Anna Hunt says the time is right to close the book on her time as owner of beloved Marsden Books in Karori.

First as an employee and then as an owner, she admits it has been a huge part of her life for more than 20 years but spending more time with family will become the priority.

Anna to farewell her bookshop for family “Eventually all things must change,” she says. “They can’t go on forever.

“I’ve owned the shop for 20 years and at the very beginning, there wasn’t even a computer here.

“We’ve been through the tough years where e-books thought they would wipe us out.

“A bookshop like this is embedded in the local community,” Anna says.

“There’s not a lot of places people can come and feel safe and welcome and for old people and young families, there’s just so much that a bookshop does.

Anna says she initially declined an offer to buy the bookshop from the previous owner prior to 2000.

“I worked here part-time and I was nursing as well.

“I was working here just as an employee and I said no because I had seen how hard it was for her but then I thought that I wouldn’t be offered an opportunity like this again so I needed to do it,” she says.

“I had a lot of support from my husband, I couldn’t have done it without him.”

Anna says she has loved every moment of the journey.

“It’s been everything and then even more,” she says.

“I’ve loved every minute of it.

Anna Hunt has had more than 20 years as the face of Marsden Books.

“It’s going to be hard to walk away but then I’ll just become another really good customer.”

Anna says a good bookshop needs to understand its clients.

“You need to understand your market, understand who is coming in and what books they may be interested in.

“I’m always looking for a point of difference and about a third of the business is children’s’ books and we take a great deal of

pleasure in seeing children grow up and keep reading.

“I’ll miss the people, you get quite fond of the customers because we know most of them by name and you care about what is going on in their lives…. that might be the nurse in me.”

Anna has eight grandchildren and a ninth on the way so she is looking forward to spending more time with them.

However, she will stick around

for two or three months to help new owner Briony Hogg.

“Briony is the right person,” she says.

“The shop is like my baby but we have the same philosophy and feeling towards the community and she’ll put her own spin on things but she’ll have the same passion.

“I’ve had my time and now it is time for someone else to have a go.”

Shakespeare calls for trio

Three students from Wellington College, Logan Forsyth, Joshua Kemp Whimp and George Parker, have been chosen from the SGCNZ e-National University of Otago Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festival to attend the week-long intensive of workshops and rehearsals.

They will be three of seven Wellington students to attend the Shakespeare Globe Centre New Zealand’s (SGCNZ) National Shakespeare Schools Production (NSSP) in late September.

The three Assessors were Ryan Hartigan from the University of Otago; Salesi Le’ota, Wellington actor, who has had considerable experience on the Pop-Up Globe stage; and, courtesy Trinity College London, John Gardyne, in London via ZOOM for the four-hour decision-making from 5am UK time, having already viewed all the entries.

The NSSP Selectors were all SGCNZ Alumni, Alexander Sparrow, Katie Boyle and Cassandra Tse.

The College’s entry of Henry IV Part 1 also took out two awards, Outstanding Delivery of the Text Award donated by Speech Communication Association, and Forsyth and Kemp Whimp were awarded the title of The Two Actors Who Showed the Strongest and Most Truthful Connection Between Them donated by Toi Whakaari: NZ Drama School.

Of their performance, Assessor John Gardyne said the boys were very strong, delivering a detailed and convincing relationship.

He said the delivery of the text was excellent, very fresh and something the audience couldn’t help but be drawn into.

This was an especially impressive achievement as the students were tasked with submitting their performance by video due to disruptions caused by COVID-19.

The students, from all around the country, will also be joined by a winner of the SGCNZ/ Dawn Sanders Shakespeare Costume Design Competition and the SGCNZ/Morrison Music

Council gifted land for Outer Green Belt Wellington City Council has agreed to the generous gifting of land to be used as scenic reserve, adding ecological value and more diversity to the Outer Green Belt (OGB) in Tawa.

The 16,670m2 piece of land, adjoining Te Ngahere o Tawa (Forest of Tawa) and Spicer Forest, has important natural forest remnants and has been identified as a Significant Natural Area under the draft District Plan review.

Mayor Andy Foster says on behalf of the city, he is deeply grateful for this generous gift from the landowner who wishes

to remain anonymous.

“This land will be another valuable addition to our Outer Green Belt, which is already such a precious resource for the whole of Wellington. We’ve been steadily working to complete the OGB, including with recent purchases of the adjacent Te Ngahere o Tawa and 268 Ohariu Valley Road.

