The lights of Magritte light up Villa Olmo di Viviana Dalla Pria

Dopo Joan Miró e Pablo Picasso, Como si conferma punto fermo del circuito delle grandi mostre, ospitando ﬁno al 16 luglio 2006 nelle sale della settecentesca Villa Olmo la rassegna dedicata a René Magritte (18981967) «L’impero delle luci», organizzata dall’assessorato alla Cultura del Comune di Como, rappresentato da Sergio Gaddi, in collaborazione con la Fondation Magritte di Bruxelles e i Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts del Belgio, con

il contributo di Poste Italiane, Csu, Vodafone, Bayer e Fondazione Corriere della Sera. La rassegna, curata da Michel Draguet, direttore generale dei Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts del Belgio, e Maria Lluïsa Borràs, raccoglie sessanta dipinti a olio e venti tra disegni e lettere illustrate realizzati dal genio surrealista tra il 1925 e il 1967, quaranta dei quali provenienti dai Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts del Belgio e che saranno visibili in Italia per l’ultima volta,

prima della loro deﬁnitiva collocazione nel Museo Magritte di Bruxelles. L’esposizione, che presenta alcune delle opere più conosciute del maestro belga, come “L’impero delle Luci”, “La buona fede” e “La fata ignorante”, trova il suo naturale punto di partenza da “Lo scudiere”, che può essere considerata come una prima opera, nella quale si accosta al naturalismo una costruzione cubista.

Magritte è un artista che attraverso il paradosso volle mettere il mondo reale sotto processo, rivelando nello stesso tempo la misteriosa natura della mente umana, come nel “Ritratto di Paul Nougé”, o nel “Matrimonio di mezzanotte”, o ancora nel “Supplizio della vestale”. Altre opere giocano con il concetto surrealista della metamorfosi, in cui alcuni oggetti si trasformano in altri, come nell’“Incendio”, o nell’“Isola del Tesoro”, in cui le foglie degli alberi si tramutano in

uccelli. Un altro importante settore della mostra di Villa Olmo è riservato alla serie di lavori sul linguaggio. Qui troviamo “La chiave dei sogni”, una composizione divisa in quattro scomparti occupati da una borsa, un coltello, una foglia e una spugna, con le relative didascalie. Sono esposti anche disegni preparatori e una piccola sezione dedicata alle fotograﬁe scattate da Magritte tra il 1928 e il 1955. La mostra è sostenuta anche dall’associazione Amici di Como.

After Joan Miró and Pablo Picasso, Como once more confirms its role on the grand masters’ circuit by hosting a Renè Magritte (1898-1967) exhibition ‘The Empire of Lights’ until 16th July 2006. The exhibition, hosted in the halls of the 18th century Villa Olmo, has been organised by Como Town-Hall’s Department of Culture (headed by Sergio Gaddi) in collaboration with ‘La Fondation Magritte de Bruxelles’ and the Belgian ‘Musées Royaux des Beaux Arts’, with contributions from the Italian Postal Service, Vodafone, Bayer, the Corriere della Sera Foundation and Csu. The exhibition run by Michel Draguet, director general of the Belgian Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts and Maria Luisa Borràs, is a collection of 60 oil paintings and 20 drawings and illustrated letters undertaked by the surrealist genius between 1925 and 1967, 40 of which come from the above-mentioned museum and which will be exhibited in Italy for the last time, before their final consignment to the Magritte museum in Brussels. The exhibition, which is displaying some of the best-known works by the Belgian master such as ‘The Empire of Lights’, ‘Good Faith’ and ‘The Ignorant Fairy’, finds its natural starting point with ‘The Stable Boy’ which may be considered as one of the first works where naturalism and cubist construction combine. Magritte is an artist who uses paradox to put the real world on trial; at the same time he exposes the mysterious nature of

the human mind, as in ‘Portrait of Paul Nougé’, or in ‘Marriage at Midnight’ and again in ‘Sacriﬁce of the Vestal Virgin’. Other works play with the surrealist concept of metamorphosis where objects are transformed as in ‘Fire’, or in ‘Treasure Island’ where leaves on trees turn into birds. Another important area of the Villa Olmo exhibition is devoted to works on language. Here we see ‘The Key to Dreams’, a composition split up into four compartments containing a bag, a knife, a leaf and a sponge, each one with its caption. Preparatory sketches will also be on display, and there will be a small section devoted to photos taken by Magritte between 1928 and 1955. The exhibition is even supported by the Friends of Como.

Art and faith in Campione d’Italia

Le origini di “Campilione” oggi Campione Secondo il Rusca, Vicario a Campione d’Italia nel 1620, il toponimo Campione (Campilione o Campellione nei documenti medievali) signiﬁca Campo di Bacco. «Essendo questi umili colli pieni di generose viti e così sarebbe nome composto da Campo e Lyo, tolto dal greco Lyo, che vuol dir Bacco». Descritto dallo stesso Rusca come «piccolo sito di poche case, ma grande per valore, dignità, antichità, bontà del terreno, felicità d’aria e bellezza di territorio», Campione ancora oggi riﬂette nelle acque del Ceresio importanti testimonianze di un glorioso passato.

Rusca describes Campione as «a small place with a few houses, but it is big as far as value, dignity, antiquity, good soil, healthy air and beautiful territory are concerned»; even nowadays Campione reﬂects in the waters of the lake Ceresio important evidence of a glorious past.

Dai ricordi di Salmoiraghi Non scorderò mai la prima volta che arrivai a Campione… Provenendo dalla strada cantonale che costeggia il Lago Ceresio, unica via d’accesso all’enclave, sono stato accolto da un importante arco, in fasce di pietra bicolore, curiosa presentazione per un paese di poco più di 2.000 anime tutte gravitanti intorno alle attività della cittadina; è il primo impatto che si ha con questa particolare realtà storico-giuridica. Sulla destra ero dominato dalle abitazioni costruite sul crinale della montagna che sovrasta l’abitato e che sembra essersi fermata appena in tempo per evitare di buttare tutto il paese nelle limpide acque del lago. Arrivato nel centro e lasciata l’automobile, ho potuto passeggiare sul Lungolago, soffermandomi a osservare, nei pressi dell’imbarcadero che consente di raggiungere Lugano in vaporetto, il piccolo porticciolo che ospita vecchie barche che richiamano alla mente l’antica attività del luogo: la pesca. La giornata era calda e soleggiata, e tra un giro nelle caratteristiche contrade del borgo e una sosta per rifocillarmi e gustarmi i sapori e i profumi della cucina in uno dei locali nelle adiacenze del lago, godendo della riposante vista che la posizione permette, il tempo è passato rapido.

Mi spinsi dalla curiosità sino ai boschi situati nella parte più alta del paese; incontrando nel mio salire il campo sportivo dove si allenano le squadre di calcio della cittadina e i campi da tennis, arrivando, alla fine, allo spazio immerso nel verde degli alberi dove è possibile organizzare grigliate e feste campestri. Da lì, una superba vista, uno dei panorami più suggestivi dell’intera zona ticinese e intelvese, mozza il fiato; si gusta, perché è un vero piacere, un’amplissima visuale del lago che da Lugano giunge fin oltre Melide. Prima d’abbandonare il paese ho ammirato l’antica chiesa di San Zenone trasformatasi in galleria comunale in cui sono conservati resti archeologici tombali dell’VIII secolo d.C. e affascinanti affreschi, a carattere devozionale, del 1300; e infine, qualche decina di metri prima dell’arco che m’aveva accolto e che ora mi salutava, una sosta in quel gioiello architettonico secentesco della Chiesa dei Ghirli, che si affaccia sul lago per quei pellegrini che vi giungevano in barca, riccamente vestita degli affreschi di uno dei campionesi più rinomati: Isidoro Bianchi. Questo straordinario paese, che raccomando a chiunque di visitare, mi è talmente piaciuto che non solo ci vivo e lavoro, ma lo servo, da tempo, come Sindaco.

