The title may be smaller in size, but it is certainly no smaller in its content. We have been busy this year working on new relationships to drive our content even further than before. With new features and some old ones that you love. We are delighted to welcome our new Publication Manager Peter Brady to the helm, helping us to strive for greatness in all that we do and ensuring that EAUX will be with you for many more years to come. to Fashion Styling, Festival Glamping and all in between. We hope there is something for everyone in the issue. We will be adapting and changing the content as the year progresses with new features planned and coming soon. With all this and more of what you have grown to love, the new look EAUX is both appealing and informative. We hope you enjoy the read it as much as we enjoyed creating it.

prison) With one of his paintings used as the lead image of last years Koestler Trust exhibition at the South bank; ultimately being awarded a Scholarship in fine art. He has also been featured in Not Shut up magazine, The Islington Gazette, Latino Life

As well as interviews with The BBC (For National Prison Radio) To tell his story, with the aim to inspire other inmates to use their time constructively while in custody. lifestyle EAUX - Thanks for joining us Julio, to start with please can you give our readers an insight into you as an Artist? Julio - I spent my early years in a tropical country filled with vibrant colours and exotic tastes. When I paint, these memories inspire how I colour my surroundings. The reason I use the female body in my work (apart from the reason that I’m a man) is that as a Latin American I come from a culture which is more sexually open than the Anglo Saxon culture I am now part of.

An example of this can be seen clearly in my portrait of Lady Gaga, based on a black and white publicity photo of her in a nightclub, almost naked with her arm around a skeleton. I challenge the viewer by adding my own ideas to the painting by placing the orang-utan, in full colour, in a frame. He represents real life, in contrast to the black and white image. He also stares at the viewer, reinforcing the idea of the primitive nature of watching, while at the same time being watched as society is becoming the big brother state.

10

Hence the title: Looking at you, looking at me. The submerged ideas in the work are meant to engage the viewer to draw their own conclusions, knowing that there is more to the work than meets the eye. From all this I have learned that one’s freedom can be taken away overnight by the state. But I have learned that my mind is still free, Thank god for that!

the art department and prison recycling centre. They also provided me with materials, allowing me to paint in my cell. I used to share this confined (12 x 7 foot) space with another inmate: toilet, eating area and living quarters. My painting was a form of escapism from this and other aspects of prison’s monotonous regime.

I attach a prison tag at the bottom right hand corner of all my works to certify where the works were produced and question the stigma attached to anyone that has been to prison. HOW DID YOU FIRST FIND YOUR INSPIRATION TO BECOME AN ARTIST? I trained as a photographer and worked in the field for over fifteen years, it was only when my camera (and my freedom) were taken away from me that i discovered the healing powers of painting. In 2012 I received a prison sentence for defending myself from an assault. I was very depressed for several months, but then my creative side came back. I decided at that point not to waste my time in prison, and started attending art classes in the education department. Tutors in the art department taught me how to use acrylics, once I had learnt the basics I painted on bits of prison linen and canvas. Stretching these over boards from

During my time inside I constructed a visual diary of paintings that communicated my oppressed world behind prison walls and my determination to break down barriers to discover inner freedom and hopes for a new future. This resilience lead me to my eventual release from prison. WE FIRST SAW YOUR EXHIBITION WORKS IN LONDON, IN DECEMBER 2015, HOW HAVE THE LAST ONE AND A HALF YEARS BEEN FOR YOU CREATIVELY? I am constantly creating, and have this year worked on a couple of paintings. Most recently

lifestyle I have been actively looking for a gallery that can represent me to reach a wider audience. As well as my paining I have just finished writing screenplay for Done and Dusted a mobster comedy which I started when I was inside and at present, casting for my first feature film with the aim to start filming later on this year. WHAT IS YOUR PREFERRED MEDIUM? The only medium that I could use while in prison was acrylic paints, (due to the constricted working area) so this became my main medium. I had two and a half years to learn how mix and use the colours to the point where people can be convinced that oil paints are used. HOW DO YOU DECIDE ON THE THEME FOR EACH OF OUR PICTURES? For each of my paintings I start by observing the many things that I see around me that make me think about the world we live in. Question it and then depict it and look for the best way to challenge

the viewer and convey my message through my painting. I focus on my strengths with my use of colour in my creations. This has given me my own style which I have used to illustrate my thoughts and emotions on the world we live in, these become visually pleasing to the eye in order to maximise my audience. ONE OF OUR FAVOURITE PIECES OF YOURS A LION, ELEPHANT AND A MOUSE AT A BAR, COULD YOU EXPLAIN MORE ABOUT YOUR INSPIRATION FOR THIS PIECE?