“Today Wellingtonians and visitors enjoy the Town Belt established 180 years ago – we also want people to be enjoying and appreciating the OGB in hundreds of years’ time from now.

“It’ll also help us to provide protection around this important

landscape and eco-systems, as well as being a future seed source for restoration planting.”

The owner has gifted it under the condition Wellington City Council will pay for the legal and survey costs required to make a separate title.

Acquisition of this land aligns with Council’s open space plans and policies including the Outer Green Belt Management Plan and Our Capital spaces, both of which are concerned with protecting and restoring the ecology of our natural spaces.

Top award for Wadestown Toastmaster

Wadestown Toastmaster Rob Julian has received one of the most prestigious International Toastmaster awards in recognition of his outstanding service.

District Director Diane Isherwood presented him with the honour.

Rob has been a member of toastmasters for 48 years, and is a member of both Wadestown and Ohariu Toastmasters in Johnsonville.

He has started several clubs and public speaking and leadership courses for central Wellington and Johnsonville businesses.

In addition, he has won contests for a National Toastmasters Speech, Humorous Speech and the Evaluation.

Rob has run several Youth Leader-

ship courses for schools, organising toastmaster presentations for these courses at Wadestown School, Raroa Intermediate, and Newlands College.

He has also run Speech development and Science Teaching Courses in Burmese Refugee Camps and in Myanmar.

Rob says he joined Toastmasters in Palmerston North in 1972 because he realised that as a chemistry teacher, all his social contacts were teachers, and there is nothing more boring than a bunch of teachers getting together.

“They talk about teaching,” he says.

He needed to get out and meet ‘normal’ people.

Toastmasters International is pleased to recognise his contribution.

I think children shouldn’t have to wear masks at schools only in public spaces like a train or a suppermarket. The city that is more affected with Covid cases should be more careful about wearing masks more often.

I actually don’t think we need to because Covid dosen’t really affect children because children have stronger immune systems than adults.

I think we should wear them because there are multiple viruses and the masks could protect from other things as well.

I think children should wear the masks because they could be carrying the virus and be asymptomatic especially in public spaces.

I don’t think kids have to wear them because they don’t know how to put them on properly and adults should wear them because they don’t have as good an immune system as kids.

I think that we shouldn’t have to wear masks at school because they would be very uncomfortable and we would be taking them off alot and especially for younger children and it would make our voices muffled.

Fruit trees planted Council drones on about at Ben Burn Park the plight of the bumblebee A collaboration between the Karori Residents’ Association, Karori Community Garden and Wellington City Council for planting some fruit trees at the Ben Burn Park playground.

The idea for planting fruit trees here came about because of the Ben Burn project to upgrade the existing trees.

The Karori Community Garden will be a caretaker group to keep the fruit trees fed, maintained and watered during drier months. We now plan to plant a small number of fruit trees and create community engagement, including how

this could be expanded on around the suburb further in the future.

The belief is that planting fruit trees here will liven up the space, provide community-building and educational opportunities, boost biodiversity, and be part of building food resilience in Karori.

The hope is to find a neighbour who could assist with getting water over summer to the fruit trees by providing access to an outdoor tap, and we are also looking for families to become guardians of a tree.

Fruit trees have been planted by Karori's Ben Burn Park playground.

Wellington City Council is celebrating Bee Aware Month this September with events and activities to create a real buzz around the city.

Council is partnering with the apiculture community and stakeholders to help raise awareness around the critical role bees play in our lives – and how everyone can play their part in protecting their future.

Bees contribute about $5 billion to New Zealand’s economy through products like honey and beeswax, they also play an important role in our biodiversity, pollinating and regeneration, while supporting about one third of everything we eat, says Councillor Teri O’Neill, Natural Environment portfolio lead.

“Our native bees are essential in supporting our urban ecology, and they are a remarkably low-cost investment for our growing communities as they contribute so much to our food production systems and medicines too.

“As a proud beekeeper of about 50,000 bees I have firsthand experience in how a little bit of effort goes such a long way with these remarkable

This Bee Aware Month, Council and Apiculture NZ (ApiNZ) are inviting everyone to join in any of the whānaufriendly, accessible and fun events and activities around the city, all designed to raise awareness and provide tips about how to be bee-friendly.

Activities include meeting beekeepers, learning how to make beeswax wraps, and visiting an apiary. There’ll also be events at local libraries, online digital events and competitions, and of course there’ll be lots of honey.

We can all do our bit, and education is a good place to start, says Mayor Andy Foster.