Some of Salmoiraghi’s recollections I shall never forget the first time I came to Campione… Coming off the cantonal road skirting Lake Ceresio, the only access road to the enclave, I was received by an impressive arch made of 2-tone stone, which puzzled me for a village of just over 2000 inhabitants all connected with the little town’s activities; it is the first impact one has with this special historical-juridical status. On the right I felt dominated by dwellings built on a mountain ridge over the town, and which seems to have stopped just in time to avoid violently pushing the whole town into the clear waters of the lake. Once I was in the centre and out of my car, I could walk along the promenade pausing near the pier enabling you to reach Lugano in a steamboat, in order to observe the small harbour with old boats, reminding you of the ancient activity of the place: fishing. It was a hot sunny day, and between a wander round the town’s typical quarters and a stop-off to take some refreshment and savour the flavours and aromas of the kichen in a bar near the lake, as I enjoyed the restful view provided by the position and time flew by. My curiosity took me up to the woods above the town; on the

way up I came across some sports facilities where local football teams train and there are some tennis courts. In the end I reached an area immersed in the green of the trees where you can have barbecues and ﬁeld parties. From there you have a superb view, one of the most evocative panoramas of the whole area of Ticino and Intelvi – simply breath-taking; you drink it in out of sheer pleasure, this big wide view of the lake which from Lugano goes beyond Melide. Before leaving the town I admired the ancient church of San Zenone, now a municipal gallery, in which there are 8th century archeological tomb remains and fascinating devotional frescoes from the 1300s; and last of all a score of metres before the arch which had greeted me and which was now saying farewell, I just had to stop at that 17th century architectural jewel the Chiesa dei Ghirli giving onto the lake for pilgrims who would go there by boat, a church richly adorned in frescoes by one of the most renowned sons of Campione: Isidoro Bianchi. This remarkable town, well worth a visit, I liked so much that I don’t just live and work there but which I have served for some time as Mayor.

L’antica chiesa di San Zenone A pochi metri dalla riva del lago, immediatamente a nord del nucleo medievale del centro storico, sorge la chiesa di San Zenone, ora galleria civica. L’aspetto attuale dell’antica basilica è il risultato di modifiche apportate nel tempo all’originaria struttura romanica, che aveva sostituito un oratorio antichissimo, fondato nella prima metà del VII secolo sul luogo della necropoli longobarda che raccoglieva le sepolture degli appartenenti al gruppo familiare di Totone. Proprio questo facoltoso commerciante avrebbe deciso il destino di Campione con la donazione dei suoi averi all’Arcivescovo di Milano e alla basilica di Sant’Ambrogio. Recenti scavi archeologici hanno riportato alla luce tombe del VII e VIII secolo, visibili attraverso una pavimentazione a vetri. L’abside dell’antica basilica è decorata con affreschi trecenteschi che rappresentano la teoria dei dodici apostoli e altre figure di santi. A testimoniare la tradizione locale dei Maestri Campionesi, abili artisti della pietra, sono rimasti alcuni bassorilievi. The ancient Church of Saint Zenone At a few metres from the lake-shore, in the north of the medieval core of the historical centre of Campione, there is the Church of Saint Zenone, now it is a town gallery. The present aspect of the ancient basilica is the result of some changes of the original romanic structure, which replaced a very ancient oratory, built in the ﬁrst half of the VII century above the Lombardic necropolis which gathered the burials of the Totone family. This rich trader himself decided the destiny of Campione thanks to the gift of his properties to the Archibishop of Milan and to the basilica of Saint Ambrose. Recent archaeological excavation brought to light tombs of the VII and VIII centuries, visible thanks to a glass ﬂooring. The apse of the ancient basilica is decorated with frescoes of the fourteenth century which represent the theory of the twelve apostles and the saints. We can also see some bas-relieves from the local Maestri Campionesi who were skillful stone artists.

Le vetrate di Aldo Carpi e la raccolta museale di sculture del XIV e XV secolo Verso la fine degli anni Sessanta del secolo scorso, Aldo Carpi ha realizzato, per il battistero esterno della nuova chiesa di San Zenone, due splendide vetrate di grande suggestione: “Resurrezione” e “Assunzione di Maria”. Attorno alle figure di Cristo Risorto e di Maria, l’artista ha sviluppato il tema della Chiesa raccontando le figure storiche della Chiesa Milanese e l’attualità, per quegli anni, del Concilio Vaticano II e dei suoi papi. All’interno dello stesso Battistero, a cura del Comune di Campione d’Italia, è stata allestita una raccolta museale di sculture del XIV e XV secolo che richiamano l’opera dei Maestri Campionesi.

The stained-glass windows by Aldo Carpi and the museum sclulptures of XIV and XV century Towards the end of the sixties, in the last century, Aldo Carpi realised, for the external Baptistry of the new Church of Saint Zenone, two wonderful stained-glass windows: the Resurrection and the Assumption of Mary. Around the ﬁgures of the Resurrected Christ and of Mary, the artist developed the theme of the Church telling the historical ﬁgures of the Milanese Church and of the Vatican Council II and his Popes. Inside the Baptistry itself, a museum collection of sculptures of XIV and XV century which recall the art of the Maestri Campionesi has been set up by the Town Hall of Campione d’Italia.

Santa Maria dei Ghirli Prima della costruzione della strada rivierasca ottocentesca, si accedeva alla chiesa di Santa Maria dei Ghirli percorrendo la scalinata che la collega all’antico approdo sul lago, appena oltre l’ingresso nel territorio di Campione, a sud dell’abitato. Anch’essa di fondazione longobarda, è citata per la prima volta in un documento dell’874 come la terza delle chiese esistenti in paese ai tempi di Totone. «Edificata in onore sancte Marie locus qui vocatur Willari». Willari, vocabolo celtico che stava a indicare la presenza nelle vicinanze di un piccolo gruppo di case, si trasformò nel tempo in Guirli e poi in Ghirli, a cui il vicario Rusca attribuisce il significato romantico di luogo frequentato dalle rondini. La venerazione a Maria (la chiesa è dedicata all’Annunciazione) e i Maestri Campionesi (che la elessero a loro chiesa e sede delle riunioni di una confraternita) hanno determinato, nel corso dei secoli, ampliamenti e rifacimenti nell’edificio tali da tramutarlo nell’attuale esemplare barocco. L’artefice principale della fabbrica barocca fu il campionese Isidoro Bianchi tra il 1623 e il 1636. La facciata fu completata solo attorno al 1735, con uno scenografico prospetto collegato alla scalinata che scende a lago. L’interno è suddiviso in due spazi principali, separati da un’inferriata: l’aula gotica, con notevoli affreschi trecenteschi (in particolare il ciclo delle storie di San Giovanni Battista) e, sovrastata dal tiburio, l’aula del santuario con il presbiterio, splendidamente affrescati da Isidoro Bianchi con le storie di Maria. Le pareti e le volte sono riccamente decorate con elementi architettonici e figure in stucco della bottega dello stesso Isidoro. All’esterno, nel portico meridionale, un grande affresco di Lanfranco e Filippolo De Veris, padre e figlio (25 giugno 1400), illustra in modo assolutamente originale il tema del Giudizio. Lungo la stessa parete, ma strappato dal portico settentrionale, l’affresco (1514) di un pittore della cerchia di Bernardino Luini racconta le storie della Genesi.

Santa Maria dei Ghirli Before the building of the coastal road in the nineteenth century, you arrived at the Church of Santa Maria dei Ghirli through the staircase which connects it to the ancient linking on the lake, beyond the entry in Campione, in the south of the village. Founded by Longobards it is quoted for the ﬁrst time in a 874 document as the third of the churches in the village at the time of Totone,”built in honour sancta Marie locus qui vocatur Willari”. Willari, a celtic word which meant the existence of a small group of houses, turned itself into Guirli and then into Ghirli, to which the vicar Rusca gives the romantic meaning of a place full of swallows. The devotion to the Virgin Mary (the Church is dedicated to the Annunciation) and the Maestri Campionesi (who elected it as their church and their meeting place of a confraternity) determined, during the centuries, enlargements and remakings in the building, in order to turn it into the present baroque model. The most important craftsman of the baroque factory was the campionese Isidoro Bianchi between 1623 and 1636. The façade was completed only about 1735, thanks to a stagy view linked to the staircase down to the lake. The inside is divided into two main spaces, separated by a grating: a gothic room with many frescoes of the fourteenth century (in particular the cycle of the stories of Saint John the Baptist)and, towered by the lantern, the presbytery wonderfully frescoed by Isidoro Bianchi, with the stories of Mary. The walls and the vaults are richily decorated with architectural elements and ﬁgures by plaster from the studio of Isidoro himself. Outside, in the southern porch, a big fresco by Lanfranco and Filippolo De Veris, father and son (25th June 1400), depicts in an absolute original way the theme of the Judgement. Along the same wall, but pulled up from the northern porch, the fresco (1514) by a painter belonging to the circle of Bernardino Luini tells the stories of the Genesis.

