MADISON-Lastweek,athird infantwassurrenderedatthe MadisonSafeHavenBabyBox. Thechildwasanonymously surrenderedattheSafeHaven BabyBoxlocatedatMadisonFire Station1.Thisisthethirdsince thebox’sopeningonJan.10.The boxwasquicklyusedforthe rst timeonJan.21andforasecond timeinFebruary.

Inastatement,thecitysaid,

“TheCityofMaisonrecognizes theimmenseneedforresources formothers-in-crisis,andwillcontinuetoprovidetrustedemergencyresponsetoeveryinfantplaced intheSafeHavenBox.Furtherresourcesareavailablethroughthe SafeHavenOrganizationwithfree con dentialcounselingviatheir hotline1-866-998BABY1.”

SafeHavenBabyBoxesoffer asafeandanonymouswayfora parenttosurrendertheirnewbornchild.ChangesinAlabama law,ledbyMadison-basedKidsto Lovelastyear,increasedthetime inwhichaparentcanlegallysurrendertheirchildto45daysold andallowedforSafeHavenBaby Boxestoenterthestate.Madison wasthe rstcityinAlabamato haveaSafeHavenBabyBox,and atleastnineothercitiesacrossthe statehavealreadyorareplanning tofollowsuit.

TwentyyearoldPrivateJ.D. Luna,asalesclerkinHuntsville priortothewar,volunteeredto beaparatrooperandjumped intoNormandywiththeU.S.Army’s101stAirborneDivisionin theearlyhoursofJune6,1944.

Twenty-sevenyearoldSergeantCharlieW.Grayson,who hadbeenaconstructionworker forthegovernmentinNewHope, servedinananti-tankcompanyintheU.S.Army4thInfantryDivision,whichwasinthe rstwavetogoashoreatUtah Beachlaterthatmorning.Both oftheseyoungmenwerekilled inactionthatday,andthereare

severalotherlocalswhotook partinD-Dayandwerekilledin thedaysthatfollowedtheinitial landings.

TheHunt’sSpringChapterof theNationalDaughtersofthe AmericanRevolutionwillholda memorialeventat10:00a.m.on June6,2024attheChurchofthe NativityinHuntsvilletohonor andrememberthesacri ceof theselocalheroes,andallthose whopaidthepriceoffreedomon D-Day.

ThestoriesofPvtLunaand SgtGraysonwerewrittenas partoftheStoriesBehindthe Starsproject,anationwide non-pro tfoundedin2020.The projectendeavorstoensurethat eachandeveryoneofthe421,000 plusAmericanservicemenand womenwhopaidtheultimate pricetopreserveourfreedoms inWorldWarIIareremembered asmorethanjustastatisticina bookoragravemarkerinalocal cemetery.Theprojectisnamed

“Huntsvilleisaverysmartmarket.It’samarketthatreallycelebratesculture.It’samarketthat reallyvaluesthesetypesofexperiencesjustfromtheresearchthat wedid.Webasicallyjustdecided thatitwastheplacetocomewhere peoplewouldreallyappreciatethis work,andalsofromthetechnology perspective.Withallthetechnology that’sinHuntsvillebeingdeveloped there,wethoughtthatitwouldbea nicenodtoallthetechnologythat’s beingcreatedthereaswell.”

VanGogh:TheImmersiveExperiencegoesbeyondatypicalartdisplaybydelvingintotheartist’slife. Walkingthroughtheexhibitislike walkingthroughhislifefromhis earlyyearstotheendofhislife.

StarryNightisoneofthepaintingsfeaturedintheimmersivegallery.ExhibitionHub’shigh-techpro-

afterthegoldstarbannerthat familiesofanAmericanservice memberlostinWWIIdisplayed intheirwindow.

BobFuerst,aNASAengineer inHuntsville,servesastheAlabamaStateDirectorfortheStoriesBehindtheStarsproject, andleadsasmallteamofvolunteersfromacrossthestatewho havesofarresearchedandwrit-

jectionsystemimmersesyouinthis renownedpainting,whichbecause oftheshortbrushstrokes,inspired byJapaneseart,usedbyVanGogh makethepaintingappearcrispon theprojections.

Zallersaystheychosetomake StarryNightasigni cantpartof theexhibitbecauseit’soneofVan Gogh’smostfamousworksandfor itsextraordinarytechniqueand uniqueperspectiveonthenightsky.

