Love Soup saves free Christmas lunch The free Christmas lunch that has been held in Ōrewa since 2000 was to be cancelled this year, but Love Soup Hibiscus Coast is determined to make it happen – with the community’s help.

Each Christmas Day, the free lunch at Ōrewa Community Hall is held for anyone who is alone at Christmas, in need, or simply wants to share the feast with others.

Usually around 100-200 people attend.

The Salt Community Trust, which has organised the free lunch with the support of local churches for around 10 years, could not find anyone to lead it this year.

They were also unable to find a chef.

“Everyone is in the same boat this year, working harder than ever,” he says. “It takes a huge amount of effort at a busy time of year to do it well.”

General manager Nigel Debenham says he had been trying for three months, but it is a big commitment for the team leader, and

Last month, the board reluctantly decided to pull the plug. “We were so disappointed,” Nigel says. “We prayed for a solution.”

When Hibiscus Matters shared this news with Love Soup director Julie King last week, it brought up a lot of memories for her.

“It lifted my spirits, and the power of sharing love and food together was a big influence on starting Love Soup,” she says.

Although Love Soup is holding its own free Christmas dinner, on December 18, King decided to also take on the Ōrewa free lunch.

She quickly found a chef from among her team who is happy to help.

“I am so passionate about it – the Ōrewa lunch was a big part of our journey,” she says. “It must happen. I feel this is divine, and I’m excited.”

Debenham says Love Soup getting involved was the answer to his prayers.

The two organisations are now working together on the free lunch, but the leadin time is shorter than usual, and they are seeking help from the community.

There is no shortage of volunteers to help on the day, but among other challenges, they need to raise around $5000 and are also seeking sponsorship, support, and help with various roles needed to ensure the

Sites not ‘outstanding’ enough for protection An early European cemetery with at least six graves dated 18821905, and three sites associated with Maori occupation have been deemed historically significant, but not outstandingly so, and therefore they will not be evaluated further for protection by Auckland Council.

Members of the Waiwera Residents & Ratepayers Association applied to have the sites on privately owned land at 42 Werenui Road, protected (HM October 31) and member Pat Allen says they are very disappointed at Council’s response.

In the letter to the association, Council’s heritage unit manager, Noel Reardon, says that workloads are an issue.

“Being of potential outstanding historic heritage significance (or having the potential

to be identified as a Category A historic heritage place in the Auckland Unitary Plan) is the current threshold for a historic heritage evaluation to proceed. This is due to the unit’s current workloads. Other important work would need to be postponed or not completed to resource this evaluation.”

Council also suggests that the association considers undertaking further research to make a case for significance, or engage a qualified heritage specialist to evaluate the places.

Allen says the comprehensive Heritage NZ report of 2014 included in the application gave Council very clear directives that both the Maori sites and the early European cemetery should be protected.

He says the organisation is not going to give up.

Meetings with Heritage NZ, including the report’s author Bev Parslow, and Ngati Manuhiri are being arranged.

They also hope to seek a face-to-face meeting with the owners of the site, Everlast Enterprises.

“We’re left with a feeling that the decision could be about funding because we can’t comprehend how Council can ignore the report that it commissioned,” Allen says.

“We sympathise with those resourcing and funding issues – but there is a growing disquiet that Waiwera has been put on the back burner pending what happens around the pools. We are not going to take this lying down.”

Hibiscus Matters was unable to contact Everlast Enterprises, for comment.

Penlink design changes ‘too little and too late’ Councillor says The public got its second look at the design of the O Mahurangi Penlink road last week.

The original design was presented to the public three months ago and has since been refined.

An Open Day was held by the alliance formed to build the project (Waka Kotahi, Fulton Hogan, HEB Construction, Aurecon and Tonkin & Taylor) on November 9 at The Archer, near where the new road will intersect with Whangaparāoa Road.

It is that intersection that is causing the most concern for some residents, especially those who live near the new connection, and Albany Ward councillor Wayne Walker.

Cr Walker says although the new design has improvements that will mean less delays, the signalised intersection will still pause the traffic flow and has the potential to back up in the rush hour for those heading towards Silverdale on Whangaparāoa Road.

“It could shift the bottleneck from Silverdale to the centre of the peninsula,” he says.

The changes include adding another westbound lane, after Cedar Terrace, heading onto Penlink, which Waka Kotahi says is because updated traffic predictions showed a need to future proof capacity.

This has made the road six lanes at its widest point.

At the Open Day last week, a member of the design team said she was being asked ‘why is [the road] so big?’ She said the number of lanes now make it a highly efficient part of the network, designed to ensure there is no congestion at that point.

“We are committed to making this work for Whangaparāoa Road, so no-one will need to rat-run,” she said. “The lights are on 70-second phasing – so that should be the maximum wait time.”

Cr Walker disagrees, saying for many commuters, Vipond Road, not designed for high volumes of traffic, will become the preferred route because it bypasses the new intersection.

“There will be more stress on other parts of the network,” he says.

He says the design clearly prioritises Penlink over Whangaparāoa Road.

“Being cynical, I could say it is making the toll road the more attractive option, but it’s not in the best interests of traffic flow.”

When the design was first revealed to the public, in August, it became clear how significant the intersection is. Originally a T-intersection with Beverley Road had been suggested on preliminary images but instead,

the design showed Penlink continuing further south to flow into Whangaparāoa Road near New World supermarket. This was to prevent Beverley Road from becoming part of a major intersection, and also allows construction to be less disruptive. Waka Kotahi has said that during most of the construction time, motorists, cyclists and pedestrians will be able to continue to use Whangaparāoa Road as usual.

Design changes made since then are, Waka Kotahi says, to improve outcomes for the environment and the community, following more detailed traffic counts and observations.

Cr Walker says he would have liked to see more designs put on the table back in August. It is now too late, he says.

Although resource consents are all in place, he says Waka Kotahi still has to demonstrate to Auckland Council that what it is doing is not too different from what was originally proposed.

“In my opinion the intersection is a lot different,” he says.

“Alternatives should have been put on the table, but there is a reluctance to do that. They just want to tweak what they have already got. There has been too little

engagement with the community on the design, and it’s come too late.”

He is considering holding a community meeting on the issue, but is seeking more information first.

“It’s counting down – there is no time to lose,” he says.

What happens now

• Following the Open Day, the O Mahurangi team will consider feedback from the community, directly affected neighbours and local businesses to inform the detailed design. • Enabling works start in January with main construction scheduled to commence in October 2023.

The build will begin from the SH1 end, then move into Stillwater, the bridge over the Weiti River and the Whangaparāoa Peninsula side last. Completion is estimated to be in December, 2026. • Government is yet to decide whether or not the road will be tolled. Waka Kotahi was to provide information and analysis of the 3337 submissions made about tolling on its website in June, but this has not yet been made public. • Feedback on the new design closed on November 18. Turning right onto Whangaparāoa Road out of Cedar Terrace is hazardous, and the latest design has taken that into consideration and means motorists will only be able to make left turns in and out of Cedar Terrace once O Mahurangi Penlink is built.

Cedar Terrace resident Paul Dobson says, while drivers rarely turn right out of the road now, the change makes a bad design even worse.

He was hoping access could be improved in and out of Cedar Terrace, perhaps by re-routing it across the reserve to join the signalised intersection.

“When cars bank up at the lights it will be even harder to get out,” he says.

“Coming from Silverdale, we will need to do a U turn to get into Cedar Terrace.

He has communicated his concerns to Waka Kotahi, but says apart from the update on the new plan he has been ignored.

Waka Kotahi transport services project director, Norman Collier, says the creation of the second westbound lane on Whangaparāoa Road to join Penlink means that right turns in and out of Cedar Terrace would be unsafe. This is because vehicles would have to cross multiple lanes of traffic, and slowing vehicles would cause safety issues.

“Motorists will be able to use the Whangaparāoa Road/Scott Road intersection for right-hand turns,” he says. “Higher numbers of right-turn out manoeuvres are observed at this intersection, suggesting motorists are already using this route.”

