Dear Readers!

What’s your New Year’s resolution?

I know, I know. You’re probably sick of that question! And even if you do pick one, many of us will drop it by February… or earlier.

But resolutions are a nice tradition, inviting us to think about what we’d like to change or start doing in our lives.

My resolution last year was to drink more water. I aimed to pour a glass at my work desk first thing every day, to help me stay hydrated. I must confess I didn’t stick to the habit but managed it on most days.

This year, I have two resolutions. One is to get more sleep by going to bed earlier (you can read more about this in our New Year, New You section on pages 28 to 33). The other is to put myself out there more and try new things. As part of this resolution, I’ve signed up to perform in ‘Shrek the Musical’ with Wimborne Musical Society.

You can come and see me perform in the ensemble in June.

We’ve also been thinking about what resolutions we can make for this magazine. One is to do more to support the local art scene in 2026, and so we are going to publish a series of profiles on creatives from the region. You can read the first one with Bournemouth-based artist and clothes designer Tom Hannibal on page 42.

We also have our first column from our new charity of the year: Julia’s House. Read about how the hospice has helped Skye Kotze and her family on page 36.

Whatever your resolution, I wish you luck with it this year.

Remember, it’s not a sprint, but a marathon, so take your time with it.

What a load of rubbish A suspected battery fire forced a bin lorry to dump rubbish on Wimborne Minster High Street in early December.

On Monday 1 December, binmen noticed smoke coming from the back of their waste vehicle and quickly dumped its contents to avoid damage to the truck.

Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service closed the road and extinguished the fire. The street was then fully cleaned and swept.

Dorset Council Waste Services is reminding residents about the dangers of throwing away batteries in their regular bins.

It said: “The cause of the fire is undetermined, but it’s quite likely to have been started by a crushed battery.

“Please remember batteries of any kind should never be placed in any bins — always use a battery bag for kerbside collection or take your batteries to a household recycling centre or battery dropoff point.”

Old batteries should be placed in a clear plastic bag and left by the recycling bin ready for collection. Batteries can also be recycled at most supermarkets.

Pulford Publicity donates £650 to Dorset Cancer Care Foundation Taking place between 1–24 December, Christchurch Living Advent Calendar attracted a huge number of sponsors for the 24 events that took place in the town in the run-up to Christmas, raising money for a different charity each night.

On 14 December, Pulford Publicity sponsored the evening to the tune of £650. Mad4Dance performed at their studio in Bargates, and the charity being supported was Dorset Cancer Care Foundation.

Ben Pulford, managing director of Pulford Publicity (the publisher of this magazine), said: “Dorset Cancer Care Foundation was our charity of the year for 2025, so this was a perfect opportunity for our company to get involved and make a donation to round off our year of support.

“Mad4Dance put on a great show, and I would like to thank them for hosting the evening.”

After the performance, Ben presented a cheque for £650 to Emily Griffiths, charity manager of Dorset Cancer Care Foundation.

She praised Pulford Publicity, calling their support “amazing”, not only for their monetary sponsorship, but also for producing the free programme which promoted the Christchurch Living Advent Calendar.

A raffle on the night raised over £100 for the charity.

Cost of new town councils revealed

Residents celebrate the status

Village Green Status cheer Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP) Council for Wimborne residents have revealed how much new town councils will cost to set up and how much Council Tax will rise for residents of these areas The council is aiming for the new Broadstone Town Council, Bournemouth Town Council and Poole Town Council to be launched and operational by 1 April 2026.

According to a BCP Council report, the estimated Council Tax charges for a Band D property in these areas will be: • Broadstone Town Council, £60.41 per year, or £5.03 per month • Poole Town Council, £32.59 per year, or £2.72 per month • Bournemouth Town Council, £29.51 per year, or £2.46 per month Based on these figures, the new town councils will collect: Broadstone Town Council, £296,560; Poole Town Council, £1,896,970; and Bournemouth Town Council, £1,981,980.

The three new councils will set their own budgets and priorities and will provide and maintain amenities like parks, playgrounds, and community centres, as well as services like street cleaning, lighting and local events.

Plans for the new town councils have proven controversial, with many residents objecting to the initial plans, but BCP Council is proceeding with the proposals.

Cllr Millie Earl, leader of BCP Council, said: “We know people want more community events and festivals, improvements to high streets, more Christmas lights, and more activities for young people.

Town and parish councils will enable communities to do this.”

Residents of Birchdale Road, in the Highland Park Estate in Wimborne Minster, are celebrating following the decision by Dorset Council’s Strategic and Technical Planning Committee that the larger area at the end of their cul-de-sac should be granted Town Village Green Status.

This means that the area is legally protected from development and must remain open for local people to use for sports, pastimes and recreation. The land cannot be built on unless its status is changed through a specific legal process.

For some time, residents have been fighting against development on the adjacent Leigh Farm, for which access would have to be through Birchdale Road.

An outline application for 55 homes has been refused on four occasions, with an application in January 2024 receiving more than 500 local objections.

Residents argue that the site, which is now owned by Nightingale Land, is a green lung between Wimborne and Colehill.

The residents’ victory is tinged with a little sadness as the Town Village Green Status doesn’t include the abutting smaller strip of land. This does mean that if an application for housing was successful, access could still be gained from Birchdale Road.

Resident Jill Whitfield, who applied for the status in July 2024, said: “The result is brilliant, but we do still have a battle on our hands as the Draft Dorset Local Plan identified Leigh Farm for a possible 150 homes.”

Christmas parade delights crowds In brilliant sunshine, hundreds of people lined the streets of Wimborne Minster on Saturday 13 December for the ever popular Save the Children Christmas parade, which featured local community groups and schoolchildren proceeding through the town on foot or in decorated vehicles. Participants handed out free sweets to onlookers.

Ahead of this colourful event, there was a wide variety of entertainment in the town.

Founder of youth orchestra receives award Violinist Jack Maguire, the founder of the Boscombe Youth Fiddle Orchestra, was presented with the High Sheriff of Dorset’s Special Award on Saturday 22 November.

Originally called the Coda Fiddle Orchestra, Maguire set up the project in 2004 to provide high-quality string education for children and young people.

Boscombe. It was attended by Bournemouth’s Mayor Jackie Edwards, the Bournemouth East MP Tom Hayes, supporters of the BYFO and members of the orchestra and their families.

Labour MP Tom Hayes said: “This orchestra has given so many young people confidence, community, and the joy of music, and it was wonderful to see that recognised.”

Bremner praised Maguire’s “transformative impact on the lives of countless young people,” enabling those from financially disadvantaged backgrounds “to have access to music education, giving them a sense of belonging and the confidence to thrive.”

Now 75, Maguire, who was formally deputy leader of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, has stepped back as director of the BYFO, passing the responsibility to his wife, violinist Fiona McKinley.

In August, Christchurch and Boscombe & Southbourne Rotary clubs organised a river pageant on the River Stour. Thanks to the generous support of the local business community, public donations on the day and online contributions, the pageant raised £2,835 for three local charities: the Bourne Water Dragons and the Pink Champagne cancer survivor charities, and Hengistbury Head Outdoors. Have your say on the future of policing in Dorset

By David Sidwick | Dorset Police and Crime Commissioner I have now launched my annual precept survey, and I’m asking residents across Dorset to share their views on the policing element of Council Tax for the year ahead. As your Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC), one of my key responsibilities is setting the police budget; your feedback plays an essential role in helping me make the best and most informed decision for our county.

