraordinary times.

“Thank you for your ongoing cooperation and patience, as we work together to keep our community safe and healthy,” adds Scott Gallacher.

Artists weave magic for Johnsonville Library Through a pandemic, long distance learning and restricted access to resources, Maureen Lander’s new artwork, in collaboration with Te Roopu Raranga o Manaia, a Wellington harakeke weaving group, has been installed in Johnsonville Library over the weekend.

The Wellington City Council commissioned site-specific artwork Whetūrangi started its journey earlier in the year, then the impacts of COVID-19 meant access to flax was limited, and Maureen who lives in Whangamata had to continue workshops online.

“Following lockdown we were constrained, firstly by not being able to work and learn together, and secondly by not having easy access to suitable flax with enough leaf length to fit the required architectural dimensions.

“Unless we had our favourite varieties growing in our own gardens we had to make do with what we could find on walks during lockdown.

“Te Roopu Raranga O Manaia has been a wonderful group to work with. They took on all the challenges I gave them at every level. From the start they continued to weave through lockdown using notes and photographs I provided electronically as guidance. We held zoom sessions in place of physical workshops and it was very much a case of learning by sharing helpful tips with each other.”

This new addition will be a big feature of the cultural environment as it welcomes visitors at the entrance.”

Born in Rawene, Hokianga, Dr Maureen Lander (Ngāpuhi, Te Hikutu, Pākehā) is a leading exponent of raranga (weaving) and installation

art. She has exhibited, photographed, written about and taught Māori art since 1986, and was awarded a New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) in 2020 for her services to Māori art.

The installation of this artwork by such a well-recognised artist is a major coup for the Waitohi site says Māori Partnership portfolio lead Councillor Jill Day. “Wheturangi is a wonderful example of a collaborative community approach with a strong emphasis on tikanga Māori.

“While this was the best possible outcome, we urge anyone going into the bush for any length of time to hope for the best but always prepare for the worst.

“That means planning your route, checking the weather, seeking local knowledge if you’re unfamiliar with the terrain, and telling someone where you’re going and when you’ll be back.

“It’s also vital that you take the

right supplies – clothing for changeable conditions, food, an appropriate form of communication, and GPS or offline maps.

“Offline or paper maps are particularly important in places that aren’t clearly signposted or have poor cell coverage, and it’s also worth considering a personal locator beacon, which can tell rescuers exactly where you are.

Author creates during Covid

Tawa author Philip Marshall was happily living in the Philippines prior to Covid but tripped and fell seriously damaging his shoulder.

During a short stint in a Philippines hospital Philip soon realised he would have to come home to have his shoulder seen to properly and have a replacement joint fitted.

It was during his stay here that Covid struck and he was unable to get back to his partner and their house in the plantation she owns.

With time on his hands at home in Tawa Philip got stuck into writing Secret Pleasure, a book about Victor Parkman a self proclaimed Man of Destiny, Veritable Emanation of the Overlord, and Supreme Leader of the World for a Thousand Years, and now rules New Zealand as its beloved leader.

“We collected three bags of rubbish, weighing around 29kg and two recycling bags.”

He says the types of rubbish varied with takeaway packaging, towels, underwear and PPE along Burma Road to dog poop, plastic water bottles, glass bottles, cans, polystyrene and paper possibly from recycling bins in Broadmeadows.

Ray says they found the majority of the rubbish was near Onslow College, Raroa Intermediate School and the Kindergarten which was disappointing implying that children are not taught to avoid littering.

Containing twenty-one short stories, Secret Pleasure is the final volume in the Star Children trilogy.

His writing is varied and among the eight books Philip has published is one about his memories of growing up in Wainuiomata. A book he has dedicated to his granddaughter who he says has had a totally different up bringing than he had.

“I wanted her to get the type of book I wish my grandparents had

written so I knew more about what their life was like,” he says.

Philip grew up in Wainuiomata during the 50s and 60s and has written about is experience there also.

Respite options with Enliven in Wellington Enliven is reminding Wellington residents that short-term respite options are available for local elders.

Respite care gives family carers a chance to take a break or go on holiday, while their loved ones stay with Enliven.

Enliven has three rest homes in Wellington – Huntleigh Home in Karori, Cashmere Home in Johnsonville and Longview Home in Tawa.

Elders who choose respite care at an Enliven home get to participate in all the activities run at the home, and of course all their meals are provided, says Enliven

GARDENING THIS WEEK Growing from seed: By Wally Richards There are so many people growing vegetables now that the nurseries cannot keep up with the demand so we are seeing a lot of baby seedlings that are not long germinated for sale.

