Government funding of Penlink is in place, however the delay in getting started and the vastly increased costs (HM April 21) have angered supporters of the project.

Construction of the road and bridge linking Whangaparāoa Peninsula with the northern motorway at Redvale was to begin towards the end of this year.

However, last week, following pressure from Hibiscus Matters, Waka Kotahi/NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) confirmed that the new expected date for the start of construction is the end of next year.

NZTA’s infrastructure delivery national manager, Andy Thackwray, told the paper the 12 month delay is because of Covid-19, the time needed to develop plans for delivery, the procurement process, detailed design work and to allow for public feedback on the draft design.

He puts the cost rise – from $411m to $830m – down to factors such as increased property prices and construction costs and meeting improved road standards.

A total of $167m has been allowed for contingencies, to protect the environment and cope with risks.

“The footprint spans a unique landscape and waterway which presents risks,” Thackwray says. “The land has a wide range of highly valued flora and fauna and, in places, poor ground conditions. So, there are numerous risks from these complexities and challenges which could potentially add significant cost.”

In addition, the original Auckland Transport (AT) design included a partial cycleway between Whangaparāoa Rd and Stillwater, whereas the revised scope includes a full shared-use path from East Coast Rd to Whangaparāoa Rd. None of that washes with Janet Fitzgerald.

A jab in a new direction Covid has changed our lives in many ways. Groundswell NZ is calling for a halt to all environmental regulations including freshwater, indigenous biodiversity/SNAs, climate change and high country legislation, and demands that the ute tax be removed.

Smith said if no significant moves have been made by Government to address these concerns by August 16, there will be further action, and again it will be nationwide. He says since the protest, councils have made moves regarding the SNAs, which he sees as a positive sign.

Farmers drive point home in Ōrewa There wasn’t an electric vehicle in sight in Ōrewa on Friday, July 16 as hundreds of farmers, producers and tradies from Rodney and rural parts of the Hibiscus Coast came together to protest against Government policies.

The protesters quickly filled Ōrewa Reserve, near the surf club, arriving around 1pm in their work vehicles – utes, vans and trucks. Around 30 tractors were also driven in for the protest.

Organised by Groundswell NZ, the Ōrewa Howl of Protest echoed others happening around the country this afternoon, sparked by the tax on utility vehicles, as well as issues such as freshwater policy, the taking of farmland for significant natural areas (SNAs) and climate change policies.

Supporters waved placards with slogans such as ‘No Farmers No Food’, as well as a number aimed at Jacinda Ardern and Labour.

Protestors spoke of being sick of an authoritarian approach and too many rules and regulations impacting farming. They said they were encouraged by support they got in Ōrewa, which included people

A change in the ownership of Gulf Harbour Country Club (GHCC) last week is causing concern among some members as well as Councillor Wayne Walker who has already kicked off a “save the golf club” campaign.

Although a source within the club confirmed a sale has taken place, the name of the new owner remains under wraps, for now.

Rumours are rife within the membership as they wait to be fully informed by management.

However, Cr Walker says he has heard enough to be afraid that the golf course, or parts of it, could be developed into residential housing.

Having such a significant green space is seen as a bonus for all residents of Gulf Harbour, not only golfers. With that in mind, an encumbrance put on the title in 2006 was designed to see the land remain as a golf course and country club.

However, Cr Walker points out that although this carries weight, it is not bulletproof because it is between the landowner and Auckland Council. He says there is the potential for the landowner to apply to Council to change the zoning to allow development. If that were granted, it could compromise the encumbrance as a safeguard.

A Land Information NZ spokesperson also confirms that Council has the power to discharge the encumbrance and free up the land for development and it’s also possible for the encumbrance to be challenged through the courts.

“The Unitary Plan removed the cap on the number of houses that can be built in Gulf Harbour, leaving the way open to further development,” Cr Walker says. “The cap was put in place because of infrastructure constraints, and those constraints still exist.”

The former owner of GHCC was Long River Investments Corporation, sole director Gregory Olliver – the company has owned the Country Club since 2013.

As soon as details of the new owner emerge they will be made public in this paper.

Council puts coastal work up priority list The sight of contractors abseiling down the cliff at Army Bay recently, while a set of stairs was lowered carefully into position, was a dramatic example of what Auckland Council calls “coastal renewal works”.

Replacing damaged stairs at Army Bay and installing 300sqm of mesh as protection from future rock falls and landslips, cost $315,000 and was completed by specialists Earth Stability last week. Relocating lizards from

the site and replanting was also included.

Project manager Brad Holm says adding to the complexities of a 20m plus, difficultto-access cliff, was poor weather, including a storm that further damaged the old stairs.

Obtaining construction materials was also a headache.

The structure was secured in place, with stronger stainless steel brackets at the base to combat wave action.

With the stairs safely installed, Council

has turned its focus to other coastal areas, including Ōrewa Reserve, where it is beginning the process of looking at coastal management options (see story, this page).

Recently, it also approved a programme that includes more than $700,000-worth of local coastal renewal work, to take place over the next three years (see box below).

Ōrewa Reserve under coastal planning microscope Auckland Council is determined not to repeat the experience it had in getting consent to build a seawall on Ōrewa Beach (from Kohu to Marine View), as it begins investigating options for coastal protection by Ōrewa Reserve.

That consent, including lengthy court action, is thought to have cost ratepayers more than $2.1m. The wall itself may cost around $14m and currently it is hoped to begin work within three years (HM June 16).

Speaking to the Hibiscus and Bays Local Board at its meeting on July 15, parks advisor Jeff Lyford indicated that Council is leaving no stone unturned to prevent a repeat of that cost and complexity.

Lyford presented members with the first step – the Ōrewa Reserve Service Assessment report, analysing how the community uses the beach. The report was funded by the local board, at a cost of $4000 and involved Council watching the reserve very closely for six days in April, 2019.

It included cameras recording visitor numbers and movements, aerial photos using drones, observations by parks services graduates over 24 hours and a visitor survey

with more than 400 responses.

As a result of the findings, the local board has agreed that priorities for the reserve’s long term management include: enhancing opportunities for recreational experiences on an extended dry beach; improving access to the beach along the reserve, retaining play options for children and basketball/ beach volleyball; enhancing opportunities for north/south walking and cycling.

The report is intended to assist with the next steps in coastal management planning.

At the same time, a report on the coastal hazard susceptibility on the reserve was updated, which confirmed areas considered at risk from sea level rise and erosion in 2080 and 2130 (see image above).

In happier times – Men’s Shed members share a cuppa by the garage that was robbed twice last month.

THEFT shines light on security needs A garage used for storage by the charity Hibiscus Men’s Shed was broken into twice recently and everything inside was taken.

The first break-in saw burglars use a crowbar to break into the garage, and remove a black Ecoflow sewage pump control box and all the cabling. Ōrewa Police say the theft occurred between Friday July 9 and Monday July 12.