A number of art works have been created since my release; the major and biggest I have produced up to date is titled Class Act which is the piece that you first saw in the West end of London. In that piece I reversed all the restrictions I had in prison, which most artists take for granted e.g. space and light. The idea behind Class Act was my outlook on the class system and I wanted to reverse roles in the characters in the painting so you have the king of the jungle behind the bar and the elephant, (Which really is the king of the jungle) Sitting at the bar enjoying some champaign with a mouse (which elephants are said to be scared of)! I just wanted to break down those barriers in my painting and show how fun it is to be different. After all, all species can live happily, which is more than can be said for mankind. T

he multi awardwinning Secret Garden Party, the event that set the creative benchmark for festivals in the UK and around the world, announced today that this year’s event, July 20-23, will be the final instalment in its illustrious 15-year tenure as one of the most celebrated events on the summer festival calendar

From a gathering with a few hundred friends the passionately independent event, Secret Garden Party has grown organically over the years. Its fun-loving friendly outlook, its much-loved eccentricity, and its meticulous attention to detail has inspired and enabled a generation of creative artists, musicians and performers to develop and thrive, whilst embracing the core values of friendship, participation and ownership with its audience. It has also been a major hub for leftfield, like-minded people who were eager to ‘escape to reality’

lifestyle SGP has also led the way in bringing internationally recognised Fine Art to an environment normally shunned by that world. Frieze’s Michelangelo Bendandi has in turn introduced several renowned installation artists such as the Italian Edoardo Tresoldi, Robert Montgomery and Les Merchants. The Garden Party has also introduced new visual productions to raise the bar for the infamous Saturday Night Spectacular - 2014 featured stunning water-based holograms and aerial displays of LED ‘falling stars’ from Newsubstance and R5 Air Displays – never before seen in the UK. In 2015 a giant animation screen was created featuring many of our favourite ‘Childish Things’ synched into a firework and laser spectacular. Lately working with the technical producer of Danny Boyle’s Olympic shows the final extravaganza of a show promises to leave jaws firmly on the floor. Inspired by the original ethos of Glastonbury and Burning Man the Secret Garden Party’s founder Head Gardener, aka Fred Fellowes, has succeeded in placing his own particular and idiosyncratic stamp on this very special event making it quite unlike anywhere else in existence. This vision, commitment and enthusiasm

for bringing artistic communities together has been, and continues to be, a labour of love. With many awards under its belt since inception this achievement has been recognised by the live event industry and public alike. Music is clearly an integral part of Secret Garden Party, and with over 15 music stages covering the 100-acre site. It is not only a venue for well-known artists but is committed to nurturing new and upcoming artists, giving them a break long before they become household names such as London Grammar, The XX, Ed Sheeran, Lissie, Public Service Broadcasting, Florence & The Machine and Lily Allen. This year’s Headliners were actually inspired by SGP to start their band Crystal Fighters in the first place. Metronomy’s latest album Summer 08 was inspired by the summer they played SGP. Secret Parties are a big part of the programme and top name DJs play each year. Uniquely, they feel ownership of SGP and come together for fun not work.

From humble beginnings in 2003, the Secret Garden Party’s cultural impact has grown organically throughout its tenure; of the two people with Freddie Fellowes in that first year, one is now working at Burning Man, the other founded Wilderness. From some of the Garden Party’s earliest participants and action camps has arisen great experiential companies such as Bearded Kitten and international Art creatives PirateTechnics. With pioneering fine dining at festivals SGP not only provided the inspiration for the more grown up Wilderness but also the decidedly delinquent MeatLiquour, now an international chain.

