10 YEAR REPORT

dear friends, I have always believed in the power of giving. Like many of you, I would write a check to various charities throughout the year, hoping that gift would make its way to positively impact the lives of those in need. Then one day, I thought, “what if I gave that money to a young person, and empowered them to decide where it should go?” A charity would still get the money, but along the way, it would touch hundreds, maybe even thousands of people. Students could learn about the value of giving, the work of nonprofits and the critical needs in our community. Those ponderings became a concept and ten years ago that concept became Magnified Giving.

In ten years, thousands of students’ lives have been touched with the power of giving. They have been educated, inspired and engaged in ways that even I could not have imagined. They learned how their time, talent and treasure can have an impact and how using their voice to advocate for a meaningful cause can change lives.

As you read this report, I hope you will also be inspired by the stories of impact and the many lives that have been touched through the student philanthropy program. From students to teachers to non-profit organizations to donors and community partners. The ripple effect continues. That is truly “magnified giving.”

our founder’s story…

Roger Grein was born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1942.

He was adopted by Frank and Thelma Grein when he was six months old. Frank was fighting in World War II when Thelma learned Roger had a disability caused by a birth injury, what we now know as cerebral palsy. The doctors told Thelma that her son was unlikely to ever walk or talk. Refusing to give in to the doctors’ bleak diagnosis, Thelma became her son’s biggest champion and functioned as his physical therapist.

Roger’s parents taught him to never accept the limitations others placed on him. At age 5, Roger collected glass bottles, saving the pennies he made to buy a red Radio Flyer wagon. He used this wagon to expand his enterprise; collecting old newspapers he sold by the pound to the local recycler. At age 10, Roger had saved enough to buy a lawn mower and soon was

cutting eight lawns a week. By high school, Roger had 40 regular customers including his town’s mayor, principal and school superintendent.

in one’s self. More importantly, he talks about how all of us can make an extraordinary difference in the lives of others if we approach decisions with love and kindness.

Freshman year, Roger tried out for every sports team at his high school. He would often trip and fall, and wasn’t chosen for any team. However Roger’s efforts caught the eye of a coach who asked if he would consider helping out as the team manager.

Roger accepted and served as team manager for every team at his high school. He never did learn to swing a bat, but the “water boy years” set the stage for something bigger: a 36-year coaching career leading girls’ softball teams to world championships and travels around the globe.

In 2008, Roger founded a non-profit named Magnified Giving to educate and engage the next generation of philanthropists. Magnified Giving partners with local middle schools and high schools to teach students about philanthropy. The students volunteer with qualifying organizations and are taught to evaluate the benefit of the organization to their community. They then “grant” Magnified Giving funds to the organization of their choice. These funds are made possible by generous individual donors, corporations and foundations.

Roger graduated from the University of Cincinnati in three years with a degree in Finance, and earned his MBA at night school. One of his former teachers helped Roger land a job at a local bank. He was soon fired because he was told he ‘just didn’t fit in.’ Roger returned to cutting grass, asking clients if they would let him do their tax returns. Roger completed 25 returns that first year, his mother typing each one in their basement office. By the third year he completed 345 returns. In 1970, Roger opened his own tax and accounting business. He would go on to become the tax commissioner for three local municipalities.

Students often cite Roger as their favorite part of Magnified Giving. His classroom visits and closing remarks at the end-of-year grant ceremonies inspire the students. One wrote, “I’ve learned that it doesn’t always have to be money to give away, but most importantly love. Roger Grein is a great example of that.”

Roger’s mission to make a difference in the lives of others continues with Magnified Giving. He is leaving his legacy and those of our next generation of philanthropists are in good hands.

Roger’s business and reputation grew throughout the years. The boy whose mother was told he would never walk or talk had quietly become a millionaire many times over. Roger chose to give back to the community that supported him, and to date has given away most of what he has earned.

To educate, inspire, and engage students in philanthropy, and to touch the hearts and minds of students, lighten the concern of others, and magnify the impact of philanthropy. That is my goal.

Roger is proof of how a community can lift a life from the lowest of expectations to the highest in achievement. His adoptive parents, his coach, his teachers, and the first customers who reached out to him; Roger calls them his angels. They extended a loving hand when they could have easily turned away.

Roger is testimony to what faith and persistence can do when you refuse to accept the limitations others place on you. During his many speaking engagements, he talks about persistence and faith

Magnified Giving was founded in 2008 by Mr. Roger Grein, an active philanthropist in the Greater Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky area.

However the foundation of Magnified Giving was built many years ago.

