this lockdown that there are a lot more businesses in a lot more trouble.”

Clarry, who owns Little Manly’s Whangaparaoa Lodge, says he is frustrated that the Government has not recognised the unique problems faced by the hospitality sector.

“The hit we take from lockdowns is heavier and hurts more than almost any other business,” he says. “You can see this already in Orewa and will certainly notice the closure of businesses whenever we come out of these lockdowns.”

Together with backing from Destination Orewa, Silverdale Business and Business Whangaparaoa, Clarry and Hospitality NZ are advocating for targeted support for the next two to three months, and are emailing government ministers and local MPs. “Level 2 is not much and Level 3 is nothing for many of our businesses,” he says.

“Hospitality venues have had as little as zero income for up to three and half months since March last year. They will not get back to the old Level 2, when they can possibly break even, for many weeks yet.”

Ōrewa Medical began offering the vaccine to the public before lockdown, and, by last week, had given 11,200 jabs.

Weiti Creek Medical recently announced that it had hit the 10,000 mark – this includes its Bunnings carpark drivethrough.

Key to being able to offer the service is having the space – some clinics, including Whangaparāoa Medical, made this work by vaccinating in their carpark.

Manly Medical also used car parking space to provide a local testing service.

Silverdale United Rugby Club recognised that it did have the space and worked with Pharmacy Care Group to provide a service

in its clubrooms, with no appointments necessary. North Shore Airport in Dairy Flat also shared its facility, offering a drivethrough service operated by the DHB. The most recent addition to the rollout was Manly Unichem Pharmacy, which also offered a drive-through during Level 4.

Life Pharmacy Ōrewa began giving the jabs early this month. Pharmacist Antony Wentworth says the additional capacity locally means that although booking is still required, walk-in vaccination will soon become the norm.

Council is considering whether to bin its current rubbish collection scheme.

50 more homes challenge Scott Road

Residents fear that Scott Road in Whangaparāoa may struggle to cope with traffic from the additional 50 homes being built there.

The road is narrow and already has a high volume of traffic, according to Sandra Gillooly, who has lived there for more than 20 years.

She says residents are worried.

There is a footpath on only one side of the road, and she says any more traffic will render it unsafe for families and older people living there.

“I know that there is great need for housing and I am not opposed to it,” she says. “I just wish that the infrastructure was considered.”

In fact, a consent for a 50-home development at 40A Scott Road was granted five years ago, and then varied in April last year to allow work on the subdivision to proceed.

The company behind the project is NZ Highland Development, with three directors – Xiaohong Chen, Xiaoyu Liu and Tina Yang, all of Auckland.

Scott Road comes out onto Whangaparāoa Road near New World – already a busy place to get in and out of.

“Each of those 50 houses has capacity for two cars, so that is at least 50 and possibly up to 100 more cars on a suburban road,” Sandra says.

Stage 1 is on the market. Sections range from 450sqm to 600sqm and will be sold as house and land packages.

Subdivision sought for Weiti River site The first step in subdividing a largely rural site on Chenery Road, Red Beach, into 33 homes began with a resource consent application to Auckland Council almost a year ago. The 6.37ha site is mainly pasture, with sheep, alpaca and goats grazing. It goes down to the Weiti River – this part includes a Unitary Plan Significant Ecological Area as well as a High Natural Character area, with native bush along the water’s edge.

The site is zoned Residential Large Lot and Coastal – General Coastal Marine. A development company called HND RB (incorporated in May last year) owns the land. Its directors are Xiaomiao Fan and Yaxun Zhang, both of Hobsonville. The resource consent application, prepared by Cato Bolam, states that “extensive areas of landscape and ecological significance are proposed for protection, additional riparian waterways will be planted and protected, and an esplanade reserve and strip will be created along the edge of the Weiti River”. The proposal includes removing some large native and exotic trees, but no riparian vegetation will be removed. During earthworks, the application states that there will be “appropriate erosion and sediment controls to ensure that waterways and the nearby marine environment are protected from silt”. Council planners sought more information and have not yet decided whether or not to grant the application.

Rubbish collection funding examined

How Hibiscus Coast residents pay for kerbside rubbish collection is under review by Auckland Council.

There are two systems in Auckland – just over half (55 percent) have rates-funded schemes and the rest have the system on the Coast, which is buying rubbish bags or bins from commercial suppliers, who collect the rubbish – this is known as pay as you throw (PAYT). Recycling is funded by rates.

In looking to find a cost effective scheme for the whole of Auckland, moving everyone to either rates-funded rubbish collection or PAYT, is under consideration.

A key issue is the need to reduce waste at its source, which is why Council’s Waste Management and Minimisation Policy seeks an expansion of PAYT across Auckland. PAYT has been considered the best way to encourage waste generators to produce less waste.

Despite this, Council’s report put before the Hibiscus & Bays Local Board this month stated that a rates funded system is more cost-effective due to economies of scale. It also found no clear evidence that PAYT reduces the amount of rubbish thrown away.

“International evidence indicates the greatest waste minimisation is achieved through easy access to services that divert waste from landfill (such as recycling and food scraps collection), community education, and reduced access to refuse volume to encourage use of diversion services,” the report says.

However, the Hibiscus & Bays Local Board came down firmly on the side of PAYT, saying it is the most direct method of ensuring households actively minimise the generation of waste.

Council is talking with local boards, industry and community groups and will take its recommendations to the Environment and Climate Change Committee for a decision on October 14.

If the Committee opts to extend the rates-based option to the rest of Auckland, or stick with the current mixed model, there will be consultation during the Annual Plan 2022/23.

Council hopes the passage of its freedom camping bylaw will be smoother than last time.

Freedom camping roadshow begins again The thorny issue of freedom camping is again before the community, as Auckland Council releases its latest draft Freedom Camping in Vehicles bylaw.

This proposal has two key differences from the one that was thrown out by Council in 2019 after a controversial process that ended in a legal challenge.

While the new proposal has more teeth to exclude campers from reserves, it offers few other restrictions and opens up roads for freedom camping. This has been done to ensure there are freedom camping options, as required under the overarching Freedom Camping Act. On the Hibiscus Coast, most freedom camping issues occur on reserves – especially by the beach. The latest draft bylaw excludes freedom camping from all public reserves, relying on the fact that it is already prohibited there under the Reserves Act. In the past, this was often flouted. However, changes to the Reserves Act in September 2019 brought in $800 fines for breaches.

