45 years of community effort recognised Continued from page 1.

Francis has undertaken voluntary community service for 45 years through a range of organisations, including in leadership and governance roles.

He began his involvement with the Sisters of Compassion in 1974, organising the annual Street Day Appeal raffle fundraiser for more than 20 years. He began volunteering with Wellington’s Compassion Soup Kitchen in the early 1990s, retiring from their meal services in late 2019, but continuing in a fundraising capacity.

He volunteered with Wellington Night Shelter from 1990 to 1995. He joined the Soup Kitchen’s Board of Management in the 1990s, which later became the Suzanne Albert Compassion Centre, which he chaired from 2000 to 2008 before retiring from the Board in 2010.

“It’s a huge honour to get this honour,” he says.

“It’s most humbling and it’s never something that I ever expected to receive.

“It came as a total surprise to me.”

Francis says he gives a lot of credit to his wife “I’ve put a lot of work into my voluntary efforts but I have to give my wife, Jenny, a lot of credit because we had four kids at home and she kept things ticking along.”

Francis Fanning’s selfless commitment to his community has been recognised in the New Year’s Honours.

Wednesday January 13, 2021 The 73-year-old says it does not feel like 45 years of service has gone by.

“It started off quite small with the Sisters of Compassion when I took on a position of organising their annual fundraiser and it went on from there.

“I found I really valued my association with the Sisters of Compassion who are all

remarkable people who give up their entire lives for a cause they believe in.”

“I’ve got more out if it than I’ve given,” he says.

“I enjoyed what I did, I enjoy what I do now and I intend to continue for as long as I can.

“As a longtime volunteer at the soup kitchen, especially on Monday mornings, I

found I really enjoyed the interactions with people.

“Sometimes you saw people at a low point in their lives but it also provided a sense of community and camaraderie for others.

“It’s a reality that services like the ones like this are needed in the community and I was glad to be able to do my bit.

New Year’s Honours in the North

A number of people with North Wellington links were recognised in the New Years Honours.

Former Consumer chief executive and Wadestown resident Sue Chetwin was made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for her services to consumer rights.

After starting her career as a journalist, as Chief Executive of Consumer New Zealand from 2003-2020, Sue successfully campaigned for many important consumer law reforms, including prohibitions on unfair contract terms, fairness in consumer credit contracts, country of origin labelling, and controlling door knockers. She has led other successful campaigns on behalf of consumers including calling for mandatory standards for sunscreens, helping to regulate mobile truck shops, and calling out businesses on misleading claims such as greenwashing.

Fellow Wadestown resident and playwright Professor Angie Farrow was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to arts and in particular, theatre.

Angie has been active in theatre, creative leadership and arts education in New Zealand since 1990 and has written more than 50 plays.

Johnsonville’s Brenda Pilott was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for her services to the social and public service sectors.

Brenda advocated at the national level for pay equity for women and social services sector workers, recognition of domestic violence, and better resourcing for public services.

Police seek witnesses to Northland robbery Wellington Police are seeking witnesses to a robbery incident in Northland on the weekend which left a man with a serious injury.

About 6.10pm on Saturday, January 9, a man and a woman were in their car at Stellin Memorial Park, Northland, when they were approached by a group of men,

some of whom were reported to be wearing Nomad gang patches.

One of the group demanded the man’s backpack. During an altercation over the backpack, the man sustained a serious injury to his leg, which required surgery.

He was also allegedly punched a number of times.

The group left in two vehicles – a white BMW 525i, registration number LAB245, and a silver 1996 Nissan Sunny similar to the one pictured, registration number CSK541.

The backpack was later recovered at an address and a 20-year-old man was arrested in relation to

the incident. He appeared in Wellington District Court today on a charge of aggravated robbery and has been remanded in custody to reappear on 28 January.

Enquiries into the incident are ongoing, and Police are asking anyone with information about the incident, or who sighted the

vehicles involved in the area at the time, to come forward and speak to us.

Information can also be provided anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Police are seeking sightings of these two cars in relation to a robbery in Northland.

Dancing for mental health

Marielle Estelle has come a long way from learning English in Johnsonville two years ago.