“Knowing what to do when you find a swarm of bees,

appreciating the value bees provide in so many ways to our economy, ecology and environment, or just planting flowers in your garden to ensure a healthy variety of food for them are simple things we can all do.

“At Council, we make the city as bee-friendly as possible by growing seasonal flowers to support their ecosystems, we have a number of beehives, and we also supply natives to volunteer groups to add even more bee-friendly plants to our parks and reserves.”

Suzette finds family strength for cancer shave

BestStart Montessori Johnsonville teacher in training Suzette D’Rosairo has family motivations for her head being shaved next Wednesday for National Wig Day. The 43-year-old, has had a sister and brother in Sri Lanka, who have both had cancer diagnoses.

It will be the second time, Suzette shaves her head for cancer after doing it in 2013.

She is raising funds for the New Zealand Children’s Cancer Foundation. ”When I first did it, my sister had a lump on her breast and this time my brother has been diagnosed with a type of lymphoma cancer,” she says.

“I know what it feels like to be helpless because I am a million miles away from them and I can’t do anything.

“Having someone close to you have cancer and being unable to be there to support them made me realise how

helpless I felt.

“I thought if I can’t help them, there will be people here going through the same thing and I could help them.”

She says people going through cancer treatment who lose their hair get a self-esteem boost from having a wig made of natural hair.

She says the first time she shaved her head it took some getting used too.

“The night before the shave I cried, I had a massive meltdown because it hit me that I wasn’t sure how I would look.

“The first time I saw myself without hair was a weird feeling but I was like ‘ok, this is me’.”

She hopes the preschool children would learn the lesson of caring for others while being part of the shave.

Suzette says if her effort can help make others happy then she is honoured and blessed to be able to do it.”

Call for urgent action to improve Porirua Harbour The Porirua Harbour Trust is making a call for urgent action to maintain and improve the Porirua Harbour environment from the continuing effects of pollutants, such as sediment and nutrients.

The call for action follows a recent report by the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment (PCE) that has highlighted continuing degradation of the Porirua Harbour in common with several other estuaries looked at by the Commissioner.

Helen Sligo, Porirua Harbour Trustee and Northern Suburbs resident says action is needed.

“The Porirua Harbour acts as a waste trap for all sorts of pollution including sediment from subdivisions and the Transmission Gully construction, contaminants from roads and rail, and nutrients from paddocks on farms and lifestyle blocks.

“What is frustrating is there are a huge number of documents and research telling us how the harbour is degrading, the issues that are causing it, and how to potentially fix the issues. What is missing are the urgent actions to fix the problems.”

“The worry is that economic issues arising from the Covid-19 pandemic have distracted our councils from focussing on the harbour.

“Whatever approach is taken by the councils, action is needed and it is needed now.”

‘Tree of Life’ quilt donated to Huntleigh Home There were sounds of admiration all round recently when Christine McKenna showed residents at Enliven’s Huntleigh Home a quilt she had made for them.

The ‘Tree of Life’ quilt was made by Christine – whose father Don used to be a resident at Huntleigh.

Christine worked with residents Audrey Hayes, Rose Greenman and June Robertson on the quilt’s design.

“I’ve worked quite a bit with older people in my career,” Christine says.

“It’s a very special time of life.”

Featured in the centre of the quilt is the Tree of Life – similar to one designed years ago by resident Audrey and Huntleigh Home staff member Bryan Williams to appear on a flag that still flies outside the home.

The quilt’s design also aligns with Enliven’s philosophy of care, which follows the Eden Alternative and uses the Tree of Life in its practices.

“The Tree of Life is used to represent a residents’ life journey, to be well known and to staff and other residents,” explains Recreation Team Leader Annelize Steyn. “The tree encompasses a life worth

She says Huntleigh Home previously had a quilt that was used to help comfort people who had come in for palliative care.

The original quilt went missing some years ago and when Christine found out she offered to make a new one.

Christine says she enjoyed working with the

residents on the design and style of the new quilt. She even had time to make a second one, which was also donated to the home.

School students will get the chance to ‘visit’ Peru and learn about its people and culture thanks to an experiential learning tool developed at Victoria University of Wellington.

The award-winning tool was built using virtual reality gaming software but a new web-based version means schools can access it without specialised equipment.

Students will be able to take a virtual visit to Machu Picchu Pueblo in Peru where they will find out about the country and explore the costs and benefits of tourism from a sustainability point of view, says Dr Christian Schott of the University’s School of Management. He developed the tool with a multi-disciplinary team, including staff from the University’s Faculty of Education who provided guidance for schools on using it for teaching and learning.

