Christmas came early for Wild Grain Bakery owners Buntha Meng and Ketaka Lao, who heard last week that they had won Best Christmas Mince Tarts in the Baking NZ nationwide competition. Judges praised their pastry skills, the balance of flavours, quality NZ ingredients and design of the tarts. The couple say the win is a great honour and thank the community for their feedback as they developed the winning recipe. “After people eat our Christmas mince tarts, they want another one. That is what we want to achieve,” Ketaka says. The Silverdale bakery has won multiple awards over the years and no doubt there will soon be queues for the best Christmas tarts in NZ.

November water bills shock residents Errors in reading around 400 water meters on Whangaparāoa Peninsula resulted in Watercare bills between three and five times higher than normal for some residents this month.

Paul Rodgers of Tindalls Bay took to social media when his bill jumped from around

$110 per month to $440 in November.

It proved to be a problem experienced by many others, mainly from Stanmore Bay to the Gulf Harbour end of the peninsula.

“I knew our water usage hadn’t changed, and Watercare found no leaks, so it was a real worry,” Rodgers says. “I thought

it might be just us, but the deluge of responses to the Facebook post showed it was widespread.”

Receiving such a large and unexpected bill as the cost of living rises and Christmas approaches caused a lot of anxiety.

Stanmore Bay and says her Watercare bills over the last five months averaged around $60 per month.

“So, receiving a bill for almost $400 this month was a shock,” she says.

“It is terrible timing – some of those earlier bills were actual readings, so I thought I was on track, and just before Christmas this happens. It will hit some people hard.”

Tracey Baty of Stanmore Bay budgets for around $120 per month for water for her family of five, which includes three teenagers, although she says it has been hard to budget with water costs seesawing up and down in recent months. In October she was charged $83; her November bill was $498.

“I nearly died,” she says. “With Watercare, we can’t take our business elsewhere, so someone needs to be accountable for this.”

Initially when Hibiscus Matters contacted Watercare, they were unaware of any particular issue – although several residents had contacted them about the size of their individual accounts, Watercare was unaware it was a wider problem.

Following Hibiscus Matters’ enquiries, Watercare’s investigations showed the cause to be the incorrect reading of around 400 Hibiscus Coast water meters, particularly in the Tindalls Bay area.

Watercare head of retail operations, Davy Suratsingh, says the meters were incorrectly read lower in July and September, with estimated readings in between.

Watercare’s estimated readings are based on the water usage between the last two billed actual readings, so if the most recent read was lower than it should have been, the estimate would also be low.

“This means that those customers received lower than normal bills over those months,” Suratsingh says.

He says after a change in meter reader staff for that circuit, customer’s November bills were based on accurate, actual readings and these much higher bills are essentially a catch up.

“We understand our customers’ frustration and worry with receiving a higher-thanexpected bill, particularly at this time of

year, and apologise for causing distress.”

He says Watercare will get in touch with the customers affected to explain the situation and outline the payment options available to them.

“If a customer is concerned about their ability to pay the bill, we encourage them to reach out to us. We can discuss flexible payment terms and other forms of financial support.”

“As a result of this issue, we are working with our meter reading service provider, ADR, to put in place further controls to identify consecutive meter misreads earlier.”

Baty and Rodgers say that Watercare’s communication fell short.

“It’s the way that they have gone about it – it’s a catch up bill for their error so it’s important how that message is delivered at this time of year. Receiving a huge and unexpected bill doesn’t help and is stressful,” Rodgers says.

Baty said she received no apology when she was offered a payment plan.

“All I can think about is families who are seeing all the costs go up, and this happening at one of the most expensive times of year.”

Boulevard opens

Work on the extension of Ōrewa Boulevard is due to be completed this week. The project extends the pedestrian friendly boulevard from Riverside Road to Empire Road. Work began in April and includes construction of a shared cycling and walking path on the beach side of Hibiscus Coast Highway and a new brick-paved footpath on the shop side; replacing the parallel parking on the beach side of Hibiscus Coast Highway with angled parking, creating an additional seven carparks; upgrading pedestrian crossings to raised zebra crossings catering for pedestrians and cyclists; relocating the school bus stop at 280 Hibiscus Coast Highway to 6 Riverside Road and moving Intercity buses to 288 Hibiscus Coast Highway. The project was funded by the Hibiscus and Bays Local Board.

Covid leader does Ōrewa stand-up The former Director General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield told an Ōrewa audience last week that he hoped any Royal Inquiry into NZ’s Covid-19 response would be forward looking, and not a Spanish Inquisition.

Dr Bloomfield was speaking at the Evelyn Page Retirement Village, the first of five talks he will deliver at Ryman villages across NZ before taking up a new appointment, based in NZ. He said the inquiry would be valuable if it taught NZ what it needed to have in place for the next pandemic. He hoped the inquiry would not get bogged down with questions like ‘why did you not do this?’ and ‘why didn’t this happen?’.

“We did the best we could with the information available at the time,” he said.

He added that according to a study done in 2019, the best prepared country to handle a pandemic was the United States and the second was the United Kingdom. NZ was ranked 35th.

“Ironically, they did the same survey last year and we have improved to 13th, but the US is still number one. What this shows is that you can plan and prepare all you like, but when push comes to shove, it comes down to the quality of leadership, good decision-making and good relationships, and the values that underpin your response. In this country, the government did the number one thing it was meant to do and that was to look after the people.”

Dr Bloomfield titled his talk Lesson on Life and Leadership in Covid-19, and he took his audience on a journey from his first live ‘stand-up’ in front of the nation on January 28, 2020, to his resignation, which took effect in July this year.

While he might have seemed calm and composed in front of the cameras that made him a household name, and unexpected celebrity, he equated the daily stand-ups to entering the colosseum.

“I couldn’t eat beforehand and by the time I’d finished, I was drenched in sweat.”

While he didn’t dwell on the stress, anxiety and exhaustion that leading the country through those early days of pandemic involved, he said what got him through were the simple messages of kindness that he received from New Zealanders. This included a handwritten letter that arrived from a 92-year-old from Invercargill in an envelope simply addressed to: Dr Bloomfield, Wellington, “I think”.

He spoke about the need to the rapid escalation in alert levels in early 2020s and the “amazing response” from people everywhere to the lockdowns. He put this down to the clear and honest communication, which was also effective in countering misinformation.

During question time, one member of the audience made claims about the safety of the booster, calling for an investigation. Dr Bloomfield said NZ had very good data on reactions to the vaccine, both minor and major, and all deaths related to Covid or where Covid might have been a contributing factor.

“This means we can compare what we might expect to see in a certain age group or ethnicity.”

