Visit historic Jarbidge, Nevada
Jarbidge is an unincorporated community in Elko County. Located at the bottom of the Jarbidge River’s canyon near the north end of the Jarbidge Mountains, it lies within the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest and is near the northwest edge of the Jarbidge Wilderness area. No paved roads exist within almost 20 miles of Jarbidge. The most accessible road is off Route 93 at Rogerson, Idaho. The final 18 miles are unimproved but usually open all year. From Elko the easiest access is off Route 225 on the way to Wildhorse. The North Fork-Charleston Road which has a sign is your turn to start your journey. The last two segments are unimproved and receive no winter maintenance. They are therefore often closed from as early as October to as late as June or July due to heavy snowfall. If its important you that you make it all the way in, then call for road conditions. Jarbidge is a name derived from the Shoshone language meaning “devil”. Natives believed the nearby hills were haunted. Gold was discovered near Jarbidge in 1909, making it the site of one of the last gold rushes in the Old West and was the site of the last stagecoach robbery in 1916. Its population swelled to near 2,000 in 1911, but afterwards began a slow decline when the mining facilities were largely cannibalized for the war effort during World War I. Mining operations ceased completely in 1932.

We unloaded at our property at Wildhorse and started our journey at Gold Creek. We had so much fun as they knew the area and spent the day driving around and exploring. We spent the night staying at one of their hotels, had a few toddies at the bar and met the locals who came in and listened to the best fun conversations and stories ( some of the best jokes I have ever heard, met such great people) and had a great dinner. Started our next day out by having a relaxing fantastic breakfast at the Outdoor Inn and came out to Gold Creek by a different route. We can’t wait to go back again!