The French woman now calls the capital home and she has launched a community campaign centred around dance to help bring a smile to people’s faces.

She has launched Freestyle Dance Wellington to encourage people to use dance to bring joy to their lives.

“I see so many positive aspects of dancing freely and I want to be this spark that makes people feel comfortable enough to do it,” she says.

“I feel there are not enough opportunities in everyday life to dance sober, in the day time, freely.”

Marielle, a jeweller by trade, says she hopes she can receive funding to expand the project in the coming weeks and months.

“It’s a tough time for people and I think just letting loose and enjoying yourself through dance it can do wonders for people’s health and well-being.”

Pasifika Festival brings taste of the islands Kia ora, Noa’ia, Mauri, Ni Sa Bula Vinaka, Fakaalofa lahi atu, Tālofa, Kia orana, Mālō e lelei, Mālō nī, Talofa lava, Tēnā koutou katoa – the annual Wellington Pasifika Festival will be showcasing the sights, sounds, and flavours of the Pacific at Odlins Plaza on January 23.

This festival highlights the arts, culture, and food of our Pacific communities in a festival atmosphere for everyone to enjoy,

says Deputy Mayor Sarah Free.

“It’s an opportunity for all of Wellington to celebrate and share the knowledge, values and beliefs of the Pacific.

There’ll be performance groups from all across the Pacific including Mafutaga Tagata

Matutua Senior Exercise Group, Israel Star, and opera legend Ben Makisi. The free, whānau friendly event will be hosted by award-winning comedian James Nokise.

James is looking forward to the event for many reasons, not just because he’ll be a judge in the always popular Pacific CookOff! “As mixed race, from a Pacific point of view this event is about reminding, reconnecting with our heritage that informs and, in many ways, empowers our strong contributions to New Zealand. From a non-Pacific view it’s about the best food, music, and dance in Wellington being easily available in one spot.”

“If I appear particularly joyful and enthusiastic on stage, that’ll be why!”

Toxic algae bloom caution urged Greater Wellington is urging the community to check for LAWA website warnings and alerts, following the emergence of a toxic algal blooms at Waipoua River, Te Awa Kairangi – Hutt River and the Pakuratahi River at Kaitoke campground.

Toxic algae is a reoccurring issue for our region’s fresh waterways when water temperatures warm and water levels lower.

For the Waipoua River, Te Awa Kairangi/Hutt River from Birchville to Manor Park, and Pakuratahi River at Kaitoke campground, Greater Wellington advises the public not to swim and to keep dogs on leashes. This is especially important for the Waipoua River Greater Wellington senior environmental scientist, Dr Mark Heath says, “Toxic algae has increased to dangerous red alert levels in the Waipoua River over the last week, with detached mats washing up at the river’s edge so we strongly advise against swimming and letting your dog off the leash. It is very likely as the weather gets warmer that this risk will increase.”

“It’s important we all scrub up on the facts so we can all keep safe this summer, as toxic algae can be harmful to people and dogs.

“Algal mats grow on the rocks in the riverbed and form leathery dark green or black mats, which van break off and accumulate at river edges. As the algal mats dry out they can become light

brown colour, and have a distinctive deep earthy or musty smell,” says Dr Heath.

Dogs are mostly at risk because they like the smell and taste of toxic algae.

Even a small amount – about the size of a 50 cent piece, can be enough to kill a dog.

Owners especially need to be vigilant of their dogs sniffing out toxic algal mats which can wash up at river edges.

Toxic algae isn’t the only harmful thing lurking in our water this summer, as bacteria from leaking pipes or run-off after heavy rain can contaminate swimming areas.

“In general, a good rule of thumb is to stay out of fresh or sea water for 48 hours after rain, and always check for warning signs,” adds Dr Heath.

Greater Wellington monitors popular swimming spots on a fortnightly basis to make sure the community knows when it’s safe to swim. To check if an area is suitable for swimming see the LAWA website.

It’s important the community keeps informed by checking LAWA alerts and following warning signs, so we can all look after our whanau and beloved pets this summer.