“It’semblematicofVanGogh’s entirestylewherehesaid,‘I’mgoingtopaintadifferentway.I’mgoingtopaintnotjustwhatI’mseeing butwhatI’mfeeling.’Andhefeltthe powerofthosestarsintheskyin suchawaythattheybecamethese glowingorbs,theseswirlingglowing orbs,”explainedZaller.“It,really, inaway,sumsuphisworksopowerfullythatwedecidedthatitreally neededtobefeaturedanditreallyis featuredrightinthemiddleofthe immersiveexperience.”

AfterexploringVanGoghtheartist,thegalleriesthatfollowtheclimacticdisplayofStarryNightand otherfamouspaintingsexploreVan

tenstoriesofmorethan5,000of theover6,300Alabamianswho losttheirlivesduringWWII. Allstorieswrittenfortheprojectarebeingsavedtoacommon onlinedatabasesotheycanbe easilyviewedbyanyone.The storiesarealsobeingsharedon adailybasisviaaFacebookpage namedRememberingAlabama WWIIFallen. Bobisjustoneofhundreds ofStoriesBehindtheStarsvolunteers,fromall50statesanda dozenothercountries,researchingandwritingstoriesofWWII fallen.Thevolunteerscome fromallagesandbackgrounds; someareasyoungasjuniorhigh schoolwhileothersareretired. Whilesomeareamateurgenealogistsorseasonedresearchers withyearsofexperience,most arenot.StoriesBehindtheStars providesonlinetraininginhow toresearchandwritethestories, aswellasfreeaccesstokeyonlineresearchsites.Theproject

“Wegiveyouaglimpseintosomeof thestrugglesheincurredasanartist andasahumanbeingwithareally beautifulwrapupofdozensofVan Gogh’sself-portraitssurrounding youintheroom.Youfeelveryclose tohimatthatpoint,”Zallersaid.

The naleincludesavirtualrealityaspectthattakesyouthroughthe Frenchcountrysidebutthroughthe lensofVanGogh’spaintingsofprovincialscenes.

“There’sarealpowerindigitalart intermsofhelpingyougetcentered andfocusedandrelievinganxiety andstress,andso,that’sit;it’sjust agreatgetawayinthatregard,”describedZaller.“We’rehappytobring VanGogh’sworkstoanewaudience inanewway,andwethinkthatthis typeofdigitalartprojectioncanintroducealotofnewaudiencestoart inverypowerfulwaysthatthey’llbe abletocarrywiththemforalong time.”

Shebelievesthatby continuouslyworking thatshecanachieveher goalsandmakeasignificantcontributiontothe school.

The2023-2024school year“wasadif cultone duetothelackofcustodians.However,mycommitmentandresponsibilityto maintaintheschoolfacilitieswasthemaindriving forcetocontinueworking everydayalongsidethe excellentteachersand staffthatcharacterizes HeritageElementary,” Chaconsaid.

Chaconjoinedthestaff atHeritagewhenshe startedworkingatMadisonCitySchoolsinMay 2020.Previously,shelived

inMiami,Fla.andworked intheareasofindustrialmaintenanceandmechanicalmaintenancefor GatmSolutionsfrom2015 to2019.

Duringhertimewith MCS,sheworkedasschool custodianatJamesClemensHighSchoolfrom2020 to2022.ShethentransferredtoHeritageandhas beenonstaffthereforthe lasttwoyears.

Chaconisoriginally fromVenezuela.ShegraduatedfromtheUniversity ofTachira–Venezuela withabachelor’sdegree inmechanicalengineering.“Ihaveexperiencein mechanicalmaintenance, industrialservice,budget managementandgeneral servicesforfuelplants,” shesaid.

Herhusband,Melvin Rojas,worksasacommunicationtechnician.Their son,GabrielRojas,isa studentatLibertyMiddle School.

Whensheisawayfrom theHeritagecampus, Chaconisadevotedfanof reading,planting owers andlisteningtomusic.

MADISON-TherewereonlytwobattlesofanysizefoughtinMadisonCounty duringtheCivilWar,andtheywereboth foughtinandaroundthetownofMadison.May17marks160yearssincethe rstofthebattleswerefoughtin1864, takingplaceintheheartofwhatisnow downtownMadison.Backthen,itwasnot morethanasimpletrainstopcalledMadisonStation.

Madison’slocationalongtherailroad halfwaybetweenHuntsvilleandDecatur wasoneoftheprimaryreasonsforits strategicimportanceatthetime.

Adrivingrainhelpedobscureadawn Confederatesurpriseattackagainstthe occupyingUnionforcesaroundtherailroaddepotinMadison.Southerntroops hadcrossedtheriveratTrianaduringthe night,takingouttheUnionsentries,and surroundedthetownonallsides.With them,theRebelshadbroughtfoursmall cannonsorhowitzers.

