HUNTSVILLE - If you’re planning on traveling in 2024, the Huntsville airport will look a little bit different thanks to a handful of improvements the airport is making to its facilities. The most extensive of those improvements are the ongoing concourse renovations. The airport is currently working to expand the area between the TSA checkpoint and the concourse level to allow better access to and from the gates. Renovations include adding another elevator and two additional escalators. “The first and last steps of a long journey can be the most crucial for passengers,” said Mary Swanstrom, Public Relations Manager for Huntsville International Airport. “To create the best possible travel experience for our customers at HSV, we are renovating the concourse connector area between the TSA checkpoint in the terminal and the concourse gates by doubling elevator and escalator access and bringing 30-year-old infrastructure up to date.” The improvements not only help the flow in the concourse connector area but also make it more accessible for flyers with disabilities by updating the infrastructure to Americans with Disabilities Act standards. The updated area will also have modern glass and stainless-steel features. The $13.3 million project is largely funded by a $10 million grant from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law while the rest is covered by the FAA. The project began back in the summer of 2023 and is expected to be completed later this year. While construction continues, travelers are being redirected through a system of ramps to reach their destinations in the airport smoothly. The Alabama legislature passed a bill last summer laying the foundation for Safe Haven Baby Boxes to reach cities across the state,

Madison Utilities to increase rates for water and wastewater By STAFF REPORTS news@themadisonrecord.com
MADISON – Madison Utilities has announced an increase in water and wastewater rates for residential customers. In a public information notice mailed to customers, utility officials stated, “Due to the continuous growth in our area, Madison Utilities is in the process of significantly expanding and improving its infrastructure to insure there is an adequate supply of water for the residents and businesses of the City of Madison.” “These improvements include projects that are estimated at over $68 million and will require borrowing to accomplish. Along with borrowing comes additional debt service (principal and interest) payments to the bond holders. In order to repay these debt payments, increases to our rates are required.” “Recently, Raftelis Financial Consultants or RFC performed a detailed rate study for Madison Utilities. They examined each operating system’s (Water and Wastewater) current and future operations and maintenance costs, funding requirements and long-term capital plans. Also analyzed were consumer consumption trends for both domestic, commercial and irrigation accounts.” “Further, they performed a costof-service analysis of our monthly base fees charged per meter. Lawmakers join letter opposing proposed ADPH rule change on COVID reporting By CRAIG MONGER www.1819news.com MONTGOMERY - A group of lawmakers recently sent a letter to the Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) relating to continued state reporting of COVID-19. ADPH previously announced the proposed rule change and scheduled the public comment portion. Many in the state swiftly took umbrage with the proposed rules as they continue implementing mandatory COVID-19 reporting requirements for many deemed at higher risk. The new rule removes many CDC-required mandatory reporting requirements for medical professionals from the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the rule would retain portions requiring mandatory reporting of positive and suspected cases of COVID for those in “congregate living facilities.” The rule shortens the mandatory reporting requirement for specific individuals from five days to three. Congregate living facilities are defined as a “facility where persons reside and share common spaces with other residents, and “can include, but are not limited to, residential care facilities, assisted living facilities, intermediate care facilities, skilled nursing facilities, jails, prisons, shelters, mental health facilities, dormitories, and resident summer camps.” The proposed rule drew the skeptical eye of the Alabama-based medical advocacy group Health Freedom Alabama (HFA) and State Rep. Ernie Yarbrough (R-Trinity). At a public hearing last month, Yarbrough joined representatives from HFA and other concerned citizens to oppose the rule change. Recently, Yarbrough and other lawmakers signed a letter further opposing the proposed rule change, “The last several years have been incredibly hard on Alabamians, and much troubling information has come to light regarding the COVID pandemic that will probably merit honest and thorough investi-
gation for years to come,” the letter says. “Many Alabamians had their jobs, careers, health, and freedoms destroyed or greatly undermined simply for asking questions or doing what they believe best for their own health and families. Individuals and small business took the brunt of the fear tactics and overreach by federal and state agencies.” The letter was signed by Yarbrough, along with State Reps. Ben Harrison (R-Cartwright), Rick Rehm (R-Dothan), Mack Butler (R-Rainbow City), Arnold Mooney (R-Indian Springs), Bill Lamb (R–Tuscaloosa), Ritchie Whorton (R-Owens Cross Roads) and State Sen. Arthur Orr (R-Decatur). The lawmakers also pointed to an attempted ADPH rule change in 2020 that would have eliminated public hearings before the agency passes new regulations. “Trust is future expectations based on past performance,” the letter continued. “The collection and manipulation of data in the COVID pandemic is a perfect example of why Americans – and Alabamians – are hesitant to relinquish personal data to government entities. The previous proposed rule change by the ADPH – to eliminate the required public hearings for proposed rule changes – further eroded public trust as it clearly communicates a desire to avoid transparency.” “We must show trust in our people – and their relationship with their personal doctors - to make the right decisions for their own health and personal information. At this point, moving forward with continued COVID data collection as outlined in the proposed rule change will only further erode remaining public trust and will draw the attention and fixed purpose of the people and their legislative representation to address these issues.” An ADPH spokesperson previously told 1819 News that HFA’s claims are completely false, and the rule is meant to drop the majority of reporting requirements from the CDC. But at least we’re used to dealing with extreme heat. Extreme cold is another thing entirely. Extreme cold is once again here for north Alabama, and it is a test of the area’s resources and preparedness.