La chiesa di San Pietro La chiesa di San Pietro chiude a Sud l’originario nucleo medievale di Campione. All’interno della chiesa, anch’essa ediﬁcata per la prima volta sopra una necropoli longobarda nell’VIII secolo, uno scavo archeologico, mantenuto visibile, ha riportato alla luce le fondamenta dell’abside della primitiva costruzione e alcune tombe longobarde. Ampliata all’inizio del XII secolo, fu dedicata in quella occasione all’apostolo Pietro. Nell’Ottocento un’ultima modiﬁca portò all’abbattimento del nartece per fare posto alla nuova strada per Riva San Vitale. La porta a vetri consente di osservare dall’esterno un prezioso ciclo di affreschi del 1326. I dipinti, che si sviluppavano un tempo lungo tutte le pareti, raccontano storie della Vergine e di Cristo e allineano su più registri, con intento didascalico, teorie di apostoli e di santi.

The Church of Saint Peter The Church of Saint Peter closes in the south the original and medieval core of Campione. Inside the Church, built at the ﬁrst time above a lombardic necropolis in the eigth century, an archaeological excavation, kept visible, brought to light the foundations of the apse of the former building and some lombardic tombs. Enlarged at the beginning of the XII century, it was then dedicated to the apostle Peter. In the nineteenth century a last change brought to the demolition of the narthex in order to give place to the new road towards Riva San Vitale. The glass door lets observe from the outside a precious cycle of 1326 frescoes. The paintings, along all the walls, tell stories about the Virgin Mary and about Christ and dress on many registers, with a didactic purpose, theories of apostles and saints.

Gioielli di legno costruiti dai maestri d’ascia del Lario e del Ceresio. Da più di un secolo, nel porticciolo di Moltrasio, la famiglia Aquilini mette a disposizione di sposi, turisti e pescatori la sua piccola flotta. «Da noi la stagione inizia la prima domenica di aprile e termina a fine ottobre - racconta Emiliano Aquilini, che con papà Antonio e i fratelli Nicolò e Matteo lavora alla “Nettuno”. Slicing through the placid waters of Lake Como is like diving into a multi-coloured picture. Nessuna entità della provincia di Como può vantare simili numeri a livello di discipline sostenute, di manifestazioni locali, nazionali e internazionali sponsorizzate, di squadre e di atleti che portano sulle proprie divise il marchio degli “Amici” o di un singolo associato. A livello di gruppo, Amici di Como ha di recente varato due nuovi progetti sportivi, che si inseriscono e arricchiscono Mondo Sport di Amici di Como. Importanti investimenti come gruppo nello sport, ma anche come singole aziende. I soci di Amici di Como infatti sostengono direttamente diverse società in un grande numero di discipline. Con questo servizio iniziamo a scoprire alcuni degli sport d’acqua che vedono in prima linea le aziende del Lario che fanno parte degli Amici di Como. C’è chi ha scelto di vivere direttamente un’esperienza sportiva, proprio in acqua, come Stefano e Nicola Polti, eredi dell’impero Polti. «Ho la vela nel sangue – dice Stefano Polti che proprio in aprile inizierà la Rolex Cup con la sua Mintaka – Ho iniziato sul Lago di Como, poi nel mare. Piano piano, seguendo la scia dell’amico professionista Roberto Spata sono arrivate anche le vittorie. Le ultime nel Trofeo Zegna, valido come campionato italiano e nel Mondiale». In barca con Stefano su Mintaka, una classe Swan 45 (barca lunga 45 piedi, nella foto a sinistra), c’è Nicola Polti, che condivide con il fratello la passione per la vela e le regate. «È uno sport pulito ed ecologico, in barca sfruttiamo il vento, come i prodotti della nostra azienda sfruttano il vapore – dice Stefano, che confessa come la passione abbia coinvolto tutta la famiglia – Le regate sono anche l’occasione per trovarci tutti assieme con mamma, papà e mia sorella e vivere il mare. Anche quest’anno, mentre saremo impegnati nella Sardinia Cup, il Mondiale a squadre con l’armatore e skipper napoletano Vincenzo Onorato (il papà di Mascalzone Latino ndr), non è detto che la famiglia ne approﬁtti per un breve periodo di vacanze insieme». La vela è la grande passione anche di Giovanni Maspero, poliedrico imprenditore fondatore del “Gruppo Prima”, nonché armatore e timoniere del Joe Fly Sailing Team, creato nel 2001. «Il 2006 sarà per il Joe Fly Sailing Team un anno improntato su una classe monotipo, il Mumm30, che non ci vede attivi da oltre due anni – dice Maspero - Abbiamo infatti deciso di tornare a partecipare al “Tour de France à la Voile” che si terrà nel mese di luglio, lungo le coste atlantiche e mediterranee della Francia». Un evento che non ha eguali nel mondo della vela in Europa e che vanta un seguito enorme da parte dei francesi. «Nessun team italiano vi ha mai partecipato, a parte noi nel 2003, e i test con il nuovo equipaggio sono iniziati in febbraio». «Per quanto riguarda la classe Melges24 abbiamo chiuso il 2005 con tante soddisfazioni: un quinto posto al Mondiale tenutosi negli Usa a dicembre ma, soprattutto, il bis come campioni europei a ottobre in Inghilterra. Un titolo che viene rimesso in gioco ogni due anni e che, dopo la vittoria nel 2003, siamo riusciti a riportare a casa con una gioia immensa. Il 2006 sarà dedicato poco a questa imbarcazione anche perché il nostro timoniere, Gabrio Zandonà, ha iniziato, anche con il supporto del Joe Fly Sailing Team, la campagna di preparazione per le selezioni valide per le prossime Olimpiadi. Il Farr40, la nostra imbarcazione più grande, ci vedrà partecipare ai maggiori eventi di classe del circuito mediterraneo in previsione del Campionato del Mondo che si terrà a settembre negli Usa a Newport. Saremo naturalmente pronti al via anche in alcuni dei più importanti eventi dedicati alla piccola di casa: l’imbarcazione della classe H22». Sempre nel mondo della vela due Amici di Como hanno deciso invece di sostenere più o meno direttamente nientemeno che la Coppa America. Silvio Santambrogio, presidente del Consorzio Como Turistica, ha voluto che la sua Tre-P&Tre-Più diventasse official team supplier di “+39”, la barca italiana di Cesare Pasotti, Luca Devoti e Roberto Ferrarese. Santambrogio ci spiega la filosofia del suo intervento proprio dalla base di “+39” a Valencia. «La Coppa America per la prima volta in Europa rappresentava un’occasione unica per un’azienda italiana. Abbiamo fatto questa scelta per passione, ma anche per permettere ai nostri clienti e collaboratori di vivere questa splendida competizione. Viviamo le prove e vivremo le regate come se fossimo ai box della Formula 1, spesso si può uscire anche sui gommoni, un’esperienza unica, voglio invitare qui molti Amici di Como, compresi tutti i nuovi soci. Valencia è a un’ora di aereo da Milano». L’esperienza di Coppa America per Santambrogio è anche un importante confronto con la tecnologia e i materiali innovativi, che passano dalle barche alle porte di Tre-P&Tre-Più che arredano la base del sailing team. Mario Pittorelli, il presidente degli Amici, con la sua “Bianchi Group” è invece trasportatore ufficiale della Harken, la ditta italo-statunitense, con una sede a Lurago Marinone, che fornisce attrezzature di coperta (package e verricelli) alla maggior parte degli scafi che prendono parte all’America’s Cup. Un marchio, quello della Harken, che ha già vinto la Coppa e ha partecipato alle finali sia come detentore sia come sfidante. Più avanti in queste pagine troverete un omaggio al nove volte campione del mondo di motonautica Guido Cappellini. long boat) with Stefano is Nicola Polti, who shares his brother’s passion for sailing and regattas. «It’s a clean ecological sport; in boats we harness the wind in the same way that our firm manufactures products by harnessing steam - says Stefano, who confesses his enthusiasm has rubbed off on the rest of his family - So regattas are an opportunity for me, Mum, Dad and my sister to get together and live the sea life. This year too while we are tied up in the Sardinia Cup, a World team event with Neapolitan boat fitter-out and skipper Vincenzo Onorato (father of Mascalzone Latino ed.), the family may well exploit the chance of a short holiday together». The 2006 season of Stefano and Nicola Polti as Mintaka’s owners begins in April. The Rolex Capri Week takes place from 25th April to 1st May, then there’s the Zegna Trophy at Potofino on 12th and 14th May, the World Team event from 5th to 10th June and the Rolex Swan Cup from 11th to 17th September. Another great sailing freak is Giovanni Maspero, the multi-talented entrepreneur and founder of ‘Gruppo Prima’, as well as being a boat fitter-out and helmsman of the Joe Fly Sailing Team formed in 2001. «The year 2006 is going to see the Joe Fly Sailing Team putting its hopes on monotype class, the Mumm30, after two years’ of its inactivity-says Maspero-We have in fact decided to once more take part in the ‘Tour de France à la Voile’ in July along France’s Altantic and Mediterannean coasts». This sailing event is unique in Europe and enjoys enormous success with the French. «No Italian team has ever competed except ourselves in 2003; tests with the new crew began in February. As far as the Melges24 Class is concerned 2005 was a great year for us: 5th in the World Event held in the Usa in December; even better was becoming Euopean Champions in England in October. This title comes up every two years, and after our 2003 victory we were over the moon about bringing it back home again. But in 2006 this boat will be virtually ignored partly because our helmsman, Gabrio Zandonà, also with Joe Fly Sailing Team’s support has started getting ready for selection to take part in the next Olympic Games. Our biggest boat the Farr40 will be taking part in events of its class in the Mediterranean Circuit, in preparation for the World Championship to be held in September in the Usa in Newport. We shall of course be ready to have a go in some of the events for the small boat at home: the H22 Class boat». Still in the world of sailing two Friends of Como have decided on the other hand to support, more or less directly, nothing less than the Americas Cup. Sivio Santambrogio, President of the Como Tourist Consortium, has wanted his firm ‘Tre-P&Tre-Più’ to become the official team suppliers to ‘+39’, the Italian boat of Cesare Pasotti, Luca Devoti and Roberto Ferrarese. Santambrogio explains the motivation for his initiative from the ‘+39’ base itself in Valencia. «For the first time in Europe the Americas Cup is a unique opportunity for an Italian firm. Although it’s a choice born out of passion, it’s also a chance for our cutomers and collaborators to live out this splendid competition. We’re living out the trials and we’ll live out the regattas as if we were at a Formula 1 box; you can often go out in a dinghy too which is a unique experience. I’d like to invite lots of Friends of Como to join us here, plus all our new members-it’s only an hour’s flight to Valencia from Milan!» The Americas Cup is an important test for Santambrogio of new materials’ technology, which go from the boats to the doors of ‘Tre-P&Tre-Più’ who furnish the sailing team’s base. Mario Pittorelli, the president of Friends, is on the other hand with his ‘Bianchi Group’ the official haulier of Harken, the Italian/Us firm with a branch in Lurago Marinone, which supplies on-deck equipment (packaging and hoists) to most of the America’s Cup boats. La Brianza vince a Torino 2006 di M.Mosc.