There is good aspects of this as the plants will not have been stressed which can make them go to seed prematurely.

You take these baby seedling home and put them in a sunny sheltered place outside or into a glasshouse if you have one.

Don’t overwater, this is most important but do not let them dry out either.

You can put a meat tray under the punnet and after giving them a small drink (carefully) place some water into the tray. When the tray is dry then repeat.

Too much water will make the seedlings soft and can cause rots in the roots and losses. You can also look at growing your own seedlings from seeds.

With flowers and vegetables you have a far greater range from seed selection than you do when compared to buying seedlings.

This is especially so when you have a good garden centre with a large seed range or a mail order catalogue such as Kings Seeds and Egmont Seeds.

I browsed the seed stands recently in a store which had two brands of seeds and was surprised about how expensive some seeds had become.

The expensive seeds were mainly hybrid types and the reasonably priced seeds were open pollinated.

The difference between the two types is that the hybrid seeds have been specially bred for certain characteristics in the mature plant where open pollinated

are seeds that have been collected from mature plants that have pollinated naturally.

Hybrid seed grown plants tend to be uniform in growth, all mature about the same time and very similar in appearance and attributes.

These are the seeds most commercial growers use in vegetable and flower production. They are great for the market gardener that requires a field of cabbages all of which are ready to harvest at the same time.

For the home gardener they are a waste of time and space as most of us can’t eat a dozen cabbages in a week or so.

We gardeners want our cabbages to reach maturity several days apart so we obtain the full benefit of our efforts and not have lots of waste.

The cheaper seeds give us this as they are open pollinated and will be staggered in their maturity. Besides when it comes to vegetables the open pollinated will likely have far better flavour when grown naturally and have less disease problems.

It is from these plants you can allow one to go to seed and collect your own seed for future plantings.

For the more unusual plants that you would like to grow you can expect to pay a little more whether they are open pollinated or hybrids.

When you buy some types of seeds such as lettuce, you will not want to sow all the seeds, in fact you may only sow a dozen seeds each time.

The remaining seeds should be then stored in their original packet and put inside a seal-able glass jar and placed in the fridge.

There they will keep for many months

and even years with little loss of vitality.

The fridge storage of even unopened packets is a good move as this gives the seeds a false winter so when you bring them out to germinate they will think it’s spring and strike quicker.

Use either old punnets or seedling trays to germinate your seeds in dependent on the number of seeds you wish to strike. Don’t worry about the fancy seed raising mixes as a reasonable potting mix is far better and cheaper.

Fill the tray to about two thirds full with the potting mix and then with a kitchen sieve sprinkle a layer of the finer particles of the mix over this.

Next evenly as possible sprinkle the number of seeds you wish to germinate. If you want 6 plants to plant out then sow 12 seeds. You can later on select the 6 best plants for growing on.

The other seedlings can be discarded or kept in the tray to grow on for a future planting. Next with the aid of the sieve, sprinkle a little more of the mix to just about cover the seeds.

Many seeds prefer a little light to germinate well, so don’t cover too much.

Then take a one litre trigger sprayer and place a 20 mils of Magic Botanic Liquid into it with water. Spray this over the mix and seeds to wet the mix.

The tray then should be placed on a heat pad or in a warm situation to aid germination. Ensure that the mix is kept moist and not allowed to dry out, misting with the sprayer two or more times a day.

The tray should be in good light but not strong direct sunlight.

Germination time varies from plant to plant and often the packet may give an indication of the number of

This is the time that many gardeners make mistakes and losses occur.

Embryo seedlings need overhead light as soon as they appear or within at least 12 odd hours. If not, the seedlings will stretch to the natural light and become weak making them vulnerable to dampening off and diseases.

The tray should be moved to a glasshouse bench where it is lightly shaded from strong direct sun.

If you do not have a glasshouse then with either an old draw or a polystyrene box and a sheet of glass you have an excellent propagation unit.

Place the trays of freshly germinated seedlings in the box with the sheet of glass over it but slightly raised off the box with ice cream sticks or similar at each corner, to allow heat and moisture to escape.

The raised glass should not be too high so as to leave an easy entrance for slugs or snails. The box should be in an area that only gets early or late sun.

Not direct sun from say 10am to 2pm.

Ensure the mix is kept moist by misting. In the box or glasshouse the plants will grow straight up with sturdy growth.

If there is any danger of slugs or snails getting to the seedlings then spray them and the surrounding area with Liquid Copper and Raingard.

