Jan. 21, 2020 Dear Judges:

I proudly nominate Times-News chief photographer Drew Nash for photographer of the year. Nash started at the Times-News a decade ago as a freelancer and has photographed every aspect of our coverage area. As chief photographer, he leads the visual journalism in our publication with creativity. With each assignment, Nash finds new angles to shoot from, even – and maybe even especially – events he’s shot dozens of times. At a football game, Nash captures the action and emotion on the field and in the stands. On spot news assignments, he looks for images to tell the story of the day, but also takes time to shoot photos that continue to give context in follow-up stories. With each portrait, he finds unique ways to tell the subject’s story. For these reasons, Nash is loved by readers, who recognize he’s their hometown journalist. They are also the reasons I believe he deserves the photographer of the year award. I hope you’ll see the same in his body of work from 2019.

Sincerely, Alison Smith Times-News Editor