Donne protagoniste dello sport comasco e delle Olimpiadi invernali a Torino. La spedizione lariana a Torino 2006 è stata infatti premiata con la conquista della medaglia di bronzo da parte della brianzola Jennifer Isacco, terza nella gara di bob a due femminile, in coppia con Gerda Weissensteiner. Una grande soddisfazione per la lariana, che ha iniziato la sua carriera agonistica nell’atletica leggera e che poi è passata al bob quasi per scherzo, dopo aver provato per curiosità una discesa con un amico. «Questa medaglia è un premio per i sacriﬁci fatti», ha detto Jennifer dopo essere salita sul podio olimpico. La sua dedica è stata per la famiglia e per le persone che l’hanno aiutata ad arrivare ai massimi livelli nello sport. Per quanto riguarda il futuro la Isacco ha la certezza che lascerà il bob, ma non abbandonerà del tutto lo sport. Tra le ipotesi, il ritorno all’antica passione, l’atletica leggera. La spedizione comasca a Torino ha contato anche su Adelia Marra, pattinatrice, che ha partecipato alle gare sulla pista lunga. Adelia è giunta nelle retrovie, ma l’appuntamento olimpico del 2006 era per lei un punto di passaggio. Fino a pochi anni fa, infatti, la Marra era tra le più forti atlete mondiali nelle gare di pattinaggio a rotelle, poi ha scelto di cambiare specialità per partecipare ai Giochi. Torino è stata un’esperienza importante, ma la sua completa maturità agonistica sul ghiaccio sarà tra quattro anni, in occasione delle Olimpiadi 2010 a Vancouver, in Canada. Donne lariane al vertice, dunque, nella più importante manifestazione sportiva mondiale. E non è un caso che anche ad Atene, in occasione dei Giochi estivi del 2004, una ragazza comasca sia salita sul podio: Laura Vernizzi in Grecia conquistò infatti la medaglia d’argento con la squadra azzurra di ginnastica ritmica.

Brianza wins at Turin 2006 Women protagonists of Como sport and the Winter Olympics in Turin. Como’s participation in Turin 2006 was in fact rewarded with a bronze medal by Brianza girl Jennifer Isacco, di MASSIMO MOSCARDI third in the women’s 2-seater bob contest, together with Gerda Weissensteiner. A great satisfaction for the Como girl whose competitive career started with athletics, and who went over to bobsleighing almost as a joke, after trying a descent with a friend out of curiosity. «This medal is a reward for sacriﬁces made», said Jennifer after climbing up onto the Olympic podium. Her dedication was for her family and all those who helped her reach the top in that sport. As far as the future is concerned Isacco is certain she will abandon bob-sleighing, but not sport in general. She may go back to her ﬁrst loveathletics. Como’s Turin outing also counted on Adelia Marra, a skater who took part in long-track contests. Adelia was not up at the top, but the 2006 Olympic appointment was only a stepping-stone for her; Up until a few years ago Marra was in fact a top athlete in world roller-skating contests, and then decided to change disciplines to take part in the Games. Turin was an important experience , but she will reach her competitive peak on ice in four years’ time at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, in Canada. So it’s Como women at the top in the most important world sports events. And it was no coincidence that in Athens too in the 2004 Summer Games, a Como girl climbed up onto the podium: Laura Vernizzi in Greece in fact won a silver medal with the blue rhythmic gymnastics team.

A Camerlata, sotto gli occhi del castello Baradello, si trova la Tecnosport Italia, team di professionisti con la sabbia nel sangue che da anni partecipano a tutte le più grandi prove “Off Road”, dalla celeberrima Dakar, al Rally dei Faraoni, passando per le tappe di Coppa del Mondo Fia Tout Terrain. «Una manifestazione che abbiamo vinto nel 1995 con Maurizio Traglio, che oggi è il nostro presidente – dice il responsabile del team, Daniele Canonico – Siamo attivi dal 1989, sempre con le vetture Nissan, e abbiamo disputato per 15 anni consecutivi la Dakar e più prove in giro per il mondo, dall’Egitto alla Tunisia, dal Marocco alla Turchia. Forniamo i mezzi, ma anche un pacchetto completo, con l’assistenza e tutto il resto. Il pilota deve solo portare il casco». Molti i risultati ottenuti in queste stagioni. «Oltre alla Coppa del Mondo, abbiamo vinto nel 2005 la Coppa Bajas

con lo spagnolo Mark Blasquez, mentre vantiamo un sesto posto assoluto alla Dakar». Con la Tecnosport hanno corso molti piloti di grido. Tra questi anche Edy Orioli e Vittorio Emanuele di Savoia. «Una bravissima persona, alla mano – ricorda Canonico – Purtroppo il suo Rally dei Faraoni si concluse con un incidente. Ora vorrebbe riprovarci ma la famiglia non è molto d’accordo». Inutile chiedere qual è la gara dal maggior fascino. «Senza dubbio la Dakar. Per i piloti, ma anche per noi che seguiamo da vicino la corsa. Facciamo gli stessi chilometri di chi gareggia, ma arrivati al traguardo, anziché riposarci, iniziamo a lavorare sulle vetture. Sono giorni massacranti ma in un ambiente unico, indimenticabile, tra gente solidale e volti sorridenti».

area di sosta proprio a ridosso della struttura sportiva. La quota associativa annuale varia da 340 euro per il solo campo pratica a 590 euro comprensivi anche del campo prova. Per le famiglie le tariffe variano da 200 a 400 euro. Agevolazioni sono previste per universitari e giocatori associati ad altri golf, mentre i minori di 12 anni non pagano. Il singolo ingresso per i non soci varia da 5 a 20 euro. L’abbonamento a 12 ingressi va da 50 a 200 euro. Per i principianti, il Golf offre le mazze, mentre con 1 euro si ha diritto a 20 palline. Non mancano, inoltre, una lunga serie di convenzioni con i campi da golf della provincia di Como e non soltanto. Per chi volesse recarsi al Golf Acropolis, basterà uscire dall’autostrada A9 Como-Chiasso all’uscita di Fino Mornasco e seguire le indicazioni per Luisago e per il golf. Learn to play golf, or keep on form, a stone’s throw away from the splendid town of Como. This is an opportunity not to be missed offered by the Golf Acropolis Club in Luisago, a little village in green countryside 9 km from Como itself. Open to the public for only two years, the facility already boasts 220 members, most of whom are beginners. The merit for this is the convenient driving range open all year from 9am-sunset (except Tuesday morning), and the brand new 3-hole 5-acre practice course (Par 3, Par 4 and Par 5) where great experts too can practise in an oasis of peace and quiet. For those wishing to combine sport with relaxation a new wellness centre with sauna and Turkish baths will bo opening to the public at the end of April. The bar and restaurant on the other hand offering snacks and hot meals is already up and running.