Locally, apart from restrictions on the Hammerhead at Gulf Harbour and a full prohibition at Metro Park East in Millwater (which is not classified as a reserve) the draft allows freedom camping on most roads and other areas, as long as it’s in a self-contained vehicle and the stay is for no more than two nights. Campers must not return to the same area within a two-week period.

At the Hammerhead, the proposal is for a maximum of 10 campervans within a defined area. The Hibiscus and Bays Local Board wants to double that number, but

only in the area that campervans currently use, in the seaward carpark off Laurie Southwick Parade.

The key concern for the local board is enforcement – members suggested revenue from the $800 fines could go towards this.

They also want the restrictions signposted.

Currently the Governing Body is considering increasing investment in bylaw enforcement. Options may include contracting security services (similar to noise control), using mobile printers to print infringement notices, and camera surveillance with remote monitoring.

Councillor John Watson says excluding reserves will hopefully see an end to incidents he observed last summer when large groups camped for weeks on reserves

by local beaches.

“This was often accompanied by antisocial behaviour and the commandeering of public facilities,” Cr Watson says.

He says there are still issues with allowing self-contained campers to stay in the same road for two nights. “Given that Council has to comply with the [Freedom Camping] Act but has limited compliance resources, that should be reduced to one night so there’s no doubt over the duration of stay,” he says.

At its meeting last week, September 23, the Governing Body adopted the proposal for public consultation. Consultation will take place October and November with the hope that the final bylaw can be adopted by next May.

Bus stop removal upsets passengers A bus stop in Silverdale was removed last month, upsetting and inconveniencing those who regularly use it. Stop 4789 was on Hibiscus Coast Highway, between Whangaparāoa Road and Titan Place.

Silverdale resident Lorraine Sampson, 73, used it regularly for around a decade.

She says students heading to North Shore colleges also used it, as well as workers in industrial Silverdale. The next stop down the highway on this side is the park and ride. “By removing it, Auckland Transport effectively made public transport more difficult.”

Lorraine says. “This flies in the face of its goal of encouraging public transport use.”

It has been noted in Hibiscus Matters before that the stop was unsafe – with no footpath, passengers stepped out virtually straight onto the highway. Lorraine is aware of this and has been campaigning for a footpath to make things safer. However, Auckland Transport spokesperson Mark Hannan says that was not the safety issue that drove the decision.

He says the stop was closed because of safety concerns raised by bus drivers. “There is no slowing down or accelerating zone for buses,” he says. The speed is currently 70kph on this part of the road. Until such time as the speed through here is lowered and/or Silverdale Street is signalised, this stop will remain closed.” Lorraine says the same could be said of other stops on the highway. “I wonder if we’re going to lose those too?” she says.

Member Andy Dunn said that by placing a ban in nearby bays, Council funnelled the problem into Matakatia.

“They are only asking for what neighbouring bays have in place,” he said.

Council can prohibit or restrict activities like set netting under its Public Safety and Nuisance bylaw.

Boat ramps survey ramping up At a Hibiscus & Bays Local Board workshop conducted by Skype on August 26, Auckland Council’s parks and places specialist, Jeff Lyford, said building new ramps would be too expensive, so the focus is on improving the performance of existing ramps.

With dozens of boat ramps in the area, Council asked the local board for a shortlist of those that need improvements or where more parking can be developed.

At the workshop, members raised issues at the Stanmore Bay and Hatfields Beach ramps, including the need to widen them to reduce waiting time for boaties.

Lyford told members that evidence of waiting times would be needed to create a case for improving the ramps.

Once the local board provides a list of priority ramps, those ramps will be surveyed to find out about current use.

A survey of a select few local boat ramps is about to take place with an eye towards improving those that are under pressure from high use.

Built on a promise

When Mariner Rise in Link Crescent on Whangaparāoa Peninsula got resource consent for a 60-home subdivision back in 2016, I told the developer I was surprised that the impact on the traffic network was described as “less than minor” – a popular resource consent term.

He said it was only 60 homes. Yes, but they are a mix of 2-4 bedroom homes, so potentially 120 more cars – or at the very least 60 cars and higher demand for buses.

As well as those 60 homes, there are another 20 across the road by Whangaparāoa College currently being built, potential for 33 at Chenery Rd and now 50 more in Scott Rd (both feature in this issue).

In Stanmore Bay, there is consent for 57 apartments in Brightside Rd. Last year consent was given for 29 homes at 455 Whangaparāoa Rd, next to the Peninsula Club, with access via a new intersection onto Whangaparāoa Rd. I bet developers are eyeing up the 2ha (some of which is covenant protected bush) at 400 Whangaparāoa Road where the little railway used to be. The land alongside Whangaparāoa Road up to Brightside – 23 residential properties there will eventually go up for sale, with the potential that they could be amalgamated and developed.

Real Estate agents say Gulf Harbour property is increasingly sought after and the former Peninsula Golf Club in Red Beach is rapidly reaching its potential 500 homes.

My point is that the bigger picture is not being seen. The peninsula is packed with with houses, mostly on the promise of Penlink, which on current predictions will be finished in late 2026 at the very earliest.

The lack of a dedicated public transport lane and increasing development will blunt Penlink’s long-term impact on traffic.

Limited local employment opportunities mean the rush hour is only going to become worse. And of course it’s not only transport infrastructure being squeezed – health providers, schools and community facilities also come under pressure.

During lockdown my partner challenged himself to cycle up and down every street within a 5km radius of our home on the peninsula. The sheer number of roads almost got the better of him.

I would challenge any Council planner to ‘get on their bike’ and take a good hard look at what is already here, and the infrastructure available, before they sign off on any future development on the peninsula – even if it is “only 60 homes”.