Raising awareness of stillbirth and neonatal death and funding child-related causes in the UK

S

et up in 2008 in memory of Peter and Lynn Brady’s second son Jude who was stillborn in 2006. Jude was sadly born asleep on the 16th of June 2006. After his death, his parents Peter and Lynn Brady were taken aback by the fact that around 17 babies were dying every day in the UK and they desperately wanted to do something to help prevent more people going through the pain of losing a child. Latest figures, although improved since then, are still too high, with around 15 babies dying before (after 24 weeks), during or soon after birth in the UK. To date we have helped many causes by funding much needed medical, sensory and play equipment to hospitals, children’s services and individuals.

18

We are delighted to have just launched the new maternity wallets for the Ipswich Hospital, which will keep safe an individuals notes throughout their pregnancy. It also provides vital and helpful information about your baby during pregnancy, and if your are concerned, when to contact the hospital. If successful, we hope to roll this project out nationally, which is why our fundraising is so vital. We regularly receive individual grant requests for children’s causes, ranging from big to small; donations are very gratefully received and help us to make a difference.

For Peter and Lynn’s full story, latest news, further information on causes we have helped, how you can get involved and upcoming events please visit our website: www.judebradyfoundation.co.uk or contact us on: 01473 375034 info@judebradyfoundation.co.uk

Alongside my role as Fashion Editor for EAUX, I am a fashion columnist for various other magazines.

STATEMENT SLEEVES

Bringing all of this together, I am an event Host and Compere So that’s Fashion Candy Style and me…hopefully you know us a little bit better now! At the time of writing this, we are embracing very welcome hot periods of good old British weather. With this in mind I thought I should focus on the current summer fashion trends for men and women, and share styling tips for you all!

From Chic Dresses to holiday must-haves we have it covered!

This summer, it’s all about the sleeve. Generally, not your typical focal point, the sleeve has received a major revamp and is more dramatic, romantic, sexy and creative than ever before.

MAXI DRESSESWRAP DRESSES What is it about a maxi dress that feels so comfy, but looks so fancy? This warm-weather staple can take you from a day on the patio to an evening soirée. Go day-to-day in jersey wrap around , or tie up in sequins for that extra bit of glam.

Well Hello Summer…..Its nice to have you with us! Summer is the season of Weddings, Festivals, Holidays, Concerts, Al Fresco lunches, BBQ’s, and after work drinks outdoors! Getting ready in the summer seems at least marginally easier than getting ready for winter, in that you don’t have to fuss with layers or scarves.

couture CROPPED TROUSERS/ PALAZZO PANTS Whether you are feeling the tailored look or want to wear a pair of wide leg trousers, either are a great option for summer. They will keep you cool under the sun with wide leg and inbetween lengths.

SUMMER SANDALS

TROUSERS/CHINOS

Nothing brings that sunshine feeling quite like sandals. Every daywear/beachwear is anything from flip flops, peep toes, strappy flats for sensible comfort throughout the day.

Summer trousers should be lightweight and breathable materials, such as linen and cottons. With the relaxed fit and smart tailored look, they will complement any other staple wardrobe items.

For the evening, wedges, block heels, and embellished sandals will add a touch of glam to any outfit. Insert Picture 5

BLOUSES/TOPS/ SHIRTS

T-SHIRTS/SHIRTS

Add a touch of sun to your wardrobe with bright blouses, tunics and shirts. Keep it simple for daywear with the cold shoulder style, for a stylish evening look add ruffles, frills and embellishment.

MEN

My pick of the best shirts for summer can come in all colours, cuts and styles. T-shirts should be loose fitting, simple and bold colours to mix and match your daywear. For the evening invest in smart tailored shirts, statement prints with that summer vibe.

Summer and fashion don’t always go hand in hand for men. Create the simple, practical wardrobe to see you through all occasions and beyond! This year its all about adding colour, comfort and flattering.

LIGHTWEIGHT SUITS/ TAILORED SEPARATES

JACKETS Keep it simple and light! Depending on the weather, the likelihood is that you will only need a layer as the evening turns cooler. Bomber style jackets work during the day, for the evening mix your suit jacket to add to your evening attire.

2/3 piece suits may seem like a commitment in summer, but there is an added benefit to owning one. You can break all the pieces up to wear separately to enhance any look. Opt for Cotton, Chino or linen to create a versatile wardrobe.

FOOTWEAR For the best men’s summer shoes, I’m thinking sandals, loafers, brogues and soft espadrilles are a great option for daywear. For the evening and special occasions, smart suit shoes will work with any outfit.