Asking people how much more they would be prepared to contribute towards policing is never something I take lightly. I know many households are feeling the strain, and I share your frustration. This is why I have been relentlessly lobbying the government for a change to the national funding formula since I became PCC in 2021. This change is urgently needed to provide Dorset Police with the funding it requires — and deserves.

At present, the funding formula utterly fails to reflect the reality of our county: a rural area impacted by seasonality which brings challenges and pressures that differ significantly from other forces.

Dorset residents fund 52 per cent of the policing budget through Council Tax, whereas across England and Wales, the average is around 35 per cent, and in some areas as low as 20 per cent.

Dorset also receives the second lowest proportion of national police funding of any force, and the funding we do receive does not keep pace with inflation, mandatory pay increases, or the growing costs of modern policing.

But despite years of lobbying and campaigning, the government has decided to continue with this formula, signalling that forces are expected to rely more heavily on local precepts. While I will continue pushing for change, I also have a duty to ensure Dorset Police can continue to keep our communities safe.

That means asking residents how much more they would be willing to pay.

I want to reassure you that Dorset remains a safe county — currently the eighth safest in England and Wales. Crime continues to fall, outcomes for victims are improving, 92 per cent of 999 calls are answered within 10 seconds, and positive burglary outcomes have risen significantly.

Anti-social behaviour and knife crime continue to fall, with Dorset the fourth lowest county for knife offences. Dorset Police’s award-winning Rural Crime Team continue to achieve fantastic results including the recovery of a digger from Poland, a

caravan from Germany, and a tractor from Hampshire. These are achievements we can all be proud of, especially given the financial pressures the force faces.

The survey provides three options, including the potential maximum amount PCCs may be able to ask for: £14 per year. There are two other hypothetical amounts set in the survey, both likely to be above the precept limit: £20 and £26 per year, which is the amount needed to balance the budget and allow for some investment to be made in policing. Choosing one of these options would enable me to continue to push the government for a better, fairer deal for Dorset.

Bournemouth MP welcomes cutting Police and Crime Commissioners In November, the government announced plans to abolish the role of elected Police and Crime Commissioners (PCCs) by 2028 in order to save £100m and fund 320 extra police constables.

Jessica Toale, the Labour MP for Bournemouth West, welcomed the plans, although she called for changes to the police funding formula so it is fairer.

Speaking in Parliament on Thursday 13

November, Toale praised the work of Dorset PCC David Sidwick, saying they had worked well together across party lines and that she recognised his commitment to the local area.

She then called on the police minister to change the police funding formula, which she says fails Dorset in two ways.

Toale said: “PCCs were introduced as an experiment, but public understanding

has remained incredibly low. Cutting this bureaucracy and reinvesting the savings into frontline officers is the right decision.

“But we also need to fix the broken funding formula. Bournemouth faces unique pressures every summer when millions of visitors arrive, and our police need the resources to cope with that demand. I’ll keep making that case in Parliament until we get a fairer deal for Dorset.”

Mayor’s Musings There are exciting things planned for Wimborne in 2026 Wimborne Minster has been awarded the title of Dorset’s Town of Culture for 2026, with the theme ‘Bridging the Past and Future’ focusing on community engagement and cultural innovation.

The town was selected after a competitive process involving four shortlisted towns. This designation comes with a £30,000 cash prize, which will be matched by the town council, allowing for a year-long programme of cultural and community events. The council is also applying for various grants and sponsorship.

The theme aims to combine the town’s rich heritage with innovative technologies, creating a diverse range of

events that appeal to residents and visitors of all ages. The year-long programme will focus on improving access to culture for everyone, reaching beyond the town centre into new housing areas. It will feature a mix of traditional and interactive experiences, including cultural festivals that celebrate our local heritage, public art installations that incorporate modern technology, and digital experiences that engage the community in new ways.

Fixing the roof while the sun is shining

This is always such a special time of the year, and life at Wimborne Community Garden certainly seems to bear this out.

Some time ago, we were not only given a great deal of lovely slate roof tiles from Mr and Mrs Brian Stannah, but he also organised for them to be delivered to the garden in readiness for our volunteer, David, to roof our new pergola.

However, there were so many slates that we realised we could also re-tile the roof of the pavilion (our large wooden shed). As it had begun to leak, this was extremely good news. The problem then was getting up to the roof safely.

Again, magic happened when we approached the scaffolding company ATM in Poole, as they not only came and set the system up

for us, but Tom Olliver also insisted on doing so free of charge. How amazing, how magical, how generous! We are such a blessed garden.

We know that in the New Year, our wild area is going to be changed, and in it sits our pond. Mindful that it is better to move a pond during winter rather than spring, we set about organising this procedure. Well, yet again we were so lucky when a team of wonderful staff from Ageas Insurance came to the garden to volunteer their time and energy and set about digging a large hole in readiness for the pond’s new placement.

They worked so hard, and we were extremely grateful to each and every one of them.

Next, our own fantastic team of volunteers stepped in.

With so much wonderful support surrounding us, we go forward into 2026 full of enthusiasm and gratitude.

Hundreds filled Wimborne Square on Saturday 29 November for the switching on of the town’s festive lights, with people commenting that it was busier than ever Residents and visitors enjoyed a packed programme of performances throughout the afternoon, featuring a variety of talented local acts which brought music, entertainment, and Christmas spirit to the heart of Wimborne Minster. Performers included local choirs and dance groups, and an entry from The Quarterjacks of Wimborne Marching Band.

from families and visitors of all ages.

The lights were switched on by the Mayor of Wimborne, Cllr Jeff Hart, helped by winners of the children’s poster competition.

Speaking after the event, organisers Wimborne Minster Town Council said: “Wimborne Minster once again showed its incredible community spirit. We are so grateful to all the performers, SLICK Events, and every volunteer who made today such a memorable occasion.

The atmosphere was truly magical.”

Poole eyebrow expert officially third best in the world The hard work and dedication of a Poole-based permanent makeup artist has paid off after she was placed third in the Grand Final of the WORLDS Permanent Makeup (PMU) Championship, an international competition held in Cyprus.

Emily Moore specialises in PMU and microblading — a process for creating natural-looking eyebrows.

She qualified in 2019 and started her business in late 2020. In 2024, she opened The Brow Haus and Co in Poole Old Town (which won silver in the new business category of the Poole Business Awards in July 2025).

As a challenge, she entered the microblading category of the WORLDS Championship.

Emily won first place at the UK competition in Manchester on 14 September and was invited to compete in the finals against all the first-place winners from 19 other countries, finishing in third place.

How does she feel about her huge achievement?

“I am elated!” said Emily.

“I struggle with anxiety and self-belief, so I nearly didn’t compete. It’s a real testament to place third in the world and assured me all my hard work and dedication to my craft is worth it — even the times of self-doubt and thoughts to give it all up.”

“There’s a possibility I will,” she revealed. “I really enjoyed the energy and experience, but I may return as a judge.