Mike Lee gives his ‘not so maiden’ maiden speech

Newly-elected Councillor Mike Lee says councillors need to take a new approach in order to fix Auckland Council.

At the Governing Body meeting on November 1, all newly-elected councillors had the chance to give a maiden speech including Waitematā and Gulf ward Mike Lee who said he was not “a maiden in any form”.

Lee sat on the Auckland Regional Council more than 30 years ago and was elected to Auckland Council after the amalgamation.

He said he felt his return to Council was because the organisation was in a crisis.

He said the crisis was financial but also cultural in the way “Council is perceived by the people”.

“It is not one particular CCO or company or section of the super city that is failing.

It is failing across the board and … the failing starts at the top and only can be fixed at the top.”

Lee said there were some who misguidedly believed Council was doing well and any challenges were because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

He said Council needed to “own the

problem” before being able to fix it.

The meeting followed the announcement that nearly 1000 bus services were being suspended by Auckland Transport.

“The people of Auckland have been paying well over the odds in an endeavour to get a world-class public transport system but yesterday, we learned that rather than going ahead, we are going backwards.”

Lee also looked to issues of confidentiality and said Council needed to make sure there was good legal grounds for meetings to exclude the public.

Motorway undergoing quality testing

Motorists who thought they may be able to take the fast lane north from the Coast before Christmas will be disappointed.

Waka Kotahi (NZ Transport Agency) has scotched rumours that the opening of the new motorway between Puhoi and Warkworth is imminent.

Already a year behind schedule due to Covid, Waka Kotahi says there are still earthworks, surface drainage, planting, kerbing and road surfacing to be done.

Transport services general manager Brett Gliddon says extensive quality and safety tests must also be completed.

The Matakana link road is scheduled to open in tandem with the new motorway next year.

The motorway is being delivered through a Public Private Partnership (PPP).

The Northern Express Group (NX2) consortium is responsible for the financing, design, construction and then maintenance of the motorway for the 25 years that will follow the build.

Gliddon says under the terms of the PPP arrangements, the road opening can only be confirmed once an independent reviewer is satisfied that all contractually agreed safety and quality assurance requirements and tests have been met.

He says building a road that meets these tests is the responsibility of NX2 and its subcontractor, Fletcher/Acciona joint venture.

“Waka Kotahi, NX2 and Fletcher/Acciona are fully committed to working together to complete the project to the required safety and quality assurance standards as soon as possible and look forward to opening the motorway next year,” Gliddon says.

He said the prevalence of confidentiality happened at the local board level as well, with public excluded workshops.

The most common complaint he heard during his campaign was around consultation rather than rate increases.

“Council and the CCOs almost inevitably have their way and there is a surprising amount of resentment.”

Lee ended on an optimistic note with hope for reform under Mayor Wayne Brown’s leadership and the promise of a “brand new start”.

Social housing options

The impact of public concerns regarding Kainga Ora’s plan to build 37 homes in Millwater will be known this week. Kainga Ora has resource consent to build 37 twobedroom homes on a 3500sqm site that it owns in Bonair Crescent. The two-storey complex will also have a community room, 38 carparks and at least 28 cycle parks.

Once residents became aware of the plan, opposition grew, with concerns voiced about issues such as the density of what is proposed, the potential for disruptive behaviour and the impact on property values. They are keen for an alternative, such as Kiwibuild homes.

Following public consultation last August, Kainga Ora will present its recommendations for a way forward at a meeting with residents in Whangaparāoa MP Mark Mitchell’s Ōrewa office this week. Both Mitchell and a spokesperson for the residents group say they are hoping that Kainga Ora have listened to the community and will come back with a proposal that shows they have taken those views on board. One option is that the land could be put back on the market, or Kainga Ora could amend its proposed development, or stick with the current plan. Auckland Council contractors have been working on the little wharf on Ōrewa Estuary (near Estuary Arts carpark).

Council’s area operations manager, Kris Bird, says the timber wharf is being renewed to ensure it can maintain current service levels. The renewal work covers the stairs and landing as well as pile repair. The approximate cost of the work, including contingencies, is $300,000. It is scheduled to be completed at the end of this month.

Looking forward to work ahead I would like to warmly thank everyone who supported Team Coast in the recent local board elections, and I am humbled to have been supported as a young candidate running for the first time. It was a close call with initial voting results indicating that I was not successful, so there was surprise and relief that our hard work had paid off when the final vote was announced. I would like to especially thank the members of Team Coast and Janet Fitzgerald for their ongoing support and advice. Team Coast stood as a group of candidates dedicated to our community, with strong values including integrity and equity, and a willingness to listen and engage. Regardless of the outcome, we will continue to support our community, with Lia Shelford-Toopi serving as a Red Beach school board member, and Kereama and Trish Nathan continuing their leadership of our inclusive community marae in Silverdale.

It is an exciting time for the Hibiscus and Bays Local Board with several big projects underway which need continued support and advocacy by our board members and residents. Penlink O Mahurangi has recently received another plan change that wisely increases traffic capacity with the intention of easing congestion along Whangaparāoa Road. With public transport not planned until three years after opening, we will continue to be strongly advocating for a bus station on the Whangaparāoa end of Penlink

Ōrewa is also benefiting from several projects, with the Ōrewa Beach esplanade extension expected to be finished by November 30, and the Local Board funding a much-needed upgrade to the Ōrewa Library roof. The Ōrewa Beach sea wall project which is set to begin work in 2023/2024 aims to provide erosion protection and coastal resilience along a small part of Ōrewa Beach (specifically from Marine View Drive to Kinloch Reserve area) and it is imperative that we identify and protect further areas of risk relating to coastal erosion and flooding in times of a changing climate.

I am also humbled to have been selected as the Destination Ōrewa Beach local board representative and continue Janet Fitzgerald’s work supporting our local businesses in Ōrewa and beyond. Be sure not to miss exciting local events such as Surf Sounds and the Longest Dinner, I will see you there!

I would like to express my sincere thanks and gratitude to all assisted when my 89 year old father fell over outside Labtests in Stanmore Bay on November 1, and broke his hip. From the physiotherapist lady who called the ambulance, to the nurse from the Medical Centre who attended a nasty cut on my father’s arm, to a lovely lady who stayed with us the entire time making jokes with her arm around my Dad, to the wonderful compassionate ambulance officer Lachlan, to Vicki from Driving Miss Daisy, to a wonderful young lady who all I know is that nickname was ‘Lou’.

Sorry if I have forgotten anyone else who helped on the day. I am so grateful that my Dad lives in such a wonderful community and so grateful to all who assisted that day, and am happy to report that my Dad is at home recovering well.

