IT’S GOOD TO BE DIFFERENT AND WE CERTAINLY ARE...

SOLICITORS

ESTATE AGENTS

We prefer to talk to you than talk to each other... well maybe we should explain... It’s about letting you know when we need to do something, letting you know when you need to do something. It’s about letting you know when something has happened and even letting you know when nothing has happened It’s about keeping you informed every step of the way and leaving you with the confidence that you will never have to chase us to find out how things are going... unless, of course, you tell us to just get on with it and let you know when it is done.

We believe it should be about what is right for you as a seller and what is right for you as a buyer. Ultimately, it’s about matching the right home with the right buyer.

Here we are again, heading for Christmas after a year of very special events.

Frost

Fayre

In putting this issue of the magazine together it has been very encouraging to experience the continued support and enthusiasm of the advertisers, bearing in mind the objectives of The Magor Churchmen include the provision of ‘events’ for the local community and to raise money for charities and those in need. The major contributor to our funds are our advertisers and without them it is highly likely we would not exist!

So, a very big Thank You! from the Churchmen to you all. For you, as a reader please recognise their contribution to your community and ‘give a little back’ by using your local businesses whenever you possibly can.

peace this Christmas

The arrival of the Frost Fayre reminds us that Christmas is drawing ever closer! I always think there’s something special about this time of the year; the dark and gloomy evenings become so much brighter (literally!) as Christmas lights begin to shine and once again it’s time for us to prepare to celebrate Christmas. The Christmas message is about light – the light of Christ that shines through the darkness of our world. The run-up to Christmas is a busy time for many of us but I hope that this year we are all able to find some time to pause and to contemplate for a moment or two

on the meaning of the season: to remind ourselves that God in the person of Christ has entered into our world, shared the full extent of our human lives and is the one who can give us true joy and peace. May God bless you this Christmas time.

Elections May 2012 saw elections take place across Monmouthshire, resulting in two new County Councillors representing the Mill and Elms Wards and several new Community Councillors for the Salisbury and Elms wards. A full list of your local Councillors, together with contact details is available on our notice boards or web site - www.magorundy.org.uk

Dog Fouling This continues to be an issue and a further six bins have been installed across the villages. Usage of the bins has increased, so we are making headway. The prize draw we are running in partnership with the local police to reward responsible owners has been successful, raising awareness to many dog owners. The first two winners were ‘Charlie and ‘Bailey’ - both Cocker Spaniels from Undy!

Queens Diamond Jubilee Celebrations Children at both Undy and Magor Primary Schools were presented with commemorative mugs as a keepsake to remember this great occasion. Shortly we will be liaising with both schools to plant trees in the community to further commemorate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

Magor with Undy Community Council WINTER 2012

Grants

We have recently granted monies to the ‘Wildlife Warriors’ based at Magor Marsh towards costs incurred on field trips and support staff and to the Undy & District Art Society for their Annual Exhibition when the whole of Undy Primary School attends for an off-site visit. Also the Gwent Wildlife Trust to enable them to commence work enlarging a reed bed on land at Barecroft Common.

Best Kept Village 2012 Magor won the ‘Most Improved Village’, whilst the Golden Lion won the ‘Best Kept Public House’ competition in the category for over 1000 residents.

Consultations The Council have actively promoted views and interests of the Community to national, regional and county level Government on a host of consultative matters, and are continuing to liaise with the local police in relation to speeding through the village, and with Monmouthshire County Council with regards to the traffic issues in and around the Square. Christmas 2012 Please do join us for a Community Open Air Carol Service in the Square with the Severn Tunnel Band on 1st December at 6pm.We do hope you enjoy the festive lights and tree in the Square, and the tree on Undy Pound -

During the coming year 2013, the Churchmen will be organising three ‘main events’. Make a note of them in your diary or calendar...

This will be of particular value to our advertisers as their messages will now go much further afield and maybe inspire a few more visitors to our community! visit: www.magorchurchmen.co.uk

Rhys’s Story by Claire Sansom, Rhys’s Mum

Rhys Sansom turned 4 years old in July this year and started at the Magor Church in Wales school in September, in Mrs. Allen's reception class and loves it. He is a very determined and sociable little boy and a great big brother. Rhys was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at almost 18 months old which was the result of a traumatic birth, but he doesn't let it stop him doing much.

