In less than five minutes a robotic arm removes the depleted battery and replaces it with a full one.”

Ignored for decades by car manufactureres and energy companies, Israel is now the great hope for the electric car and its citizens hold the key. If it works, it will go a long way to dispel the doubters.

Tres mujeres “independientes, modernas, trabajadoras, sencillas pero con mucha personalidad”. En ellas ve el fotógrafo la esencia de esta ciudad. “Las tres imágenes muestran barrios muy marcados por el tipo de gente que vive y trabaja en ellos. Los tres son arrondissiments (distritos municipales) que en la actualidad están viviendo un giro de identidad.

Habrá quien considere que el boom de las cámaras digitales acabó con la magia de la fotografía analógica. Pero seguro que entre los que piensan así no hay muchos aficionados a la fotografía submarina.

Gracias a las nuevas cámaras, la disciplina está viviendo sus años de esplendor. Ya no hace falta ser un profesional de la fotografía para realizar fotos de inmersiones... Y presumir, después, de ellas. Los fabricantes se han encargado de desarrollar modelos subacuáticos tan sencillos de manejar como cualquier otra cámara compacta. Aunque tampoco han olvidado a los aficionados a la fotografía y, por eso, han decidido dotar a algunas de sus réflex de los recursos necesarios para poder funcionar bajo el agua.

Y una vez equipados, toca elegir destino donde poder comprobar las posibilidades de la cámara. La visibilidad del agua, la variedad de los paisajes y la temperatura (sobre todo para los más frioleros) suelen ser tres de los criterios que más tienen en cuenta los aficionados a la fotografía submarina. Y Formentera es uno de los destinos que cumple con los tres.

Quizá es porque, a lo largo de su historia, sus costas han visto pasar todo tipo de embarcaciones: fenicias, romanas, cartaginesas, árabes, francesas, catalanas… El caso es que la afición de los menorquines por las embarcaciones clásicas resulta obvia. Encuentros como el que realiza cada año la asociación Amics de la Mar de Menorca, dedicada a la divulgación y conservación del patrimonio marítimo de la isla, o la Copa del Rey de Barcos de Época, son dos claros ejemplos.

Con el Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofía MAPFRE, que este año se ha celebrado a principios de abril, se inicia la temporada de regatas en Europa. La competición mallorquina está considerada como una de las siete mejores competiciones de vela olímpica y paralímpica del mundo. Pero no es la única. Unos meses después, en agosto, Mallorca acoge la Copa del Rey de Vela, la más importante de las competiciones que se celebran en el Mediterráneo.

Al igual que Formentera, Ibiza también cuenta con su propia semana del buceo. En este caso la ScubaWeek. Siete días durante los que los buceadores más experimentados pueden probar varios aspectos del buceo técnico en aguas ibicencas.

Eugenio Arias nació en 1909 en Buitrago de Lozoya, un pequeño pueblo de Madrid. Hijo de Pedro Arias, de profesión sastre, y de Nicolasa Herranz, pastora de ovejas, con nueve años aprendió el oficio de peluquero gracias a su abuelo. La peluquería familiar fue, además de una barbería, la escuela donde muchos vecinos aprendieron a leer y, durante algún tiempo, hasta la sede del Partido Comunista local.

Pero ¿quién es Eugenio Arias? Este madrileño llevaba todas las papeletas para permanecer toda su vida en el más completo anonimato. Pero un día su destino cambió para siempre. Picasso se cruzó en su vida y entre ambos surgió una estrecha relación que se mantuvo, durante más de 25 años, hasta la muerte del artista. Esta es la historia de amistad y camaradería entre el afamado pintor y Eugenio Arias, conocido desde entonces como ‘el barbero de Picasso’.

Tras peinar, afeitar y alfabetizar a medio pueblo, Eugenio Arias ingresó en el Partido Comunista durante la Guerra Civil.

Al concluir la contienda, marchó exiliado a Francia, donde siguió luchando contra el fascismo y cortando el pelo a cientos de camaradas durante 9 años. En 1946 se instaló en Vallauris y abrió una peluquería con su inseparable compañera Simona Francoual, combatiente de la resistencia francesa. Llamado a ser un número más en la lista de republicanos exiliados o, quizás, en la de los olvidados de la guerra civil, todo cambió cuando, en 1948, Pablo Picasso, igualmente exiliado en territorio francés, acude a cortarse el pelo a su barbería. Y ya nunca dejó de hacerlo.