If you have been in contact with toxic algae and are feeling unwell see you doctor or ring Healthline 0800 611 116. Seek urgent medical attention for anyone with breathing difficulties or convulsions.

If you think your dog has swallowed toxic algae, take it to the nearest vet immediately.

Property Market 2021!

Happy new year everyone! So nice to be back and chatting with you all here. Hope you all managed to have a nice break. We worked right through the holiday period, with houses selling right on Christmas Day and around the stat days! We even had some houses fetching 20 offers!

Every year, without fail, Christmas and New Years holiday consistently is a fantastic time to sell, due to low supply, and very high motivated demand. The market never goes on holiday, only agents do.

To kick the year off, I want to share with you some observations that may help you with working out when it is the best time to make your property move. If you currently do not own any property, then getting on the property ladder ensures your long-term security against any market changes as you will always stay relative to the market. For everyone else, who are thinking of upsizing and downsizing, here are some of my observations to consider.

1. Is now a good time to sell? I hear a lot of real estate agents pushing the concept that now is a great time to sell, well that depends on a few things. The affordability of houses now is VERY cheap due to the low interest rates, the interest on mortgages today is still well below the interest during the last property boom. This indicates that price still have a good chunk to go before it will slow down. So, selling (in isolation) now isn’t a good idea. Then when you are sold, you must buy again in the same market. Currently supply of houses for sell is at a massive historic low, so buying back is going to be even harder. Which makes selling an even worse idea.

2. Interest rates – The variables that would need to change for interest rates to go up to a level where it will affect prices, it unlikely. The last property boom period we had seen interest rates between 4-5%+ and it is unlikely we will go back up to those rates any time soon. Banks and mortgage brokers are predicting 2% or lower by end of the year. Lower rates will mean higher sale prices, as buyers will be able to afford to pay more.

3. Moving back to NZ – As the pandemic globally is still hitting record highs, it is almost certain that more people are going to move back to NZ in the upcoming months, further pushing the market up.

Buyers that come back from making money overseas, have a much higher value perception of NZ property, as they can seem cheap compared to what they were used to overseas.

4. Rich will get richer – For those that own property, they are able to leverage off the growing equity of their existing properties and buy an investment (or change houses). Rent sits between 4.5% - 6% gross return on average in this area (well above interest rates), so tenants are almost paying the landlord to own the house.

So based on the market conditions, if you don’t need to sell, don’t sell. Chat to a good mortgage broker and see how you can keep your existing house. The real estate industry makes money on the process of selling houses, but good real estate agents make a career out of having integrity.

Ngaio photo competition a success The Ngaio Crofton Downs Residents Association ran a photographic competition towards the end of last year.

President Ian Turk was excited to see 60 photos entered.

“We’d never done such a thing alongside an annual meeting before and we weren’t sure whether or not people would enter.

“But now we are planning to do it again in 2021,” he says “I think it offers an opportunity for creativity and helps to build community. We are always keen to do both those things.”

Photographs had to be taken in NgaioCrofton Downs but could be of any subject.

Entries were invited in the four weeks leading up to the November annual general meeting where the winners, judged by local professional photographer Colin McDiarmid were announced.

The winners were: Landscapes - Michael Munro; People - Kate Spencer; Things - Penny Moore.

Wakefield Street and Convention Centre roadworks confirmed During January and February there will be weekday road works on Cable Street and Wakefield Street to connect utility services to the Tākina Wellington Convention and Exhibition Centre.

The works, including water, power, wastewater and stormwater connections, will involve lane closures on weekdays and are planned over two stages: Stage One: Cable Street Works: 5 January – 29 January 2021, weekdays only, 24 hour site The works will involve some trenching across the Cable Street road and footpath, and Cable Street will be down to one lane during the works to enable safe trenching and pipe installation.

There will also be large traffic signs throughout the central city to manage traffic and to alert road users of diversions.

Access will be maintained for vehicle and other road user and pedestrians to neighbouring buildings for

residents and businesses.

Tākina Wellington Convention Centre – Next steps Work on the Tākina Wellington Convention Centre is progressing well. Since completing the piling work and installation of the base isolators, contractors have focused on the installation of the steel structure which is now visible from street view.