Coastie quirks?

I like the Ed Amon pieces. It’s always interesting to hear what new New Zealanders or visitors find funny, strange or weird about us? I remember a Croatian visitor finding it strange us mowing the lawns. I spent some time on Google street maps looking around eastern Europe, including Russia. Everyone seems to have a large vegie garden and wildflowers instead of lawn. Maybe our fixation and terror of potholes, and having multiple ensuites, bathrooms and toilets could be laughed at? I’m sure Ed could enlighten us.

Footpaths first

As a resident on the north of Centreway Road I have just been invited by Auckland Transport to comment on the plans to install a raised zebra crossing outside Ōrewa Beach Primary School.

It’s a great idea, if somewhat low priority, in my opinion. I have told Auckland Transport that new street lights are unnecessary. Almost no one will be using the crossing at times when lights are needed.

The modern pedestrian will cross the road 50 metres away from a pedestrian crossing if it’s not exactly where they want it. As a road with almost no traffic on it outside of work hours, people will cross where they want. The lighting money would be better spent fixing the footpaths from Florence Ave to Victor Eaves Park that have been broken beyond safe use for over three years – and I am sure there will be wry commentary from many on paths near them that could be fixed. Let’s fix Auckland, one project at a time – did you see what I did there?

Steps need work

These were our steps to Ōrewa Beach from Arundel Reserve recently. When will the Council work on these to make them safe for residents and visitors? I am particularly concerned about elderly people using this access point.

We are currently working with contractors to fix the damage to the beach and accessways at Arundel Reserve as well as Ōrewa Recreation Reserve and Kinloch Reserve.

Timing of the works is dependent on contractor availability, weather, and suitable tides. We’d like to thank the community for their patience and assure you that we are working to have these resolved as soon as possible.”

Last week, Silverdale Fire Brigade passed a significant milestone – it was its 70th anniversary on November 22. The service grew from humble beginnings in the workshop of mechanic Keith McDonald. Many of the first firefighting volunteers were mechanics by trade who downed tools to respond when they got a call from the local telephone exchange. McDonald went on to became Silverdale’s first chief fire officer. The catalyst for the start of a local fire service (the nearest fire station to the north was Warkworth and, to the south, Browns Bay) was a large fire in a pine plantation at the northern end of Hatfields Beach.

The scale of the fire forced locals to acknowledge the need for an organised response and in 1952, following a public meeting, a group of volunteers took on the responsibility of answering fire calls. The Silverdale station currently has a mix of paid staff and volunteers. It has been decided that the brigade will wait until February to mark the big anniversary officially. ‘Miracle’ drug gives Josh new lease of life Stanmore Bay personal trainer Josh Chase is continuing his campaign to raise funds for and build awareness of a drug that can dramatically improve the lives of cystic fibrosis (CF) sufferers.

Chase was born with CF, which is a progressive, genetic condition that clogs the lungs and digestive system with thick mucus, causing chronic symptoms including breathlessness, coughing, chest infections and stomach pain.

Although there is no cure for CF at present, the drug Trikafta can clear much of the mucus and dramatically improve sufferers’ lives – something that Chase himself is experiencing, having recently started on a two-year trial.

“I noticed changes in myself within the first few hours of taking it,” he said. “Calling it a miracle drug is an understatement.

“I took my first tablet in the morning and by 12, I didn’t need an inhaler, I stopped coughing and was able to take a deep breath, and I haven’t coughed since I started. I’m also sleeping better.”

Taking Trikafta also means Chase has been able to get a full-time job for the first time in five years, becoming the manager of Jetts Gym in Browns Bay. “I can lift heavier weights than I ever have, it’s amazing,” he said. “I’m not gasping for air, and not having to take time off work.”

However, other people with CF are still unlikely to be able to enjoy such benefits, as Pharmac recently decided against funding Trikafta, which costs $330,000 per person, per year.

This was a huge blow, according to CF support organisation Cystic Fibrosis NZ (CFNZ).

Chief executive Lisa Burns said after months of apparent progress, she was “utterly thrown” when the decision was announced in late September.

“It defies logic that a medicine with such positive impact doesn’t make it up the ranking list for funding. The current average (CF) lifeexpectancy in New Zealand is 31, yet Trikafta could give Kiwis with CF an additional 27 years, and quality of life. It doesn’t make any sense.”

Chase remains hopeful that by the time his twoyear trial on the drug comes to an end, Pharmac will realise how much of an impact the drug has on people’s lives and change its mind.

In a bid to raise funds for all CFNZ’s efforts, Chase is currently running a raffle at Jetts, with prizes that include sports gear, NZ Muscle supplements and vouchers for groceries, coffee and a tattoo. Tickets remain on sale until November 30.

Challenge changes lives

There were some big winners in Northern Arena and Nourish App’s Cut 4 Cash challenge – and not only for those who won big cheques! The 8-week challenge combined healthy eating and exercise, supported by trainers, and was designed to kick old habits to the curb and make a positive difference in people’s lives. A total of 269 people took part Northern Arena spokesperson Justin Byrne says collectively, a total of 918.7kg of weight was lost – equating to 804.6kg of fat that disappeared, and 88.5kg of muscle gained. “The participants were pushed to the max mentally and physically but gained much more than just stats and prize money,” he says. “Congratulations to the winners in every sense of the word.” Sharing a prize pool of $19,000 were: Harley Patterson-King - $10,000, Zeynep Tonato $2500, Lyall Bailey $1500, Hayley McCollum and Jared Pouwhare $1000 each and staff Deb Handford, $3000.

On the buses at Milldale A new bus service for Milldale was launched on November 20.

T

he move from early childhood education to mainstream schooling is being made just a little easier for young Kiwis thanks to something called a Transition to School Programme.

Big fans of this bespoke programme are John and Alina Cook, owners of Happy Hearts, a new early childhood education centre in Red Beach. They say their transition programme is much more than teaching children how to sit on the mat and count numbers.

“It was custom-built for Happy Hearts by a primary school teacher who was concerned at the lack of preparation evident in children starting school,” John says. “The students who were ready for the school day, classroom structure and task expectations progressed much faster and more happily than others.”

The couple say the programme has been part of their Riverhead centre since inception, and will be an important factor at the newly opened Red Beach centre.

“It’s a comprehensive programme. Learning Through Play flows from room-to-room, culminating in this pre-school structure which teaches numeracy, literacy, art, music

and te reo, as well as exploring individual and group work, communication and confidence.

“Simple reading books, fun worksheets, numeracy games and advanced groups are all part of the intentional curriculum, and blend nicely with general childdevelopment themes.”