The stolen item is key to the drainage system that was about to be laid at the Men’s Shed’s new building.

On Thursday, July 22 in broad daylight, thieves broke in again and removed the remaining items – 30m of copper cable, a radial arm saw and bench and two stormwater sumps that had been destined for the carpark.

“They must have had a truck to take the saw bench away,” Maurice says. “We had

replaced the lock, but it had been cut open.”

Both the garage, and the newly constructed large Men’s Shed are located in Silverdale, on the old bowling greens near the rugby club.

Hibiscus Men’s Shed Trust chair Maurice Browning says although insurance covers the cost, the break-in has them worried about security at the newly built shed.

He says they are getting a quote for CCTV and flood lighting but the estimated cost of $10,000 is well beyond their reach and applying for grants takes time with no guarantee of success.

Switched on apprentices compete

The bid to find New Zealand’s top electrical apprentice is on, with the first of 12 regional rounds of the Master Electricians Apprentice of the Year Challenge kicking off in Invercargill last month. This preliminary round wraps up in Auckland on September 10. Organisers say the level of interest is the highest ever with 220 apprentices signing on. Competitors choose either the industrial or commercial/domestic division. The focus is on the practical, with competitors in regional rounds completing four one-hour modules reflecting issues an apprentice might face on the job, such as checking a motor for faults or wiring a switchboard.

The top five from each region go on to the finals in Christchurch in October.

Hunt on for giant kōkopu Recent DNA sampling of water from Nukumea Stream in Ōrewa showed a lot of fish life, as well as birds and even rats passing through.

However, scientists were surprised that it did not pick up any DNA of giant kōkopu – a threatened species previously released in large numbers into the stream.

The sampling was undertaken by the environmental group Whitebait Connection, which is supported by the Hibiscus and Bays Local Board to work with schools in protecting and restoring freshwater environments.

Auckland programme coordinator, Sarah Dimitrijevic, says as it was a single sample, the results are only a guide.

She was happy to see that another threatened species, inanga, are present.

“We were concerned about inanga numbers as we had worked to restore their spawning habitat. In 2019 we had a number of sediment pollution events and last year surveying was very limited, so it was nice to see that our planting had developed to allow fish to lay eggs,” she says. “On the other hand there were plenty of pests found – including the mosquito fish, which is a significant problem in poor quality water.

Improving water quality gives native fish a chance to out-compete these.”

Sediment continues to affect the stream and Sarah says water clarity has dropped this year due to sediment whenever there’s heavy rain. “Part of that is a natural process, but more development will increase the problem. It is imperative that any new development adheres to best practice sediment management.”

In late March 2019, 1000 giant kōkopu were released in the stream in a project led

by NIWA. However, Sarah says about a week after the release there was a massive sediment deluge (HM April 17, 2019).

“We did find some after that, but not many,” Sarah says. “Certainly not all of them would be expected to survive, regardless, but heavy sediment is particularly detrimental to certain native fish including kōkopu.”

The hunt is now on to find live giant kōkopu.

A full fish survey will be undertaken in mid-August, including placing two large nets and up to 10 smaller ones over 200m of the stream. Sarah says the traps are checked regularly and it is important that the public leaves them alone.

Time flies when you’re having fun With the local board term now more than halfway through, I have realised just how quickly time goes when you’re kept busy with all the enquiries we get from ratepayers.

It’s an awesome feeling when issues can be heard and hopefully fixed or brought to the attention of Auckland Council staff to be investigated.

Not every issue can be solved, as it could be out of our jurisdiction, but we certainly have advocated to the Auckland Council as a local board to have our voice heard.

In one of the cases I was incredibly pleased that we were able to secure $100,000 for the next three years for the Hibiscus Coast Youth Centre in Ōrewa.

Over the past 21 months I have become aware of just how many charities there are in our community and the outstanding work that so many volunteers are doing, giving their time and energy to help others.

Recently we had a volunteer awards evening at the Estuary Arts Centre to honour many people for their most amazing efforts in the different community charities (HM July 14). It

One of the projects that I am working on, in association with our local Community Patrols and the Police, is called ‘Secure Hibiscus & Bays’. This is a project to set up CCTV cameras in our townships throughout the local board area to ensure that there is an element of safety for everyone. Whether it be a stolen car, vandalism, burglary or to track down vehicles, these cameras will be linked to each other, and the Police can tap into the footage to boost a more efficient service.

Sign off on replacements

After agreeing to replace directional signs between Silverdale St and Millwater Parkway last December, at the request of the Hibiscus and Bays Local Board, Auckland Transport (AT) recently “tidied up” the existing signs. An AT spokesperson says it did so in response to complaints about the condition of the signs. The signs should be replaced later this year, budget permitting, to read ‘Silverdale’, without the words ‘Centre’ or ‘Village’. As many as 10 signs need to be altered – the cost is yet to be made public.

YourOpinion Bike tax needed

I think the editor’s note on Danny Donovan’s letter (HM July 1) missed the point. Yes cyclists who have cars do pay registration and fuel tax (if the car is petrol). This is for the car or motorcycle.

They do not pay any tax for their bicycle.

They essentially get free cycleways at the expense of the motorist. No motorists, no bridge. If you haven’t noticed, Auckland geography and climate are not suitable for push bikes. I can count the number of people on one hand going to work on bicycles in the morning.

However, proponents of active transport argue that the more bikes on the road, especially commuting, the greater the reduction in congestion – which surely is a plus for everyone, especially motorists. Getting more people out of cars and onto bikes means providing safe cycleways or designated lanes that keep vehicles and bikes well apart. There is also an environmental benefit for all of us if more people use active transport, from things such as less exhaust fumes. The taxes are for roading infrastructure that enables more efficient transportation (of whatever kind) for all road users.

Boulevard blues

I hope the boffins designing the extensions to Ōrewa Boulevard (‘Costs approach $2m’, HM July 14) have noted the fate and failing of the first section. They forgot about the wind blown sand and installed an underpath drainage network that was impossible to clean after the very first easterly blow, and remains blocked to this day. Please allow for the moving sand we see after every big wind, and avoid another expensive disaster.

Crossing option?

Regarding the new pedestrian crossing with controlled lights being installed on the highway at the southern end of Ōrewa.

With the cycleway on one side of the road and the beach on the other there is definitely a need for a safe crossing there. Considering that it is also a busy section of highway, traffic will have to stop for longer periods and more frequently when the new crossing is operational. Was there any thought of

building the pedestrian crossing under the existing bridge? Of course a pathway under the bridge would cost much more than across the road’s surface but without the need to stop traffic and greater safety it might have been a better option.

Pass memories on

I refer to your Final Years feature (HM July 14). Something else that people may consider in their final years is leaving their history to their children and grandchildren.

Many New Zealanders were not born in this country and their childhoods could hardly be more different from those that our children are experiencing. Some of us can remember when grainy 12-inch black and white televisions were new and exciting, coal for the fire was delivered in 1cwt sacks from a horse drawn cart, and can anyone who experienced it ever forget the dentist’s drill driven by that long band around all of those pulley wheels? Hand written, typed on a computer or videoed, they don’t have to be great literary works but I think they are well worth recording.