Dr Schott says the purpose of the tool is to enable students

to gain a better understanding and build connections with different people and cultures, without the environmental cost.

“It allows students to experience many aspects of a distant place and world, without having to travel there and have the greenhouse gas impacts that go with that,” says Dr Schott, adding that it is particularly relevant at a time when students cannot leave the country or in some cases attend school because of COVID-19 restrictions.

An earlier version of the tool developed by Dr Schott and members of his team focused on an island in the Yasawa group in Fiji and has been successfully used in his teaching for a number of years.

“We took the research findings from that to guide our development of the Machu Picchu Pueblo learning tool.

Equipment constraints and other challenges for secondary schools have led us to

develop a version of this virtual reality tool that is usable on computers without the need for virtual reality headsets. We want to enable all students to access this learning, not just those in high decile schools.”

Dr Schott says the project is driven by the need to help students develop critical and creative thinking to address the pressing challenges of sustainability and climate change.

“Classroom based learning and teaching generally doesn’t allow students to directly experience the social, cultural and ecological contexts of distant places,” says Dr Schott.

“This tool does. It brings together experiential education and virtual reality technology to both immerse learners in a meaningful ‘case study’ and to cater to a wider range of learning preferences than commonly fostered through reading, writing or listening.”

Frances Hodgkins exhibit to delight Wellingtonians Victoria University of Wellington’s Adam Art Gallery Te Pataka Toi is giving Wellingtonians an opportunity to see a significant survey of work by Frances Hodgkins (1869–1947), one of the country’s most important expatriate artists of the twentieth century.

The presentation is the final leg of the major exhibition Frances Hodgkins: European Journeys, a retrospective developed and toured by Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki. For its last outing, the exhibition has been reshaped to provide a unique experience for local audiences.

The Adam’s Director, Christina Barton, has worked closely with Auckland Art Gallery senior curator Mary Kisler to refine the selection of paintings and present

them in the Adam’s distinctive spaces.

The exhibition also includes six works

by Hodgkins lent by local collectors, several of which have not previously been on public view.

The show is supplemented by 19 Gallery, a miniature gallery built to resemble a 1934 original and populated by the work of 19 contemporary New Zealand artists, and a newly commissioned 20-metre-long wall painting by artist Imogen Taylor and architect Sue Hillery.

Frances Hodgkins: European Journeys is the culmination of a significant international project to bring together works from New Zealand and around the world to explore the artist’s place in twentieth-century art. It draws from important public and private collections in

the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, presenting the most comprehensive picture of this trailblazing New Zealand artist to date.

Curated by Mary Kisler, the exhibition traces Hodgkins’s creative and peripatetic life through France, Morocco and Spain to her final days in England, examining the influence of location on her development as a modernist painter and the notion of travel and journeying as sources of artistic inspiration.

The Adam Art Gallery presentation includes 65 works produced between 1901 and 1946: from early watercolour travel sketches of the French Riviera, Morocco and Venice, through to Hodgkins’s first contact with modernism in Paris, and oil paintings from her later life in the UK.

New Parking Policy affects everyone in Wellington Wellington City Council has adopted a new Parking Policy to manage its on- and off-street parking in the city.

Mayor Andy Foster says the new policy is comprehensive and will set the city up well for the challenges of our changing and growing city.

“This detailed framework will guide future decision-making

on the management of all Council-controlled parking spaces across our city. It sets a hierarchy to prioritise spaces for different types of parking in different parts of our city. The policy also provides a new approach to setting parking fees in response to supply and demand and developing area-based parking management plans.”

The Council’s Associate Transport Portfolio Leader, Councillor Jenny Condie, who has responsibility for parking, says the parking policy is a huge piece of work that effects everyone, whether you drive or not.

“It’s really about our public street space, what our street space is for and how we will go about prioritising the use of it. One of

the drivers of this is the Let’s Get Wellington Moving [LGWM] project which is an exciting stepchange in how we move around and through our city.

“LGWM will require extra space on our streets. Wellington streets are narrow and our geography means they are also often winding and steep. We don’t have a lot of spare space on our streets,

or the opportunity to widen them.

As pressure come onto uses of street space, such as parking, we need to be really clear what our priorities are for the greatest public good.

“The changes won’t happen overnight; they will be incremental and will align with other transport improvement projects,” says Councillor Condie.

