MADISON–MadisonCity Schoolsismovingforwardon buildingitseighthelementary schooltoserveitsrapidlygrowingenrollment,nowstanding atalmost13,000studentsbut expectedtogrowto15,000inthe nextsixyears.Thenewschool willbeabletoaccommodateanother1,000students.
TheBoardofEducation heldaspecialcalledmeeting lastWednesdayandapproved a$49.2millioncontractwith PearceConstructionofHuntsville.
AccordingtoMadisonCity Schools,theschoolwillbebuilt onMSC-ownedpropertyin
LimestoneCountywestofthe newroundaboutonHardiman Road,whichwillhelpeasetrafcintheareaoncetheschool andnearbysubdivisionare builtandopen.Theschoolwill accommodatethegrowthin westandsouthMadisonbutespeciallyinLimestoneCounty, fromwhich,currently,27%of theschooldistrictcomes.
“We’vebeengrowingonthe LimestoneCountyMadison sideforseveralyears,”said Nichols.“Thiswillhelpusto spreadouttheovercrowdingof ourelementaryschools.”
ItwillbeMadisonCity SchoolDistrict’ssecondschool inLimestoneCounty.
Thenewschoolwillkeep uptheexcellencetheMadison
CitySchoolDistricthascome tobeknownforwithplansfor dedicatedart,STEM,music, andspecialeducationfacilities. Thoseprogramsthathavebeen addedtootherdistrictschools arecontributingtotheneedfor morespaceinMadisonschools.
“Wenowhavefulltimemusic. Wehavefulltimeart.Wehave afulltimeSTEMteacher.So, theprogrammaticthingsthat we’veaddedhavebeenachallengeforus,forspace,”said Nichols.
Anameforthenewschool hasnotyetbeenselectedyet, butasurveywillbesentoutto parentsandstudentstohavea sayinthename.Theschoolis expectedtowelcomeits rst studentsinthefallon2026.
ArtistrenditionofthenewelementaryschoolplannedforMadisonCitySchools.Thenewschoolwillbeon thewestsideofLimestoneCountyontheformerHalseyFarmpropertyoffHardimanRoadandSegersRoad. InDecemberof2021,theMadisonCityCouncilannexedthepropertyintheneighboringcountywiththe intentionofaddingresidentialareasandthenewschooltotheland.

savingalifewhilemedicalinterventionsarebeingperformed.To qualifyforthisaward,apatient mustsurviveandbedischarged fromthehospital,”explainedFire ChiefBailey.
Theteamrespondedtoacall fromMadisonHospitalforthe transferofacardiacpatientin criticalconditiontoHuntsville Hospital.Whileintheambulance, thepatientwentintocardiacarrest,andtheteamjumpedinto action.CaptainRichardsonperformedCPRandBlankenship placedthepatientonamonitor andadministeredshockandmedicationwhileEboerlewasatthe wheeloftheambulance. Thepatientregainedapulseon thewaytoHuntsvilleHospitaland waslaterdischargedwithnodecits.Hewasintheaudienceatthe citycouncilmeetingforthepresentationoftheawardstothe rst responderswhosavedhislife.
Eboerlewasabsentforthepresentation,butRichardsonand Blankenshipwerepresentedwith theawardsatthecouncilmeeting.
“[We’d]justliketocongratulate bothofthesefortheircontinued effortsinprotectingallofourpeople,”ChiefBaileysaid.“Ijustwant toagainreallytoutonthesuccess ofourEMSdeliverysystemwhen youtalkaboutthecombinationof HEMSIalongwithMadisonFire. Idon’tthinkyou’regoingto nd anythingbetterinthisarea.”

TwentyyearoldPrivateJ.D.Luna, asalesclerkinHuntsvillepriorto thewar,volunteeredtobeaparatrooperandjumpedintoNormandy withtheU.S.Army’s101stAirborne DivisionintheearlyhoursofJune 6,1944.
Twenty-sevenyearoldSergeant CharlieW.Grayson,whohadbeen aconstructionworkerforthegovernmentinNewHope,servedinan anti-tankcompanyintheU.S.Army 4thInfantryDivision,whichwasin the rstwavetogoashoreatUtah Beachlaterthatmorning.Bothof theseyoungmenwerekilledinactionthatday,andthereareseveral otherlocalswhotookpartinD-Day andwerekilledinthedaysthatfollowedtheinitiallandings.