Once your seedlings have reached the first true leaf stage and are big enough, they should be carefully pricked out and planted into small pots or spaced apart in punnets or cell packs.

Before doing this spray the seedlings with Vaporgard and leave for an day or two. Then water the tray well so the mix is very wet. This means there will be less root disturbance when you lift them out.

The seedlings can be transplanted into pots or trays using purchased compost.

When the plants are of suitable size to plant out then spray them once again with Vaporgard and leave them for three days before planting out.

Holly Kelman celebrates 100th game This story is re-published with the permission of College Sport Wellington.

Onslow College First XI captain Holly Kelman only found out about her milestone in the build-up to last Wednesday’s final regular season Regional Premier 1 Capital Football Trophy league match against Paraparaumu.

“It was a big surprise, they just announced it when we were all together and warming up for our game,” she said. “I got given a little dinner plate with some words written on it marking my 100 games, I think they will be presenting something else to me at our prize giving.”

Holly went on to celebrate her 100th match by scoring a goal in her team’s 6-2 win over Paraparaumu College, to book a place in this Wednesday’s semi-finals.

Holly, who plays central midfield for her school team and right or left back for her club team Wellington United, has been in the Onslow College First XI throughout her college school career, only missing three matches in that time. Can she recall the missed games?

“I think the first one was in year nine at tournament when I didn’t play the last game as I was injured, the second time was when our game got moved to a Monday but I work on Mondays and couldn’t play and the last one was recently when I went to a university open day in Dunedin.”

Holly said there have been many highlights over the past five years, but one that sticks out was Onslow’s

“In year 10 our school went to the Rotorua tournament at Winter Tournament Week and we won the tournament. That was a special week and cool win for our team and to be part of.”

This was the third tier Maurice Hulme Tournament. Onslow beat Waikato Diocesan 4-3 in the final that went to extra time. The following year they qualified for the Lotto Premier Girls tournament. Last year they were ninth in the Maurice Tournament, behind winners Waikato Dio. Holly took over the captaincy of the Onslow College team this year.

also played 100 games, and she was captain for a while.”

Football and her other favoured sport, futsal, are keeping her busy at the moment.

“I train on Tuesdays and Thursdays for football and Friday’s for futsal and play for school on Wednesdays for my club on Sundays.”

As well as playing club football for Wellington United, she trains with the Samba Futsal academy, and has been part of the Capital Under 18 Women’s Futsal team.

As far as her two current positions for her two teams in football go, she doesn’t have a preference for either one, and has also played everywhere and anywhere in the past. “I used to also play both goal keeper and

striker when I was younger.”

She started playing when she was five, following her older brother into the game, while her granddad is a leading supporter of her and of the game.

On Wednesday she leads her team out on to the pitch at Te Whaea to play Wellington East Girls’ College in the 2 v 3 semi-final, while top qualifier Wellington Girls’ College and Hutt Valley High School play the match afterwards.

“Our semi-final against Wellington East Girls’ College should be a good game. We have played them twice this year, for a win and a loss.”

Holly has several coaches she is appreciative of for helping her career this far and for helping her play 100 games for her school. “Paul Hallett was my school coach up until this year and then Paul Leitch took over and Geesh [Guillermo Schiltenwolf] is my club coach.”

Netball more than just injury niggles Netball has an issue if a Sunday night Newshub report is on the money.

More than 20,000 ACC claims for netball-related injuries, has to be a concern for all involved.

Newshub‘s interesting piece last night highlighted an alarming stat for all involved.

More than 23,000 ACC claims were made relating to the sport in the past 12 months.

Over the past decade women receiving ACL surgeries has increased

120 percent compared to 30 percent for men.

Netball New Zealand has launched an injury prevention initiative to try to combat the issue.

I have covered netball at all levels from Saturday amateurs, to the Silver Ferns and everything in between.

The statistics, while high, did not surprise me.

I saw many teenagers wearing ankle and knee supports.

Shin splints were a regular injury at secondary school level and it is easy

to see why.

If a young girl has been playing the sport since they started primary school, it means they have likely played 10 years of netball on cold, concrete courts.

Naturally there is no give in that surface and the stop-start nature of the rules means players are reducing their speed or stopping completely which is an unnatural motion.

All of those factors, I always felt, served to negatively affect the growing limbs of young players.

One of the biggest misconceptions of netball is that it is non-contact.

I’ve seen many-a-player get shunted onto concrete or the hardwood indoor courts during a match.