Karori resident to host new Pasifika show A new talk show on Pacific television platform Oriana TV hosted

by Karori’s Tupe Solomon-Tanoa’i shines a spotlight on Pasifika success, revealing the characteristics that have enabled high-flyers to excel.

“Talanoa with Tupe” explores the lives and careers of Pasifika people who have succeeded in a diverse range of disciplines.

Tupe, who is a producer, former diplomat, and leader in the philanthropic sector, says the programme features interviews with Pasifika thought-leaders from a range of professions, discussing what success means to them.

“I really wanted to delve deeply into what drives them as leaders in their respective fields and to understand the advantages that we bring to the table as people of

Pasifika heritage,” says Tupe.

Over 13 weeks, the show features in-depth interviews with Pasifika people excelling in entertainment, business, politics, medicine, law, architecture, education and many other domains.

The guest line-up includes former MP and Pasifika trailblazer Luamanuvao Dame Winnie Laban, entrepreneur Fiso John Fiso, Laulu Mac Leauanae who is the only Pasifika Chief Executive in the New Zealand public service, Deputy Mayor of Porirua Izzy Ford, and the first Pasifika and only female vascular surgeon in New Zealand Dr Lupe Taumoepeau.

The first season of “Talanoa With Tupe” kicks-off at 7.30pm on Sunday September 13 with an emotional, heart-felt episode featuring well-known Samoan

comedian and entertainer Tofiga Fepulea’i, who is formerly of “The Laughing Samoans”, a regular on the TV2 show “Fresh” and recently starred in the movie “Take Home Pay”.

“During the series, many of the guests reveal things they’ve never spoken about publicly before and Tofiga is no different, he’s known the world over for his ability to make us laugh but we get to see another side to him in this interview,” says Tupe.

“That episode should come with a warning to have a box of tissues handy”.

Talanoa With Tupe also features segments highlighting Pacific literature, communication strategies for parents, musical performances from emerging talent, and a quiz on countries in the Blue Pacific region.

Masks on public transport no issue so far Metlink is seeing mask use on their buses taken up without too many issues so far.

With masks now mandatory on public transport for those over 12, Metlink has been happy so far with the public response.

Scott Gallacher, general manager of Metlink says passengers are already getting to grips with the additional measure.

“We’ve seen thousands of people wearing masks on our buses, ferries and trains. Social media is awash

with people wearing the most fantastic masks, scarves and bandanas and Wellingtonians have kicked off a national trend using the hashtag #OnBoardWithMasks to show their support,” says Scott Gallacher.

As well as face coverings, passengers are still expected to take personal responsibility for the existing alert level 2 measures.

Passengers must continue to keep a 1-metre distance on board services and keep a 2-metres distance while waiting for services.

“The Government has made it clear that Metlink’s frontline workers are not expected to risk their own health and safety by enforcing physical distancing. Where our frontline staff see safe and low risk opportunities for action they will use their own discretion, but ultimately, it is for passengers to make the right choices, for their own safety and the safety of others.”

While physical distancing measures are in place Metlink’s capacity is reduced to 30-35% of its usual

amount of passengers on buses, around 30% on trains and around 50% on ferries.

“We’ve got all the buses, ferries and trains out that we can but we’re asking for patience and understanding at this time. If people have the ability to work from home or travel outside of peak hours we welcome their help.”

Passengers should also continue to practice good personal hygiene by washing and sanitising their hands before and after travelling, sneezing

and coughing into their elbows and avoiding public transport completely if they are sick.

QR codes, already installed on trains and ferries, are being added to buses to boost contact tracing preparations.

“It is paramount to the safety of the community that we all follow the advice of the Government. We are all in this together and the Government is calling upon all of us to make the most appropriate personal choices during these extraordinary times.

Buy with someone else – In today’s modern world, more and more buyers are needing to pool their resources together to get on the property ladder. We are seeing friends, siblings, work colleagues, buying together.

There are even companies that manage this matchmaking process. With prices on a positive trend since 1992, if it doesn’t work out, you can always sell it!

2. Invest – You don’t have to live in your first home. Look at purchasing an investment instead. That way you can continue to live frugally at home, in a flat, etc – whilst still benefiting from capital gains and rental income.

3. Prepare to change banks – The biggest change we have seen, since Covid-19 started, is the attitudes of mortgage providers / banks.

Depending on how the wind blows that day, the standards and criteria are constantly changing.

Just because one bank says no, doesn’t mean all of them will. Get in touch with a trusted mortgage broker and re-assess your budget with different banks. If you need a recommendation for one, just yell out.

