Canterbury’s bright future

I’ve described the 2011 Christchurch earthquakedevastating both in terms of loss of life and damage to property - as my toughest time as Prime Minister.

What stood out then – and still does today - is the resilience and unity Cantabrians displayed in the face of adversity.

From the outset, it was clear the city wouldn’t be defined by the earthquake, but rather by the courage, determination, and the strength and spirit of its residents.

The desire to rebuild and create something stronger and more vibrant than before means, thirteen years later, Otautahi Christchurch –the city I grew up in - has a lot to be proud of.

The restoration of so many of the city’s landmarks and the revitalization of the city centre reflects this determination to build back better.

Innovative architecture, coupled with state-of-the-art infrastructure, have transformed the city into an attractive and vibrant hub.

From boutique shops to cuttingedge start-ups, the CBD is again filled with energy and opportunity - and recent statistics tell a powerful story.

Inner city living is also back, with more people now living inside the ‘Four Aves’ than before the quake, and employment in the area is continuing to climb.

What’s been called the ‘Great Southern Migration’ has seen more than 15,000 people move to Canterbury from abroad in the year to November 2023.

Christchurch has always been a city of pioneers and innovators, and that spirit is still alive today, with many start-ups and technology companies now calling the Garden City home.

Canterbury’s traditional industries also continue to give the region a strong base.

On top of those core industries, there’s also no doubt that Canterbury’s future will include many new and innovative businesses, some of which are highly scalable and have enormous growth potential.

It’s easy to see why there’s a renewed sense of optimism and confidence in the region.

ANZ’s Business Outlook survey shows that business confidence in Canterbury turned positive in November 2023 for the first time in more than two years.

In the coming months and years, as New Zealand’s economy bounces back from the current downturn, Canterbury has an important role to play.

The same courage and determination that was on display after the quake, is still evident.

Fuelled by a supportive ecosystem that nurtures creativity, innovation, and collaboration, it’s clear the region’s entrepreneurial spirit is thriving.

It’s a bright future and, knowing what Cantabrians are capable of, it’s one that fills me with great optimism.

Sir John Key retired as Chairman of ANZ in March. CT

Protecting employee wellbeing

The recent determinations of the Employment Relations Authority, as well as the Courts’ recent decisions, demonstrate that hurt and humiliation as a result of an unsafe work environment will not be taken lightly. Employers must include mental health and wellbeing as a key priority in their treatment of people, or will risk facing significant claims for compensation.

The determinations of Parker v Magnum Hire, Perry v The Warehouse Group, CroninLampe v The Board of Trustees of Melville High School and GF v Comptroller of NZ Customs Service demonstrate that there is an obligation for employers, as much as reasonably practicable, to remove any psychological risks for employees. In removing these risks, the employer is creating the safe working environment as required under the Health and Safety at Work Act.

The claimants in these cases demonstrated some form of mental injury as a result of their work environment, whether it be anxiety, depression, PTSD or burnout. These injuries were contemplated in deciding how much to provide them in compensation for hurt and humiliation under section 123(1)(c) (i) of the Employment Relations Act.

In the decision of GF v Comptroller of NZ Customs Service, the Chief Judge asserted that there is an obvious need for the bands for compensation to be adjusted to remain in line with inflation.

These bands are now as follows:

• Band 1: low-level loss/damage = $0 - $12,000

• Band 2: mid-level loss/damage = $12,000 - $50,000

• Band 3: high-level loss/damage = over $50,000

In the Parker determination, the Authority awarded damages in alignment with the decision made in GF, which demonstrates that the higher bands are being followed. In Perry, the employee was paid almost $50,000, and in Parker, the employee was awarded $105,000 for hurt and humiliation; this was for three incidents: $50,000 for unjustified disadvantage from bullying, $50,000 for constructive dismissal and $5,000 for unjustified advantage for suspension. Mrs and Mr Cronin-Lampe respectively received $85,000 and $63,750 in hurt and humiliation.

If your organisation truly cares about employee wellbeing, it is essential to think more deeply than a few wellbeing rituals. If employers and people managers do not take employment relations seriously through ensuring that employees are working in a psychologically safe environment and procedures are being followed properly, they may pay for the consequences later (literally).

Taking a long-term approach to growth

The Christchurch City Council has a huge role to play in what should be a golden decade for Christchurch and Canterbury.

To provide some observations on how they do that, in April we made a submission on the Council’s Draft Long Term Plan (LTP) 2024-34. This is the plan that outlines the Council’s operating, spending and investment intentions for the next 10 years.

Given the record number of submissions received by the Council on its LTP, I wanted to provide you with an overview of our positioning and key messages that made up our submission, reflecting what we heard from our members and the wider business community.

Firstly, the Council must be focused on ensuring we remain an affordable city, supported by high-quality and efficient services.

Every business in Christchurch has been impacted by the same inflationary pressures and rising costs that the Council has, yet few would be comfortable, nor get away with raising prices by 14 percent right now.

This leads to the point that cutting costs and cutting services are not the same thing. Much has been said in the draft LTP about ‘getting back to the basics,’ but unfortunately, this has been a line used many times and with a focus on external rather than internal ‘basics,’ without much success or obvious impact.

Like businesses, the first focus for the Council should be improving efficiencies, removing bureaucracy, and ensuring that staffing levels and capability are aligned with efficiently

delivering core services and driving Christchurch forward into the 2030s; not talking about cutting services.

Taking that lens of working on efficiencies and mitigating rising costs, this should also be balanced with more transparency and clearer accountability on the delivery of outcomes and improved levels of service, not just a focus on the amount of money spent on projects as an indicator of success.

Another important point we made was that Christchurch is the main centre in Canterbury.

While not required to by law, careful consideration should be given to ensure that decisions made in Christchurch are not at the expense of wider Canterbury but support it to thrive.

All opportunities to collaborate and share value across Hurunui, Waimakariri, Selwyn and Mid Canterbury should be considered as part of the leadership role Christchurch City Council has in our region. What is good for Canterbury is good for Christchurch and vice versa.

Business Canterbury will continue to advocate on behalf of our members for a regulatory environment more favourable to innovation, productivity, and sustainable growth. We look forward to commenting on the final Long Term Plan in due course.

The universal adoption of 90-day trial periods in New Zealand Expanding opportunities

As of Saturday, the 23rd of December 2023, 90day trial periods have now been made accessible to all employers, offering a unique opportunity for smoother employment and onboarding, with hopes the new regulation will contribute positively to the country’s economic and social fabric.

Before this change in employment regulation, the 90-day trial periods were only confined to businesses with fewer than 20 employees. This change implies that every business, regardless of size, can implement the 90-day trial period when extending employment opportunities to individuals.

The growth of accessibility for employers aims to democratise

the utilisation of trial periods, empowering all employers across New Zealand to use this tool in their hiring processes. The new shift reflects a broader commitment to employers, providing them with equal opportunities and streamlining hiring protocols for businesses big and small. This regulatory change is anticipated to have a positive impact on the job landscape. It could potentially lower the barriers of entry for many job seekers, especially those who are entering new industries or the workforce for the first time. This could lead to more diverse and dynamic workplace environments, fostering inclusivity.

National and ACT in collaboration agreed as the new government, wanted to bring back the 90-day trial period after Labour abolished the regulation in 2017 and made the trial only for small businesses with 20 employees or less. National revived the 90-day trial periods in

the hope that it would encourage employers to hire more people they may not have otherwise.

Because of this change in employment regulations, it is essential to note that 90-day trial periods for all employers will not compromise fundamental elements of employment relationships.

Commitments to employees, such as workers’ rights concerning pay, conditions, leave, health, and safety, are left unchanged. Employers can be reassured that the rest of the established framework outlining integrity, fairness and employee well-being remains the same, reinforcing the stability of essential employment aspects.

Now, when incorporating the trial period into an employment agreement, employers and employees, no matter the size of the business, are obligated to participate in the transparent process. This includes reaching

a mutual understanding regarding the outline of the trial period, which requires being documented in writing and executed in good respect. This practice not only ensures a shared understanding of the terms of the agreement but also promotes fairness and equal treatment at the beginning of the employment relationship, aligning with the broader principles regarding building and maintaining positive workplace dynamics.

The ability for all employers of businesses to use 90-day trial periods in New Zealand is a pivotal change in the country’s employment landscape. Understanding the details of this change and using the best practices within their businesses will help employers navigate the evolving employment landscape and make suitable decisions during the hiring process. This regulatory change brings opportunities for employers to enhance their workforce management strategies. CT

The joy of financial minimalism

Are you tired of feeling overwhelmed by money?

Applying minimalist financial practices can help simplify your finances, reduce stress, and focus on what truly matters to you.

Success today is often measured by material wealth. But true success, especially in business, is often the result of careful planning, smart financial decisions, and a focus on sustainable growth. Financial minimalism just makes sense, and dollars.

For those with extra to spend, the idea of living below your means can seem counterintuitive. Financial minimalism isn’t about depriving yourself; it’s about prioritising and understanding the value of financial freedom and security. You deserve luxuries, but you also don’t deserve the stress that comes with struggling to keep them.

You’ve likely heard of minimalism in design, which involves using the simplest and fewest elements for maximum effect. Financially, minimalism translates to keeping things lean and mean, focusing on essential spending, cutting waste, and squeezing maximum value from resources.

If a business adopted financial minimalism, it’d work to lower its operating costs and improve efficiency and scalability. The same ethos applies to individuals: cut out anything that slows you down or adds no value, automate boring tasks, keep things simple, and eliminate unnecessary steps.

Adopting a mindset that prioritises financial simplicity and intentionality starts with clearly defining your financial goals. Whether you want to be debt-free, save for retirement, or fund a passion project, the foundation of minimalism is clarifying what you truly value and what your financial goals are.

Next, declutter your expenses. Review your spending regularly and cut out anything that doesn’t add value to your life or align with your goals. This might mean cancelling unused subscriptions, avoiding

impulse purchases, and opting for simpler, less costly options. Work on paying off debts aggressively and stripping your budget down to the basics while still giving yourself wiggle room.

