A PEEK AT THE JANUARY ISSUE How one Etsy owner quit her day job plus tips on throwing a co-ed shower.
EDITOR'S NOTE Starting a magazine is a bit like having a baby. I've tried both recently, so you'll have to take my word. Both endeavors require a temporary lapse in sanity, sleep deprivation, and a whole lot of cupcake runs. The first several weeks after we had our baby boy, friends and family signed up to bring us mountains of tabouli, fried rice, and Thai turkey wraps (a personal favorite). We didn't lift a finger to put together a meal for more than a month. Most of those weeks are a blur. I do, however, vividly recall crying one night when my husband thoughtlessly double stacked a paper plate. I was sure his gross oversight would lead to a household plate shortage. If we ran out of plates, how would we survive parenthood? Eventually, miraculously, my hormones restored balance, sleep patterns regained normalcy, and my husband breathed a little easier when serving dinner. It takes a village to raise a child. In those weeks following our son's birth, we learned the truth in that clichĂŠ. This launch certainly took a village, but instead of meals, photographers, designers and stylists brought loads of talent, inspiration and hard work to the table. Cheers to my wildly creative friends and colleagues, cheers to my husband with his newfound grasp of paper plate preservation, and cheers to you, our lovely readers. May your holidays be merry and bright. EMMAMAG 03

Wind one piece of accent strip around your wreath and secure with hot glue. Take a burlap square and bunch the corners together. Apply a dot of hot glue to the center of the square. Hold square on wreath for a few seconds to allow the glue time to cool. Continue this around the wreath in several rows, then fill in the holes until your wreath is as full as you like. Tie bow around accent strip with remaining accent fabric strips. 20 EMMAMAG

REFRESHING BRUNCH SIDE THAT REQUIRES NO PREP.
When acheiving an urban rustic feel, you don't want anything too perfect or over-the-top. The table runner acts as a simple backdrop, allowing the food to steal the show. With berry and mustard sample paint jars, I brushed an ombrĂŠ effect onto sunbrella fabric. I love the bold colors and soft texture against the natural wood.