There is also a large car-park right next to the sporting facility. The annual members’ fee is 340 euros just for the driving range and 590 euros including the practice course too. The family rate varies from 200 to 400 euros. Discount rates apply to university students and members of other clubs, whereas under-12s play free! One-off admission to non-members varies between 5 and 20 euros; a 12-round subscription is 50 - 200 euros. Beginners can use clubs free; 1 euro provides you with 20 balls. There are moreover many arrangements in place with golf courses in the Province of Como and not only. To get to the Golf Acropolis, come off the A9 ComoChiasso motorway at the Fino Mornasco exit and follow the signs to Luisago and the golf club. Il celebre motto “Memento audere semper” con cui D’Annunzio battezzò i gloriosi barchini d’assalto della nostra Marina Militare si addice anche a Giovanni Maspero, imprenditore appena quarantenne, ma già affermato nel mondo delle telecomunicazioni. Incidentalmente, pochi sanno che i Mas, passati alla storia in particolare per l’affondamento della corazzata austriaca Wien, a Muggia, nacquero proprio sul Lago di Como, nello “squero”, il cantiere nautico Taroni. Oltre a essere, per singolare coincidenza, le prime lettere del suo cognome. Maspero oggi ha dato vita a una gamma di motoscaﬁ Mas, spinti da potenti motorizzazioni e che nelle linee, ovviamente ristilizzate in chiave moderna ed elegante, ricordano in parte quelle tondeggianti dei mezzi da combattimento della prima guerra mondiale. The famous motto ‘Memento audere semper’ which D’Annunzio used to launch those glorious assault boats of our Military Navy fits Giovanni Maspero too, the entrepreneur just over 40 who’s already a high-flyer in the telecoms’ world. Incidentally, few know that the Mas famous for sinking the armour-plated Austrian vessel Wien, at Muggia, were born right on Lake Como in the ‘squero’, the Taroni boatyard. Apart from being (by chance) the first letters of his surname, Maspero has just given life to a range of motorboats Mas, propelled by powerful engines which when they’re in lines, obviously restyled in a modern elegant way, are vaguely reminiscent of those huge 1st World War battleships. Am ambassador for Lake Como all over the World. Guido Cappellini, a Como man, is World Formula1 Inshore motorboat champion. He has won nine titles to date and he wants a tenth in 2006. «We’ve been working through a long-term project, backed by our sponsors - says Cappellini - to achieve this result. This new season too we shall be aiming for the highest step on the podium, even if our competitors will be pulling out all the stops». It’s no coincidence that the reigning champion comes right from Lake Como. Formula 1 boats in fact began on our lake where high quality boatyards enjoy widespread recognition, and before Cappellini another great Como driver, Renato Molinari, was also at the top of this speciality for many years. Como si sta preparando a un’indimenticabile Notte Bianca. Sulla scia del grande successo dello scorso anno, il 10 giugno si replicherà l’esperienza con un solo imperativo: restare svegli e festeggiare dalle 18 di sabato 10 alle 6 di domenica 11. Quest’anno l’evento si arricchisce di una bella novità, la direzione artistica di piazza Cavour, il salotto a lago di Como, che verrà affidata al noto cantautore “laghèe” Davide Van De Sfroos. La manifestazione interesserà il centro storico della città, il lungolago e alcune aree periferiche. Le vie del centro saranno addobbate dagli allestimenti floreali. Lungo le strade e nelle piazze cittadine fino alle 5: rock, jazz, tango, classica, rappresentazioni, artisti di strada, mostre, mercatini, proiezioni e sfilate. I mezzi pubblici funzioneranno sino all’alba, inoltre a musei e monumenti l’ingresso sarà gratuito. Grande spazio poi allo shopping. Per tutta la notte, in città saranno allestiti mercatini di prodotti artigianali, mentre l’apertura straordinaria dei negozi è prevista fino alle 6 del mattino. Como is getting ready for an unforgettable Night on the Tiles. In the wake of last year’s great success, the experience will be repeated on 10th June with just this one imperative: stay awake and party from 6pm on Saturday 10th until 6am on Sunday 11th. This year the event will be enhanced by something radically new: the artistic management of Piazza Cavour (Lake Como’s lounge) will in the hands of the famous singer-composer ‘Laghèe’ Davide Van De Sfroos.The venue will be in the historic centre of the town, the promenade and certain areas on the ouskirts. Streets in the centre will be decorated with ﬂoral arrangements. Along the streets and in the town’s squares until 5am there will be: rock, jazz, tango, classical music, performances, street artists, exhibitions, market stalls, projections and processions. Public transport will run until dawn and there will moreover be free admission to museums and monuments. Shopping will be to the fore: All night the town will host craft stalls, and exceptionally shops will stay open until 6 in the morning. TERRITORIO Ramponio Verna, nella verdissima Val d’Intelvi, è uno storico borgo, con radici nel Mille a.C., appollaiato su un colle a 600 metri di altitudine, che si affaccia da un balcone panoramico sul Lago di Lugano, o Ceresio. Nonostante la sua esiguità urbanistica potrebbe entrare nel Guinness dei primati per un singolare record, un luogo di culto ogni 30-40 abitanti, a seconda della presenza ﬁsica sul posto degli iscritti nella popolazione comunale. Sono infatti una decina, tra chiese, oratori e cappelle, i siti, come vedremo ricchi di opere d’arte, a disposizione di circa 500 residenti ufﬁciali, ma molti dei quali arrivano in paese sporadicamente. Il comune è uno, ma le due frazioni, Ram-

Ramponio Verna in the verdant Val d’Intelvi is a historic village dating back to 1000 a.d. perched on a 600-metre high hill, giving panoramic views over Lake Lugano or Ceresio. Despite its small size it could get into the Guinness Book of Records for having a place of worship for every 30-40 inhabitants, according to the physical presence in the place of people ofﬁcially resident there. There are in fact about 10 churches, oratories and chapels, as we shall see rich in works of art, at the disposal of about 500 ofﬁcial residents, though many of them are sporadic visitors to the village. There’s one town-hall, but the two hamlets Ramponio and Verna were joined together in 1928. It’s an ideal spot for culural walks to the rock engravings – these ever-mysterious ritual

Fu un colpo di fulmine, per l’agonismo che traboccava da ogni match-race e per l’hight tech con cui erano e sono costruite quelle imbarcazioni d’élite. Decise, quindi, di farsi un’overdose di vento e onde acquistando inizialmente un Mumm30, di cui, per gustare il sapore della sﬁda, divenne anche timoniere. Parallelamente nacque il Joe Fly Sailing Team che vide il grande salto di qualità nel 2003 quando iniziò a gareggiare con il Melges24 (sempre un monotipo) con cui Giovanni Maspero vinse lo stesso anno il titolo europeo. Una classe estremamente competitiva e prestigiosa per i nomi dei velisti che la animano. Nel 2004 entra a far parte della famiglia l’imbarcazione H22 con cui, fresca di varo, viene vinta l’Interlaghi di Lecco. Uno scafo molto versatile l’H22: può essere infatti armata in soli 20’, si trasporta su un carrello e basta uno scivolo per vararlo e alarlo. E così, Maspero, non pago, nel 2002

It was love at ﬁrst sight of the competitive spirit in every match-race and the hi-tech with which those élite craft were and are built. So he decided to get an overdose of wind and waves, ﬁrst purchasing a Mumm30, which in order to savour the sense of challenge he decided to become helmsman of. In the same time he created the Joe Fly Sailing Team. The breakthrough came in 2003 when he sailed with a Melges24 (another monotype) and Giovanni Maspero won the European Championship. An extremely competitive and prestigious class through the big sailing names backing it. In 2004 the H22 boat, freshly launched, entered to make part of the family and Joe Fly won the Lecco’s Intelaghi. A very versatile boat, the H22. It can in fact be equipped in only 20 minutes, carried on a trolley, and all you need is a slide to lauch it and haul it in.