Desde entonces, Eugenio fue su peluquero, su confidente, su amigo, su compañero en tardes de toros y Picasso, padrino de su boda cuando contrajo matrimonio con Simona en 1950. “Picasso fue mi segundo padre”, decía orgulloso.

Apenas conversaban de política a pesar de sus afinidades ideológicas. Ambos compartían la vida cotidiana: jugaban a las cartas, iban de bares, asistían a las corridas de toros, conversaban sobre España y Arias le recitaba poesía española.

From that point onward, Eugenio became Picasso’s

hairdresser, confidante, friend, and company for afternoons spent watching bullfights: Picasso was the best man at Eugenio’s wedding when he married Simona in 1950. “Picasso was my second father,” he used to say, with pride. They hardly talked about politics, despite their ideological affinity. Both shared their day to day life: they played cards, went out to bars, watched bullfights, chatted about Spain, and Arias recited Spanish poetry to Picasso.

Françoise Gilot, one of Picasso’s wives, explained in her book that the painter wouldn’t let anyone else cut his hair except his wives or Arias. “He was afraid that they could wrench away his vitality and he thought that whoever possessed his nails or his hair could hold some power over him, as it was there that his creative strength lay.”

The relationship between the Picasso and Arias, however, had more to it. Their conversations even

included classes on art: “Arias, when you look at a painting, the first thing you should do is look for the drawing. The colour is something that is added afterwards,” he enlightened Eugenio on one occasion. What’s more, Arias became a kind of PR agent for the painter and, quite unintentionally, became responsible for Picasso’s contact with the outside world during the years that he lived in Vallauris.

From his hairdresser’s, Arias would receive people who came to the town in the hope of seeing Picasso.

He kept unwanted visitors away and tried to organise interviews with the painter for artists, bullfighters, singers or Spanish people who were working in France and wanted to meet their incredible compatriot.

Over those years, Picasso gave Eugenio Arias over seventy works of art, both his own and by other artists. Arias gave this collection of drawings, prints, ceramics, posters and signed books

Además, Eugenio Arias se convirtió en una especie de relaciones públicas del pintor y, sin quererlo, pasó a encargarse de sus relaciones con el mundo exterior durante los años que vivió en Vallauris. Desde su peluquería, Arias recibía a las personas que llegaban a esta localidad con el propósito de visitar al pintor. Ahuyentaba a los curiosos y procuraba conceder entrevistas con el pintor a artistas, toreros, cantaores o españoles que trabajaban en Francia y deseaban conocer a su genial compatriota.

Picasso regaló durante esos años a Eugenio Arias más de 70 obras, propias o de otros artistas. Una colección de dibujos, grabados, cerámicas, carteles y libros dedicados que éste cedió en 1983 a su pueblo, Buitrago, donde la Comunidad de Madrid inauguró su primer museo, en marzo de 1985, en la sede del Ayuntamiento. Este museo, dedicado al arte y a la amistad, muestra las relaciones que se establecieron entre ellos: sus aficiones (los toros), sus pasiones, sus preocupaciones (el exilio), la militancia izquierdista, la nostalgia por la cultura española y el respeto y afecto a la profesión de barbero.

La amistad entre el artista y el peluquero es el hilo conductor del recorrido de este museo renovado recientemente. En la entrada, un poema de Rafael Alberti y las palabras de Eugenio Arias reciben al visitante junto a las dos obras más características del museo: la caja pirograbada dedicada a Arias, única en el mundo, que contiene los utensilios de peluquería de éste, y un plato con cabeza de toro.

La exposición se divide en tres ejes temáticos: ‘Para mi amigo Arias’, ‘Palomas y prisioneros’ y ‘Picasso toro’, espacio en el que se tratan los temas y aficiones compartidos por Picasso y Arias. Entre las piezas del museo destacan las típicas bacías de barbero -instrumentos de metal o barro que se usaban para humedecer y enjabonar la barba-, regaladas por Picasso a Arias en su cumpleaños. También la obra El pájaro del progreso, destinada a decorar el salón de peluquería de Arias, en la que se recogen asuntos fundamentales en el Picasso tardío: la mitología, la tradición mediterránea o el Siglo de Oro Español. The exhibition is divided into three themed areas:

‘For my friend Arias,’ ‘Doves and Prisoners’ and ‘Picasso and bullfighting,’ a space dedicated to the themes and interests shared by Picasso and Arias.