However, they stress that all learning at their centres is underpinned by a philosophy of fun. Alina says it is very much about learning through play.

Happy Hearts can cater for up to 120 children, aged from naught to six years.

There are five staff on site at present, and this is expected to grow to 20 when the open plan centre is fully operational.

“We’re family owned and family orientated, and our teacher:child ratio is at least 20 percent better that the Ministry of Education standards, which means each child gets the care and attention they need.”

John and Alina have welcomed the Government’s recent changes to childcare eligibility criteria, which they say will help more families access quality early learning for their children.

The 989 bus service will connect Milldale with the Hibiscus Coast Station. It will run seven days a week, every 30 minutes from 6am until 7.30pm.

The service will be run by Bayes Coachlines who are confident they have enough drivers in their local team to run the service to the timetable.

Rodney Local Board’s deputy chair Louise Johnston has welcomed the news.

“Milldale is growing fast and for residents, of all ages, being able to catch a bus directly to the Hibiscus Coast Station at Silverdale will be brilliant,” she says.

Auckland Transport’s principal service network planner Dave Hilson says the current nationwide driver shortage isn’t being felt across every bus operator in the same way.

“Bayes has enough drivers for this new service and this service will enable residents’ easy access to Hibiscus Coast bus station.

From here, a range of connections are possible including the Silverdale shopping centre, Ōrewa, Whangaparāoa, North Shore and the City Centre.

“AT will look to expand the bus services in the area as it grows.”

Customers will need an AT HOP card to pay their fare – the nearest AT HOP retailer is Silverdale Pak ‘n Save.

Hospice op shop on the hop The Ōrewa Hospice Shop will move to a new location this week.

It may be just shifting just down the road, from the current location at 41 Florence Ave to 57 Florence Ave, but hospice says the move will make a big difference.

Shop manager, Michelle Mason, says the new space is beautiful – lighter, brighter and fresher.

“But it will still have the same vibe and essence – the strong community feel where ‘everybody knows your name’, she says.

“A lot of our customers are regulars, some come in as often as every day – not just to have a good fossick around but also to chat with and connect with our volunteers. It’s really important to us that people still feel that sense of connection.”

She says hospice shops are not only popular because people want the money they spend to go to a good cause, but because the shop sells items that many other charity

“When Ike’s Emporium closed down it was quite a loss for the community so the team have worked hard to fill some of that gap.”

“I just finished cutting a hedge in Ōrewa when the neighbour came over and asked if I could pressure clean their drive,” Simon says. “I take pride in a job well done and hope to earn a few dollars in the process.”

Mowing lawns is a far cry from the busy corporate world Simon is used to. A scaffolder by trade, he moved into project management on major commercial construction projects 14 years ago.

“But in the end, I got sick of the corporate world, the pressure and the commute to Auckland,” he says. “I like being outside,

We will start this work at the Northern Connection where the project team will carry out median island and northbound widening works to SH1. To carry out this work safely we must close SH1 southbound and northbound from Kaipara Flats Road to Hudson Road, from 9pm to 5am. A detour will be in place via Kaipara Flats Road and Woodcocks Road.

Biodiversity and cultural funding offer A fund for community-led efforts to protect threatened species and at-risk cultural heritage has opened for applications.

The Department of Conservation’s Community Fund will make $9.2 million available for community conservation groups nationwide in the next year, supporting critical, grassroots work to halt the biodiversity crisis.

Acting Minister of Conservation Meka Whaitiri says the fund has been aligned with achieving the outcomes of the Biodiversity Strategy/Te Mana o Te Taiao.

“New Zealand’s biodiversity is a rich tapestry of animal and plant life, from wonderful snails and rare lichens to endangered birds and lizards, and the unique and special ecosystems they are a part of,” she said. “Many of these species are on the brink of extinction and the places they live in are highly degraded.

“This fund recognises that community groups play a vital role in protecting wildlife and places. We need these groups if we’re to turn around the biodiversity crisis.”

This year’s fund is divided into two streams:

Long grass a small price for rare nest Ron and Cynthia Archer have a fine view from their Manly beachfront home and are spending even more time looking out their window since a pair of rare NZ dotterels, tuturiwhatu, made a nest on the front lawn.

They, and neighbour Gaynor Larsen, take pride in maintaining their properties, but their lawns will have to go unmowed for several more weeks, so as not to frighten the birds. Ron has also postponed a contract for repainting the outside of the house for the same reason.

Ron and Cynthia have lived on Manly beach since 1974 and this is the first year they have had a chance to become acquainted with these little birds.

“I have realised how much I like birds,” Cynthia says.

The couple feel protective of the nesting pair and worry about them out in the recent stormy weather. Ron had

stern words with a dog owner whose dog was off lead and ran near the dotterels.

The nest is actually on Gaynor’s lawn, and she got in on the action early, having seen the birds mating from her upstairs window.

She says perhaps she can thank using the wrong weedkiller for the birds choosing her lawn for their nest.

She sprayed for Onehunga weed but used a chemical that also killed some of the grass. The dotterels have chosen the brown, dead bit of the lawn for their nest – they are perfectly camouflaged there, and maybe it looks like sand, where they also like to nest.

Forest and Bird have fenced off the nest site and the active and alert birds are busily sharing the jobs of sitting on three eggs and protecting the nest from any possible dangers.

• $7.2 million for biodiversity projects that reduce the extinction risk of priority threatened species or protect priority ecosystems; • $2 million to protect cultural heritage sites and maintain visitor infrastructure in the backcountry.

“This funding will also enable heritage sites to be preserved for future generations and to tell the public about important stories on our conservation estate,” Whaitiri says.

There was no DOC Community Fund round in 2021 due to the focus on the Department’s Jobs for Nature programme and COVID recovery, so $9.2 million is available this year as a double funding round.

Community groups, iwi and hapū, as well as private landowners throughout the country can apply for the funding.

Applications close on January 31 and successful applications will be announced from late April.

Food waste message given A group of Ōrewa College students were given a lesson in the importance of reducing food waste at home recently.

The project was funded through Auckland Council’s Love Food Hate Waste programme, assisted by Kate Hall (aka Ethically Kate).

A total of 35 students participated and were challenged to come up with an innovative, easy and cost-effective idea on how to save food waste.

Project coordinator Lena Kovac says nine students submitted entries, with an impressive raft of ideas ranging from creatively using up veggie peels to worm farms and compost bins to reducing the

amount of food produced at the school’s Tuck Shop.

The winning entry was submitted by Year 9 student Maria Walker-Kinnell, who made a video of herself foraging and encouraging others to do the same while exploring nature.