WhentheUnioncommandersmade theirreports(asexcusesfortheirsurpriseroutbyConfederatetroopsonMay 17,1864),theiraccountsindicatedthatthe citizensofMadisonmusthavealertedthe SoutherntroopstothepresenceandpositionsofUnionsentriesduringthenight. Thereissomedoubtaboutthelikelihood ofthatexcuseduetothedrivingrain throughoutthenightandthepoorcommunicationofthetimeforanyMadison Stationcitizenstohaveknownoftheplan andtimingofsuchanattack.

Furthermore,theUniontroopsstationedaroundandinTrianashouldhave postedsentriestowatchforrebelcrossingoftheriverthere,whichiswherethe attackforcecametothenorthernbankof theTennesseeRiverandwheretheyescapedafterwardtogobackfurthersouth. Apparently,nobodyontheUnionside wantedtoadmitthattheyhadnotbeen alertlywatchingatthattimeofthewarin themiddleofthenight,especiallyduring oneofthetorrentialrainsthatoftenhit thisareainmid-May.

Inanyevent,theUnionreportsledto thearrestofthreeprominentcitizensof thetown’sareawholivedinpositionsto knowwheresentriesalongthewayfrom Trianawouldhavebeenstationed.Of course,therewasnoevidencestatedto indicatethatthemenwhowerearrestedhadlefttheirhomesinthedarkness oftheveryearlymorningtomeetthe on-comingConfederatetroopstoprovide information. Still,excuseswereneededtoavoidconsequencesofinattentiontoduty.Therefore,DoctorRichardMatthewFletcher, wholivedimmediatelywestofthetown, wastakenprisoner,aswasJamesHarvey Pride,andattorneywholivedinthetown. Additionally,theyalsoarrestedEdward Betts,asonofplantationownerCharles Bettswhoownedlandsnorthofthe town’soldhistoricaldistrict.TheBetts plantationwaswherePublixonHughes Roadisnowlocatedandrannorthward almosttoGillespieRoadandbetween HughesRoadandBalchRoad.Since theConfederateforceshadsurrounded thetownonallsides,itisobviousthat somesoutherntroopshadatsomepoint crossedtherailroadtracksandmoved northofthehistoricaldistrictundetectedforsomedistanceandtimeduringthe

night’sdrivingrain.

Thethreearrestedcitizenswerenot likelytohavebeenoutsideduringsuch anight,astheywouldneedtobeifthey weresupposedtobeinordertomeetthe arrivingConfederateforcewithlatestinformationaboutthelocationsofsentries. Eveniftheyhadtriedtodosuchathing, theUnionsentriesshouldhavestopped themalongtheroads,consideringthat therewouldhavebeennolegitimatereasonfornighttravelinthoseconditions.

Dr.Fletcher’sdaughterOctaviaFletcherFrazierwasnotbornuntil1872,seven yearsaftertheCivilWarended,butshe hadheardthestoriesofherfather’sexperiencesformanyyearspriortohisdeath. Shewrotefromhermemorythatstories thatshehadheardoftheUnionoccupationtimeinMadison,includingthetribulationofDr.Fletcherinherbiographyof hislifeasfollows:

“IrecallvividlyofFathertellingushe enlistedwithhisbrother,myUncleSyd, inAprilof1861.FatherservedasaCaptainintheConfederateMedicalCorps. TheywereorderedlatertoManassasand werebothintheFirstBattleofBullRun, whichmanyhistoriansprefertocallthe BattleofManassas.Astherewereonlya fewolddoctorsleftinHuntsvilleandAthens,theneedforphysiciansinMadison andLimestoneCountieswassosevere thatseveralhundredcitizenssignedapetitionwhichwasforwardedtotheCommandingOf cer,urginghimtorelease andreturnFathertohishometocarefor thesickanddying.

Thiswasaccomplished,andafterhis

returnhewasnotsatis eduntilhehada substitutetoreportfordutyinhisplace. Hepaid$1700.00toaGerman-Americanto ghtatManassesandregretted deeplythatmanbeingfatallywounded intheSecondBattleofManassas.This waswherewoundedUnionsoldierswere carriedtothehospitalbyConfederate soldiersandwhereConfederatedoctors ministeredtolivinganddying--Union andConfederatealike.Thefamilyhad manylettersfromFatherwhileatManassas,andhereceivedlettersoftenfromUncleSydallduringthewar. HuntsvillewasoccupiedbytheFederalArmyunderGeneralO.M.Mitchell, whomarchedinonApril11,1862with nooppositionastherewereinHuntsville onlyafewConfederatesoldierswhowere woundedorill.GeneralMitchellandhis troopsleftHuntsvilleJuly11,1862.Ido notrememberwhowasincommandat Athens,butFathertoldusthatafterhis returnherethattherewasanepidem-

Whenhehad nallyreachedthe bottomrangeofpricing,Jessica blurtedout,”Ijusthavemoneyfor two,Iknowyoutoldmeamonth agoIneededallfourreplaced,but whichtwoaretheabsoluteworst?”