T

he world of work is changing at a fast pace and the speed of this process is only going to accelerate. Many jobs, including professional ones, are being automated, while new roles and responsibilities are being created. Neil Tetley, Headteacher at Woodbridge School, explains what this means for young people today and how his philosophy has evolved to create the kind of education which is preparing pupils to be strong and resilient for a rapidly changing world. “While academic achievements and results remain important, that may not be enough in the competitive future job market. Therefore, it is vital that young people develop the skills and attributes needed for the modern world. Skills such as creativity, problem solving, leadership and resilience will help to prepare young people for life beyond education. These can be

Century Education

developed through a traditional range of academic and extracurricular opportunities, but I believe that schools can do more and do better which is why we are adopting a new approach. “At Woodbridge, we are looking to develop these vital characteristics in a much more explicit way through coaching and mentoring each pupil throughout their life at the school. Our pupils are enriching their education through developing independent confidence, problem-solving and creativity skills as part of the everyday experience at Woodbridge School. They are growing these attributes through activities both inside and outside the classroom. For example, in biology lessons pupils will look at photosynthesis and discuss resilience i.e. what do we do when we are stuck? And in drama, pupils will produce a devised piece and think about the nature of collaboration. It is our belief that education needs to evolve. “A modern education with a focus on the individual is something we are very

passionate about delivering at Woodbridge School. We help pupils to flourish and enjoy their education, whilst discovering and developing their individual talents and exploring new skills. We are very proud of our recent achievements with pupils of all ages flourishing in sports and music at a national level. It is fantastic to see young Year 6 pupils taking their first steps in business with a Market Day, and sixth-form language pupils have recently enjoyed an immersive Spanish exchange trip, living and working in Salamanca. “At Woodbridge School, we aren’t just ‘doing what we’ve always done’, but adapting while retaining academic rigour to meet the demands that young people will face in 2025, 2030 and beyond.” Woodbridge School is a leading independent school in Suffolk for pupils aged 4-18, which develops inquisitive and resilient young adults who are prepared for modern life. Suffolk welcomes back ‘Walk with a Fork’ foodie

Extravaganza

Back for its fifth year, East of England’s foodie extravaganza ‘Walk with a Fork’ makes a return to Suffolk on Sunday 3rd September

W

alkers will embark on an eight mile amble around the picturesque estate of Helmingham Hall near Otley, which has just been awarded garden of the year by the Historic House Association, while indulging on fresh and tasty treats from local food and drink producers at stops along the way. ‘Walk with a Fork’ is the flagship event for Ormiston Families, the East of England’s leading family charity.

40

Helmingham Hall owner and Ormiston Families’ president, Lady Tollemache, has chosen a new route around the estate including views, architecture and hidden valleys not usually seen by members of the public. Gavin Lamb, relationship and events manager at Ormiston Families said: “We always look forward to ‘Walk with a Fork’ and enjoying the great local food and drink from around East Anglia and the beautiful scenery of the countryside, all while raising vital funds which allow us to continue our work with children, young people and families throughout the region. “We are grateful to Helmingham Hall for having us and our

sponsors and all of our fantastic suppliers.” Proceeds from ‘Walk with a Fork’ will be used to support Ormiston Families’ work providing services to support children and young people across East Anglia, helping to improve their life chances. Identifying and responding to the needs of children, whatever challenges they face, the charity’s vision is of a world in which every child will be loved, nurtured and valued. Tickets are £23 per person and children under 5 go free. Dogs are welcome. To book tickets please visit: www.ormistonfamilies.eventbrite.com For more information please visit www.ormiston.org

River Cruising for 2018

European

exciting itineraries visiting some of Europe’s most stunning rivers, canals and valleys

F

red. Olsen Cruise Lines has

44

announced the launch of its new dedicated cruise programme by river boat, unveiled in its new ‘European River Cruising by Fred. Olsen’ brochure. Fred. Olsen is now offering European river cruise holidays, between 5th

April and 3rd November 2018, on board 156-guest river boat, Brabant, that went on general sale in May.