“We loved how creative and engaged the students became and hope they have all taken something away from this project,” Kovac says.

Fixed water supplies to counter dry

Auckland Council has established 21 permanent community water sites around rural Auckland to help mitigate summer water shortages and assist with future drought management.

The nearest locations include the Sinclair Park Kaukapakapa and the Stillwater Community Hall.

A further 10 sites will be added when the project is complete.

Project manager Uys de Wet says that as the summer rolls around, it’s a timely reminder for rural residents to think about their water supplies.

Environmental emphasis – all proceeds go to conservation.

Forest festival returns

After a long, Covid-induced gap of three years, the Okura Forest Festival is back in February and specially priced Earlybird tickets are now on sale until the end of the year.

Tagged as Auckland’s largest environmental awareness festival, the Friends of Okura Bush fundraiser features a wide range of bands, singers and DJs, as well as environmental workshops, art, craft and information stalls, and lots of activities for kids. Diverse food and drink options are also available, with the emphasis on healthy, vegan and, where possible, organic local produce.

This year’s music line-up includes Strangely Arousing, Sam Bartells, Big Tasty, The Rvmes, Ungus Ungus Ungus, Mema Wilda,

Odds & Ends, Marmalade, Caught Inside, Freya and The Human Kind.

The event is organised by the Friends of Okura Bush and run completely by volunteers, with all proceeds going directly towards protecting Okura Bush Scenic Reserve, which is one of the last stands of remnant coastal forest and New Zealand’s largest estuary marine reserve.

The 2023 festival runs from 11am to 11pm on Saturday, February 18 at Okura Park, next to the community centre, in Okura River Road.

New date for Asian Festival

The Asian Food & Culture Festival, which was to be held on Saturday, November 19, was postponed by predicted bad weather. It will now go ahead on Saturday, December 3, 3pm-8pm at the same venue – Moana Reserve in Ōrewa town centre. Giving kororā a helping hand Little penguin/kororā is probably one of the most widespread breeding seabirds in the Hauraki Gulf. They are present on most of the islands, especially those that are free of mammalian predators. Sadly, they are mostly absent from unprotected areas on the mainland where they are particularly vulnerable to attacks by uncontrolled dogs.

They do nest in Shakespear Regional Park where birds are regularly recorded on trail cameras positioned to detect incoming pests.

Despite being common, there is still much to be learned about kororā. We don’t know how many there are, although they are believed to be declining. A status report from 1984 suggested there might be 5000 to 10,000 pairs in New Zealand. There are two sub-species, one in Australia and Otago, and one in New Zealand (including Otago).

Kororā are the smallest penguin, weighing about a kilogram. Their feathers are metallicblue above and white underneath. During the breeding season, kororā mostly feed within about 20km of their nest site. They are efficient divers and feed on squid, small fish and crustaceans. They are nocturnal on land, coming ashore to breed and, later, to moult their feathers. Their loud braying calls can often be heard just offshore near dusk. Kororā will nest in shallow burrows dug by themselves or other seabirds or in caves, rock crevices or man-made structures including under buildings. They usually lay two eggs around August or September and the chicks leave the nest about 95 days later.

The New Zealand Penguin Initiative is an organisation which is working to encourage and coordinate monitoring of penguins throughout the country. They provide training and equipment to community groups working to protect and monitor kororā. Work has begun on nearby Tiritiri Matangi and Motuora, and will soon start on the Noises, Waiheke and at Leigh. Already there are some interesting findings. It appears that our penguins may be a little smaller than those further south and, although rarely recorded elsewhere, it seems our birds can have a second nesting attempt after a successful first one.

Kororā are the smallest penguin, weighing about a kilogram.

Since they cannot travel far from their nesting site, the fortunes of kororā can give us information about local conditions in the Gulf. If the adults are a healthy weight and can raise their chicks to fledge, then there must be adequate local food supplies. In some years this is not the case, and few chicks survive. They may also be at long-term risk from climate-change induced changes in the location and numbers of their prey items.

Just as for New Zealand dotterel, kororā respond well to assistance from us. They will readily occupy and breed in nest boxes at protected sites. Hopefully, those nesting in the park will continue to enjoy their protect space.

Impassioned plea for pony plots Pony clubs across Rodney made a plea for their grounds to be protected from development during a hearing on the draft Rodney Local Parks Management Plan, which was held in Ōrewa earlier this month.

Several club representatives including Warkworth, Matakana and Silverdale spoke at the hearing asking the Rodney Local Board for long-term leases so they can apply for grants and invest in club facilities. There was also concern that sharing parks could lead to conflict.

The Matakana Pony Club gave the example of a pump track being proposed around the perimeter of the reserve, on Matakana Valley Road.

Club representative Lydia Harris said the two uses may be incompatible.

“Pony clubs are such an important part of the community, but as the area grows, these spaces will become increasingly

comprised.,” she said. “Horses need space.”

In a written submission, Wendy Simpson said pony clubs were being pushed out, farms were being subdivided and roads were now often too dangerous to ride on.

“Private facilities are expensive to hire to the point of becoming prohibitive,” her submission said. “Most of the few equestrian facilities and spaces left are out west or south, an hour float trip away for many [in Mahurangi], so a simple ride involved considerable time and cost.

“The Warkworth Rodeo and Pony Club provides a safe and accessible place for horse riders of all ages in our local eastern area.

Don’t take away this precious equestrian facility to become yet another soccer field or carpark. Please continue to allow local Rodney and greater Auckland equestrians, and future generations of riders, a place to ride.”

Real wealth starts in the backyard New research is simply telling us what many of our grandmothers and great grandmothers have always known – even without having heard the word nutrition, that there is a connection between growing and eating good food and healthy living.

Hopefully, your vegetables survived the weather bomb we experienced on November 11 with the horizontal rain and wind gusts of over 100kph.

Luckily, I had my exposed vegetable beds well mulched with compost, seagrass, chicken manure and piles of grass clippings, so the huge amount of rain we had should have soaked down into the soil very well. All this organic fertiliser is vital for providing the micro-nutrients needed in the soil necessary for human health. As my garden is no-dig, the organic matter will improve the soil structure while feeding the soil microbes that need a slow and steady diet of essential minerals, while also providing a moist growing medium.

If your water tanks are full and your garden soil well soaked, now is the time to get those summer crops established. Build some structures for the beans and cucumbers to climb. Stake the tomatoes and plant the corn. Try some of the new corn varieties available like the Blue Hopi corn that I have planted.