is over. I personally feel that there is only one other Alabama coach who could even compare to Saban, and that is Coach “Bear” Bryant. Saban is definitely leaving a legacy and an expectation for current players and future players as well. But we do know that the coach is not the only piece to the puzzle. In fact, if not for players, there would be no game. Nevertheless, the coach does play an essential part in the game of football. I watched my dad coach my little brother as I was growing up, and I remember thinking to myself, “He sure is being a little tough on those boys!” I was so wrong. The older the boys got, the more I realized how much they needed the tough love and discipline of the coach to stay strong and fight through to the next play.
That type of coaching was exactly what Saban showed every day. He was consistent. He expected the very best from his players. “Mediocre people don’t like high achievers, and high achievers don’t like mediocre people,” Saban said. It wasn’t about being fair when it came to playing time; it was about who showed up and who worked the hardest. Thus, to be able to play for the University of Alabama football team was and always will be an honor for any kid that walks out on that field. In true Nick Saban fashion, he will still be watching over the Alabama players. The game won’t stop just because Saban moved his office down the hall instead of being on the field. “I’m gonna be here,” he said in a recent interview. “I’m gonna stay in Tusca-

A little more than a year ago, on Dec. 23 and 24, 2022, the Tennessee Valley Authority instituted its first rolling blackouts in the federal utility’s 90-year history. That was when Winter Storm Elliott plunged much of the eastern United States into the deep freeze. According to National Weather Service data, Huntsville recorded lows of 3 and 9 degrees on Dec. 23 and 24, 2022, with daytime highs those days reaching only 20 and 27 degrees. Those conditions strained utilities up and down the eastern twothirds of the nation. “Every power company basically east of the Rockies was struggling just because the scope and speed of the storm was so severe,” TVA spokesman Scott Fiedler told The Decatur Daily last month. “What