Further, get serious about your financial footprint. Consolidate your bank accounts and adjust your spending habits to reduce the number of financial products you use. Automating your savings and payments minimises this hassle. Set up automatic transfers to your savings account and automate bill payments to ensure you never miss a payment and avoid late fees. This also keeps your financial plan on track with minimal effort.

Look for ways to reduce your spending without sacrificing your quality of life. This might mean shopping second-hand, repairing instead of replacing items, or choosing home-cooked meals over dining out. Beyond this, set aside time to review your financial status and adjust your budget and spending habits as necessary to stay aligned with your minimalist goals.

Buying quality and not quantity, embracing DIY and second-hand products, and using free financial tools like online resources and budgeting aids are three more ideas for embracing financial minimalism.

What can be a liberating strategy for some is a stark reality for others. It’s important to acknowledge that the ability to live below one’s means and adopt financial minimalism is not just a lifestyle choice for everyone; for many, it’s a necessity.

While financial minimalism champions the benefits of spending less than you earn, this approach presupposes a level of financial security that isn’t accessible to all. For some, minimising expenses is not about saving for the future or investing in financial freedom, but rather about making ends meet in the here and now.

Recognising this privilege is crucial in understanding the wider effects of financial advice and ensuring that conversations about financial minimalism are inclusive, considerate, and cemented in the realities of modern life.

Buying quality and not quantity, embracing DIY and second-hand products, and using free financial tools like online resources and budgeting aids are three more ideas for embracing financial minimalism.

One of the most compelling arguments for living below your means is the power of compounded savings. By consistently spending less than you earn and investing the difference, you create a growing financial resource. Your focus should be on personal growth and less on financial survival.

We all know that when financial constraints don’t pressure you, you make better decisions. Living below your means gives you the luxury of making choices based on long-term benefits rather than immediate financial needs. You’ll then be thinking like the best leaders: patient, analytical, stable, humble, and in control.

We all want to continually improve, but that doesn’t need to come with a maximalist mindset. By maintaining a healthy and realistic budget, making smart and effective investments, only ever using debt strategically, and tightening your grip on spending, you can identify areas for improvement.

Financial minimalism helps you focus on what’s truly important in life. It shifts the focus from materials to experiences, relationships, personal growth, and the pursuit of purposeful goals. CT

The three pillars of effective accounting

Accounting is a crucial aspect of any business, big or small.

It systematically records, analyses, and reports financial transactions to ensure accurate financial statements.

While accounting may seem complex, three fundamental principles serve as the foundation of this discipline. This examines these three accounting rules to understand how they interconnect to provide a comprehensive view of a company’s financial health.

Understanding debits and credits

Before diving into the golden principles of accounting, it is essential to grasp the concept of debits and credits. Debits and credits are entries in the accounting books to record financial transactions. They affect different types of accounts, such as assets, expenses, liabilities, equity, and income.

A debit is an entry made on the left side of an account, while a credit is an entry made on the right side. Debits increase asset and expense accounts but decrease equity, liability, and revenue accounts.

On the other hand, credits increase equity, liability, and revenue accounts but decrease asset and expense accounts. Recording debits and credits for every transaction is crucial to maintaining accurate financial records.

Now that we understand debits and credits, let’s explore the three golden accounting rules. These rules provide guidelines for recording transactions accurately and ensure the integrity of financial statements.

1. Debit the receiver and credit the giver

The first golden rule of accounting states that when dealing with personal accounts, such as individuals or organisations, we should debit the receiver and credit the giver. In other words, if you receive something, you debit the

account; if you give something, you credit the account.

For example, your company purchases $1,000 of goods from Company ABC. In this case, you would debit your Purchase account and credit Company ABC. By debiting the receiver (Purchase account) and crediting the giver (Company ABC), you accurately record the transaction.

These rules ensure that transactions are accurately recorded, enabling the preparation of reliable financial statements.

Consider a situation where you purchase $3,000 worth of goods from Company XYZ. To record this transaction, you would debit the expense (purchase) account and credit the income account.

On the other hand, if you sell $1,700 worth of goods to Company XYZ, you would credit the income account and debit the expense account. This golden rule ensures that the financial statements accurately reflect the company’s profitability.

Interconnecting the three golden rules

While each golden rule has its specific application, they are interconnected and work together to provide a comprehensive view of a company’s financial position.

These rules ensure that transactions are accurately recorded, enabling the preparation of reliable financial statements.

2. Debit what comes in and credit what goes out

The second golden accounting rule applies to real accounts, also known as permanent accounts. Real accounts include assets, liabilities, and equity accounts that carry over from one accounting period to another.

According to this rule, when something comes into the business, you debit the account, and when something goes out, you credit the account.

For instance, consider a scenario where you purchase furniture for $2,500 in cash. To record this transaction, you would debit your Furniture account (what comes in) and credit your Cash account (what goes out). This rule ensures that the financial statements accurately reflect the movement of assets and liabilities.

3. Debit expenses and losses, credit income and gains

The third golden accounting rule focuses on nominal accounts, and temporary accounts are closed at each accounting period’s end. Nominal accounts include revenue, expense, gain, and loss accounts. According to this rule, you should debit expenses and losses while crediting income and gains.

By following these rules, accountants can maintain accurate records of financial transactions, track the movement of assets and liabilities, and assess the business’s profitability.

The systematic application of these principles allows businesses to make informed decisions based on reliable financial information.

Accounting is vital to every business, and understanding its fundamental principles is crucial for financial success. The three golden accounting rules provide a framework for accurately recording transactions and preparing reliable financial statements.

By debiting the receiver and crediting the giver, debiting what comes in and what goes out, and debiting expenses and losses while crediting income and gains, accountants can ensure the integrity of financial records.

These rules intertwine to create a cohesive system that enables businesses to make informed decisions based on accurate and reliable financial information.

So, whether you’re a small business owner or a finance professional, remember to follow these golden rules to maintain the financial health of your organisation. CT

Luxon looks ahead

Prime Minister since November, Christopher Luxon has helmed a coalition that’s largely achieved its 100-day plans. But recent scrutiny over widespread media and public sector layoffs and claiming an accommodation allowance has threatened to derail progress.

Canterbury Today sat down with Botany MP, the Right Honourable Christopher Luxon, on the future of Aotearoa New Zealand.

The cost of living is the average New Zealander’s greatest concern. How do you plan on making the country more liveable?

In the last six years, Government spending grew by 84 percentwhich just pushed inflation and interest rates higher. We’re getting it under control to reduce pressure on inflation and deliver more funding for frontline services, saving more than $7 billion since we came into Government.

We’re clearing away the broken regulations and costs on business that have just pushed prices higher and slowed our economy down. We’ve cancelled the Ute Tax, brought back 90 Day Trials, we’re removing barriers to using international building products from overseas, and we’ve cancelled the fuel tax hikes planned for this and next year.

Our plan is working. Inflation is down to 4 percent, the lowest level since June 2021. Food inflation is down to just 2 percent, the lowest level since May 2021.

Spending responsibly means we can increase funding to public services and support Kiwis with the cost of living. This year’s Budget will prioritise tax relief for low- and middle-income families and more funding for frontline services, like health, education, and law and order.

From next year, the interest on our debt will reach almost $10 billion per year. How can we reverse that while still providing the state services we expect?

For the last five years, Government debt has grown as a proportion of the economy – meaning there’s less left to spend on the frontline services Kiwis expect. We’re focused on reining in wasteful spending and managing the books responsibly so we can reverse that trend.

That doesn’t mean cutting public services that people rely on – it means being very disciplined about new spending and looking hard at where the government is spending taxpayers’ money over the course of many budgets.

The experiences of other countries overseas show that reducing deficits is best done over the course of several years. But as government debt goes down, that interest bill will go down too.

Is our country’s free school lunch program worthwhile?

The Government will be delivering a more efficient Healthy School Lunches Programme, saving taxpayers approximately $107 million a year compared to how Labour funded it, by embracing innovation and commercial expertise. Schools reported in a survey that 9 percent of lunches went untouched in Term

Four last year, which equates to an estimated $30 million worth of surplus food per year. This is not acceptable.

Our new model will use the Government’s significant buying power to significantly reduce wastage, save money on food and give schools more flexibility on what they provide. It also means parents and students can choose to make their own lunch.

The cost-of-living crisis has put big pressure on families from all walks of life – especially those Kiwis really struggling to make ends meet. The most recent child poverty figures show rates of material hardship have increased significantly in recent years, reflecting those pressures.

Christopher Luxon

We are undertaking a full redesign of the way the programme is implemented based on commercial experience, data, and evidence. This enables the Healthy School Lunches Programme to continue, alongside a new targeted programme to provide food to 10,000 two-tofive-year-olds who attend low-equity, not-for-profit, community-based early learning services, funded using the cost savings found in the lunch programme.

Many justice officials have said your crackdown on gangs could backfire and increase gang membership rates. Why are they wrong?

For too long, gang members have behaved as if they are above the law. They are not. That’s why we have introduced legislation to ban all gang insignia in public, granted greater powers to stop criminal gangs from gathering in groups and communicating, and give greater weight to gang membership at sentencing.

Gangs have recruited more than 3000 members over the last five years, a 51 percent increase. Meanwhile, gang-related violence, public intimidation and shootings have significantly escalated, with violent crime up 33 percent.

We’re confident the plan will work. We have seen these tools used effectively in Australia, and we

know the 2013 banning of patches in all government buildings has been successful.

How will you reduce poverty, and what do the most recent figures show?

The cost-of-living crisis has put big pressure on families from all walks of life – especially those Kiwis really struggling to make ends meet. The most recent child poverty figures show rates of material hardship have increased significantly in recent years, reflecting those pressures.

Our big focus is on beating inflation, rebuilding the economy, and supporting low- and middle-income families with the cost of living. That includes supporting families with the cost of childcare through our FamilyBoost policy, delaying fuel tax hikes, and delivering income tax relief as part of this year’s Budget.

Why will boot camps work now, and what young offenders will go to the academies?

We’re creating more tools to curb the most serious and persistent young offenders. This includes the establishment of a new Young Serious Offender designation and our youth academies.