£80,000 in grants to help residents this winter A total of 23 groups across Dorset have received funding to help people on low incomes with food vouchers, community meals, cookery workshops and money advice sessions.

Dorset Community Foundation and BCP Council are providing grants totalling £80,000 using money from the Department for Work and Pensions’ Household Support Fund. The grants will support projects running to the end of March.

Creative writing project for people living with dementia 2026 will see the Bournemouth Writing Festival launching a free creative writing project for people in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole who are living with dementia.

‘Recollections’ is a gentle, welcoming writing project delivered in partnership with Tricuro Cares and Bournemouth University, and supported

by Prama, the Dorset charity championing older people and carers. The programme includes a series of free in-person workshops in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole, as well as a free downloadable home-writing pack for carers to use if unable to attend in person.

Designed to spark connection, creativity and confidence, each workshop offers a warm and friendly space where participants can explore memories and imagination at their own pace — with plenty of tea, cake, and conversation.

The project culminates in a special public celebration at the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum on Sunday 26 April from 10am, featuring free drop-in sessions for people with dementia and early-stage dementia, a display of writing created in the workshops or sent in from home, and PramaLife specialists available for anyone seeking advice or support.

Supporting Dorset mums’ return to work

For women who were in full-time employment before having a baby, 34 per cent do not return to work within one year of giving birth, according to a 2019 Government Equalities Office report The reasons for this high figure vary, but they commonly include the cost of childcare and the desire to be at home with their child.

But what happens when these mums do decide they want to go back to work, as the majority do? Most mothers in this situation return to a new employer, often on a part-time basis, as they try to balance their home and work commitments in a way that works for them and their families.

Research conducted in Italy, Norway and the UK identified the following as the main challenges women encounter when they do return to work after one or more years: • Feelings of sadness and guilt linked to no longer

being a full-time mum.

• Planning and managing childcare.

• Deciding what type of role to pursue.

• Significant loss of confidence in their abilities, including imposter syndrome.

• Difficulty in managing a change in identity from worker to parent to working parent.

• Lack of employer support.

In my experience, these challenges are felt by mums contemplating a return to work, actively looking for a new role, and who are back at work but struggling to balance work and home life.

my clients address these challenges include: Be kind to yourself. Accept that this journey may have complex phases and will take time. Know that all mums in this position will be addressing their own challenges.

Update or create your LinkedIn profile. Ensure you have a good narrative in your mind about your time off and your readiness to return to employment.

Research any local groups set up to support women returning to work. Talk with others who share your concerns to help reduce your anxiety.

Talk with someone experienced and qualified to help. A coaching psychologist can help during this transition period to fully explore your

feelings about returning to work and to help you navigate each step of the process.

Despite the challenges highlighted, remember that the rewards are significant: research shows there are important psychological gains associated with returning to work after a career break. So, focus on your end goals, recognise that you are not alone and seek out support from others.

Dorset charity builds ‘refreshing’ new garden A local charity has used a grant from the makers of Refreshers sweets to ‘refresh’ the outdoor space at its Poole support centre.

STARS Dorset provides specialist support to people throughout the county who have experienced sexual violence and trauma. In November, it announced it had received a £1,000 grant from British sweet maker Swizzels as

part of its Great Community Refresh competition.

Launched to celebrate 70 years of Swizzels’ Refreshers sweets, the nationwide competition attracted over 1,500 entries from individuals and organisations seeking support to revitalise community projects and spaces.

STARS was chosen as one of only seven winners and has used the grant to transform the courtyard at its Poole centre into a welcoming, therapeutic garden. The charity will use the space to start a gardening group to offer survivors the

wellbeing benefits of gardening.

The garden features new furniture, a fishpond, planters, flowers, and a water butt to collect rainwater for watering the plants. Several clients are contributing to the garden by providing painted stones to brighten the space.

Adam Dennett, fundraising and compliance assistant at STARS, said: “As we continue on our mission to support people on their journey to recovery, we’re grateful to receive this grant from Swizzels. Funding like this is a massive lifeline for charities like ours; without it, we wouldn’t have been able to refresh our outdoor space.

“We’re always searching for new ways to provide tailored support for our clients, and a gardening club is the perfect way for them to make new connections, engage in therapeutic activities, and take pride in their achievements.”

Video marks 90 years of hospital help To mark its 90th anniversary, the Friends of Victoria Hospital Wimborne has produced a short film showcasing its on-going partnership with the NHS and Victoria Hospital The Friends group was established in 1935 to generate extra funds and enhance what could be offered at the Victoria Road site.

Over the past 25 years, the group has funded around 80 per cent of the hospital’s capital build projects, investing more than £8.7 million to enhance and expand its facilities.

Most recently, the Friends bought the one-acre site of the former Wimborne

Town FC ground next to the hospital.

This acquisition will allow for a bigger car park – due to open in 2026 – and future expansion, as the need for local healthcare provision continues to grow.

Anne Salter, chairperson of the Friends, said: “We work in support of and collaboration with the hospital, and we can reach those parts

NHS budgets cannot meet.”

Alex Lister, service director for integrated community services at Dorset HealthCare, said: “The hospital remains very much at the heart of the community, and the support provided by local people and the Friends of Victoria Hospital Wimborne is invaluable.”

Have you chosen a New Year’s resolution yet?

If so, well done. If not, the official New Year’s Resolution Week runs from 1–7 January.

It’s been in existence since 2005, although people have been making resolutions for thousands of years, dating back to Babylonian times.

It’s a known fact that people begin to quit their resolutions before the end of January;

around 43 per cent have given up by February, according to sundried.com. But there’s no need to quit, just be flexible.

I’m living proof of that.

Having disregarded my own advice not to be too ambitious when making a New Year’s resolution, I completed my 2024 pledge 24 months later just before Christmas 2025.

So why did my resolution take so long to complete?

I got involved with home improvements and simply ran out of time in 2024. Instead of thinking I was a failure, I re-ran my resolution for a second year. It was a New Year’s resolution with a difference: a flexible resolution. Sometimes being flexible is all you need to achieve your goal.

Now to reveal my 2024 resolution. I resolved to finish writing and publish a book, but 2024 passed by in the blink of an eye and the resolution got bumped into 2025. It wasn’t until Christmas just gone that I finally achieved it. Whether you’re aged nine or over 99, reading ‘Paws in the Flood’ could be a fun New Year’s resolution for you; good luck with whatever you choose.

New Year path to fitness

Cooking up a storm in 2026

By Ben Woodland A New Year for me usually consists of trying to convince myself that my resolution can last longer than February, but this year, at long last, I am making it my mission. As a 21-year-old, I’m always conscious of what I am eating; my housemates seem to be cooking up five-star meals while I have a very classy bowl of pasta for the fourth night in a row.

I then go to friends’ houses for dinner or back home for meals cooked by Mum and can only feel a slight shame that I could never produce those dishes myself.

This year, I need to retire the air fryer and attempt to make a few meals per week, at the very least. No more cheat meals or giving in to the temptation of Deliveroo, I aim to be making the most mouth-watering dishes that even chefs would be proud of.

I am not aiming for a Michelin star, but there is only so many beans on toast that a man can eat. In 2026, I will attempt to put an end to that and finally start cooking for myself more regularly.

If there is one mantra that we all repeat in January, it is to improve our fitness level.

