Editor’s Note
I suppose there’s little else to comment about other than the weather this year! Hasn’t it been awful? ‘God willing and a fair wind’, we’ll have a ‘decent day’ for the May Fayre, but as we go to print, standing water is iced over; the freezing wind is still blowing and the forecasters are continuing to predict more of the same “next week”! Perhaps Summer will start before May? We’ve had a lot of complimentary comments about last years’ Frost Fayre and we thank all those who have taken the trouble to let us know. It is intended to continue to develop the two Fayres that we organise each year and hopefully you’ll see some ‘new’ things at the May Fayre. We are, of course, reliant on you to come and enjoy the fun!

Glimpse that community spirit... So here we are again looking forward to the May bank holiday and to the May Fayre. There is evidence to suggest that May Day has been celebrated here in Wales since at least the early Celtic times and that it has been an occasion for raucous celebration in many parts of Europe since the Roman era! In pre-Christian Europe May day marked the official beginning of the summer and was closely associated with the festival of the Roman goddess of flowers, hence some of the traditions that are still performed in parts of the country today such as dancing around the maypole, Morris dancing and the crowning of a May Queen. In the early Christian tradition May became designated as the month of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which explains why in many parts of the world at this time of year statues of Mary are crowned with flowers and processed through the streets in great celebration. The calendar of the Roman Catholic Church celebrates the feast day of ‘St Joseph the Worker’ on May 1st and so the May Day holiday also has strong associations with celebrating and acknowledging the ‘working’ man and woman. For many centuries the early days of May have been a cause for the populations of our towns and villages to meet together at village fete’s and community gatherings to celebrate the coming of the summer and in hope and prayer for a good harvest.
The Rev. Jeremy Harris
together on May Day remains a strong one here in Magor and Undy. It’s important that we have the opportunities to do this and as usual we are indebted to the Magor Churchmen for organising the Fayre and for all that they do in building community spirit. As well as an opportunity for celebration (raucous or not!) it’s also important to acknowledge that through events such as the May Fayre the Churchmen are able to continue to raise a significant amount of money each year to donate to a range of very worthwhile charities and those in need. I hope that you will be able to come to the May Fayre this year and that you will enjoy your visit. My prayer at this time is that we might all glimpse something of that community spirit which has traditionally been part of the May celebrations and that we grow together in love and service. May the blessings of light be upon you, Light without and light within, And in all your comings and goings, May you ever have a kindly greeting From them you meet along the road. (A Celtic blessing)
Times may have changed but I think it is good that the tradition of the community getting

Precept 2013 / 2014 The Precept has been set at £105,000. This will allow the Community Council to maintain high standards and improve services to the Community.
Grants Members were pleased to be able to support the local Wiggles & Giggles Play Group and the 1st Undy Brownies & Rainbows with small grants as well as the local Citizens Advice Bureau, Wales Air Ambulance and SARA. Local groups wishing to apply for a small grant can download an application from the website, or contact the clerk. Play Areas
Two new pieces of play equipment have been purchased for the Undy Play Park (adjacent to Undy Athletic Club), and are due to be installed later in May or early June. The Council have liaised with Monmouthshire County Council in respect of the goalposts at Blenheim Play Park which should be replaced shortly.
Dog Fouling
As ever, this remains high on the Community Council’s list of problems and we are continuing to tackle the issue, allocating yet more funding in 2013/2014 to alleviate the problem. Further dog waste bins will be purchased and installed across the villages. The reward scheme for responsible owners is still being run, there have been three winners so far: Charlie, Bailey and Bronwen.

Home Zone
The Council has been working closely with Monmouthshire County Council Highways department reviewing the parking and traffic issues in, and around Magor Square. Members are conscious and mindful of trader, resident and visitor needs, and want to ensure that the right decisions regarding the Home Zone area are made, and so a public exhibition will be held shortly – look out for details on the website and notice boards.
Recycling Red, Purple and small green food waste bags are now available at Undy Farmers Market (4th Saturday monthly) at Undy Church & Community Hall, where residents can also recycle old household batteries: laptop battery, mobile phone battery, 6V, D, C, AA, AAA, 9V, and button batteries (please tape up button cell batteries before placing in the recycling box). The Churchmen’s help and support to others The activities during the past year have enabled the Magor Churchmen to give some £8000 to 19 or so different organisations, both locally within our community and further afield. For this year and future years, in addition to the usual allocation of donations, we are going to feature a concentration on a specific project or projects so that funds can be applied at a meaningful level. This year (2013) it will be the Benefice of 10 churches around the area and for next year it will be aimed at “Young People” - be that individuals and or groups.
Can You Help?

Art on the Moors inspires local Art Society It was in 2006 that the first Art on the Moors exhibition was held at the Undy Church & Community Hall and from its success the idea of starting an Art Society came into being. Now, some six years later membership has grown to 30+ meeting regularly on most Wednesday evenings. In the early days of the Society successful applications were made for a Rural Community Action Grant which helped fund demonstrations by visiting artists and the ‘start-up’ costs. Joining the SAA (Society for All Artists) gave members access to discounts on art materials and the necessary public liability insurance. A varied weekly programme now includes demonstrations from visiting artists who provide help and
guidance on the many varied aspects and methods of artwork, including wildlife, botanical illustration, landscapes and portraits. The fine use of the various medias such as water colour, acrylic, mixed medias, pen and wash and charcoal have been demonstrated over the years. Artists have also been invited to tutor workshops, occasionally as a ‘day class’. Jantien Powell and Paul Arnott, both well known for their creative use of pastels and watercolours respectively, are just two who have visited us several times. Not just pictures but ceramics, pottery, computer art, oil, pastel, ink and engraving have featured in the varied programme of demonstrations. We meet on Wednesday evenings from 6pm-8.30pm in the

Undy Church & Community Hall. Annual events include a Christmas Buffet and a Summer Barbecue, both with painting competitions for those who wish to take park. Guests are welcome to attend and with members they vote for their favourite pictures. We also hold an annual art exhibition early in September of each year in the Undy Church Hall. Open to the public on the Saturday and Sunday it provides an opportunity for all members to display their work. The highlight of the exhibition is on the Monday when children from Undy Primary School visit the exhibition throughout the day. Members are eager to be there to talk to the children about the paintings on display. The Society recently exhibited at the Creative Chepstow arts and crafts shop - the first ever exhibition away from Undy! As a society we have supported the “Art on the Moors event each year which has been held in a number of venues since its inception in 2006. In recent years the exhibition has been held in the Magor Church Centre and the standard of work continues to improve year on year! Competitions are put on for the school children with topics for art and craft work for all the age ranges.
Their work is displayed and prizes awarded in each category. This year Undy & District Art Society are holding a Gwanwyn Festival during May which is funded by Age Concern. There will be demonstrations and workshops and an open evening when visitors are welcomed. For more information about the Society please contact: Colin Paine - 01291 42522 or Beverly Reed - 01633 882 842