rileva dai fratelli Vismara (Alessandro è un quotato progettista viareggino) il cantiere Mas, di Maslianico, specializzato in scafi custom – a misura di committente - da cui è uscito tra l’altro il 60 piedi Kirribilli per Renzo Piano. “Memento audere semper” dicevamo, perché non sono state poche le peripezie per rilanciare il marchio Mas, che tuttavia oggi ha in costruzione un 18 e un 24 metri, sempre firmati Vismara. Per realizzare le barche a vela, sempre custom, che però potrebbero essere le ultime – per lasciare posto alle luxury motorboat Mas – arrivano a Maslianico ben 11 tecnici britannici. E il cantiere comasco è attrezzato al meglio per trattare i sofisticati materiali compositi, kevlar e carbonio, nonché per l’utilizzo di una ultramoderna tecnologia, che per l’opera viva dello scafo opta per lo stampo femmina, invece del vecchio e più diffuso maschio. Ne escono linee d’acqua lisce come la pelle di un neonato e questo favorisce l’idrodinamica. Anche alcuni materiali dei Mas a motore si basano sul carbonio. La gamma comprende il più piccolo Mas 28 Tender e Elegance (vedi sotto), poi un 40, un 60 e un 80 piedi. Con Giovanni Maspero, pertanto, la cantieristica lariana, agonistica e da diporto, forte di una tradizione che ha radici plurisecolari (la flottiglia romana e le navi da battaglia medievali) si arricchisce di un marchio nel segno della continuità, ma con la filosofia del progresso. Una pennellata di colore la vale l’uomo che è alla testa di questo Gruppo. Ce la forniscono gli uffici di Prima, a Olgiate, ariosi, ovattati, che stimolano la creatività e i rapporti interpersonali. Sono concepiti in bello stile finlandese, con legni chiari e molto cristallo. Non mancano, tra l’altro, un’area relax dove vengono condotte riunioni informali, con un tavolo al cui centro capeggia un vero camino, infine due saune, donne e uomini (non è vero che nel Nordeuropa la sauna è unisex), e perfino una palestra, con le più aggiornate macchine, dove può allenarsi l’equipaggio di Joe Fly. Maspero è detentore del titolo tricolore armatori-timonieri. «La vera vela si respira in regata – dice con velata timidezza – Io ho la competizione nel mio dna». MAS 28, TENDER E TAXI DI LUSSO L’Emirato di Dubai ha già acquistato una manciata di Mas28 da impiegare come luxury taxi per alcuni dei megalberghi che sono sorti come funghi, in chiave di una politica turistica che non ha eguali nel mondo. E qualche unità deve andare in Russia. Misura 8,47x2,66 metri, immersione 0,87, pesa 2.200 kg, porta 6 persone, monta un entrofuoribordo MerCruiser benzina da 320 a 425 hp, che lo spinge fino a 48 nodi (89 km/h), in alternativa diesel Steyr Mo da 250 hp. L’allestimento, totalmente artigianale, offre camminamenti di teak marino, plancetta elettrica di poppa a scomparsa con telecomando, sedili pilota e copilota ergonomici, piccola cabina prodiera con il comfort essenziale, tessuti di rivestimento resistenti e di facile pulizia. And so Maspero does not pay; indeed in 2002 he takes Mas over from the Vismara Brothers (Alessandro is a top Viareggio designer); the Maslianico boatyard Mas was specialised in custom-built (for person commissioning it) craft, which built among other things the 60-foot Kirribilli for Renzo Piano. ‘Memento audere semper’ we said, because there were many ups-and-downs in the relauching of the make Mas, which still builds 18 and 24-metre yachts, still under the name Vismara. To build the custom sailing boats (possibly the last, to make room for the luxury Mas motorboats), 11 British engineers came to Maslianico. It’s the best-equipped Como boatyard to handle the sophisticated composite materials, kevlar and carbon, as well as the use of ultra-modern technology, which for mouding the hull opts for a female mould instead of the old more wide-spread male type. The result is maxi-smooth water lines favouring the craft’s hydro-dynamics. Also some the Mas motorboat materials are based on carbon. The range includes the smaller Mas 28 Tender and Elegance (see below), then 40, 60 and 80-foot versions. È località ideale per passeggiate culturali alle incisioni rupestri - sui tuttora misteriosi segni rituali gli storici litigano senza successo - al “Caslè” (nei boschi accanto alla clinica poco prima di Lanzo) antico fortilizio “celtico” che dalla cima dialogava con altri “castella” dei Laghi di Como e di Lugano, o naturalistiche, visto che non è difﬁcile incontrare ungulati neppure così difﬁdenti verso l’uomo, al punto da essere a portata di teleobbiettivo. Ma, come dicevamo, Ramponio Verna si distingue per le sue chiese, la parrocchiale di San Benedetto accessibile, mentre altre sono raramente aperte, o addirittura sempre chiuse, come il delizioso oratorio di Sant’Antonio ai Monti, che custodisce un mirabile gruppo scultoreo del celebre scagliolista locale Pietro Solari (XVII secolo). Per visitarlo e per altri luoghi sacri, tra cui spiccano San Pancrazio e San Giovanni, un aiuto prezioso può arrivare dall’assessore alla Cultura Donata Volpi (Comune tel. 031.848225). È qualcosa di più di una leggenda, perché anche documenti commerciali notarili (XV secolo) citano la zona di Vestobia, una remota cittadella ora scomparsa, che esisteva accanto a San Pancrazio. More than a legend, also because commercial notary documents (15th century) mention the area of Vestobia, a remote village which has since vanished, next to San Pacrazio.

Nel suo lato sinistro esterno è visibile un battesimale di marmo che proviene dal veneziano Palazzo Vendramini. E San Pancrazio, immerso nell’intimità di un prato alberato, è un romanico purissimo, che risale al 1050. Nel primo edificio preziosi affreschi di Carlo Carloni e di Pietro Molciani, nonché stucchi di Paolo Caprani. Classica escursione di tarda primavera, l’itinerario che proponiamo non presenta particolari difficoltà e si può compiere tranquillamente in una giornata avvalendosi, laddove necessitano, dell’uso dei soli mezzi pubblici. Dimenticata l’auto in garage e muniti di scarpe e abiti comodi, si raggiunge piazza De Gasperi a Como per salire a bordo della Funicolare e giungere nella località di Brunate (692 m). Da qui ha inizio la passeggiata vera e propria per quanti decidano di salire a piedi verso il Faro Voltiano a San Maurizio e, da lì, attraverso l’ampia mulattiera, verso la Capanna Cao. Per i più pigri ricordiamo che è possibile ricorrere al servizio di autobus che conduce sino al piccolo parcheggio (974 m). Naturalmente il consiglio è di optare per la prima scelta: il panorama che si gode dal pulpito del faro ripagherà di ogni fatica. Una breve sosta al più piccolo Santuario d’Europa - costruito nel 1940 in ricordo degli alpini caduti in guerra – per ammirarne gli affreschi realizzati dall’architetto Piero Clerici, e si prosegue lungo la via “delle colme”, lasciando alle spalle la Baita Carla (992 m). Giunti alla Villa Collina, si imbocca il sentiero che si dirama verso nord; il bivio è segnalato con appositi cartelli escursionistici bianco-rossi (1032 m). Tra conifere che si alternano alle ampie radure si scende verso il lago fino a giungere sulla cuspide della cresta nord del Monte Tre Termini (1044 m). Per tutta la discesa si consiglia di procedere con un passo tranquillo e fare qualche sosta per diluire la fatica e godersi le meraviglie, nella giusta stagione, dei colori dei fiori tra cui l’Iris graminea, specie endemica e rara delle nostre Prealpi. Una vola giunti al terrazzo su cui sorge il Castel D’Ardona (1027 m), si imbocca, proprio poco prima dell’arco del portale in pietra dell’ingresso il sentiero che dirada verso il Monte Piatto: costellato da carpini, aceri e castagni, il percorso si fa sempre più ampio fino a diventare una larga mulattiera, attraversando il Pian del Gallo sino a giungere al piccolo abitato del Monte Piatto (614 m). In questa località vi è la possibilità di rifocillarsi nella caratteristica osteria, visitare il santuario o la famosa pietra pendula, masso erratico di granito che l’ultima glaciazione ha trasportato fin qui dalla Val Masino posandolo su un piccolo piedistallo e creando così una sorta di fungo in pietra. Imboccando la mulattiera che si snoda fra boschi di tigli e aceri, carpini e castagni, si arriva a Torno (205 m). Per il rientro a Como consigliamo di prendere uno dei battelli che salpano dal grazioso porticciolo di Torno o, in alternativa, uno degli autobus che, celermente, percorrono la Lariana. Sulle tracce del