He is unable to walk or stand unaided as the cerebral palsy affects his whole body but he loves being out and about and has a walking frame which he enjoys running around in. He attends the Serennu Children's Centre at Highcross for appointments with the physiotherapist and occupational therapist and to see his paediatrician. It was Rhys's physiotherapist who put him forward to have a go on a trike they have there in October 2011. We went every couple of weeks to use the trike (as they have a long waiting list for trike sessions) and had a half hour session on it each time to help improve the muscle strength in his legs and assist him with his core stability and strength. They gave us details of how we could purchase a bike like this ourselves as Rhys enjoyed the sessions so much, but did warn us they would be very costly as they are custom made for each individual’s own particular needs. We obtained a quote for a bike suitable for Rhys's needs in January this year and have been trying to raise the money for it since. We were still a way off our target when I saw in the May Fayre magazine that the Magor Churchmen raised money for charities so I emailed on the off chance they might consider helping us out with purchasing Rhys' trike. We picked up the trike on Friday 28th. September and he has been out on it several times since (weather permitting). He loves cycling around on it and we often cycle in to Undy along Church Road looking out for trains as we go over the railway bridge. Having this trike has given Rhys more of the independence he craves. We have had great fun as a family going out with Rhys on his trike which he can steer and pedal himself although we still have a bit of work to do on the steering! His favourite bit about his new bike...... the bell! It took the Churchmen little more than a few minutes to recognise that we could help improve Rhys’s daily life and subsequently donated £500 towards the cost of his new purpose built Trike. www.magorchurchmen.co.uk

WhicheverWay theWind Blows

Donovan Taylor looks at the future of the UK’s energy supply and security

There is a very serious question facing the UK’s energy security. Three-quarters of the electricity generated in the UK comes from power stations fuelled by fossil fuels - gas being the biggest source - therefore the ‘key’ to our electricity power supply! • Gas accounted for 46% of electricity supplied in 2008. Gas is also used to heat some 70% of homes. • Coal fired power stations provide some 31% of the UK’s electricity. • Nuclear power provides about 14% • Renewable energy sources provided 5.5% of electricity generated in 2008. Some 20% of the UK’s fossil fuel electricity generating capacity will be lost over the next decade, yet demand for power is forecast to double between now and 2050! Where is the Gas coming from? Britain was a net exporter of gas until 2004, but a steady decline in output has made us now, reliant on imports. In the past 42.2% came from Norway and 39.9% from Qatar. From 2010 to 2011 Qatar’s supply to the UK grew by 67% while from Norway it fell by 17%. Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) from suppliers other than Qatar all but dried up amid increasing competition from rival customers (e.g. Argentina and South Korea). Despite fears over Europe’s reliance on Russia, no gas was imported directly from Russia last year. Three quarters of gas arrives in the UK via pipelines from Norway, Belgium and the Netherlands. The other quarter is imported by sea in liquified form. Importing a high proportion of its gas, means 20 www.magorchurchmen.co.uk

that the UK has to compete on the world market for suppplies. In 2009 in a report, Ofgem identified an “unprecedented combination” of the global financial crisis, tough environmental targets and the closure of ageing power stations would increase the risk to energy supplies and lead to higher bills. Add this to a seriously ageing National Grid (built in the 1950-60’s) that has supply bottlenecks and supply weaknesses in various parts of the UK; Iran’s threat to block the Strait of Hormuz; Britain has not guaranteed its LNG cargoes with long term, fixed contracts; refiners have stopped buying Iranian oil ahead of an expected decision to enforce sanctions in response to Tehran’s attempt to develop nuclear arms; and the Syrian “accidental” attacks onTurkey - all combine to increase the risk of supply in the coming months and years! Try and imagine what you won’t have if the lights go out! Not since the end of rationing in 1954 have we so desperately needed to have an holistic national policy on energy and contingency plans that allow all of us to continue withour lives. We need energy providers who consider the long term national energy security, and not just profit and shareholder dividends. We need to be more careful in our use of electricity; less wasteful. We need a policy that will be accepted and supported after this current government, and the next, and the next. We need a policy of

? ???

?

? ?

?

self sufficiency in electricity generation. A policy that keeps prices fair and affordable and offers electricity consistently available to all UK regions. That policy would be the ‘business continuity plan’ for UK plc and would mean we have to accept renewable energy generation near to consumers. That will mean windmills on our local landscape; wave power generation around our shores; the Severn Barrier. It also means we have to have very good reasons not to support sewage gas, hydro electric generation, or domestic renewable energy generators. This is also an opportunity for the United Kingdom and particularly Wales. We can

easily become the world leaders on renewable energy generation, creating an industry and employment that innovates and develops sources of energy that cannot be threatened by interests outside of the UK. Wales could very quickly become a ‘centre of excellence’ for this building on the work of the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT) in Machynlleth, Powys and the Renewable Energy & Sustainability Centre for Wales (RESCW) at Coleg Llandrillo Cymru. Britain’s natural gas imports from outside the North Sea will surpass domestic production by 2015 and add more than £7billion to import costs as domestic supplies dwindle and Norway increasingly struggles to fill the gap. Santa’s Christmas Eve Visit...to you! Santa hopes to make some evening calls in the Magor, Undy and Redwick areas, as he has done in previous years. Gifts can only be received from 8.45am to 10.00am & 2.45pm to 5.pm on 10th to 14th & 17th to 21st December 2012. Also on 10th and 17th December between 5pm - 7pm.