Right hand turns out of Scott Road onto Whangaparāoa Road are already used as an alternative by Cedar Terrace residents, but can also be unsafe. Collier says additional measures are being considered at the Scott Road intersection to improve safety.

Dobson says that Cedar Terrace will also be affected by noise from the new road.

“It’s a quiet street at the moment, but with no noise barriers planned, we expect that to change. We had a meeting with Fulton Hogan and were told there was a noise report about the likely effects on local residents,” Dobson says.

He has been asking to see that report but so far without success. Hibiscus Matters will also request this – if necessary, through the Official Information Act.

Stanmore speed issues raised again Stanmore Bay residents are petitioning Auckland Transport (AT), asking for new measures to combat speeding cars on Brightside and Stanmore Bay Roads.

The petition was started by Liezel Kilian, who says cars speed on Brightside Road both day and night.

“We are sick of hearing tyres squealing and want to see something done before someone is hurt,” Kilian says.

She says in the year she’s lived in the area, there have been two accidents, both resulting from drivers speeding up the road. Her family’s much loved cat died after being hit by a car.

With the Leisure Centre, sports clubs, schools, and early childhood facilities as well as a dairy and fish and chip shop in the neighbourhood, there are a lot of people,

including children and youth, walking and cycling.

Kilian says more pedestrian crossings and speed humps would help but so far when she has spoken to AT and Auckland Council they have denied there is a problem.

“Just bringing the speed down doesn’t work because people don’t obey it,” she says. “There need to be some drastic steps.”

The petition asks for a reduction in speed limits, speed bumps and speed cameras as well as more safe pedestrian crossings and footpaths on Brightside Road and Stanmore Bay Roads.

Waka Kotahi/NZ Transport Agency crash analysis figures show that there were 13 crashes on Brightside Road in the five years 2017-22. In this period there were two serious crashes, four minor crashes

and seven where no injuries occurred.

There were no fatal crashes in the period.

Incidents not reported to Police do not show up in the Waka Kotahi figures.

Spokesperson Natalie Polley says AT is currently investigating the possibility of installing a raised zebra crossing near the Langton Road intersection with Brightside Road.

Back in April, residents of Langton Road also petitioned AT and made a presentation to the Hibiscus & Bays Local Board asking for measures to slow traffic and make it safer for pedestrians. At the time, AT said it was aware that there are speeding issues on Langton and Kauri Roads and that AT is committed to installing more prominent speed signs there.

Government brings fire dispute back to table

Ōrewa arrest thanks to watchful community Fleet-footed Police officers went the extra mile, following an alleged offender through several Ōrewa properties recently in order to apprehend him.

Shortly before 5pm on Wednesday, November 2, Police responded to reports of a suspicious male at residential properties in Ōrewa.

The man was not located at that stage, however later the same evening Police observed a vehicle of interest and attempted to speak to the driver who matched the description of the person.

The man subsequently fled, running through several properties in a bid to evade capture.

The Police Air Support Unit, Eagle, was nearby and maintained observations as the suspect ran on to a roof, and over fences, before being apprehended by Police.

A 32-year-old has since appeared in the North Shore District Court on several charges, including escaping custody.

As this matter is before the Courts, Police have no further comment.

Waitemata North area commander, Inspector Matt Laurenson, says Police would like to thank members of the public for reporting suspicious behaviour.

“The community’s information can often be beneficial to an investigation, and we encourage people to report any suspicious behaviour,” he says.

Reports can be made by contacting 105 after an event or calling 111 while an incident is still happening.

Further protests by local career firefighters were called off this month as the parties work with central Government towards a possible settlement.

The November strikes would have been the third round of protests to be held since August, when the dispute between the firefighters’ union and Fire and Emergency NZ (FENZ) failed to reach resolution.

Career firefighters are seeking improvements to wages and conditions,

including better resourcing of stations.

Last week the NZ Professional Firefighters’ Union advised members that Government had put forward a proposal and negotiations had recommenced.

However, the union also stated its view that the Government proposal, while it could assist with settlement, “will not, on its own, settle systemic issues including staffing, safe systems of work, health and wellness and low wages”.

The parties met on Wednesday, November 9.

In light of this, two protests, on November 4 and 7, were called off but as Hibiscus Matters went to print, strike notices were still in place for November 11 and 14.

Silverdale’s senior station officer, Steve Robinson, says firefighters do not want to strike, and are hopeful that this latest round of talks could be constructive.

A memorial event will be held in Ōrewa this week as part of the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, to remember those killed and injured in crashes and to thank emergency services for the work they do. The event, coordinated by road safety charity Brake, is held annually at Ōrewa Beach Reserve.

Families who have been bereaved or injured in crashes, emergency services personnel, support organisations and anyone else who wants to pay tribute to those affected by crashes are invited to attend. This is the eighth time the event has taken place in Ōrewa – it includes a memorial ceremony and the switching on of the Norfolk Pine tree lights. The event is on Sunday, November 20, at Ōrewa Beach Reserve (opposite the surf club), 7.30pm.

Election whirlwind It certainly has been a bit of a whirlwind with the not only the local board campaign but also the Auckland Mayoralty campaign.

Although I was disappointed with coming 5th out of 22 candidates for the Mayoralty race I was very satisfied with what I had learnt on the journey and it was definitely an eye opener to get an understanding of the process of how to work your way up the rankings.

In the local board elections, I must admit I was humbled to receive the highest votes of 10,405 and certainly will ensure that I work as hard as I can for our area as chairman of the Hibiscus & Bays Local Board. In this new term of Council I hope to see some more projects get closer to the completion stage.

The completion of the Ōrewa Boulevard extension is not far away and I believe is going to be a real asset to the Hibiscus Coast and also all the thousands of visitors who enjoy our facilities in the summer months.

It’ll be great when Penlink has its ground broken to start that project and I know that the local board will be pushing for a new bus terminal at the Whangaparāoa end of Penlink for ease of travelling on the buses.

It’s great to see so many family events being planned for the Hibiscus Coast area, which

I’m sure will be enjoyed by our community.

It certainly has been a tough couple of years but with these event taking place (mostly free), let’s hope it puts a smile on everyone’s face and brings our community back together again.

On a personal note, I have more performances confirmed for the next few months so it will be a thrill to be back up on stage entertaining and hopefully making people forget about their worries for a few hours.

In recent months, Waka Kotahi’s Penlink project team carried out investigations for unexploded devices on part of the route. This is because the Americans used the area for target practice in World War II. The investigations took place on the southeastern corner of East Coast Road, and the Ara Weiti Road intersection. Around 1.4ha were searched and cleared. As well as 11 horseshoes, numerous lengths of wire, short lengths of chain and a couple of star pickets, the tail of a mortar was found (pictured).

Delivering more, but not for less

Starting this week, regular users of the Local Matters website will notice a few changes.

Access to most of the site – the What’s On calendar, local jobs, business directory and classifieds – will remain free, but readers in future will be asked to make a small contribution towards some of the stories they see on our site.

The revenue raised from charging for premium content will be invested in our newsrooms. It is a fairly simple exchange, but one that we expect to be a bumpy ride because for too long, media organisations have been giving their content away for free. This has built an expectation that it should always be free.

However, the idea of introducing a small charge for premium content to support good journalism has been rolling out internationally for many years. One of the first adherents in New Zealand was the National Business Review which has had a paywall since 2009.

NZME, which prints the NZ Herald, followed suit 10 years later. Some other media organisations have gone down a different path to fund their news.

For instance, writing in The Conversation, the codirector of the AUT research centre for Journalism, Media and Democracy, Merja Myllylahti, predicted that Stuff, which prints the Rodney Times, would never introduce a paywall because it had built its revenue model on e-commerce activities and was now selling broadband access, electricity and health insurance among other things.