Rogerlookedperplexedandsaid, “Itwillstillbeunsafeandwithtwo smallchildren,itistoodangerous todrive.

Theyoungmothersaid,“Well,it wouldbedangerousifwedidnot haveanywheretolive,Isavedall month,cuttingbackonfood,bundlingthekidsup,andturningthe heatdownto fty.Icannotgetto workifIcan’tdrivethiscar.”

Tearsbeganto owdownher cheeksasshesaid,“Iagedoutof fostercarehavenofamilytocall on,andIhavenotseentheirdeadbeatdadintwoyears.Justputthe twotiresonandI‘llpraynothing happens.Itistwomonthsbefore thecarsafetyinspection,andI hopeIwon’thaveanyunexpected expenses”. Jasonoverheardtheconversationashewas,sittingonthecouch, readingtheBibleonhisiPad,and ithithim,eithercoincidenceordivineappointment,hehadjustread, “Itismoreblessedtogivethanreceive.”(Acts20:35)

HedidnotknowifitwasaGod thingoranangeldroppingby. Whathedidknowwassimplecommonsense,hehadalittleextraand hecouldpassitontoafellowhumanbeinginneed. PullingRogerovertotheside,Jasonsaid,“Installtheothertwotires andputitonmychargecard,add roadhazardinsurance,anddon’t tellherwhodidit.”

Ithappenedthisway--onenight aftermidnight“UncleDickMason,” myMother’strustedslave,devoted friend,andprotector,wasaroused byseveralnoisysoldiers.Whenhe inquiredwhattheywanted,oneanswered,“Wewantthatdoctor--the spy.”UncleDicktoldthem,“The doctorisupstairsinhisroom.His wifehasaweek-oldbaby.Heneeds hisrestandsleep.Idon’twantto disturbhim.”Aftermoreboisterouscomments,UncleDicktoldthem thathewouldtellthedoctorthat theywerethere--andthathewould bedown.But,overhisprotests,they brushedhimasideandrushedupstairs.UncleDick,everalert,ranup thebackstairsintoFather’sroom, adjoiningMother’s,towarnhim, andFathersteppedinthehallinhis nightshirttowelcometheenemy. UncleDickknewthattheymeant businesswhenheardtheword“spy,” sohegotFather’swatchandchain, hisbillfold,andallthechangeinhis trousers’pocketsastheymadetheir “Arrest.”

Theywouldnotlistentoreason, ortoMother’stears,orprotestsbut handcuffedFatherandledhimaway tojailinHuntsville.UncleDickhad aslimchancewhiletheywereorderingFathertoputonhisclothesto whispertohim,“Igotit.”Thenhe winkedwhenhesawFatherfeeling forhiswatchinhisvestpocket.Later,whenFatherfoundthathedid nothaveapenny,hesmiledknowinglyasherealizedthatthefaithful servanthadtakentheprecautionof removingthosethingsofvalue.

Therewerenotelephonesinthose days,soUncleDickcalledinanothertrustedandloyalservanttotake anotefromMothertoGrandfather, aboutthreemilesaway.Inthediary ofHuntsvilleresidentMrs.William DavidsonChadick(aCumberland PresbyterianMinisterwhoservedas chaplainandCaptainofthe4thAlabamaInfantry),shewroteforMay 18,1864,“TheyhavebroughtinDr. FletcherandMr.Bettstodayfrom MadisonStation,accused,itissaid, ofguidingtherebelsyesterdaytothe stationwherethecottonwasburned. Ifitisprovedonthem,theysaythat theywillhangDr.Fletcher.”

IrememberhearingFathertell ofthisexperience.Hesaidthatthe newUnionof cersawhiminthe linesoftheFederalsandthoughthe wasaspy,thoughhehadnoproof. Mr.Bettswasaneighbor,andIdo notrememberFathersayingthat hewasarrested.AlthoughGrandfather,Mr.{Charles}Betts{fatherof EdwardBetts},andallwhohadany in uenceinthetwocountiestried tohaveFatherdeclaredinnocent andreleased,hewaskeptinjailfor months.Mothervisitedhimoften, withUncleDick.