Of particular interest from the museum’s collection are the typical barber’s bowls that Picasso gave to Arias for his birthday, along with the piece entitled ‘Bird of Progress,’ designed to decorate Arias’ hairdressing salon. It brings together some of the key themes in Picasso’s later works: mythology, the Mediterranean tradition, or Golden Age Spain. In the area called ‘Doves and Prisoners,’ there are pieces in which the artist focuses on injustice and the defence of human rights, a cause he was firmly committed to.

Picasso and Arias remained friends until the death of the artist in 1973. Eugenio Arias revealed in a documentary that he wrapped Picasso’s body in a Spanish cape and sat with it all night, alone. Arias died in 2008 at his home in Vallauris, at the age of 98.

A CORUÑA – PARIS OPENS ON A MUSICAL NOTE On 29th March we launched a route linking A Coruña and Paris, and we wanted to do it with music. Two members of the Galician Symphony Orchestra participated in the event: the American violinist Dorothea Nicholas, and the French cellist, Florence Ronfort. PRIZEWINNING CREATIVITY FROM VUELING The prizes for our creativity just keep on coming… The latest were awarded by the Club de Creativos, which has acknowledged the art direction and photography of our ‘Escápate’ advertising campaign, and the daily newspaper, La Vanguardia, which has awarded us the Rombo Prize for the best creativity in graphic design. This last prize consisted of €30,000 in advertising space with the newspaper. We’ve donated this space to the Creu Roja for its fundraising campaign to help victims of the Japanese earthquake.

George Sibeau es el actual propietario del Château Sibeau, un bonito castillo rodeado de viñedos en el pueblo de Saint Emilion, a 30 km de Burdeos.

Tras casi 40 años viviendo en París, dos fracasos matrimoniales y sus hijos estudiando en el extranjero, decidió dejar de sentirse desubicado y volver a sus raíces. Tras la muerte de su padre, decidió quedarse para gestionar el legado familiar.

Lejos de seguir con el negocio de los vinos, George ha hecho del Château Sibeau un gran centro de formación donde cada semana se imparten cursos relacionados con la industria del vino.

Más empresario que enólogo, hace años decidió ceder la explotación del viñedo a una cooperativa que se ocupa del cultivo y la vendimia, y vende la producción a una gran marca comercial. La empresa es un gran éxito; quizás por eso, en los últimos años acaricia la idea de entrar en la zona de las barricas, George Sibeau is the current owner of Château Sibeau, a beautiful castle surrounded by vineyards in the village of Saint Emilion, 30km from Bordeaux. After almost 40 years living in Paris, two failed marriages and with his children studying abroad, George decided to quit feeling out of place in Paris and return to his roots. After his father died he chose to stay on and manage the family estate.

Rather than continue in winemaking directly, George turned Château Sibeau into a large training centre, where courses related to the wine industry take place every week.

More of a businessman that a wine expert, he had handed over the day to day running of the vineyards to a cooperative years ago.

They take care of grape growing and winemaking, then sell production on to a large commercial brand. The business is a great success and, perhaps for this reason, over the past few years, George has been toying with the idea of getting back into the cellars, removing the large canvas covers from the old machinery and recovering his father’s enterprise and brand. He has even considered abandoning Paris Saint Germain to become a Girondins de Bordeaux supporter, like when he was a boy.

Adjoining the Sibau vineyards are those belonging to Claude Arnaud, a genuine bon vivant. His wines are sold every year to order.

His message and brand have found a space for themselves in the ever-growing Asian market. The great winemakers of the region, however, rarely include him at their social events. At almost seventy, with a scruffy appearance and a reputation for overdoing it at tastings, he is hardly the ideal guest.

He remains, to this day, carefree and single, though the passion with which he runs his business is enough to keep him both active and proud. He claims to be one of the few people – if not the only one – who still uses egg whites as a fining agent, just like in the olden days, because his grandfather taught

One afternoon in May, George was wandering around the vineyard with his dogs, enjoying the spring light. He was on the phone to a friend from Paris, laughing and chatting away about the Parisian’s new girlfriend, when he suddenly noticed the figure of a man standing on top of the wall.

“I’ll call you later,” he said, putting the phone in his jacket pocket. Somewhat alarmed, he approached the wall, only to discover that it was Claude Arnaud. Under those circumstances there was no choice but to finally acknowledge him. He was about to do exactly that when his neighbour proceeded to unzip

Franciscus Doslow no solo fue el máximo responsable del programa ‘Guinea Pig’ de desarrollo de inventos en la década de los 50 y 60, sino que -dada su espectacular creatividad- tuvo un papel relevante en el diseño mismo de las instalaciones que iban a albergar los futuros experimentos bajo el desierto de Nevada en el Área 51.

