I am also very keen to hear how Dorset business are faring in the current climate and to hear about your specific concerns – and to see where we can help, whether that be through our lobbying or business support. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch and we will do our best to help.

I’d like to begin by offering our heartful condolences to the members of the Royal family following the very sad loss of our Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty was Patron of the British Chambers of Commerce for many years and was always very supportive of the role and work of chambers in supporting businesses across the UK. It is clearly a time of great loss and mourning for our nation and I am sure our King Charles III will follow in his mother’s footsteps and lead the Commonwealth with great dignity, compassion and humanity. I also feel this time is a moment in history we should be extremely proud of and will hopefully unite us as we look to the future.

I’d like to welcome our new Prime Minister Liz Truss. My hope is that now the Government can unite, and our Prime Minister will be able to lead with the full support of Government. Never is this leadership more needed than at this time, with soaring inflation and exponential energy price rises – it is a very challenging time for business and Government need to be doing all they can to provide support.

Finally I’d like to say a big thank you to our fantastic Business Partners for their ongoing support confirmed in October. Special thanks to Lester Aldridge who recently moved from Platinum Partner to our top level of Premier Partner, and thanks to Platinum Partners

A warm welcome to our October magazine and I hope you’ve had a good summer.

As a Chamber, we continue to do our best for our members and Dorset businesses. Through our membership of the British Chambers of Commerce, we are nationally pushing for increased support for businesses to include emergency energy grants for businesses, giving Ofgem further powers to strengthen regulation of the energy market for businesses, a temporary cut in VAT to 5% to reduce energy costs for businesses and the Government to temporarily reverse NICs and put money

We are also launching a new programme for businesses, free to attend, being a series of virtual workshops all with a specific theme, aimed at building the resilience of businesses. Working in partnership with Dorset and BCP Councils, we are also launching a range of virtual workshops around ESG (environmental, social and governance) covering critical aspects of all three areas, free to attend and open to all Dorset businesses. Our aim, as always, is to do our very best to support Dorset businesses.

Cost-effectiveness:

With all your business data and applications stored centrally in the cloud, the flexibility of access increases, allowing your teams to access this information on any device, wherever they are. This offers the opportunity to grow your business on a global basis, improves collaboration of teams and removes the headaches associated with on-premise access.

As well as this, the cloud offers real-time monitoring to protect your business from downtime. Not only can you receive alerts when an issue arises – allowing you to act quickly – the functionalities are designed to pre-empt and prevent any issues.

Migrating to the cloud can offer increased security over on-premise when storing information and data centrally. Most cloud providers have security at their core and offer built-in security features to protect your business.

It is a trusted technology partner and works as an extension of your IT teams to plug any knowledge, resource and skill gaps.

As businesses, we cannot afford to work in an ineffective, slow infrastructure that doesn’t offer the agility required to rapidly scale with our objectives and our teams’ and customers’ changing demands.

VIZST Technology is a privately owned technology partner, supporting SME, enterprises and public sector organisations with technologies and strategies to enable and improve business performance.

One of the major benefits of the cloud is the infinite availability of space. Not only does this offer uncapped storage opportunities, but the nature of the cloud model is designed around scalability – meaning your resources and capacity can be scaled up or down in line with your demands. This removes the element of wastage in space, budget and resource required to manage the process.

It consults, implements and supports, whilst remaining vendor agnostic, focusing on best fit technologies to meet its clients’ objectives.

Its wealth of technologies and expertise solve real problems for its clients, keeping their customers and teams connected and their businesses secure through innovative technologies and proactive management.

irreversible data loss or opening your business up to security vulnerabilities.

The sliding scale of resource required has a direct impact on your bottom line. By only paying for the resource you need as and when you need it, you can better control your budget. What’s more, the reduction or even elimination of your on-premise data centre, removes the associated costs of unnecessary assets and equipment and even the utility bills associated with keeping a data centre functioning – which is more important than ever in this financial climate.