Parking conundrum

Is it just me – or are others thinking how crazy this Brightside Rd/Ozone Rd development (HM July 1) is? Let’s talk parking! There are 57 apartments – most households I know have more than one car, so at the least there could be 114 cars, yet there are 16 proposed car parks. So please tell me where these people are going to park?

Holiday Rd and Ozone Rd are already used for the overflow parking for New World and associated businesses. Brightside Rd is busy and parking would cause havoc. Also, Ozone Rd is the entrance for deliveries for New World, there are some huge trucks that deliver on a daily basis so parking there won’t work. Please don’t try and tell me these people will be riding bikes to work – Brightside Road is a big slope. Of course they are all going to catch the bus!

Yeah, right. Ozone Ltd, has requested that the change to its consent be granted without

public notification. Perhaps they might like to come and live in these apartments and have to park 2km away.

The story referred to was about an application to Council to amend a resource consent, so nothing is definite until Council approves it. We sought comment from Ozone Ltd director Colin Craig, who said: “It is a work in progress.

Car parking is not a Council requirement so they won’t be pushing for that, however I want more car parking myself so am trying to achieve that with the designers now.”

In it together

On some things, I think the farmers are justified to protest. However, characterising people who buy an EV using the subsidy as “latte drinking Ponsonby dwellers”, as the Mayor of Westland did, is not helpful. It would pay for dairy farmers to remember that latte is made with their milk, and give their urban customers more credit. We are all in this climate crisis together and must all play our part – including moving away from oil. If we don’t, the climate that makes farming as good as it is in NZ will be a thing of the past – giving new meaning to the statement ‘No Farmers – No Food’.

Town ute dinosaurs

I was in Takapuna town centre recently and couldn’t help but notice the amount of 4WDs and utes – they were everywhere.

While I feel for farmers and others who protested in Ōrewa, who need that kind of vehicle, I think suburbanites using them is crazy. I put together a small poem, with a nod towards a kids book called I thought I saw a Dinosaur...

Great that you were there to cover the tractor protest. Did you notice the Voices for Freedom people? They are against government Covid measures and the vaccine. They had the ‘Toot for Freedom’ signs. They are entitled to their views of course, but I would be interested to know if the protest organisers invited them to join?

Meg MacDonald, Warkworth Editor’s note: We put this question to Mick Smith of Groundswell, organiser of the Ōrewa protest. He says Voices for Freedom contacted him before the protest, so he knew they would be there. “I don’t know who Voices for Freedom are, but it was a public place and I was happy for anyone to come along. It wasn’t an endorsement of their views and we gave no speaking rights,” he says. “The Communist League was also there, but we didn’t know they were coming beforehand. We invited members from every political party - the more apolitical we can be, the better.”

Guides dumped on

The Girl Guide Den in Centreway Road, Ōrewa is home to Pippins (5-6 year olds), Brownies (7-9 year olds), Guides (9-13 year olds) and Rangers (13-17 year olds).

Recently we have been having a big cleanup of the den and have been busy painting the outside and generally bringing it up to scratch. We have had to pay to have rubbish removed that someone has thoughtlessly and selfishly dumped in the Den’s gardens.

On July 17 yet more rubbish appeared including an old chair just dumped on the driveway. Girl Guiding is a charity and funds raised go to improving the lives and goals of young girls. Paying to have rubbish removed takes money away from these girls. It’s a disgrace that someone should think it’s ok to simply dump their junk and rubbish onto others. It’s really disheartening to see such selfishness.

It took determination, perseverance, garden rakes and the help of around 20 locals for artist Tony Gillies to complete two huge messages in the sand of Ōrewa Beach.

Cold winds and showers did not deter the team from creating the words Leave Only Footprints, and Listen to the Children, working from 11am-4pm on Sunday, July 11. A trail of giant 2.5m footprints was also raked into the sand. Tony has been making beach art for three years, using the work to spread messages of goodwill. The weather was unsuitable to launch a drone, so the photos had to be taken from the beach.

The brief about Rotary helping out I Got Your Backpack (IGYBP) on page 24 of your July 1 edition caught the eye of local lady Tiffany (who does not want her surname published). She got in touch with the Rotary Club of Ōrewa-Millwater and delivered a quantity of backpacks – including some pre-stuffed with useful things – plus a large box of new socks, gloves and other items.

She told us, “I Got Your Back Pack is a wonderful charity that helps women and children who have, for whatever reason, had to leave their homes in a hurry. That story in Hibiscus Matters touched my heart and I am just so happy to be able to help.”

Fire repairs force shops to shut again Two popular Ōrewa businesses are facing yet more uncertainty as they are once again forced to close as a result of a major fire in the roof above their shops last October.

Ōrewa Bakery and The Biltong & Braai Shop, at 8 Moana Avenue, shut their doors to customers on July 18 and will not be able to reopen until extensive structural repairs have been completed – which is unlikely to be until late November.

The latest closure comes exactly a year after Biltong & Braai first opened to sell handmade sausages, meats and South African barbecue goods. However, just as owner Conrad Muller and manager Semona Cornelesen were getting established, they and their neighbours, bakers Ty and Anna Lim, were hit with a two-week Covid lockdown, followed by the devastating roof fire on October 20 that closed them again until the end of January.

While the traders always knew that more extensive repairs and building works were inevitable, the latest closure is still a huge blow to both businesses.

Bakery owner Ty Lim says he will try to stay in business and reopen the award-winning shop, but he can’t be certain at present.

“I try to ask them to do the job quicker, and they say they will try, but we just have to wait,” he says. “It’s very difficult, we just keep watching.”

Ty is currently looking for bakery work, but is struggling to find a job. He says people are reluctant to take him on in a non-permanent role.

“I’ve got to get a temporary job, but people want a full-time, long-term baker,” he says.

He adds that for now, he and Anna are spending more time with their son and

“We’re still making sausages at a commercial kitchen in Silverdale and we have our website, we just don’t have a shop front,” Semona says. “It’s very worrying.

Everything was getting back to normal after the fire, and now it’s terrible.”

However, she and Conrad are refusing to give up, despite the rollercoaster of openings and closures ,and all the costs that entails.

“Our insurance said they can’t pay out twice on the same claim, and it costs money to get up and running again,” she says. “But we will be back. We can’t go through everything and not come back. All our customers have said they will support us.”

Local pie-makers once again featured in the annual Bakels NZ Supreme Pie Awards, which were handed out to nationwide winners last week. More than 5000 pies were entered in 12 categories.

Among the judges was NZ chef Peter Gordon. Describing the awards as “the Oscars of NZ’s baking industry”, Bakels managing director Brent Kersel says it was especially exciting to be holding them, as many bakeries were badly affected by Covid-19 lockdowns. Award-winning pies attract customers and boost sales.

ater tank owners are now able to clean their tank and retain their water, thanks to an innovative new service.

