OH HELLO I

t wasn’t an easy pregnancy - months of morning sickness, a complication deeming it “high risk,” and sheer exhaustion had all taken their toll. We had just moved into our 1950s fixer-upper. Most of the fixing had yet to occur, but in my furious nesting mode I managed to set up our living room complete with a glittery Christmas tree in the front window. Eager to begin our own Christmas day tradition, I invited my entire family over to spend the day with us. I set up a Pinterest-worthy buffet (one that would not be repeated once our little one made his way into the world): chocolate croissants fresh from the oven, orange juice squeezed from the citrus trees lining our new backyard, and an almond berry oatmeal bake.

After a few hours of hosting, the baby growing inside me managed to deplete what little energy I had left, and I quietly slipped into the guest room to rest my eyes. No sooner had I laid my head down than a little flutter in my belly startled me awake. And for the first time I didn’t mistake it for heartburn or indigestion, this little baby was kicking me a merry Christmas! And while the morning sickness, fatigue, and new mama fears didn’t magically disappear, it certainly felt magical. Whether this winter finds you celebrating a new life, a new home, or simply the tried and true traditions from Christmases past, wishing you a merry and bright season.

COOKIE PARTY PHOTOGRAPHY BY RACHEL SOLOMON

Anthony Diaz of Anthony & Stork styled this modern and colorful Christmas cookie party. Invite your little one’s favorite pals over for an afternoon of cookie decorating complete with take home goodies for their next baking day. Venue This white and airy interior designed by Homes by 1962 sets a bright clean backdrop for a modern cookie decorating party. Find a spot in your home with great natural light to achieve the same feel! Decor Bright pink and mint green mix up the traditional color scheme while still feeling festive for a kid-centered baking day. Diaz also hung oven mitts in place of stockings from the mantle. Otherwise, keep things minimal - a few colorful bottle brush trees and fun place settings are all you need to compliment your existing holiday decor. Menu This is a no-brainer! Whip up a batch of homemade sugar cookies, or if you’re in a pinch, contact your local bakery. Ruze Cake House provided these delicious treats for us! To keep kids from a sugar crash offer healthy finger foods to balance their cookie intake. Favors Miniature whisks and tiny chef’s hats mark each child’s place setting, but we all know sweets are the real take-home treats.

Dairy-Free MEATBALLS PHOTOGRAPHY AND RECIPE BY NICOLE LEE

Food blogger at HeyDear.co and no stranger to dietary restrictions, Nicole Lee created this recipe for savory meatballs that are both gluten and dairy-free, but still manage big flavor and great texture. Lee stresses the importance of choosing fresh high quality meat. For the best results, she recommends grass-fed beef.

42 EMMA

Dairy-Free Meatballs INGREDIENTS 1 pound good quality grass fed ground beef 1/2 cup bread crumbs 2 whole fresh eggs 1 bunch of chopped basil 1 bunch of fresh chopped oregano 1 pinch of salt and pepper 1 pinch of dried parsley

PREPARE Preheat your oven to 425 degrees. In a bowl place the meat, all the herbs and the bread crumbs. Set the bowl aside. In a separate bowl crack your eggs. Then add the eggs into the meat mixture. It is key to do this separately to avoid getting any shells in the mix. Squeeze the eggs, meet and other ingredients together until completely combined. If it looks runny, slowly add a tablespoon more of bread crumbs. Hand roll to your liking small or large meatballs. Place the meatballs about an inch apart on the lined baking sheets. Set a time and place the meatballs in the oven for 12 minutes. Then reduce the heat to 350 and turn the pan. Cook for about 5 to 6 minutes until slightly browned on top. Once finished place a tea towel on top and let them cool.

Whip these up for an after school treat or Valentine’s Day party. Second, Jaclyn Bell creator of the food blog CookingClassy.com, shows how to start your day in the sweetest way - with homemade pop tarts of course.

SUPER BOWL SUNDAY PHOTOGRAPHY BY TRACY BATTAGLIA

The ladies behind Football Bettys - a pair of avid football fans and party-planning mamas - designed this Super Bowl Sunday party complete with printable Bingo cards and DIYs a plenty. For those of us less versed in football culture, this year’s big Bowl heads to the Northern California Levi’s Stadium in February, and it’s never too early to start planning! Venue Invite guests into your home and allow them to kick back with good food and wine while watching the game. Provide an outdoor space for kids to run around and play their own game of flag football. Menu For adults, select Northern California wines to coordinate with the San Francisco Super Bowl theme. Arrange your favorite meats, cheeses, and fruits on a cutting board for a fancy yet no-fuss charcuterie board. Finally, bacon-wrapped meatballs are a cinch to throw together at half-time! For the kids, serve Rice Krispie treats, cookies and Gatorade in cups adorned with football play labels. Ask a neighborhood bakery about placing football cookie orders in advance to pick up on the big day. (Ruze Cake House made these football shaped treats!) Bingo Set up a fun game of bingo for your younger guests at your Superbowl party with one of these free printable bingo cards custom to this year’s San Francisco Superbowl! Skittles are the perfect way to track who is winning. DIY To heighten the stakes, make a DIY game of squares for those betting types! Favors The Football Bettys asked their friends at High Jinks Tees to make commemorative 2016 Super Bowl tees - notice the 16 on the back!

DIY Squares Board Materials 12x12x.25 board, unstained, sanded vinegar steel wool gloves old paint brush chalk ink pen ruler pencil No. 1 A few days prior to making your squares board you will need to prep your vinegar stain. For one board you’ll need about 2 cups of vinegar and one pad of steel wool. Pour vinegar into a large mason jar and add the steel wool. Let it oxidize at least overnight, for best results a couple of days. No. 2 When mixture is ready, paint your board front and back using a generous amount of liquid on your brush. Let completely dry. No. 3 Measure out a 10x10 square from the bottom right corner of your board. Make little hash marks with your pencil at each inch on every side of your square. Connect your marks vertically and horizontally until you’ve penciled in your 10x10 grid...you should have 100 squares with a 2 inch border on the left side and top. Mark over your pencil marks with the chalk ink pen. No. 4 In the outside boarder make a smaller 1/2 inch boarder around the 10x10 square. No. 5 With your remaining larger boarder space, handletter the team’s names one on the left, the other across the top with your chalk ink pen. Jazz it up with their logo, or add field markings! No. 6 After your board it complete, you’re ready Betty! Have your guest fill in their names in the amount of squares they paid for. Once every square is filled, and before the game starts, randomly draw the numbers 0-9 from a hat and mark each number in your 1/2 inch boarder around your squares in each row/column. Do it for both teams. The numbers represent the last number in each teams score (I.e the score is Bears 23-Packers 10 at the end of the 1st quarter..find the 3 and the 0 for the corresponding team on your board and follow it to the winning square!) Game on! Hut Hut!