But here at Local Matters, which prints both the Mahurangi Matters and the Hibiscus Matters, we want to stay focussed on our core business – keeping our communities informed with balanced, reliable and up-to-date information. Funding this just through advertising is no longer a viable option.

So, if you go on our site and are asked to pay to read a story, remember … the stories and photos you want to see don’t get there by magic. It takes the effort of trained journalists, often working evenings and on weekends, to deliver those stories. The survival of local journalism relies on readers recognising and accepting the need to put their hands in their pockets occasionally to contribute to this.

We understand that it can be frustrating to want to read a story and find yourself blocked by a paywall.

We have endeavoured to make the process as simple as possible, but if you have suggestions on how we can improve the experience we would welcome hearing from you.

Local news does matter – it keeps us connected as a community, (tries) to keep the politicians honest and often gives a voice to the disenfranchised. We thank you in advance for your understanding of the journey we are on and hope you will join us.

Like many that I speak to, I am baffled about the positioning of the bollards on The Esplanade in Manly. Sure, they protect the trees, but the really damaged areas have been left alone. I hope the new local board will take a good hard look at this again when it can and try to address the damaged areas as soon as possible – surely that was the whole point?

Absent candidates

Hearty congratulations to all the councillors and local board representatives elected to our area. It can’t have been easy campaigning amid such obvious apathy and indifference.

There is a lot of hand-wringing now about why more people don’t vote.

Some blame the media. I would simply put it down to apathy and laziness.

Around here, at least, there was heaps of information – in your local paper especially – about candidates and you only had to go online to find profiles and information. There were meetings held locally that more should have come to.

Anyone who gave a damn could check it out. I hope that the fact the majority didn’t vote means the majority will also cease grizzling when things don’t play out as they hope they would. I would say though – where were the Mayoral candidates? Apart from the local one, Gary Brown, and, briefly, Craig Lord, none of them even showed their faces.

A precious ring that was lost on October 19 was returned to its owner last week thanks to Campbell Hill, who found it, and a post on Hibiscus Matters’ facebook page.

Denise Gilmour of Ōrewa was devastated when she lost her gold and diamond ring – it was the first ring she bought for herself, many years ago, and was on her finger as she travelled around the world. Denise’s daughter, Sheree Holbrook, helped her search and left contact details around the Silverdale Centre, where it went missing, as well as posting on Facebook and filing a Police report Nothing turned up until last week when Campbell Hill, who is partially sighted, and his support worker, asked the Hibiscus Matters team for help.

He had found the ring at the Silverdale Countdown checkout not long after it was lost, and was unsure how to find the owner. A post on the newspaper’s Facebook page on November 4 did the trick – Sheree says when she told her mother it was found, she burst into tears.

The family gave Campbell a Countdown voucher and card in thanks. “Thank you so much Hibiscus Matters, and the wonderful gentleman who found mum’s ring,” Sheree says.

A fashion parade held outside on Moana reserve went so well that there are calls for it to become a regular event. An audience of more than 200 people watched the parade, on Saturday, November 5, including 140 ticket holders and people who watched from the reserve. It was organised by business association Destination Ōrewa Beach. Operations manager, Hellen Wilkins, said the parade showcased the diversity of fashion on offer in Ōrewa. Twelve local retailers took part, as well as Estuary Arts Centre. “The wearable arts section

No professional models were used – and two of them are Hibiscus Matters staff, graphic designer Lorry McCarthy and ad rep Angela Gallagher. Lorry modelled a wearable artwork called Hine Moana, made by Mayhla Howells. It included hand woven plastic strips and can tabs. Angela modelled for Main Street. Both thoroughly enjoyed the experience, especially the supportive crowd and the atmosphere. Hellen said feedback has been in favour of making the event an annual one, and that Destination Ōrewa will try to make that happen. She said the event could not have taken place without the sponsorship of Rosalind Warren from Rosalind Real Estate.

Out and about over the summer break Two words that strike terror into the heart of parents – school holidays.

It’s a time when six more words are almost certain to test their patience: “I’m bored, there’s nothing to do.”

With the summer holidays just around the corner, we can help you with that.

Out and About Auckland are hosting a range of fun free events designed to get children and whānau of all ages active over the summer break.

The events help connect residents to nature and focus on keeping more Aucklanders living healthy and active lives through play, recreation and sport.

There are activities across the city, ranging from treasure hunts to junk play, and wacky wheels to sea-kayaking, all hosted at parks and reserves.

The Out and About Activation programme is funded by the Hibiscus and Bays Local Board. That keeps it free, but some events do require you to register, and it is best to do so as early as you can to avoid disappointment.

Chair Gary Brown says people love events and with summer just around the corner, it is a great time to be outdoors with family and friends enjoying our beautiful parks.

“We often hear how much people want to connect with others and get out and about, these events are a fantastic way to do that.”

Our Out and About teams post information on where they are and what they are up to on their own Facebook page – OutandAboutAKL. You can also access detailed programme lists at aucklandleisure.co.nz by searching for Out and About, which will take you to a page with activities by Board area.

The programme has operated since the October school holidays, when Tariq went to a wacky wheels session with his sister Taya and cousin Cordelia.

You don’t have to restrict yourself to your local area and are more than welcome to attend events in other areas.

And if you are still stuck, check out your local library.

It’s been a long time since you’d get shushed in one of our libraries, and today you are more likely to find a bunch of great people only to keen to help you find a treasure from the shelves.

The city’s extensive network of libraries also offers school holiday fun, catering from the littlest citizen to older youngsters - and increasingly for adults too, with lectures, events, courses, help with family research and dozens of other activities.

The website www.aucklandlibraries.govt.nz has an events tab you can click that will take you to a page listing activities all over the city, and just like Out and About, you are welcome to attend those outside your immediate area.

But the beauty of the site is that you can search for events in your particular area, perhaps where a friend you’d like to catch up with lives, or just neighbouring areas.

Auckland Libraries also has a Facebook page of its own – aucklandlibraries – and individual libraries do too, just hop on Facebook and search for the one you want, for instance Ōrewa Library, or Whangaparāoa Library.

But the festive season is not so festive for many.

The expectations that go with Christmas can magnify existing financial pressures, leading to heightened stress and anxiety.

So, Hibiscus Matters is once again collecting Christmas treats for those in need, as well as supporting local businesses, with our Buy Local Give Local appeal.

This year, we are sharing the love (and all that wonderful treat food) between Love Soup in Whangaparāoa, the Hibiscus Coast Community House foodbank in Ōrewa and Salt Community Trust’s Silverdale-based foodbank.

We are asking you, our readers, to donate food or vouchers for Coast families who might otherwise struggle to make Christmas festive.

We are looking for the sort of food you would like to see on your Christmas table, or under the tree, and vouchers from any local businesses, including supermarkets, petrol stations, book or toy stores and so on (list below). To support local businesses, we hope you make those purchases from outlets on the Coast.

Hibiscus Coast Community House “Our foodbank makes up Christmas food parcels for Age Concern, Rodney Adult Mental Health and Steps Forward. They are custom made for local families, or elderly people on their own. It means making up

a lot of parcels in a short timeframe, and we often don’t have enough to fill them up and make them spectacular and festive so the donations to Buy Local Give Local take that pressure off. Vouchers are also added to the parcels, or used to top up the foodbank – last year we spent $700 in one shop for the foodbank at Christmas. By last month, the foodbank had provided 303 parcels – last year it was 300 in total for the year and last year we provided 63 Christmas parcels, which helped 147 people.

Who is ‘unknown candidate’ Mitchell?

Many Coast voters, including Whangaparāoa MP Mark Mitchell, were asking who Nicholas Mitchell is, following the election that saw him almost get onto the Hibiscus & Bays Local Board.

That is because, unlike the others who were elected, he did not actively campaign, relying solely on the information and photo he provided for the election booklet that is sent out with voting papers.

Not the end for Mr Taco

Four members are elected to the Hibiscus subdivision of the local board and Mitchell polled fifth with 5426 votes, 192 behind Jake Law who took the fourth spot.

