I have to start by saying well done to all who helped out at or attended the Market on Sunday. It was the most successful one we have had other than the Christmas market so hopefully we can continue on from this next month and have another big one. Our meeting on Tuesday was slightly larger than usual also as we had a few guests along including our 2 RYPEN representatives this year, Tiana and Krystyna with their respective families. Both girls are off on a great adventure this weekend when they attend the RYPEN camp at Woodside and I for one look forward to hearing their experiences when they return to the club. We also had the pleasure of having Simone Mazengarb return to the club to give us a presentation on her GSE experience in Taiwan with District 3470 South. Simone’s vocation is as an Online Journalist so she was over there observing how they go about similar vocations over there. We learnt that Taiwan is 1/3 the size of Tasmania with a population the size of Australia as a whole. Her days started with an early morning jog with the other GSE members to clear their heads and actually get to see some of the sites around where they were at the time. 9am-12pm they were picked up by one Rotary Club and taken site seeing. 12pm-5pm they were picked up by another Rotary Club and taken to vocational sites. These weren’t just sites that were specific to them they got to see sites that involved other members of the team. After hours they would get picked up by ANOTHER Rotary Club and generally either taken out to a night market or a Karaoke bar. One of the interesting things she observed about Rotary in Taiwan is that there badges don’t have their name on them they have their vocation. So if I was over there how does Mr IT Services sound? Some of the highlights for Simone include: • • •

Taiwanese culture – In particular that of the aboriginal inhabitants that arrived there over 8000 years ago. Her host family and their rooftop garden – They even gave her Baileys coffees each morning as a kick start ....nice touch. Eating a soup that was made from the fat off of a toads back....ewww, not even I would eat that!!

It was great to hear her talk so passionately of her amazing GSE experience in Taiwan. I must thank Simone for sharing it with us and hope to see her back at our club again sometime soon. We have a soapbox meeting next week so if you have anything you are passionate about and want to share with the club please let me know. This week’s fines - $40.55.

Australian History 1920 – The South Australian city of Hummock's Hill is proclaimed Whyalla.

World History 1551 – The last outbreak of the deadly 'sweating sickness' occurs in England. 1947 – 600 are killed when Texas City explodes as a result of a fire aboard a freighter in the city's port. 2007 – 32 people are killed in America's worst campus shooting. 2010 – A pulsating column of smoke and ash from the erupting Eyjafjallajökull volcano in Iceland reaches an altitude of 8 km.

Thought for the Day 1: I'm not afraid of death; I just don't want to be there when it happens. Thought for the Day 2: In the end, it's not the years in your life that count. It's the life in your years.

Could someone confirm how many Simon Brewer’s there are in this tipping competition? He was the top tipper in Round 1, the bottom tipper in Round 2, and steals the prize in Round 3 by picking the Showdown winner along with the closest Friday night margin.

Unfortunately I now have to caution Mayor Brewer about the ‘Frankish Rule’ which restricts the number of weekly prizes that a tipper can collect to ‘no more than two’. It was introduced after Morialta’s President Jeff Frankish collected 2 prizes early in a past season and is designed to prevent professional tippers (such as the mayor) from dominating the competition. The unluckiest tipper award last week goes to Chris Gascoine (Magill) who had 8 from 8 and a close margin heading into the final game of the Round – but failed at the ‘Showdown hurdle’. Needless to say, many were upset by the Showdown result (not just for its impact on their tips). I’m sure everyone will bounce back, so this week’s prize goes to the top tipper of Round 4. GOOD LUCK

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of a worthy enterprise a nd in particular to encourage and foster The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service. High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occu pations; and the dignifying by every Rotarian of their occupation as an opportunity to serve society. The application of the ideal service by every Rotarian to their personal, business and community life. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill and peace through a world fellowship of bu siness and professional people united in the ideal of service.

The Four Way Test of the things we think, say or do: Is it the truth? Is it Fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

For good food, good fellowship And the opportunity to serve through Rotary Ă–we give thanks.