Zucchini, watermelons, peppers, chilli and eggplants can be planted now and will benefit from the moist soil as well as the summer heat. And, if you have room, also

plant some kumara slips. Turmeric and ginger will provide you with an interesting crop, when buying the roots for use in the kitchen, look for some that are sprouting and plant them in a warm sheltered spot.

Need a new plant to catch the children’s imagination? Try peanuts, sunflowers, spaghetti squash, or get some of the Lady Godiva pumpkin seeds and grow your own pepitas.

Nature has been keeping a balance between insects and plants over thousands of years without the use of synthetic chemicals and remember, pesticides were developed as an off shoot of the chemical weapons developed in war. They are now found in water, air, the ground and our food, not only killing insects but also toxic to our environment as well. So, plant up a beneficial insect garden, plenty of cleome, flowering herbs like thyme, sage, lavender, and let some of your winter vegetables go to seed like turnips, rocket, and parsnips. Not only will they attract the beneficial insects that eat many of the pests, but also the seed eating birds will follow, and they also eat some of those pests which provide their high protein diet.

Santa arriving by Coastguard vessel is always a highlight of Christmas at the Canal.

Canal celebrates Christmas Santa will arrive in Gulf Harbour in style, on board a Coastguard boat, as part of Christmas at the Canal on Saturday, December 3.

The event is organised by the Vine Community Church to bring the community together in the waterside setting of Gulf Harbour village.

It will feature live music, including carols played by members of the Kumeu Brass Band, as well as choirs from local schools.

There will be art and craft stalls under the trees, and Gulf Harbour preschool will have an art gallery of works set up.

Giant bubbles, bouncy castles and free kids’ crafts are all part of the fun, and Clover Nails will paint children’s nails free of charge.

Children aged five years and over can learn

to skateboard – ramps will be set up and Young Guns Skates instructors will be on hand to teach.

For those who cycle to the event, Gear Heads Workshop will provide free safety checks on bicycles.

A wide range of food and refreshments are on offer, including a sausage sizzle.

Vine Community Church has also set up a free food pantry – anyone is welcome to bring non-perishable items to donate to the pantry, or to help themselves to items.

Organiser, Vine Community Church pastor Sian Bonner, says it will be a fun, affordable day out for the whole family.

Christmas at the Canal is on Saturday, December 3, from 10am to 1pm at Gulf Harbour Village (around the rotunda).

A Christmas event has outgrown Danielle Watson’s Stanmore Bay home and will be held at Coast Plaza in Whangaparāoa on December 10.

Danielle says her family started an event a couple of years ago in their two bedroom home.

“We had our little girl Fraya (now aged 2) and desperately wanted to find something fun and affordable to do with her at Christmas,” Danielle says.

They did colouring activities, cookie decorating and story book reading as well as a movie for the little ones.

“It was a little hard to pull together but still fun,” she says.

This year it has opened up more, with a public venue, to become Coastie Kids Christmas, but is still based on the same idea of free family fun.

“Thanks to the support of management at Coast Plaza, we have been able to really open up the event to everyone and take it to the next level – plus, being in a mall, parents can go and have a nosey around during the event.”

This year for the first time, it has added a market event to bring the community together. The Local Christmas Market will be held on Saturday, December 17 in the bottom carpark of Whangaparāoa Baptist Church (733 Whangaparāoa Road), from 10am-2pm.n A total of 20 stalls will feature crafts, clothing, and more. along with face painting for the children. Hestia hopes for happier Christmas season Please don’t forget mums and teenage boys – that’s the request from Hestia Rodney Women’s Refuge this year, as its annual Christmas gift appeal gets underway.

Centrestage youth in limelight Centrestage Youth Theatre has won an Excellence In Drama award at the national Junior Theatre Festival held in Auckland recently.

Youth theatre companies from all around Aotearoa presented a portion of a Broadway show to be adjudicated by an international panel of industry professionals from New York and Europe.

Centrestage Youth presented a shortened version of Mary Poppins Jr, which had played to full houses during last month’s school holidays.

The show was directed by Anna Mortlock, along with Annelie Maddock, who directed the singing.

Reflecting on the win, Mortlock said the Coast had a huge pool of youth talent.

“It’s a real privilege to be able to work with these young people and see them develop their skills and confidence on stage,” she said.

There were also individual awards given out on the night by Rebekkah SchoonbeekBerridge and Stuart Hendricks, from

Musical Theatre International Australian, for Outstanding Performers.

Centrestage Youth Theatre again punched above its weight to receive two of these awards.

Outstanding Male Performer went to Asher Whitehead, who played Michael Banks, and Outstanding Female Performer went to Tova Maddock, as Mary Poppins.

Whitehead said the junior theatre festival was “an amazing experience”.

“It gave us all an incredible opportunity to learn from the best directors and make new friends from around the country,” he said.

The Junior Youth Theatre Festival is an annual event, produced by Emma Bishop (StageAntics) and Mark Bradley.

The next junior show will be Madagascar Jr next July, with auditions early next year.

The senior show will be Be More Chill, which runs from April 29 to May 7. Again, auditions will be held early in the new year.

Having raised a whopping $21,000 for hospice, Brian Oakes says it is time to hang up the lights and say goodbye to Santa.

was important to them and others took a more artistic approach.

As part of a team building exercise, staff at the Red Beach centre were given a small canvas and invited to create their own masterpiece, using one of three colour palettes – yellow, green or blue.

Each canvas was then grouped together by colour and turned into a larger artwork to be hung on the walls of the reception area.

“This was a great way for the different teams working in the community health centre to connect with each other,” team manager for Rodney adult community mental health, Paula Abbey says.

“Plus, it generated lots of laughter and tea room conversations.”

Staff could do anything they wanted – paint, draw, collage or even cross stitch.

One team member said their initial thought was sheer terror.

“Art was the only subject I failed at school!” they said.

“But it was fun and got us all talking about it. The clients coming to see us also love them.”

The new reception art has been a talking point for patients who have shared their appreciation.

“Our art helps patients see us an individuals. It makes our interactions more personal and builds connections which is so important for both patients and staff,” another staff member said.

Abbey previously organised the redecoration of health centres in Tauranga and Whakatane by staff, and has plans to do the same in Warkworth and Helensville.

After 16 years of lighting up the lives of so many in Warkworth each Christmas, Brian Oakes is moving to Silverdale.

A regular and much-anticipated feature of the festive season, his dazzling light display at his Ashmore Crescent home will be sorely missed by locals.

Last year culminated in more than 30,000 lights illuminating his house every day for three weeks, with the introduction of a laser light display, as well as music and atmospheric smoke.

“It’s sad, but it was getting to the point that it was becoming a chore,” Brian says. “It took a month to set it all up and meant I had to be out there every evening, even on Christmas Day. “Then it was two weeks to take it all down.