OnedayFatherhadbeenlistening totherhythmofhammers,whenin thesilenceforamoment,heheard onemanaskwhattheywerebuilding.Anothermanreplied,“We arebuildingthisscaffoldforthat Doctor,thespy--theyaregoingto hanghim.”Fathersaidhedidnot feelverycomfortablethatday,but heneverdidreallybelievethathe wouldbehanged.Aftermonthsof seeking,themessage nallygotto theformerUnionCommandingOfcer,whoknewFather.ThecommanderwasinfuriatedbyFather’s arrestandcametoHuntsville.He hadFatherreleased,andallthose whowerebilletednearAthenswere sentelsewhere.

Hegotthemsuccessfullysettled thereafterconferringwithOhio’s governor.Chadickhimselfwasborn 1817inTennessee.Atage12his familymovedtoJacksonCounty, Alabama,wherefouryearslaterhe af liatedforlifewiththeCumberlandPresbyterianChurchatMink’s CreekCampground.Byage19he begantopreachthegospel.Hevoraciouslystudiedbooksandthetechniquesoffamouspreachers,suchas RobertDonnell.Hewastoopoorto attendcollege,sohebeganhisministryasacircuitrider,preachingin northAlabamaandTennesseefor severalyears.

Chadick’s rstpastoratewasat Bellefonte,wherehealsotaught schoolforacoupleofyears.Later heservedinFayetteville,Tennessee,andWarrenton,Alabama.In 1841inBolivar,Alabama,Chadick metandmarriedMalindaDavis. Beforethewar,in1845,Chadick preachedatUnionChapelinMadisonCounty.Around1848hesucceededRobertDonnellaspastorofthe PresbyterianChurchinLebanon, Tennessee.Leavingthatpastorate aftertwoyears,hebecameeditor ofTheBannerofPeacenewspaper. Heleftthatlineofworkby1854,becominganendowmentagentofthe TheologicalDepartmentofCumberlandUniversityinLebanonandcontinuingtotravelandpreach.

WhilelivinginLebanon,Chadickmetare nedChristianwoman, MaryJaneCook,borninMassachusetts.Shebecamehissecondwife around1851andborehimfourmore children,Clara(whomarriedlawyer W.S.Gillespie)andMary(whodied inchildhood)plustwosons,George andDavid.In1856Chadickbecame pastorofthePresbyterianChurchat Huntsville.About1858whilepreachingthebaccalaureatesermonatLagrangeCollegeinAlabama,Chadick receivedthedegreeofDoctorofDivinityfromthatinstitution,atlast receivingcollegecredentials.When theCivilWarbegan,Chadickbecamechaplainofthe4thAlabama InfantryregimentandwenttoVirginia.WhenCol.EgbertJoneswas mortallywoundedatWarrenton, Virginia,Dr.Chadickaccompanied thebodybacktoHuntsville.Hereturnedtodutyandfoughtwiththe regimentintheBattleofManassas. Later,hewaspromotedtoColonelof the50thAlabamaInfantry.Healso participatedintheBattleofShiloh, sufferingstresstraumathereafter.

MaryJaneChadickkeptadetailed diaryinHuntsvillethroughoutthe CivilWar.SeeIncidentsoftheWar: TheCivilWarJournalofMaryJane ChadickbyNancyM.Rohr,published2005.AfterShiloh,Colonel ChadickwasmadeChiefofStaff toGovernorShorterofAlabama, andgivencommandoftheNorth Alabama’s“homeguard”forces.It issaidthatheraisedforthatduty the“bed-quiltregiment”whohad nouniforms.Asmoremenwere needed,ColonelChadicksearched theNorthAlabamahillstoraise them.Hebroughtintheoldandthe young,mountedonoldhorses,colts, andmules.Duetothecoldandscarcityofwarmclothing,everyrecruit broughtabed-quiltwrap--allofdifferentcolors,makingthis“bed-quilt regiment”brightlyvisibleduring thewar.

In1867,Dr.Chadickwascalledto thepastorateofachurchinMurfreesboro,Tennessee.Henextwent totheMcMinnvillePresbyterian church.From1871heservedasministeroftheFirstCumberlandPresbyterianChurchinChattanoogauntil1877.InSeptember,1878,whenit becamecleartohimthattheendwas nearafterayearofillness,hesaid oneeveningtohiswife,“Watchwith metonight.Iamgoingtochangemy habitation.”“Whereareyougoing?” askedhiswife.“Iamgoingtorest-torestinthearmsofJesus.”Inthe morning,hewastrulyatrest.He wasburiedinMcMinnville.
