SHANTYTOWN AND RUBY VALLEY

The Shantytown settlement, located on the western edge of the Ruby Marshes at the base of Sherman Mountain came into existence after the second world war as a camp for hunting and fishing, with fish in the area being particularly abundant. Shantytown sits at 6,030 feet. Ruby Valley is an unincorporated community. According to Edna Patterson’s 1912 book of Nevada’s North eastern frontier the area was known as “Robbers Roost” due to it being used as a hiding place for criminals. Because of its proximity to Fort Ruby, a small camp had formed at Cave Creek by 1867. Woodward and Flynn operated a distillery that produced whiskey called Old Commissary. This made Cave Creek popular with soldiers. They built a sawmill and ran a restaurant and saloon, but these enterprises continued to exist only while Fort Ruby was active. The Cave Creek Ranch and nearby marshlands was sold to the government for the purpose of establising the Ruby Lake Migratory Water Fowl and Game Refuge. In addition 40 acres were set aside for the fish hatchery to replace the closed facility at Trout Creek, this property is now known as Dr. Harry M. Gallagher Fish Hatchery. At its peak, the hatchery produced over 200,000 pounds of fingerlings a year. The facility continues to operate today and is one of the most productive hatcheries in the state. We own a place at Shantytown and I just love it there. You can access Ruby Valley by using Secret Pass or when the snow is gone go over Harrison Pass. I prefer the drive over Harrison as the drive is so awesome. One time going over two baby bobcats crossed the road in front of us and lingered just long enough to get a good view and then dashed back to mom. Depending on time of year and water, the fishing can be great for bass, trout and looking for a prize fish the collection ditch for Tiger Trout. In the Spring go up for a drive on the ditches around the marshes just follow the signs. It is amazing how many birds you see and its like a canopy of sound over your head. I love to just relax at the property. If you go around past Shantytown and drive to the far end you can walk tour around the old fort area. Not a whole lot to see but it is marked out and we enjoyed it immensly.