The military-style academies will be backed by a rehabilitative and trauma-informed care approach to help these young people turn their lives around and reduce their risk of reoffending. This is a key new aspect of the programme, which will ensure improved success. Participants in the pilot will be repeat serious youth offenders who are currently in the youth justice system; once in place, attendance will be court ordered.

I’m confident this programme will deliver the real change needed for many youth offenders,

providing them a disciplined and structured environment to help turn their life around.

Labour’s $340m on emergency housing largely offered families atrocious living conditions and lined motelier pockets. How do you plan to do emergency housing, right, and is social housing the way?

Too many children in New Zealand are growing up in motels – and we’re determined to fix the problem. That’s why we have set a target of reducing the number of households in emergency housing by 75 percent by 2030. We’re making a number of changes to make sure we deliver, including clarifying eligibility, reviewing current tenancies to support those most in need, and ensuring that more houses are built as part of National’s Going Big for Housing Growth initiative.

16 Cover Story | Christopher Luxon

We’re also prioritising families who have been in emergency housing for longer than twelve weeks to the top of the social housing waitlist – ensuring we get them out of emergency motels sooner. A review of Kāinga Ora to make sure social houses are being delivered efficiently for the money taxpayers spend is also underway.

Emergency housing is a complex issue, and it will require sustained and co-ordinated effort over multiple years to achieve our aim of ending its large-scale use.

When will the Covid inquiry be complete?

More than 13,000 submissions were made on the terms of reference Royal Commission into COVID-19 Lessons. It is clear there is a real need for the community to have their voices heard on the matters relating to the pandemic that affected them the most.

We are committed to expanding the scope of the inquiry, and ensuring we learn all we can from the response. Decisions on the scope of the inquiry will be prioritised this quarter, with us looking to announce the outcome before the end of June.

Which nations are New Zealand’s most important international connections and why?

New Zealand’s geographical location, cultural and demographic composition, and our export-based economy are important to our identity, reputation, and influence; and all inform and steer the relationships we foster in the world.

Australia is our only formal ally, biggest economic partner and home to NZ’s largest diaspora. As a Pacific nation ourselves, we are focused on comprehensive and sustained engagement with the island nations of the Pacific.

For the last five years, Government debt has grown as a proportion of the economy – meaning there’s less left to spend on the frontline services Kiwis expect. We’re focused on reining in wasteful spending and managing the books responsibly so we can reverse that trend.

We have close ties with a range of countries across the wider Indo-Pacific region – including in Southeast Asia, India, Japan, Korea, and the USA, together with China. As part of strengthening our trade and security relationships in the region, I recently visited the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand – all big players providing lots of opportunity for New Zealand in the Indo-Pacific. With exports accounting for one in four jobs, you’ll see me and my Ministers

getting out into the world more to promote New Zealand’s interests. Developing closer trade relationships with existing and new partners is all part of our plan to rebuild the economy. We’ve committed to the ambitious target of doubling exports by value in the next decade, demonstrating our drive to forge new opportunities for Kiwi exporters and deepen existing relationships. By leveraging those opportunities, we can rebuild the economy, lift incomes, and fund the great public services Kiwis deserve. CT

An economic injection

According to a recent projection, the highly anticipated Te Kaha stadium in Christchurch could potentially pump $50 million annually into the local economy.

The stadium, which is set to be roofed and is scheduled to be up and running in mid-2026, carries a total budget of $683 million. The funding for this project comes from a mix of central government contributions and ratepayers’ contributions, which will be spread over a period of 30 years, with an average weekly contribution of approximately four dollars.

Venues Otautahi, the business that will operate Te Kaha, believes that its estimate of $50 million in economic impact is conservative. The estimate is based on the assumption of 200 annual events, including a handful of concerts, sporting events, and business gatherings.

However, it’s important to note that the $50 million figure is just a piece of the larger economic puzzle. Factors such as promoting Christchurch and enhancing its global image must be considered. The stadium’s most significant impact is expected to be on the quality of life for residents and businesses alike. Half a million people will likely attend events at Te Kaha annually, with 100,000

of these being visitors to the city who will spend approximately $28 million on accommodation, food, and leisure activities. The stadium is also expected to employ over 1,000 temporary staff.

Adding in the local employment and the supply of goods would result in approximately $50 million of direct contribution to the local economy once the venue is operational in 2026. Business owners and employees are expected to benefit directly and indirectly through increased tourism and spending during events.

Peter Morrison, the president of Hospitality NZ Canterbury branch, emphasised the impact on hospitality businesses, saying that the last 12 years have been incredibly tough for the industry. He believes that Te Kaha is the muchneeded boost the city needs. He also predicts that the stadium will draw large events that have been missing from Christchurch for the past decade, which will have a significant ripple effect on local businesses. He cited the example of Taylor Swift’s 2024 Australian tour dates, which generated significant

interest among New Zealand fans. The demand for concerts in New Zealand is so high that fans are willing to travel internationally to see her perform. Eden Park boss Nick Sautner stated that if Taylor Swift were to perform in New Zealand, Eden Park would be filled to its capacity with over 60,000 people for every concert.

The Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia reported that Swift’s tour in the United States had boosted travel and tourism in the region, adding an estimated $5 billion to the global economy. This

suggests that backing events or projects can be beneficial if the economy is in a weak phase and you’re trying to stimulate spending at a time when demand is low.

Te Kaha stadium represents a significant investment in Christchurch. The impact extends beyond the initial build, with local businesses hoping to see a boost in customers, job creation and highlighting our city across the globe. CT

Grater Goods

Toni Morrison once said, “If there is a book that you want to read, but it hasn’t been written yet, then you must write it”. This moving sentiment is exactly what Flip Grater, founder of Grater Goods, did when she noticed a gap in the vegan food market; she simply created the food she wanted to eat.

The brand was born from a simple plant-based chorizo and grew into a vegan antipasti dream now stocked in supermarkets nationwide. Their goal is to offer sustainable change without compromising on having a good time. “Ethical hedonism means being able to indulge and treat yourself without having to compromise on things that aren’t great about the world,” says Peter Franks, head chef at Grater Goods.

A seasoned chef, Peter has cooked exclusively in vegan restaurants all over the world. With no formal training, he has pushed himself to grow his skills and learn about the vegan food culture by doing. “I’ve learned a lot about international cuisines and different styles. I was testing the limits of myself and what I could bring.”.

What is your favourite item on the menu?

“I really like our Moroccan salad. It just combines a lot of different components; it really brings the salty and the sweet and some really nice spice blends that I came up with. And it’s actually fun to make. The amount of people that come up to the window after and say ‘That is such a good sauce, I could drink that sauce’. It’s such positive feedback, which is so nice to hear.”

What is your best seller, and why do you think it’s so popular?

“The best seller is always the special burger, no matter what it is, and I

change it every month. Honestly, I think it’s a combination of: It’s sitting right there on our board, so people see it straight away, and our servers are always encouraging people to try the specials.

Also, our core of regulars. We have people that come in just for the specials to see what the new thing is. The regulars are usually people who are really interested in a plantbased lifestyle, so they like to see the diverse things that we can do.”

Do you develop the entire menu?

“We have Grater Goods products which is the main arm of the company. So, what I’m trying to do is show people how to use those products in different meals. That’s a component that I use quite a lot, but the delivery and presentation and the rest of it, that’s me.

“If something’s quite popular, I’ll keep it on the menu; less popular, I’ll say ok, cool, maybe it’s time for a change. We just flow through ideas.”

KFT- Kentucky Fried Tofu

“The first crunch, the first bite, that’s the dredge that we use. That’s our secret herbs and spices mix, there’s gluten-free four to give it that crispiness and then the spices and herbs to lift it up. The juices inside are the marinade we use. It’s a “chicken” stock that gets inside and makes it really punchy.

Key elements - “The texture. That’s the reason everyone is surprised. They hear tofu, and they say, no, I’m not into tofu; it tastes bland. We say just try this one because it’s unlike anything you’ve tried. It’s got that flakiness, and the marinade goes all the way through. We’re so happy with how this one came together.”

Grater Goods Cream Cheese and Pesto

“This is soy-based with a bit of coconut oil in there to help it set. And then some nutritional yeast and some lemon and other things to brighten it up. The garlic and chives come through quite strongly with that.

24

“Surprising thing about this one is that it’s nut-free, that’s pumpkin seeds. The sundried tomatoes come through pretty strong; that’s the driver for me.”

Vegan White Chocolate and Strawberry Crème Brulé

“I wanted to do a vegan white chocolate; for the last six months, I’ve had a passionfruit, your traditional vanilla cream with a passionfruit jelly on top, and I really wanted to change that while still keeping the format the same. So, I made the custard with strong white chocolate flavours, and then strawberry is a nice little counterpart with kafir lime to give it that extra zing. So, you should have those three layers of flavours as well as the texture.

“I was really happy with the texture; I was worried it wouldn’t set nicely. But actually, without very many iterations, it kind of just fell into place.”

Key elements -“It’s a soy and coconut base. It’s really nice; it

tastes like candy with a hint of lime. I really wanted to use kafir lime, I like a bit more exotic flavour. And we have a local source, a local tree that I know of.

“And then you get into the custard, and it’s nice and thick, quite white chocolatey. Which is really the intention. I really didn’t want it to be so-so; I like to make the flavours really get you.”

Producing flavours that encourage more people to eat sustainably, Grater Goods balances accessibility and inclusion for all diets. The industrial-style bistro at 105 Orbell Street, Sydenham, can accommodate a range of diet requirements.

Visit the welcoming team for a sit-down meal or to browse their specialty products. You can also find Grater Goods in supermarkets nationwide, or shop on their website www.gratergoods.co.nz CT

New year, new Government, new tax rules

With the new financial year comes

new tax rules.

As promised, the new Government has reversed some of the tax changes made by the last Government, but crucially one key tax change was not reversed.