I know some of you are going to think I’m out of my mind, and maybe I am. I bought tickets to see the Rolling Stones. Yes, the guys who are in their late 70s and early 80s; the guys whose faces have more wrinkles than a cotton shirt left in the dryer; the guys whose tour is sponsored by AARP - I’m going to see those guys. When their new song came out, which is great by the way, I forwarded the video to a lifelong friend of mine who’s a big Stones fan. My message at the bottom of the email said 4 words: anytime, anywhere, any price. I kept true to my word. They’re coming and we’re going. If you haven’t bought tickets for a concert lately, you are going to be in for a shock. Ticket prices for premium artists haven’t just gone through the roof; they’ve gone beyond the stratosphere. In the case of the Stones, they know their fans who paid five bucks for tickets fifty years ago can now afford to pay a hundred times that much. Nostalgia ain’t cheap folks. However, the way I look at it is, if they ever tour again, I probably won’t be able to climb the stadium stairs, and they probably won’t know where they are. This will be the fifth time for me to see them in concert, so I’m calling it a “last in a lifetime opportunity”.
The first time I saw the Rolling Stones I was 12 years old. They were co-headlining with The Beach Boys at Legion Field in Birmingham. The presale price was $4.50, and despite that huge fifty cent price savings, my mom opted for convenience, so we paid the up charge. That was then. Now, you have to have the Ticketmaster app on your phone. And be prepared. If you’re lucky enough to get a presale code, which may take dozens of tries, you pick your seats out, then hope you’ve put the in the correct credit card number. If all goes well, soon the tickets magically pop up on your iPhone. Personally, I hate that we are deprived of having an actual ticket. For so many of us who grew up in that era, in that era, keeping that stub was a reminder, a status symbol that we would admire on our mirror for months following the concert. Kindergartners can register for their own chess tournament, set for Feb. 3 By STAFF REPORTS news@themadisonrecord.com HUNTSVILLE – MADISON – The youngest group of chess competitors in Madison City Chess League or MCCL will vie for bragging rights in their grade-specific contest, the annual MCCL Kindergarten Chess Tournament. For this meet that MCCL sponsors each year, the kindergartners will convene at Rainbow Elementary School on Feb. 3.
“If you have a kindergarten chess player, this is a great, low-pressure practice tournament for them,” MCCL Executive Director Todd Guthrie said. “It is a non-rated tournament, so a U.S. Chess membership is not required.” The MCCL Kindergarten Chess Tournament is open to any kindergarten or pre-kindergarten student. Registration is capped at the first 20 players who register online. A players’ meeting at 8:45 a.m.
in Rainbow’s Library Media Center will open the tournament. Games will have 15 minutes per side. Players will compete in five rounds, if time permits. Tournament play will open at 9 a.m. Guthrie expects the event to conclude approximately at noon. “This non-rated tournament will be great practice for the Kindergarten Section of the Madison City Chess Championship” that is scheduled for March 1-2, Guthrie said.
For the kindergarten tournament’s awards, players who rank in first through fifth place will receive a trophy. “All other competitors will receive a medal. The awards ceremony will occur at approximately noon,” Guthrie said. Deadline to register online is Jan. 31. Tournament officials may extend this date if a maximum of 20 players has not signed up. Onsite registration will not be available at this tournament. Entry fee for the kindergar-
ten tournament is $20 for MCCL members (savings for MCCL members will appear after the tournament is added to your cart during online registration). The fee is $25 for players who are not MCCL members. In upcoming competitions, the ChessKid National Festival will be held in downtown Charlotte, N.C. on Feb. 16-19. MADISON - It was finally the James Clemens girls’ night. The Lady Jets were in control on the road last Friday against Bob Jones, their cross-town nemesis who seemingly always beats them of late. They were playing at the Bob Jones gym of all places. JC was finally going to get them after a couple of seasons of frustrating losses to its bitter rival. The gym was packed full of fans screaming for action and they got that and then some from this game. Bob Jones trailed the entire contest but found a way to score with 22 seconds remaining to jump over the Jets and leave them confused about how they came up short again. “I really wasn’t that concerned with how slow we started with our shots not falling,” Bob Jones head coach Jazmine Carr said. “Sometimes the ball is not go-

The Legacy Of Dr. MarTin LuTher King, Jr.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a civil rights activist from Atlanta, Georgia. He was born on January 15, 1929, and was a minister like his father. He became the Pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama, in 1953. Dr. King and his wife, Coretta Scott King, had four children. He began his non-violent civil rights activism in the 1950s. He led the Montgomery Bus Boycott that began when Mrs. Rosa Parks refused to give her bus seat to a white man. King emphasized the use of non-violent protest through the use of boycotts, sit-ins, and rallies and speeches. His most famous moment as a public speaker was the “I Have a Dream” speech made during the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. His words from that day have echoed through history and are still taught to children today. King was also well-known for his written works, such as the piece “Letters from Birmingham Jail” written during an incarceration after his arrest at a non-violent protest. He helped bring about changes such as the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Dr. King won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964, as well as the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the American Liberties Medallion in 1965, for his efforts to create equality among all races. Dr. King was assassinated by James Earl Ray on April 4, 1968, while organizing a local march in Memphis, Tennessee. On January 20, 1986, the first Martin Luther King Day was observed after being signed into law as a national holiday by President Ronald Reagan. Each year since, Martin Luther King Day is celebrated every third Monday in January to honor the late Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