Safe H2O Auckland chief executive Hamish Grey has brought his country-first water tank cleaning technology to the Hibiscus Coast.

The Safe H2O mobile unit is equipped with state-of-the-art nano-filtration which filters out anything larger than 0.001 micron.

Sediment is vacuumed from the tank bottom and the remaining water is filtered, removing e-coli, giardia, lead, pesticides and other contaminants before being returned to the tank ready for use.

Fay has worked with cats all her life, including at rescues here and in Australia, and she is currently completing a vets’ assistant course.

“I want to help people with their pets,” she says. “All cats need regular grooming, but they’re all different, so I take my time with them and don’t rush them. They all get lots of treats and love.”

She says as well as offering grooming, she can help with more everyday needs to keep cats healthy and happy.

“Lots of people have trouble de-fleaing and worming their cats, and indoor cats need their claws clipped, as they don’t wear down,” she says. “I do a whole health check.”

Fay tailors her treatments to whatever clients want, from basic daycare up to a full cat pamper package that includes dematting, nail clipping, a trim and shave, bathing, drying and ear cleaning.

“A lot of it is understanding the individual animal – their personalities are different, their temperaments are different and their characteristics are different,” Fay says.

Retirement village underway Diggers have begun earthworks on a retirement village in north Ōrewa that has been five years in the making.

Ōrewa Sands Retirement Resort is the work of developer Coastal Properties.

The project was strongly opposed by neighbours in its early days, mainly on the grounds of the sensitivity of the site, near Nukumea Stream, Eaves’ Bush and historic Ōrewa House, as well as the proposed height and bulk of the buildings – up to five storeys and 120 units were originally planned.

That was in 2016, and several revisions later the consented village will contain 114 units in blocks that are three and four storeys above ground, with an underground carpark.

Auckland Council issued building consent for the first stage of the project in June. This includes a residential apartment block that includes facilities such as a swimming pool, men’s shed, hairdresser, doctor’s consulting room and nursing station.

Historic Rose Cottage, built in 1880, is on the site and this will be restored to original condition and used as a craft room and library.

Coastal Properties director, Brendan Coughlan, says that large steel piles have been driven as far as 26m into the soil to support the foundations.

“The building is designed to withstand a 1-in-500-year earthquake,” he says.

Gaining consent required considerable enhancement of Nukumea Stream, as well as building a boardwalk along it.

There are two further stages, which may include a care facility and hospital.

Coughlan aims to complete stage one by the summer of 2022 and put the 40 apartments in that block on the market in October.

The Theosophical Society of NZ sold its land in north Ōrewa to Coastal Properties. It is zoned Mixed Housing Urban under Council’s Unitary Plan.

Work has begun on Ōrewa Sands – the Hibiscus Coast’s eighth retirement village.

Real Estate Institute of NZ chief executive Jen Baird says house price rises continue to defy expectations.

“Buyers hoping for a bargain over winter might be disappointed,” she says.

• The most expensive suburb to buy a house on the Hibiscus Coast is Silverdale, with a median house price of $1,295,000.

• The most affordable is Stanmore Bay, where the median house price is $952,000.

• In April 2020, Gulf Harbour’s median

house price was $293,900. That grew to $842,700 in March last year – an average annual growth rate of 5.41 percent.

• In January 2020, Red Beach’s median house price was $279,400. That grew to $956,700 by March last year – an average annual growth rate of 6.27 percent.

• The number of residential properties sold in June across NZ increased by 6.2 percent compared to the same time last year (from 6913 to 7345) – the highest for a June month for five years.

Fewer totara views in Totara Views As sections get smaller, trees in parks and reserves become even more valuable to residents.

And it’s not often on the Coast that you get mature totara right next door. The Vesey and Collier families are among the Red Beach residents who felt lucky to have several totara, estimated to be around 50 years old, near their homes.

Both families speak of hearing morepork calling at night, being woken by tui and watching nesting kereru. The trees were one reason they moved into the area.

Last month, it was a shock when five of the 20m plus giants, on a privately owned section in Spyglass Street, were felled.

Not all the totara on the section were felled, but the ones removed were those closest to neighbouring properties.

Neighbours first knew of it when they heard chainsaws and the loud crack of trees falling to the ground.

“We would’ve liked to be consulted,” Rachelle Collier says.

“A lot of our privacy is gone – trimming the trees would have opened up sea views from that section. The morepork has gone.”

George Vesey says the felling may have improved views from the Spyglass Street section, but they ruined his.

“The trees were all healthy and held a lot of insect and bird life,” he says. “It has massively affected the landscape around our place and the wildlife has disappeared.”

The land is owned by VBC – Viana Building Contractors.

Its director, Osvaldir Viana of Ōrewa, says the trees, one of which was not healthy, were felled to bring in more sun. He says there is also an allergy issue for the person contracted to buy the property which could be affected by the trees.

“I apologise to the neighbours, and plan to erect a 1.8m fence on the walkway,” he says.

The site is currently being offered for sale as a house and land package under the headline “a blend of nature with luxury and sea views”.

What happened?

• In 2014, Auckland Council granted consent for Chuanglie International Developments to fell 32 protected ‘Notable’ totara (73 protected trees in total) on its land in Red Beach. This was strongly opposed by residents and Forest and Bird. A subdivision of 19 homes was created. • Around 25 totara were kept as part of the resource consent conditions, and protected by covenant. That protection no longer exists since the Resource Management Act was amended by the Government in 2015, although six totara (at other addresses in Spyglass Street) are protected on Council’s Notable Tree Schedule. • Totara on Seagate Reserve, part of the same remnant grove, are protected because they are on a public reserve.

Five mature totara were felled in Totara Views, Red Beach, angering neighbours.

Tougher tenancy rules could lead to fewer rentals While the idea of owning an investment property might be an attractive proposition in the current climate of low interest rates, it is not as easy as signing an agreement and collecting the rent.

The Residential Tenancies Act has been overhauled, with changes rolling out from August last year and continuing until at least 2024.

The changes include limiting rent increases to once every 12 months (previously six months), allowing tenants to make minor changes to the property, a requirement for landlords to provide fibre broadband at their own cost if requested, and the suppression of names and identifying details from published Tenancy Tribunal decisions.

Fixed-term tenancy rules have also changed.

Any tenancies signed on or after February 11 this year will convert to periodic tenancies at the end of the fixed term unless the parties agree otherwise, the tenant gives 28 days notice, or the landlord gives notice in accordance with the termination grounds for periodic tenancies.

Landlords will also not be able to end a periodic tenancy without cause by providing 90 days’ notice. New termination grounds are available to landlords under a periodic tenancy and the required notice periods will change.

The Healthy Homes standards, which became law in 2019, have also come in to force. From July 1, all private rentals must comply within 90 days of any new or renewed tenancy, with all private rentals complying by 1 July 2024.