Fred. Olsen will be operating its new river cruise programme – taking in some of Europe’s most beautiful rivers, including the Danube, Rhine, Main and Moselle – on a total of 30 departures in 2018, on durations ranging from five to 25 nights, complemented by a selection of high-quality chargeable shore excursions, designed to enhance guests’ experience of the destination. Fred. Olsen will be bringing its unique style of ‘destination exploration’ to the river cruise market, with exciting itineraries visiting some of Europe’s most stunning rivers, canals and valleys. Guests can choose to sail the breath-taking Danube, taking in the major cities and wildlife-rich Danube Delta; savour the highlights of the heart of Europe, along the twists and turns of the Moselle, Rhine and Main valleys; or enjoy a ‘taster’ cruise to Amsterdam, when the tulips are in full bloom. Importantly, Fred. Olsen has also incorporated a large amount of scenic cruising in daylight hours into its new river cruise itineraries, so that guests can make the most of the spectacular scenery on offer at the best time of the day.

Built in 2006, 110-metrelong Brabant is a stylish and comfortable river cruise boat, and has everything that guests will need to make their holiday a memorable one: from bright and spacious public areas, to wellequipped bedrooms and ample deck space, from which to enjoy the superb views. With just four decks – Haydn Deck 1, Strauss Deck 2, Mozart Deck 3 and Sun Deck 4 – and fewer than 80 rooms and suites, staffed by 40 crew members, Brabant has the intimate and friendly feel that Fred. Olsen’s guests know and love. Brabant’s classic design is smaller than many river boats, so guests will enjoy the usual hallmarks of Fred. Olsen’s ‘closer’ approach to cruising. In keeping with Fred. Olsen’s ocean-going fleet, this smallerscaled vessel has the style, atmosphere and elegance of a country house hotel. Cherry wood interiors and contemporary colours combine to make guests feel relaxed from the moment that they step on board. Juliette balconies with panoramic windows are a feature of many of the rooms, so that guests can enjoy expansive views of Europe’s most impressive waterways.

Fred. Olsen guests will also feel at home on board Brabant, with English spoken throughout and all transactions conducted in Pounds Sterling. Their taste will also be reflected in the cuisine, customer service and shore tours on offer. All holidays featured in the new ‘River Cruising by Fred. Olsen’ brochure are based on fly-cruises, and include return flights from / to a London airport and transfers to / from the boat. Cruise-only options are also available. As with its ocean cruises, peace of mind and relaxation start from the moment that guests choose a Fred. Olsen holiday! Fred. Olsen’s new river cruise programme will be reinforced by its industry-leading Enjoyment Promise: if guests book at least 12 weeks in advance, on cruises of five nights or more, and find that the cruise is not for them within 24 hours of sailing, they just need to let Reception know on board and Fred. Olsen promises to arrange and pay for their flight back to the UK from the next port and repay the cost of their cruise. Summer in St Kitts

H

iking through the thick vegetation of the rainforest up the dormant volcano Mount Liamuiga to arrive at its peak, some 2800 feet above sea level, and the beauty of the island of St Kitts becomes clear. It offers a natural landscape that is relatively untouched, and a unique take on Caribbean life that stays true to its roots. St Kitts is only a small island relative to the rest of the Caribbean, but with its own international airport, an annual music festival, a UNESCO world heritage site as well as many beautiful beaches, it could be just the Caribbean island for you. Shaped a little like an upturned bottle of rum ready to pour, the 176sq m of St Kitts sits just south of St Barths and close to Antigua. The island stretches from the northern Black Rocks and Mount Liamuiga to Brimstone Hill in the north west and down to the capital Basseterre where the bottle starts to narrow. In the bottle neck are the beaches of Frigate Bay whilst at the very rim sits Cockleshell Bay overlooking The Narrows that separates St Kitts from its twin island of Nevis.