SPARKMAN CHEER CO-ED STATE CHAMPS - Sparkman High won the recently held AHSAA State Cheer Competition in the Varsity Co-ed Division. MADISON - The 2024 training programs hosted by Fleet Feet of Madison and Huntsville are geared towards helping those who may have the desire to get started in running, assist those who want to better their already established times in certain races and any individual who may want to begin a program. The new year brings a new schedule of running events across the Tennessee Valley and Fleet Feet of Madison/Huntsville has training programs set for the next 12 months to assist a runner of any caliber to reach their goals set forth by each individual runner. On the surface, it looks simple enough to zip through a training program and tackle any race your legs take you to, but especially for novice runners, the challenge of prepping for an athletic endeavor should be faced up front knowing it takes hard work and determination to compete. Many of the challenges that are brought to the forefront for any runner is made up of tiny pieces of the endeavor that must fall into place. Training programs arranged by Fleet Feet help those pieces of the puzzle come together with major success. Fleet Feet Sports has a bevy of training programs on tap for 2024.

The programs are geared towards runners of all calibers, but non-runners are also invited to join in an attempt for better health. “The Madison running community is healthy and committed to fitness in 2024,” said Suzanne Swift, owner of Fleet Feet Sports. One of the most attended programs on a yearly basis is the Half-Marathon Training with the main focus on the Bridge Street Half-Marathon scheduled for Sunday, April 7 or the Oak Barrel Half-Marathon set for April 6. The 12-week program, which began Jan. 9, is held at both the Madison and Huntsville locations of Fleet Feet. Education on proper form, pacing, fueling, stretching and more will be in the forefront by expert coaches on hand to assist any level of participant. The program also includes a daily running schedule as group runs are held each Tuesday and Saturday. Head coaches for the program are Paul Moeller in Madison and Julia Donovan in Huntsville. “We are excited to offer a 12-week half-marathon training program for the Bridge Street event and we are looking forward to offering more training programs this Spring, especially in Madison,” added Swift. He has posted a 4.8 in the 40 and has a tremendous 82-inch wingspan.