Cost blowout

It was with utter amazement that I read that Penlink had again been delayed (HM August 2) and I’m somewhat incredulous that NZTA’s national manager, Andy Thackwray was justifying the cost increase on being “partly due to increased property prices”. NZTA/Auckland Council already owns all, or the vast majority, of the land corridor required. The process of land purchase and compensation of affected landowners commenced over 20 years ago and the majority were acquired many years before this most recent cost increase. Sure the property market has gone mad but when you already own the property don’t use this to partly justify an incredulous two-year blowout of $400 million. I can accept the cost of construction as a significant factor where a project such as this would be competing with other major infrastructure projects and booming land development, which is soaking up contractors and construction companies. But $400 million over two years? Tell it how it is, don’t try and put up an unsupportable smokescreen. Most likely much of the significant cost increase would be due to “compliance”, having to provide a vast range of ridiculous, recently dreamt up environmental enhancements and a plethora of pointless professional reports.

Tenancy lockdown

Me and my wife Dannielle were given 63 days notice by our landlords on August 5, which was fine – until lockdown happened on the 17th. By that time we had only viewed three properties and only one was ok, but we didn’t get it. My landlords advised that the last day stands! How can this be possible, as you cannot view properties in lockdown? My question is: last lockdown the government canceled all notices given to tenants as they could not look for properties. Is this going to happen again? I want someone to ask questions that I cannot.

In her honour, the entire facility was decorated with balloons and streamers, there was cake, music and even a little socially distanced singing and dancing. Pinehaven’s facility manager, Jay Banks, says the celebration was a nice release from lockdown stresses for staff as well. “To be able to celebrate such a milestone, it helps you realise that life is for living even when not everything goes to plan,” Jay says. Violet has many friends at Pinehaven. Fellow resident Hilary Pedersen describes her as “tiny, sparkly and always smiling” with a presence that lights up a room. Born in Hawkes Bay, the young Violet also lived in Wellington. She has been a resident at Pinehaven for four years. Developer of The Botanic retirement village in Silverdale, Matvin Group, wants a botanic theme for its street names. Among the names put before the local board for approval this month were Evergreen, Perennial, Hydrangea, Lily, Sage, Daphne, Tangelo and Echinacea.

During Maori language week, earlier this month, Hibiscus Matters asked the team at the community marae, Te Herenga Waka o Ōrewa, what the paper’s name might be, translated into te reo. The organisation’s kaiwhakahaere (manager), Kereama Nathan, offered us a few options and we settled for: Ngā pānui Takutai Puarangi. Ngā pānui means readings, announcements or news. And Takutai Puarangi is a possible translation for the Hibiscus Coast (Puarangi is the Māori name for the Hibiscus plant).

Space savers needed Enjoyment of our open space – our local parks, beaches, bush reserves, and walkways – is more important than ever. In these ‘lockdown’ times they are in huge demand as Coasties get out for exercise, fresh air and the well-being that comes from walking, running, and biking in the outdoors. We are fortunate to have so many choices close at hand with a network of walkways that link to our beaches and parks. Even though these areas are busier than ever – especially when the weather is fine – there is generally plenty of space to maintain a distance.

Open spaces are also areas we can enjoy from a distance. The views from our houses out to sea, parks, trees, reserves and green spaces like golf courses add to the pleasure of where we live and enhance the value of our properties.

Battling to keep our open spaces – public and private – is also more important than ever. With Auckland’s intensification and the push for more housing to fit a bigger population, green spaces are under threat.

Section spaces around homes are smaller and apartment living is on the increase.

Gulf Harbour is a place and community that was planned around the green space that is the Gulf Harbour golf course. Although private, its green open space formed part of the planning consideration for reserves, stormwater, and the population density that infrastructure like roads, water and sewage can cope with. Losing the golf course as green space to housing would change all that – for locals and the Hibiscus Coast as a whole; the impact would be huge.

Challenging any potential moves by developers takes a campaign involving money and effort to stand up to the paid consultants who will say that the effects can be managed. They say it takes a village to raise a child, with campaigns like this it takes a village to stand together.

Our blue spaces need protecting too and it was heartening to see the Hibiscus and Bays Local Board unanimously back a resolution by member Leanne Willis for a seasonal set net ban at Matakatia Bay. Enjoyment of the beach and esplanade reserve has been severely compromised by on-going set netting on a daily and nightly basis.

The nuisance and public safety concerns prompted a well-evidenced presentation by local residents for a seasonal ban like those already in place at Arkles Bay, Te Haruhi and Shakespear beaches. Once approved with appropriate signs, the bans require little if any enforcement – they work – protecting people, fish stocks and the many dolphins and marine mammals that frequent our local beaches. The next step is public consultation and engagement and then a decision by the Regulatory Committee of Council.

Battling to keep our open spaces is more important than ever Time at home on the Coast for many of us has emphasised the importance of our surrounds – the green and blue spaces that make the Coast a great place to live.

Our ‘bubble’ has been fortunate to largely escape Covid in our community (as far as we know) and will bounce back quickly. Local vaccination centres have been busy. After weeks of working on-line at home (Council work keeps going with daily meetings via Skype and other platforms) I’m looking forward to supporting local businesses and clubs and enjoying the social interaction as lock-down restrictions ease.

Stay well and safe and look out for neighbours and friends, especially those living alone or needing support.

Ōrewa’s November Santa Parade can only take place in Alert Level 1.

Event organisers hold breath for Alert Level 1 Alert level changes mean anxious times for anyone organising events.

As well as health and safety, restricted numbers at gatherings mean most public events can only happen in Alert Level 1.

Three events that remain on the newspaper’s What’s On events calendar, for now, are the Ōrewa Santa Parade and two Galas/Ag Days which are major fundraisers for schools.

Work has been well underway on all these events for some time.

The Ōrewa Santa Parade is the biggest north of the harbour bridge – last year it drew an estimated crowd of 8000-9000. It is scheduled for Saturday, November 27.

Organiser of the event, the business association Destination Ōrewa Beach, has a lot to consider in a relatively short timeframe.

Operations manager Hellen Wilkins says out of respect for suppliers, attendees and participants, they would hope to make a call about continuing, deferring or cancelling as early as possible.