Property changes

There have been some key tax changes in the residential property space. Firstly, for sale agreements entered into on or after 1 July, the “bright line” test is being restored to the original 2-year test for all properties regardless of purchase date. Secondly, from 1 April, interest deductions are being phased back in for all residential rental properties regardless of purchase dates. These changes are much welcomed as the 2021 rule changes resulted in overtaxation and unnecessary compliance. To help fund the changes above, and July 2024 personal tax cuts,

depreciation is being removed from commercial buildings (again).

Trust tax rate

Perhaps slightly surprising is the fact that the National-led Government did not take the opportunity to reverse the increase in the trust tax rate to 39% that was announced in the 2023 budget. Government Officials accept that this change will create over-taxation and additional compliance.

Finance Minister, Nicola Willis has publicly stated that it is National policy that the trust tax rate should be aligned to the top personal rate. National have previously stated that they wish to reduce the top personal tax rate, but have ruled out doing so in this parliamentary term due to fiscal constraints.

One key change from the original proposal is that a modest carve-out of $10,000 in income for trusts before the 39% rate applies.

Game Plan

Technology innovator Power Trip has launched an app that will redefine how companies plan to transition their vehicle fleets to more sustainable alternatives.

A high percentage of New Zealand firms are interested in switching their fleet from petrol or

diesel to electric; but until now, the ‘real-world’ data available to support their decision making has been largely based on ‘guesstimates’. Power Trip’s brand new app called Game Plan makes a fleet’s journey to zero-emissions easy.

With users including Kāinga Ora and Fulton Hogan, Game Plan helps organisations conduct advanced Electric Vehicle (EV) simulations to help fleet and sustainability managers conduct detailed EV feasibility assessments and fleet optimisation analysis.

This Includes what a company might save in terms of spend on fuel and maintenance; and the implications that real world performance, driving range and charging times have when integrating different EVs into the fleet.

Power Trip’s data-driven approach combines geospatial, charging network and EV specification data with data about a fleet’s specific routes and driving requirements. This approach far outperforms traditional spreadsheet-based analysis to enable more confident decision making. Started in 2019, the first iteration of the app had one basic function - to predict the ‘real-world’ range of electric vehicles, and the performance of their battery, based on geospatial data.

Fast forward to today, and Power Trip has had several cash injections from Angel Investors, allowing the team to build out the platform to be a critical decision-making tool for those with hundreds of vehicles in their fleet. CT

BNZ launches tech business hub to empower earlystage technology businesses

New Zealand’s tech sector is set to get a boost thanks to the launch of the country’s first dedicated banking hub for earlystage technology businesses.

The Waikato-based BNZ Tech Business Hub is designed to address the unique needs of earlystage tech companies.

It offers BNZ customers access to bankers with specific training and expertise who are equipped to offer financial services to address the unique challenges and opportunities faced in the technology industries.

Tim Wixon, head of Technology Industries at BNZ, says, “BNZ’s Tech Business Hub is not just a new offering – it represents a philosophical shift in how we approach banking for this sector. Technology businesses have distinct needs which have not historically been met by traditional banking models. Our hub will help fill this gap by offering practical guidance, advice, and tailored services to help accelerate sector growth.”

According to the Technology Investment Network, the top 200 New Zealand tech companies generated the second-largest source of offshore revenue after dairy. The industry is also growing faster than any other in New Zealand and offers salaries around 30 percent higher than the New Zealand average.

“Technology Industries continue to be an increasingly important part of the New Zealand economy. Every year, we see more of our country’s tech companies succeed on the world stage and BNZ remains committed to assist wherever possible”, Tim says.

“The BNZ Tech Business Hub is the next step in our commitment to this important part of our economy, and we look forward to working closely with tech entrepreneurs and innovators to help them achieve their goals.” CT

Simplify, subtract and act

Using friction to make things run smoother

A favourite adage of mine is that ‘change is a constant’ and this is certainly true at the moment; with the recent large scale staff cuts implemented throughout central government and increasing global unrest impacting business confidence.

Given that New Zealand is now in a technical recession and many industries experiencing a downturn, it’s important that business owners and leaders identify what can move business forward to look for opportunities among the uncertainties and then act on these quickly.

Pretty much every industry experiences downturns from time to time, and it’s important to recognise that these are to be expected at some point; there are always ebbs and flows.

The challenge is how to weather the storm during these fluctuations, and ideally, come out stronger than before. If (or when) your business is in this boat, rather than panicking, try to see the uncertainty as an opportunity to sharpen your focus and zoom in on what really moves the needle forward.

Identify your sticking points

Tough times can naturally highlight any areas that may not be performing as well as you’d like. In this sense a downturn may be seen as a gift providing clarity by exposing vulnerabilities, which you can then act on.

Considering vulnerabilities in this way can also stimulate new thinking to make rapid improvements. For example, are there particular services you can build on, expand, or adapt to make them even better for clients, or are there processes you can strengthen or streamline to make life easier for staff or customers.

Perhaps you have too many ways of recording customer information and have room to simplify the systems; maybe expenses and receipts are

and growth. The key is to identify which of your friction points are helpful and focus on those, while eliminating the unhelpful ones.

Sutton also advocates the idea of ‘smart subtraction’ which is to evaluate practices and get rid of any that fail to serve us well. Sounds obvious, but without intentionally stepping back to take a look, it’s easy to get into routines, practices and habits that no longer serve the greater good. So how might you identify these?

“Pretty much every industry experiences downturns from time to time, and it’s important to recognise that these are to be expected at some point; there are always ebbs and flows. ”

still captured manually so there’s opportunity to use software to speed up processing these into your accounts system.

However your business is tracking, it’s important to keep an eye on the big picture. Being able to identify what organisational psychologist

Bob Sutton of Stanford University calls ‘friction points’ in your business may help.

Friction is any kind of obstacle that slows people down, making their jobs unnecessarily difficult and possibly frustrating. There are many examples of friction points; a common one might be a particular meeting that lacks sufficient structure in the agenda and feels a bit rudderless, or double handling of information, or even unnecessary paperwork and reporting.

See what you can ditch

Not all friction is bad; some friction is helpful for creativity, innovation

One of the most logical places to start in terms of strengthening existing processes and practising ‘smart subtraction’ is to look at the technology platforms in your business to see if there are opportunities for simplification or improvement.

Are there ways you can make things more efficient and increase productivity by incorporating some easy-to-use, readily available tools into everyday tasks? For example:

• Scheduling of meetings or tasks - if people are using email to schedule appointments and this is taking multiple interactions, could this be streamlined? Maybe using a tool like Motion to help plan their time, or Calend.ly to make meeting scheduling easier would help

• Recording and summarising meeting minutes - not only can AI tools record a meeting discussion, but they can save time summarising key decision points

and actions. Consider tools such as Otter, Notta or Fireflies

• Improving your writing using tools like Paraphraser to help with report writing or generating proposals

• Capturing information from potential new customersensuring your website has a clear and easy way for people to interact with your businesswhether this be a simple contact mechanism, or a chatbot. There are many options, for example: Livechat, Tawk, or Slaask

• Integrating software that enables automated workflows is an increasingly popular way to use AI in business. If you are already running a CRM, check if it has workflow capabilities (some do). Otherwise, commonly used process automation tools include Zapier, Integrate or IFTTT (If This Then That), or Make.

These few examples will hopefully help get you thinking about possibilities. There are many more business tasks that technology/AI can support. Which you choose will depend on your business needs, the areas you see opportunities for simplification or subtraction, plus of course your level of comfort to use any new or emerging technology to make life easier.

At the moment it might feel a bit overwhelming with so many options, and the need to act fast. Try things out with a few staff or one department before rolling it out across your business.

Remember it’s about subtracting some things and adding others. The important thing is to keep moving forward; a small investment of time, money and effort can make a big difference. CT

An objective sounding board

The benefits of a business mentor

Owning a business can be a dynamic and rewarding challenge filled with opportunities for growth and success. However, it also carries its fair share of risks.

The business landscape has undergone a seismic shift over the past four years. Disruptions have been faced across the board, from financial instability to operational challenges, market fluctuations, regulation changes, and reputation threats. Business owners face a complicated web of risks that can significantly impact their operations.

“All these things take a huge hit on cash flow. As a business owner, you become asset-rich and cash-flow-poor. Uncertainty and unpredictability can be extremely stressful, and this takes a toll on resilience. This is why we need a mentor—to have someone on your side, watching out for you,

to guide and navigate you through the continuous ebbs and flows,” says Louise Neville, Director of Accounting Solutions.

A business mentor can be an invaluable asset. They can provide guidance on navigating the complexities of the current business climate and help you make informed decisions that can mitigate the impact of these risks.

“We help you do everything you can to ensure your cash flow is on track and your business is profitable, so you’re always moving forward—not backwards. For us, it’s about making sure you have financial freedom and lifestyle choice, so you aren’t restricted from doing what you love.”

Louise explains that some businesses accomplish great things independently, but she also emphasises that no one should have to do it alone. “We have also seen many scenarios where owners do business on their own, and they thought their business was profitable, but they weren’t properly

tracking this. It wasn’t until their situation got too hard that they decided to do something about it, and sometimes it can be too late.

A mentor can help you try and turn things around from that point, but it’s far better to have one from the beginning or at least from the growth phase.

“A mentor is not just about the financial side either – we can help in so many different aspects of your business journey. Some of these include resolving issues within your team, getting clarity on everyone’s roles, productivity, investing in assets, financing, cash flow, how to structure your business, your personal life, succession planning for retirement, building your business to achieve its maximum value, handing over your business, and many more.”

Looking at the key habits of successful businesspeople, Louise says commitment to regular mentoring meetings is essential. “Knowing and tracking your results in depth is vital to making

overwhelmed and the goal is too big, too hard, or we don’t know where to start. Break these goals down to 90-day milestones, then into detailed action points. The more steps you have in your action points will help your mind remember and put these into action.

“Put the action points in your calendar, or wherever will help remind you of these, and have someone that can help hold you accountable. Start with the first action point, and just focus on this. Before you know it, you’ll have accomplished your goal.

If you haven’t achieved the goal, then ask yourself, do you really want that? Does that goal align with your purpose?”