The standards introduce specific and minimum standards for heating, insulation, ventilation, moisture and drainage, and draught-stopping in rental properties.

leader Nicole Banks says the heating rules make sense, but need refining.

“New homes that have a heat pump installed are failing on the grounds that the heating capacity of heat pumps does not meet the heating standard,” she says.

“I also know of a three-bedroomed open plan home with a mezzanine floor that has to install three heat pumps to meet the standards at a cost of $12,000. It doesn’t make sense – what family would run three heat pumps?

“There seems to be an assumption that all owners can afford this sort of expense, but that’s not the case.”

Nicole says the suppression of tenant details in tribunal decisions has also not been thought through.

She gives an example of a tenant who was taken to the tribunal after being issued with three anti-social notices in 90 days – playing

loud music, swearing, a domestic incident and verbally assaulting a neighbour. The tenancy was terminated as per the new laws and both the landlord and tenant sought name suppression. As the landlord was successful in their claim, suppression was granted but the tribunal also granted name

suppression to the tenant so that their ability to secure future rental accommodation was not hindered by the order.

In another case, the adjudicator suppressed the tenants identifying details despite the landlord being awarded nearly $3000 for

rubbish removal, garden work and several intentional incidences of damage. The damage included holes in walls, bedroom, lounge, dining and hall. The tenant did not attend the hearing but still had their details suppressed.

“This will make it particularly difficult for private landlords who perhaps don’t have the tools to be able to properly investigate a prospective tenant.”

Nicole says changes in fixed term tenancy standards means many homes will no longer be available to rent. She says Omaha is a prime example of where many people rented their holiday homes for most the year, just using it for a few weeks over summer.

“Under the new rules, if the tenants decide they don’t want to move out over summer, they can’t be forced out. The change is to try and protect tenants and give them some security, but the impact will be less houses for rent.”

Industrial park taking shape

There is strong demand for commercial properties from investors.

Business property bounces back Property prices, housing developments, new subdivisions – they’re all going up, in all directions and frankly, it’s hard to avoid them.

But what about commercial property – how are local shops, offices and cafes faring since Covid came to call last year?

Better than expected is the broad answer, but as with housing, much depends on the location.

Telos Group’s commercial director Mustan Bagasra says Silverdale is the current Coast hotspot, with a raft of new shops and cafes making it the new regional hub.

“Here, people can attract customers from Ōrewa, Whangaparāoa, Millwater and Milldale,” he says. “Now is the right time – you can see there’s so much happening all around, and more houses means more people and more foot traffic. It’s a natural progression.”

Meanwhile, he says Ōrewa is becoming more of a hospitality hub, despite the pressures of lockdowns and trying to find staff when borders are closed, as more

families continue to move out from the city.

“Local suburbs are becoming more prominent, firstly because more people are working from home post-Covid, and secondly the CBD being a real nightmare, with the city rail link and the traffic.”

Overall, commercial vacancies are at about 4 per cent, according to Mustan.

“There is still a lot of demand. More people are around wanting to spend money in local cafes and retail businesses,” he says.

“And there’s a demand for service industries as more people move in – lawyers, accountants, doctors, chiropractors, and so on.”

Mustan says that any new commercial or industrial properties that come up for sale are being snapped up by investors.

“They are moving money from residential property and banks into commercial,” he says. “There’s very little new stock on the Coast at the moment, whereas the leasing options are there because people are always upgrading and downgrading.”

There’s hardly a carpark to be had in the streets around Silverdale’s Highgate Business Park at the moment, as a flood of builders and tradies pile in daily to work on a raft of construction sites. Dominating the scene is the massive 11,000sqm Infratil computer data centre on Highgate Parkway, but there are also several other buildings going up around Emirali Road and Colin Chester Drive. Highgate sales manager Jonny Reid says the first industrial super-stage of the business park is now almost fully built-out, with Mitre 10 Mega set to occupy the last site on the south side of Colin Chester Drive. Next on the development list is master-planning for the final 15 hectare vacant block at the northern end of the park. “That is similarly zoned Business Light Industry, but also enables office, medical and educational activities and the possibility of a small town centre to service the working population and local community,” he says. Going, going, gone … auctioneer Ryan Steven is laying down his gavel at the end of the year.

Reflections on a rampant market

Real estate is all about the detail, in data and dress.

Ryan Steven appears to fit neatly into the mould of ‘successful young real estate agent’. He is sharp-suited, smartly coiffed and a smooth communicator.

But the Bayleys sales manager and auctioneer is preparing to lay down his gavel early next year and step back from the overheated north Auckland property market, in favour of a much simpler, quieter life.

“My partner and I live in our tiny house that we’ve built and lived in over the last two years,” Ryan says.

“It’s been a labour of love and we’ve been looking at simplifying our life.

“We’re taking it down to Raglan and I’m going to grow food, spend time with my family and aim for self-sufficiency.”

He’s been in the business for nine years, a period when the housing market has not only recovered from the GFC downturn,

but boomed so much that prices have skyrocketed to the point where owning property has become an impossible dream for many people.

The former Navy air traffic controller admits he can’t see a major about-turn anytime soon, not while demand continues to outstrip supply and cashed-up buyers, whether city dwellers seeking a quieter life or expats returning home due to Covid, continue to snap up homes as soon as they hit the market.

“All that generally happens is more or less restrictions on lending money, but they’re just tweaks,” he says.

With the exception of Mahurangi West, Puhoi and Waiwera, average house prices have risen throughout the Coast in the first six months of the year, compared to 2020, with Ōrewa and Gulf Harbour the real hotspots.

“Ōrewa has seen one of the biggest increases in average price, plus a massive drop in the number of days on the market,” Ryan says. “The northern suburbs have taken on a bit more of a corporate feel. Here, it’s a community and a coastal lifestyle. People have reflected what’s really important to them over the last year and a half, and they can justify the drive.”

However, there are signs that the tide is starting to turn and soaring prices might at least level out.

“I’m starting to notice there’s a bit more of a disparity between what people want to sell for and what people are prepared to pay,” Ryan says. “Buyers are digging in their heels a bit more.”

While he admits there is no magic bullet to make prices more affordable, Ryan says potential buyers can optimise their situation by doing some serious groundwork.

“They should be doing two months of market research, really getting to know what’s happening in the area they want to purchase. Get all the data – how fast homes sell, the price, features of the property, size of land, local schools, transport links.

“If they did all that, and went to six to eight open homes every weekend, they’d have more knowledge than most real estate agents. They’re so much more prepared – the fear of paying too much will be taken away.”

Ryan says, apart from market prices, the biggest change he’s seen in the past decade has been the amount of knowledge available to people.

“Consumers are a lot more savvy, much more informed,” he says. “Now we’ve got four online platforms buyers can go to, there is much more information at their disposal.”

Commercial space in demand The vast majority of the commercial space (retail, industrial and office) on the Coast is occupied, according to figures provided by Barfoot & Thompson commercial agent Graeme Perigo.