But how do you know if you are fit?

If you can cope with the physical and mental challenges of daily activities, you are certainly on the path to fitness.

However, there is always room for improvement, particularly after the over-indulgence of the Christmas and New Year period.

Aerobic fitness is the ability of the heart and lungs to use oxygen efficiently during exercise. Think running, swimming, dancing, cycling and brisk walking. The NHS recommends that people should do at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity a week.

The importance of muscle strength can’t be ignored. You can lift weights, use resistance bands, do squats and push-ups — but activities like heavy gardening can also count.

Flexibility can diminish with age, and the best exercises for flexibility come from yoga, Pilates, Tai Chi and stretching. Health professionals believe that improving your flexibility can improve your posture, reduce aches and pains, and lower your risk of injury.

One of the most important things to remember if you want or need to improve your fitness is to embark on an activity you enjoy. If you don’t, you won’t keep it up.

And remember, getting fit is not just for January!

The power of sleep

By Luke Graham Sleep is critical for our mind and body, but many of us don’t get enough.

I certainly don’t. I have a bad habit of staying awake until late, sometimes past midnight, either playing videogames, watching television, or scrolling on my laptop or phone.

That’s despite often getting up at 6am (or earlier)

to look after my children.

This lack of sleep can leave me in a bad mood and irritable. The NHS says a lack of sleep can also cause difficulty concentrating, meaning you might be less productive at work or in your daily life. It can also cause problems in your relationships and social life, and (obviously) leave you feeling tired more of the time.

The NHS recommends adults usually need seven to nine hours of sleep. Clearly, my current schedule of six or fewer hours isn’t doing me any favours.

If you struggle to sleep, the NHS offers some advice.

First, set a good sleep routine, meaning set a time to start winding down and try to go to bed at a set time each evening.

Avoid screens and devices for at least an hour before bed, as the blue light from mobiles, tablets and computers can affect your ability to go to sleep. Instead, try reading, meditation, or listening to a podcast or music.

Diet and exercise can help.

Avoid large meals close to

bedtime, as well as stimulants like coffee. Exercise will help tire your body, but it’s advised to avoid anything too energetic in the 90 minutes before bedtime.

So, for my New Year’s resolution, I will start going to bed earlier and stay up no later than 11pm. Sweet dreams.

We’ve been conditioned to buy our clothes cheaply, imported from overseas or online from giant corporations.

In his talk, Grant reminded the audience how our choices, especially when it comes to cheap, throwaway fashion, can have a significant impact on our communities, our local economy, and the planet.

Instead, if we spent a little more on our clothes, we could buy better quality items that last longer, and by buying from

local shops or from British manufacturers, we support our economy and local community, keeping the high street alive and thriving.

So this year, if you need to replace something in your wardrobe, take a minute to think: can I repair this? If not, how can my purchase be more beneficial to myself and others, without contributing to a culture of fast, disposable fashion?

Buying second-hand also helps prevent clothes going to waste, is more economical, and supports good causes, including local charities like Julia’s House (this magazine’s new charity of the year; read all about them on page 36).

Money makeover The New Year is an excellent time to assess your finances, especially if Christmas proved more expensive than planned Checking your bills and bank balances, and making sure you’re on the best deals, could save you money and set you up for a successful 2026.

First, have a look through your bank statements. Are you spending more than your income each month? If you’re not sure, you can use an online budget planner to track your spending.

If you have savings, how much interest is the account earning?

Shop around to see if you can earn more interest elsewhere.

Some banks will pay you to switch your current account to them.

If you have any debts, it’s usually recommended to pay those off with savings — focus on clearing the debts charging the highest interest first.

Next, check your household bills: gas, electricity, phone, internet, insurance and so on. Use online comparison websites, like moneysupermarket.com or moneysavingexpert.com, to see if switching providers would save you money. If you don’t want to switch, try calling the provider and seeing if you can haggle a cheaper deal.

Then, look at ways to boost your income. For instance, you might have the wrong tax code and will need to contact HMRC to update it to make sure you’re not paying more than you owe. Also, use online tools like moneysavingexpert.entitledto.co.uk to check you are not missing out on claiming benefits you’re entitled to.

Do you have any clutter that you’d like to sell to make spare cash and clear space in your home? Perhaps your New Year’s resolution could be starting your own business or side hustle.

Finally, think about the long term. Are your affairs in order if anything happens to you? A solicitor can help you write a will setting out your final wishes, or create a Lasting Power of Attorney, which lets you appoint someone who can help you make decisions if you lose mental capacity.

When therapy can help you

By Marilyn Barber | newseditor@dorsetview.co.uk You can read so many articles with advice on how to cope with problems such as anxiety, and there are numerous videos on social media offering tips — some of which are less than useless — so how do you know when you really need to seek therapy?

You may need treatment if you’re feeling sad or down all the time, or if you have excessive fears and worries. Other symptoms could include extreme mood changes or finding yourself withdrawing from friends and activities. Low energy, tiredness and problems with sleeping could also need to be addressed.

The NHS advises that counselling can help you deal with difficult emotions such as stress, low mood, worry or anger.

If you’re struggling with life events such as illness or bereavement, or problems in relationships at school or work, talking therapies can help considerably.

Therapy can be done in many ways, including over the phone or online, and on your own, as a couple or family, or in a group.

It is a big step to decide you need therapy, and you don’t need to have a mental health problem to decide that it’s for you.

It can help you to navigate some of the trickier things in life like moving house, changing jobs and improving your habits.

Who do you want to be in 2026?

By Kat Amey, life coach At this time of year, there is this question that bubbles away in the background: who are we going to become this New Year?

In recent years, I’ve found myself asking: why do I need to become a new person every year?

Most of us approach January as if we must dedicate the whole month to self-improvement through fear that if we don’t, the year will be wasted.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the idea of opening my shiny new planner, setting a focus word for the year and some goals alongside this. But does January have a superpower that allows you to fast track into this new version of yourself? I’m not convinced.

I know what you’re thinking. Do I just do nothing and stay as I am? Well, that’s up to you!

I like to begin a New Year by exploring who I want to become (the identity) versus what I want to achieve (the goal). Doing this helps me to focus my thoughts and create goals for the year that align with this new version of myself.

For example, in 2025 I knew that I wanted to become someone who was confident presenting in public, so I set myself a goal of securing in-person workshops. I was asked to offer a journaling talk at a wellness festival and workshops for other events. I’ve become that person who now seeks out these opportunities.

For 2026, I want to share more of my knowledge, so I’ve set myself a goal to start a podcast — and now you’ll have to hold me accountable!

Here are some questions to ask yourself this New Year: • How would I like to feel in 2026? Write down five feeling words.

• How would I like people to describe this version of me?

• What sort of things will I say yes to? And what will I say no to?

• What am I celebrating when 2026 ends?

And an action: choose your focus word for 2026. This is an anchor word that will help guide your decisions and goals. I’ve been doing this practice for about eight years, and I’ve found it extremely helpful as a gentle reminder when I feel like I’ve diverted away from my intended path.

A final reminder to finish on and one I want you to read and read again: you are enough, just as you are.

“It’s great to see so many people out today,” said the Mayor of Ferndown, Cllr Lawrence Wilson before turning on the Christmas lights in Ferndown on 29 November 2025.

