Goods & Services | City Locksmiths

Securing your property for 56 years This year, City Locksmiths is celebrating its 56th birthday because for almost six decades it has managed to weave itself through the unpredictable nature of business and stay at the top of the game. The business was established in 1959 by Rae Mortimer under the name of The City Locksmith. At the time they were only one of three locksmiths in the city and under the management of Rae, grew from strength to strength. Today the company is in the hands of directors David and Melinda Ferguson, who manage 12 staff, five mobile vans and a 24/7 service for customers across the city. With fast and efficient customer service and a wholesale division to their name, City Locksmiths

has managed to adapt during the years to make sure they can deliver just what the customer wants and needs. As David says, it’s a reactive industry, so it can be hard to predict when, where and why they’ll be needed, but they always seem to be on the right track. David believes their ability to keep up with technological changes is the main reason they have been able to combat stiff competition in the city. They introduced an online booking system around three years ago that is growing steadily. With fewer and fewer people reaching for the phonebook and instead looking online for particular services, it seemed only right that they offer that for customers. Online trends are not the only thing City Locksmiths is experiencing. Electronic access such as key fobs, coded access etc. is increasing in popularity for both domestic and commercial environments. David sees the benefits in these applications, such as for commercial environments when losing a key can mean having to re-key entire areas for safety purposes - but going electronic takes that pain away as you can just blacklist a fob and re-issue another if necessary. There are in fact many benefits of going electronic.

“Particularly in commercial applications it’s good because you have an audit control facility, so you can monitor people coming and going, and that’s important. “Domestically, I think the fact that you have to carry keys around in your pocket is becoming a thing of the past. If you lose your keys and they get to someone else, then they can access your house, so if you go keyless-entry, for obvious reasons, if people don’t know your code they can’t get in,” says David. Electronic access is only one of a few services that City Locksmiths offer. Their qualified locksmiths are dotted throughout the city in fully equipped service vans and can service customers with commercial, domestic and automotive needs, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. As well as online booking service, customers can also purchase key accessories, padlocks and safes through the City Locksmith online

shop. By using their unique access code, professional locksmiths can access locksmith tools in the trade area of the website. For 41 years they have been members of the Master Locksmith Association of Australasia, and were founding members when the association arrived in New Zealand in 1981. Their membership means they abide by certain standards as set out by the organisation. City Locksmiths also has licenses to do Ministry of Defence work and police work.