4. Rent your dream home – This is probably the most overlooked option when people are looking to buy their ‘dream home’. The more expensive a house is the less the rental return will be. For example, there is currently a near new, beautiful, big, 271m2 family home for rent in Churton Park, at $950/week. When you calculate this against the sale value estimate you are looking at well below 4% gross return.

When you consider property management fees, insurance, rates, depreciation, maintenance, mortgage interest, etc, it is cheaper to rent this property than own it (and invest your money on good rental properties instead). So why is this owner renting this out instead of selling and reinvesting better? Not all landlords are investors, there are people who do not prioritise their financial well-being, and that is ok.

GARDENING THIS WEEK The importance of Calcium: By Wally Richards

Getting things right can be as simple as giving your gardens a good dose of a fast acting lime.

Starting off a new season in the vegetable garden it is important to get things right. Calcium (garden lime) is a very basic mineral that is often overlooked by gardeners.

Kiwi gardeners in the past would dig over their vegetable garden at the beginning of winter after the last crops had been harvested.

The soil would be turned to the depth of one and a half to two spade depths, bringing the subsoil to the surface and then left unbroken as mounds for frosts to work on.

Over these clods of soil a good coating of garden lime would be

applied making it look like it had snowed after application.

The idea was to bring up from the subsoil minerals to the surface.

Weeds would be buried underneath to compost down and the soil would be exposed to the elements as the lime would be washed in.

In spring these clods would break up with a light touch of the hoe turning the garden into a lovely fine tilth of healthy soil.

The principals of liming our vegetable gardens have not changed even if this practice is too often neglected these days.

on the phone this week who explained to me that he was gardening naturally (without the use of chemicals) and he had felt that the results were not as good as he would have liked.

So last season he gave the garden a good dose of gypsum (calcium & sulphur) and the improvement of the crops was really noticeable. Even his dad (an old, very experienced gardener) remarked that he had finally got things right.

Getting things right can be as simple as giving your gardens a good dose of a fast acting lime.

I say fast acting because not all limes are equal in the time frame that they can be of benefit to the soil.

Some garden limes come from lime stone that can take up to 10 years to become soluble and useful in the soil.

That is like putting your money in the bank and having to wait 10 years to get any interest.

On the other hand soft limes start working for you immediately on application.

Lime sweetens the soil as we say which means it lifts the pH to be more alkaline.

NZ soils over time become more and more acidic because of our rain fall, these days likely even quicker because of pollution.

All our beneficial friends in the soil require calcium to thrive, as one source explained it; calcium is like the coal that feeds the furnace, calcium feeds the soil life making for great gardening.

Acidic soil becomes anaerobic and breeds the microbes you do not want, called pathogens or diseases.

The soil has the same principals as our own bodies, if we become acidic inside we can become sick and diseases such as cancers can thrive. If we keep our internal body alkaline then we will be much better off.

Soil pathogens can be suppressed by using Terracin followed by applications of Mycorrcin.

There may be minerals in the soil that plants need but can’t take up because of the lack of calcium.

In plants calcium is part of cell walls and membranes; it controls movement in and out of cells, reacts with waste products and neutralizes toxic materials.

Calcium activates many enzyme systems, it improves microbial activity and it enhances uptake of other nutrients. It is essential for cell division as well as increasing cell density, and improves texture (crunch) of crops.

Calcium is critical for balancing excess nitrogen as well as disease suppression.

Having the correct amount of calcium in the soil will require less nitrogen.

The calcium will loosen the soil and make more nitrogen available.

Lack of sufficient calcium will result in the following plant disorders; Necrosis at the tips and margins of young leaves, bulb and fruit abnormalities, (such as blossom end rot in tomatoes), deformation of affected leaves, highly branched, short, brown root systems, severe, stunted growth, and general chlorosis.

The important aspect to remember is that calcium is vitally important to the health of your plants and soil.

Every plant needs calcium to grow. Once fixed, calcium is not mobile in the plant.

It is an important constituent of cell walls and can only be supplied in the xylem sap.

Therefore, if the plant runs out of a supply of calcium, it cannot re-mobilize calcium from older tissues.

If transpiration is reduced for any reason, the calcium supply to growing tissues will rapidly become inadequate.

Without adequate amounts of calcium, plants experience a variety of problems as our gardening friend found out at the beginning of this article.

Sprouting new ideas

By Dwyllis Maggs Sick of winter soups? Craving something fresh? While you wait for your salad greens to flourish get sprouting.