Dairy Flat School principal Katie Hills is confident that the much-loved Ag Day will go ahead in some form next month. It is scheduled for October 30. If Auckland is in Level 3 or 4, she says there will be a “virtual Ag Day”. “Students are working hard on their projects and rearing their animals so we want to celebrate this, even if we have to do it via Zoom,” Katie says. “We don’t know yet what that may look like. It might involve children videoing what their animals can do, for judging, and sharing things via Zoom.” In Level 2, the day could be scaled down for the school community only, not open to the general public. She says lockdown led to a bigger than ever uptake of animals – chickens, calves, goats and lambs – which students are getting ready to strut their stuff in the Ag Day showring. Students have also been able to focus on other Ag Day projects while at home. “So if we are not in lockdown, it will be an amazing Ag Day,” Katie says. Silverdale School’s Country Show Day is also on October 30. Principal Cameron Lockie says at the moment the event is still on, and will take place if Auckland is in Alert Level 1.

Town centre still under wraps As the Milldale subdivision’s 4000 plus homes take shape, the Hibiscus & Bays Local Board has expressed concerns about whether facilities on the Hibiscus Coast, such as libraries, arts and leisure centres, will be required to cater for those residents.

At a workshop on September 9, Auckland Council staff told board members it has been calculated that public facilities on the Coast have the capacity to include Milldale.

Several members expressed the view that with services such as Estuary Arts Centre and Centrestage Theatre currently underfunded, it would be unfair to expect those facilities to also cater for the residents of a subdivision in the neighbouring Rodney

When work began on Milldale, at the end of 2018, it was promoted as including shops, parks and other civic amenities, educational facilities and a town centre.

Milldale developer Fulton Hogan Land’s marketing consultant Warren Frogley says all of that is still being planned and discussed at a high level with Council.

“The central hub will have more than Millwater – proposed options include a library, theatre, shops, sports, and so on,” he says. “This takes a lot of time to put together and at present details are confidential but discussions are underway. We are only 750 lots into a 4000 plus home development.”

Cup recycling claims don’t stack up The Commerce Commission has warned a takeaway coffee cup manufacturer for misleading consumers by claiming its hot drink cups are recyclable. In theory, the cups are recyclable – but they can’t be recycled in NZ. The commission said Glopac NZ likely breached the Fair Trading Act by claiming its cups were recyclable, when hot drink takeaway cups aren’t currently accepted into recycling streams in NZ. Consumer NZ chief executive Jon Duffy labels these types of claims “greenwashing”. “Consumers want to do the right thing for the planet,” he says. “This type of greenwashing takes advantage of that goodwill for profit.

Companies need to take the shortcomings in NZ’s recycling systems into account before making claims that their products can be recycled. Recyclable ‘in theory’ doesn’t cut it.”

Two month carpark repair The carpark surrounding the Leisure Centre in Stanmore Bay is to be renewed. Work that had been scheduled to start at the end of August has now began (in Level 3). It is expected to take around eight weeks.

Carpark drainage improved Following concerns raised with the Hibiscus & Bays Local Board by Hibiscus Hockey Trust chair Merv Huxford regarding poor drainage in the Metro Park carpark, a new drain has been dug around the edge of the parking space. Rocks have also been positioned to prevent vehicles parking on surrounding grass areas.

The new bridge will be an extension of John Fair Drive. It will cross the motorway at the southern end of Milldale.

Building mastery recognised

Talented builders whose work features all around the Hibiscus Coast were recognised in the regional Master Builders Association’s House of the Year awards and are now in the running for a national title.

A feature of many of the homes was how much could be achieved in a small footprint, while some in the $1m plus categories were praised for having both luxury and character. Two local winners made the Top 100.

Due to the changing situation with Alert Levels, the Top 100 will not be re-judged to find national winners. Instead, the homes will be judged based on the regional scores.

Currently the national awards are to be presented on November 27 in Auckland.

Many in Milldale

Milldale to get another access point via new overpass Preliminary earthworks have begun on a new road bridge that will connect the southern end of Milldale with Highgate Business Park.

The two-lane motorway overpass will be built as an extension of John Fair Drive and connect as a T-junction with Highgate Parkway near the massive Infratil computer data centre currently under construction.

Milldale marketing consultant Warren Frogley says all the necessary consents are in place and detailed design for the bridge is well advanced.

“It is looking like an 18-month build, with completion expected around mid-2023,” he says. “The road from the Milldale side,

John Fair Drive, is complete already, and civil works have begun for the extension adjoining Highgate Parkway.”

Meanwhile, Frogley says remaining house lots in Milldale’s stage two and three sections will be released by the end of the year, with stage four coming on stream in 2022.

“Stage four includes a high density and mixed use zone, including a large reserve which is in the design stage. This will be the last part of that stage to be completed,” he says.

In addition, a new primary school for Milldale is set to open in time for the 2023 school year.

The majority of the local awards went to houses in Milldale. Ten houses in that developing area received awards – half of them show homes and most in the lower price category - $450,000-$600,000.

Growing orchid obsession in Hatfields

Orchids are easy to grow in Florida, where Laura Carson lived before moving to New Zealand 20 years ago.

Growing them here gave her another connection with home, but she says they were a lot more tricky to grow in the Auckland climate.

As a bit of an orchid connoisseur, she found good plants – and anything other than the garden centre phalaenopsis (moth orchids) or cymbidiums (boat orchids) – hard to get hold of, until a friend invited her to join the Hibiscus Coast Orchid Society.

Immediately this put her in touch with like-minded growers, and a source of many of the not-as-common varieties.

Sharing information and cuttings with other enthusiasts is a huge part of being a club member.

Laura has around 75 orchids filling various corners of her home and a covered deck – “I’m trying not to buy any more, but it’s impossible.”

“I only have one – they are not easy to find. It had nine blooms this year.”

However, Laura, who is a keen gardener, insists there is not a lot of hard work to growing orchids. Despite their looks, they are not all prima donnas.

She also likes “sarks” – Sarcochilus varieties – and Miltoniopsis and even confesses to a fondness for the ubiquitous cymbidium.

She has been a member of the club for five years and was recently made president.

It has been extremely disappointing for the club to see its popular annual spring show in Ōrewa, which was to have been held this month, cancelled by the lockdown.

“It’s our opportunity to show some of our plants in full bloom, and share them with the community, so we’re gutted to have to wait until next year,” she says.