One issue that Bob Jones had to maneuver in this game was the Lady Jets use of their bigs, Jazmin Grigsby who scored eight and Serenity Pride who tallied six points in the paint. Those two Lady Jets used their strength and size to rack up the majority of the rebounds in the game and force the Lady Patriots to attempt shots predominantly from the outside. “We wanted to try to create sporadic traps off the ball screen and kind of beat them up a little bit,” Carr said. “Trying to force them into some turnovers and I think that definitely paid off for us.” James Clemens used their size to take the lead in the first quarter at 11-7 as Bob Jones was struggling to sink 3-point shots early on. By halftime, the Lady Jets continued to control the game up 21-15, but the Lady Patriots were still in shouting distance with a half to go. A 3-point shot by Obianozie with 1:25 to go in the third quarter made it 25-22 JC, but a field goal by Grigsby pushed it to 27-22 Lady Jets by the end of the quarter. Bob Jones was running out of time or did the Lady Patriots have James Clemens right where they
wanted them as their pressure had started to take a toll on the Lady Jets. Lady Patriot Zamyra Goode drained a field goal to make it 29-24 with 4:57 to play in the fourth quarter and what happened next might have been the sequence of the game. James Clemens got the ball back only to have it snatched by Goode for an easy layup for a 29-26 score. A second consecutive steal by Obianozie on the very next possession resulted in another two points for Bob Jones who was suddenly one point away from knotting the game up at 29-28 with 4:13 on the scoreboard. A field goal by Lady Jet senior Gabriella Stigger gave JC a little more breathing room at 31-28 with 2:56 remaining, but Obianozie could not be denied down the stretch of this battle with another key basket to make it 31-30 James Clemens at the 1:33 mark. With 42.3 left in the fourth quarter, Lady Patriot senior Janiyah Bone looked like she had a clear path to the basket as she sprinted down the lane for the massive layup that would hand her team the lead for the first time in the game. As Bone’s hand with the basketball neared the rim, Deyon Smith in her sky-blue uniform rippling in
the air swatted the ball downward out of bounds. Bob Jones had the ball and took a timeout with 32.9 seconds remaining to come up with a plan of attack. The crowd was in hysterics as the ball found Bone in the corner for the game-winning 3-pointer as the clock spun wildly downward near nothingness. Bone’s shot seemed to drift through the air in slow motion as the other players sprinted to get under the basket. The ball rattled off of the rim and the crowd gave an uptick of screams as Obianozie ended up with the frantic rebound. With 22 seconds to play, Obianozie put the ball back up for the game-winning basket that made it 32-31 Bob Jones. “I would say that defense really won this game,” Carr said. “But you know also just the belief like I don’t feel like any of my girls panicked. I didn’t panic. I thought it was a great game. My hat goes off to James Clemens. They were well prepared.” Bob Jones is back in action this Friday at home against Florence at 6 p.m. while James Clemens plays host to Austin at 6 p.m. These two rival schools will meet again on Jan. 26 at James Clemens.

Bob Jones junior Kaden Rickard is making waves among college recruiters and “makes the game look easy” Alabama baseball returns to Toyota Field to host Belmont in March

MADISON - Coaches within the Bob Jones boys basketball program are dealing with only two returning players who had varsity experience coming into the current 2023-2024 season. But waiting in the wings of experience was a player that Bob Jones head coach Bryant Starkey called, “makes the game look easy.” The talents of team newcomer Kaden Rickard are shinning brightly midway through the current season for the Patriots as the junior guard-forward is hitting 15.4 points and grabbing 6.8 rebounds per game. Like Starkey, who is in his first season as head coach, Rickard is in his first season with Bob Jones transferring from Westminster where he was a two-year starter. Though new to the Patriots’ program, Rickard is not new to Madison. Matter of fact, he was born in Madison, grew up here and still lives in the same moderate home of his childhood with his mother, Andrea Rickard. “I began playing basketball as a fiveyear old in the BAM youth league held mostly at Dublin Memorial Park and played here through my years at Discovery Middle School,” said the 17-year old Rickard. “At that time, AAU basketball over and I also began to attend Westminster. I’m glad to be back playing here in Madison.” Those associated with the Bob Jones program are glad to have him on board as the 6-foot-6 guard/forward brings a heaping of great athletic talent to the squad which went 20-11 last season in what was Starkey’s fourth season on the Bob Jones staff as an assistant coach. Rickard also carries a wealth of knowledge of the game having a high basketball IQ. “He has one of the highest basketball IQ’s I’ve been around,” said Starkey. “Typically, when he comes to us as coaches during a game with something he is seeing on the floor, we are able to make adjustments from his observations.” “That comes from my knowledge of the game as I feel I can see things happening in the game I feel others can’t,” said Rickard. “I seem to know when things are going to happen. I feel I have good eyes with great awareness on the court.” With the team roster filled mostly with underclassmen, Rickard has taken it upon himself to mention the young players and share his knowledge and vast experience with those looking to grow on the team and within the sport. “He is one of the few players we have that had previous varsity experience, so he was able to take some of the pressure off our young guys at the beginning of the season and allow them to settle in their roles,” said Starkey. “Kaden is a leader on and off the court and in the