These challenges can be avoided by working with the right cloud migration partner. Costs can be minimised by developing a comprehensive and realistic migration strategy and following that to the tee.

Empowering customers through user experience:

Not only this, but the robust hardware and speed of network connections offered by this migration will substantially improve the overall experience for all users.

By utilising the expertise of a managed service provider, you will be able to eliminate compatibility issues and data security risks, thereby ensuring a successful migration.

Now more than ever, your customers demand a multi-channel user experience, delivered in the most simplistic form. Utilising cloud services allows you to build more responsive applications that use interconnected services to improve your user experience.

Management & monitoring:

Whilst the benefits speak for themselves, there are still hurdles that businesses need to overcome in this process. A bad migration strategy could, at best, slow your processes down. At worst, you risk

CGI is an exceptional product development and marketing tool and with a growing appetite for high quality images the future for this specialised sector is assured.

The film industry saw the first use of CGI back in 1958 with the creation of animation cells using mechanical computers in Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo. Later in 1976 the first animation sequence was seen in the film Futureworld. The vast majority of people do not realise how long this technology has been around.

Less known applications would be for example, technical authors who are increasingly using CGI in the form of augmented reality to explain their equipment maintenance. The technology is able to provide unparalleled detail with supporting text to explain complex maintenance operations.

CGI: 64 Years On

The process for creating CGI images or animations is relatively straightforward: capture clear specifications and requirements, create a series of draft images to capture requirements, render image, then present to client. The model once created can be used to provide stills, animations and even recreated as an object by 3D printing. Realistic and detailed imagery created by CGI has transformed industries and businesses, and will continue to do so as the world becomes ever more digital.

Computer Generated Imagery (CGI) is a term commonly used to describe digitally generated graphics, created to represent life like objects or images. Cancellations due to weather or technical issues were common, increasing project lead times and cost. There is also an environmental benefit, reduced need for car journeys, train or air travel. It can be argued CGI has helped to lower businesses’ carbon footprints.

“Her Majesty performed her duties with such dignity and calm assurance during a remarkable reign which has served as an inspiration and example to so many. Having opened as Poole Arts Centre in April 1978, the building was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II on 23 March 1979 during a visit to Poole with Prince Philip. The Queen and Prince Phillip returned on 28 July 2004, arriving by helicopter at King’s Park in Bournemouth where they were greeted by a crowd of 5000. They visited the renamed Lighthouse to officially reopen the building following its major refurbishment before touring the new RNLI training college. Afterwards, thousands watched as the royal couple left by lifeboat from Poole Quay.

“The profound loss we now feel is mirrored by thanks for her life of exemplary public service, including her support for business as patron of the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC).

President’s Column by Caron Khan

Lucy Maidman, who runs the business with sister Sophie, said: “We have noticed through the summer an increase in people storing possessions because of house moves.

It said that an increase in home working and rising costs in London were the main reasons.

“Our facilities in Poole, Bournemouth and Basingstoke are in the areas people are moving to – either commuter towns so they can get to London two or three times a week, or coastal areas.

“Some are buying second homes but most are relocating and when we speak to them they usually say that they no longer need to live in London because they can work from home.

We are an outward facing county, welcoming and engaging people from all over the world, and with our unique experiences and destinations, we need to maximise awareness of these to continue to grow both inbound and domestic tourism in the future.

Tourism in Dorset is valued at £1billion a year and employs over 40,000 people across the region. These figures demonstrate the importance of tourism, in sustaining services that local communities benefit from all year round and its role as a vital part of the local economy.

And this summer it has noticed an increase in the number of those moving to commuter and coastal areas.

“Some will go into London a couple of times a week, but they are able to move away and save a lot of money.

Figures from estate agent Hamptons showed that more than 60,000 Londoners bought a home outside of the capital in the first half of last year – the highest number since records began in 2006.

“And the trend of people relocating from London looks like it is continuing – it’s something that has happened since the lockdowns.