Roger quickly became a champion for this hands-on philanthropy model and shared it with University presidents across the Midwest, pledging his financial support while the program could gain traction and take hold at each institution. Roger shared the story and vision with Xavier University, The College of Mount St. Joseph, and then with more than a dozen other College and University Presidents. Roger’s passion for helping college students truly understand the importance of philanthropy and the power they have in contributing to the fabric of the community has led to 34 colleges and universities embracing his philanthropy education model. The program continues today, fully managed by Ohio Campus Compact and funded by a national grant provided by the National Corporation for Service Learning.

In 2001, after having lunch with Roger Grein, then Northern Kentucky University President Dr. James Votruba informally shared a new idea with Roger.

He casually mentioned that The Mayerson Foundation had sponsored a class at NKU for students to invest money into local non-profit agencies. The light bulb went off in Roger’s head, and this was the spark that changed his life and has profoundly affected the lives of thousands of young men and women over the past decade!

Year One: High School Pilot Program

Roger Grein establishes Magnified Giving as a 501©3 and hires Todd Forman as part-time Program Director. A variety of high schools were invited to participate in the program for the 2008-2009 school year. This list included both public and private schools located in Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky. Teachers at the 8 pilot schools explored how to best implement the program within their schools - as part of a traditional academic class (English, Social Studies, etc...), as part of a community service class, as a focus for an existing extracurricular club or organization, or perhaps as a standalone philanthropy program. Working with Mr. Forman, these teachers developed curricula, created basic educational materials, shared experiences, and worked together to bring philanthropy education alive within their respective schools. Students, teachers, parents, agency representatives and funders gathered together on May 14, 2009 at Hebrew Union College to award grants and celebrate their successes.

22 schools participate in the student philanthropy program and $50,000 in grant money was awarded.

2011-2012 2010-2011 With a strong foundation to build on our program grew to 15 high schools for the 2010-2011 school year.

The program continued to include both public and private schools located in Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky. The year was an amazing success. Having outgrown the auditorium at Hebrew Union College, on May 11, 2011 we gathered at Mount Notre Dame to once again present the grants, hear from the student philanthropists and the agencies they funded, and to honor a student and a teacher with the First Annual Roger Grein Spirit of Philanthropy award. Over 250 students, teachers, parents, funders, agency reps, and friends of Magnified Giving attended and participated in the Award Ceremony.

making a difference at an earlier age…

With amazing success at the collegiate level, Roger wanted to give high school students the same opportunity to learn how to become engaged, educated philanthropists. Given the opportunity, he wanted to help teach and inspire high school students to learn that the secret of living is giving, helping young people across Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky experience hands-on philanthropy education in their classrooms, or as part of extracurricular programs. In 2008, Roger asked Mount Notre Dame teacher Mr. Todd Forman to help with the leadership and development of this program.

Magnified Giving’s (MG) Board of Directors and Founder, Roger Grein, took the next step toward institutionalizing the non-profit organization for sustainability.

The board began a search for the organization’s first Executive Director, resulting in the hiring of Kelly Collison. It was a year of “firsts.”

Magnified Giving had four summer interns working in development.

53 schools participated and over $100,000 was granted.

Magnified Giving hosts Camp Give to junior philanthropists in Greater Cincinnati in grades 2-8. We celebrate a milestone – 10 Years of Student Philanthropy and partnered with 83 schools and granted over $161,000 at our awards ceremonies. We hired Director of Programs, Alison Kaufman and our first Director of Advancement, Carey Kuznar.

Our program grew to 50 programs for the 2013-2014 year, expanding our reach to new schools in Ohio and Kentucky. Over 1300 people attended our ceremonies where nearly $75,000 was granted to deserving non-profit organizations.

Magnified Giving makes a big move – to our very own building! A generous donor, Dr. Joyce KupferMulderig donated and endowed The Center of Philanthropy on Reading Road, in memory of her parents, so that Magnified Giving could be institutionalized, have a robust staff with interns, host board meetings and offer our meeting space to other nonprofits.

We show youth how they can change their community through service, through giving back. We show them that giving is good and the more you give, the better your community will be.

Youth Philanthropy is a movement, and the movement is growing. Every year all over the world, youth invest hundreds of thousands of dollars in their communities. They are empowering themselves and finding support through youth grantmaking programs that strengthen their independence, leadership development, and decision-making power.

We believe not only in giving back, but also in educating our children on why we do so. This is why we support Magnified Giving. They challenge the youth in our community to look at others’ needs with compassion and look at the problems with a mind for solutions. Our gift is magnified in every student whose heart is touched by the spirit of philanthropy and the gift of giving.

east clinton and 4 paws for ability story…

10 year old Austin Roosa was diagnosed with autism, severe anxiety, and sensory processing disorder. Austin was in need of a service dog to help him in strenuous situations and calm his anxiety in unfamiliar environments. Unfortunately, service dogs can be quite expensive, so Austin’s family began doing local fundraisers on their own to raise money to buy him a service dog.