Bob Jones junior Kaden Rickard classroom. He does a good job of motivating our guys.” As a player, Rickard is having an outstanding season helping the Pats on both ends of the court. He’s scoring 15.4 points per game along with 6.8 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 2.3 deflections and 2.6 steals. Starkey added, “I think his biggest strengths are finishing around the basket through contact and getting where he wants to go on the court. He has an incredible ability to read the ball off the rim when rebounding and is a great defensive player. He has the perfect skill set to have a lot of success at any level of college basketball.” Rickard is receiving plenty of looks from schools including Troy, Murray State and Samford. “I want to play in college where I can fit in,” said Rickard with a current 3.2 grade point average and desire to study business. “I feel I’m a team player and can setup the offense and take hold of the game,” said Rickard. “I feel I rebound well and have good foot work. I need to work on my confidence of shooting outside more. I’m an above average shot blocker, but need to be more aggressive.” Rickard is the only child to his mother, who Rickard gives credit to for encouraging him to try the sport along with his

playing youth football until he made his way into middle school. Andrea and her son could be seen many times outside playing roundball where she would take the time to show him the dos and don’ts of the game. “My mom played high school and college basketball and she would coach me whenever we played together,” said Rickard. “She was an assistant coach on one of my youth teams, too. I was guided by her, and she’s been a big inspiration for me. Her coaching of me got me to where I am now.” Standing 6-6, Rickard also has a wingspan of 68 inches. He’s using those talents for not only Bob Jones, but on his AAU team called Pro1. The team is based here locally. His previous AAU team was based in Georgia and went by the name The Atlanta Express and his travels to play have included stops in Arizona, South Carolina, Florida and Georgia, but Rickard likes home base the most. He can be seen shooting hoops with his friends at the Madison YMCA, as well as, inside the confines of the gymnasium at Bob Jones. For Rickard, his teammates and coaching staff, seeing him play up to his potential makes the team better and the game look easy.

Local runners show off at Ice Breaker Indoor Track Invitational Records broken at Birmingham event By BOB LABBE bob@themadisonrecord.com BIRMINGHAM - Members of both the James Clemens and Bob Jones indoor track teams showed off with stellar performances at the Ice Breaker Indoor Track Invitational held at Birmingham’s CrossPlex. The meet featured 110 schools from Alabama and Mississippi from which 1,800 athletes participated. James Clemens won eight medals, had 10 scoring performances, set two school records and ran the nation’s fastest time in the boys 4x800. Bob Jones had two medal winning performances where the brother sister tandem of Jordan and Alivia Urrutia took home performance medals. The senior Jordan won the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.94 while freshman Alivia captured a thirdplace medal with a time of 57.75 in the girls 400 meter. The James Clemens distance runners had a dominating day beginning with the first event the boys 4X800 relay. The Jets won first place gold medals with the fastest time in the U.S. this year. Their time broke their school record by eight seconds and was 15 seconds ahead of the next team, Huntsville. The Jets ran a 7:56.50 leading the country’s second place squad by four seconds. The 4x800 team members included Luke Alverson (1:56.8), Cole Robinson (1:59.13), John Luke Stovall 2:02.64 and Dylan Dryer 1:57.25. Alverson also won a gold medal with a first-place finish in the 1,600 meter in 4:21.19. Robinson also took a third-
place medal in the 1,600 meter with a finish time of 4:24.55. On the girls side, Kylie Cole set a new personal best while winning the 3,200 meter with a time of 11:50.14. The Lady Jets continued the strong team distance performance as they claimed medals in the 4x800 and the 3,200. In the 4x800, finishing in second place earning the silver medal, the Jets posted a time of 9:56.53, which is second best in Alabama. This also broke the school record. Relay members included Emma Bothern, Kayla Willett, Kylie Gero and Ella Carter. The Jets were led in the sprints, hurdles and relays: Benjamin Thomason claimed a fourth-place medal in the 60m hurdles (8.37); 4x400 finished with a silver medal performance with a 3:33.76 with team members Ben Thomason, Isaac Pollard, Napoleon Totten and Ezion Rolingson. Erihana Johnson continued her scoring success in the 60m with a State qualifying performance of 8.03. Both the girls and boys 4x200 moved into qualifying positions. The girls featured Emma Bothern, Ella Carter, Reynna Mayers and Erihana Johnson. The boys included Johnny Ross, Ezion Rolingson, Napoleon Totten and Cymir Zeigler. The Jets’ other medal performance and scoring performance was set by Austin Abney winning a fifth-place medal in the pole vault at 13-0. For Bob Jones, Samual Jackson took fifth-place in the boys triple jump at 44-03 and Jasmyne Rochelle posted a height of 4-10 for a fourth-place finish in the girls high jump.