Backyard trapping FAQ In the last year, more than 1200 residents have signed up for a free backyard rat trap as part of Forest & Bird’s Pest Free Hibiscus Coast project. Project manager Jenny Hanwell says their main reasons are to protect the 50 species of native birds that live on the Coast, and reduce the risk of rats causing damage to their properties. When residents are considering a trap there are concerns that are frequently raised with Jenny. She answers some of them here:

Auckland Council has secured $1.9m over two years from the DOC administered Jobs for Nature Fund to support kauri dieback work. It’s more than three years since the forested areas of the Waitākere Ranges closed to the public to contain the spread of kauri dieback disease and allow a re-evaluation of the tracks within the park. Since then, 26 Waitākere Ranges tracks have re-opened, and work is being carried out in other regional and local parks including Eaves’ Bush and Okura Bush. Council’s Natural Environment Targeted Rate has already funded considerable work, and this was extended in the recent 10-year budget. Mayor Phil Goff says the DOC funding is “a shot in the arm” and will enable an accelerated kauri protection programme and create jobs.

Stanmore Bay 7-year-old Jemma Johnson is part of an upcoming video series promoting positive thinking and improved self esteem for young children through song.

Jemma was only three when she first met children’s composer Judi Cranston, director of kindyRock.

Jemma has been involved in kindyRock ever since and has been in countless videos for the programme which features on TV and Youtube. Judi is releasing three affirmation videos for children – just in time for Mental Health Awareness week (27 September – 1 October). The songs are all from her album Amazing Affirmations for Kids and are suitable for 4-8 year olds.

The videos feature children singing with Judi. In order to take part, back in April, Jemma and her mum Nicky joined the others, who all go to Orere School near Kawakawa Bay where Judi lives. “Affirmations are a great way to instil a positive selfimage into children and adults, and using upbeat music to start the day helps set us up for a day filled with happiness,” Judi says. Greening the bubble Survival and gardening have gone hand in hand for centuries, but in the last 50 years we have perfected the art of the unproductive urban landscape while becoming nearly completely dependent on long, and highly oil-dependent, supply chains.

Gardening is about being prepared, and hopefully the lesson learned by this snap lockdown was to plan ahead, making sure, like the kitchen pantry, you have a small stock of seeds, seed sowing mix and a full compost bin.

I had trays of seedlings available that suddenly could not be planted in the school garden, which was off limits to everyone. I filled a wheelbarrow with seedlings and put it up by the letterbox with a sign saying ‘Free to a Good Garden’. I met lots of locals who were thankful for some plants that would help them engage their children in the outdoors.

The wonder of the edible garden is how quickly you can always have something to eat. Quick salad crops: radish, rocket, carrots, Asian greens, mizuna, mustard, tatsoi and a huge variety of eye-catching lettuces will provide endless salads and stir-fries.

Beans are an absolute staple – small French beans for a quick harvest and a variety of climbing beans for eating fresh and drying, to have a store of seeds to dry for future cooking and planting.

I practice a method that I call ‘survival gardening’ – should, for any reason, access to a plant-based diet be cut off, even a short time,

I would have enough produce for harvesting to feed my family. That means that I intercrop, succession plant, and grow a mix of annuals and perennials. Broccoli, spring onions, leeks, lettuces, Chinese cabbages, bok choi are all vegetables that can be ‘cut-and-come-again’, providing a long-term yield.

I also keep a few hens, although I have to admit their run has just been fenced and reduced by half. I ran out of gardening space and have taken the sunniest microclimate to plant an early crop of beans and set up containers for tomatoes.

Tiny crop made easy You can sprout microgreens on a kitchen bench or windowsill. All you need is a jam jar, a rubber band and a piece of multi-use muslin. Hopefully you have lentils, beans or mustard seeds in the cupboard. You’ll need a seed tray (a large takeaway tray from the recycling bin will do) and something to act as a drip tray underneath. Fill the tray with seed sowing mix. Raid the cupboard for anything that might sprout: popcorn kernels, coriander, whole lentils (split lentils won’t germinate), mung beans, chickpeas and dried peas are all ideal. Gently push each seed into the soil so it is just buried. Water to get your crops growing – remember, seeds prefer gentle watering. Place your mini farm somewhere light and warm, where you can keep an eye on it. Harvest with scissors and watch them regrow.

Wig Wednesday is a fun day where people wear a wig, style a funky hairdo or shave their head while raising money for the Child Cancer Foundation. It was scheduled to take place on September 8, but different alert levels across the country means many fundraisers are either moving events online or postponing them until later this month – September is also Childhood Cancer Awareness month. Foundation chief executive, Monica Briggs, says there’s no doubt that lockdown makes things difficult for Wig Wednesday fundraisers. “However, our fundraisers have adapted to the alert levels in their regions and are moving forward remotely,” she says. “We are so grateful for their flexibility and excited to see how creative they can be given the circumstances. The virtual visit The way we visit the doctor is changing.

Over the past year, in response to the global pandemic, virtual GP appointments have become the norm.

As a GP, I love people. I love to learn from every patient I see, and enjoy every interaction.

I am the first to admit that I was somewhat nervous when we were first advised we would be conducting phone and video consults. I am not particularly proficient at using technology, and I was wary of the limitations involved in using this media.

However, I went forward with an open mind, and I am now starting to enjoy this novel way of managing patients. Video consults in particular, are extremely rewarding. You can see a patient’s face (without it being obscured by a mask), and generally it is possible to assess things such as skin rashes, or discuss mental health concerns. The huge benefit to the patient is that they don’t need to leave home. Photos can be sent through to further aid the assessment of rashes, in particular.

Most prescriptions can be emailed to the pharmacy, which means that patients do not even have to come to the clinic to collect these. If bloods are required, lab forms can automatically be sent to the laboratory, and patients can present to the lab for these.

Of course there are limitations to telehealth.

There are times when a patient needs a faceto-face appointment. Acute presentations, such as abdominal pain or severe bleeding require a doctor to assess the patient in person. Virtual or phone assessment is

obviously not suitable in these instances.

Please be mindful of this when booking.

To get the best out of your virtual appointment, whether that be phone or video, you need to prepare in advance. Try to limit background noise from other family members, TVs or animals in the house. Have your phone or computer ready before your appointment is due so that the doctor can easily contact you. Follow the advice you are given when making the booking.