He also came in 385 votes ahead of former local board member Andy Dunn.

The 32-year-old (no relation to Mark Mitchell MP) was born and raised on the Coast and lives in Stillwater with his partner, Laura.

He has a Bachelor of Commerce and a background in finance, planning and strategy.

He stood as an independent and says the election result took him by surprise.

“I decided to stand at the very last minute, just a few days before the cut off,” he says. “I saw publicity that there were not enough candidates in the local election and I thought that was a shame. I took a photo, wrote a blurb and threw my hat in the ring.”

Mitchell is a digital marketing specialist but does not appear to have a big social media profile and says he did not promote his candidacy on those platforms.

He did not put up any billboards, chose not to go in Hibiscus Matters’ election special and did not attend the couple of local Meet the Candidate events.

“I do regret that now,” he says. “At the time I wasn’t sure how much difference those things would make.

But if I’d done some of that, I might have squeaked in.”

Mitchell sees the result as “a testament to the people of the Hibiscus Coast who were not influenced by marketing campaigns and billboards, but simply read what was on offer in the booklet and made a decision that way”.

“I hope it encourages others to give it a go next election, because it shows you don’t have to spend a

lot of money on a campaign to have a chance,” he says.

He has not decided whether to stand again in three years’ time.

“This experience proved I’m a credible candidate and have something to offer. I really would focus on the things I wrote about in the booklet,” he says.

This included protecting the coastline and green spaces, building effective transport infrastructure, fostering a strong sense of community and supporting the local economy.

“My partner and I love this area and I stood out of a sense of duty. It’s not what everyone wants to do, but I think everyone should take an interest in our government and care that they make good decisions.”

There was a lot of disappointment expressed on social media when this Ōrewa restaurant, Mr Taco, closed at the end of last month because it was unable to get an alcohol licence.

Owner Manuel Moreno Gonzalez had been trying to get a licence for around six months. He says he is sad to have had to close Mr Taco, but he is still hoping the licence issue can be resolved so that he can open again, elsewhere in Ōrewa. He owns another Mexican restaurant in the Auckland CBD. There was much speculation on social media as to why an alcohol licence was not granted to Mr Taco. Auckland Council received the company’s liquor licence application April 21 and it was withdrawn on October 28, following opposition from the Police.

There were no objections to the licence from members of the public and Council had not issued its decision, as the application had not gone before the District Licensing Committee for determination before it was withdrawn. Police confirm they opposed the application but would make no further comment regarding why.

Gonzalez told the paper last week that he has not given up on getting the licence, and wants to come back and start up again in a different Ōrewa location.

“I like the people there, and they like my food,” he says.

He says he is working through issues with the Police and hopes to have progress by Christmas.

Another Mexican restaurant is hoping to open on the former Mr Taco site in Tamariki Ave – Gonzalez says the new owners are friends of his from Mexico. They applied for a liquor licence on October 19 and Council is currently processing this.

Meanwhile, the Government plans to change the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012 with the aim of making it easier for communities to set their own rules around the sale of alcohol in their area.

The current laws allow liquor stores and supermarkets to block councils from limiting the sale of alcohol. A Bill proposing changes to the alcohol licensing process will be introduced this year, with the aim of passing it into law by the middle of next year.

Coast environment rate results

Auckland Council’s Governing Body held an Extraordinary Meeting last week to discuss the current financial projections of the council group as part of its Annual Budget process.

The natural environment and water quality targeted rates are set to pool together $880 million across 10 years for Auckland Council.

Both rates have been extended after claiming some big successes in the four years since they began.

Former mayor Phil Goff said that the targeted rates came about after concerns that there were lots of projects that needed funding but no room in the budget to do them. He said at the time that most councillors supported [the rates] and described the outcomes as “fantastic”.

Reports have been compiled for local boards across Auckland to help raise awareness of what specific projects these targeted rates have funded.

For the Hibiscus and Bays area, four water quality assessments were conducted including one in Matakatia Bay. The results of the tests are not out yet but will determine if further investigation is needed.

The closing the gap programme, which looks to control sedimentation on small building sites, conducted 915 site visits in Hibiscus and Bays with a compliance rate of almost 63 percent.

Under the natural environment targeted rate, Alice Eves scenic reserve had its track upgraded and stage two of that work is expected to be completed this term.

Aerial thermal imaging surveillance confirmed there were no wallabies on private land from north Ōrewa, west to Puhoi.

Council partnered with Trees for Survival, getting schools involved in planting efforts along waterways and educating students. The planting was jointly funded by the natural environment and water quality targeted rates. Two planting days were held locally and three schools in the Hibiscus and Bays area participated in the programme.

The natural environmental rate is predominantly focused on pest control – both plant and animal pests.

Funding from the rate locally went to organisations like Restore Hibiscus and Bays, which received $22,000 for pest monitoring and control and $15,000 for administrator’s wages. The rate also funded $714 for handsaws to help with

Council considers how to fill budget hole

In a press release, Gudsell says these options include prudent use of debt, higher general rates increases, asset ownership options, capital expenditure changes, increasing nonrates revenue, working with central government on ways to approach funding and financing, and reductions to operational expenditure which could affect council services.

Different options will have different consequences, and some will provide more sustainable and enduring benefits in future years than others, Gudsell says.

Mayor Wayne Brown issued a press release on November 7 saying that the additional $270 million will be found “through a combination of head office savings, operational efficiencies, scrutiny of the expenditure and commercial performance of CCOs and the port, and limited rates rises.”

Following the November 10 meeting, the Governing Body will hold a workshop to discuss the issues further. Local boards and council-controlled organisations (CCOs) will also provide input.

On December 15, the Governing Body will meet to decide which options to take forward to public consultation early next year.

Final budget decisions will be made after that consultation and prior to adoption of the final Annual Budget by June 30, 2023.

Site, ecology and Maori view under scrutiny at tip hearing The appeal hearing against Waste Management NZ’s (WM) plans to construct a giant landfill near the Dome Valley resumed in the Environment Court on October 25 after a break of more than two months.

The unscheduled break in proceedings was at the request of WM to allow it time for site assessment with a “specific cultural lens”, meaning the case will continue well into next year before it can be decided.

Since the case reopened, witnesses appearing for WM have been grilled on a range of specific aspects concerning the proposed tip and its construction, including how and why the Wayby site was selected, the intricacies of sediment load calculation and forecasting, and whether proposed activities to mitigate, offset and/ or compensate for damage to ecological habitat or species are sufficient.

There were also repeated challenges from lawyers representing Ngati Whatua, Ngati Whatua Orakei and the Manuhiri Kaitiaki Charitable Trust (Ngati Manuhiri) on when, and even if, Maori values had been assessed or taken into account during the site selection process and various ecological assessments since.

Conversely, WM counsel have been crossexamining expert ecologist witnesses for the other parties appealing against Auckland Council’s decision to grant resource consent for the new landfill – DoC, Forest & Bird and Fight the Tip. Simone Eldridge, who was responsible for overseeing research and reports into site selection for the new landfill at consultant engineers Tonkin & Taylor, was quizzed over the precise order that different potential sites were considered by WM, and at what stage ecological and cultural assessments had been carried out at the chosen Wayby site.

The court heard that until early 2017, sites at Woodhill Forest and south of State Highway 1 near Awawere Stream were favoured by WM; Wayby was down the list at fourth. However, when the preferred route

for the Warkworth-Wellsford motorway was announced, which also went south of SH1, Awawere was dropped, as was Woodhill after discussions on its future use.

Judge Jeff Smith was concerned that there was a lack of documentation recording the exact details of when and why key sites were dropped or reconsidered.

“In April 2016, a decision was made to only advance the Awawere Stream site in that footprint. WM made that decision to continue with that one. That was a critical decision, there are some consequences of that, but I can’t find a record of it anywhere,” he said.

