Stair box design following Gothic architecture

Task #1 Designing Material System Design a material system out of the combination of planar and linear wood elements.

The material system should be designed as a 3D spatial system.

The design of the material system should be adaptive enough to be applied on different scale and typology of architectural objects.

Gothic Approach This system of using sticks are acting like tree structures which have been used in gothic architecture as well. So it has the potential to be duplcated in Z direction to form another levels.

The diagrams below are showing this system overall.

Duplication of the concept and growing in Z direction

To start designing the material system with sticks and plates, there was the idea of formable surfaces and panelization system of surfaces by sub-dividing them. Which this strategy it has been tried to define a material system. In this example after the surface would be formed and panelized to some smaller squares, to apply the sticks, I took the four corners of each square. Four sticks would be applied on the corners and they’ll meet each other on a center point which has the same X,Y coordinate as the squares center point but with a lower Z coordinate.

So we’ll have one center point for each square in a level just lower than the surface. From these center point we will apply another stick just straight to the ground. Although the four corner sticks have the same size, the second level of sticks (straight ones) have different lenghts to touch the ground. in this system we would need two kind of joineries. On on the center point, where four sticks meet each other and the other one the joint of straight sticks from this point the ground.

Applying the material system to design a stair.

Joinery details from one element to another (beam to beam, plate to plate, beam to plate.

Following the system and idea from task 1# I tried to design a stair box using formable surfaces and panelizing system.

To optimze the number of sticks which touch the ground and to avoid having a jungle of sticks I definedn a logic of using sticks which is in the picture on the net page.

This logis is based in intersection point where the sticks meet each other.

Experiencing some physical hand models based on tree structures and material efficiency which inspired us a lot to do the stair box and also Micro House task

Another solution to solve the connection details with same logic of simplifying the connection points. But this time with overlapping the joints in one direction and using cuts with specific angles. In this system the joint are going to be optimized in the way same as the last one with the difference that they are expanding in 2 directions at the first layer and the joints to the ground are meeting eachother in specific points