escape Most will start their journey in capital Basseterre, a lively town and cruise ship port centred around its historic Independence Square. And it is here that the 21st St Kitts Music Festival will take place from 22nd to 24th June 2017, with a line-up that includes Goo Goo Dolls, Shabba Ranks and Lyrikal. Around 10 miles from Basseterre is Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site that speaks of the island’s military history. For another dash of history, Romney Manor, once a plantation and estate is now where they make batik clothes and gifts to ancient methods. One of the things that St Kitts does particularly well is places to stay. There are no mega resorts here but rather authentic accommodation that you’d be hard pressed to find anywhere else. Ottley’s Plantation Inn with its white wraparound balcony and colonial feel is an 18th century converted sugar mill at the base of Mount Liamuiga. Whilst nearby, Belle Mont Farm is a 400 acre organic farm where you can feel good about your holiday knowing that everything you eat has been produced on the farm. For Caribbean dream worthy beaches many head south to Friar’s Bay, and you can opt for north or south depending on whether you fancy the calmer

waters of the Caribbean Sea on the south or the north side lapped by the Atlantic Ocean. Frigate Bay on the south side is home to the Carambola Beach Club where you can lounge in the love seats and day beds by day before freshening up for a feast of freshly caught spiny lobster salad. Its unobstructed views out to Nevis are what draw many to Cockleshell Bay, along with its pure white sand and places to grab a bite to eat during a busy day of relaxing! St Kitts’ Vervet Monkeys, that are said to outnumber people on the island can be found here, ready to swipe the food and drinks of the unsuspecting. Close to Cockleshell Bay and perhaps even more secluded is Banana Bay and it is here that the Park Hyatt opened their newest hotel in March 2017. Whilst luxury is definitely on the menu at the Park Hyatt, it’s still relatively small at 126 rooms and draws on the heritage of the island with offerings like morning yoga on the lawn next to the sugar mill. A small, luxurious and athenticsounds a lot like St Kitts. Your Caribbean (www. yourcaribbeantravel.com) is a bespoke Caribbean and honeymoon specialist, www.yourcaribbeantravel.com or info@yourcaribbeantravel.com.

pening its doors in January 2017, Philip Davies Estate Agency is one of the newest agents to grace the town. Formed by Philip Bird in December 2016, Philip Davies is looking to offer that something different to the house sellers of Suffolk.

Philip Bird of Philip Davies says, “I first had the idea of my own agency when I was working for Abbotts Countrywide, and I was looking at how much vendors were getting charged for the sale of their properties. I quickly realised that there was a lot more that could be done to put the power of the sale back in the hands of the client”. “With that in mind I came up with our main USP and one of the things that is helping

us make waves in the Ipswich market. We guarantee to beat any commission rate from any agent. This has helped us establish ourselves as a go to (Value) agency with the added bonus of not cutting down on our client service”. So far Philip Davies has seen a market share grow on a weekly bases, and with the current state of the housing market are selling properties as quickly as the day they are listed on Rightmove, or a For Sale board has gone up on

Workplace

dressing down - or up?

S

o how do you dress for work? How are you told to dress? Perhaps there are just unspoken expectations, and if so are they comparable for men and women? Workplace dress codes have come in for scrutiny, with the case of the woman sent home to put her high heels on, and other women told to wear short skirts or unbutton their shirts. High, tight and short seems to be the new uniform to convey the image of a modern working woman. And what have the men been told? Nothing other than the irony that, for men, more comfortable and informal clothes are now acceptable in most workplaces. Sauce for the goose is not for the gander! In an age when political correctness rules and we all know how unlawful it is to discriminate between the sexes, it is all rather odd. Perhaps the message is so mixed up because of the way many younger women

66

choose to dress. In the age of decadent celebrity, the new smart is often very sexed-up indeed, the curved are very curvy. Of course it’s a free country, but what message are young women taking in about how they should look? A petition started by the woman sent home in flat shoes resulted in a government report that is worth a look: search for High heels and workplace dress codes and you will see what a hot topic this is. Employers are allowed to say, within reason, what image they wish their staff to present. If staff appearance or image is important to the job, which it often is, then a Dress Policy can be enforced. Provided comparable boundaries and guidance are given to both genders, they can be given. So smart can mean smart and be interpreted in a male and female way. That assumes though that there is a fair comparator: what should he be walking around in if she is wearing high heels? Comparable comfort? I very much doubt it. Smart for him probably means well-polished,

formal but comfy flat shoes, which is fine unless she has to wear smart high heels. So there should be no imposition of high heels or short skirts, or indeed skirts at all unless both sexes have to wear them! If these are troubled issues for you, consider your options. An employer may not even realise that there is a problem and a quiet word may be enough. If it’s not and there is discrimination the law may be on your side. Whatever, if you are made to feel uncomfortable about what you wear at work, take advice, put your foot down and dig your heels in!