The award-winning team members of James Clemens Esports will serve guests at a pancake breakfast at Applebee’s

to purchase docking stations with an RJ45 port,” Paquette said. Setting goals for James Clemens teams in 2024, Paquette “would love to see the two State Champions receive invitations to the National Championships and then have them win in June. I would also like to see more students come out to participate.” “We don’t have a Rocket League team right now, and we need Splatoon players,” she said about other New Year goals.

Throughout history, many people have become well-known for their contributions to philosophy, medicine, science, mathematics, and more. They are responsible for some of the greatest discoveries in recorded history. Sir Isaac Newton was a genius born in 1643. He is most famous for the discovery of gravity, which is often explained with a story about an apple falling, though no one knows for sure. He also created calculus, the mathematical study of change, and identified that white light consists of the colors of the rainbow. Ada Lovelace was a brilliant mathematician in the early 1800’s. She wrote the first algorithm for a computing machine and is considered the first computer programmer. Marie Curie, born in 1867, was the scientist who discovered the elements radium and polonium. She created the term “radioactive” and found that radiation could help treat cancer. Albert Einstein was born in 1879. Einstein was a poor student; he left grade school at 15 but became one of the most famous geniuses of all time for his Theory of Relativity, changing the way scientists look at space and time. Nicola Tesla, born in 1846, was a genius in the field of electrical engineering. He discovered that electricity could flow both ways, called alternating current, or AC power, and that electricity can be transferred wirelessly, a technique that is just starting to be used today. The car company Tesla was named after him. Rosalind Franklin was born in 1920; she discovered DNA and began research on viruses. Stephen Hawking was born in 1942 and was well-known for being a brilliant astrophysicist despite his ongoing battle with the disease ALS. He discovered that black holes emit radiation and made it possible for future scientists to study them. Today, one of the greatest thinkers is Neil deGrasse Tyson, an astrophysicist who is a master at explaining science to the public. He is most well-known for his research on the planet Pluto, which resulted in its declassification as a Dwarf Planet.

And this I speak for your own profit; not that I may cast a snare upon you, but for that which is comely, and that ye may attend upon the Lord without distraction.1 Corinthians 7:35 Just like you can have a cluttered home you also can have a cluttered mind with things coming at from everywhere and you have to decide what is necessary and what you can do without. Even things like non-stop noise from devices, radios, TV’s, and so forth. How can you have true peace when you can’t step back from distractions and simply talk to God in prayer? This week I have been participating online in 21 Days of Prayer and Fasting from Alabama’s Church of the Highlands. Monday 1000 church-
es across the US were live streaming which in Mountain Time Zone is 5 a.m. www.churchofthehighlands.com and then click 21 Days of Prayer. A great way to begin the year here on the 12th day. You can be so distracted that you have a hard time discerning and hearing the voice of God. Satan loves distracted people because they have little time to pursue a relationship with the Lord. Could you use a reset when it comes to being still and saying no to distractions? PRAYER: Lord God, I want to order my life, so it is a life of less confusion and me thinking I have to fill up every waking moment to prove myself. By DAWN REED Herod was a terrible person. We know it from the Bible (Matthew 2); history records his evil deeds. He’s been the bad guy of the Christmas story for a long time. Though thousands of years have passed, we can still learn from his notorious ways. Make that what not to do. When the wise men came to Jerusalem asking about the king of the Jews, Herod was quite upset. Matthew 2:3 reports he “was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him.” Herod sat on an embellished throne of his way or the highway. He had no room to share with anyone else, no matter what the prophets had foretold. “And all Jerusalem with him” meant “if Herod wasn’t happy, nobody was happy.” He wanted two things: to remain on the throne and the location of the newborn King. He didn’t care at all to cause suffering for either. If we are not careful, we can let the heart of Herod seep into our daily life. One day just before Christmas, I became terribly upset about a non-family situation. You wouldn’t have known it unless you looked at my eyes. Beneath the surface brewed a smoldering furnace of anger. It burned in my chest. I pondered why I was so irritated.