Successful business ownership lies in understanding and effectively communicating your purpose.

It’s not just about how you do things but why you do them. The attraction and retention of customers, as well as a solid team, are based on the shared values and purpose of your business.

“Business becomes so much more enjoyable when you are surrounded by like-minded people. You will find that whenever there is conflict or upset, it’s bound to be with those who have different values than you or those who don’t relate to your business’s purpose. Knowing your purpose and having a vision stops you from sweating the small stuff and allows you to steer your business in the right direction.” CT

Using social media effectively

Are you starting a new business, or perhaps in business and unsure if you need, or want to, dive into the social media world?

In this day and age social media is probably the most effective way for your business to gain attraction and new customers. But if you are new to social media or you don’t know where to start, it can be difficult.

You probably have many questions about this new world of technology, what platforms are the best to use? How do I use social media? Don’t stress, we’ll talk about the basics to get you started!

There are hundreds of apps and websites that are used for social media, so how do you go about picking what the best places are to post about your business?

First and foremost, you want to think about who you are targeting and what your business actually is. Most platforms can cater for many different industries although you may

target one platform as your main social media source.

If you have a design and media company your best platform to use would be Instagram. On Instagram when you want to make a post, you have to add a photo or video.

The app is widely used by photographers, designers, selfemployed bosses, and influencers, it’s their first point of contact, their portfolio. If your main target audience is anyone aged between 15 to 30 years old, then Instagram is your go to platform. Now that you have a photo-based platform, where can you grow even bigger?

Instagram has a feature called Reels, where creators can create short portrait videos with music and catchy titles.

However, the ever growing app Tiktok is probably a better way of capturing short 15 to three minute videos. Tiktok, again widely used by Gen Z, is a social media app that allows you to film, edit and create short videos that capture the essence of your company.

On this app, you are more likely to gain more followers if you post a video every day, using relatable hashtags. Your company account will be seen on Tiktok’s ‘For You Page’ if you use trending hashtags, sounds and create trending videos.

If you’re unsure on what to post, scroll through other business accounts that are in the same industry as your’s, this will be able to help you figure out what video and sound trends are new.

You can even have a look at videos that don’t relate to your business brand, they might spark an idea or two for a viral video!

Not all businesses are best to promote through videos, sometimes a simple place where your loyal clients can find you easily is the best way to connect.

A great platform for simple social media is Facebook. Facebook is probably more commonly used on a daily basis here in New Zealand than other countries, meaning it can be a great place for your company to engage with local communities.

However, the ever growing app Tiktok is probably a better way of capturing short 15 to three minute videos. Tiktok, again widely used by Gen Z, is a social media app that allows you to film, edit and create short videos that capture the essence of your company.

Create a page by using your company name, make sure all your contact details and website are linked, use an eye-catching profile and cover photo and start posting! An idea for one of your first posts may be a project you have been working on or a mew service you are providing.

32

Because Facebook and Instagram are both owned by Meta, it means if you post a story, reel or a post onto Instagram, you can automatically ask Instagram to post to your Facebook page as well.

Facebook can be a little bit more difficult to gain followers, especially

if you aren’t on Instagram or Tiktok, the best way to overcome that is by inviting your friends and clients to like your page. Facebook is also the best place to be posting if your target audience is 30 years plus.

So now that you know the basics of the three most used social

media platforms, you can start to experiment and post! If you’re still having trouble, consider hiring a ‘Social Media Manager’ or a ‘Content Creator’, they will have experience and will be solely in charge of creating and making sure your business gets seen on social media!

remember when using any social media platform are relevant and trending hashtags and music (for videos). Make sure your video will be seen by using an idea from an existing video trend (on TikTok and Instagram) and using eye-catching photos and graphics. CT

Minimum wage increase

As a business owner or manager, you need to be ready for the minimum wage rates increase from April 1, 2024.

The details of the increase are:

• Adult minimum wage will go up from $22.70 to $23.15 per hour

• Starting-out and training minimum wage will go up from $18.16 to $18.52 per hour

• All rates are before tax and any lawful deductions, for example,

PAYE tax, student loan repayment, child support.

If you have not yet talked to your accountant, payroll provider or your finance/HR teams now is the time. It is also an opportunity to check your employment records, processes and systems are current.

How to prepare for the increases

1. Advise the team

If you have employees on the minimum wage, let them know about the increase they will be getting. You should send them a letter or email (variation of employment contract) advising them of the new wage.

2. Check your payroll systems and processes

Make sure your payroll provider, accountant, lawyer, HR, or finance people are ready to implement the change.

34

If your system is manual or computer-based, you should check and confirm the settings will be adjusted for the new rates. If any of your employees are on starting-out or training wages, now is a good time to check when they will be eligible to move onto the adult rate.

If any employment agreements (contracts) are not current or you did not give one to your employees, now is an ideal time to discuss

with them in good faith. Update the contract with any terms and conditions that were agreed to by both parties before the contracts were last reviewed.

Make sure they include all the mandatory clauses a contract should have by law. Another useful tool is the employment agreement builder if your employees do not have one.

3. Employee pay relativity

You may also wish to consider potential impacts on your business due to internal wage relativity and external benchmarking. For example, how employees are paid compared to each other, and how your pay rates compare to others in your industry or sector. Employees on higher wages may want to negotiate a pay increase to keep the relative difference.

4. Update your business budget

You should add any expected increased costs to your short and medium-term budget forecasts. This will help you plan for and manage the effect of higher wage and holiday pay liabilities.

5. Upskill on minimum wage obligations

Now is also an ideal time to ensure you know the details around the minimum wage, including that:

• It applies to all hours worked, unless both parties agree to a higher rate in the employment agreement

• It applies to employees paid with a salary or piece rates or commission.

If your system is manual or computerbased, you should check and confirm the settings will be adjusted for the new rates. If any of your employees are on starting-out or training wages, now is a good time to check when they will be eligible to move onto the adult rate.

Note the minimum wage does not apply in some situations including:

• Employees under 16 years of age

• Where a Labour Inspector has issued a minimum wage exemption permit to an employee who has a disability that limits them carrying out their work. CT

How Gen Z is getting rich

Generation Z is making the most of the economic hand they’ve been dealt. The generation’s view on finances is a mix of anxiety, ambition, and tech-savvy. Compared to other generations, Gen Z reports higher levels of financial stress due to factors like rising living costs, student loan debt, and limited access to affordable housing.

But despite the stress, Gen Z shows a strong desire to manage debt responsibly. They are actively seeking information and strategies to pay off loans and build savings. Financial literacy is one way to reclaim control in a world where the future is so uncertain.

Though there’s some debate about whether he said it or not, Albert Einstein is quoted saying, “Compound interest is the eighth wonder of the world. He who understands it earns it... he who doesn’t... pays it.” He called it the single most powerful force in the universe. Gen Z agrees.

Gen Z are investing and saving far sooner than their parents did. By educating themselves and starting small, they’re seeing worthwhile profits. Today you needn’t be a commerce pro to invest. The best time to start investing is today. Focus on steady growth in the long term, automate regular contributions

to a high-yield savings account, and explore low-cost index funds and professional advice.

Today’s youth grow up with technology at their fingertips. Digital resources for investing barely scrape the surface. Think mobile banking apps, budgeting tools, and even cryptocurrencies and non-fungible tokens (NFTs), which are more integrated into their financial strategies than in previous generations.

Aware of the high costs and potentially low returns of traditional higher education, many in Gen Z prefer alternative learning paths such as online courses, boot camps, and self-taught skills, particularly in tech fields. This can mean less student debt burden, as has hindered past generations, and accelerated entry into income-generating careers.

Side hustles are a cornerstone of Gen Z’s money strategy. Multiple income streams mean no reliance on one source of income. Should a side hustle fail or one lose their job, they will still have money coming in. Freelancing and online businesses offer more than financial diversity. Gen Z also values aligning side hustles with their passions and interests. They seek creative outlets, entrepreneurial ventures, and ways to monetise their skills and hobbies. And it wouldn’t be an article on Generation Z without touching on social media. Gen Z is turning to platforms like TikTok and Instagram not just for entertainment but also for education. They’re also profiting from these platforms by using them to market their side hustles and

talents, building personal brands that attract sponsorships and deals.

This also leads to social advocacy, as Gen Z uses their online presence to drive social change. Skilled at using digital platforms, they effectively combine business with activism, reflecting their values in both how they make money and their impact on society.

On values, the generation’s focus on ethical and sustainable consumption impacts their approach to money. They tend to adopt mindful spending habits and choose financial freedom over chasing luxury. While this inspires positive societal change, it also has some of today’s employers concerned. Gen Z has entered the workforce with a distinct and sometimes challenging set of expectations. With a stronger emphasis on work-life balance, job desires like remote work options and schedule flexibility can troublingly lead to higher employee turnover.

Their reliance on technology can also raise concerns about

interpersonal communication. For example, Gen Z is less likely to be comfortable calling strangers. However, they bring a desire for rapid learning, frequent feedback, and, as mentioned, societal good with them. Those who leverage these unique skills and perspectives effectively will make the most of the new wave of employees.

Generation Z is changing how finances are managed, with a focus on ethical investment, digital fluency, and diverse income streams. Commerce meets activism in young online spaces, and as they enter the workforce their preference for flexibility, purpose-driven work, and tech-savvy presents challenges but also opportunities for employers. Harnessing these qualities is the key to unlocking Gen Z’s full potential and driving forward a sustainable economic future.

Gen Z is leveraging technology for financial gain more so than ever before; imagine what Gen Alpha will do. It’s only up from here. CT

Blueprint for success

Habits of businesses that thrive

The business world is a dynamic ecosystem that constantly evolves and demands adaptation. What works today might be obsolete tomorrow. So, how do some companies not just survive but thrive in this fast-paced environment? The answer lies in cultivating a set of core habits that create resilience, growth, and a deep connection with their customers.