The main ‘switch on’ event was organised by Ferndown and Parley Rotary CIO with help from Ferndown Town and Dorset councils. It was also supported by Stuart Fleetham from Xerocad and Ben Pulford from Pulford Publicity, two local business owners who have been involved with Christmas in Ferndown since its inception over 10 years ago.

Live entertainment included Charlotte Geary singing festive songs, and this year Classy Bird’s Christmas artisan food and craft market took place in The Barrington Centre. Santa’s Grotto was also held in The Barrington Centre and was a great success, with elves from local cub and scout groups helping out. Over 100 children were able to see Santa.

With nearly 300 tickets sold for the giant Christmas hamper raffle, the winners were: 1st – Sue Warner, 2nd – Anne Brown, 3rd – Ian Pounds. Money raised from the raffle and sale of mulled wine and mince pies will go to Ferndown Community Support.

Ferndown and Parley Rotary CIO said: “Congratulations to everyone who helped make the day enjoyable to the people of Ferndown. Especially Ferndown and Parley Rotarian, Derrick Powell, who organised the event, despite obstacles being thrown in his way. We have hopefully raised lots of money for charities in the local area.”

The mayor of Ferndown also thanked everyone involved with the events.

Schools invited to apply for cookery grants Following the decision by trustees of Christchurch Food Festival Education Trust (CFFET) to no longer provide healthy eating and cookery workshops directly, local schools are invited to apply for cash grants to carry out projects.

Chairman of the Trustees, Julie Ratcliffe, said: “Schools can apply for grants to support them in arranging their own workshops and projects provided that they meet the Trust’s charitable aims and objectives.”

Trustee and the Trust’s education co-ordinator, Mary Reader, said: “Each year for the past 25 years, the Food Festival Education Trust has visited local schools to promote healthy eating and cookery skills. The secondary schools work has supported many young people into hospitality jobs at all levels and delivered specialist skills to support GCSE students. We

have seen thousands of children in Christchurch primary schools while running our very popular cookery days which started in 2004. Unfortunately, it has become very difficult to find chefs and nutritionists who are able to commit to the huge amount of work required to organise and carry out this important work, which we are keen to see continued.”

For Sophie and Kyle, the world changed overnight when their daughter Skye, then aged just three, suddenly lost the ability to walk, talk, or even hold her head up. Once a

bubbly, sociable toddler who loved singing and playing with her big brothers, Skye was struck by a rare, unnamed degenerative condition. Despite countless hospital tests, doctors couldn’t find a cause.

The family was told to prepare for the worst. “They said this would probably be Skye’s last Christmas and to make memories while we could,” Sophie recalled.

The festive season became bittersweet.

“We didn’t know we could hit that level of grief. We cried every single day. It felt like we were gradually losing different parts of our little girl,” Sophie said. But just as hope seemed lost, Julia’s House stepped in.

At first, the word ‘hospice’ filled Skye’s family with fear: “We thought it would be all about death. But when we walked in, there was laughter, colour, and children playing. It was full of life,” Sophie said.

The Julia’s House team began supporting Skye and her family with regular respite sessions, sibling support for her brothers Axel and Seth, and emotional and practical help for Sophie and Kyle.

A glimmer of hope In 2024, Skye began experimental treatment. Miraculously, her speech started to return, and one day, she was singing in the bath again. “It felt like I was getting my little girl back,” Sophie said.

Skye Kotze developed a rare degenerative condition at the age of three

at school, using her walker, and even dancing at home. But the future remains uncertain, as her treatment has ended and doctors don’t know what lies ahead.

Winchester pub earns four-star rating -Advertisement feature-

A pub, restaurant and hotel in the village of Hursley on the fringe of Winchester has received a four-star rating for its bed and breakfast offer, alongside its first rosette for culinary excellence.

The team at The King’s Head are very proud to announce the new ratings following an anonymous inspection by the AA. In their review, the AA inspector described the Grade II-listed building as a “classic comfortable village inn offering strong hospitality.”

The King’s Head was taken over by new owners in May 2025 and reopened at the end of June following significant investment and refurbishment. The historic inn received a great response from its growing customer base, with its use of seasonal local produce and regular menu changes proving extremely popular.

Visitors can enjoy the lounge bar, restaurant or courtyard garden, or stay the night in one of eight fully equipped en-suite bedrooms.

The King’s Head also hosts regular events. On Saturday 29 November, the team held their second “tasting evening” where diners had the opportunity to experience a five-course taste of culinary excellence for £55 per person along with an optional wine flight for £25 per person.

REVIEW Taj of Corfe Mullen

Photos © Dorset View For over 25 years, Taj of Corfe Mullen has been serving top-quality Indian and Bengali cuisine and classic curries to the people of Dorset. To celebrate this silver anniversary, proprietor Taj Islam invited me and my wife to come and try the food for ourselves.

Established in 2000, the restaurant is a family-owned operation: Taj’s older brother is the chef, while his son and nephew work frontof-house. In fact, the Islam family run several restaurants all around Dorset. They originally opened Wimborne Tandoori all the way back in 1981. More recently, they opened Westbourne Tandoori last September.

Stepping into Taj of Corfe Mullen, I was struck by the stylish interior, which featured several paintings and warm colours. The restaurant is divided into three areas: a raised platform looking out into Corfe Mullen, an open-plan area perfect for parties and large groups — the restaurant is popular with local curry clubs — and booths for a more intimate dining experience.

As we browsed the menu, we shared an entrée of poppadoms with dips, including sweet and tasty mango chutney and mint yoghurt, a yummy onion salad and a spicy chilli pickle.

We then had the mixed sharing platter for our starter, to sample a range of options served by the venue. This was excellent. The chicken and lamb tikka were cooked to perfection: succulent, tender and a lovely amount of spice. The onion bhaji was crispy and tasty, while the deep-fried mushroom was delicious.

For our mains, we went with some recommendations from Taj and his team.

My wife almost always has a mild korma (she cannot handle hot spices), but instead tried the modhu from the signature dish section of the menu. This tasted incredible. Chicken cooked in mild spices as well as honey and coconut with a little bit of cream. Very similar to a traditional korma but with a deeper flavour and beautifully sweet

with the addition of honey. An absolute delight.

I was thrilled to try the sizzling tandoori chicken. Grilled on charcoal in the restaurant’s specialilty clay oven, it is brought out of the kitchen on a trolley, still spitting and smoking, and dished up at the table with onions and other sides. This was a fun bit of showmanship, which made dining in at Taj of Corfe Mullen a real treat.

The chicken itself tasted great. A medium spicy heat, full of flavour and incredibly well cooked. I can’t handle very spicy curries like naga and jalfrezi (as much as I’d like to) but I like a bit of heat and this was perfect.

More showmanship was on display when we were surprised with a flaming chicken curry. Served in foil surrounded by a ring of fire, this looked fantastic. Once the flames had died down, the curry itself more than matched the spectacle.

Served in a tomatoey sauce with green peppers and onions, the meat was succulent and spicy, with a deep, rich flavour. A definite highlight of the meal.

The menu has a full range of side options. We went for egg fried rice which tasted great, while I had a garlic naan. This was light, fluffy and buttery — absolutely delicious.