I use a large glass preserving jar and a lid with a mesh insert that I bought from my local organic shop. You can also buy online and buy some seeds to sprout while you are about it.

Now comes the hard part – choosing from the wide range of sprouting seed mixes.

Alfalfa is a classic but if you want something with a bit of bite then choose a radish mix. Mung bean and lentils require a slightly different method so wait until you

have more sprouts under your belt before attempting these.

The basic steps are: put a tablespoon of seed into your jar and fill it to half way with cold water. Screw the lid on tight and drain out most of the water. Leave just enough so you can swirl the seeds around the inside of the jar, spreading them out so they are not in a large clump. Then drain any excess water off and leave the jar on its side in a shady spot on the kitchen bench.

This will remind you to rinse your seeds morning and night so they don’t dry out.

In a few days you will see the first signs of germination. Wait until your sprouts green up before you eat them. This will take about a week. Bon appetit.

Johnsonville earn first Swindale Shield win in 36th attempt

After almost two years and 36 matches, Johnsonville earned a Swindale Shield rugby victory with a 38-12 win over Avalon, on Saturday.

Coach Roy Kinikinilau says the team was not exactly jumping for joy despite the accomplishment.

“Don’t get me wrong, we were happy but we weren’t ecstatic,” he says.

“The boys realised that we let a couple of games slip earlier in the season and I think that was in the back of the minds of a few of them.”

Johnsonville dominated proceedings at the Fraser Park artificial ground.

Left winger Andrew Ellis scored 18 points, including two tries and four conversions.

No 10 Mark Sutton also scored a brace in the six try to two triumph.

“We did a lot of really good things, Roy says.

“Andrew and Mark played really well and we are always looking to find ways to get them involved.

“I’m sure it will give us some confidence heading into our final two games of the year.”

Hooker Lucas Aukuso capped a man of the match effort with his first premier try.

Roy says his team were guilty of trying too many 50-50 offloads and believed

patience would be an important asset over the next fortnight.

“Our confidence will be boosted and that’s a good thing, we have two home games left so hopefully we can show our supporters what we are capable of.

Johnsonville will play Marist St Pats at Helston Park on Saturday.

The Johnsonville presidents grade team suffered a narrow 10-5 defeat to Marist St Pats after being down on firepower and resources.

The Johnsonville Cripples premier reserve team heldoff a fast finishing Avalon team 29-24.

The Colts also suffered a defeat to Upper Hutt.

Success for North Wellington National Sport Club Survey launched badminton players

North Wellington age-group badminton players found plenty of success at the Hutt Valley Under-17 Open over the weekend.

Samuel Navarra won three titles in the boys singles, doubles with partner Lezhi Zhu and mixed doubles with partner Isabella Chen.

Aravind Chandran and Sartaj Sidhu’s winning streak came to a halt at the boys doubles final where they finished runners-up.

Henry Chap secured the boys singles plate title and with partner Marcus Gonzales took out the boys doubles plate title.

Margaret Gonzales and Ayesha Mina took out the girls doubles plate title.

Perry Xie, Oark Hong Lim, Hayley Chung and Sophia Wong were finalists in various plate events.

The National Sport Club Survey which was launched last week will allow the future of sport to be plotted.

Project Team comprises co-leads Dr Mel Johnston and Dr Michael Naylor (from AUT) as well as Amber Campbell, Will Caccia-Birch and Gordon Noble-Campbell (Association Chairman). The project aligns with the spirit of insightsdriven provision of sport, which is increasingly a priority across the sector.

The Club itself as an organisational entity is the unit of analysis, (rather than individuals as participants). This survey is also unique because it is undertaken annually, nationally and across sport codes.

Importantly, the NSCS builds upon what National Sport Organisations, Regional Sport Organisations, Regional Sports Trusts and Clubs may already be doing in terms of surveys and gathering insights. The Project Team is working with sport organisations on the survey itself,

engaging with local communities and facilitating workshops.

In addition to building on a longitudinal set of sport club data, additional focus areas for the 2020 NSCS are COVID-19 as well “Innovation” and “Resilience”, which have never been more important for sport clubs. 2020 NSCS workshops to discuss the survey findings are being planned for Tauranga, New Plymouth and Hamilton and potentially elsewhere.

Dr. Naylor notes that “the 2020 NSCS will play a role in helping to re-imagine sport in these unprecedented times”. Association Chairman, Gordon Noble-Campbell hopes that the survey will serve to renew the focus of community sports clubs as a key element of social well-being, observing that “at a time of widespread social dislocation, community sports clubs are playing a key role in connecting people across demographics, gender, race and economic background”.