Office space in Silverdale has the highest rate of vacancy – 17 percent – with all other areas in single digits. However, Perigo says commercial activity in Silverdale remains strong. The new Briscoes development has created more retail options.

He says Whangaparāoa still shows signs of hesitancy in both retail and office. “The mall

upgrade has had some effect but the cost of entry for commercial space still tends to be lower than both Silverdale and Ōrewa.”

The Ōrewa beach front remains popular, especially for hospitality, and there is ongoing interest from experienced operators to come into the area.

“Vacancy remains low in Ōrewa but some retail sites remain vacant although this tends to be older buildings offering short term tenancies only,” he says. “With the popularity of the beach front this is slowly impacting on sites off the main road in a positive way.”

Stonewood grant means more meals

Bellyful Hibiscus Coast will be able to deliver 300 more meals for families this year after receiving $1000 as part of the Stonewood Homes Community Grant programme. In the past six months, the not-for-profit organisation has made and delivered close to 500 meals.

Bellyful’s service is primarily for families with a new baby, but the grant will assist it to support a wider need, especially grandparents who have taken on the primary care of their grandchildren. The Stonewood Community Grants programme offers a $1000 grant each month to small-to-medium businesses, charitable organisations, or educational facilities, with nominations coming from the community. RSV floods Coast surgeries Local doctors’ surgeries are being inundated with adults and children with respiratory illness this winter, including the potentially deadly respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).

RSV is a common, highly contagious virus that is particularly bad this year. It causes cold-like symptoms in healthy adults and older children, but in those aged under two it can be a lot more serious, potentially leading to bronchiolitis, which causes difficulty breathing, poor feeding and a wheeze. In such cases, a child will need to be seen in hospital, as it can lead to low oxygen levels and dehydration.

Dr Isabelle Duck of Silverdale Medical says the clinic has seen a deluge of patients with coughs, colds and related illnesses.

She says although Silverdale Medical does not routinely test for RSV, she suspects a lot of patients have had it.

Dr Peter Hall of The Doctors Whangaparāoa says it’s one of the worst seasons for this type of illness that he can remember since he came to the Coast in 1987.

“At least two of my patients, under the age of two years, were admitted to hospital and many others have been to the Emergency Department, monitored for a few hours, then sent home,” Dr Hall says. “We are receiving dozens of calls daily for advice about respiratory symptoms in adults and children.”

Doctors have surmised that the outbreak could be the result of lowered immunity – an unforeseen consequence of Covid-19

responses, such as lockdowns and social distancing.

Otago University epidemiologist, Michael Baker, agrees.

“While the methods we used to control transmission of Covid-19 in 2020 worked well, one consequence was that young children had less exposure to RSV last year,” he says. “This year we have more RSV circulating and a larger group of vulnerable children – hence a larger winter epidemic.”

Professor Graham Le Gros, immunologist and director of the Malaghan Institute of Medical Research in Wellington, says that the outbreak is a “wake up call” that a vaccine against RSV is needed.

He says currently one is being trialled in New Zealand.

“RSV is a serious disease that needs to be eliminated from the childhood infections that affect our communities,” he says.

What to look for

Dr Isabelle Duck has this advice: Most infants with RSV or bronchiolitis can be managed by their GP and monitored closely at home. Look for symptoms such as a wheeze, shortness of breath, exhaustion, floppiness and reduced fluid intake. Watch your back Back pain is one of the most common reasons people see their doctor, or even miss work.

If you are suffering from back pain, you may be experiencing symptoms varying from muscle aches through to shooting or burning sensations.

The good news is that most back pain will slowly get better with home treatment within a few weeks. However, there are some instances where you may need to see a doctor, chiropractor or physiotherapist, or even get immediate medical attention.

Volunteers of all ages welcomed guests to the first Meals and More free community dinner.

Connections made at Meals and More The latest free community meal initiative, Meals and More in Silverdale, welcomed around 25-30 guests to its first dinner, held on Sunday, July 11.

Organiser Caitlin Watson, a community worker with Coast Community Trust, says there was an abundance of food, supplied by Love Soup – “and lots of great connecting happening around the dinner table”.

On the menu were mini savouries, meat or fish with vegetables and fruit crumble with

sorbet for dessert.

“There was enough food to provide our guests with take home packs,” Caitlin says.

“Millies Cafe in Silverdale also donated the day’s leftover croissants and scones for guests to take away.”

The free meal is available to anyone, and is held on the second Sunday of every month at Coast Vineyard Church, 13 Agency Lane, Silverdale Village, from 5.30pm. The next one will be on August 8.

Although it seems counter intuitive, in general it is important that you try to get back to daily activities as soon as you can.

However any activities, including sports, that might worsen your back pain should be avoided. Consult a medical professional if unsure about the best approach to take.

For many, regular pain relief will be required.

Paracetamol, taken regularly as per dose instructions, can provide good relief.

NSAIDs such as ibuprofen or diclofenac, are very effective for back pain and may be used either alone or in conjunction with the paracetamol. However speak with your doctor or pharmacist about whether they might be right for you. There are several medications that NSAIDs interact with and some people for whom they might cause issues. A safer option may be to use a topical NSAID, such as a gel, as these are mostly absorbed directly at the site of application

and therefore do not have as much of a risk of interaction or side effects.

Traditionally menthol containing liniments such as Deep Heat have been used to relieve sore backs. These days there are a plethora of topical alternatives available. Antiflamme and Koru Fx are just two of many New Zealand-made natural topical creams that soothe muscular aches. Zostrix is also a topical cream employed for a variety of pain issues including backpack. It uses the active ingredient capsaicin, which comes from chillis, to help with pain. Nurofen has just released its Duralast Dermal Patch, which enables the medication (ibuprofen) to stay at the site for a full 24 hours.

Both hot and cold can help a sore back. You can use a wheat pack or covered hot water bottle for heat or an ice gel pack, whichever works for you. Some people even find alternating between the two to be the best option.

School-wide effort raises $46k World Vision’s 40 Hour Famine continues to be a popular fundraiser but this year KingsWay School and its community went the extra mile, raising more than $46,300.

30 student leaders from Years 10-13 worked hard to engage all students in the World Vision effort, from June 25 to 27, and many classes got quite competitive, trying to raise the most money. A number of students and their families got sponsored to fast from food, technology and even talking.

A three-hour walk, quiz night and online concert, as well as a mufti day and several sausage sizzles, were just some of the fundraising activities that the students, teachers and staff got involved in.

The school had hoped to raise around $20,000 so more than doubling that was very satisfying.

Coast and shore CAB hold hands

Last month saw the merger of the Hibiscus Coast Citizens’ Advice Bureau (CAB) with its North Shore counterpart.

The Ōrewa-based CAB is now a branch, along with five North Shore offices.