Good news! Dorset Tourism has been summersuccesstremendousathis

New figures show that tourism is a major factor to the Dorset economy bringing a record number of visitors to the county. This comes after thousands of tourists flocked to the coast and the wider Dorset area packing out the beaches and many pubs, restaurants and cafés as temperatures rose to over 30 degrees in one of the warmest and driest summers for many years.

With more people able to work from home and cheaper properties further out of London it follows that people will make the move for a better work-life balance.

“They are able to improve their worklife balance and live in nicer areas.

“We anticipate that this trend will continue as hybrid working becomes more established, London costs continue to rise and strikes often mean people can’t commute anyway.”

And this trend appears to have continued with Store & Secure noticing a surge in recent months as house sales completed.

Dorset offers spectacular coastlines and outstanding countryside, so it is no surprise that it has broad appeal to both domestic and overseas visitors.

London flight is continuing, with storage businesses in Dorset and Hampshire reporting more people leaving the capital.

It was 2009 and I’d just landed my first senior role working for an emerging insurance brand.

It was an instant success and very quickly our PPC web conversion increased.

This reduced what it was costing me currently to generate a quote using PPC and meant that I could introduce more expensive PPC keywords whilst still achieving an average £20 cost per quote.

We were spending a decent sum on PPC and other channels can be implemented to drive more traffic but unlikely to cost in at £100 or less. I therefore needed to figure out how to drive more traffic whilst getting the cost per quote down.

It was July 2020. Covid had been with us for months and changed the way we all lived and worked. Many businesses were in survival mode and at Insightful we had lost 40 per cent of our clients. We were focusing on getting to grips with how we could support clients in this new world.

How could we help clients achieve more sales with a reduced budget, fewer resources and web visitors? The answer was increasing customer lifetime value. Customer lifetime value is a measure of the average customer’s revenue generated over their entire relationship with a company.

way to achieve more with less demand for their services. We believe a focus on customer lifetime value is the answer.

• Web conversion – improved from 1% to 2%

The only answer was to increase our web conversion. I sketched out a landing page specifically for PPC and sent it to our web agency to develop so we could test it.

Yearly income has increased by over three times and lifetime income by over five times with slight improvements to four key metrics. In order to achieve this, you need a plan for each.

Within six months PPC spend had increased from £20k per month to £150k with the web conversion improved from 19% to 38% to quote, with digital sales on average costing £100. More importantly I had more than doubled sales. With work to introduce more channels such as SEO, email, affiliates etc and holding retention rates at 80%, revenues rocketed and sales tripled.

• Retention improved from two to three

My measure for success was easy – to drive digital sales and as many as I could for a cost per acquisition of £100. If over £100 it would break our business model and reduce our profit.

Now let me take you back to show you how I first helped a business use these metrics to rapidly grow.

Fast forward to today and we are yet again facing uncertain times so yet again businesses are looking for a

To show the value, let’s look at the numbers. Here we have a business that has implemented plans to improve four key metrics (see figure one):

• Frequency of purchase in a year improved from two to three

After 2.5 years with the business we were acquired for £58m. The key to my success was not focusing purely on driving more traffic, but also on increasing web conversion, average order value, frequency of purchase and retention rates.

DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / BUSINESS PARTNER NEWS /dorsetchamber @DorsetChamber14 October 2022 | Dorset Business Focus /company/dorset-chamber/

• Average order value improved from £100 to £120

By having clear plans to generate more income from current customers, it helps alleviate the pressure and necessity to always bring in new customers.

On day one I was tasked with doubling online sales within six months. As the business was under private equity management, the pressure was really on to deliver results quickly.

DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / BUSINESS PARTNER NEWS /dorsetchamber @DorsetChamber22 October 2022 | Dorset Business Focus /company/dorset-chamber/

The preparation should not only include the purchase of new school supplies and books; today, an essential part is and should be digital security and privacy. We may sometimes omit this, but unfortunately, the back-to-school season offers an excellent opening for phishing, ransomware and other scams to deceive our children and us.

