IT’S WAY TOO DAMN HOT.
Don’t get me wrong, I love summer. I LOOOOOOOVE summer. I’d just love it more if it were a steady 75 Degrees instead of 103. As a kid, I loved running around in the hot sun all day, building forts in the dirt for my G.I. JOES, skateboarding down the hot asphalt, cactus wars in the woods...but I don’t remember it being this hot. Do you? Maybe the weathers changing. Or maybe i’m just getting too old. Either way, this is great beach weather and we still have 2 more months of beautiful bikini models on our covers. This month we are featuring Melissa Guy. Melissa runs a modeling agency called RUNWAY 11. Check out her centerfold on page 16 & 17. I’ve been a recluse for a while, thus i’ve been feeling disconnected with what is going on in the local original music rock scene, so I decided to venture out again and see what was happening. Lo and behold, I discovered THE SPARKPLUG. A cool little music venue in Edinburg. The bands playing were young and extremely talented. We got to see acts like Incendium, The Skeptic, 5 foot 5 and Gandma was a hottie and were really impressed. It’s good to know the underground rock scene is still alive and kicking! Speaking of rock, we interviewed several local and national rock bands this month. Stereotype brings back the grunge, The Chimies are full of acoustic groove, Eleven:Eleven bring the electronic and 4bitten bring the heavier stuff. to begin painting, but doesn’t have the time to commit to a long-term class environment. Many of our customers come for the fun and realize that they have a talent for painting.
MAGX: What did it take to get The Tipsy Canvas up and running in McAllen?
MAGX: So, in the event of an “accident” (paint spills and what not) is there a mad rush to take care of it, or does it just add character to the establishment?
TC: We saw that there was a need in the Rio Grande Valley to introduce more people to art and believe that the Tipsy Canvas experience appeals to a broad audience and was a perfect fit for McAllen. MAGX: Are the paintings all 100% original work, (by the customers) or is there a template that they follow, king of a “paint by numbers” thing? TC: All painters start with a blank canvas. No pre-drawing or paint by numbers here. We have a local artist lead the class through the painting step by step. We break the painting down into steps that even the first time painters can follow. MAGX: What are some of the benefits of working in such a unique setting? TC: We focus on keeping a light atmosphere in the class and providing an outlet for relaxation and fun. The Tipsy Canvas is also a great starting point for someone who has always wanted
TC: We are a painting studio, therefore, paint spills are inevitable. We have paint on the floor, walls, and occasionally on the ceiling. I am still not sure how that happens. If you do spill a little paint, we will probably make fun of you a bit, but it is all part of the fun. Our “biggest accident” is when painters put their paintbrush in their wine glass instead of the water glass. Note of warning to prospective customers: You will be called out if you do this, but it is all in good humor. MAGX: Would The Tipsy Canvas consider expanding the media beyond the realm of a paintbrush? TC: Paintbrushes are the Tipsy Canvas weapon of choice. We aim to keep things as simple as possible so that when the “tipsy” kicks in you can still stay on track. We specialize in acrylic painting. It is a great medium for the beginner and advanced painter alike.
MAGX: Has the McAllen Art Walk helped to increase exposure of The Tipsy Canvas, or vice versa? TC: The Art Walk is a great event for exploring art in McAllen. We have a class during every Art Walk. Art Walk patrons are always welcome to stop by and see The Tipsy Canvas in action and experience the fun. MAGX: In any given class, what does the general demographic look like? TC: One of the things people love about The Tipsy Canvas is that everyone feels welcome here. Young and old, male and female all enjoy painting at The Tipsy Canvas. We have kids’ classes on Saturdays at noon and adult classes during the evenings. Adult classes are great for date nights, girls night out, or just a fun relaxing evening. MAGX: First of all, you have an amazing voice. How long did it take you to mesh this incredible sound of ElectroDisco/Pop with those sensational vocals? EE: Well, our first tracks are on the “Infection EP”. We started off working well together, but I would say that over the last year we have really come into our sound. MAGX: Both of you complement each other in your music. How did you two initially come together? EE: We met through mutual friends about 4 years ago. It was a while before we talked about anything involving music. Eventually, Jake heard me sing and we decided to work on a project together. MAGX: There is so much going on in your music from the electric and shades of what you guys stated on your website as an 80’s Throwback. How do you know what sounds to pick from? EE: Jake: I don’t really. It’s kind of like surfing just waiting for the wave while producing the music. It just comes to me. MAGX: with Producer Jake Childs of POSR (electric punk band from Austin)? Awesome. He is brilliant and a huge inspiration. MAGX: One of my favorite songs is Little White Lies. What was your inspiration for it? EE: Sicca: The lyrics could be viewed from several perspectives. Could be society as a whole involving authority or a personal relationship of some kind. Really just talking about misuse of trust to take advantage of the follower. MAGX: I saw the, “No Words,” Voyeur Music Video shot in Austin, Texas and thought it was great. What was it like to shoot that in a city rich in musical history and known for its diverse scene?
ELECTRONIC EE: We are from austin and we love it here! MAGX: The SXSW (South By Southwest) Festival was this past March and you guys were busy putting on shows of your own. What is it like to be a part of SXSW? Do you have any plans to play in the Austin City Limits line-up come October?
EE: Never compromise your art. Be secure in who you are and know what you want. Otherwise, there’s no message to convey and no basis for connecting with other people. MAGX: If you had to pick one group/ band to open up for at a show, who would it be?
EE: We were asked to play at several unofficial SXSW gigs this year. We had a great time as always. No plans to play ACL this year.