In the next three to six months there will be continued work on the steel structure and concreting of floors as well as the installation of the façade canopies.

Once this stage has been completed, paint work throughout the building will start, and preparation for services will be installed.

It is on track for completion of the Centre in 2023.

Arch Jelley earns New Year’s honour Legendary running coach Arch Jelley has been made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the New Year’s Honours List.

Jelley, now 98-years-old, developed dozens of New Zealand’s leading athletes during a coaching career that spanned nearly six decades.

While he has spent most of his life in Auckland, Arch lived in Wellington for a number of years in the 1950s.

While in Wellington, he ran for Johnsonville’s Olympic Harriers and was club captain in 1956.

His older brother Charlie also ran for Olympic, and was club captain for six years in the 1950s/60s, and was made a life member in 1966.

Arch’s vast list of achievements

include coaching Sir John Walker to gold at the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games. Forty years on, Arch again made his presence felt at Olympic level as 1500m runner Hamish Carson qualified for the Rio Olympics under his tutelage. At the time, Jelley was the oldest top-level coach in New Zealand sport at 94.

Twenty of the athletes he coached represented New Zealand, with 12 competing either in the Olympics or World Championships. Between 1976 and 1993, he was appointed as coach or manager to 12 New Zealand or Oceania teams, including three Olympic Games teams.

He was inducted into the Athletics Coaches Association of New Zealand Hall of Fame in 2006 and, the following year, received a Sparc

lifetime achievement award for coaching excellence before being awarded an Athletics New Zealand merit award in 2009.

“I would have to rate this at the very top, of course, but it’s difficult to compare this honour with awards made within one’s sport,” Arch says.

“It’s a great honour for me and my family but also a tribute to the dozens and dozens of amateur coaches throughout New Zealand who give their time and expertise just for their particular sport. Without these dedicated people, most sports would perish.”

Outside of athletics, Arch has been involved with the Mt Albert Bridge Club since 1990, featuring as a tutor since 1996 and acting as president for ten years from 2003.

Melissa Moon receives New Year’s gong

Runner and Karori-born Melissa Moon has been recognised in the New Year’s Honours.

Karori-born runner Melissa Moon has been recognised as part of the New Zealand Order of Merit as part of the New Year’s Honours.

Melissa Moon is a two-time World Mountain Running Champion, claiming those titles in 2001 and 2003, and has won 21 national athletics titles over her career. In 2001, she was named New Zealand Sportswoman of the Year and was selected as one of 10 outstanding young persons of the world by Junior Chamber International (JCI) in 2008.

In 2010, she won the World Tower Running Championship and World Vertical Running Championship, and was recognised by the World Mountain Running Association as the second-ranked female mountain runner of all time in 2020.

In 2007, she was one of 20 selected international athletes who participated in the Blue Planet Run around the world, a 95-day non-stop relay race which began at the United Nations in New York with the aim of providing safe drinking water to 200 million

people by 2027.

In 2015, she guided blind runner Maria Williams in the London Marathon where Maria’s time earned her the number two spot in the International Paralympic rankings for the fully blind.

Melissa also volunteered at Wellington’s Compassion Centre for more than 10 years, is an ambassador for the Malaghan Institute and serves as a patron of Project K, a mentoring programme for youth that uses adventure-based learning.

Swan plants Fascinating for children and adults alike, Monarch caterpillars love feeding on the leaves of the swan plant. From stripey caterpillars to graceful butterfly, there is no time during the Monarch’s lifecycle where they don’t look amazing - and Swan plants are a vital food source for these endangered insects.

Adult Monarch butterflies lay eggs on the underside of the leaves of swan plants, which soon hatch into hungry little caterpillars. It will take about three or four weeks for the caterpillars to reach full size where eventually they will form

Modern Black Caps surpass 1980s heroics New Zealand is currently the No 1 ranked test team in the world and this is a golden era for the game in this country.

For years, those a little older than myself, (I’m 31) cherished the days of the 1980s when the national team lead by Richard Hadlee, John Wright and a youthful Martin Crowe won a test series in Australia, something which the present day side has not achieved.