We were also served cooked aubergine with paneer (a soft Indian cheese). This tasted incredible. The aubergine was soft and delicate, while the paneer was chewy and nutty; it had a similar taste and texture as halloumi. Combined, the flavour was marvellous.

There’s a full range of drinks available from the restaurant’s bar, but personally I don’t think anything tastes better with curry than a draught pint of Cobra, which I thoroughly enjoyed with my meal.

Taj of Corfe Mullen has been in business for 25 years thanks to top service and excellent food. Based on our delicious meal, here’s to another 25 years. Cheers!

Award ceremony to Hop on over to celebrate local music The annual Original Music Awards (OMAs), which celebrate Dorset musicians and the local industry, will take place on 17 January 2026.

This year, the event is relocating from its usual venue, Lighthouse Poole, to Marsham Court Hotel in Bournemouth.

A range of awards will be presented on the night, decided by a panel of music journalists, musicians, promoters and radio hosts from across the county. There will also be several special awards highlighting the contributions of individuals, shops and venues to the county’s music industry.

Most notably, the OMAs will present a special award for ‘Putting Dorset on the Map’ to acclaimed musician and political activist Billy Bragg.

Having owned a home in Burton Bradstock from 1999 to 2021, Bragg has long been vocal about the beauty of Dorset. In August 2025, he joined more than 200 campaigners to protest plans for a waste incinerator near the Jurassic Coast.

Organisers Matt Black and Mel Payne from Hangover Hill — the team behind the grassroots music events ‘Live & Unheard’ and ‘Legends’ at Lighthouse Poole — said: “We started the awards to bring some positivity to the local music industry. We know what a thriving music scene there is in Dorset, and we felt it should be celebrated.

“The music community works because it supports itself, and as a direct result of the OMAs there are now more venues across Dorset that are willing to support and encourage original music. This can only be a good thing for creativity in this inspirational part of the world.”

toad photo gallery An exhibition all about the region’s amphibious wildlife is opening in January at Moors Valley Country Park and Forest.

‘Amphibians are Friends: A Tale of Toad Patrol’ is an outdoor photo gallery raising awareness of Ringwood and Poulner Toad Patrol. For nearly 40 years, volunteers for the patrol have helped toads trying to cross a busy stretch of road as they migrate down to the nearby lakes to breed.

Pictures of toads and other wildlife saved by the patrol will feature in the gallery, taken and curated by Louis Pulford (this magazine’s creative director). Louis has volunteered with the Toad Patrol since 2024.

He said: “I have always been intrigued by amphibians since I was a child. I used to collect frogspawn from our family pond and grow the tadpoles in a tank and release them back into the wild.

Watching the lifecycle of the tiny black dot morph into a tadpole then into a frog always blew my tiny little mind — nature at its best!

“So, when I heard about Toad Patrol through a press release, I picked up the phone, hopped on board and got involved. The New Forest gives me so much; in return, it is the least I can do to say thank you.”

The gallery will open from 10 January to 12 July and is free to visit. Moors Valley does not charge admission per person, but vehicle charges apply.

The first in a new series shining a spotlight on the creatives in Dorset’s art scene What is your name and what do you do?

My name is Tom Hannibal, also known as Watcher Archives.

I am a local mural artist and illustrator from Bournemouth.

I also run a clothing brand that grew naturally from my love for design and creative expression.

How do you define yourself as an artist?

I stay closely connected to the current movements in

both street art and fashion. I aim to create bold, impactful designs using graffiti-inspired line work and distinct features that people can immediately recognise. My goal is to spark excitement, nostalgia, and a sense of connection within the community.

What could the local community, council or government do to support the art community?

I believe the council is already taking steps to improve the visual landscape of our area, but there’s room to grow.

Opening more dedicated spaces for graffiti writers and muralists would make a huge difference — artists naturally put more time and pride into their work when they know it will be seen and appreciated.

Events like open studio days, live painting sessions, and more publicly supported exhibitions would also help artists gain confidence and visibility. A lot of us struggle with putting our work out there in the early stages; initiatives

Fairytale mashup for Castle Players Castle Players are to present ‘Little Red Riding Hood and the Three Little Pigs – Babe in the Hood’ on 23, 24, 30 and 31 January at Lytchett Matravers Village Hall.

This is a brand-new fairytale mashup written and directed by member of the company Phil McMullen. Packed with colourful characters, catchy songs and more silliness than ever, it’s set to be a family treat to kick off the New Year.

In this topsy-turvy tale, Little Red Riding Hood, her no-nonsense Granny, and the Three Little Pigs all find themselves facing the Big Bad Wolf at the same time. Add in Hansel and Gretel, a wicked witch, and a handful of dodgy comedy characters, and you’ve got the recipe for a magical

I think people buy my artwork because it represents more than just the final image. It’s a reflection of the culture and stories I’m inspired by, and it creates a conversation between me and the viewer. I put a lot of intention into my work: its story, its details, its energy. personally, and that connection is what matters most to me.

REVIEW Blithe Spirit

Bournemouth Little Theatre, Winton

By Luke Graham This was yet another excellent production by Bournemouth Little Theatre Club in December.

This performance of Noel Coward’s 1941 supernatural farce ‘Blithe Spirit’ was funny and well-acted.

The story follows Charles Condomine, who finds himself in the unfortunate situation of becoming a “spiritual bigamist” when the ghost of his long-dead wife Elvira is summoned during a séance.

Elvira’s ghostly presence drives a wedge between Charles and his second wife, Ruth.

Coward’s script still sparkles, even 80 years on, with witty dialogue that has the characters bicker, fight and argue. The lines were well delivered by the experienced cast.

entertaining to watch and was great once again as Charles.

Belinda Harward was enjoyable as his wife, Ruth. Mairi Holmes was very good as Edith, the maid, a role which required lots of physical humour.

Lauren Killham was fantastic as the vicious Elvira, sometimes demure and other times childish and nasty.

A big applause for director Tim Fearon, who stole the show as the eccentric medium Professor Arcati (Madame Arcati in the original script).

His mannerisms and line delivery were hilarious.

This was a brilliant show, probably my favourite of the ones I’ve seen at Bournemouth Little Theatre since 2024. The next production is ‘I’ll Be Back Before Midnight’ by Peter Colley on 10–14 February. @dorset.view

It’s been two years since Dorset author, Janine Pulford, made a New Year’s resolution to get her seventh novel into print. She is now delighted to announce the release of ‘Paws in the Flood’.

Meet Max Nowza, the big-hearted dog detective with a loyalty to his owner that could easily bring you to tears, and just as easily make you laugh out loud.

When Max’s lead-meister, Adorable, is arrested for a crime she didn’t commit, the investigative pooch must take matters into his own four paws.

With his unkempt beard, large eyebrows and coarse grey, straggly coat, he’s such an unlikely detective, will anyone take him seriously? Not DI Roughly, that’s for sure, but Max knows every paw print on his patch, and the scruffy dog with a nose for justice is straight on the case.

This cosy crime novel is written from Max’s viewpoint and will enable readers aged from nine to over 99 to get right inside his head. His chumdogs also spring into life as he recalls events that led up to the case of ‘Paws in the Flood’.

