L L I B WILLIAMS WHAT DO YOU NEED TO CREATE A SUCCESSFUL TEAM?

Last week, for the very first time in ages, I was asked to speak to our first year academy students and the subject that we were discussing was what were the ingredients that are required to build a successful football team, who consistently compete at the top level and win trophies. This is something that I must have thought through many times over the years, but something no-one had asked me recently! I started by saying that in my opinion, to create a successful team there must be several important individual elements all working in unison towards the same goal. For example, a car wouldn’t run properly if you removed its wheels, breaks, or engine. In the same vein, a football team cannot build success unless all the parts do their job properly. So, what are the parts that build the anatomy of a successful football team?

Goalkeeper The last line of defence, the person who can prevent the other team scoring. Every successful football team requires a strong goalkeeper who can lead the line from between the sticks. Someone who instils confidence because he doesn’t make mistakes. He allows the outfield players to concentrate on their game, knowing the keeper will be there to save the day if the opposition breaks through.

Defence A strong defence not only helps protect the goalkeeper and prevent the opposition scoring, but it is also where most attacks

The engine room of the team. Midfielders will have to be all things rolled into one player. They must be strong in all elements of the game, putting in fantastic defensive work with tackling, blocking, and marking. Errorless and pin-point accurate passing and hold-up play will keep possession and control the tempo of the game, whilst they will also be required to go forward and attack, assisting the strikers and scoring the occasional goal. Striker/Forwards Where the goals come from. The strikers and forward players are those who are expected to put pressure on the opposition defence, hold the ball up to bring attacking midfielders and other forwards into play, and score the vital goals to win games

Manager Every successful team requires a good manager. The manager is the one who must select the best available players, formation, and tactics to win every match. They must make tough calls, like dropping an out-of-form but popular player, and they are undoubtedly the one who takes the criticism when things go wrong. Picking up the players and rebuilding confidence after a heavy defeat, gentle man-management, and rip-roaring motivational team talks are all part of this role. A great manager can turn average players into fantastic ones, who in turn will lead their team to glory.

Captain The motivational, calming, and confidence building influence on the pitch. A fantastic captain isn’t always the best player in the team. They are the one who always gives 100% regardless of the score, leads by example, picks their players up if things aren’t going to plan, settles down any angry situations, and constantly thrives to motivate their teammates to up their performance levels.

Set-Piece Taker A great set-piece taker can turn a game with one moment of magic. Again, these players may not be the most skilful, or the fastest, but they have a role in the team and a time when all hope lies at their feet. Good set-piece takers change games with an in-swinging corner which is aimed at a teammates head with pinpoint accuracy, a direct free-kick swerved around the wall straight into the top corner, or a long throw into the box. When a set-piece is given, the crowd get more excited, expectation is raised, and there is a great amount of pressure on the person taking it. The type of set-piece taker in a great team can handle the pressure and be a match winner. I’m sure that there are other things that will come into play to build a successful team, but these are the seven simple football ingredients which over the years have gone a long way to help me bake the perfect football team cake.

HAKAN

HAYRETTIN Welcome to the Gallagher Stadium for this afternoon’s match against Dorking Wanderers. I extend that welcome to Marc White, his management team and players. Our two clubs worked together a lot last season, challenging the league’s board and others as the pandemic wrote off another season. I know from my conversations with Oliver, how important the likes of Marc were in trying to bring some common sense to what were extremely challenging times. It’s a reminder that while we are rivals on the pitch, we have a lot in common off of it and the way so many clubs came together last season was one positive we can take from the last 18 months. We had a blank Saturday last weekend but took the opportunity to get out and watch some games involving our next opponents and some players too. We do our due diligence on every team and I am fortunate to have a

good network around me who go around the grounds and report back. We’ve trained hard this week and had three really good sessions going into today’s game. The boys are looking fit and sharp and ready for what will be a tough test. Hopefully that break has done us some good, we can draw a line under the last two games and move on with the season. Spirits are high, we’re second in the league, we’ve got our fans back on the terraces – everything’s in place to have a real go this season. I am sure you’ve seen on the website that I’ve brought Hady Ghandour in on a month’s loan from Charlton and want to thank Steve Avery for his assistance in making that happen. I’ve known Hady since his days at Tooting & Mitcham and I am delighted to get him here. He’s looked lively in training and will be a good addition for us. Let me finish by congratulating Jack Barham and his partner Jade on the arrival of their baby boy yesterday. Fantastic news and I wish your family of three every happiness.