The organisation is quick to reassure locals that nothing else will change. The office remains in the same location, staffed by the same volunteers, under the same local manager. Outgoing chair Brian Sharplin says the merger came about because when the Ōrewa CAB started, 43 years ago, the Hibiscus Coast’s population was around 10,000. Currently, it’s around 60,000 and rapidly growing, forecast to be 180,000 by 2053. This has increased the need for CAB to deliver more services.

it is getting harder to continue at the level that is needed. By merging with the North Shore, Hibiscus Coast will have access to centralised training, along with an umbrella governance board over the six branches.”

He says being able to discuss problems and issues with colleagues from other branches will also be helpful.

“This is an exciting step forward to ensure CAB Hibiscus Coast continues to deliver at the highest level providing free advice and guidance to the wider community.”

The Rotary Club of Ōrewa decided in early 2016 that the best way of attracting younger people to join was to implement a new and more flexible formula.

This resulted in the formation of the Rotary Satellite Club of Ōrewa-Millwater, which enjoyed a more relaxed format and attracted a diverse and inclusive membership – half female and with an average age under 50.

Fast forward five years and both clubs decided that uniting would be best for the Hibiscus community.

The focus on a younger demographic is still strong, with Rakesh Mistry, aged 37, taking over as the inaugural president of the newly merged Rotary Club of ŌrewaMillwater from July 1.

Rakesh said the merger, which gives the club a total of 34 members, helps it take on new challenges, while still focusing on its core purpose of supporting local, national and international charities.

This means the Coast now has two Rotary clubs – Ōrewa-Millwater and Whangaparāoa.

The Rotary Club of Ōrewa-Millwater meets on the first and third Tuesdays of each month at The Wade Tavern in Silverdale, at 7pm, but several meet there from 6pm for a sociable drink and bite to eat. New members always welcome to come and socialise.

Protection plan under scrutiny Increased marine protection – and a reduction in fishing – is on the cards for the seas around Shakespear Regional Park and Tiritiri Matangi Island as a result of the new Revitalising the Gulf – Government Action on the Sea Change Plan published recently.

He says there is too little emphasis on commercial fishers and thinks a total ban of bottom, Danish, purse seining and scallop dredging across the entire Gulf should be considered. He is also concerned that small boats leaving Whangaparāoa would be forced to travel much further out to fish, raising safety issues.

A new High Protection Area is proposed for waters to the south of Tiri as far as the cable protection zone, as well as a Seafloor Protection Area surrounding that and the eastern tip of the Whangaparāoa Peninsula (see map).

High Protection Areas are comparable to no-take marine reserves, while Seafloor Protection Areas will protect seabed habitats from some fishing (especially dredging, bottom trawling and Danish seining), sand extraction and mining.

The Government says the 18 new areas proposed throughout the Gulf will become law in 2024, and almost triple the region’s marine protection, from 6.6 percent to 17.6 percent.

The plan has broadly been welcomed locally, although with reservations. Terry Creagh will be addressing the Hauraki Gulf Forum about the plan on August 23, on behalf of the NZ Sport Fishing Council, the NZ Marine Research Fund and the Warkworth Gamefish Club, among others.

Supporters of Tiritiri Matangi chair Carl Hayson has welcomed the plan, saying its timing is vital with the depletion of marine life in the Gulf in recent years.

“Even round Tiri, you can see that with the waters around the island. The ranger used to gather scallop and crayfish, but the kina have taken over now and there’s nothing,” he says.

“I think people are more supportive of it now than 20 years ago, when they tried to put a reserve around Tiri, even the fishermen.

“It would be part of the whole conservation effort. It will probably take a few years, but we’re supportive of it, it would be very good for the area.”

Is Gulf ferry service fit for purpose?

Cancellation of the 7.30am commuter ferry from Gulf Harbour to the city on several occasions last month, with little notice and no replacement, was the last straw for passengers.

A number took to social media saying they were unimpressed, as they were left scrambling to get to work on time. ‘Vessel breakdown’ was the reason given by ferry operator Fullers360 and commuters say the service has become so unreliable that it is forcing them back into cars and buses.

The Gulf Harbour Ferry Facebook group, with nearly 600 members, keeps a spreadsheet detailing ferry cancellations.

It shows that so far this year (January-July) most cancellations have been unavoidable, due to weather – this made up 69 percent of cancellations and in most cases,

a replacement bus was provided. Overall, 10 percent of cancellations were due to mechanical breakdowns, only two percent of those with no replacement service provided.

Fullers360 chief operations officer, Paul Trotman is apologetic.

Manly Brigade welcomes youngest-ever volunteer When Lulu Smith of Arkles Bay turned 16 in May, she wasted no time signing up as a volunteer with Manly Fire Brigade.

She is thought to be the station’s youngest ever volunteer – at 16 you need parental permission and support for the role.

This was something her mother, former Manly fire volunteer (and Hibiscus Matters graphic designer) Lorry McCarthy, was happy to provide.

Lulu says her mother’s time as a volunteer meant quite often hanging out at the station for social events or “waiting for mum” when she was a child.

“I grew up around the fire station and there were quite a lot of other kids my age there too,” she says.

She was also impressed by her mother’s dedication to the fire service, which Lorry fitted in with being a solo mum of two, and holding down a fulltime job.

It made Lulu keen to become a volunteer firefighter herself – she began thinking about it when she was 12.

Currently she is doing initial training with four other new recruits, most aged in their 20s. This takes 6-8 months and focuses on basic skills and knowledge, contained in a

thick book described as ‘the Red Brick’.

Recruits then undertake a one-week intensive recruitment course that qualifies them as a volunteer firefighter.

Lulu is also training alongside qualified firefighters once a week. Firefighter and assistant training officer Deon Holgate says she is surprising people by picking things up fast.

Within six months she could be on the firetruck as an observer, or tasked with small jobs at callouts, he says.

He says all recruits are well prepared for the challenging and confronting scenarios they may face as a firefighter.

“As trainers we need to prepare everyone for what they are potentially going to do and see,” Deon says. “So when they attend their first car accident or fire, that training takes over.”

Lulu is thinking about going into early childhood education as a career, but says volunteering for the community is important to her.

Meanwhile, she is enjoying the training nights.

“I’m always excited to go, and it’s really nice getting to know everyone,” she says.

Opening moves start well for Hibiscus Coast chess club

Hospice hoedown She once famously said, “it costs a lot of money to look this cheap,” and this month she’s in town – not quite Dolly Parton, but Karen Davy performing as Dolly – in a fundraising event for Harbour Hospice, Country On The Coast.

Karen will be singing all the well-known Dolly numbers at the August 21 show at Ōrewa College’s Arts and Events Centre, including Jolene, Here You Come Again, 9 to 5 and Islands In the Stream with Ken Strong as Kenny Rogers.

The 90-minute show will be preceded by a half-hour line-dancing lesson and followed by a hoedown where you can kick up your heels.

Event organiser Jan Adams says it’s “all about good fun, good music and Dolly”.