I kept saying each year was my last, but I enjoyed doing it.

It was just hard thinking of new things each year.”

Inspired by how big America does Christmas, Brian sourced much of the equipment from there, and then with his training as an electronic technician he was able to create the spectacular display that raised a whopping $21,000 for the hospice over the last 10 years.

As a teacher and chairman at Senior Net, Brian will still be around Warkworth, but his lights will not.

Some of the lights have been sold, while the remainder will move with him to Silverdale where he will no doubt light up many more Christmases to come.

Rocky Road is one of my favourite sweet treats, and is perfect for Christmas with the addition of favourites like glacé cherries and some Christmas sprinkles. These beauties won’t just taste great – they will look festive too, and can be made a week or so ahead of time to avoid that Christmas rush.

Yields: 24 squares 80g shortbread biscuits 200g mini white marshmallows plus extra for the top 80g M&Ms (red and green) plus extra for the top 80g macadamia nuts (chopped) 30g glacé cherries (red) 30g glacé cherries(green) 150g unsalted butter 600g white chocolate of your choice 1 Tbsp glucose syrup ¼ tsp peppermint essence ½ tsp vanilla essence ¼ cup Christmas sprinkles (available from supermarkets and specialty cake shops)

Method: Grease and line a square brownie tin with baking paper. Place biscuits in a plastic bag and bash with a rolling pin until fine and crumbly. Chop the nuts and cherries. Combine biscuit crumbs, nuts, cherries, marshmallows, and M&Ms in a medium bowl. Set aside. In a large saucepan melt the butter, chocolate, and glucose over medium heat. Stirring constantly until there are no more lumps of chocolate visible, add the peppermint essence and vanilla. Let the mixture simmer for about 1 minute. Remove from the heat. Cool slightly. Stir the crumb mixture into the melted chocolate. Make sure it’s well combined. Tip the mixture into the lined baking tin and spread it out, smoothing the top and spreading into all the corners. Top with extra marshmallows, M&Ms, and Christmas sprinkle. Chill for at least 2 hours or until the chocolate mixture has hardened. Cut into squares.

Greek event excels for Hospice Harbour Hospice is $28,850 better off following the success of the Greek Extravaganza held in Ōrewa on October 29.

Organiser Theo Simeonidis said the sell-out evening celebrating everything Greek was another great success.

It featured traditional cuisine and wines from the sunny island of Crete and celebrated the special relationship existing between New Zealand and Crete, which was forged during World War II. Live entertainment included floorshows performed by dancers in traditional Cretan costumes and live music by Sounds of Greece & Friends.

“Hibiscus and Bays Local Board chair Gary Brown did a great job of auctioning of some high-value items, including

a signed All Blacks jersey,” Simeonidis said.

“The evening culminated in a sing-along of the entire gathering of the ABBA song I Have a Dream, an absolutely beautiful moment to seal a perfect evening.

“Already, plans are well advanced for Greek Extravaganza 2023 and we are looking forward to raising in excess of $30,000 next year.”

The event was cancelled last year due to Covid, but in the five years since it was launched under the auspices of the Rotary Club of Ōrewa-Millwater, just over $110,000 has been raised for hospice.

Simeonidis thanked local businesses for their valued sponsorship.

The annual Greek Extravaganza was another sellout event this year. The entertainment included an exhibition of traditional Crete dancing.

Collectable Christmas baubles fund hospice Farmers has released a special limited-edition Christmas bauble to raise funds for hospice.

The Farmers Christmas Campaign runs until December 24 and the baubles sell for $10 each, with Harbour Hospice receiving 100 percent of the purchase price.

This year’s bauble is inspired by Matariki and features a shooting star to symbolise loved ones who have died. It is also filled with tiny stars to represent comfort from those who are no longer with us.

Customers are also able to give a donation to Harbour Hospice and leave a message for someone they are thinking of on its Tree of Remembrance instore.

Over the last eight years that the campaign has been running, it has raised just under $6 million for hospice services across the country. The funds are used to provide vital funding to deliver services and care free of charge.

Locally, Harbour Hospice cares for one in three people who die on the Coast and, in the last year, provided specialist care and support to 1239 patients and their families.

Kenina Court, whose mother Clara Gillanders was cared for by Harbour Hospice in her final months of life, knows first-hand the impact Harbour Hospice makes in the community.

“I had some understanding of hospice before Mum became ill but I had no understanding of the care and attention and the time they give to families,” she says. “The hospice nurses and doctors are incredible people.”

Waitematā District Health Board funds about half of Harbour Hospice’s operating costs, but the charity is heavily reliant on the generosity of donors within the community to help ensure that vital palliative care and support remains free to those who need it.

Youth workers help to provide school based mentoring for youth who are facing challenges and just need an extra person in their corner. Brothers perform double act Brothers Kris and Mitchell Hollings, of Arkles Bay, have both returned from the National Judo Championships in Christchurch with gold medals.

Fourteen-year-old Kris won gold in the senior boys (under 50kgs) event, as well as picking up the silver medal in the cadet boys (under 50kgs) competition. Brother Mitchell, aged nine, won gold in the junior boys (under 28kgs).

Big $$$ offered to sports clubs

Kris, who attends Westlake Boys, now has his sights set firmly on qualifying for the NZ team, which will compete in Australia next year.

He will attend a national judo camp in Nelson in January as part of the selection process. His preparation includes classes twice a week, as well as a two-and-a-half hour training session every Sunday.

“Both boys work really hard and we are very proud of them,” Mum Racheal Hollings says.

“Kris plays team sports like cricket and rugby, but he likes the individual nature of judo. Neither Kris nor Mitchell is the biggest of boys, but judo has given them a lot of confidence to compete in sports outside of judo.”

Racheal said it was good to attend the Christchurch event, the first to be held since Covid.

Sport and recreation groups on the Coast are being encouraged to apply for funding under a new contestable fund from Auckland Council.

Council is putting aside $150 million over 10 years for its Sport and Recreation Facilities Investment Fund (SRFIF).

For next year’s funding round which is open now for applications, $13.4 million will be available for planning and development of sport and recreation facilities.

Active Communities acting general manager Dave Stewart says the fund looks to address sport and recreation infrastructure shortfalls and respond to changing preferences by Aucklanders.

“Its focus is on creating the best outcomes for the community while ensuring value for investment is achieved, while getting Aucklanders, especially tamariki, more active,” Stewart says.

The SRFIF is open to non-council organisations for significant facility development.

It has a focus on communities that are in the greatest need of investment and large-scale community sport facility development projects that can leverage additional investment.