MAGX: Tell us something about Sicca and Jake that most readers would not know?
EE: Doing the same as we are now. Sharing our music with others in order to connect with others.
EE: Sicca makes clothes and Jake practices NLP and hypnotherapy in spare time.
MAGX: How important is the local scene for artists showcasing their talent?
MAGX: Recently, you came down to Brownsville, Texas and performed. How was your experience here? Did you know much about this part of Texas prior to performing here?
EE: Local or worldwide its the same. You must connect with your audience. We love playing our hometown!
EE: We had previously never been to Brownsville. We really didn’t know what to expect! We were pleasantly surprised by the turnout and the overall vibe of the party. Never expected to see so many hipsters in Brownsville! lol MAGX: You have had the opportunity to work with variety of others like Houston’s own Lucas Keizer and Punks Jump Up from London. What help, if any, have these artists contributed in you furthering your sound for future albums? EE: We like working with other artists that we enjoy for remixes. It’s always great to see how other artists interpret our sound through their vibe . MAGX: What advice would you give any artists trying to break through the local scene?

MAGX: Where does Eleven:Eleven see themselves in 3 years?
MAGX: You were unconventional in the release of your music. What was the reason behind the release of your album in a series rather than the traditional full album? EE: Its a changing world. The old ways of releasing an album was great for its time but we believe that releasing fresh material every month for us is the route we want to go. As we focus more on each track as a single rather than being a filler track for an album. Each track will have its own time to shine. Plus the voices told jake to do it this way, lol MAGX: What can fans expect from Eleven:Eleven’s next series? EE: We still have 9 more tracks to release for the first series. Just started working on the new one actually! We don’t even know what’s coming next!

The trio began as a group of friends who shared a passion for music, and eventually came together under the name Stereotype. Resembling the sounds of Nirvana, these Edinburg natives are bringing back a 90’s grunge style of music with modern twist. MAGX: How did you get your start as band? Chris: We were just old friends who happened to be musicians and one day we jammed out and had good sync. Cherry: Later on about a month later I messaged Gaby one day to join us and play bass so she gave it a shot and it worked out really well. Kinda like a 3 piece puzzle that fit perfectly. MAGX: Where did the band name come from? Cherry: Chris and I were jamming one day we were just saying random names and I said Stereotype and Chris liked it. We had the name before Gaby joined us but she dug it anyways so it was ok. MAGX: Why this particular genre of music? Cherry: Chris was aiming for the 90's era while Gaby and I were up for anything and had our mind opened up to whatever came out. So we ended up falling into the Alternative/ Grunge/Pop genre.
MAGX: What is the inspiration behind your music/songs? Chris: I'm just inspired with things I see around me and my imagination. Most of the songs I've written were through personal experiences with a twist of my imagination and just day dreaming. Others were just of things I notice through friends and stuff I read in articles. MAGX: What sets you apart from other bands? What makes you special? ST: We try not to follow the trend of the "music scene" here in the valley. Our fans really enjoy our fresh sound because of that.
ST: Like every other band, to tour and reach out to every possible fan who enjoys music as much as we do. MAGX: What is next for the band? ST: Our full length EP album that will be up on itunes for you all to check out, our merch store with shirts, bracelets, stickers, dogtags, etc., and a few endorsement deals. MAGX: What message do you want to send the audience with your music? ST: Do what you really want with your life and stick to it, we're just here to help and guide you all with our music.
MAGX: Since you first started, how have you evolved as a group?
MAGX: Where can people hear/buy your music?
ST: Practicing does help a lot of course but other than that we just flow so well with every new song or idea we have.