Johnsonville bowlers finish second The Johnsonville Bowling Club team of Brent Shugg, Ian Franklin, Gareth Evans and Keith Alexander made the final of the VC Elliott Cup held at Raumati Bowling Club over the weekend.

Unfortunately they were beaten in the final by the Geoff Bovey skipped Central Levin team.

Milking the rugby money teat Playing the North v South rugby match screams of the NZRU grabbing any cash they can.

With no crowd, in an empty Cake Tin on Saturday, one has to wonder exactly what the motivation is for still playing the game?

The marketing for the game will suggest it’s about North and South Island bragging rights, but it’s not.

The spin masters will say it is an All Black trial, but it’s not.

The theory is that it’s good for the public to see live sport, but it’s not.

You see, nobody cares about about the North Island or South Island bragging rights.

It’s tough enough to work out why some players are playing for one side and not the other as it is.

It’s not an All Blacks trial because we don’t need one for two reasons.

Firstly, no one knows when Ian Foster’s team will play again and secondly, the men in black have gone just fine without a trial for almost two decades.

Live sport can give the public a boost, certainly during these Coronavirus times, but I think the ultimate reason the game is going ahead is money.

Now the NZRU lose millions from playing the game behind

closed doors but what they need to do is honour the multi-million dollar contract they have with Sky Television.

That very contract which is keeping the paid TV provider in the game, so to speak.

There seems little reason for the players to risk serious injury, like they do every game they play, for a fixture so meaningless.

Late goal denies North Wellington victory

The North Wellington faithful may well have been lining up in single file at the Johnsonville Police Station on Saturday night to report a robbery. They were no doubt stunned by a goal deep into injury time to Miramar Rangers that let them nab a 2-1 win in the tightest of encounters at Alex Moore Park in round 12 of the Men’s Central Football League.

Despite the loss, it was without doubt New World Newlands North Wellington’s best all round performance of the season and there could be no better test against the top ranked side in the league.

North Wellington were challenged early when Jorge Ackers tapped in a simple ball from close range after a Miramar cross that was left unmarked with barely three minutes on the clock. The opening 20 minutes were dominated by Miramar but the momentum slowly evened up and remained that way for the remainder of the match. Both Keepers put in excellent shifts and Keegan Smith made some outrageous saves for Miramar and Nic Stanton was equally up to the challenge for Norths.

The equaliser for Norths came from Nathan Simes three minutes from the conclusion of regulation time after a fine individual effort from Fox Slotemaker who jinked down the right hand flank and calmly laid off the ball to Simes who duly converted the opportunity.

It was happy thoughts all round for the Norths crowd who were getting ready to go to the bank and lock away the point for a healthy draw. The locals’ dreams were shattered in the 92nd minute though when a goal from Aaron Spain was smashed in emphatic style and could only have been stopped if a brick wall was in place.

And then it was all over, with the visitors heading back through the Miramar Cutting with all three points safely tucked away and their one point buffer over Western Suburbs still intact.

As fate would have it, North Wellington and Miramar met again at Alex Moore on Sunday afternoon in the Men’s Premier League. Newlands Arms North Wellington was the hero this time and played the same trick in reverse on Miramar with a 2-1 victory to Norths late in the peace.

Nathan Simes pulled a double shift from the day before and got the opening goal for Norths and Jaysen Gerbes clinched the winner for Norths with just minutes to go on the clock.

The Innkeeper Johnsonville North Wellington Women were not to be outdone and pulled off a dramatic 2-1 win over Petone in the W League with goals to Grace McRobie and Nicola Ross.

In the Women’s Premier League the Innkeeper Johnsonville North Wellington team found the going a lot harder and went down 5-0, also to Petone.

In other matches in the Men’s Central League, Waterside Karori did the business over Wellington Olympic 3-2 at Karori Park and no doubt undid many an office pick in the process. Lower Hutt enjoyed a 4-2 win over their neighbours Stop Out, Western Suburbs travelled to Masterton and enjoyed a 3-0 win over Wairarapa and Napier City Rovers capped off the weekend with a 7-0 demolition job over Petone. Miramar retain their one point lead on 31 points with Wairarapa remaining on bottom place due to goal difference over Petone who also have 8 points.

The drop zone remains a constant threat as well for Stop Out on 11, North Wellington on 12 and Lower Hutt on 16 points with six rounds still to be played.