El primer problema al que se enfrentó Doslow fue el de mantener las instalaciones subterráneas libres de cualquier mota de polvo que podría dañar los sofisticados (para la época) equipos electrónicos del laboratorio. Teniendo en cuenta que el complejo subterráneo estaba situado bajo uno de los desiertos más polvorientos del planeta, no era moco de pavo resolver el problema.

ichael Hansmeyer es un arquitecto alemán que bien podría constituir un ejemplo de iluminación artística en el siglo XXI, una especie de nuevo Leonardo Da Vinci con la formación suficiente para dar una buena vuelta de tuerca a uno de los elementos arquitectónicos más antiguo de la humanidad.

Su proyecto, gestado en el grupo de Diseño Arquitectónico Asistido por Ordenador del Instituto Federal Suizo de Tecnología (ETH), en Zurich, consiste en el diseño de un nuevo orden para las columnas, sobre la base de millones de procesos de subdivisión; una subdivisión que se convierte en un intrincado método de decoración, imposible incluso para las más modernas técnicas de impresión 3D. Al igual que una columna de abstracción dórica se ha basado siempre en sus tres componentes primordiales, la columna del siglo XXI tiene ahora miles de ellos, cada uno generado por ordenador. Michael Hansmeyer es arquitecto pero también programador; y explora el uso de algoritmos y la computación para generar la forma del más difícil todavía.

Estos algoritmos le permiten cortar el complejo diseño con entre 8 y 16 millones de caras poligonales individuales, que luego se unen para fabricar una columna a gran escala de 2,7 metros de altura hecha completamente de láminas de cartón apiladas. La vida de los cerdos no es precisamente fácil pero tienen una carne exquisita y, por desgracia, no hay otro modo de alimentar a una población humana que día a día va en aumento y reclama carne roja. No queda otra. Tienen que criarse en inmensas granjas que son como cadenas de montaje, grandes fábricas de la carne, donde los porcinos no tienen casi espacio para ellos y viven asustados hasta que están listos para ir al matadero. Qué se le va a hacer.

Visualicemos ahora a cientos de humanos criados como animales. Pero la Asociación Cultural y de Actividades Subacuáticas La Gorgonia no se conforma y se ha propuesto dotarle de más alicientes aún. De ahí su propuesta de construir una exposición permanente de esculturas submarinas. Aunque aún está por determinar el lugar concreto en el que se instalarán las esculturas, el proyecto ha sido aprobado por las autoridades locales. Según los responsables del mismo, el objetivo es que con el paso del tiempo el lugar cuente con un hábitat propio en el que la fauna y la flora convivan en perfecta armonía con las obras de arte.

This year, the festival will be held on 20th and 21st May. In previous editions, each night focussed on a different musical style, with evenings of hip hop, pop/rock, electronic and world music. Las granjas colectivas creadas por grupos de jóvenes judíos en la Palestina de principios del siglo XX cierran su primera centuria, en la actualidad, con un balance de 123.000 personas viviendo en 273 kibbutz. Las comunas que nacieron bajo un ideal de equidad total en salarios e igualdad entre hombres y mujeres han visto modificarse sus principios en función de lo que mandan los tiempos. Según un artículo de Israel21c, solo el 25% de los kibbutz mantienen esta filosofía. El resto concede a sus miembros sueldos diferentes y admite varias formas de propiedad privada. También relajan su noción de vida comunal y permiten el concepto de individualidad y familia.

The collective farms set up in early 20th-century Palestine by groups of young Jews have reached their 100th birthday with a current balance of 123,000 people living in 273 kibbutz. Si vas a La Mancha y te invitan a pipirrana, no pienses mal. Es un plato típico de la zona.

Tan tradicional como el morteruelo, el pisto, los duelos y quebrantos, las migas o las gachas.

Platos todos ellos contundentes por tratarse de una cocina que debe mucho a los pastores de antaño. Ellos mejor que nadie conocían los ingredientes que producía su tierra y cómo combinarlos para saciar el hambre y combatir el frío cuando salían al campo con el ganado.