A clear vision

Thriving businesses don’t stumble blindly into success. They have a well-defined vision and a guiding goal that inspires their actions. This vision goes beyond just making a profit; it encapsulates the company’s core values, its impact on the world, and the unique value proposition it offers. It’s the unwavering answer to the question: “Why do we exist?” Having a clear vision serves as a decision-making compass, ensuring every action the company takes aligns with its longterm goals. This unwavering focus allows them to navigate challenges and opportunities with a sense of purpose, attracting and retaining talent who share their passion.

Embracing agility

The business landscape is no longer a predictable path. It’s a winding road filled with unforeseen twists and turns. Successful businesses understand that inflexibility is a recipe for disaster. They cultivate agility, the ability to adapt their strategies and operations in response to changing market conditions, customer needs, and technological advancements. This doesn’t imply abandoning their core vision; instead, it’s about finding innovative ways to deliver on that vision in a dynamic environment. Companies that thrive are comfortable with calculated risks and pivoting their strategies when necessary. Think of Netflix,

a company that began as a DVD rental service and skillfully pivoted to become a streaming giant, constantly innovating its content and delivery methods.

Obsessed with Value, Not Just Sales

In today’s experience-driven economy, customers are no longer satisfied with just a product or service. They crave value – a sense that their purchase is an investment that enhances their lives. Thriving businesses become obsessed with delivering this value, not just closing sales. This means understanding their customer’s needs on a deeper level, anticipating their problems, and coming up with solutions that make a real difference. They prioritise building trust and long-term relationships with their customers. It’s about moving beyond transactional interactions to creating a sense of community and shared purpose.

A Culture of Innovation

Innovation is the lifeline of any thriving business. It’s the spark that ignites growth and keeps the company ahead of the curve. Companies that excel cultivate a culture that encourages and embraces new ideas. This means creating an environment where employees feel empowered to take calculated risks, experiment, and learn from failures. It’s about creating a space for open

communication and collaboration, where diverse perspectives are valued and creativity can flourish. Think of companies like Google, where employees are given dedicated time to pursue their own passions, leading to some of their most groundbreaking innovations.

The Power of Continuous Learning

The business world is a constant learning curve. Knowledge becomes obsolete quickly, and successful businesses understand the importance of continuous learning. They invest in training and development programs for their employees, encouraging them to stay ahead of industry trends, acquire new skills, and adapt to changing technologies. This not only benefits the employees but also injects fresh perspectives and knowledge into the organisation, keeping it innovative and competitive. Successful businesses are open to learning from their customers. By actively seeking feedback and understanding

understand the power of collaboration. They actively seek out strategic partnerships with other organisations, industry leaders, and even competitors to leverage each other’s strengths and expertise. Collaboration allows them to access new markets, share resources, and develop innovative solutions that might not have been possible on their own. This collaborative spirit creates a sense of community within the industry, leading to a more robust and dynamic ecosystem for everyone involved.

Purpose Beyond Profit

Today’s consumers are increasingly drawn to businesses that stand for something bigger than just making money. Thriving businesses recognise the importance of giving back to their communities and the environment. They integrate social responsibility into their core values, actively participating in causes they believe in. This commitment to social good not only strengthens their brand image and attracts purpose-driven employees but also fosters a sense of loyalty among customers who share their values. CT

2023 proved to be a difficult season for the broader red meat industry, and as a 120-year-old site, Pareora also experienced its fair share of challenges.

Thankfully, due to some hard work by staff, the Site was able to get some major pieces of work done to some areas of the site which have now been modernised to a high standard. In total across all Silver Fern Farms sites across New Zealand, the company invested around $70 million in capital expenditure last year.

Empowering anonymity: Crimestoppers New Zealand

In today’s workforce, employee exploitation remains a critical issue, often manifesting through various unethical practices by employers.

One of the most extreme forms of such exploitation is the manipulation of workers’ vulnerabilities, such as tying their visa status to their jobs, which can leave them feeling trapped and powerless

Being forced to work under threat of losing legal status or enduring unsafe working conditions without proper compensation are clear signs of being taken advantage of. Some employers may demand excessive overtime without pay or deny workers their rightful benefits and breaks, which not only violates

labour laws but also fundamental human rights.

Employees must recognise signs of exploitation, which can also include a lack of safety measures at work. Employers are legally required to ensure a safe working environment; failure to do so while still compelling employees to work is a form of abuse.

Workers must know their rights, which include fair pay, safe working conditions, and the freedom to voice grievances without fear of retaliation. If these rights are being compromised, an employee could take many different advisable routes, such as contacting Crimestoppers New Zealand.

Here in Aotearoa, where community and security form the backbone of our society, Crimestoppers New Zealand emerges as a pivotal

force in combating crime. As an independent charity, Crimestoppers provides a confidential channel for citizens to share information about criminal activities without fear of exposure. With a mission deeply rooted in safeguarding the community’s tranquillity, this organisation has positioned itself as a crucial ally in the quest for a safer New Zealand for all.

Anonymity as a Service Crimestoppers guarantees absolute anonymity, shielding the informant’s identity whilst ensuring that no

traces of the interaction linger.

Whether you call their 24/7 hotline or submit information through the secure online form, your anonymity is number one. This commitment extends beyond the call—no records are kept that might link back to the informant, ensuring peace of mind and protection for those who step forward.

A Community-Centric Approach

At its core, Crimestoppers believes in community empowerment. The charity tirelessly encourages

individuals to report illicit activities, thereby playing a direct role in crime prevention and resolution. Their campaigns are a testament to their dedication, often focusing on serious crimes that impact community safety, from illegal firearm possession to drug trafficking.

A Call to Action

Operating without government funding, Crimestoppers relies on the generosity of the community through donations and partnerships. Contributions can be made directly into their bank account or even as a lasting legacy through bequests. Every donation aids them in their daily operations, from handling over a thousand reports monthly to maintaining the technology that keeps the reporting process anonymous and secure.

Joining Forces with the Private Sector

Recognising the power of collaboration, Crimestoppers also engages with commercial partners under the umbrella of the Honest Bunch Foundation. These partnerships are not just financial but built on shared values of integrity

and community service, enhancing the reach and effectiveness of Crimestoppers initiatives. Such alliances are designed to foster a safer environment and stimulate societal and business benefits simultaneously.

A Safer New Zealand

Through every report it receives and every campaign it initiates, Crimestoppers New Zealand not only addresses individual incidents of crime but also contributes to a broader understanding and strategy against crime nationwide. Their efforts help illuminate patterns, identify areas of concern, and guide law enforcement strategies, making Aotearoa a safer place for everyone.

Crimestoppers invites everyone to become a part of their mission – whether by reporting a crime, contributing financially, or forming a partnership. Each action taken adds to a collective effort that significantly impacts the safety and well-being of the community. Children’s charity launches campaignurgent to fill beds

Cholmondeley Children’s Centre has turned to the Canterbury community to ask for help to fill the beds at its respite care facility.

It has launched ‘Give a Good Nights Sleep’, a fundraising campaign with three of the centre’s beds placed at various locations throughout Christchurch city to help drive both awareness and donations.

“We wanted to install something in the city that reminded the public about Cholmondeley’s role in the community and that every night for 50 weeks of the year there are tamariki in need being cared for by us,” said Cholmondeley Children’s Centre general manager, Toni Tinirau. Cholmondeley has 23 beds for tamariki to stay during times of whānau stress or crisis, but on average just 17 of these beds are filled due to financial limitations.

“We work hard to provide a free safe haven for as many Canterbury tamariki as we can but we can’t do it alone, we need the community to come together and help us fill our beds,” said Tinirau.

The ‘Give a Good Nights Sleep’ campaign beds are in place at Riverside Market, The Palms Shopping Centre and Ballantynes Department Store in the children’s department.

“Every empty bed is a missed opportunity to support a child in need, if you can help us out at all please donate to give Canterbury tamariki a safe place to sleep,” said Tinirau.

Tamariki sleep overnight at Cholmondeley for up to three nights every six to eight weeks, to give them a planned break from challenges their whānau is facing at home. These could be challenges such as a whānau member living with a physical or mental illness, bereavement, financial hardship, domestic violence or living with their grandparents as their sole caregivers. When tamariki are at the centre they are given opportunities to go on adventure-based learning

activities, and supported to build positive social connections with their peers.

Cholmondeley also has a community outreach Awhi team who work with whānau to help them on their journey through issues in the home. They provide solutions and support with parenting coaching, behaviour management, or establishing new habits for whānau and their tamariki.

“Since Cholmondeley opened in 1925 it has cared for more than 30,000 tamariki, but this has only been made possible by the generosity of the Canterbury community. To continue helping whānau and their tamariki when they need us, we need the continued support of the community,” Tinirau explained. Cholmondeley is an independent charity and costs just under $3,000,000 to run each year, with 20 percent of the figure met by Government funding and the remaining 80 percent from the community.

Donations can be made in person at the beds or online at: www.cholmondeley.org.nz CT

Empowering Women

Empowering women is all about creating an environment where we can all thrive independently. It is all about dismantling barriers, whether societal, economic, or political.

Girlhood and womanhood are arguably some of the most powerful forms of human connection on the planet. When women support each other and lift each other up, they foster a network of encouragement and support that helps each individual grow stronger and more confident.

When girls learn early on the importance of mutual respect and empowerment, they grow into women who advocate for each other’s successes and well-being. Encouraging girls to make their own decisions is a cornerstone of this empowerment, promoting independence and uniqueness that lasts a lifetime. Such support not only uplifts individuals but also enriches the entire fabric of society. By investing in girls and women and encouraging them to support one another, we are building a foundation for a more fair and adaptable world. CT

Natural New Zealand goodness

If you’re a Kiwi who has ever had fruit juice or soup, you likely have Juice Products New Zealand to thank. Juice Products

New Zealand Limited (JP-NZ) is a New Zealand-oriented and operated vegetable and fruit juice concentrates processor based in Timaru, South Canterbury.

JP-NZ are strictly wholesalers. Their juice is sold to beverage manufacturers as an ingredient, who then blend it with other products. So, you won’t see JPNZ on the shelves; under their brand, that is.

JP-NZ is a leading processor of raw carrots into high-quality carrot juice concentrates, which are then exported mainly to Asia, North America, and Australasia (Japan, Taiwan, and the United States were their biggest markets in the past year). While ninety-nine per cent of their work is exported, you can, of course, still enjoy their products in New Zealand.