The Dance Company to host auditions for renowned Joffrey Ballet School By GREGG PARKER gregg@themadisonrecord.com MADISON – The prestigious Joffrey Ballet School, based in New York City, has requested to conduct Summer Auditions at The Dance Company Inc. at 19 Hughes Road in Madison. “To be able to host the Joffrey Ballet School auditions at The Dance Company is an amazing honor. Many times, dancers who wish to further their dance education through summer or yearround programs are traveling to larger cities to well-known ballet schools and companies,” Beth Cannon said. Julie George and Cannon are owners of The Dance Company. The Joffrey auditions will extend an opportunity that local dance students may not have considered. “For our particular dancers, to audition in a familiar setting allows dancers to feel more at ease during a naturally anxious and stressful moment in life,” George said. “We’re truly honored to have this opportunity to host and provide a space for students in North Alabama to audition.” “The Joffrey Ballet Company ranks as one of the top ballet companies in the world,” Melissa Barnett said. Barnett is Corps de Ballet Director for The Dance Company. Joffrey contacted TDC
because a Joffrey staff member was familiar with The Dance Company and its ballet program. “They were looking for a school to utilize for their upcoming summer intensive and school programs audition tour,” Barnett said. “We have many former students and staff members who either attended summer intensives there or training programs through them.” “We’re excited to have the audition in-house to offer such an extraordinary opportunity to our students,” Cannon said. “Joffrey asked to host the event here because they were looking for a location in Alabama.” The audition is open to the public; interested dancers can register with Joffrey’s website. In 1953, Robert Joffrey and Gerald Arpino founded Joffrey Ballet School in New York City’s Greenwich Village. The school has a reputation for educating dancers as strong technicians who are versatile, open-minded and adaptable in the ever-changing world of dance. U.S. Navy Concert Band to perform free concert at Huntsville High on Feb. 13 By GREGG PARKER gregg@themadisonrecord.com MADISON - Touring the country since 1925, the United States Navy Concert Band has scheduled a free concert in Huntsville. The concert venue will be Huntsville High School Auditorium, 2304 Billie Watkins St., on Feb. 13 at 7 p.m. Associated with the band’s 2024 national tour, the performance by the U.S. Navy’s premier band for North Alabama will be free and open to the public. This family-friendly event’s objective is to connect with veterans, families, individuals and those interested in joining the Navy. The U.S. Navy Concert Band
is the top-tier wind ensemble for this military branch. As the original ensemble of the Navy Band, the Concert Band has been performing public concerts and participating in high-profile events for 99 years. The band performs a wide array of marches, patriotic selections, orchestral transcriptions and modern wind compositions. The full ensemble, along with small groups of varied instrumentation and voices, can entertain in several music genres. A trio of strings, primarily violins or ‘fiddles’ in this scenario, can deliver a toe-tapping country tune. The jazz ensemble plays upbeat standards from the 1940s to contemporary times. These musicians have mastered a vast
repertoire. Past tours have included performances at major municipal halls, community centers, countless universities, outdoor venues and the American Bandmasters Association Annual Convention. These patriotic concerts range from traditional to contemporary and showcase the versatility of the band’s different units. Ensembles from the Navy Band tour nationally for 12 to 15 weeks each year. Sailors in the Navy Band are full-time professional musicians. Most sailors in the Navy Band have undergraduate degrees in music, and many have graduate degrees. Each year, all the band’s primary performing units tour on concert tours throughout spec-
ified regions of the country. This schedule allows the band to reach out to audiences that do not have opportunities to see the Navy’s musicians regularly. “For many years, Navy bands have been where it matters, when it matters, just like the rest of our Navy. Today, we have sailors performing around