Applications for Stage 1 close on January 31, with Stage 2 applications to be invited on March 10 next year.

There has, however, been a rise and then balancing out (rather than fall) in how imaging is used.

As time went on there was the invention of ultrasound imaging, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computerised tomography imaging (CT scans), arthrograms and more recently even functional (live) MRI scans. Many of these advanced imaging techniques were able to detect the smallest abnormality or oddity in the human body. In turn, diagnostics became more reliant on this technology, as well as blood tests and more, to the point where it was often assumed that whatever was seen on a scan must be the cause of the problem. Ōrewa diver takes international plunge

Water Safety NZ is calling on everyone, but particularly men, to step up this summer and take safety around water seriously. Last year, of the 90 people who drowned, 76 were male. Already this year, 70 families have lost one of their own in a drowning incident. Water Safety chief executive Daniel Gerrard says around 30 Kiwis, mostly male, will drown over the next two months. “Some might make it to celebrate the festive season with their family, but most won’t get to see the New Year,” he says. “No one is planning to become ‘That Guy’, but it’s now or never to make a real effort about being safe in, on and around water as we enjoy our beaches, lake and rivers. While these spots become summer playgrounds and pantries, let’s make sure that don’t also become our graves.” Gerrard says pakeha males in power boats, Maori men gathering kai underwater, Asian men fishing from rocks and Pasifika men fishing from boats are consistently overrepresented in drowning tragedies. He says it is blatantly obvious that Kiwis are underestimating their risks while around water. “By knowing the conditions, supervising the kids, wearing a lifejacket and remembering that you’re not as good as you were when you were 20, you will make it home at the end of the day.”

Risk takers beware

Last year, Māori, Asian and NZ European drowning deaths of males aged 55+ were the highest numbers on record. The current 55+ males cohort is one that appears to be risk takers (shown through drowning fatality numbers) throughout their adult lives. The proportion of incidents over time for males over 55 has also increased, possibly indicating that the boomers remain more active in their older years than earlier generations.

Older males fatalities and incidents occur largely when boating. It is more likely to be powered boating than sail, oar or paddlecraft. The people involved are more likely to be NZ European and live in the upper North Island. In the majority of boating fatalities, the boat sank or capsized, or the person fell overboard and could not get back on board. Many incidents were also the person involuntarily entering the water but also included injuries on board the boat It is not particularly an alcohol problem, it is a lifejacket problem. Seventyseven per cent of 55+ boating fatalities were not wearing a lifejacket correctly. Source, Water Safety NZ

Ōrewa teenager Olivia Fox will represent New Zealand at the prestigious Camo Invitational event in Montreal in Canada next month. The Camo invitational is a diving competition for the best junior and senior divers from around the world. Olivia, 14, and team mate Riley Oxenham are among the youngest in the NZ team. Olivia’s mother Maegan says Olivia was set to compete in Australia last year, but like so many other events, the competition was cancelled due to Covid. “She lives for diving and is very excited to be representing NZ,” Maegan says.

“She’s been watching Commonwealth divers Mikali Dawson and Maggie Squire, and has her heart set on one day competing at Commonwealth and Olympic level.” Olivia started as a gymnast with North Harbour Gym before moving into diving just over three years

Christmas Stress I love Christmas!. It’s always a wonderful time spent with family and friends. It’s just the lead up to it that is stressful! If you are feeling anxious as we head into Christmas this year, you are not alone.

Stress is very common at this time of year. But there are several things you can do to help yourself. From exercising regularly through to natural health products. At Unichem Manly Pharmacy we are lucky to have available our high strength practitioner only products.

Even when you think you have it under control, when we are stressed our bodies often start failing us. Our immune system gets run down and annoying things pop out, like mouth ulcers and cold stores for instance. A mouth ulcer is a painful pale coloured sore on the moist inner skin of the mouth. Stress is a major cause of mouth ulcers but other causes include injuries, low vitamin B’s, iron deficiency, as well as some more serious causes. The best way to prevent mouth ulcers is to avoid the triggers. However avoiding these is not always possible.

For one, Christmas IS coming!

So if you do find yourself with a mouth ulcer or three, the first treatment you’ll need, is to ensure good oral hygiene, like using hot salty water to rinse your mouth after eating. Products such as gels that ease the pain are available from the pharmacy, as well as pastes that stick to the ulcer, protect it from further damage and promote healing Since low Vitamin B’s can be a cause of mouth ulcers, it is worth considering a Vitamin B complex supplement for a short time. It’s also a good idea to check with our pharmacists to make sure there is nothing sinister to worry about.

Cold sores can also be activated by stress. Once caught, the herpes virus lies dormant in your body until activated, often at a most inconvenient moment (Christmas photos!!) and starts by tingling near where the blister is going to occur, typically on the lips. Within a few hours one or more blisters form which are usually very painful.

Unfortunately the blister itself is infectious so that means kissing under the mistletoe is at the kissee’s own risk!

Once you have had your first cold sore you remain infected, so there is no absolute cure. It can be re-activated by stress, sunburn, colds and flu’, dental work, and being run down.

Medicines are available at Unichem Manly Pharmacy to help you treat a cold sore. Some creams, such as Zovirax, must be used as soon as the warning signs appear in order to have an effect. Other cold sore creams are also available along with medicated patches. If you are suffering with cold sores regularly, consider taking lysine as studies indicate that taking at least 1200mg on a regular basis may help decrease the duration and frequency of cold sores.

Remember to take care of yourself leading up to Christmas ... so you can give Santa that kiss under the mistletoe!

Surf clubs ride wave of popularity

A record number of competitors took to the beach at Ōrewa on November 19 for the first Surf Life Saving Northern Region inter-club competition this summer.

Morning events concentrated on IRB racing, with other beach events including board races, surf skis, iron man, beach flags and beach sprints.

Northern Region membership services manager Zac Franich says the carnival is the first get-together for the new season and is more about bragging rights than competition.

“It’s just a bit of a hit out after winter,” he says. “The turnout was outstanding.

“Normally, we’d expect 10 or 12 clubs to be represented, but there were 263

competitors in Ōrewa, representing 14 clubs including Red Beach, Omaha and Waipu.”

Franich says surf clubs across the region are showing positive participation rates.

“We were curious to see what the impact Covid would have on numbers, as this was the first competition where there were no mass restrictions of any kind. Numbers

were even better than pre-Covid.”

Franich says all roads now lead to the regional championships in Whangamata in January/February. He said Red Beach and Ōrewa would send strong squads, with teams of up to 60 and 70 respectively.

The season will culminate with the national championships in Christchurch in March/April.