NEWS

Charlton’s Ghandour joins the Stones on-loan Striker Hady Ghandour has joined the Stones on-loan from Charlton Athletic. It’s been a whirlwind 15 months for the 21-year-old who joined the League One side from Tooting & Mitcham last summer. A regular in the Addicks’ under23s last season, he made his first team debut in a League Trophy fixture in November 2020 and his international debut for Lebanon last month. Stones boss Hakan Hayrettin said: “I’ve known about Hady since his days at Tooting and at that time it was only a matter of when, not if, he’d get picked up by a league club. “He’s had a good year at Charlton but is at that stage where he needs to test himself in the men’s game. We’re delighted to give him that opportunity and he’s keen to make the most of it for him and for us.”

This match will be segregated and tickets for the away end are available from https://fleetlive.club/product/ eufc-v-maidstone-united-awayfans/.

E N O T S D I A M MONOPOLY The home of the Stones is appearing on one of the world’s best known board games. Gallagher Stadium features on Maidstone Monopoly – a special edition of the property trading game. All the famous multi-coloured MONOPOLY property squares like Mayfair Park Lane are occupied by leading landmarks from Maidstone - and most of the Chance and Community Chest cards are themed around Kent’s county town. One card sends you on a free guided VIP tour of Leeds Castle, whilst another hands players lots of MONOPOLY money as a celebration for Maidstone United winning the league! Maidstone landed the honour of its very own customised MONOPOLY game – after seeing off 24 other places across Europe to win the accolade and beating runner-up Chartres in France. The announcement was made in March. At the time of the announcement the public was invited to suggest Maidstone landmarks and charities to feature in the game. A gigantic replica of the board game was rolled out at Leeds Castle on Thursday. The showpiece Castle gets to land on the top ranked square and most expensive on the board, replacing glitzy Mayfair from the game’s classic London original. To buy Leeds Castle players will have to pay four hundred MONOPOLY dollars. A hotel can be built on the site for one thousand of the dollars. Several charities get to feature in the game as well, following a separate public vote. They include Heart of

Kent Hospice, featuring on its very own Community Chest square in the upper reaches of the board. In between Leeds Castle (replacing Mayfair) and Archbishop’s Palace (Old Kent Road) – which reside at the top and bottom of the board - are the great and good of the town, including Maidstone Museum (Oxford Street), the Hazlitt Theatre (Coventry Street) and Gallagher Stadium (Piccadilly) and many more. The four train stations (in ascending MONOPOLY order) are: Maidstone East train station (King’s Cross); Maidstone West (Marylebone); Maidstone Barracks (Fenchurch Street) and the Miniature Railway (Liverpool Street) at Mote Park. The new game is on sale now from all good toy and bookstores across Maidstone including Asda, Ryman, Waterstones, WHSmith and The Works – as well as extensively online, including on Amazon.

8. Matt Briggs // MIDFIELD Now in his seventh season at Meadowbank, Matt was born and raised in Tyneside and is a graduate of the famous Wallsend Boys Club and Blackburn FC. A pacey winger, feared by full backs, he has a great goal scoring record with many important match winning strikes since his arrival and has been part of two promotion-winning squads.

9. Jason Prior // FORWARD A widely-regarded striker who is starting his fourth season with Dorking, Jason has Football League experience with AFC Wimbledon. He signed for The Wanderers ahead of the 2018/19 season from Havant & Waterlooville, where his 40 goals in 80 games had earned his team promotion to the National League. Jason netted 24 times in his first season at Meadowbank and was just short of that figure in the 2019/20 season. He has also played for Moneyfields, Dartford and Bognor, where he had a successful partnership with Alfie Rutherford.

18. Luke Moore // MIDFIELD

One of four new signings ahead of the 2020/21 season, Alfie is a star of the future who is guaranteed to become a fan favourite. Despite being only 23, he has a wealth of Step 2 experience, having played in the National League with Havant and Waterlooville for two seasons. He has also played for Bognor Regis Town.

The former AFC Wimbledon man is now in his fifth season with The Wanderers having previously played league football with 168 appearances for The Dons, as well as receiving a call up to the England C team. Early on in his career he also made 123 senior appearances for Ebbsfleet, having been in their youth squad since 2006.

11. James McShane // MIDFIELD In his sixth season with the club, Macca is always one of the first names on Marc White’s teamsheet. A naturally gifted and highly skilled footballer with an eye for goal, he has played for several Scottish League teams (including Clyde) and more locally for Chipstead, Egham and Molesey. He has now made more than 200 appearances and scored more than 60 goals in the Red and White.

12. Callum Kennedy // DEFENDER Signed in March 2020, having made more than 250 appearances for several league teams including Swindon, Scunthorpe, AFC Wimbledon and Orient, Callum joined from Billericay and adds Football League experience to the backbone of the team.

19. Giuseppe Sole // FORWARD Since joining The Wanderers in November 2016, Gez has scored some fantastic goals and he is renowned as a dead-ball specialist. A legend at his home club of Woking, he scored 111 goals in 352 appearances for The Cardinals and like Luke, also had the honour of playing for the England C team.