“There are no documents supporting Woodhill no longer being appropriate, or for Wayby being better.”

Eldridge conceded that there weren’t, but said there had been regular meeting updates and it was quite common for sites to go in and out of favour as new information became available.

Smith then put it to her that there hadn’t been proper examination of the ecological and cultural values of Wayby until after the purchase of Springhill in May, 2017.

Eldridge said it was often difficult to get access for such assessments prior to owning a property.

“It’s been very robust, I don’t think it’s been inadequate,” she said, though added that with the benefit of hindsight, more integration of the Maori world view would have been valuable.

Andrew Braggins, for Fight the Tip, questioned WM general manager Ian Kennedy on why former WM managing director Tom Nickels had said in a TV interview in 2018 that “you won’t see the landfill, you won’t smell the landfill, you won’t hear the landfill” and that the local community wouldn’t even notice it was there.

“That was a comment Tom Nickel has made, I haven’t made that claim to anyone and personally, I probably wouldn’t,” Kennedy said.

“You will hear it, but it won’t be offensive;

you might see trucks going in, and I believe you will be able to see landfill from Wellsford in the final stages, as it reaches its peak.

“With respect, this hearing is based on evidence of experts, not on comments to the press.”

Braggins said he was simply trying to get his head around what the WM board thought when it was making its decisions and why Nickels would have said what he said.

The court also spent several days hearing detailed questioning on precisely how much sediment may or may not be produced, not only from construction of the landfill itself, but the harvesting of surrounding pine forest, and whether

the package of environmental mitigation, including a lengthy pest-free fence and species relocation, met the requirements laid down for landfill construction, or could compensate for the loss of around 12km of streams.

Concerns were also raised by the panel of judges and commissioners over how long the case was taking and when it might be heard next year.

“The parties are a long way apart on the matter of conditions. We might need a (separate) hearing if consent were granted,” Judge Smith warned.

The case continues.

More single use items get the heave-ho

If single-use coffee cups no longer existed, what would you do?

Take a moment to close your eyes and think about a world without them. Perhaps you’d be outraged; you’d complain to your mates and you’d give the barista a hard time as they handed over your reusable cup (from a nationwide return system), or suggested you sit in to have your coffee.

Or maybe you wouldn’t blink an eye at the change because you’re already part of the ‘no (reusable) cup, no coffee’ club (or, as I like to call it, ‘the clever club’). Either way, we all need to work out our feelings towards a single-use food and drink packaging free reality, because it’s coming.

On October 1, single-use plastic drink stirrers, plastic cotton buds, polystyrene takeaway food and beverage packaging, plastics with pro-degradant additives, and certain PVC food trays and containers were deemed illegal to be manufactured, provided, or sold in Aotearoa New Zealand.

This was the first stage of legislation that will continue to be rolled out over the next three years. In mid-2023 we’ll see produce bags, plastic plates, bowls, cutlery, and plastic produce labels take their leave, and by mid-2025 all other PVC food and drink packaging will be banned.

How will I eat my takeaway, I hear you saying! Change is hard, but first and foremost, it’s important to remember that the world existed, and we all got by, without plastic food and drink packaging – and that wasn’t too long ago either.

Single use plastic is a relatively new commodity and it was popular because of convenience but it now needs to be phased out for the benefits of our planet and our people.

Secondly, reuse systems will expand across the country to ensure you don’t have to slurp your coffee out of your hand or ask for your curry to be poured into your pockets.

Reuse schemes have been proven to be effective in other parts of the world and this country will not be the first to struggle through the initial change, before forgetting single-use plastic serviceware ever existed!

Exemptions will be made to ensure the new laws are inclusive of everyone’s needs (such as medical requirements) and I know you won’t miss the sharp edges of the disposable coffee cup lid slightly cutting the corners of your mouth as you slurp, or the sound of your flimsy takeaway container cracking as you lift it from your bag.

Reuse systems will ensure you don’t have to slurp your coffee out of your hand or ask for your curry to be poured into your pockets.

It will require food and beverage outlets to adapt, and, no doubt there will be challenges with this. Depending on what systems replace disposables, it could mean more cleaning – but also hopefully some big savings for business owners. These will come from not having to purchase single use packaging and a reduction in rubbish disposal costs.

We’ve known for a long time that there are major environmental repercussions from single use plastic, but now we’re seeing Government take action, we can all transition to reusables in a much more efficient way that doesn’t solely rely on us remembering to bring our own containers.

Spring Chicken Bake

Everyone loves to cook a complete onedish meal to serve up straight from the pan, making life easy. Tossing everything into a pan or casserole to roast, braise, simmer or even cook away for hours in the slow cooker will develop lovely flavours and doesn’t create piles of dishes to clean up afterwards.

Recently, we have seen a plethora of recipes that are presented as the ‘tray bake’. This is a brilliant technique based on the good old fashioned roast, where a large cut of meat like a lamb leg or a topside of beef was surrounded by vegetables and roasted for several hours for the traditional Sunday roast dinner. It is probably only in this century that food writers, who amplify the trends to give us the recipes most frequently used, have introduced the idea of gathering seasonal vegetables, alongside simple portions of protein, to spread out in one layer on a tray to bake a complete meal in under one hour.

Personally, I still love a portion of meat or fish most nights and try to keep those portions quite small as we’re all thinking about eating more lightly for both the good of the planet and for better health outcomes. But this method of cooking is a perfect way to create a vegetarian meal.

Spring has brought an abundance of tender young vegetables that are perfect companions in a tray bake. Back on those chilly winter days that have now departed, the best bet for veggies in this method of cooking was to chop up a variety of root vegetables. Now, new season baby carrots, potatoes, spring onions, fennel bulbs, young beans, baby or cherry tomatoes and so much more are ideal for this.

One thing to consider is it’s important to get the timing right. If you toss in tender fresh green vegetables or little tomatoes

5 tbsps extra virgin olive oil 2 tsps spice mix (see my notes about spice mixes, above) Salt and pepper Fresh parsley or basil leaves to decorate

at the start of the cooking time they will be completely overcooked by the time potatoes and chicken are ready, so add the delicate vegetables with only 20 or 35 minutes to go. A delicious new season’s olive oil is essential to adding great flavour, but it is fine to use a mild cooking oil if that’s what you have in your pantry. Don’t be afraid of adding salt, as that tends to enhance flavour, too.

Fresh herbs and spice mixes are a valuable way to introduce more flavour to savoury cooking. The spice section in most supermarkets has grown so much as spicy food has become a real trend that we all love

in food. Take time to explore what’s offered.

With such a selection of spices, it’s not easy to choose but food manufacturers put together blends of spices so cooks don’t have to have endless packets of single spices in the pantry.

Easy to find are some of the Masterfoods blends – one of my personal favourites is their Moroccan Spice Blend, which I used for this chicken recipe. Also worth seeking out is the Alexandra’s range. Baharat, ras el hanout, berbere, chermoula and zahtar are all excellent mixtures of spices and herbs to keep in their handy little jars. As with all spices, do not keep the jars past their use by date as they should be fresh and spicy.

Prepare an oven tray by lining it with baking paper. Set the oven to 200°C. Place the chicken legs, potatoes and carrots in one layer in the dish, spreading out evenly. Slice the fennel bulb in two lengthwise and cut each half into about four wedges. Add these to the tray, poking them between the chicken and vegetables.

Drizzle the olive oil over everything, and sprinkle the spice mix and the rosemary leaves over. Season with plenty of salt and pepper and place the tray in the centre of the oven to bake for 30 minutes.

After 30 minutes, remove the tray from the oven and add the tomatoes and asparagus, distributing them evenly. Use a spoon to gather up the juices from the bottom of the tray and spoon it over everything. Return the tray to the oven and continue to cook for about 20 minutes longer until it is all golden and tender.

Serve at once with a few fresh herb leaves strewn over. This recipe serves two generously, but can be scaled up by increasing everything.