The502nddepartedtheStates aboardatransportshipon4September1943boundforEngland,where theycontinuedtheirrigoroustraininginpreparationfortheinvasion ofEurope.Trainingregularlyconsistedofparachutedrops,15–25mile hikes,closecombatexercises,andinstructionson rstaid,mapreading, chemicalwarfare,anddemolitions. CharlieWilburnGraysonwas bornAugust31,1916inNewHope, MadisonCounty,Alabama.HisparentsAlonzaOdellGrayson,afarmer,andLillyB.(King)Graysonwere alsoborninAlabama.Charliewas oneofeightchildrenborntothe couple,havingoneolderbrother,one oldersister,threeyoungerbrothers, andtwoyoungersisters.In1920and 1930,thefamilywaslivingonafarm inNewHopewhereCharlieattendedlocalschools.Hedroppedoutof schoolaftertheseventhgrade,likely tohelpoutonthefamilyfarm.Sadly,Charlie’sfatherpassedawayin 1936,andin1940Charliewasliving athomewithhiswidowedmother andworkinginconstructionforthe government.
CharlieenlistedintheUSArmyin June1940andservedinthe8thInfantryRegimentofthe4thInfantry Division.The4thDivisionwasbased

CharliemarriedtheformerGarner BeatriceClarkon17August1942in MadisonCounty,Alabama.
ThedivisionmovedinApril1943 toFortDix,NewJersey,whereit wasagainrecon guredandwasredesignatedthe4thInfantryDivision on4Augustofthatyear.The4thInfantryDivisionsailedtoEnglandin January1944,andspentthenextfew monthstrainingfortheplannedinvasionofEurope.
OnD-Day,6June1944,the4th IDwasinthespearheadoftheamphibiouslandingsatUtahBeachin Normandy,France.Thedivision’s 8thInfantryRegiment,inwhichSgt. Graysonwasamemberofananti-tankcompany,hadthedistinction ofbeingthe rstAlliedunittohitthe beachatNormandy.UnlikethesituationatOmahabeachdepictedin themovie“SavingPrivateRyan”,the landingatUtahBeachwasrelatively bloodlessasthe4thIDlanded21,000 troopsatthecostofonly197casualties.InJuly1944,Sgt.Grayson’s wifereceivedwordfromtheWarDepartmentthatherhusbandhadbeen missinginactionsinceJune6.Two monthslatershereceivedthetragic newsthatherhusbandhadinfact beenkilledinactiononD-Day. Fourminutesbeforethestart time,everyphonebegantoalarm. ItwasanEmergencyAlertfromthe NationalWeatherService.Atornadowarninghadbeenissued.PastorSteveAyerscalmlysteppedto thestage.(Thiswasnothis rstrodeo.)Heinstructedusthattheservicewouldbemovingtothechurch basement.Whenbuilt,theymade sureitwouldbeasafeplace-ableto withstand300mphwinds.
Mysisterandherhusbandareon thegreetingteam.Theyassisted youngandoldastheytookshelter. Nooneseemedtobealarmed.This wasthelandwheretornadoesarea partoflife.Takingshelterwasnot foreigntothem.Wearefromthe landwhere oodingisapartoflife. Itisnotuncommonforservicesto bemovedorchangedduetorising water.