• Adware detector – identifies and removes apps that display ads unexpectedly

Whether you are a parent, a teacher or a child, your phone is a powerful tool. It is a great tool to keep in contact and stay on top of assignments and other school activities. But it is also a tool for malicious actors to invade your privacy and security. Keeping it safe is, therefore, critical in ensuring a smooth and secure back-to-school transition.

A great way to start is with ESET Mobile Security on your Android mobile devices. It is a solution that ensures security against many mobile threats while securing users’ data.

• Security audit – checks an app’s permissions

• Payment protection – lets you shop and bank safely online

• Back up your data regularly

During lockdown we realised that the only way we could engage with our football community was through the power of social media. We had to find new innovative ways to reach out to fans young and old with innovative ideas and by using established platforms.

A lot of consideration is rightly given to PPE workwear that is issued to protect your employees. Very little thought is current given to what protects the employer – who’s corporate brand identity is on workwear – when the uniform is no longer fit for purpose and is destined for landfill?

If you’re looking for a supplier to protect you, your workforce and the planet, then contact me.

How toMediaSocialhashelpedgrowourClub

Our most successful foray and by far the most watched was when Harry Redknapp came to support our super fan Josh Faramus as he cycled his go cart around Slades Farm to raise funds for the club during lockdown. Josh became an overnight sensation and we soon realised just how powerful our Social Media really was. We haven’t really looked back. Chloe Larby our then Social Media Manageress quickly helped us reach over 5K Facebook, 12K Twitter and 2k Instagram followers. Our website now gets over 1,600 page views per week more than any other team in our league. We even re-launched our YouTube channel sending more games than ever before into our fans’ homes. This season we are concentrating our efforts on reaching our younger fans. In 2018 with the help of Richard Gale of Gales Homes and Investments we launched our PTFC Kids Initiative offering free coaching to children who may not have previously been able to afford it. We understand that the future of our game is in grassroots football and that we should leave no stone unturned looking for the next Marcus Rashford but it’s also about just getting kids into sport; kids who might otherwise have been left out, with our tagline “Fitter, healthier and happier. “

This season we will be taking our Social Media output to a new level, with the help of rising star Jack Pyne, at the Football Shirt Framing Service. Jack has agreed to help us launch PTFC Kids onto Tick Tock, opening the door to a new way of interacting with existing young fans and encouraging new ones. We’d like to thank Grahame Gibson at Jade-Aden for sponsoring this year’s PTFC Kids Initiative.

We are hoping to work with media students at Bournemouth University to help us with a number of projects which would include the other football activities, youth football, academy football, ladies’ football and the walking football for the older generation. | www.ptfckids.co.uk

Did you know that 90% of UK professional clothing goes into landfill? And less than 1% of this is reused to make new textiles. This is because unlike normal clothing, it can’t go to a charity shop, and listing on online marketplaces poses a security risk. But that doesn’t mean it should go in the nearest bin.

Remember, recruiting short-term or long-term workers is a game of fine margins. Be flexible and willing to adapt, or risk being left behind your competition.

Finding an expert recruiter/agency partner will definitely help accelerate your route to success. Navigating the ever changing market can be tedious and time consuming. Your preferred agent will provide you options, solutions and feedback on the labour accessibility. Don’t lose your precious time, allow seasoned professionals to take care of it for you. If you are a business on the hunt for temporary workers, focusing on company culture and image, working conditions, rates of pay and company benefits are all things that will increase your attraction and retention of staff. With competition so high, salary is always going to be the first way to grab people’s attention. However, maintaining loyalty to your business comes with the other components mentioned above. Think of it like this, you can interest a romantic partner with a physical attraction, but you can maintain their loyalty with your personality and ethics.

With the holiday season coming to a close and winter looming, the soaring costs will create a ‘perfect storm’ that could hit some sectors harder than the Covid lockdowns did.

“We are coming out of the summer season and energy use will rise as temperatures dip – it is a perfect storm.

“We urge the new prime minister to make this their number one priority or we could be facing a winter of disconnecting.

“The government must also look at a long term solution enabling us to be energy self-sufficient.”

