L L I B WILLIAMS THERE’S BEEN SOMETHING FESTERING IN THE BACK OF MY BRAIN BOX FOR THE PAST COUPLE OF WEEKS NOW AND I NEED TO GET IT OFF MY CHEST. It all started when I was casually walking around Sainsbury’s minding my own business when an old supporter I have known and spoken to for many years came up to me and asked if he could have a quiet word. Unfortunately, this quiet word was something that I’m sorry to say I found totally offensive. Now, before you all get too excited, there was nothing to rude, insulting, or disparity about his words, it was just that he was spreading the usual bit of gossip, (which I don’t like anyway) by saying that he had heard chatter on the terraces that the board of directors had lost their

way, their ambition, didn’t want to get promoted and that it was time to sell! Really, I thought. Does he realise that I’m a director of the club and secondly who are all these supporters he is talking about who feel we have lost our way and think we should sell the club! To be accused of having a lack of ambition I found offensive, and I know both Terry and Oliver would have felt the same. Two weeks have passed and every day the question keeps etching away at me and I keep telling myself not to worry it’s just the usual rumours that circulate in clubs, but I keep thinking is there true discontent amongst our supporters? All my life and especially in my time with Maidstone United I have had a winning mentality and tried my hardest to be part of creating a championship team each season and this season is no different. Yes, we have made mistakes and in hindsight would most probably have done a few things differently. So, on reflection, when we set out on this journey ten years ago the policy for the future of this club was very clear and that was that every season, we would seek to gain promotion and try our utmost to take the club to the highest level of football possible, but this would have to be achieved by operating within our financial means. I get supporters and others want to join the ‘quiet word queue’ occasionally, and I do respect their opinions. I also know that Terry and Oliver are still quite prepared to hand over the reigns to somebody new if that person has genuine affection for the club and cannot only buy the club and its stadium, but also increase the playing budget in a sensible way. All the time that Terry Casey, Oliver Ash and I are managing the future of this club, we will do all in our power to get promoted, but we will never ever put the future of this club in jeopardy by spending more money each season than we know we can afford.

HAKAN

HAYRETTIN Welcome to the Gallagher Stadium for this afternoon’s match against Chippenham Town. I extend that welcome to Mike Cook, his management team and players. My thanks to all those who travelled down to Havant last Saturday. We had 10 players out for one reason or another, it was one of those backs to the wall performances and we could’ve nicked it at the end too. Whoever was on the drum last weekend, you did a great job keeping the atmosphere going – me and the lads really appreciate it. It was one of those weeks in the run up to Havant. There’s a couple of bugs doing the rounds and as soon as someone gets a cough or starts sneezing, you’re thinking about Covid again. Touch wood, that hasn’t been the case and we’re doing our best to keep on top of that by doing those lateral flow tests two or three times a week. With all due respect to those who played last Saturday and they were a credit to the club, it was a bit of a makeshift side. George Elokobi and George Fowler were out, they would’ve started. The midfield wasn’t how we’d planned it at the start of the week. Luque looked like

death warmed up but in comparison to others, he could still do an hour for me. I gave Bivesh Gurung his debut last Saturday. He’s been in training with us for the past couple of months and I signed him late Friday to give us some cover. Credit to the lad he did well when he came on and didn’t look out of place at all. This is his hometown club, which he played for as a kid before his move to Crystal Palace, and I am delighted to give him that opportunity. Speaking of opportunities, we’ve put young goalkeeper Harley Earle on a contract. He’s a regular for the under23s and he’s been in training with us this season. He’s an exciting prospect and more than earned his place at this club, his hometown one. I am pleased for him and wish him every success. Things have improved on the illness and injury front this week. We’ve got some bodies back but there are still two or three that we’ll to have a look at before picking the team this afternoon. It’s typical when you’ve got a tough week coming up. Chippenham are on a good run of form, we go to Ebbsfleet on Tuesday and then play Billericay in the Trophy next Saturday. All I can ask of you is to back us every step of the way as we do everything to turn the tide and get us back up that table.