Medeghino di Luana Torri

Sorgono su uno sperone roccioso in un punto panoramico di eccezionale bellezza, nell’Alto Lario, i ruderi del Castello di Musso, ancora lì a testimonianza di un passato glorioso e dei suoi illustri protagonisti, il più famoso dei quali è senza dubbio Gian Giacomo Medici, detto il Medeghino. Figura carismatica che esce dalle pagine della storia per entrare direttamente nella leggenda, è stato avventuriero, stratega militare di rara genialità, abile affabulatore e spietato signore del castello, gli bastarono pochi anni, dal 1523 al 1532, per raggiungere l’apice del potere e della fama. Versatile nelle sue molteplici attività, tra cui quella poco conosciuta di astuto commerciante di materiale minerario, la sua figura si ammanta di un alone di mistero nelle vesti dell’inafferrabile pirata del Lago di Como, alla testa della potente flotta guidata dalla mitica ammiraglia “Il Brigantino”. Conosciuto e temuto, il Medeghino ottenne dai potenti molti privilegi, come quello concesso dall’imperatore Carlo V di battere moneta. Anche quando il Duca di Milano lo privò dei suoi possedimenti e dovette abbandonare l’inespugnabile Castello di Musso, raso poi quasi al suolo, le sue conoscenze altolocate gli permisero di diventare marchese di Marignano (oggi Melegnano) e generale imperiale, fino alla morte nel 1555 avvelenato. Nel Duomo di Milano, un monumento funerario conserva le sue spoglie, mentre lo stemma del Comune di Musso continua a ricordare il castello (oggi ridotto purtroppo a pochi resti, come si evince dalle immagini) e con esso le vicende di questo temerario avventuriero.

At the top of the Lake on a rocky spur in an exceptionally beautiful viewpoint are the remains of Musso Castle, still there as a testimony to a glorious past and its illustrious protagonists, the most famous of which is undoubtably Gian Giacomo Medici, called the Medeghino. This charismatic figure who comes straight out of history to become a leggend was adventurer, brilliant military strategist, clever story-teller and ruthless lord of the castle; it only took him a few years from 1523 to 1532 to achieve great fame and power. Versatile and multi-talented, including his little-known ability as an astute merchant of mine material, his personality is shrouded in mystery as an elusive pirate on Lake Como who captained a powerful fleet led by the leggendary flag-ship ‘The Brigantino’. Famous and feared, the Medeghino obtained many privileges from the powerful such as the concession from Emperor Charles V to mint money. Even when the Duke of Milan confiscated his estates and he had to abbandon the impregnable Castle of Musso, later rased to the soil, his friends in high places enabled him to become Marquis of Marignano (now Melegnano) and imperial general until his death in 1555 poisoned. His mortal remains are interred in a monumental tomb in Milan Cathedral, whereas the crest of the Municipality of Musso still testifies to the castle (unfortunately now reduced to a few remains, as can be seen from the pictures) and with it the exploits of this fearless adventurer.

Up the mountains with the Cai A classic late spring outing, the itinerary we are promoting is not particularly difficult and can be easily done in a day – possibly with a bit of help from public transport. Leave your car in the garage, put on some comfortable footwear and clothes, and go down to Piazza De Gasperi in Como where you take the Funicular up to Brunate (692 m).This is the real start of the walk up to The Volta Lighthouse in San Maurizio, where you go up the wide mule-track to the Cao shelter. For the more idle don’t forget there’s a bus service up to a little car-park (974 m). The fi rst option is naturally the best one: the view from the lighthouse parapet will make up for the effort! A short stop-off at the little Sanctuary of Europe - built in 1940 in remembrance of the Alpine Soldiers who fell in the war – to admire the frescoes undertaken by the architect Piero Clerici, and then on along the ‘peaks’ track leaving the Baita Carla (992 m) behind you. When you get to the Villa Collina, take the path that forks up to the north; the fork is indicated by special red and white tourist signs (1032 m). Among fi r-trees which alternate with wide clearings you go down towards the lake as far as the peak of the north ridge of Monte Tre Termini (1044 m). The descent should be tackled at a slow steady pace, stopping from time to time both to rest and enjoy (if it’s the right season) the wonderful colours of the flowers including the Iris Graminea, a rare native species of our Alpine Foothills. Having reached the terrace with the Castel De’Ardona (1027 m), you take the footpath just before the stone portal arch of the entrance, which forks up towards Monte Piatto (614 m): through hornbeam, maple and chestnut trees the path gets wider and wider until it’s a wide mule-track which crosses the Pian del Gallo and finally reaches the little hamlet of Monte Piatto (614 m). In this locality you can partake of refreshment in the typical hostelry, visit the sanctuary or the famous Pietra Pendula, a misshapen granite boulder that the last glacier brought here from Val Masino positioning it on a small pedestal, thus creating a sort of stone mushroom. By taking the mule-track which winds through lime, maple, hornbeam and chestnut woods, you get to Torno (205 m). Il prossimo luglio, nella splendida cornice lacustre del parco di Villa Erba a Cernobbio, il festival musicale “The Rhythm of The Lake” metterà in scena due importanti opere e un balletto: il “Trovatore” di Giuseppe Verdi, Il “Barbiere di Siviglia” di Gioachino Rossini, e il “Don Chisciotte”. Con Ferrando che annuncerà “All’erta All’erta Il Conte”, inizierà quindi da un’altra opera verdiana la stagione estiva della lirica lariana. Grandi emozioni poi per il lento avanzare di Fiorello e per il suo “Piano pianissimo, senza parlar, tutti con me venite qua”, che darà il la, sulle musiche del grande Rossini, al melodramma buffo in due atti. A rappresentare invece il più brillante e travolgente balletto del grande repertorio ottocentesco arriverà il “Don Chisciotte”, con il corpo di ballo che danzerà sulle note dell’originaria partitura di Ludwig Minkus. Chi saranno invece i successori di Bob Dylan, Alanis Morissette, Tori Amos, B.B.King e Anastacia, le star del rock che hanno reso celebri le ultime edizioni della rassegna live che si svolge tra giugno e luglio all’interno delle belle location di Villa Erba? Qualche nome circola da tempo, grandi musicisti come l’ex “Velvet Underground” Lou Reed o l’ex Dire Straits Mark Knopﬂer, che in estate sarà in tour per il lancio del nuovo album con Emmylou Harris. Qualche lieve sussurro si alza anche per la brava Tracy Chapman, tra sogni nel cassetto e realtà sul palco. Tra le star di casa nostra le voci più insistenti parlano invece di Renato Zero e Ivano Fossati.

Happy Birthday Autunno Musicale A river of notes. And then poetry, performances, dancig and exhibkitions. This year the festival ‘Musical Autumn in Como’, the oldest event devoted to classical and modern music in Italy, will be 40. And it will be celebrating with a comprehensive extravaganza of a programme, with scores of events in various sections spread over the year from spring to winter. The historic happening, which was born in 1967, was the brainchild of two musicians Italo Gòmez and Gisella Belgeri, and past musical geniuses of the 20th century have included such composers as Azio Corghi, Savatore Sciarrino and saxophonist Steve Lacy, but also poets of the caliber of Edoardo Sanguinetluding two violin solosi. The key-word has always been ‘experiment’, so as to rule out banality. In this year’s programme the integral liturgical works of Luigi Boccherini performed by the Ars Brunensis Chorus from Brno (Czech Republic), a series of piano works Sonata Addio! with international performers. There will be chamber music too with the Swiss quartet Sine Nomine, the Hugo Wolf Quartet (Austria) and an extraord inary duo: the Italian violinist Giuliano Carmignola and the Russian Viktoria Mullova, who will be together for the ﬁrst time with a programme including two violin solos. And there will be stars like Alice, protagonist of the concert Alice in the Land of the Sulutumanas based on an interesting play of interactions and exchanges between the voice of the famous singer and the music of the Vallassinesi Sulutumana, the up-andcoming band of Lombardy’s new folk-rock scene. Then there’s the educational exhibition ‘Magistri d’Arte tra Como e l’Europa’ in Albese con Cassano from May to June, transferring to Valle Intelvi afterwards where conducted visits will be arranged by the local cultural association ‘Appacuvi’, then on to Gravedona in Palazzo Gallio. The involvement of the cinema will also be very interesting, especially an in-depth study of Giovanni Fusco, a composer who enjoys an almost exclusive relationship with the director Michelangelo Antonioni, and of Hanns Eisler German musician and composer, who ﬂed to the Usa when the Nazis were in power where he was persecuted at the time of McCarthyism.

