A sample chapter from "Design by Nature" (New Riders, 2011), a design theory book that explores the processes and principles of nature, along with their physical expressions of pattern, shape, order, symmetry and other ways in which nature functions with seamless usefulness and beauty. It is a practical book for designers—and for anyone interested in solving problems creatively and effectively using nature as mentor. The book contains exercises and designer process studies (Sagmeister, Kenya Hara, Jonathan Harris, John Langdon, Ellen Lupton, etc.), as well as including work from street artist Banksy, nature artist Andy Goldsworthy, MC Escher, and architect Buckminster Fuller. The foreword is written by Debbie Millman, president emerita of the AIGA (American Institute of Graphic Artists). The first chapter, "Aesthetics: Enjoy the Ride" includes distinctions between simplicity and emptiness, wabi sabi and grunge, and the truth of beauty.