WELCOME HOME INIESTA! A blast from the past has returned to the Gallagher Stadium. It’s a great opportunity to pop down to the Gallagher Stadium and get a Stones present for the loved ones in your life. If you’re unsure of sizing, you check the range before you buy. Opening hours until Christmas (including scheduled match days):

Michael ‘Iniesta’ Phillips has taken up a coaching role with the club’s under-23s, following the departure of Simon Austin and Joe Dowley. The 38-year-old joined the Stones in January 2011, before briefly leaving at the end of the season. He re-joined that October and made just shy of 120 appearances before his departure in September 2014. He brings a wealth of experience to his new role, having begun his career at Gillingham where he spent six seasons before injury curtailed his full-time football ambitions. As well as the Stones, he’s played non-league football with the likes of Erith Town, Ramsgate and Tonbridge Angels. “We’re delighted to welcome Michael back to the club. He was a popular character around the place during his playing days and I am sure he will be a great mentor to our players as they make that transition from youth to senior football. “Michael will be working with Tony Birchard, who heads-up our under 13s to 18s, and our academy head coach Billy Jones, to identify those players who we can bring through and benefit from this level of football. “Let me take this opportunity to thank Simon, Joe and their backroom staff who set-up the under-23s from scratch and established it as a key side in our set-up. It’s for Michael and those around him to take up that baton and help develop some of the talented youngsters we have at the club.”

SPORTS KM DESK By Craig Tucker

Reece Grant says the chance to work with Hakan Hayrettin again was the main reason he joined Maidstone.

Hayrettin is coming under pressure from a section of fans after a run of five defeats in six games in league and cup. But striker Grant, who made his Stones debut as a secondhalf substitute in the 1-0 defeat by Slough, is backing his old Braintree boss to get Maidstone firing again. “When results aren’t going your way it’s easy to point fingers and get on people’s backs but the gaffer’s experienced enough, he’s been in it a long time and we’ve got a good squad here,” said Grant, who has recovered from a pre-season knee injury. “It’s always good to reunite with a manager you’ve done well under and someone who’s helped you progress. “He helped me kick on, so to come here and play for him was the main attraction and I could see the team he was building and it was exciting. “We’ve got players who can make things happen out of nothing really. “It’s a group I wanted to be involved in and a management team I’ve worked under before.” Results have slumped since Maidstone started the season with a seven-match unbeaten run in National South. But that’s not the fault of the manager, according to Grant, who says the players have to step up. “Hakan knows how to get the best out of players and he gives out good instructions,” added Grant. “It’s just at the moment we’re not doing exactly what he’s asked of us, if we’re being honest.

“It’s not as if he says go out there and do what you want, we’ve got instructions and it’s not working for us at the moment. “There’s nothing negative I can say. “From Tuesday to Friday, we work hard on things, we’ve worked on a lot of stuff, we were doing it and then one lapse of concentration (against Slough) and we conceded. “That’s not a management problem, that’s not a tactical problem, it’s the fact we’ve switched off as players and let in a goal and we’ve not done enough to put the ball in the net going the other way. “We know as players we’ve got to do better and we know we’ve got to turn it around for the fans and for the gaffer. “It’s not as if we’ve got a bad squad, we’ve got good players here, we’ve got good management staff, we’ve just got to all come together and grind out these results and change our fortunes.” Grant won promotion from National South with Braintree three years ago. He’s confident Maidstone have what it takes to come through their blip and do likewise. “I totally believe we’ve got a changing room that can do the same thing,” said Grant. “We have a good team and the right facilities - we’ve got everything going for us. “We just need to click and it will drop for us. “We’re going through a bad patch, we’ve just got to keep our heads high and get beyond it.”

THE RETURN of replays in the FA Cup showed its value to Non-League clubs this week. The FA made the decision to scrap replays last season in order to ease fixture congestion in light of an adjusted schedule due to the pandemic. Drawn ties went straight to extra time and then penalties, if needed, to avoid a midweek rematch. There were fears among lower-league clubs that the change could become permanent but The FA reintroduced replays for this season’s competition. They were made mandatory in all rounds of the qualifying competition and up to and including the fourth round proper. In 1991, penalties were introduced after the first replay to avoid a series of rematches. It was 50 years ago last weekend when it took Alvechurch and Oxford City 17 days and six games to reach a conclusion. Their five fourth round qualifying replays – 1-1, 1-1, 0-0, 0-0, 1-0 – after the initial tie finished 2-2 broke the previous record of nine hours, 40 minutes set in the 1924-25 season by Leyton and Ilford. The FA’s eventual rule change was welcomed. On Tuesday and Wednesday of this week, the benefit of replays were laid bare. Solihull Moors were picked for broadcast by ITV4 when they took on League One side Wigan Athletic in front of a sell-out crowd. Stockport County didn’t have a seat to spare either when over 10,000 packed into Edgeley Park on Wednesday night for their replay against Bolton Wanderers, with the BBC cameras in attendance. Each club also received a healthy FA broadcast fee of £32,500 to go along with their bumper admission revenue. Both nights promised to be memorable for new fans and