JP-NZ products are primarily used in vegetablebased beverages, most notably in the V8 juice range available in New Zealand. They can also be found in soups, custard desserts, and gin, where their purple carrot juice is used as a natural colourant for a berry-flavoured tipple.

of raw carrots into 10,000 metric tons of carrot juice concentrate.

The business moved to its current premises in 2008 when Japan’s demand for JP-NZ’s products started to boom. Soon after, in 2015, JP-NZ was bought by one of Japan’s major integrated trading and investment business enterprises, Sumitomo Corporation.

The original business, Timaru Concentrators, was founded in 1993. Understanding the limitations of the New Zealand market, which couldn’t absorb JP-NZ’s vast juice production, the company looked offshore to expand its reach. Annually, they process up to 70,000 metric tons

Over recent years, Juice Products New Zealand has reduced its plant downtime from 15 to less than two per cent during the processing season, which runs from mid-February to early October. This period, crucial for their operations, allows for around 220 processing days, during which the

company maximises production to meet growing international demand.

Beyond reduced plant downtime, JP-NZ reports significant gains in processing efficiency and a deeper understanding of the business’ key strengths and goals. The Sumitomo Corporation’s worldwide network has assisted sales and solidified JP-NZ’s place as a titan in the juice processing industry.

JP-NZ’s product line is diverse. They offer orange, yellow, and purple carrot concentrates, with their Orange 50 Brix UHT being the top seller, followed by Yellow 42 Brix and Purple 50 Brix. They also manage a smaller organic line and process limited quantities of beetroot juice and blackcurrants strictly on a toll processing basis.

Looking to the future, JP-NZ aims to fully use all available processing days and break into new markets such as China and Thailand. They are also exploring the addition of other local crops like blackcurrants, boysenberries, and beetroot to their production schedule outside the main carrot processing season.

JP-NZ’s biggest news for 2024 is the installation of dicers and colour sorters, which reduce

Though the bulk of JP-NZ’s products are exported, they will forever value New Zealand above all for its fertile soil, clean water, and stable climate, ideal for growing carrots. Their brand mission is “Healthy Natural New Zealand Goodness,” and their company purpose is “generating a sustainable future for all.”

A premium global juice provider exemplifying New Zealand’s strong international image, JP-NZ continues to move from strength to strength. By innovating in processing technology, exploring new market opportunities, and maintaining high standards for quality and sustainability, Juice Products New Zealand continues to solidify its position as a leader in the global juice concentrate market. Managing asbestos

Are you aware of what needs to be done before you demolish or refurbish a property or building?

Many building demolition projects are delayed when hazardous materials like asbestos, black mould or leadbased materials are found midway through demolition. Planning is key to recognising all of the potential hazards and risks involved in demolition work.

Asbestos regulations require any asbestos or asbestoscontaining materials (ACM) to be identified before any demolition or refurbishment work on a structure is undertaken if it was built before the turn of the millennium, asbestos has been identified, or asbestos is likely to be present.

If your site fits the criteria above, then you have a duty to identify asbestos before demolition work begins. If determining whether asbestos is present isn’t feasible, you must assume asbestos is present.

Asbestos is a major health threat to thousands of New Zealanders and millions of people around the world.

Officially, asbestos awareness in New Zealand started in the 1930s. Regulations didn’t come into effect here until 1978.

Per WorkSafe, “Anyone who believes they were exposed to asbestos, or were diagnosed with an asbestos-related disease, is welcome to join the register by completing a Notifiable Occupational Disease System (NODS) form: www.worksafe.govt.nz ”

Only licensed asbestos removalists with the equipment and training to do the job safely should handle the removal of asbestos. Asbestos waste must be disposed of at approved facilities.

Guardian of New Zealand’s Little penguins

On the remote southeastern corner of Banks Peninsula is Pohatu Bay, home to the largest colony of Little penguins found on mainland New Zealand with over 1800 birds breeding there.

This outstanding number is attributed to a family who started to care for Little penguins on their property 30+ years ago.

The story is well known all around New Zealand, with the introduction of predators many of our native wildlife disappeared at alarming rates and the Little Penguin population around

the Banks peninsula would have decreased by 80%.

In early 2000, after 10 years of self-funded conservation work, the first survey was done and with a decent number of breeding pairs found (717), it put P ō hatu Bay and the colony under the spotlights. Unfortunately, once the colony was made famous and known to the general public, it quickly became clear that controlling the flux of people coming at random times of day or night looking for penguins was a necessity to avoid disturbance and breeding failures. So, was created P ō hatu penguins/ plunge NZ Ltd to help manage this influx and make visitors aware of what is happening and to show that we can all do our bit if we put our minds to it.

Predator control is still a big part of the conservation happening as well as giving a second chance to weak and injured birds

Nowadays P ō hatu penguins offers many tour options to discover the world of Little penguins and what it takes to protect them as well as other native wildlife. Predator

control is still a big part of the conservation happening as well as giving a second chance to weak and injured birds, grazing the land and running biology studies to monitor the colony and to track birds at sea to better understand their foraging behaviour.

Options include Evening penguin tours, Nature tours, Sea-kayaking safaris, Hiking or a 24-hour package with a night in the middle of the colony and the best thing is, you joining them helps support 30+ years of conservation work.

Embracing greener cleaning

Our spaces should be sanctuaries, not sources of harm. Yet many common cleaning products contain toxic chemicals that can have serious consequences for our health, from respiratory issues to long-term chronic diseases. Going greener with your cleaning offers a safer alternative that promotes a healthier living environment.

Greener cleaning is not only about the chemicals used but also about how one uses them to clean. Some different ways to ensure greener cleaning is taking place in your home can be as easy as understanding what chemicals to use where and how to use them safely. It isn’t as simple as just

going “organic” or “natural” with your products, as there are many naturally occurring poisons in our environment; on the other hand, not all manufactured chemicals are dangerous to us and the environment.

Commercial cleaning companies, such as Christchurch-based Genie Clean, are strong advocates for greener cleaning. They believe that cleaning responsibly means caring for the environment and the community.

Genie Clean, a local family business, strives to remain the

number one cleaning company in Christchurch by doing what they do best; delivering great service and going the extra mile for their customers.

For over twenty-five years, Genie Clean has been dedicated to providing exceptional services to its clients and customers. It offers services for home and office spaces such as window cleaning, water blasting, move-out cleans, and even regular scheduled cleans. South Canterbury’s importance not to be ignored

In a recent report commissioned from regional economist, the importance of South Canterbury agriculture was highlighted, making a clear argument for more government investment in the region.

The contribution of primary sector exports from Timaru and South Canterbury to New Zealand was commissioned from regional economist Benje Patterson by Economic Development Agency, Venture Timaru.

The Timaru District Council says the report shows food and fibre exports from South Canterbury

totalled $3.9 billion and, despite the region only have 1.2 percent of New Zealand’s population, accounted for approximately 7.3 percent of New Zealand’s total food and fibre exports.

The report also shows South Canterbury isn’t being stagnant in their success – they’re continuing to grow and forge ahead.

Over five years, the value of food and fibre exports from South Canterbury climbed 82 percent from an estimated $2.1 billion in 2017 to $3.9 billion in 2022.

By comparison, the report says, other exports from South Canterbury (including machinery, equipment and other manufactured goods) grew by just five percent from $105 million to $110 million over the same period.

Most of South Canterbury’s food and fibre exports are dairy ($2.5 billion), followed by meat and wool ($923 million) and seafood and aquaculture exports ($227 million).

Horticulture and processed food items exports contribute $76 million and $65 million respectively to the total.

Meanwhile, exports of arable crops of grains, grass seeds and vegetable seeds add a further $46 million to the South Canterbury total.

Venture Timaru Chief Executive, Nigel Davenport, says the research

confirmed this region was contributing significantly to New Zealand’s export economy and this needs to be substantially better recognised and supported by central government than is currently the case.

“South Canterbury is home to the most diverse range of food processors and manufacturers in a geographically close location than anywhere else in the country who, along with their suppliers and associated servicing industries, are an integral part of New Zealand,” Nigel says. >

“Our powerhouse agricultural sector provides significant income to New Zealand, but much of this production requires good infrastructure to meet its potential.”
-

Nigel says South Canterbury punches well above their weight in terms of contribution to New Zealand’s total food and fibre exports, particularly when one considers the region’s relatively small population.

According to the Timaru District Council. Timaru’s PrimePort plays a major part in their economic success, with Statistics New Zealand data showing that $1.1 billion of exports from the port in 2021, 99 percent of which were food and fibre products.

Timaru District Mayor Nigel Bowen says that despite the district’s outsized contribution to the national balance of trade, support from Government doesn’t necessarily follow.

“Our powerhouse agricultural sector provides significant income to New Zealand, but much of this production requires good infrastructure to meet its potential,” he says.

“Conservative estimates show that heavy vehicle movements on South Canterbury’s State Highways alone contributes $35 million to the Government through Road User Charges.”

Nigel says that while populationbased funding is delivering major highway upgrades to cities, Timaru and South Canterbury are still dealing with one lane bridges on some of their major routes.

“South Canterbury already delivers massive benefits to New Zealand. In an environment where we’re seeing record balance of payments deficits, our government needs to be investing in productive and high performing export sectors of the economy,” Nigel explains.

Calculations using Waka Kotahi data – based on odometer readings at certificate of fitness assessments – shows there were 79.7 million vehicle kilometres travelled (VKT) by heavy vehicles on state highways in South Canterbury in 2022, which is equivalent to about 3.2 percent of all heavy VKT nationally on state highways.

RUC generated for the government by South Canterbury’s heavy VKT share was estimated to be in the order of $35 million in 2022 (out of $1.1 billion of heavy RUC collected nationally).

Overall, the report highlights the importance of Timaru and South Canterbury to the rest of the country and, now, key stakeholders are wondering why they seem to be getting the short straw when it comes to government investment. CT

Rolleston, the largest town in the Selwyn District, is undergoing significant development to accommodate its rapid growth. The town’s development plans include a mix of residential, commercial, and recreational upgrades to create a vibrant community hub.

