A ‘fair’ chance to learn about Madison County Plain City comes alive with the sound of the threshers By Dusty Parker I can smell the beautiful scent of funnel cakes now! Your Madison County Fair is almost here with Grandstand events, rides and entertainment starting on Sunday, July 8. If you haven’t visited the Fair in a while, we encourage you to stop by for some great wholesome entertainment, to celebrate the great projects of youth and adults in Madison County and to see some of the improvements we have made to your Fairgrounds. Did I mention fair food? Who can argue with a cup full of fair fries and malt vinegar? Yum! The Madison County Fair is a celebration of community. It combines our agricultural heritage with our fascination and commitment to the ingenuity and hard work of Madison Countians. Let’s not forget cotton candy and steam thresher made ice cream! Amidst the games and carnival rides lives the spirit of Madison County. The Fair gives us a chance to rediscover who we are as a community and to re-acquaint ourselves with our neighbors. I also will be re-acquainting myself with a Texas tenderloin sandwich. Did I mention fair food?

thing for everyone at the Madison County Fair. We even have a full schedule of great music! I hope to see you there, and I’ll try to remember to leave you some food. Mmmm ‌ fair food. Photo courtesy of Jeff Pfeil

By Sean Hughes “Puff, puff, puff, puff ‌ BOOM!â€? No, Plain City isn’t the home to some new age rock band. It is, however, the home to the annual Miami Valley Steam Threshers Association’s annual show and reunion. In its 63rd year, this year’s show and reunion features “Allis Chalmers: The Gathering of the Orangeâ€? by the Buckeye Allis Club. The Buckeye Allis Club was formed in 1996 at our very own Red Brick Tavern by a group of Allis-Chalmers tractor enthusiasts led by current president Larry Mayer and current trustee George Schulz. If you haven’t been a steam threshers show, you are in for a treat. Kids are especially delighted to see these workhorses parade down Main Street on their way to the show grounds at Pastime Park. And workhorses they are! The show exhibits ongoing demonstrations of these steam engine machines milling, bailing and, of course, threshing. As with any show, the Steam Threshers show offers food galore, some of which is produced using steam powered equipment, and games and entertainment such as blacksmiths and music. The main focus of the show, though, is history. History buffs will exalt in the display of engi-

13 years of fun at the London Wiffleball Tournament By Megan Greve

Like many others when they hit their 13th birthday, the London Wiffleball Tournament is about one thing: fun. “For me, the tourney is about having as much fun as possible,” Brian Wheeler, commissioner of the tournament, says. “Hitting tons of home runs, seeing old friends and meeting new wiffleballers from around the country is very exciting.” With upwards of 50 teams coming from more than 16 states, this one-day “mega tournament” attracts them all to the Bogenrife farm. The fun happens on July 14, when teams in the adult (ages 6-64) and youth (15 and younger) leagues compete in a tournament similar to those in soccer: everyone plays in a four-game round robin, then goes to the “Big Dance” tournament to take home the trophy. Apart

“For me, the tourney is about having as much fun as possible.” Brian Wheeler, commissioner of the London Wiffleball Tournament from the main tournament there is also a home run derby, where each team can nominate a player to bring home the hardware. Prizes and t-shirts are awarded to first place and runner-up in both the wiffleball tournament and the home run derby. Don’t be fooled into thinking this is some amateur event. Wheeler says there will be food, drinks, umpires and 18 custom-built fields. But even the participants themselves take it up a notch, as Wheeler says most arrive with custom t-shirts for their teams. “It’s always enjoyable to see what each team is wearing,” he says. For the 2012 event, Wheeler says there will be “new custom fields with tons of new gimmicks for the fields, with new designs and dimensions.” Fundraising from this year’s event will benefit the London High School baseball team, who will be building and tearing down the fields. Anyone interested in taking part in the action can register at the tournament’s Website, www.londonwiffleball.com. The entry fee for adult teams is $100 and $40 for youth teams. Payments for the teams must be made by July 6, so hurry: this is one 13th celebration you won’t want to miss.

Busy running your business, let US market it for you Your Madison County Chamber of Commerce’s In-House Marketing Firm is half way through its second year in existence and has helped over a dozen small businesses develop brand campaigns, marketing plans and marketing budgets, etc. Photo courtesy of Brian Wheeler

What is an In-House Marketing Firm? Quite honestly, we only know of one other that is offered as an investor service in the US. We do everything you would expect from a marketing or advertising agency but for a LOT less because we are geared towards small businesses. At $10 for a full hour of work on your project or tactics, you can’t beat us! That $10 per hour gets you not one, but three staff members working on any given item. We not only help you with branding and strategy, we also do the tactical things that you don’t want to do or don’t have time for such as press releases, collateral and advertising development, Facebook and social media management, Web site development and management and more! For things we do not do ourselves as a Chamber staff, we’ll work with your budget (the one we hopefully developed with you) and find a Chamber investor vendor such a designer, Web developer, promotional item salesperson, etc. to do some of the tactical things. By doing this, we aren’t only saving you money, but we also are saving you time and headaches. WE manage the processes of working with these vendors for you and pull you in for approvals, etc. at the appropriate times. We don’t let you get bogged down by the small details. Don’t let your business fail because you didn’t market it properly! Contact us and we’ll help your business soar to new marketing heights! You don’t have to be large to market yourself properly.

See us at the Madison Co. Fair, July 7-14
