Empowering “the helpers” 2019 ANNUAL REPORT

One thing that has not changed is the spirit of young people. Although their lives have been upside down from the global pandemic, they still long for connection, desire purpose and want to find ways to serve their community.

Dear Friends, Everything has changed in our world. Well, almost everything…

In the words of Mr. Rogers, “when I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me — ‘look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’” Our students have seen the helpers; the doctors, the nurses, the grocery associates, the first responders, the teachers and parents who are trying new things, and doing what they have always done in new ways. The students are our helpers, too. They let us see what giving means. In small ways and in profound ways, Magnified Giving has prepared students for this moment. Because of philanthropy education, students know where to find the helpers. They know that nonprofits in our community are essential because they serve those in need, they understand why volunteering is critical and they know they can find new ways to serve. They know that their small action can lead to a ripple effect, and they know they are not powerless. They know what problems our community faces every day. When they see them, they feel empowered — because they have the tools to be the helpers. Our work is as important now as it always has been, because at Magnified Giving we believe in our students, and we empower them to know that they can make their community better with three things — time, talent, and treasure. This year alone, over 7,000 students from over 115 schools participated in the program and are now prepared with a deep understanding that they are powerful helpers, and feel empowered to serve. They are empowered right now. You have supported Magnified Giving students so we can empower them to be the helpers. Right now they are learning how to help in the scariest of times, and you give them hope. Thank you for your trust and thank you for allowing these students to offer their time, talent and treasure to help our community now — and for generations to come. In Gratitude, Kelly Collison, Executive Director

Camp Give NKY at Brighton Center

Sponsored by Horizon Community Funds of Northern Kentucky Last summer, 16 youth ranging in age from 9-17 from Brighton Center’s Youth Leadership Development program, participated in Camp Give NKY, which was sponsored by Horizon Community Funds of Northern Kentucky. Brighton Center strives to provide transformational services for families in need in Northern Kentucky, and through Camp Give these youth got to experience what it is like to give back to their community. These campers used their time, talents and treasure to impact their own neighborhoods. • 7 hours of direct service and 6 nonprofit site visits • $3,600 granted to those nonprofits * The Kroger Zero Hunger Zero Waste Foundation provided $3,000 towards grants made through Camp Give NKY.

‘‘

We are proud to support Camp Give NKY, a program that has shown great success in fostering youth development, service, and leadership. When a partnership is this natural and impactful, we have truly come together for the common good of our community and our future leaders. ~Nancy Grayson President, Horizon Community Funds of Northern Kentucky

The Kroger Co. Foundation The Kroger Zero Hunger/Zero Waste Foundation offered an innovative challenge to Magnified Giving students; they provided matching funds — $500 per school — up to $10,000 total to Magnified Giving — for participating Magnified Giving student philanthropy projects that identify and choose a student-led grant to a charity that fights hunger and food insecurity. This is a challenge grant to encourage students to go above and beyond, raising additional funds based on their passion for this cause.

‘‘

The Kroger Co. Foundation is passionate about empowering communities and creating Zero Hunger | Zero Waste communities, and we are proud to support Magnified Giving with matching grants to local non-profit organizations focused on hunger relief and environmental sustainability. ~Sunny Reelhorn Parr Director, The Kroger Co. Foundation

The results were amazing… not only did 17 schools participate, but they raised a total additional dollars of $36,621. Kroger’s donation was magnified, students learned about organizations that fight hunger and together they made an impact!

Magnified Giving Alumnus Clayton Smith was a Junior at Archbishop Moeller High School when he first participated in the Magnified Giving program through a class on social justice and morality. He wanted to help more people in his community but didn’t know which organizations needed assistance. Through his group project, he learned a about La Soupe and how he could spend his time to contribute to their mission to “rescue, transform and share” unwanted food with people who are hungry. Clayton then talked about his experience and how he was inspired through his Magnified Giving project in an essay contest that resulted in him winning the 1010 scholarship — a partnership between MG and Northern Kentucky University. Clayton is currently a Freshmen at NKU in the college of Informatics.

‘‘

They have given me confidence in my abilities, opportunities that I can apply now and in the future, and they have financially supported me through this scholarship. I’m living proof that Magnified Giving is invested in, well, GIVING. ~Clayton Smith Magnified Giving Alumnus + NKU 1010 Scholarship Recipient

How We Are Helping Now East Clinton High School

‘‘

Because of what they learned from Magnified Giving, my students were still able to contribute during this time of need. They could still make a difference — from a distance — because they felt empowered to do so. ~Casey Curtis Teacher, East Clinton High School

Casey Curtis, a teacher at East Clinton High School, was inspired to help. Back in December, 2019, she met Tony Fairhead, who runs Childhood Food Solutions, a nonprofit organization that provides food packs to children — those who get a majority of their meals through school — during school breaks. With the extended break during quarantine, Tony’s services became more critical than ever. There was an “all-call” through a local radio station for desperately needed items — peanut butter and graham crackers. Casey and her students answered the call. They collected items from their homes, their teacher picked them up and delivered the food staples to Tony.

Young Philanthropists Visit Cincinnati City Hall Students at Clark Montessori (a CPS School) did extensive research on food insecurity in the Cincinnati region. They conducted surveys on the street, observed nonprofits in action and volunteered with Childhood Food Solutions to pack and deliver food to children in need. In January, the students and their teacher, Craig Rush, were invited to present their project to Cincinnati City Council’s Education and Culture Committee, who listened intently to their findings and provided encouraging feedback to the students. Councilmember Greg Landsman assured Clark students that they are the future of this city, ‘taking action now to find solutions to some of our most critical problems.’

‘‘

I learned that a lot of children are unfortunate to get enough food during big breaks like this. They rely on school meals to get them through and when they don’t have access it causes them to sometimes have to go dumpster diving for their next meal. Childhood Food Solutions helps with that by sending home boxes of food for the child and the family. ~A’Karya Frazier Student at Clark Montessori