Spiralling energy costs will lead to a winter of disconnecting

Its chairman Paul Clarke, who is also a hotelier, said: “Just as we were starting to get back to normal after the Covid lockdowns we are faced with something more damaging to business.

“It is especially hard on hospitality and retailers because they were so affected in the town throughout the pandemic.

Given the changes we’ve experienced over the past 12 months and the decline in availability of labour across the vast majority of sectors, finding the right balance between offering an appealing opportunity and an unattractive one is closer than ever. The Recruitment & Employment Confederation this month reported a further downturn in temporary availability, factor in the tremendous availability of permanent roles and your window for success is even smaller. So, what’s the answer?

The Coastal BID is urging the government to intervene or face collapsing companies and increasing joblessness.

Mploy Staffing www.mploystaff.comSolutionsLawofattraction?Gettingyourtemporaryworkforcebeforethecompetition

“Energy costs have spiralled and are now so great they simply wipe out profits and make businesses unsustainable.

Yep, it’s a question that has long been asked around boardrooms across the country. How do we attract, satisfy and retain staff? Now, imagine trying to provide the same principles to seasonal or temporary workers… Tricky one, right?

“Businesses are seeing energy costs rise by tens – or even hundreds – of thousands of pounds. It is totally unsustainable.

“With other BIDs we are actively lobbying the government to do something now. After all it is in their interests to have viable businesses paying taxes.

Paul Clarke, Chairman at Bournemouth Coastal BID

Bournemouth Coastal BID is warning that surging energy costs could lead to the closure of businesses and hit the town’s tourist industry, causing irreparable harm.

“We are seeing pubs close daily and retail and hospitality businesses are teetering on the edge of a debt-created precipice.

The League of Mercy was re-founded as a UK registered charity in 1999. Its current trustees, all of whom have a wide range of experience in charitable voluntary work in various health areas, undertook its renewal as a personal Millennium project.

The League of Mercy is a charity dedicated to honouring and recognising the incredible work of volunteers. ‘They deserve a medal’ is something they often say of those wonderful volunteers who have served their organisations and communities outstandingly.

The League of Mercy was founded on 30 March 1899 by Royal Charter of Queen Victoria. It was instigated by the Prince of Wales who became its first Grand President. The object of the league was to establish a large body of voluntary workers who would assist with the maintenance of voluntary hospitals and ‘otherwise relieve sickness and suffering’. When the 1948 National Health Act abolished these hospitals, the league was quietly wound up after performing its task extraordinarily well for nearly half a century.

HMOs have certain requirements which they must meet. One of which, being a valid tenancy. It is also mandatory for all Large HMOs to be licenced. Speak to your local council to find out whether this is the case, and to attain a licence.

There are many costs involved in setting up and running an HMO. To find out more about these, head to our website www.frettens.co.uk or get in touch using the information below. Email: www.frettens.co.ukPhone:hmartin@frettens.co.uk01202499255

For small HMOs, you generally don’t need planning permission. However, ‘large HMOs’ are likely to require permission. Many councils are implementing Article 4 Directions which will mean if you are changing the use of the property from a residential dwelling into an HMO, you must obtain planning permission. Planning permission can also be applied for through your local council.

As part of the licensing process, you will need to ensure that the bedrooms are of a certain size. The minimum bedroom sizes for HMOs are as follows:

“In early 1992 my wife saw an advert in the Daily Echo. Early retirement had become a little boring and I missed the 3 P’s (People, Purpose and Pattern). Lewis-Manning Hospice Care provided all three and I have thoroughly enjoyed the last 30 years and the contribution I have made to this worthwhile charity.”

HMO stands for Houses in Multiple Occupation. An HMO is a property that is rented out by at least 3 tenants who are not from the same household but share ‘facilities’ such as the bathroom and kitchen. If the above is true, yet at least five tenants occupy the property, then it is known as a ‘large HMO’.