Country On the Coast is the seventh fundraiser of this kind for Harbour

Hospice, with all proceeds going back to the local hospice in Red Beach.

“I think people will really love this,” says Jan. “There are a lot of country music lovers on the Coast and line dancing has a huge following.”

Karen Davy has performed as Dolly for more than 30 years and loves her “because she has a great sense of humour and is not afraid to tell people that she’s had plastic surgery and wears wigs”.

“She’s also a very astute businesswoman,” Karen says.

Karen has been to both of Dolly’s New Zealand shows and 10 years ago appeared on the TV show Stars In Their Eyes as Dolly.

“We all know there’s only one Dolly, but I just can’t get enough of performing as her.”

Forming a local chess club proved to be as simple as asking on social media if anyone was keen, says Waiwera chess player Anthony Williams.

Anthony says enquiries came flooding in and 10 players attended the first meeting of Hibiscus Coast Chess, held on July 9 in Silverdale.

Anthony, 39, has played chess since he was a boy. He wanted to form a club because club membership is required if you want to play in NZ Chess Federation tournaments.

“I found that the closest clubs to the Coast are Whangarei or Mt Eden, so plan B was to start my own,” he says.

Chess appeals to all ages, and people with different skill and experience levels can play each other. Hibiscus club members so far are aged from nine years to 50 plus.

Anthony’s father taught him how to play and Anthony says he had to wait years to beat him – until he was 16.

“The first thing he taught me is that it’s not a game for people that like to win – you are going to lose, and lose a lot.

It’s about strategy and perseverance because there’s no-one that you can’t beat,” he says.

Anthony wasted no time signing up for his first tournament, which was held in Auckland last weekend.

Joining the Hibiscus Coast Chess club costs $75, which includes registration with the NZ Chess Federation. This means you can play in tournaments – but the club also enables you to meet other chess enthusiasts and learn from each other. Casual play is also possible for a $2 donation.

The club meets three times a month in a vacant retail space in the Silverdale Centre (near OPSM), which has been donated to the club until a tenant is found. The next meeting is on August 13.

Plant and they will come In the early 1900s the Hibiscus Coast was largely farmland – you’ve no doubt seen the early photos of a barren peninsula with a few small pockets of bush. Even the coastal cliffs, which now have a good covering of pohutukawa, were largely bare.

This left the Coast with little bird life aside from the introduced open country species.

As suburbia crept over the area, the situation improved. There is certainly a wider variety of birds in my neighbourhood now than in the open sheep paddocks it was built on.

Fantails and silvereyes, for example, do well in the mix of vegetation we grow in our gardens.

Even tui and kereru are doing well in the suburban Hibiscus Coast. But we really have to thank pest-free Tiritiri Matangi Island and Shakespear Park, along with pest control in parks such as Wenderholm, for the large number of kereru. These long-lived birds breed well in the possum free park environment and travel long distances into our gardens.

However, for some less common native birds – robins and whiteheads for example – there is no substitute for bush. While most of the recent bird arrivals on the Coast are here because they like the open environment

created by people, many native birds are more at home in native vegetation.

If we want these birds to settle among us when they fly the Shakespear Open Sanctuary fence, then we need to look after the bush we have and continue to plant more where we can.

Over the last few years Forest and Bird has been holding annual planting days at Karaka Cove beside Whangaparāoa Road. If you haven’t visited it, there’s a lovely little walk from the bottom end of Matheson Road.

You’ll see kereru and tui in the older trees but also plenty of fantails and greywarblers around the newer plantings.

Forest and Bird has a planting day at Karaka Cove on August 7 at 9.30am. Come along and plant some trees, then sit back and wait.

The birds will come.

Gongs go to surf lifesaving volunteers The Coast’s surf lifeguards were recognised for the work they put in at Ōrewa and Red Beach over summer, at the Surf Life Saving Northern Region Awards of Excellence on Saturday 17 July. Red Beach and Ōrewa clubs each picked up seven trophies.

Red Beach’s included: Outstanding Contribution to Junior Surf, Claire Burgham; Junior Coach of the Year, Brendon Rutledge-Malyon; Under-19 Sportsman, Patrick Makgil; Developing Surf Official, Andrew Short; and Surf Lifeguard of the Year, Harry Mellor. The club also picked up the Cath & Eddie Millar Cup for junior surf competition and won the Northern Region Junior Surf Championships. Long-serving Red Beach club member Michelle Newton was honoured with a life membership. Ōrewa picked up six individual sports titles for its strong youth contingent – the Under-14 title went jointly to Elizabeth Brennan and Mason King, and the Under-15 jointly to Isla Petherbridge and Kailen Brackebush. George Wenman won the Under-17 Sportsman and the Under-19 Sportswoman was Kendra Stinson.

Examiner of the Year was Benny Larsen.

Service Awards went to Jon Copeland, Jenny Fergus and Kelly McColl of Ōrewa and Peter Kramer of Red Beach.

Ten-year-old Gulf Harbour School student Hunter Brown is looking forward to doing the Tongariro Crossing later this year with his classmates. The 19.4km tramp is a challenge that requires good fitness and Hunter’s mum, Marie, says she was surprised, and a bit skeptical, when Hunter suggested he train by walking from his home in Ferry Road, Arkles Bay, to school each day.

She has been proved wrong – Hunter has been doing the 9.5km walk every day, whatever the weather, leaving at 7am. The walk takes 1.5 hours and on wet days, he takes an umbrella. The Gulf Harbour School students are doing the crossing in Term 4, so there is another full term of walking ahead for Hunter. Give him a friendly wave or toot your horn if you see him.

School pool closes for good

Stanmore Bay School has decided to remove its pool, largely because the costs associated with repairing the structure and getting it up to new health and safety compliance standards were far higher than removing it. The pool has been out of action since 2018. Swim instruction at Stanmore Bay Pool & Leisure Centre will continue to fill the gap. There will be further consultation with the school whanau on what to do with the area once the pool has gone.

Mixed results for Coast football The Hibiscus Coast Football Club’s number one teams both hosted big games at home in Stanmore Bay last month.

It was a good opportunity for local supporters although the weather meant most watched the action from the covered deck or even from cars parked facing the ground, expressing their approval by tooting their horns.

The club’s Women’s No. 1 team, which plays in the NRF Championship Senior Women’s league, played top of the table Papakura on Sunday, July 11.

The local side lost, 2-6, and are currently positioned fourth on the table with Papakura keeping the top spot.

Meanwhile the Men’s No. 1 team took on Northland in a NRFL Men’s Division 2 game on Saturday, July 17.

The two teams were equal on the table, and the game reflected this. However, Hibiscus Coast captain Nate Canton scored the only goal of the match in the 24th minute, to put his team up to 7th place in the league.

In both leagues, there is still plenty of football still to play.

Men: The Coast, green and white strip, secured a win against Northland to move up the table.

Women: Papakura continues its winning run – the Coast women came close last time the two teams met, with a 2-2 draw, but this time they lost 2-6.