Por su origen pastoril muchos la califican de humilde. Y seguro que tienen razón. También la tienen los que dicen de ella que es una cocina casera. Incluso los que la consideran austera, siempre y cuando con ello no nieguen la originalidad y la variedad de la gastronomía castellano-manchega. Y luego están los que no dicen nada de ella simplemente porque prefieren reservar su boca para saborearla…

A apenas una hora en coche de Verona, me encontré, por casualidad, con Marostica, también conocido como el pueblo del ajedrez, por el tablero gigante que domina la plaza principal de la localidad. Según he podido investigar, los años pares, se celebra una partida de ajedrez con personajes vivos en el segundo fin de semana de septiembre. La tradición empezó en 1923 e inspiró al dramaturgo Vucetich Mirko a escribir una obra de teatro donde dos nobles deciden resolver sus diferencias sobre quién va a llevar a Lionora al altar, la hija del hombre más poderosos de la ciudad. El pueblo tiene un museo donde se cuenta todo.

Mi primera parada en mi ruta por Rusia fue en San Petersburgo, donde me lancé a hacer Couchsurfing con un amigo. Couchsurfing es una red social donde la gente pone a disposición de viajeros su sofá de manera gratuita. Tuvimos la suerte de tener un huésped muy majo que nos enseñó algunos de los lugares más underground de la ciudad. Si tuviera que escoger entre todos, me quedo con Mod Roof, una terraza en un edificio medio abandonado con música en vivo, barbacoas y un rollito muy relajado para disfrutar de las largas noches veraniegas en la ciudad.

Barely an hour’s drive from Verona, quite by chance, I came across Marostica, also known as the chess village. The name comes from the giant chessboard that dominates its main square. As far as I’ve been able to find out, a chess game using people as live ‘pieces’ is held biannually (even years), during the second weekend in September. The tradition dates back to 1923 and inspired the dramatist, Vucetich Mirko, to write a play in which two nobles decide to resolve their differences over who was to wed the daughter of the most powerful man in the city by playing chess against each other. There’s a museum in the town where you can get the whole story.

The first stop on my trip to Russia was St. Petersburg, where I decided to try out couch surfing together with a friend. CouchSurfing is a social network where people make their sofa available to travellers free of charge.

We were lucky enough to find a host who was really friendly and showed us some of the city’s most underground kind of places. If I had to choose between them all, I’d pick Mod Roof, an open-air space in a half-abandoned building, offering live music, barbeques and a laid back atmosphere to enjoy the city’s long summer nights.

Soy muy fan de la arquitectura Bauhaus y no creo que exista mejor sitio para contemplar este tipo de edificios que Tel Aviv. Ninguna ciudad del mundo cuenta con más ejemplos de esta filosofía de diseño (más de 3.500 inmuebles) que se popularizó en la Alemania de los años 20. Durante mi estancia tuve la suerte de pasar un rato en el Cinema Hotel, uno de los primeros cines de la ciudad reconvertido hoy en un hotel y un precioso ejemplo Bauhaus. El edificio no solo cuenta con una agradable terraza en la azotea para tomarse algo; está lleno de reliquias rescatadas de su pasado cinematográfico. En la entrada emiten películas en blanco y negro y las palomitas las pone la casa.

En Granada, el campo está a un paso, casi literalmente, de la ciudad. Uno de los lugares más reconfortantes para la primavera que comienza se encuentra, caminando, a quince minutos de la urbe. Cuando termina el Paseo de los Tristes, tenemos la opción de comenzar la subida de la Cuesta del Chapiz, al Albaicín, o girar a la derecha y cruzar el río, comenzando el recorrido por el valle que da acomodo al río Darro. Superada la fuente del Avellano, comienza un sendero por la ladera de la montaña que lleva al campo y en el que hay más de un lugar apartado para montarse una merienda sin planearlo demasiado.

Salió el sol y mi estancia en Burdeos para aprender francés cambió por completo. Mañanas intensivas metido en clase para aprender el idioma y tardes tumbado en el Jardin Public con mis compañeros, disfrutando de vino blanco. Este parque situado en el centro de la ciudad posee esa belleza clásica muy característica de la estética francesa y un ambiente multicultural poblado de jóvenes haciendo capoiera y tomando el sol. Pero el interés del parque no es puramente hedonístico. Su interior acoge el Museo de Historia Natural y un jardín botánico de 4 hectáreas.

En resumen, cómprate una buena baguette, unas uvas y una botella de vino de Bordeaux y... ¡disfruta!

I’m a real fan of Bauhaus architecture and I don’t think there’s anywhere better to see these kinds of buildings than in Tel Aviv. No other city in the world has more examples of this design philosophy (there are over 3,500 bauhaus buildings), which became popular in 1920s Germany. During my stay, I was lucky enough to spend a while at the Cinema Hotel, one of the first cinemas in the city - now turned into a hotel – and a wonderful example of this style.