The centrepiece of Rolleston’s development is the Rolleston Town Centre project. This initiative aims to establish a new commercial and community heart for the town, enhancing its role as a key urban centre in the region. The development included

the construction of Te Ara Ātea, a multifunctional civic centre that houses a library, community and meeting rooms, art spaces, and heritage displays. This centre is designed to be a cultural and social focal point for the town.

Infrastructure upgrades are a critical aspect of Rolleston’s development strategy. These include the creation of new roads, enhancements to existing car parks, and the establishment of pedestrian pathways to improve accessibility and safety. Such developments are based on community feedback and professional recommendations aimed at supporting sustainable growth and ensuring that the town centre is safe, accessible, and economically viable.

Rolleston’s plans also emphasise the importance of recreational and

public spaces. The development of the Selwyn Aquatic Centre and Foster Park are part of a broader recreation precinct strategy. These facilities are intended to meet the recreational needs of Rolleston’s residents, contributing to a higher quality of life and community well-being.

The Selwyn District Council’s LongTerm Plan (2024-2034) outlines Rolleston’s strategic direction over the next decade. This plan includes significant projects such as upgrades to public transport infrastructure and the construction

of new community facilities like a library and an indoor sports and recreation centre. These initiatives are designed to ensure that Rolleston can effectively manage its growth while providing essential services to residents at all stages of life.

Community engagement is a key component of Rolleston’s development process. The town’s residents are actively involved in shaping the future through feedback on projects and proposals, ensuring that the developments reflect the community’s needs and

preferences. This participatory approach helps make informed decisions that align with the public’s expectations and requirements.

Rolleston’s development plans are robust, aiming to cater to its demographic and economic expansion with a balanced approach to urban planning, infrastructure development, and community services. These efforts are geared towards creating a well-equipped, sustainable urban environment that meets the needs of both current and future residents. CT

Are funerals still relevant?

Over the last few years many more people are choosing direct cremations – a form of unattended cremation where family and friends don’t have a funeral at all.

Often this can be about cost, although if the family chooses to have a memorial after there may not be a lot of saving.

So in defence of a full funeral, with a body present and managed by a professional funeral director, we’ve explored whether a full funeral is relevant today.

Who is the funeral for?

Often our members hear, “Oh I don’t want a fuss”. Gently, they must remind families that the funeral is not just for them.

Funerals provide a socially acceptable and safe setting for the open expression of personal grief. They provide a focus for the expression of loss by individuals and by their communities. This latter can go beyond wider friends for many and so often we have seen people want to be celebrated and acknowledged by those who’s lives they have touched.

Funerals are also a vehicle for the support of the bereaved. The hugs, the kind words, the caring actions of those supporting the bereaved reinforce the important social ties that reflect what it is to be human.

Order and meaning

Most of us don’t deal with death frequently. Even if expected, the grief associated with death affects our thinking and decisionmaking abilities.

Death is also a bit complicated. There is paperwork to be done. Laws to be followed. An event to be created – all in the space of a few days.

A big part of the value of working wth a funeral director is helping put

A good funeral director will not only manage the physical activities and logistics, but will point the family in the direction of what might be most meaningful for them.

Whether its through laughter, heartwarming recollections, the right music, or the opening of a beer at dad’s normal drinking hour, a celebrant will control the content for the family and ensure the farewell remains respectful of their wishes.

More relevant than ever

With the pain of the Covid-affected funerals still in our rear-view mirror those dreadful months where funeral gatherings were not allowed reinforced more than ever the relevance and value of a funeral.

For every heart-breaking story of parents forced to watch a child’s burial from a car, or of whanau sleeping outside the funeral home because it was the only way to be close to their tupapaku, we are hearing stories of the comfort and support the return to funeral gatherings has bought.

So yes, we believe funerals are still relevant. Talk to a member of the Funeral Directors Association of New Zealand for your assurance of a meaningful farewell. Find a funeral director here: www.funeraldirectors.co.nz.

some order into what might seem a chaotic time. A good funeral director will not only manage the physical activities and logistics, but will point the family in the direction of what might be most meaningful for them.

Increasingly these events are as different and unique as we are.

Funeral directors are experts in creating unique and special experiences, and as New Zealand society continues to change and grow so too will the end-of-life experiences they need to create.

Telling a personalised story

Funeral celebrants are the ceremony specialists who can help bring the ‘event’ the funeral director has created to life.

Celebrants are curators – sifting through the information shared by a family to create a ceremony that truly reflects the personality of the individual being honoured.

Tranquility without isolation

Just a short drive north of Christchurch, another world awaits –North Canterbury.

Nestled comfortably on the main highway between Waipara and Hamner Springs, the Hurunui River Retreat offers tranquillity without isolation.

It takes little more than an hour to make the 80km trip from Christchurch, or just 40 minutes from the Hanmer township.

And, while developed as a project for the social couple to enjoy during their retirement years, the retreat has grown to be so much more than that.

Each apartment offers a heat pump, BBQ and outdoor furniture, a television and DVD player. The Flax apartment includes a king size bed

and two king singles, while Tussock offers one king size and one queen sized bed.

Perhaps the jewel in Hurunui Retreat’s crown is the outdoor bath.

Tucked privately behind a timber screen, the gas heated bath is a comfortable way to ease into your holiday break. “It’s an extremely popular draw card,” Ali laughs.

The retreat, and the surrounding are itself, isn’t short on drawcards.

In summer, take a short stroll through the paddock to swim in the river; in winter make the most of the nearby ski fields, enjoy a leisurely ride on the mountain bikes provided, or duck out for some fishing at the renowned Hurunui and Waiau rivers.

There’s plenty to do, with the Hurunui River Retreat handy to many popular destinations and local activities. CT

Things to do

Winery and food

The region boasts an ever growing number of vineyards and fantastic eateries. The North Canterbury Food and Wine Trail provides information on some of the region’s well known wineries.

Fishing

There have a wonderful fishing ground right on the retreat’s doorstep. The Hurunui River offers excellent searun brown trout, rainbow trout and salmon fishing. Should you be interested in a fishing guide to accompany you on a day out during your stay, please let Ali or Steve know at the time of booking.

Hiking and walking

One of the highlights of this beautiful region is the stunning walkways and tracks. Just behind the Retreat, do the one and a half hour ‘Old Forest Walk’, which once you’ve reached the top, offers stunning views across the area of the Southern Alps and the Hurunui River. You can also enjoy

a stroll along the river’s edge, just a stone’s throw from your accommodation.

Swimming

Only a 10 minute walk across paddocks from the retreat, there is a lovely water hole in the Hurunui River next to which you can set up a picnic or just dash down to for a quick dip.

Golf

The region boasts some wonderful golf courses, all within a half hour’s drive from the Retreat – choose from the Amuri Golf Club, a lovely local nine hole course offering 18 different teeing grounds. Other regional clubs include the Hamner Springs Golf Club, the Amberley Golf Course, the Culverden Golf Club and the Hawarden Golf Club.

Get your business ready

Under the Health and Safety in Employment Act, businesses are obligated to be prepared for emergencies.

It’s essential that businesses have workplace emergency plans in place. Here’s how.

First, get your staff ready. Encourage your staff to keep essential items that they may need at work, such as sturdy walking shoes, a waterproof jacket, a torch, snack food, and water.

Your plan should include emergency procedures for fires, earthquakes, tsunamis and other hazards. Consider assembly points, wardens, and first aid training.

Build a comprehensive contact list as well. This should include ways to contact staff, suppliers, clients, insurance providers, and others.

You should also make alternative arrangements in case you’re unable to access your premises and important information.

In particular, some scenarios to plan for include staff not being able to leave the building, people being seriously injured, and staff not being able to take their usual transport home.

Tandem with an emergency plan is a business continuity plan. Where an emergency plan prepares businesses for in-the-moment crisis procedures, a continuity plan outlines how everything will get back up and running again.

Business owners aren’t legally required to make continuity plans, but there are many reasons to do so. Many small businesses struggle to reopen after a disaster. Planning increases the odds your business will survive.

Proper continuity and emergency planning reassure staff, buyers, and investors, as it shows that you’ve considered situations beyond business as usual.

Resilient businesses come with lower risk, so it’s more likely that insurers will consider lower premiums.

Planning can also lead you to opportunities to develop your business further, helping you identify inefficiencies and maximise strengths.

Your plans should cover how to protect your business assets, including staff, equipment, facilities, IT systems, reputation, market share, liquidity, and so on.

Having access to external services is crucial. It’s important you know how external services will be protected, particularly in support of Civil Defence emergency management critical activities, such as emergency services and medical facilities.

Will your services be demanded in desperate times? Your plans should also forecast and prioritise external demand for your services before an emergency occurs.

For those you depend on, plan cooperatively so that responsibilities and roles are clearly understood. Build confidence and togetherness in your community before a crisis calls upon those values.

No two crises are the same. All of your plans shouldn’t just sit on the shelf. Try and test them with relevant staff yearly; it won’t break the bank.

Run half-hour-long stress test exercises that give staff scenarios to plan for. Focus on managing consequences like what will happen if a key machine is broken or the premises are closed for a fortnight.

Emergencies can happen at any time, including during business hours. Expect the unexpected. You cannot predict when an emergency will occur, but you can take action to prepare your business.

If too many people put the wrong things in their recycling bins, the whole truckload goes to landfill.

Empty, Clean and Loose

All containers need to be empty, clean and loose in the bin (not bagged). All lids must be put in the rubbish.

Look for the Triangle

Plastic bottles and containers have a plastic code, usually on the bottom inside a triangle. This code tells us the type of plastic it is and whether or not it can be recycled. We can only accept plastic types 1, 2 and 5.

Paper and Cardboard

Paper and cardboard needs to be flat not crumpled up and must be clean with no food or food-staining. We can accept clean and empty pizza boxes in the recycling. Those with oil or food on the cardboard can go in your worm farm or compost, otherwise put them in the rubbish.