Fun and games making lockdown bearable Families have been at their wits’ end when it comes to keeping children busy, engaged in schoolwork and active during five weeks of lockdown.

Last Level 4 saw many doing bear hunts on their walks, and the community got right behind that, placing teddy bears and other toys where they could be seen as children passed by.

This time there were not as many bears around – instead there were playful artworks and games devised, with many people putting in a lot of effort to raise everyone’s spirits. Thanks to all of you.

Here are some of the stories behind those projects.

“As well as putting some sunshine into other people’s days, it lifts our spirits as well,” Laura says.

She says the Critter Hunt was born as a boredom buster for the children, 9-yearold Boston, Millen, 6 and Kaia, 4.

“We came up with the concept together.

We had to learn how QR codes work, and plan what the theme would be, where the pictures would go and what to do about prizes.”

They used images from colouring pages online, which everyone helped colour in.

Pictures of native birds with QR codes were hidden in local parks and the first families to email a list of all the birds won little prizes.

Laura says as well as the 15 families who emailed entries, many more went hunting just for fun. The family then set up a new game, called Tag! You’re It! on Facebook.

Lightning lockdown Also taking her chalk to the streets was 23-year-old Casey Tuffley of Ōrewa. Her image of Lightning McQueen from the Cars movies created a lot of excitement from local children. Casey started doing street drawings during last year’s first lockdown.

“I live on a quiet street with a lot of young children, so I thought it would be cool for them and passers-by to see chalk drawings on the road,” she says. Drawing Lightning McQueen took Casey around five hours.

The response encouraged her to draw him in other streets for people to find.

The Ardin family, including mum Rachel, Oliver, 7, and Sadie, 4, started a search for fairy doors.

Doors connect families The Ardin family of Stanmore Bay created fairy doors for people to find.

Teacher Rachel says her son Oliver, aged 7, thought trees in D’Oyly Reserve looked as though they should have fairies living in them.

“I suggested we invite fairies to live in the reserve during lockdown by making homes for them,” Rachel says. “Oliver wanted to hide them in the reserve so other families could find them.”

Husband Tony got on board and cut out 17 wooden doors for Rachel, Oliver and Sadie, 4, as well as a couple of neighbouring children, to decorate.

Rachel then contacted her colleagues at Stanmore Bay School and finding the doors was added to the children’s home learning.

The response, from the school and wider community was far greater than Rachel had expected.

“I received so many messages from families saying how much it brightened their day, and got them out laughing and having fun as a family. My colleagues said children were inspired to write stories to the fairies, or even make their own fairy doors – some of which were added to the reserve for people to find.”

The family then came up with a pirate treasure hunt on Stanmore Bay beach, which also proved popular.

“Lockdowns can be stressful and we wanted to ease the stress even if it was just for an hour. My children really enjoyed it too.

Oliver said he liked hiding the doors, but the best part was watching other children find them. If there is anything we can teach our children during these lockdowns, it is kindness and that there is always a way to reach out and connect with others.” www.localmatters.co.nz

New burnout book providing tools for recovery

Katie Hills describes her first few weeks as Principal of Dairy Flat School as “a baptism of fire”.

She was only three weeks into the role when the Level 4 lockdown began.

“I’ve been a Principal in lockdown longer than not,” she says. “It’s been challenging because relationships are so important in any community and all of that has been put on hold, or on Zoom, which is tricky for all of us.”

She says it has been good to see online learning swing into action. She believes a combination of technology and the environment/learning outside the classroom is critical to preparing children

to be global citizens.

A teacher with more than 25 years’ experience, Katie was the former Deputy Principal of Torbay School.

She says in some ways her new role is like coming home – she was a teacher at Dairy Flat School around 18 years ago, and her two oldest children both went there.

“We did Ag Day and all those other things that the school is known for,” she says.

“Being a little country school with such large surrounding urban areas is special and we want to hold onto that as the area grows.”

Katie takes over from Debbie Marshall, who resigned in April after 14 years at the head of the school.

After more than six weeks in lockdown, and countless people feeling burned out and devoid of energy, a Waiwera author’s new book might be just what the doctor ordered.

Burnout and the Mobilisation of Energy by Annamaria Garden describes exactly what burnout is – and what it is not – and aims to help people and organisations get out of it, stay out of it and reactivate their energy.

Annamaria says the book comes from 40 years of her own experience of burnout, together with her PhD research, consulting work and clinical interviews in London and the US. “An awful lot I gathered from consulting in London with people in high pressure jobs, which inspired me to write about what I know,” she says. “I figured I knew quite a bit about burnout that would help people.”

She says burnout is not depression, stress, depersonalisation or anxiety – at its simplest, it is an extreme form of energy depletion which ususally results from people putting something, ususally work, as top priority and ahead of their own needs.

Solutions can include not defining yourself by your work, taking plenty of physical breaks, ignoring your mobile for long periods and maintaining leisure and a private life.

different individuals and organisations to illustrate the effects of burnout and the methods needed to kick old, unhealthy habits.

Annamaria moved to Waiwera five years ago, having worked as an economist in the NZ and UK Treasuries and as an organisational and business consultant.

She has written four previous books on organisations, one on burnout and a biography of her aviator father, Oscar Garden. She now works part-time in a local mental health facility.

“After my career, I wanted to do something completely different,” she says. “It’s fabulous.

We work with a wide range of people, some of whom need a great deal of care.”

Clues to survey findings One of the joys of living near Shakespear Regional Park is that some of the increasing numbers of native birds begin to overflow into surrounding areas.

begin to be noticed about seven years after predator removal and are possibly linked to competition from increasing numbers of endemics.

The fortunate residents of Shakespear and Everard Roads will have benefited most, but over the last month, and after eight years of hopeful watching, a bellbird/korimako has been a welcome visitor to our Matakatia garden.

Skinks and geckos probably also benefit, but a lack of data makes it difficult to estimate by how much.

This is the time of year when the annual bird survey is carried out at Shakespear.

Members of the survey team follow fixed counting routes, which include bush areas and paddocks. The aim is to find out how the mix of species and the numbers of each have changed since 2011, when the pestproof fence was completed, and the poison drop took place.