When the time for award ceremonies came around, the Roosa family drove over an hour to attend the Magnified Giving award ceremony. Once on stage, the students from East Clinton High School surprised 4 Paws for Ability and the Roosa family with a $4,000 check, the exact amount needed to provide Moana, a service dog, for fellow classmate Andrea Roosa’s younger brother Austin.

Meanwhile, Austin’s sister, Andrea Roosa, a former Magnified Giving student, looked to her teachers and classmates for help. Casey Curtis, the Magnified Giving teacher at East Clinton High School, shared Andrea and Austin’s story to the students who were involved in the Magnified Giving program at that time. East Clinton students and teachers were so inspired to help that they fundraised all year to support the Roosa family.

Teacher Casey Curtis said, “once we exited off the stage to get our picture taken, Amy Roosa, Austin’s mom, leaned over and said, ‘I don’t know how to say this without crying, but you have helped us completely finish our fundraising. The $4,000 was all we needed to get Austin’s dog.’ And cue the tears!

We had to delay picture taking because we were all in tears and in shock. It was truly amazing!”

Thanks to the hard work of the students and teachers in the Magnified Giving Student Philanthropy Program at East Clinton High School, and generous donations from people in the community, Austin now has his service dog.

Some of the major fundraisers included a NERF war in the school building, dress down weeks for staff members, and the school’s first Magnified Giving night, where they auctioned off baskets and duct-taped their principle to a wall during the basketball game.

depaul cristo rey and ohio justice & policy center story…

Tyra Patterson was imprisoned for 23 years for a crime she did not commit. When Tyler Rocquemore, a DePaul Cristo Rey student in the Magnified Giving program, found out about the case in her religion class while studying social justice, she stated that “everyone in her class was so shocked and wanted to do more, and help fight for her innocence.”

Five months later, through Magnified Giving, DePaul Cristo Rey High School students presented a $1,400 check at the Magnified Giving awards ceremony to Ohio Justice and Policy Center. OJPC fights for people like Tyra, so that the innocent can be free and so that others can find redemption from their past.

Tyler Rocquemore commented on the experience by saying, “It’s important to fight for injustices like this because this story can be an inspiration and example to others. Anyone can make a difference when you stand up for what is right. It took a long time for us to see results, and some doubted that a little school like mine could make a difference. But we stuck with it, and continued to have hope and fight for her.”

When word spread about Tyra’s case, students from DePaul Cristo Rey did everything they could to fight for her freedom. To help Tyra fight for her innocence, the students met once a week for the entire school year to figure out how to help Tyra. The students created a personal relationship with Tyra by video chatting her and writing her letters while she was in prison. The students fought for change by calling the governor of Ohio, John Kasich, several times, and by sending him videos explaining why Tyra deserved to be free. On Christmas Day 2017, Tyra Patterson was set free.

la soupe story…

This year, 6 different schools chose La Soupe as one of their grant winners. Students from All Saints Middle School, the GIVE program, Good Shepherd Montessori Middle School, Indian Hill High School, Moeller High School, and Springer Middle School all went through the Magnified Giving Student Philanthropy Program individually, but they all happened to decide that their grants should go to supporting the same charity, La Soupe.

to receive their grants the most. Normally, most non-profits receive one grant from one school during this program, but La Soupe won a total of 6 grants from 6 different schools, totaling $7,185.

La Soupe is a local non-profit organization that rescues food from grocery stores and local farmers that is deemed “ugly” and will be thrown out before sale. After rescuing the food, they transform it into healthy meals like soups, casseroles, sandwiches, and more. Those meals are shared with 47 different non-profit agencies in Cincinnati who are feeding the hungry, specifically kids. They are currently feeding up to 2,000 people per week who would otherwise not have a healthy meal.

Jess Kerr, the Director of Development at La Soupe, described what Magnified Giving means to her and La Soupe by saying, “This program is incredibly needed in schools. It allows students to learn about the issues our city is facing and the organizations that are trying to solve them. We have seen students who started off not even knowing what food insecurity was become advocates and loyal volunteers. Not only does this program support local nonprofits, it lets students make the decisions.

We love Magnified Giving and are so grateful to the schools who have selected us for their grant and the students who have volunteered long after the program has ended”.

This money will go towards purchasing the containers that the food goes out in and will sponsor approximately 20,000 healthy meals for our food insecure neighbors.

The students participating in the Magnified Giving Student Philanthropy Program were moved by La Soupe’s mission and felt that this cause deserved