• A bedroom occupied with one adult - 6.51 M2

Clare Gallie, chief executive at LewisManning added: “Robin is a true inspiration and really deserved this amazing award. We quite simply wouldn’t be able to run the hospice without people like Robin, who always go that extra mile for their community. Robin has dedicated so many years to Lewis-Manning and we are thrilled that the League of Mercy has recognised this fantastic achievement of Robin’s. Covid restrictions saw a new initiative from the award scheme to ensure the participants were able to continue with the award.

Is it too late to start saving for retirement?

Under the expert coordination of Chris Bonfield and his volunteer instructors, all three levels, Bronze, Silver, and Gold, can be undertaken. If cadets wish, they can even do all the individual sections.

Reaching retirement age is not an ending, it’s the start of a new chapter in life. Putting the right plan in place with the help of a financial adviser, will help ensure you can enjoy the future you want.

Many cadets leave the unit with all three of these awards under their belt.

Retirement has changed substantially from what it was for previous generations. It used to be the norm to spend a 30year career in one profession, often with one or two employers, and for people to stop working entirely once they reached retirement age, which was usually around 60 to 65 years old. Now average UK life expectancy figures from the ONS, show that you could spend 25 to 30+ years of your life in retirement.

It’s difficult to say how much money you need before you stop work, because it really depends on what you want to do. Many people fund their retirement from a range of sources, including property, Cash ISA savings, Stocks & Shares ISAs, earnings, state pension and private pension pots.

One of the core elements of the experience offered by Poole Sea Cadets is the opportunity to take part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.

To receive a complimentary guide covering wealth management, retirement planning or inheritance tax planning, contact Peter Harding Wealth Management on 01202 830730 or email peterhardingwm@sjpp.co.uk.

Chris said: “I always hope they will do this, but only 10% have the motivation and possibly the time to. But those that do are rewarded with an invitation to Buckingham Palace.”

income. But is it ever too late to start saving? The answer is no, and this isn’t just a Pollyanna response from a pension’s expert.

Why is a Duke of Edinburgh Award so well received? In the wider world of education and employment such a qualification illustrates in an individual a willingness to undertake extra-curricular activities which bestow skills such as communication, commitment, leadership, and teamwork.

If a cadet is going on to either colleges, universities, or employment, a Duke of Edinburgh award gives them an edge over others as well as confidence. It is said that many employers will guarantee an interview to a Gold award holder.

In recent months, Poole Sea Cadets undertaking their Gold award have been out on the river Thames rowing from Henley to Reading and back to Hambledon. Others, taking part in their Silver and Bronze awards, undertook an overnight expedition in the New Forest. Sleeping under the stars and then cooking breakfast the next morning

“My team and I,” Chris said: “derive great pleasure in guiding young people through the different stages of the award, including the expedition section. We try to take them to different locations which they wouldn’t normally visit. Hence rowing on the Thames and previously expeditions on Dartmoor, the Brecon Beacons, and Peaks.

Chris said: “The biggest challenge ahead to enable completions is to provide sufficient expedition opportunities. Here in the Sea Cadet’s Wessex District, we have trained a great team of staff who are qualified to supervise expeditions, but elsewhere this expertise can be lacking. We do try to help, and our most recent July expedition attracted cadets from as far away as Banbury, Milton Keynes, Ashford Kent, Medway, and Crawley, and as an additional gesture, Poole Unit accommodated most of them the night before.”

Being a little inventive, cadets could, for the first time, undertake most of the award at home. Naturally the expedition had to wait for Covid restrictions to be lifted. If it hadn’t been for this, cadets would never have caught up.

Since Covid, interest in the DofE award has gone from strength to strength, not just in Poole, but amongst Sea Cadets generally throughout the Southern Area.

• Improved communication

Although it is important for individuals to take control of their digital wellbeing, they may not always have the opportunity or the ability to manage the impact of technologies or digital services on their lives. For example, in employment contexts where staff may not be able to make changes, or in personal contexts where individuals may not have access to, or be included in, digital opportunities that could have a positive effect on their lives. It is also important to remember that individuals may not have the support or capacity to counteract negative effects of technologies.