We don’t yet have an analysis of that data but a recently published study by Rachelle Binny, from Manaaki Whenua-Landcare Research, and her colleagues, which includes data from Shakespear and Tawharanui Regional Parks, gives clues about what to expect.

It will be no surprise that excluding mammalian predators from native forests benefits native plants and animals. But some of the effects may not be so obvious. Birds that benefit most, such as saddleback/tīeke, belong to families containing only endemic species, while birds from families where only some species are endemic, such as bellbirds and tomtit/miromiro, benefit less. It is believed that endemic species have evolved traits – such as cavity-nesting, reduced capacity for flight, and larger size – that make them more at risk from introduced predators.

Native (but non-endemic) species, such as silvereye/tauhou, tend to decline – as do non-native introduced species, such as chaffinch/pahirini. Decreases in non-natives

Removal of possums and other browsing mammals helps restore native forests.

There’s an additional benefit when the native animals recover, as they help with pollination and seed dispersal.

Mouse numbers at Shakespear have grown rapidly since their predators were removed, and this has negative impacts, especially on the insects and other invertebrates that are part of their diet. Shortly after the pest removal at Tawharanui the mouse density there reached the highest levels recorded on the NZ mainland.

At Tawharanui, tūī and bellbird numbers have increased dramatically since 2004 while saddleback, whitehead/pōpokotea and robin/toutouwai have increased at a lesser rate. Fantail/pīwakawaka numbers didn’t change much but silvereye and grey warbler/riroriro declined. It is likely that the changes at Shakespear will be slightly different as they are dependent on many site-specific conditions.

Buzz on backyard beehive rules

Currently no Auckland Council approval is required to keep more than two beehives in an urban backyard – however that is under review. This month Council put small changes to its Animal Management bylaw before the Hibiscus & Bays Local Board for feedback. It includes a proposal that urban residents should have to get Council approval to keep more than two standard beehives if their land area is less than 2000sqm. Only 10 people from this local board area provided feedback on the proposals during public consultation, and most of those opposed to the changes do not want the rules around beehives tightened. However, local board members asked Council to tighten the rules even more, based on concerns about the impact of beekeeping on the general public – including bee poo on house windows. The local board recommended that even one urban beehive should need approval and that there should be a suitable minimum distance between beehives and the property boundary “to avoid adverse effects on neighbouring properties and people, including those using Council reserves and walkways”. Council will make a decision on the proposed changes in November. www.localmatters.co.nz

Delta postpones special summer games The Special Olympics NZ board has been forced to postpone its National Summer Games, which were to be held in Hamilton in early December.

The games, which are for athletes with intellectual disabilities, will now be held next year.

The news has disappointed local teams who were well into their preparations. Two teams of 10 Pin Bowlers, two aquatics competitors and one equestrian were to take part.

Coach Kathy Woomack, whose daughter Jessica is in a bowling team, says while they are gutted to have the event postponed to 2022, the delay will allow them to improve their skills with more training time.

“One silver lining is that perhaps a few

more athletes can qualify so we can take a few more next year,” she says.

In making the difficult decision, the Special Olympics NZ board stressed that the wellbeing of the athletes and volunteers was key. It was also important for clubs throughout the country to be able to participate and that preparation for all was on a level playing field. That was not possible unless NZ was at Level 1.

“Delta has been a game changer. The higher level of infection, requirement for masks, and long tail all create greater uncertainty. We know that hugs and high fives are big part of engaging with our athletes and social distancing would be totally impossible to manage,” the board’s release to athletes says.

Bowls aimed at youth audience Bowls Ōrewa is reaching out to local colleges and youth organisations to introduce the sport to a younger audience.

The organisation’s newly appointed youth development officer, Kerry Greenhalgh, says the initiative will include a six-week course that covers the basics of bowling, as well as fun activities.

It is set to commence on October 27.

“Bowls is thought of as an older person’s pastime, however over the past four or five years this has changed dramatically,” Kerry says. “There are more younger adults participating than ever before – different

versions of the traditional bowling format, such as the shorter Bowls 3 Five, appeal to youth so it seems like a good time to promote our sport to young people.”

He says Bowls Ōrewa’s covered roof means the game can be played all year round making it more accessible to more people.

“Our initial intention is to make it a fun and enjoyable experience for 14-18-yearolds and then look to guide and nurture those who may want to get more serious.”

Aged care access investigated

Consumer NZ has asked the Commerce Commission to investigate the claims made by retirement villages about their aged care/rest home facilities. These are the facilities provided if a resident is no longer able to live independently. Consumer says villages market these as if that level of care is guaranteed, but that’s often not the case. Contracts reviewed by Consumer found that typically, while residents may be given priority for access to care beds, no assurances are given. This could lead to a scenario where, if a care bed were not available, the resident would have to leave the village. Consumer asked the Commission to investigate the aged care claims under the Fair Trading Act. Last year when it surveyed village residents, 50 percent of respondents said access to aged care services was a key factor in their decision to move into a village.

Tee off for charity ...

Local charity Youth In Transition is organising its second Golf Fore Life Charity Tournament and is looking for teams and sponsors to join them for a fun day on the green at Gulf Harbour Country Club.

The event is scheduled to take place on October 28, if Auckland is in Alert Level 1,but also has a backup date available.

Teams of three can sign up for the charity tournament, which involves playing 18 holes, with on-course activities and competitions. A pre-game barbecue and post-game buffet are included in the entry fee of $595 per team.

An auction follows, with signed sports items including All Blacks jerseys, and Ryan Fox gloves and cap, plus a day’s fishing charter for four and an overnight stay for four at

Wairakei Golf Course & Sanctuary.

Youth In Transition has been very successful at supporting young people in the area since 2014.

Caitlin Watson is helping to organise the event. She says the demand for Youth in Transition’s mental health services is always high, but never higher than now, with young people finding the lockdowns and restrictions particularly challenging.

“They have reached a point where they are having to turn many young people away due to a lack of resources,” she says.

The organisation is also looking for sponsors for the golf tournament.

Trust active in the community

A community trust that was set up at the end of last year is already providing assistance through a range of programmes. The Coast Community Trust, affiliated with Coast Vineyard Church, also works with other organisations. Community worker for the Trust, Caitlin Watson introduced its services at a local board Community Forum this month.