The building not only has a pleasant roof terrace where you can have a bite to eat; it’s also full of cinema relics, rescued from its previous life. They screen black and white films in the entrance lounge and the popcorn is on the house.

In Granada, the countryside is, almost literally, a step away from the city. One of the most relaxing places now that spring is underway is to be found just fifteen minutes’ walk from the centre.

When you get to the end of Paseo de los Tristes, you have to choose whether to walk up the Cuesta del Chapiz, to the Albaicín, or to turn right and cross over the river, setting out on a route through the River Darro valley.

Past the Avellano Fountain, there’s a track along the mountainside leading to open country. There are a number of secluded spots where you can stop for a snack without needing to have it all planned out beforehand.

The sun came out and my stay in Bordeaux, where I’d gone to learn French, changed completely. Intense mornings in language classes and afternoons lying in the Public Garden drinking white wine with my classmates. There’s something special about this park, right in the city centre. It has that classical beauty that’s so characteristically French, and a multicultural atmosphere, with people doing capoiera and sunbathing. But the park’s not just interesting from a hedonistic point of view. Inside, there’s the Natural History Museum and a four-hectare botanical garden. To sum up: buy yourself a good baguette, some grapes and a bottle of Bordeaux…and enjoy!

Cada vez que visito Londres procuro hacer una parada en Koko (antiguamente llamado Camden Palace), un teatro centenario reconvertido, desde hace ya más de 30 años, en un lugar privilegiado para disfrutar de la música independiente y ver bandas en vivo. Pero el espectáculo no se limita a escuchar, también se puede ver en los asistentes que acuden al local cada semana, en una competencia abierta para ver quién tiene el peinado más estrafalario y la ropa más original. Su estructura de teatro antiguo permite refugiarte en los recovecos que encuentras en cada piso y, si te aburres, tienes los pubs y restaurantes de Camden en la misma calle.

En Toulouse se encuentra una de las fábricas de aviones más grandes del mundo. Nunca he sido muy fan de la aeronáutica ni mi trabajo tiene nada que ver con ella, sin embargo, la visita guiada a la factoría es muy recomendable. Un vídeo introductorio acerca de la marca y un recorrido en autocar por todo el recinto preceden a lo más interesante (a mi juicio): la visita a los hangares donde se alojan los modelos terminados y la ruta por dentro de uno de los Concorde que dejaron de operar hace poco menos de una década. Una cosa: no dejan hacer fotos en el interior de las instalaciones.

Quizá producto del monopolio, por llamarlo de alguna manera, que ejerce el Retiro, en Madrid no es muy habitual oir hablar acerca de otros parques, al menos con la frecuencia que se debería. Uno de los que más me gusta, quizá porque está cerca de casa y porque proporciona unos atardeceres preciosos en primavera, es el Parque de la Montaña, justo tras el Templo de Debod. Cuando la temperatura es adecuada, como estas semanas, me encanta irme a leer el periodíco con un refresco en la zona que hay entre el kiosco de música y la Rosaleda. ¡Un océano de paz cerca de un lugar tan ajetreado como la zona de Plaza de España!

Whenever I visit London I try to make it to Koko (previously known as Camden Palace), a hundred year old theatre refurbished over 30 years ago as a prime venue to enjoy independent music and see bands live. But the show isn’t just about listening – you can also check out the audience, who flock there every week in a kind of open competition to see who has the most outlandish hairdo or the most original outfit. The layout of the old theatre means you can escape from it all in any of the nooks and crannies to be found on each floor.

If you get bored, Camden’s pubs and restaurants are on the very same street.

One of the largest aircraft manufacturing plants in the world is in Toulouse.

I’ve never been an aeronautics fan and my job doesn’t have anything to do with planes, but the guided tour of the factory turned out to be great.

There’s an introductory video about the brand and a bus tour around the plant before moving on to the most interesting part (in my opinion): a visit to the hangars where finished models are kept and a look inside one of the Concorde planes that were withdrawn from service just under a decade ago. Just one thing – they don’t let you take photos inside the facility.

Perhaps it’s because of the monopoly – so to speak – that the Retiro park enjoys, but in Madrid, it’s not very common to hear much at all about other parks, at least not as often as we should. One of the parks that I like the most, maybe because it’s close to home and because it plays host to beautiful springtime sunsets, is the Parque de la Montaña, just behind the Templo de Debod. When the temperature is right, like over these few weeks, I love to go read the newspaper and enjoy a cooling drink in the space between the bandstand and the Rosaleda.

An ocean of calm in such a hectic area as Plaza de España!