• Managers should consider the impact of digital workload within staff appraisals, performance management and continuing professional development (CPD) activities

For example, at LA we encourage our staff to be aware of their own wellbeing, with initiatives centred on our employees. We hold a weekly meditation session available to all, we have trained Mental Health First Aiders and a range of employee benefits that incorporate wellbeing. We hold ‘wellbeing weeks’, featuring topics such as the menopause, men’s health and physical health and wellbeing. We also provide additional days off, such as birthdays and team CSR days. But we know that sometimes just ensuring we get away from our screens regularly, take annual leave throughout the year and enjoy our lunch breaks away from our desks where possible will benefit us too.

• Tools to manage workload

Remote access capability has been at the top of many business agendas over the last 2 years. With more employees working remotely and an increased interest in hybrid working arrangements, it is even more important to ensure your staff are looked after whether they are in the office or working elsewhere – ‘out of sight’ should never mean ‘out of mind’ when it comes to your employees’ wellbeing. Managers need to ensure they are aware of the hours their team members are working, and that they set appropriate guidelines around workloads and unnecessary out of hours contact. It is equally important to keep in regular contact with home-based and remote employees to ensure a healthy and productive environment is maintained wherever the location.

It is important to take stock to assess your digital wellbeing

There is also the societal or organisational perspective whereby providers of digital systems, services and content have a responsibility for ensuring that these are well managed, supported, accessible and equitable. They also need to empower and build capability in users so that all who engage with them are equipped to do so in a way that supports and/or improves their wellbeing.

• Understand your own digital preferences and needs, including any mental or physical health challenges that can affect technology use

There are numerous benefits to digital technology that have transformed our world, but it is important to acknowledge that it can also have a detrimental impact on people’s lives, therefore it is important to continually assess our digital wellbeing.

Ways to positively enhance your digital experience in the workplace

There is the individual perspective which is within a personal or work context. This involves identifying and understanding both the positive benefits and any potential negative aspects of engaging with digital activities and being aware of ways to manage and control these to improve wellbeing.

• Create and manage a positive digital identity (professionally and personally) and be mindful of your digital footprint

Emma Starmer, Senior Employment Law and HR Advisor Lester Aldridge

Digital wellbeing is a term used to describe the impact of technologies and digital services on people’s mental, physical, social and emotional health. It is a complex concept that can be viewed from a variety of perspectives and across different contexts and situations.

• Consider the impact of digital activities on your own health and take steps to avoid bad practices, such as observing good posture, taking regular screen breaks, adjusting monitor brightness, making sure you get enough sleep and avoiding addictive behaviours

• Although technology can help to improve efficiency it can also create unrealistic expectations that support will be available 24:7 resulting in undue stress

Taylor Wilson, project manager at b4b, worked closely with Simon throughout the app build. He said, “I led the build of the app from start to finish and it’s been a career highlight for sure. This app is going to make a real difference to people’s lives, and Simon has been fantastic to work with. We spent hours bouncing ideas around and discussing how the app would look and work. When we sent him the finished prototype he called me back within minutes to say he loved it!”

Project Manager at b4b

Simon says the idea for the app came about when he went out for dinner for the first time since his rehabilitation. When he arrived, there were people sitting in front of the disabled entrance and getting in caused “quite a fuss”. During the meal, he then found that the disabled toilets were only accessible via a flight of stairs. Before he became a wheelchair user, he says he’d never given accessibility much thought.

trustworthy source of information about venues that will be able to accommodate their needs.”

This experience prompted some research, and the app was born out of his general frustration with how hard it was to find information about venue accessibility.

During the design process, it was also important to consider the accessibility of the app itself. Taylor explained: “Our UX designer researched fonts to find the one that has consistently been named the easiest to read. We also limited the use of red and green for users who may have colour-blindness.”

A new app called Snowball, developed by Dorset-based software agency b4b, is set to become the go-to app for disabled users looking for accessible restaurants, shops, and other services.