20. Dan Gallagher // MIDFIELD Dan joined The Wanderers from Leatherhead in August 2019. He is a versatile midfielder who can also play in defence across the back three. Having been at AFC Wimbledon since he was 10 years old, Dan represented the first team there during the 2014/15 season, before moving to Kingstonian and Leatherhead.

22. Barry Fuller // DEFENDER Barry signed last August from Gillingham following his second spell at the League One club, where he made a total of 195 appearances either side of playing 205 games for AFC Wimbledon. Barry is club captain and recently signed a two-year extension with The Wanderers.

23. Wes Fogden // MIDFIELD

16. Nicky Wheeler // MIDFIELD

Now in his second season with The Wanderers, Wes is sure to boost Dorking’s promotion hopes. Brighton-born, he played professionally for Bournemouth, Portsmouth and Yeovil Town and made more than 400 senior appearances for several other south coast teams, including most recently Havant & Waterlooville.

Bringing yet more experience to the midfield, Nicky joined in January 2020 but injury kept him side-lined until the end of that season where he performed well in the play-offs. Having started at Charlton, Nicky went on to play for Tonbridge Angels, Dagenham, Billericay and Woking.

29. Callum Kealy // FORWARD Callum joined from Sutton United in June. He hails from Sydney, Australia and moved to England to further his career, joining the Brighton and Hove Albion U18 team in July 2015, before moving to Lewes FC and then to Worthing.

17. Josh Taylor // MIDFIELD

37. Stuart Nelson // GOALKEEPER

Joined from Havant & Waterlooville in May 2021, Josh is a dynamic midfielder who can play defensively and attack-minded. After spending four years in the USA on a scholarship, he was at Sutton United for two seasons before moving to The Hawks.

An experienced goalkeeper who has made nearly 600 appearances at football league level, including 139 games for Brentford and 223 for Gillingham, where he played from 2012 to 2018, during which time he was selected for the League Two team of the year.

Now in his second season, he is a box-to-box midfielder with a great engine. Kane joined from Eastbourne Borough, having previously played for Brighton, Ebbsfleet and Bognor Regis.

SPORTS KM DESK By Craig Tucker

Lee Worgan treasured the chance to say a proper goodbye to Maidstone fans - three years after leaving the club.

Worgan played at the Gallagher for the first time since joining Dover in 2018, keeping a clean sheet in a 2-0 victory for Eastbourne Borough a fortnight ago. United’s biggest crowd of the season - 2,382 - were there as Worgan returned to the club where he made 289 appearances in five years, winning two promotions. The old Worgan songs were dusted down as the 37-year-old goalkeeper was given a great reception by Stones fans. “It was brilliant,” said Worgan. “Put the result aside, I was just looking forward to coming back. “Although I left a few years ago now, I’ve not had the opportunity to come back and play and almost thank everyone and have that goodbye. I loved it. “I’ve got to thank the fans. I thought they were absolutely outstanding. “They’ve given me a fair bit of stick when they needed to during the game but it was nice to see so many people. “The club’s in my heart so it was really nice to come back and get such a good reception. “You don’t forget what it’s like with the atmosphere and the noise but when you haven’t been here for a long time you tend to lose how impressive it is and how every game is such an occasion. “I said to our boys, you won’t go anywhere else, probably up to League 1, where you’re going to get this sort of atmosphere, this kind of experience and for some of our young players it was brilliant.

“I’ll always love this place to bits. I’d love to see the club get promoted back to where it deserves to be just for the fans. It’s such a special place to me.” Worgan, who started this season with Dorking, turns 38 in December and knows the clock is ticking on his career. He has half an eye on playing at 40 but will know when the time is right to call it a day. “I’ve been getting into ice-baths and taking these shakes that I used to hammer the younger players for,” he said. “I’m trying everything because you want as many days like today as you can. “I’m not stupid, I know it’s coming towards that time, but I’ve probably got a year or so left, this season and maybe another one. “All the time I feel fit and able, I’ll keep playing. “You do think about playing at 40. Funnily enough, I spoke to Stuart Nelson who’s just signed for Dorking. “He’s 40 and in much better shape than me, he’s in phenomenal shape, he could run a marathon twice a week. “You think, could I do it at 40? But what I don’t want to do is be that person who’s trying to cling on to something. “I’d like to finish my career with some self-respect and leave it with a legacy that I’ve built. “I don’t want to try and play at 41/42 and be having nightmares every week. “I’m pretty honest with myself, I’ll know when the time is right to finish.”