old but the ties wouldn’t have happened had it not been for replays. There is, however, another way of looking at the dynamic replays can create. On their way to a third round clash with Tottenham Hotspur last season, Marine twice won on penalties. The first was in a second round qualifying tie at Runcorn Linnets before winning again on spot kicks at EFL side Colchester United in the first round proper. If Marine were to have played a replay against the League Two side, arguably, their FA Cup run might have ended sooner and Jose Mourinho and co. wouldn’t have stepped foot inside Rossett Park. Alternatively, St Albans City have benefitted three times from replays in their adventure to the second round proper this season. They beat Concord Rangers, Met Police and CorinthianCasuals all on home soil after drawing in the away tie. Sometimes, though, replays will give the opportunity for a once in a lifetime opportunity. Josh Coulson, the Southend United centre-back, always joked he was glad he headed a good chance over the bar late on for Cambridge United against Manchester United in a huge FA Cup fourth round proper clash. The reason being was it meant the U’s ended up drawing 0-0 and would take on the likes of Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie United in a replay at Old Trafford with 74,511 in attendance. With replays scrapped from the fifth round onwards, the top-flight clubs should be happy enough to let the lower-league sides keep on having their big days in the famous cup. VILLAGEGNEYM MAIDSTO

Alcohol Awareness Week is an annual event, which is organised by the charity Alcohol Concern. Their aim is to raise awareness of alcohol abuse, and with the festive season right around the corner, and alcohol sales seeing a dramatic incline during the pandemic, this message may just be more imperative than ever.

Alcohol and Fitness In case you didn’t know, there is a strong, somewhat opposing, relationship between our beloved alcohol and fitness. In short, alcohol decreases your physical fitness levels and hampers your ability to reach your fitness goals. In excess, alcohol can cause a multitude of health problems from high blood pressure and heart disease to stroke, cancer and you guessed it - even death. If you are considering cutting back on all things ethanolsoaked, then the winter months are the perfect time to do just that. The New Year is a great place to start if you are sober-curious, when it’s chilly out and the festivities are over there is a lot less pressure to drink due to the lack of events taking place. In all honesty, everyone is skint and dealing with a monthlong hangover in January, so why not take that time to make some healthier choices? It will make a huge difference to the way you think, feel and look.

The Alcohol Effect Now, it’s important that you know we’re not here to tell you to go teetotal or completely abstain from alcohol, we’re simply here to let you know the effect that it can have on

your physical and mental health, along with the effect it has on your fitness levels. However, if, after reading this, you decide you want to know more on how to create a better relationship with alcohol then that’s great! If you do, then you won’t be alone. A revolution is happening and the numbers seem to suggest that drinking habits are changing. In fact, the most recent numbers show that nearly a third of 16-24 year olds don’t drink at all! If that doesn’t sound like a bit of you, then that’s fine. Rather than declaring yourself a non-drinker, you may consider yourself to be sober-curious. In short, this term simply means that you want to become more aware of the motivations behind the reason you consume alcohol.

The Benefits of Cutting Back The benefits of cutting back reach far beyond the way you look, but also the way that you think and the way you feel. You will notice that you have more energy and feel less tired during the day; which is great when you’re taking part in a fitness regime. You will also see a huge shift in your ability to concentrate and make decisions. On top of all of that, alcohol is dehydrating (ever woken up after a night out gasping for a glass of water?), so not only will your skin feel more hydrated, but you’re less prone to fine lines and premature ageing. In terms of weight, drinking too much could have been the main reason behind why you weren’t hitting your fitness goals as quickly as you would have liked. Drinking in excess means that you’re consuming too many calories, which causes you to pile on the pounds. When you cut down, alongside a better diet and a fitness regime, you can lose weight and feel fitter.