BY: RAMON TREVINO MAGX: How has the world of modeling shaped you into the person we see today? MG: It’s the world I belong in. I express my passions through it. I understand, ironically as this may sound, the beauty in what others find to not be. My understanding towards life in its entirety has expanded. I feel wise beyond my years, which explains why I’m so ambitious. I am so used to the word no; I have learned to keep going until I hear a yes. For the 50 no’s I hear, I will work till I hear that sweet little word YES! I take pride in my journey of no’s. MAGX:What is the potential of talent you see within the Rio Grande Valley? MG: I’m astonished, just blown to pieces. The talent from designers, hair and makeup artists, photographers, magazines, stylist, and models is impeccable. Every artist is on their A-game, sharing their soul of inspiration. Every new project I come across fuels the fashion in me and if that is happening, I know it’s a great thing. MAGX: What kind of success have you had since you opened Runway Eleven School of Modeling? MG: Success for me is about getting everyone in on a project paid. I can honestly say as of 2012, 80% of my projects make enough to pay the whole team involved. I live to boost the local economy thru fashion. MAGX: I read in a previous article about you that you instruct the models of the business history this profession shares. How important is it to have that knowledge in a multi-billion dollar industry? MG: Extremely, you must acknowledge the fashion behind the camera and in front of the camera. In knowing that, you will be a successful model. MAGX: What advice would you give young girls who are considering joining the world of modeling? MG: Seek that career if you have a complete understanding that it is a business and not a platform to become famous. This industry is tricky; you must have brains to succeed. Of course natural beauty and great figures help, but you need to know how to make the industry work for you. MAGX: Aside from running a modeling agency, you are a mother as well. How do you manage to divide your time between your family and your craft? MG: L-o-v-e!!! My hubby, kids, and I make it work. We each support each other in all aspects of our life’s, careers, school, sports, etc. I mix business and family all the time. I take kids to shoots or castings with me, the fashionistas love my family. Fashionistas come over to my home as well we have lunch coffee brainstorm ideas. I just make it work. It’s really one big family. That’s one of the beauties of being my own boss. My life to me makes more sense this way. MAGX: Tell us something about Melissa Guy that our readers would not know. MG: I love spending time in the kitchen listening to neosoul R&B, it’s the only time I feel like a queen. MAGX: What are the hottest trends in fashion right now, and what should we look forward to in the next few months? MG: Walk the line - Johnny Cash, La Bamba - Ritchie Valens, Shout - the Isley brothers. Catching on yet? Fashion at this very moment is rooted in the fifties. Think cat framed shades, high-waisted bottoms, floral prints, winged liner, big teased bops, and imagination. Take the advice, make it your own and most importantly make it fun.

MAGX: Can you give me a brief history on how the band came to be? CHIMIES: Our band started with Eric Paul Zapata and Stephen Carlos Muñoz getting together to jam out on Acoustic Taylor and Cajon. Vikki Camacho added her voice to the mix, separated for about two years… Came back together to start putting together a plan for a ten track original CD. We got our start in Harlingen playing for local spots with Christopher Bartnesky on Bass, Allen Lingensjo on Drums, Omar Guajardo on Lead guitar. MAGX: For those who haven’t heard your guys, how would you describe your sound? CHIMIES: Each one of the band members has a lot of different genres under their belt and we try to just mix up and fuse our different sounds together. We have spent the first year perfecting our mixture through our cover songs- At our live performances you will hear songs by Otis Redding, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Lauryn Hill, John Mayer, Bob Marley, Alicia Keys, Etta James, Roberta Flack, Bruno Mars, Amy Winehouse, Adele and the list goes on… and in our first year we’ve also really kept our originals evolving and brewing and challenging ourselves to really create something all our own. MAGX: What are your musical and nonmusical influences?
BY: NIKKY KHAOS CHIMIES: Life experiences, Common situations shared between the band members. We sing about love, heartbreak and celebrating life. MAGX: Who writes the songs and what are they about?
CHIMIES: All of our days start at our jobs, so the creative process doesn’t begin until after hours... Any day of the week there are at least 2-3 Chimies hanging out and every week there is a gig between us and our brother bands, Supertree and The Vangoes.
CHIMIES: On our first CD we collaborated with several different artists: Shawn Elliot, Lamar Jones, Jandre and Roland Treviño. All of the concepts for the songs on our album were a product of EP Productions. During the recording process, which is where we solidified the structure for each song, all musicians involved brought their unique sounds to the studio. The CD is a culmination of each member’s musical creativity that had evolved at our one year mark.
MAGX: What are your feelings on the music industry today?
MAGX: Describe your show, visual and musically.
CHIMIES: It’s not just good music, it’s a great show too. During our three day CD release we experienced the high energy we had been looking for amongst the audience- by the end of the night both the band and the crowd were engaged and moving to our original music. CHIMIES: During a live show, it’s a very involved session amongst the group and the audience. It’s a live experience. It’s become more of a show as we are trying to step away from the stigma of an everyday cover band. “It’s always a fun time when The Chimies are playing”, is what we usually hear from our audience. MAGX: Tell us a story about a day in your life.
CHIMIES: Sometimes it’s just better to stay independent. You get to keep your full creative freedom. We want our music to be a representation of all the elements that come together, from our live performance to the studio. MAGX: Tell us about your next show and why we should be there.
