Cobra show rev’s up London By David Jackson

Formed in 2004, the OCC is a group of fun loving and benevolent car enthusiasts with a passion for high performance cars and helping ill children. The organizations charity sponsor is The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, to whom the Ohio Cobra Club has donated nearly $700,000 since 2006.

London, Ohio has been welcoming the thunder of the Cobra car show for the last six years. On Saturday, June 23, experience the thrill of doing burnouts on Main Street in beautiful downtown London as the Cobra owners give rides to some of the many spectators to raise money for charity. In conjunction with the London Strawberry Festival each year, the Cobra show immerses visitors in the Cobra experience by taking in the hundreds of beautifully crafted cars of all different makes and color combinations; including Cobra’s, Daytona Coupe’s and GT40 replicas as well as a multitude of engine conďŹ gurations. Show attendees also have the opportunity to buy t-shirts and other memorabilia, visit booths of the many vendors who attend the show each year and enjoy great food and drinks. Organized by the Ohio Cobra Club (OCC), The London Cobra Show is more than just a car show. It’s also a social event and charity fundraiser.

Quarter midget racing, a family oriented sport for children ages 5-16, teaches children to race a 1/4 scale version of a midget race car on an oval track that is approximately 1/20 of a mile. In addition to learning competitive driving skills, children also learn good sportsmanship, self-reliance, and responsibility. Win or lose, quarter midget drivers end a race with a sense of pride and accomplishment.

The COQMRA 2012 schedule features over twenty races, including the regional race on August 4-5 and the Dave King Memorial Race-Honda Shoot Out on September 8. In addition to regular races and an exhibition race during the Fair (July 7-14), Arrive and Drive events encourage local children to get in on the action. Arrive and Drive events are scheduled for July 21 and September 1.

Learn more about quarter midget racing at www.coqmra.com or come watch a race at the Fairgrounds. The next race is June 9. Spectators are always welcome!

Your Madison County Chamber of Commerce and economic development agency, Madison County Future, Inc. Community Improvement Corporation, presented Darlington with a $1,000 grant for her business, the Gateway Shoppes of West Jefferson.

Chamber Credit Card Processing Program through First Data

We welcome our new Chamber & Community Investors! (April 2012)

By David Jackson At its 2012 Bonanza Annual Meeting and Gala, the Madison County Chamber of Commerce awarded Marci Darlington as the 2012 Madison County Entrepreneur of the Year.

Madison Monthly June 2012 Vol. 1, Issue 3

• Golden Services 3 (Sandi Golden-Vest) 204 Maple St. (Warehouse A), London • Mt. Sterling Community Center (Carrie Mason) 164 E. Main St, Mt.Sterling • NESCO Resource (Joni Wickline) 3142 Broadway Suite 201, Grove City

Thanks to our renewed Chamber & Community Investors! (Those who renewed in April 2012.) • James Herman, DVM • MT Business Technologies

“I have had so much support and direction through this process. The Chamber of Commerce and the West Jefferson Business Council, the Village of West Jefferson and the community have all helped to make the Gateway Shoppes idea a reality. It feels good to be a part of the new growth of West Jefferson,” said Marci Darlington.

The FDIS Central Ohio has created a program specifically for Madison County Chamber of Commerce investors to offer credit card, PINsecured and signature debit card, and Telecheck electronic check processing and check warranty services at preferred rates. It’s tough to know which offer is the best one for your business. Our partner Mark Elliott of FDIS Central Ohio offers a free analysis to help you make the right choice for your business. Mobile pay and wireless solutions FDIS Central Ohio offers a wide variety of product solutions that enables merchants to seamlessly transform their devices into full-featured credit card processing terminals. All of these products offer unprecedented reliability, flexibility and cost-efficiency, and exceed the most stringent security standards. “My clients know and rely on the fact that if they have a question or need something they can call me personally to get a quick solution and tell me that the kind of personal service I provide them is unheard of these days. It is a huge complement to hear that not only did I help them save money but also provided them with the far best service experience ever as compared to their previous processors,” said Mark Elliott

Darlington opened the Gateway Shoppes of West Jefferson, located at 6 W. Main St. in downtown West Jefferson, Ohio, in October of 2011 and has quickly grown it to capacity, showcasing the treasures and talents of over 20 vendors both in her store and online at wjgatewayshoppes.com

“This is the second year of the Madison County Entrepreneur of the Year award. We are very pleased to be able to offer this funding for our local entrepreneurs,” said Dusty Parker, President of the Madison County Future, Inc. Community Improvement Corporation Board of Directors and Chamber Board Director. “We have been trying to figure out how we can support small businesses with grants and revolving loans for a few years now,” said Sean Hughes, Executive Director of the Madison Co. Chamber of Commerce and Madison Co. Future, Inc. “This was a huge step for us. The funds were completely provided by the boards of both organizations. If we want to continue to see these types of programs, we will need more Madison County investors to contribute to such programs. One of the things we are helping small businesses do is called “crowd funding.” We are working with entrepreneurs to set up online proposals and let people make contributions towards their businesses and projects.”