However, I think the current team would prevail in a hypothetical game.

Bruce Edgar and John Wright were the openers back in the

day while Tom Latham and Tom Blundell do the job at present.

I would take one from each decade when formulating my mash-up team. Latham and Wright to open.No 3 is simple because it’s Kane Williamson, who will be our best ever batsman when his career concludes and he can captain my mash-up XI.No 4 has to be Martin Crowe but rest assured, I’d slot Ross Taylor in at No 5 who easily beats out the likes of Jeff Crowe or even an Andrew Jones of the 1980s era.

No 6 is a tricky spot potentially lacking in depth.

You have the likes of Jeremy Coney and Lance Cairns up against Mitchell Santner, Colin de Gandhomme and Daryl Mitchell.

It’s tempting to put de Grandhomme in there because he’s a hard hitter who can elevate the run rate and who can be a handy seam option in home conditions.

However, out of respect and tenure, I’ll go Coney to bat at No 6 in the all rounder role.

The wicket keeper battle between Ian Smith and BJ Watling isn’t as close to me as it may be for others.

I’ll have Watling who’s an underrated glove man who scored vital

runs when his team needs it most.

No 8 is Sir Richard Hadlee who will beat out Kyle Jamieson.

Hadlee is our best ever cricketer so is an automatic selection and there just isn’t enough of a sample size yet on Jamieson who could likely force his way into the team with the fullness of time.

To round out the last three spots, I’d have the modern day trio of Tim Southee, Neil Wagner and Trent Boult.

Partnerships in bowling is just as important as batting.

No finer fast bowling duo has New Zealand had than Southee

and Boult and every team needs a bowler as Lion-hearted as Wagner who is a threat with the old ball.

The glaring omission is the lack of a front-line spinner but that’s an issue with no clear solution in either team.

So to sum up my mash-up XI would be Wright, Latham, Williamson, Martin Crowe, Taylor, Coney, Watling, Hadlee, Southee, Wagner, Boult.

That is seven players from the 2021 side and four from the 1980s.

Always a fun debate over a drink and I’m not sure if there are many wrong answers.

Johnsonville batsmen fail in final

The Jekyll and Hyde nature of Johnsonville’s batting was clear to see as Taita claimed the Ewen Chatfield one-day cricket final at the Basin Reserve on Sunday.

Johnsonville’s batsmen failed to fire, despite winning the toss and choosing to bat, they were bowled out for 101.

They eventually lost by nine wickets.

It was a familiar look for the batsmen, who had struggled early in the season, before finding momentum in the last four round-robin games to help the side surge into the final.

Captain and opener Rakitha Weerasundara topscored with 26 but not one of the batsmen had a strike rate above 60 as they were bundled out in 38 overs.

Jono Tuffin was the chief destroyer for Taita as he too four for 32 from his nine overs.

Taita opener Henry Walsh made batting look easy on the pitch, as he stroked an unbeaten 63 off 74 balls as Taita cruised to the target in the 23rd over.

Weerasundara says they weren’t able to get any momentum into the innings.

“The effort was very disappointing with the bat,” he says.

“We needed someone in our top five or six to get the big score and it just didn’t happen for us.

He says he had no regrets about choosing to bat first.

“The pitch was low and slow but it would have got worse as the day went on which would have helped our spinners if we had got a score around 200.

“When you only make 100, that’s never going to be enough runs for the bowlers to do anything with, you can’t build pressure.”

The twenty20 format takes centre-stage for the next few weeks before the two-day competition concludes the season.

Johnsonville suffered a nine-wicket loss to Taita in the premier one-day club cricket final at the Basin Reserve, on Sunday.

Joh nsonville’s Da le Rayner has come agonisingly close to a national pairs title last week.

Dale and her partner Selina Smith lost on the final end to Val Smith and

Lisa Prideaux 17-16 at the Summerset Nationals at Auckland’s Carlton Cornwall.

Dale and Selina had a 15-8 lead at the halfway point of the 18-end contest but could not hold on to secure the title.