I’ve seen stray elbows break noses and I’ve seen broken ankles from players stepping on each other’s feet.

Netball can be as physically demanding as any sport I have covered in my 12-year career.

Netball continues to be an immensely popular sport for girls and women in this country and it is

unlikely to change any time soon.

However, as players have become more professional, the speed of the game has increased, the intercepts are more aerial.

The bigger the reward, the higher the risk.

ACL injuries take almost a year for a professional player to return from, an injury like that to a social player is disastrous on many levels.

Netball New Zealand will have to be switched-on to this issue because it is likely to only get worse.

North Wellington keep momentum The latest round of Men’s Central League Football matches has led to a changing of the guard at both ends of the league table over the weekend.

The New World Newlands North Wellington team had an early start on Sunday morning for an epic match up against Napier City Rovers at Park Island. The first 20 minutes saw North Wellington defending consistently and Napier had three clear cut chances which could not be converted due to two great saves by North Wellington goalkeeper Nic Stanton and one missed opportunity from a Napier striker who should have done better.

Once the opening quarter of the game’s pressure was absorbed, there was a quick counter attack and Norths striker Jesse Randall was put in behind the Napier defence and gave North Wellington a probably undeserved 1-0 lead on the half hour mark. This goal took the wind out of Napier somewhat and 10 minutes later Nathan Simes was also put in behind the Napier defence and with a great acute angle finish, was able to put North Wellington 2-0 up with 40 minutes off the clock. Napier did score a

great goal themselves before half time making it 2-1 at the interval with North Wellington feeling somewhat lucky to be ahead and Napier wishing they were more clinical.

With some tactical adjustments at half time and some more understanding of what to expect, the second half was a more even affair.

Half as many chances were created, possession was kept better by both sides and the game evened out.

The final goal for North Wellington would again come from Jesse Randall with another amazing free kick from 20 plus yards out curling over the wall and beating the keeper at his near post. This move replicated his strike from last week and takes Randall’s personal goal tally for the season so far to 13 goals from 14 games.

This win lifts North Wellington to fourth place on the table. The next game at home will be to ninth placed Wairarapa United who will be high in confidence after beating league leaders Miramar Rangers 1-0, knocking Miramar back in to second spot. Western Suburbs are now top of the pile with a two point lead after a 1-0 win over Stop Out. Petone had a surprise 2-0 victory

over Waterside Karori and Wellington Olympic were 2-0 winners over Lower Hutt. When the dust finally settled on Sunday evening Stop Out now find themselves in the drop zone on 11 points with Wairarapa United and Petone close behind and both on 12 points. With four rounds still to play there is nothing certain about what final placings will look like.

In the Men’s Premier League, the goals were coming more often than the Number 2 bus at Seatoun Park

on Saturday and the Newlands Arms North Wellington team had four on the board within the first 35 minutes.

In fact that’s as good as it got for Norths who took out the match against the home team, Seatoun 4-1.

It was a double disaster for Seatoun who now cannot escape relegation back to the Capital 1 league for next year with two rounds still to play.

Hawks soar past Rams in try-fest

The Johnsonville Hawks will have a chance to play for some silverware after a stellar 53-24 win over the Upper Hutt Rams, on Saturday.

The victory, the team’s second in three weeks lifted them to 11th on the Swindale Shield ladder.

The two teams will meet again this weekend in the semifinals for ninth to 12th.

Johnsonville coach Roy Kinikinilau says it was great to see his team cut-loose.

“You can see the improvement that’s being made,” he says. “The guys are having fun and really enjoying their rugby.”

Johnsonville ran in eight tries in the effort with both wingers Waisea Yabakivou and Andrew Ellis both dotting down twice.

Ellis scored 19 points in the contest.

Kinikinilau says his team was able to find gaps, particularly on the edges and with the forwards doing the hard yards up-front, the points flowed throughout the 80 minutes.

Mark Sutton, Corey Lawrence, Ivan Vaisagote and Samisoni Moceicakau also scored tries.

“There’s definitely a good vibe around the club at the moment, people are smiling and they’re really enjoying the performances,” Roy says.

“We’re improving to the point where we will be able to play for some silverware which is certainly us heading in the right direction.”

The Johnsonville Cripples premier reserves bounced back from not playing last week to roll Stokes Valley.

Playing into the wind 1st half fighting hard but not finishing off their opportunities.

The Cripples trailed 10-0 at the break.

In the second half, it was all one way traffic with Johnsonville scoring some great tries to win 47-15.

The Cripples finished ninth on the ladder and will face Avalon on Saturday.