The Trust provides assistance through its Coast Compassion Fund, offers a budget service, family support, youth mentoring and self-worth courses and also works with Love Soup to provide free community meals. Plans include a low cost babysitting service for low income solo parents and basketball as a way of engaging youth.

Library hours alter

Council has made the tiniest of changes to the opening hours of Ōrewa and Whangaparāoa libraries. The changes are designed “to better reflect customer usage patterns”. The libraries will open on weekdays from 9am-5pm (instead of 9.30am-5.30pm) and on the weekend, 9.30am-3.30pm (instead of 10am-4pm). Staff numbers and levels of service are unchanged.

Council hopes to bring the new hours into force next month.

Business AGM deferred

Due to Covid Level 4 lockdown and Government regulations, Destination Ōrewa Beach has deferred its annual meeting until Wednesday, October 20. The annual meeting is open to all fully paid up members of the business association. The meeting will now be held at its offices, 350 Hibiscus Coast Highway (next to Bolliwood) at 5.30pm. Tired of no sleep?

There is no denying that for most of us, lock down is pretty stressful. That stress shows up in different ways for everybody. Some people get anxious, others get headaches, many have digestive issues and some of us have problems sleeping. Have you ever just lay there at night wondering if sleep will ever come? Or woken in the middle of the night and find yourself simply unable to get back to sleep? You are not alone. Research indicates that one quarter of adults in NZ suffer from chronic sleep problems and at the moment there are more people having trouble sleeping than ever.

Sleep is very important for your health. Lack of sleep has been shown to increase your risk of high blood pressure, heart attacks, decrease your immune system as well as possibly causing increased anxiety and depression.

If you are dieting, getting more sleep can even help you to lose more weight!

Many of us get distressed when we cannot get our 8 hours beauty sleep, but the fact is that different people need different amounts of sleep. Some people function well and are not tired during the day with just 3-4 hours’ sleep a night. To need 6-8 hours per night is average. Also, the amount of sleep you need through your life changes. For instance as you become older, it is normal to sleep less. Regardless of how many hours you sleep, what is important is that the amount of sleep that you get is right for you, and you feel refreshed and not sleepy during the daytime.

So, what can you do to help get to sleep? You could try a nutritional supplement. While more research needs to be done, studies indicate that magnesium may be helpful in providing a better night’s rest. However not all magnesium was created equal. Magnesium oxide, for example, will not help with sleep and can actually give you diarrhoea. So choosing the right type of magnesium is key. There are also other nutritional supplements that are thought to aid sleep which are worth trying.

The word insomnia actually covers a raft of various types of sleep problems - difficulty in getting to sleep, difficulty staying asleep, waking early or a poor quality of sleep. There are many causes of sleep problems ranging from medical or emotional reasons through to unhelpful sleep environs or routines.

A great way to a better sleep is to identify the cause of your sleep problem is by starting a sleep diary. Keep a general record of your sleep patterns. Not exact minutes slept, as this can exacerbate the problem. Note factors such as caffeine, water and alcohol intake, exercise patterns and what you do before you go to bed.

Using this information as a guide a health professional will be able to help to determine why you are suffering from a sleep problem and find a solution for you. You may discover a pattern yourself. Many solutions are simple like winding down before bedtime, avoiding certain foods and drinks, and even a bedtime routine can help.

Greg Shaw gives running 100 percent, and this summer he’s doing a coastal ultra marathon for Hospice.

Running a 50km ultra marathon is a big challenge for anyone – particularly if, like Greg Shaw of Ōrewa, you are 67 years old and your training is hampered by an ongoing chest infection.

The consultant engineer is one of 30 people who have so far signed up to take part in the one-off 50km course of this year’s Coastal Challenge in February.

Total Sport has run the event on courses around the coastline of the Hibiscus Coast and North Shore since 2003, raising more than $225,000 for hospice.

Total Sport’s Mark Fordham says the number 50 is the theme for next year’s 20th anniversary event – he is hoping $50,000 can be raised for hospice from the 50km ultra marathon.

The ultra marathon starts in Waiwera and follows the coast to Manly, then across the peninsula to Arkles Bay. There the runners join the 33km Full Monty course from Arkles to Devonport.

Greg says he came relatively late to running, but he does nothing by halves and has taken on some of the big ones – the Speights Coast to Coast, Taupo Marathon, Auckland Marathon and the Tarawera Trail Marathon. It’s five years since he last ran in the Coastal Challenge (33km course), finishing 8th overall.

It’s clear that he particularly likes off road and coastal running.

“You have to think about every step you take because of what’s underfoot – seaweed,

sharp rocks, oyster shells,” Greg says. “You can be up to your waist in water, or on energy-sapping soft sand. All that takes your mind off the physical effort. And the scenery is quite fantastic because often you are the only person on that stretch of coastline.”

He expects to be the oldest doing the 50km, and says training has been hard as he’s coming from “a zero fitness base” due to chest and sinus infections.

“I’m sticking to my training schedule, but my lungs are crap and I’m unfit. But I figure if I set a goal, then I’ll dig deep to achieve it. I’m a tough old bastard!”

Coast Youth Community Trust (CYC) director Josh Sanford is very aware of the value of exercise in relieving stress and pressures for the young people that the organisation works with. “The blood flow, energy levels, endorphins and personal satisfaction all play a part in helping mental health and wellbeing,” Josh says. “I wanted to promote these benefits and realised that I wasn’t even living it myself!” So, Josh signed up for the Rodney Coast Challenge – an event that involves a 10km run, 55km cycle (25km off road) as well as an 8km paddle as competitors head from Muriwai Beach to Wenderholm. At the same time, he is raising funds for CYC. “I thought this would be a great opportunity to raise awareness, engage in it myself and raise funds to help our work in the community.” This will be Josh’s first multisport event, and he says he’s up for the challenge, while slightly nervous. “Level 4 lockdown hasn’t helped with training for an 8km paddle. I haven’t paddled much before – the most I’ve ever done would be a few hundred metres – but I’m up for it!” He hopes to raise $10,000, which will help CYC employ another youth worker.