151 W. Main St. Plain City, OH 43064 614-733-0025

“In the case of The Gateway Shoppes, we had worked on this business concept for over a year and when we came across Marci to take on the project, we were blessed! She has really taken the concept and grown it in a very short time. We’d like to see these types of shops in each of our Madison County communities,” Hughes said.

Made in the Shade RC club a diamond in the dirt Words By David Jackson/Photos by Jim Rinaldi of Wide Studios You may have seen the Wamsley’s purple home on your travels between London and West Jeff with that pinwheel sign in the front yard. Take a moment to pull over and you’ll discover the Made in the Shade RC Club; an all-dirt radio control track complete with lane barriers, jumps and an advanced lap timing system for RC cars and trucks to race against the clock and each other. Enthusiast Mark Wamsley and his wife Susan, both longtime Madison County residents, opened Made in the Shade this past April. After almost two months of construction, 80 tons of dirt and years of property beautiďŹ cation, the completed track spans an impressive 7,200 square feet and features a 120 foot banked oval combined with an off-road course.

For those of you considering giving RC cars a try, Mark says the investment is fun and very much worth it. “You can get an RC car like this for around $200 to $500. Passion for all things fun and unique was clear when talking with the Wamsley family. “Life is too short not to have fun. That’s really why we do this, said Susan. And fun it is! With Mark demonstrating and RC cars airborne, Susan adds, “These aren’t just your average off the shelf RC toys you get at a department store. These will go 40-100mph. Oval racing will be available at Made in the Shade on Friday evenings under the lights and Sunday afternoons with a wide range of entry fees, starting at around $10. Yearly racing memberships are also available. The club is accessible three days a week for open practice runs weather permitting and expects to be open through mid-November. A full race schedule and videos of all the action are available at the attractions Facebook page.

When asked about the origins of the name, Mark shared, “Most RC tracks tend to be in the sun, often on hot blacktop parking lots. Our track offers shade and scenery so it just seemed to ďŹ t.â€?

Visit Made in the Shade at 5939 St. Rt. 142 SE, half way between West Jefferson and London. Learn more at 614-306-3361 or on Facebook by searching for “Made in the Shade RC club.

Mark is no stranger to those other tracks. He’s been tinkering the RC cars for nearly two decades and is on his second homegrown RC track. “My ďŹ rst track was a clay oval that was inside. We have a lot more freedom being outside now,â€? said Mark.

Amateur mistakes We’re sorry, but in the May issue of Madison Monthly we made some amateur mistakes in “The Fisher Farm, Madison County Agricultural Heritage.â€? • Mr. Fisher’s name is Derek and not “Derrick.â€? • The Fisher Farm was the Buehl’s Seed Farm and not a “Bull feed farm.â€? • The farm stopped being a dairy farm in the late ‘70s instead of becoming one in the ‘80s. • Both Fishers received Associates of Applied Science in Livestock Science from Ohio State ATI. • “Pasture cutleryâ€? should have been “pastured poultry.â€? • To visit the farm, they ask that people please call or email ďŹ rst for an appointment.

Jerry Alcott awarded Madison County Chamber of Commerce’s Bell Ringer award At its 2012 Bonanza Annual Meeting and Gala, the Madison County Chamber of Commerce awarded Jerry Alcott with its prestigious Bell Ringer Award. The Bell Ringer Award is presented by the Madison County Chamber of Commerce each year to an investor who best exempliďŹ es the aims and purposes of the Madison County Chamber of Commerce and who gives unselďŹ shly of his or her time, efforts and resources for the betterment of the Madison County community. “Jerry has long been a supporter of his Chamber of Commerce and we are grateful for his continued contributions,â€? said Michael Boerger of Boerger Farms and the Chamber’s Board President. Alcott is the owner of BST Trucking, Inc. in London, Ohio. BST, or Building Systems Transportation, is a national freight carrier, broker and regional warehouse with over 100 trucks in their eet. BST has been an invested Chamber member for over two decades.