By David Richardson

THERE’S no greater buzz among Non-League supporters than experiencing the magic of the FA Cup. That thrill of seeing your hometown club pitched against the elite in the world’s greatest cup competition. There’s simply nothing like it. Sadly, though, the FA Cup gods can’t shine down on everyone and it takes a sprinkling of dust from Lady Luck herself at times in order to keep the dream alive. Take Horsham FC for example. After celebrating a famous win over Woking – two levels their superior – in the fourth qualifying round last Saturday, Hornets fans would be forgiven for getting carried away while glued to the televised first-round draw on Sunday lunchtime. Their reward…a trip to Carlisle United – a round trip of 682 miles for a game which wouldn’t really over-excite the TV companies ready to potentially place them in the nation’s spotlight. Understandably, the Hornets would have looked on in awe at fellow Isthmian Leaguers AFC Sudbury, whose reward for becoming the first team to beat National League South leaders Dartford this season was a mouth-watering home clash against League Two neighbours Colchester United – a tie which will almost certainly whet the appetite of those either side of the Suffolk/Essex border. My message to Horsham, however, is fear not. The magic of the FA Cup has not passed you by just yet. As local sports editor, I remember covering Farnborough Town’s path to the fourth round of the cup back in 2002-03. After a handsome first-round victory over Harrogate, the town was filled with anticipation until they were handed a rather underwhelming trip to Southport in round two. Still, the run went on, however, as Boro came through 3-0 against the 10-man Sandgrounders to book their place in the third round for the first time in the club’s history.

Premier League and Championship big guns lay in wait but Farnborough’s reward was a depressing 540-mile round trip to League Two Darlington in the snow! Talk about a damp squib! Incredibly, Graham Westley’s side came through that too, winning 3-2 in arctic conditions to make the hat for round four. Third time lucky, Premier League champions Arsenal were their just rewards and despite a 5-1 defeat to Arsene Wenger’s star-studded Gunners side in a tie eventually switched to Highbury, the club enjoyed their finest hour – a day that could never be taken away from a support base starved of success for so long. The same could also be said for Lincoln City. Non-League football’s best ever FA Cup run to the last eight in 2016-17 saw the National League Imps come through low-profile trips to Championship duo Ipswich Town and Brighton & Hove Albion to take their place in the fifth round. Again, the giants of English football lie in wait but Lincoln were instead paired with a trip to Burnley where their run was expected to end with a whimper and without the fanfare it thoroughly deserved. Not so, as Sean Raggett’s 89th-minute header earned Danny Cowley’s side the most famous win in their history and an eventual quarter-final clash with Arsenal at the Emirates. The rest, as they say, is history, as far as Lincoln are concerned. You see, Horsham may well be cursing their luck right now and wondering if the FA Cup gods will ever shine on their plush new Camping World Community Stadium in West Sussex. Hope, though, as Farnborough and Lincoln proved, is still on the horizon and but there’s still time for the magic of the cup to be conjured. As Del Boy would say in Only Fools and Horses…“He who dares, wins!”

VILLAGE

GYM NE TO MAIDS

We all know that yoga is good for us… but do you know exactly why? There have been numerous studies performed over the years to examine the effects of yoga. These studies have found that regular yoga can benefit a number of health factors and produce significant effects on psychological wellbeing. Here’s what you need to know… Yoga can benefit your psychological health Stressed? Tired? Burned out? Yoga could just be the answer! Research shows that Yoga is effective in treating emotional-stress related conditions when compared with mindful exercises such as qigong and tai chi. Research shows the effects of yoga on depression were comparable to that of pharmacological treatment, group therapy and social support groups. Regularly practicing yoga has the potential to improve your quality of life and ease the symptoms of stress and anxiety. There are physiological health benefits Yoga can do wonders for your physiological health, particularly for older adults. It can help to improve strength, cardiorespiratory function and balance. Yoga has also been linked to improving a variety of other health outcomes including blood glucose (helping to avoid diabetes), stress indicators, cholesterol and diastolic blood pressure. Given the limited evidence to date, we are unable to determine the effects of yoga in the primary prevention of cardiovascular disease.

Can help with weight loss Practicing yoga has been shown to be an effective method to reduce body weight in overweight adults. A study found that gradual, moderate reductions in weight and BMI were seen when Yoga was practiced for 60 minutes, three times per week for three months or more. Yoga is shown to be an appropriate and potentially successful intervention for prevention of obesity, and risk reduction for diseases in which obesity plays a significant causal role. There are plenty of other benefits too There is strong evidence to suggest that yoga plays a part in the reduction of lower back pain with Hatha and Restorative yoga having the highest correlation with positive outcomes for managing pain. Yoga has also been found to help with sleep and feelings of fatigue, particularly in patients with cancer. Yoga can be advantageous for pregnant women Studies show that practicing yoga during pregnancy can have a number of benefits throughout the pregnancy, labour and birth. Improvements were observed on psychological factors during pregnancy and labour, on physical and pain measures during labour and on birth weight and number of preterm births.