Simon has been a well-respected voice within the disabled community for many years, as the founder of successful blog and Facebook page, Ability Access, as well as being one of the presenters of the hugely successful Grumpy Gits podcast.

Making sure the app was user-friendly was an ongoing and collaborative process between Simon and the developers, and involved plenty of testing. The end result is not only clean and easy to navigate, but also features a whole host of useful functionality.

Snowball, described as a “rolling review of accessibility”, gives people the confidence to go out and enjoy themselves without worrying about accessibility issues.

The app is the brainchild of former adult social care worker Simon Sansome, who became a wheelchair user in 2014 after sustaining a life-changing injury.

DORSET BUSINESS FOCUS / NEWS 40 October 2022 | Dorset Business Focus /dorsetchamber @DorsetChamber/company/dorset-chamber/

“Short of looking up local guides (which might be out of date) or going on each venue’s website (time consuming), it’s not that easy to find out where is accessible in the local area. The idea behind Snowball is that all the information is in one easy place and – importantly – is compiled by other disabled users. Working in much the same way as Tripadvisor, it gives people a

Similar to Tripadvisor, users can view places (this includes everything from hairdressers and restaurants to shops, leisure attractions and more), post their own photos and reviews, include a rating and whether they’d return, and even add new places that aren’t already listed. They can also use the pin map feature to explore what’s available in their local area.

“It’s unbelievable to me that nearly half of the places we reviewed in our focus town are unable to accommodate disabled visitors. Hopefully we can shine a light on accessibility and bring about change for good.”   www.b4b.co.uk

After a focus group researched venues in Loughborough and recorded their findings in the app – an activity which Simon has dubbed “snowballing” – it was found that a staggering 48per cent of places in the town were marked as inaccessible, with people “unlikely to return”. Community groups and local councils are going to start snowballing other areas, and Simon says he hopes the findings will prompt positive change.

New app developed by b4b set to be “Tripadvisor for accessibility”

A aohabitation agreement (or ‘living together arrangement’) is a document that details all the financial and living arrangements, for both the present and future, between you and your partner.

Do cohabiting couples have rights? For unmarried couples, simply living in the same home does not give you the same rights as a person who is married or in a civil partnership. In the eyes of the law, you are not ‘bound together’.

Cohabitation agreements

If properly drafted and prepared in the correct way, then yes – a cohabitation agreement will be legally binding.

There are a couple of ways that a couple can protect their finances and property if they aren’t married. One being a declaration of trust, the other being a cohabitation agreement.

Cohabitation agreements can be used to protect a couple’s assets and clear up any uncertainty regarding shared assets in separation.

For this reason, there may be some uncertainty regarding shared assets as to who would get what if you were to separate. This could, in turn, give rise to claims and difficult disputes.

Dorset Chamber is well placed to deliver this change in policy as the leading employer representative body in the county.

Nicola Newman, former chief executive of careers, employability and mentoring charity Ansbury Guidance, will lead the LSIP programme for the chamber.

“Employers now have a great opportunity to be directly involved in problem solving at least some of their current issues.”

“Our role will continue for a further two years to monitor and measure the impact of the changes made.

“There will be a strong focus on partnership working to maximise business engagement within the LSIP review, working closely with other business support organisations.”

Dorset Chamber has been handpicked by the government to lead a major review aimed at boosting business skills in the county.

Following the submission of a successful proposal, the chamber was commissioned by the Department for Education to lead the rapid development of the Local Skills Improvement Plan (LSIP).

ESG is essentially a set of principles by which a business’ accountability and transparency as well as its impact on society and the environment is measured. This is becoming an increasingly important issue and something we encourage all businesses to consider. As investors become increasingly ethically aware, businesses need to increasingly demonstrate their commitment to the principles of ESG. As businesses recruit and effectively market themselves when recruiting, potential employees are placing greater focus on working for a socially responsible business. At a time when the true impact of climate change is becoming clear, businesses need to act responsibly and do all they can to reduce their carbon footprint.