Whisky down a dark alley

From garden to kitchen The Whangaparāoa home school gardening kids have been busy planting up the little community garden behind Whangaparāoa Community Hall.

Recently the children decided to also use the kitchen facilities inside the hall to learn how to cook, while they wait for the potatoes and strawberries to be ready for harvest.

The trial run was a huge success. Soup was made from fresh garden vegetables and, just like TV cooking shows, Tracey Hoey at Love Soup donated a ‘mystery box’ of baking ingredients.

After scrutiny of the box’s contents, it was agreed that muffins would be easiest. After a lesson from Love Soup in food preparation health and safety, the kids, along with their

hair nets and baking bowls, were ready to go, supervised by their parents.

Banana muffins were followed by turning pumpkins into scones. The cooks themselves ate some of their baking, and the rest was packaged, labelled, and went into food parcels for Coast families.

The success of this enterprise means that it will be a regular activity for the home school gardeners, and they are asking for donations of cake tins for the goodies to go into.

Donations can be made to the Love Soup koha table every Sunday at 4.30pm in the Whangaparāoa Community Hall.

Or come and visit the families in the garden on Monday or Thursday between 10am-11.30am.

What’s on at Estuary Arts in November

There are two things common in all living beings that drive evolution for most of us – survival and reproduction. Food and sex.

Thailand. We were asked to meet the dealer in a dark alley with a bag of cash. We were strictly asked to remain in the car.

No wonder when religion arrived for humans, food and sex became heavily regulated. The beauty of human evolution is that the brain that came up with these regulations is also the architect of our rebellion against them.

The dealer was late. My evolved brain started thinking about how this will all go wrong. I imagined a police car screeching and the police officers screaming – “freeze”!

I was so enamoured with Hollywood, that even my imagined arrest in Karachi involved American police.

This brings me to my own religious background. I grew up in a Muslim society; in a country that was created in the name of the religion. As expected, food and sex are heavily regulated in Islam. For this article I will just focus on food. Most people are aware that a practicing Muslim will not eat pork or drink alcohol. Naturally, growing up, my brain compelled me to rebel against these conventions.

Alcohol and pork are both illegal in Pakistan.

When I turned 19, I decided I must try the evil that is alcohol. I called my friend who was already dabbling in beer and conveyed to him the urgency of the need to lose my alcohol virginity.

It was a true feeling for danger because for someone of limited means, it is hard to get your hands on alcohol in Pakistan. My friend only had experience of cheap beer made in Pakistan. However, I was inspired by Hollywood. I wanted some real whiskey. So, we had to call someone, who had to call the dealer to vouch for us. Once appropriate references were made, I called the dealer. Extremely nervous, I asked for Jack Daniels. That was the only name I knew. Luckily, the dealer had access to some Jack Daniels bootlegged from

Oh, there he is! An old Daihatsu Charade pulls in parallel to our car. His window rolls down, our window rolls down, he throws in a paper bag with a bottle in our car, and we throw in a bag of money in his car. Done.

Now for the drinking. All we knew was Hollywood drinking. They don’t use mixers in the movies. In the movies the whiskey is in the decanter. The boss pours it in a glass for the rogue police officer before asking the officer for his badge and gun. The hero complains, finishes his drink, and storms off.

I am mixing scenes, but you get the gist.

That is how we drank that night. Within the first five minutes, I had finished two glasses of whiskey. Within half an hour, all that whiskey was already out of my body. Alas it was not the magical experience that I had imagined.

I didn’t drink for a year. I researched. Became acquainted with the true conventions of drinking whiskey. Learned the importance of time, water, and food. Now I am a painfully slow and limited drinker.

Am I going to burn in hell for drinking? I suppose I will find out one day. Until then.

Creative take on takeout

With necessity being the mother of invention, Kawau Bay Kitchen owners Imogen Witt and Jeremy Watson, found new ways to avoid food waste and attract customers during lockdowns.

Those ideas proved so successful they are bringing them back this summer as a more permanent string to the Ōrewa restaurant’s bow.

“Our menu is not the kind of food you can adapt to traditional takeaways, so in lockdown we dreamed up the meal kit,” Imogen says.

The kits contain food prepared by the Kawau Bay Kitchen chef, portioned, cooled, then put in bags to be picked up or dropped off to customers. Instructions and wine pairing advice are provided, and the meals are reheated and plated up at home, with minimal work required, providing restaurant quality at home.

It met a need in lockdown – Imogen says they sold more than 80 of the first kit when

they first offered it. Options like confit duck legs and eggplant parmigiana raced out the door.

“It was a way to reach people who hadn’t tried us before, and for our regulars to continue to support us.”

Imogen says they are bringing the meal kits back as they anticipate a “super busy” summer ahead.

“We can already feel the demand is there, and if people pre-order the meal kits, we won’t have to turn customers away.

Another gourmet takeaway option they will offer is grazing platters which they first offered a year ago for the Melbourne Cup. “The platters are restaurant quality, made by a really good chef and contain things that are a little bit different – nice artisan foods,” Imogen says. “We will have fold away tables and blankets available to hire too so people can head to the beach or park with everything they need.”

Big effort for tiny birds on Manly Beach

Volunteers are keeping a close eye on a pair of NZ dotterels, or tūturiwhatu, with three eggs in their nest at the Cross Street end of Big Manly Beach.

The nest site the birds selected is near the high tide mark – a nest in a similar spot two years ago was washed away. Any storm is a threat and, as the nest is on a busy part of the beach, dogs off the leash is a further concern.

The same pair nested on the lawns of some homes at the other end of the beach last year and successfully raised a chick there. Earlier this season they nested at Manly Fire Station and lost those eggs to hedgehog predation.

A huge effort, including erecting a fence and signs, and filling dozens of sandbags to create a barrier against the tide, is being put in by a large group of volunteers, mostly Manly locals.

Jenny Hanwell of Hibiscus Coast Forest & Bird held a dotterel information evening in September, seeking support in protecting the birds, and many of the volunteers stepped forward then.

They include Derek Kelsey, a keen bird watcher, who was inspired to get involved when he saw last year’s dotterel chick take its first flight at Manly.

Diane Waring lives near the fire station, and seeing the pair nest there sparked her interest.

“I was gutted when the hedgehogs predated the nest, and when the same pair nested again on the beach, I couldn’t let it go,” she says.

Manly residents Kate and Richard Sheffield take regular walks on the beach, and say that has made them feel “a bit responsible” for what happens to the birds.

Volunteer efforts will ramp up more in the coming week, as the eggs are expected to hatch soon.

will be some regular minders on watch every day. It is around 45 days before the chicks take their first flight and in that period they are very vulnerable.

“The young birds are not fed by the parents,” Hanwell says, “but they show them how to do it, so there is a lot of moving around as they learn to feed.”

“Responsible dog owners are aware that their dogs need to be leashed while the birds are there, and they are letting others know,” Derek says.

Another pair of dotterels has been seen at the other end of the beach, and volunteers are alert in case this pair also nest.

NZ dotterels are rarer than some species of kiwi and have become a regular sight on Hibiscus Coast beaches as well as at Shakespear Regional Park.

still dependent on conservation efforts.

As Hibiscus Matters went to print, volunteers were adding more sandbags around the seaward side of the nest, as high tides and bad weather were expected. There is also the possibility that the eggs could be removed and later replaced on the nest if need be.

Environmental group Friends of Okura Bush (FOOB) is seeing a worrying number of domestic cats in live catch traps.

In 10 months, 13 cats, (five of which were pets, not feral cats), have been caught in areas that include private property behind Karepiro Beach and the rare Cheneir formation at Stillwater – both areas are important ecological sites and home to endemic and migratory shorebirds such as Pateke, or brown teal, NZ dotterels, banded rail and bar-tailed godwits.

Brown teal/pateke are usually found in pest proof sanctuaries but have bred on the Stillwater Chenier in recent years. This breeding season the pair were sitting on a nest but haven’t been seen in recent weeks.