This hero of the dog world will live in your mind long after you put the book down. Barky joy!

When out for my walk one morning, I made a terrible discovery, and that’s a hard thing to do in the little village of Chiddle-pon-Piddle where I live.

My lead-meister, Adorable, and I were in the Dorset woodland leading to the river when a stag sprang out of the undergrowth right in front of us. Before Adorable could stop me, I was off.

The deer’s musky smell flew up my hooter and my heart knocked wildly in my chest as I charged after it, but the faster I ran, the faster he went. Even with my ears streaming back and my nose cutting the air like a dagger, I lost ground.

The scent got weaker and weaker then, bowser-wowser, it disappeared!

I skidded to a stop and found myself paw deep in flood water. The river was much wider than usual and bowl me over with a dock leaf, the stag was swimming across it with only his head and antlers sticking up. When he got to the far side, he hauled himself out and swaggered off, flashing his white bum in a victory wave. He knew the river was too deep and fast for me to cross.

In the next second, the strong tang of our top dog-walking friend hit me like a fly swat, but where was he, and where were his spaniels?

I stalked up and down the bank, noticing the smell was stronger at a huge tree that had fallen into the water. Its roots stuck out of the ground in an earthy lump, and some of the branches had sunk into the middle of the swollen river. After taking a few long sniffs, I saw my besties’ lead-meister caught in the branches and he was in big trouble.

Without thinking, I clambered up the roots onto the tree’s slippery trunk and edged along as the water flowed noisily below. If I lost my claw-hold, I’d be washed away.

When my front paws slid, I thought my time was up, so I kept still to recover before crawling on my belly into the branches.

Thank muttness they were sturdy, and I leaned into them for safety, peering through my hairy eyebrows at a pale face I barely recognised.

‘Max,’ he said weakly. His dark hair straggled into sunken eyes that could hardly stay open. ‘Help me, Max.’ He was fading and there was nothing I could do. The way he was wedged in the branches kept him from drowning. If I tried to pull him free, he’d be washed away. I had to get Adorable and quickly, so I let rip with a volley of short, sharp barks. And where were my bestie chumdogs? There was not even a whiff of them.

I woofed and barked and barked and woofed until my throat hurt.

When Adorable found me, it took a while for her to work out what the problem was. Lead-meisters can be slow at understanding dog barks and to begin with, she thought I was stuck. Then she saw Joe. ‘Oh no!’ she cried, and her cheery face lost all its colour. ………….

Open new doors for 2026

By Marilyn Barber | newseditor@dorsetview.co.uk During December, all thoughts naturally revolve around Christmas and New Year celebrations and events, but once we’re in the gloomy days of January, you’ll have the time to think up and plan a new project for 2026.

And inspiration can come from unexpected sources.

A change I initiated came from a visit to a friend who lives in one of the new houses in Wimborne.

“I just love your internal doors,” I said. “I must have some the same.”

And replacing the dated pine doors has transformed the appearance of all the rooms in my 1969-built house.

Needless to say, I had to call in a professional to take out the old doors, but I am pleased to say that they have all gone to good homes, so haven’t been scrapped.

So, if you too want to give your home a really good new look for 2026, what type of doors should you choose?

Solid core doors are heavy-duty and soundproof, whereas hollow core doors are lightweight and budget friendly. Glazed doors with toughened glass provide natural light and a contemporary style.

One of the hottest trends is for frameless doors, especially in modern and minimalist homes. These doors offer a seamless transition between rooms, blending into the wall without visible frames or hinges.

Experts say that internal doors need to be replaced every 10 to 15 years as they work hard in most homes, being opened and closed many times during the day.

neutrals such as rich browns and terracotta, although white — which I chose — is still very in demand, giving a light and airy feel to rooms.

And you can replace an interior door without replacing the frame, as long as the new door panel is the same size as the old one.

Save energy in 2026

Energy prices are set to rise this January, as the energy price cap set by regulator Ofgem is lifted The price cap is set every three months and controls what energy companies can charge for electricity and gas.

According to Ofgem, prices for the typical household will rise by just £3 to £1,758 per year — less than 0.2 per cent. However, other analysts like Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis warn prices will rise more for heavy electric users: electricity unit rates will increase by 5.1 per cent, while electricity standing charges increase by two per cent.

One way to save energy is to reduce how much you use each day, so turning off lights or appliances when they’re not in use.

But making your home more efficient could save more

energy in the long run, bringing down bills and doing your bit for the environment. So, what changes could you make in 2026?

Solar panels According to the Money Saving Expert website, there are 1.5 million homes in the UK with solar panels. While generating free power from sunlight sounds like a bargain, they are an expensive investment, costing an average of £6,100.

Prices will vary based on the size of your panel system, your installer and your location.

It is estimated that solar panels can reduce your energy bills by £190 to £350 per year, and you can save extra money with an ‘export’ energy tariff

Unfortunately, it is likely to take at least 10 years or more for your solar panels to recoup their costs and pay for themselves. However, installing panels might increase the value of your property, and there is the ‘feel-good’ factor of knowing you have reduced your carbon footprint.

Use the Energy Saving Trust’s online calculator to estimate how long it will take you to break even on your solar panel investment.

Other costs to consider are that solar panels have a life span of around 25 years, so will eventually need replacing. And while they’re low maintenance,

you will need them to be regularly cleaned to ensure they are working efficiently.

You might be able to get your panels slightly cheaper through a group-buying scheme. For instance, Solar Together groups residents from across the country together to negotiate better deals.

Instead of exporting the excess solar energy, you could install a solar battery to store this power. This can be more economical: what you earn from exporting energy will be lower than the price you pay for electricity.

However, solar batteries can be pricey: The Eco Experts estimate the average price to be around £4,500.

Insulation Extra home insulation can reduce your carbon footprint and your energy bills.

According to the government, loft and cavity wall insulation are two of the most cost-effective energy efficiency measures to reduce bills.

Most homes built between 1920 and 1990 have a gap between internal and external walls. Filling this cavity with insulating material keeps cold air out and warm air in — but it’s not suitable for all types of home. Meanwhile, up to a quarter of your home’s heat

escapes through the roof, but laying mineral wool under the rafters can limit this.

Speak to trusted local suppliers, like some of the advertisers in this magazine, to find out if insulation is right for your home.

Simple fixes There are other small changes that can help you save energy.

Find and repair any drafts letting cold air in, such as around windows. Placing draft excluders along the bottom of doors can also help.

Switch halogen light

bulbs to more efficient LED lights, which use half the energy and last longer. The Energy Saving Trust says that switching 50-watt halogen bulbs to LEDs could save up to £4 per bulb per year.

Check your boiler is working correctly. Boilers should be serviced annually by a professional, which will save money in the long run by fixing issues and making sure it is running efficiently.

It is often set higher than needed, at 70°C or 80°C; according to Nesta, combi boilers work best at 60°C. Is your fridge freezer too cold? The Food Standards Agency recommends fridges should be set to 5°C and freezers to -18°C. Any colder than this may be just wasting energy. Modern fridges have temperature gauges to control this setting.

Ring ring Will you get a smart doorbell in 2026?

By Luke Graham Walk along any housing estate and you’re likely to see a few homes with high-tech doorbells on their front doors: square boxes with built-in cameras that can automatically record visitors and are connected to the internet.