This is the way we proceeded for Villa Melograno in Laglio past Villa D’Este by now entered in the society news. An antique workshop has been found on the market in 2001 and on behalf of a professional from Como, who wanted to carry out his own abode out of it, it has been restructured by Bene Habitare as a first time. It lied as a half-ruined and tottery rustic house which thanks to several interventions even to the statics of the building has become a splendid one-family residence provided with all the comforts. Later on the property was convinced by the flatteries of two English gentlemen to sell the immovable in 2003. Since then Bene Habitare has started a new radical work to fulfil the different requirements of the two very… exigent new owners. During the work one of the two purchasers decided to buy the adjacent villa, therefore… the work re-started from the beginning following the taste of the sole owner left. Now it looks as shown in the pictures. A splendid and perfect mantion provided with every comfort, with two swimming-pools as well as a berthing wharf for big boats. Our company is able to meet any demand, even the most refined ones. If one does not want to buy a property, for those who want to approach to know our land from the tourist point of view, we can point out various renting solutions in the most beautiful locations including the most exclusive services (cooks, menservants, chauffeurs, etc). Parlare di magia in generale, soprattutto intesa come fattura, stregoneria, maleﬁzio, è utile in toni scherzosi e amichevoli in quanto la vita di oggi è pervasa, anche se spesso solo a parole, di cultura positiva. Si consiglia di non prendere il tutto troppo seriamente. In ogni caso la magia fa parte delle nostre radici culturali, e di stregonerie sono pieni i racconti con esperienze e drammi realmente sofferti. I riti magici e propiziatori devono essere consumati in ambienti scarsamente illuminati e ricchi di ﬁumi di zolfo, i partecipanti a questi riti usavano cospargersi narcotici e stupefacenti, come la “belladonna”, l’hashish, la Canapa verde, lo stramonio, che suscitavano allucinazioni esaltatorie. Nella letteratura sulla magia è raccontato che per possedere una donna schiva alle sue proposte (o viceversa), l’uomo porgeva alla controparte: bava di rospo condita e camuffata sapientemente, sangue di pipistrello mischiato a peperoncino piccante ed erbe altamente aromatiche, come dragoncello, ruta, e levistico, inoltre la fantasia dei furbi serviva a imbrogliare i più creduloni. Ecco che un pranzo veniva servito con nomi estremamente curiosi, ad esempio, come riportato dal Codacci nel suo “La magia in cucina”, pipistrello marino in calderone sulfureo con contorno di gamberi satanici oppure il coniglio avvelenato con aromi di magia, il gallo nero al fuoco satanico o il dolce delle streghe con vinello luciferino. Ora mettiamoci ai fornelli e seguendo le indicazioni per realizzare i piatti che seguono otterrete la magia con un menù divertente, curioso e stimolante.

BRODETTO DELLA STREGA CONSUMATO AFFIANCATO DA RANOCCHIE ALLE ERBE DI SATANA (PER 6 PERSONE) Per il brodo bollire in acqua due peperoni verdi, 3 peperoni piccanti, 4 spicchi d’aglio spremuti, una cipolla rossa, due pomodori, un ciuffo di prezzemolo, un mazzetto di foglie di lattuga, 50 grammi di foglie di dragoncello, un rametto di rosmarino, due foglie d’alloro nobile, 5 cucchiai di olio extravergine di oliva. Evitare che nella bollitura attacchino

mescolando spesso, salare e pepare. Al termine della cottura passare il tutto al setaccio evitando di schiacciare per permettere al Brodetto di essere limpido per le ranocchie. Passare nel burro in padella 1 kg di rane pulite, preparare a parte della lattuga a foglie larghe, ben salate, che serviranno per avvolgere le rane fermandole con uno stecco di menta. A parte preparare una salsa con pomodoro, aglio, peperoncino e olio di oliva extra vergine. Finire la cottura delle rane passandole per 15 minuti nella salsa a fuoco lento per lasciarle ben insaporire. In seguito servire un “pipistrello marino” (razza) cotto nel calderone sulfureo con gamberi di satana. Lessare una razza di 1 kg in un brodo di aglio, peperoncino, basilico, maggiorana, poco levistico e una rapa rossa che avrete cura di preparare lasciandola bollire per almeno mezz’ora. Per i Gamberi di fiume, tagliare 600 grammi di questi in senso longitudinale, passarli in padella per 10 minuti sino a completa doratura. Preparare a parte delle foglie di vite e su ognuna mettere un gambero cotto. Preparare una salsa mischiando prezzemolo, aglio, capperi, peperoncino e olio di oliva. Sopra ogni gambero adagiato nella foglia di vite versare un cucchiaino di salsa, avvolgere la foglia e legare con filo sottile; cuocere quindi in un tegame, meglio se di terracotta. La razza sarà servita tagliata a fettine, disposta su un piatto e ricoperta dalla rapa rossa tagliata sottilissima, in ultimo aggiungere del pepe nero macinato. I gamberi saranno serviti in altro piatto nel tegame di cottura sul quale verrà versata dell’acquavite e altre guarnizioni alle quali si darà fuoco. Finire la Cena con un Dolce Malefico della Strega accompagnato da un Vinello Luciferino.

Talking about magic in general, especially about such aspects as spells, witchcraft and curses, jokingly and amicably is acceptable in as much as our current view of life (at least that’s what we say) is basically positive. So don’t take what follows too seriously. Magic anyway is part of our cultural heritage and tales of witchcraft abound, with experiences and dramas which people have really suffered. Magic rites and propitiations must be conducted in poorlylit places ﬁlled with sulphur fumes; those taking part in such rites used to cover themselves with drugs and narcotics such as ‘belladonna’, hashish, green hemp and stramonium, which caused hallucinations (‘highs’). In the literature on magic it is said that to win over a woman (or vice-versa a man) who turned you down, you had to offer your counterpart: toad spit suitably dressed and disguised, bat’s blood mixed with chilli pepper and highly aromatic herbs like artemisia dracuncurus, rue and ligustricum levisticum. The imaginative invention of crafty people served to take in the more credulous. Here is a meal which was served up under the most curious of names for example, as described by Codacci in his ‘Magic in the Kitchen’: sea-bat in sulphurous cauldron accompanied by satanic shrimps, or else rabbit poisened with magic aromas, black cock à la satanic ﬁre, or witches sweet with Luciferian wine.

longwise, brown them well in a saucepan for 10 minutes. Separately, prepare some vine leaves to put the cooked shrimps on. Prepare a sauce by mixing parsley, garlic, capers, chilli pepper and olive oil. Over each shrimp in its vine leaf pour a teaspoon of sauce, fold the leaf over and wind a thin thread round it; then cook in a pot, earthenware if possible. The sea-bat should be served up in slices, laid out on a plate and covered with ﬁnely cut red turnip; last of all add ground black pepper. The shrinps are served in another dish in the cooking pot on which aqua-vitae and other dressings are poured and lit. Finish the Dinner with an Evil Sweet and Luciferian Wine.

WITCHES’ BROTH TOGETHER WITH FROGS AND SATAN’S HERBS (FOR 6 PEOPLE) For the broth boil (in water) 2 green peppers, 3 hot peppers, 3 crushed garlic cloves, 1 red onion, 2 tomatoes, a sprig of parsley, a bunch of lettuce leaves, 50 grams of artemisia dracuncurus leaves, a sprig of rosemary, 2 bay leaves and 5 spoonfuls of extra-virgin olive oil. To avoid ingredients sticking together keep stirring; add salt and pepper. Once cooked strain without crushing so that Broth is nice and clear for the frogs. Fry 1 kg of cleaned frogs in butter in a frying-pan; prepare some well-salted wide lettuce leaves separately to wrap the frogs in, spearing them with a mint stalk; once more separately prepare a sauce with tomato, garlic, chilli pepper and extra-virgin olive oil. Finish cooking the frogs by simmering them in the sauce for 15 minutes to make them ﬂavoursome. Afterwards serve up a ‘sea-bat’ cooked in a sulphurous cauldron with Satan’s shrimps. Stew a 1 kg sea-bat in a broth consisting of garlic, chilli pepper, basil, marjoram, a little ligustricum levisticum and a red turnip to be cooked carefully for at least half an hour. To do the fresh-water shrimps, cut up 600 grams of these