Members of FOOB fear cats may be the cause.

Live trapping requires volunteers to check the cage every day, for the animal’s welfare.

When a cat is caught, it is carried out, and taken to the closest vet to be checked for a microchip.

Of the domestic cats trapped recently whose owners were located via microchip, all were from homes in Stillwater.

FOOB is calling for cat owners living close to these biodiverse areas to contain their cats between dusk and dawn, and hopes for future legislation regarding responsible cat ownership.

Local businesses are getting into the festive spirit, preparing to take part in the annual Ōrewa Santa Parade.

The parade departs at 4.30pm and travels along Hibiscus Coast Highway to the Ōrewa Surf Club carpark.

Organisers Destination Ōrewa Beach anticipate there will be around 50-60 floats taking part.

Last time the parade was held, in 2020, it broke all its previous crowd attendance records by around 40 percent, with spectators lining the 1.6km route 3-5 deep – bringing estimated numbers to around 8000-9000.

This was, in part, due to Santa parades in nearby areas being cancelled that year.

This year’s parade will include classic, collector and hot rod cars, cheerleader and dance performances and an appearance by Batman.

Sammy the Steam engine, cartoon characters and Harold the Giraffe of Life Education Trust will be there.

Entertainers such as Jiggles the Clown and cheerleaders will perform on Moana Reserve from 3.30pm while the crowd gets settled in, and Ōrewa Lions will have a sausage sizzle at the start point of the parade, on the corner of Florence and Alice Aves.

Organisers Destination Ōrewa Beach ask that if there are families sitting along the parade route where there is crowd control fencing, please sit behind the fencing and keep children, however excited they are to see Santa, off the road.

The Ōrewa Surf Sounds concert begins straight after the parade, featuring local band Rewind with their 60’s, 70’s and 80’s hits on the main stage. The firework finale will go off at around 9pm.

Hibiscus Coast Highway between Riverside and Centreway Roads will be closed to all traffic from 8.45pm until all pedestrians have safely vacated the event site. There will be substantial detours in place so anyone able to walk to the event is advised to do so.

The burning question It is strange to think that a volcanic eruption in Tonga in January could make my face burn on Labour Day, but researchers have speculated that the explosion temporarily damaged our ozone layer in New Zealand, allowing our sun to burn us quicker this summer. Your choice of sunscreen this year has never been more important. So what do you need to know to choose the right sunscreen for you and your family?

• Chemical versus physical?

There are two main types of sunscreen. A chemical sunscreen absorbs UV rays, converts them into energy and releases it from the body. Whereas physical sunscreens simply deflect the rays, without the need for this chemical reaction. Both come with benefits and drawbacks. For instance, physical sunscreens are less likely to irritate the skin and chemical ones are easier to rub in.

• Spray or lotion?

While sprays seem more convenient, to ensure a uniform covering over your body, you will still need to rub sunscreen in. Using a lotion means you don’t have to suck in all the aerosol while doing so!

• Water resistant or not?

If you’re planning on swimming (or for that matter simply sweating) then water resistance should be a factor in choosing your sunscreen. Always remember to reapply after drying off and every two hours.

• What SPF is best?

FANTAILS

The reality is that we are not the best at applying our sunscreens, so it is best to have a higher safety margin and use at least SPF 50.

• Face or body?

Since the skin on the face and body differ, it is worth considering separate sunscreens for each. Face sunscreens with tint can provide your face with that healthy glow. And don’t forget your lips – they are very sensitive We and don’t respond well to sunburn!

The ‘sunscreen teaspoon rule’ states that for an adult, the recommended application is one teaspoonful (5ml) for each arm leg, body front, body back and face (including neck and ears) which means you should use seven teaspoons for each application.

Also remember if you are using a chemical sunscreen you’ll need to wait 20 minutes for the chemical reaction with your skin to take place before you go outside.

The Wade Hotel in Silverdale was the final stop for drivers from this year’s Gumboot rally.

“I’ve been doing it nine years and this year we finally chose a charity with just the right name!” Mike says.

A total of $6000 was raised from entry fees and donations.

Anyone who loves plants and gardening should put the upcoming Hibiscus Coast Garden Club show, to be held in Manly, in their diary. As well as being open to the public, the show on November 21, is a competition for members and, with 36 categories, there will be plenty of flowers, fruit and vegetables and floral art on display. Originally named Whangaparāoa Horticultural Society, the club was founded in 1966 and changed its name in 2016. Membership is growing, having recently reached 113 – a five-year high. President Marion McCracken says members come from all over the Coast – from Wainui to Gulf Harbour. They range in age from people in new subdivisions who want to learn how to garden in small spaces to those in retirement villages who have gardened all their lives and want to keep that connection, even if their current gardening is limited. Vice president Glenys Ferguson says the resurgence in interest in home gardening due to lockdown, and the rising cost of fresh fruit and vegetables, has attracted more members. Glenys, who has “46 roses and thousands of weeds” in her Army Bay garden, says gardening remains a rewarding hobby. “You get into the garden and lose all sense of time – before you know it, you’ve been there for hours,” she says. Member Zelma Armstrong says a highlight of this month’s show will be the always impressive rose section and the floral art arranged by talented members.

Market showcases Kensington creativity Residents of Kensington Park in Ōrewa are busy making and baking for their first Show and Sell market, which is open to the public and will be held on Saturday, November 19.

Organisers Lyn Hodgkiss and Sandi Halling say there are a lot of creative people living in Kensington Park. Around 15 stalls, plus a large baking and preserves stand, will be at the market. Sewing, knitting, artworks and ceramics are included.

Lyn says the idea is to bring the public in, as well as raise money for Hibiscus Hospice.

Her work as a massage therapist made her aware of the therapeutic value of a warm wheat bag and she’s been making them for around 20 years.

Sandi began making reversible patchwork aprons in 1988 – they are practical, but also designed to impress dinner party guests, she says.

The market is in the Kensington Park grounds, 1 Parkside Drive, Ōrewa (look for the tents), 2pm-5pm. Eftpos, online banking and cash accepted.

Walking netball popular

‘Why run when you can walk?’ is the idea behind Walking Netball – a low impact version of the game introduced last month at the Stanmore Bay Pool & Leisure Centre. It features modifications that mean games include no running or jumping, just walking. It is promoted as ideal for those returning to the game, recovering from injury or wanting a relaxed version of the game. While it is relaxed, organisers say it is definitely still competitive! So far Walking Netball has proved popular, with around 25 people showing up every week to take part. You can join in at any time – games take place every Thursday at the Leisure Centre, 10am-11am and cost $5 per game. There is no need to pre-register, just turn up and you will be put in a team.

Weaving looms Blast from the past large at Estuary Arts Susanne Wilson

Judy Utting of Peninsula Weavers – works have been made on many different types of loom.

Woven works that include scarves and shawls, cushions, tapestry and even a dog collar are on display at Estuary Arts Centre until November 27.

Everything in the Splash of Red show has been made in the homes of the Peninsula Weavers – a group with around 22 members – many spin their own yarn as well.

Co-chair Judy Utting points out that weaving is an ancient craft that is focused on making things that are functional and wearable as well as intricate and beautiful.

Her own work in the show includes a dog collar, seat cover and scarves.

Looms used by members include everything from small portable Inkle looms right up

to Compudobby computerised looms and the yarns used include cotton, wool, silk and upholstery fabric.

Judy took up weaving after seeing a weaver at work at Estuary Arts Centre, although her mother, now aged 95, was a commercial weaver in Holland.

“My mother never touched a loom again after she left Holland in 1953, so I’ve seen things she’s made, but never seen her actually weaving,” Judy says.

The exhibition is on until November 27 at Estuary Arts Centre in Ōrewa.