Mechanical doorbells, which required visitors to pull a chain or string to ring a bell, were first invented in 1817, while electric doorbells were invented in 1831.

One of the earliest smart doorbells was Ring, which was first sold in 2013, though it didn’t enter the UK market until 2016.

The company that made Ring doorbells was acquired by Amazon in 2018.

There are now lots of options in the marketplace, and they are increasingly popular: according to a report from 2022, one in five homes has a video doorbell.

So, what’s the appeal?

Knowing who is knocking on your door without having to open it is obviously convenient and can be safer.

Video doorbells can send a notification to your phone, so no matter where you are in the house, you’ll be alerted

that someone’s at your door.

If you’re out and about or unable to answer the door and a package is delivered, you can usually speak through the video doorbell to say where you want your package to be left.

They can also help secure your home. Using motion sensors, they can automatically record anyone loitering outside your home, potentially deterring would-be burglars or providing vital evidence to the police.

We bought an Amazon doorbell during the Black Friday sales in November.

At the time of writing, I’ve yet to install it, but it looks straightforward. We ordered a wireless version that has a battery. It means we will occasionally need to bring it inside to charge, but it also means we don’t need to pay an electrician to hardwire it to the mains. I simply need to use a drill and screwdriver to attach a plate to the wall next to my door, then pop the doorbell in place.

Other than the tools, I’ll need to download the app and connect the doorbell to the internet. That’s to make sure I receive the notifications and camera footage on my phone.

As smart doorbells continue to evolve and become more accessible, it’s easy to see why so many households are making the switch. Whether you’re waiting for a parcel or keeping an eye on who’s stopping by, they offer security and peace of mind. Once ours is up and running, I’m looking forward to seeing just how much difference a small device on the front door can make.

Another factor adding danger to night driving is fatigue. The road safety charity Brake says that driving while tired can be as dangerous as drink-driving.

Churchill Insurance has some tips to help people to drive more safely at night.

First, prepare your car.

It’s illegal to drive at night without working front and rear lights, so check and clean your headlights, back lights, signal lights and windows, both inside and out, once a week, and more often if necessary.

Be mindful of others.

Make sure your headlights are not set too high and are properly aimed. Before you set off, adjust your mirror to its anti-dazzle setting. If you wear glasses, you may want to invest in anti-reflective lenses to help with driving at night.

Hold your course. If an oncoming vehicle doesn’t lower its beam from high to low, avoid the glare of the lights by watching the left edge of the road, and using it as a steering guide to stay on track.

Reduce your speed and increase your following distances. It’s more difficult to judge other vehicles’ speeds and distances at night.

Finally, get some rest. Make frequent stops for snacks and exercise if you’re driving through the night. If you’re too tired to drive, stop and rest.

It’s even worth shutting your eyes for a power nap – but make sure you’re somewhere safe, like a service station or even a town. Never be tempted to snooze on the hard shoulder of the motorway.

Christchurch MP Christopher Chope talks politics on the podcast Sir Christopher Chope has had quite the political career.

The Conservative MP was first elected in 1983 for the seat of Southampton Itchen. He lost the seat in 1992 to Labour but returned to Westminster in 1997 when he was elected the MP for Christchurch, a seat he has held for nearly 20 years.

In late November, the 78-year-old came onto Your Voice | Dorset Podcast to talk about his experiences, including serving in Margaret Thatcher’s government in the 80s. He recalled fond memories of the Iron Lady.

“I was absolutely devoted to her,” he said. “She still remains my great character who I wish to emulate in politics, not that I can.

“She was surprisingly approachable. If you had supper with her, she would insist on

washing up the dishes.

“The first time I ever met her was back in 1976, soon after she became leader of the Conservative Party.

I was chairman of Putney Conservatives in London.

She came and visited an old people’s day centre. I was really impressed… because she got down on her knees and spoke to every single individual in that day centre.

“She treated them as an equal to herself.”

Chope served in the Department of the Environment and was involved with the infamous poll tax.

“It became unpopular, but at the time it was popular because it was getting rid of the old unfair rates system. Margaret was insisting, and I agreed with her, that it was important in local

government that everybody should make a contribution.

It was a ready reckoner and would enable them to hold their councillors to account.”

The poll tax was introduced in 1990 but didn’t last long. Its repeal was announced in 1991 and replaced by the current Council Tax system in 1993.

So, what does it take to be a successful (or at least long-lasting) politician?

“You’ve got to have a thick skin,” Chope advises. “You’ve got to be true to yourself. I don’t lose sleep [if someone criticises me]. I sometimes lose sleep over the injustice of some of the criticism.”

Chope admitted that being the opposition party is “gruelling, unrewarding” work.

“But it’s a time to take stock, prepare and reexamine

your policies, work out where you went wrong and how you’re going to win back the support of the public.”

And would he join Reform?

“Not in the least. But I would like to see the right unite. I’m very pleased there’s an increasing confluence of the policies of the Conservative Party and Reform.

That could be the foundations for us working together at the next General Election.”

Let 2026 be a year of optimism and kindness

By Vikki Slade, MP for Mid Dorset and North Poole The start of a new year is a chance to turn the page and consider how we can make the most of our opportunities.

2025 was my first full year in Parliament — a year of steep learning. Like many constituents, I began with little understanding of how a Bill becomes law or where MPs can genuinely influence policy.

Now, with experience and a dedicated team, I can navigate Westminster more confidently — including predicting when I might be called to speak in debates — and focus on what matters most: improving lives in Mid Dorset and North Poole.

A key priority has been supporting families who have children with additional needs. All year, I have worked closely with councils to help ensure every child receives an education and pressed the government to properly fund SEND-related debts for

councils. I have been able to help several families secure the right school place for their child, and Liberal Democrat MPs successfully persuaded the government to extend support for adopted children.

We welcome the curriculum review and hope the forthcoming SEND review — due in the spring — will incorporate the changes we have long called for.

Protecting our beautiful Dorset heathlands remains just as important. I have called for more funding for Fire and Rescue Services and a wider resilience review so communities can better respond to the growing climate challenges of fire, flood, disease, and heat-related deaths. My petition on disposable BBQs was presented to Parliament, and I hope it will contribute to a broader discussion about reducing the environmental harm caused by human activity. /dorsetview.news

I have also raised serious concerns about the Department for Work and Pensions, particularly the Child Maintenance Service.

Years of underinvestment have created loopholes allowing absent parents to avoid their responsibilities — leaving children in poverty while they live comfortably. Modernisation is urgently needed to ensure fairness and to close these gaps once and for all.

Healthcare continues to be one of the most pressing issues facing our area. Although hospitals have seen investment, we still face a severe shortage of NHS dentists, mental health services are stretched to breaking point, and hospices are having to close beds. Several GP surgeries have been overlooked for expansion funding, despite clear local need.

showed that while people deeply value the NHS, too many wait too long or struggle to access the treatment they need. A healthy society is the foundation of a successful one, and I will continue fighting for better local services.

As 2025 comes to a close, I want to thank everyone who has shared their views and supported these campaigns.

I hope you had a very merry Christmas with those you love, and I send my heartfelt thanks to everyone keeping our emergency services and essential infrastructure running.