More clothes swaps coming

Organisers say the Hibiscus Coast Clothes Swap, held at Whangaparāoa Hall on Saturday, November 5, was a great success. Forty participants brought clothes to the swap. Only a few pieces were left over and these were donated to Love Soup and the Hope Shop in Manly village. Local crafter Louisa Rull manned a sewing table, where participants could learn simple mending techniques. Co-organiser, Lena Kovac, says the event enables residents to reduce the effects of the textile industry on the environment, while refreshing their wardrobes. They hope to hold clothing swap events twice a year in future. This event was funded by Auckland Council and facilitated by Hibiscus Coast Zero Waste. Organisers thank Whangaparāoa Hall for free use of the venue, and Two Spoons café for a coffee discount.

Tennis club serves 70 years As Whangaparāoa Tennis Club looks back, as it celebrates its 70th anniversary this month, it is also looking ahead, hoping to finally achieve its aim of adding two courts alongside its existing ones on Edith Hopper Reserve.

The club started in the early 1950s on the site that is now the Manly Park Seniors Tennis Club – the Minutes of the Citizens and Ratepayers Association that built the original courts suggest it was around November 22, 1952.

Membership fees in 1952 were set at £1.10p for men, £1.05pence for women and a mere 10p for juniors!

Over the years club membership has surged along with the population growth in the area. The club shifted to the current location in Edith Hopper Reserve in 1978.

Currently membership is at 350 – including 200 juniors.

President Alf Sayer says the club is thriving, almost back to pre-Covid-19 membership numbers.

Animals the heart of school Ag Day The heart of Dairy Flat School’s Ag Day, is students with their animals, organisers say, and this year was no different.

Children paraded their hand-reared orphan lambs, calves and goats for judging and also brought along chickens they had

raised from chicks.

This year’s event, on Saturday, October 29, was the 79th Ag Day. Pony rides, the ‘make your own lollipop’ stall, food of every kind, market stalls and games such as Kick It were also big

drawcards.

The theme for this year’s scarecrow making competition, ‘zany animals’, brought out the creativity of the children and their families.

The Young Farmer was won by Sam Franes-Stead.

The event is a big fundraiser for the school and brought in around $18,000. This will go towards setting up the Garden to Table programme next year.

Principal Katie Hills says next year there will new activities added.

Lifesaver smashes it at Worlds An Ōrewa surf lifesaver who made the NZ junior team recently returned from the World Champs in Italy with three medals.

George Wenman has been a member of Ōrewa Surf Lifesaving Club since he was a 7-year-old nipper. He says he felt privileged to be representing his country at the Worlds (50 countries competed in total) and it was a big goal achieved.

The 18-year-old says he was determined to do everything he could to make the national team – this included spending six weeks in Australia taking part in the Australian nationals as that was one event that selectors had their eyes on.

The NZ team travelled to Italy late in September and spent a week training before competition began. The event involved three days of beach and sea racing and three days in the pool.

“Luckily for me, the conditions on the

beach were exactly like Ōrewa so that was a huge advantage,” George says.

George’s medals were for second in male beach sprint relay and taplin, and third in board rescue. Overall, the NZ junior team came second.

“It was a huge experience, but when I got back last month it was straight back into surf training as though nothing had happened,” he says.

George has his own successful vehicle detailing business and says this funds his overseas surf racing.

Next he has his sights set on the 2024 Worlds, which will be held in Australia.

Coast boxers take club to next level A boxing club in Silverdale is punching above its weight, with its fighters bringing home a fistful of medals from the recent NZ Boxing Championships.

Coast Boxing had five fighters (coached by Ben Williams and Nikolas Charalampous) selected for last month’s national competition – four were in the Auckland Association team.

Manager Melissa Whittaker says it’s the first time the club has had any fighters in the Auckland team, so it was very satisfying to win three medals – a Gold, and two Silvers.

The Gold in the Youth Male, 71kg category, went to Kyan Hand, aged 17. Sixteen year old Takara Adams won Silver (Youth Female 60kg) and Mia Dins got Silver in the Elite (adult) Female, 66kg division.

The other two Coast Boxing fighters who took part in the competition were Te Kapotai Tohu (TK), 23 in the Elite

Male 92kg and Devin Smith, aged 18, in Youth Male 75kg.

Following the competition, Hand, Adams and Smith have all have been selected for the National Youth Development programme, which will bring opportunities for them to fight overseas and attend training camps with the best youth in the country.

Melissa says the club, which caters for children and adults, including classes for mums, Boxfit, beginners and fighters, has established a very good reputation, especially in the last year.

She says boxing provides a really positive focus.

“There’s no doubt it helps keep young people out of trouble. They develop a real passion for the sport and it’s so good for all aspects of mental health,” she says. “They become good role models.”

Currently it has 50 members, aged from 5 to 60 years.

Thirty busy hours We were extremely lucky with the weather over Labour weekend with Saturday and Sunday playing ball wind and sun wise which meant the Hauraki Gulf was extremely busy.

Coastguard Hibiscus was on the water for the full three days and while Saturday was quiet from a tasking perspective, Sunday and Monday did not disappoint.

On Monday alone our volunteers were out on the water for over 11 hours making sure everyone got home safely.

On Monday we had an early morning page to assist a vessel from the back of Little Barrier back to Gulf Harbour marina. The morning had a lovely 10 knots of wind, however this increased quickly to 20 knots as we approached Little Barrier. This meant that our tow speed had to be reduced to around 10 knots which makes a very long tow, and we did not get back to Gulf Harbour until around 3pm.

In total, 30 hours on the water, 1000 litres of fuel and some very tired crew on Labour Weekend alone.

Check your life jackets The benefits of inflatable life jackets are clear – lightweight, comfortable and compact.

Therefore, more of these jackets are finding their way into the market as boaties and fisherman realise they can happily wear one all day.

However, what a lot of these people do not realise is that the mechanisms that triggers these jackets to inflate need to be checked each year to ensure everything is operational.

All it involves is a couple of simple steps to make sure your inflatable is up to scratch and will work when you need it to most.

Halfway through refuelling we were paged again urgently to a yacht that was just outside the marina with sail drive issues and was dragging anchor towards the breakwater.

Check all zips, buckles, waist belts and all other fastening mechanisms and devices for excessive wear, cracking, fraying corrosion or anything to indicate possible loss of strength.

The weather had turned to 30 knots easterly and this made it even more urgent as it was blowing directly towards the rocks. The owners were extremely relieved to see us, and that was another job done. While that was taking place, another trailer sailor had mechanical difficulties and needed help getting back to the boat ramp, so we shot out again. We did however do a crew change beforehand as these taskings take a toll on our volunteers

Check that the lifejacket has not been previously activated as the cylinder can only be used once, so check that the green or red clip is in place and that the cylinder does not have a hole pierced in the top and if it does – replace the cylinder. Replacement cylinders can be purchased from most marine supply shops.

Rowing alongside Olympic Gold medallist Eric Murray was fun, and informative, for Big Buddy fundraiser Blair Cranston.

Olympian joins rowing fundraiser Since 62-year-old Blair Cranston began his epic fundraiser for the Big Buddy charity in September, he has completed 1450km on rowing machines and raised around $3000.

In total, he will row 1892km – the distance from NZ to Australia – and hopes to reach his target by November 25.

The Stanmore Bay Bayleys Real Estate agent’s efforts were boosted on November 2 by a visit from Olympic rower Eric Murray, who rowed 10km alongside him on machines outside Club Physical in Coast Plaza. He also brought his Olympic medals

for the public to take a close look at.

Murray had plenty of advice for Blair as they rowed. Most of it was about a smooth and efficient rowing technique, but he also offered advice on how to deal with the callouses on Blair’s hands, which have opened up as he has been rowing for more than two hours every day.

“Whip them off with a knife,” was Murray’s suggestion.

Big Buddy is a charity that matches 7-14-year-old boys who do not have a father in their lives with men who can be a reliable mentor and friend. Blair has been a

Big Buddy to Linus for two years which is why he is a champion of this cause.

Donations wanted

It is the final few weeks of the fundraiser, and more donations are needed.