IrvinewrotethatColonelJohnBurtwelland150menofthe4thAlabama CavalrywereencampedalongIndian CreekneartherailroadbridgeonDecember20.Theyhadbeenpositioned thereinanattempttokeeptheUnion forcesbottledupinHuntsvilleinorder tocoverGeneralJohnBellHood’sretreattogetbackacrosstheTennessee RiverintoTuscumbiafromFranklin, Tennesseeafterhisdecisivedefeatthere followinghisequallydisastrousdefeatat Nashville.ColonelBurtwellhadordered thatfencerailsbeburnedontherailroad bridgeonDecember22,realizingthat theUnionforcescouldreachtheConfederatepositionfromHuntsvillebyhorse andbyrailwithin15minutes.Therebels couldhearheavycannonadingatDecaturtotheirrearandnumerouswhistles inHuntsvilleattherailroaddepot.They knewthatalargeUnioncavalryforce hadre-occupiedHuntsvilleinthelast fewdaysandwasbeingreinforcedwith infantry.Col.Burtwellwasawaiting Confederatereinforcementsthatwere overdueforunknownreasons,andall scoutsthattheysentouttoeithereast orwesthadfailedtoreturn.Themen wereallexhaustedfromcontinuousduty guardingmanyroads,andspiritswere lowastheweatherwasextremelycold. DuringthenightofDecember23,accordingtotheof cialUnionrecords andIrvine’sdiaryreport,aNegroman lefttheConfederatecampandreported totheUnionforcesinHuntsvillethat therebelswereabouttoattack,which wasactuallynottrue.UnionColonel W.F.Prosserofthe12thIndianaCavalrythoughtthattherewasabrigade ofrebelforcesgatheredatthecreek,so hedecidedtoinitiateasurpriseattack. Heordered300menofhisowncavalry topreparetomoveoutfromHuntsville at3o’clockinthemorning.TheUnion forceunderCol.Prosserwasaugmented bypartsof10th,11th,and13thIndiana Cavalry,aswellasthe2ndand3rdTennessee(Union)Cavalry.Theyarrivedat IndianCreek“sixmileswestofHuntsville”atdawnonthe23rd.Ofcourse, theaccountsoftheengagementoften usedifferentnamesforthe owofwaterthatwenowknowasIndianCreek. ManyUnionaccountscalledourIndian CreekasHurricaneForkatthattime. TheynormallyusedthenameIndian Creektorefertothe owofwaterfrom thebottomofthebluffinHuntsville’s SpringBranchofIndianCreek.Other UnionaccountscallourIndianCreekas Six-MileCreek,duetothedistancefrom oldHuntsvilletownlimits.Evenolder accounts,priortothewar,calledtoday’s IndianCreekasPrice’sFork.Withallof thenameconfusion,itisawonderthat anyoneeverendedupgoingtotheintendedpointsofengagements. AsdescribedinmostUnionaccounts, themorningofthe“engagement”was excessivelycoldandpiercing,while theroadswerefrozenhard.Eventhe creekitselfwasfrozen,aswastheboggy groundaroundit.Movingatafasttrot, ColonelProsserturnedtoGeorgeHouse, theUnionbugler,andcommandedhim toblowthecharge.Simultaneously,he spurredhishorseforward.However,the bugledidnotsound,soCol.Prosseragain turnedaroundonhishorseandsworeat Georgefornotblowingthecharge,demandingtoknowwhynot.Househad thebugletohislips,andrepliedfromthe sideofhismouthasbesthecouldthathe wouldblowitassoonashislipsthawed outthemetal.Ithadfrozentohislips,
preventinghimfromblowing.
Thefordofthecreekwherethecharge occurredwasnarrow,allowingonly fourhorsesabreasttocross,according toUniondocuments.Onthewestside ofthecreek,therewasalevelplateau whichwashalfcircledbyaridgecontainingtherebelposition.FromCaptain Irvine’sConfederateaccount,heand ColonelBurtwellhadarisenbeforethe earlydawnattack.Theyrodedownthe hilltothestill-sleepingsoldiers’camp whileeverythingwasstillquiet.Further hestated,“Wethenrodetothebridge, whichwasaboutaquartermileoff,and wesawthatitwasthoroughlydestroyed bythe rethatourtroopshadsetthe daybefore.”Theyhadjustreturnedto thecamponthebluffsofthewestbank whentheyheard ringaboutamileor twoawayinthedirectionofHuntsville. Irvinesaidthathethen“rodetothe‘Y’ inthecreek,wherethepointoftheattacksoonoccurred.”(Theonlyplaceof suchasplitofthecreek’s ownearthe railroadbridgeissouthoftheOldMadisonPikebridgetoday.ThatPikeisthe oldroadfromHuntsvilletoMadisonStation,butthenitwasverynarrow,even forhorses,withdenseforestsoneach side.Fromthesedetailsandothersgiven inthevariousreports,itcanbededuced thatthecon ictbeganalongthecreekin thesouthernportionofMadisonAcademycampusalongSlaughterRoad.)The engagementwasacompleteroutofthe still-sleepingrebelcavalrymen,butvery fewwerekilled.However,manywere woundedandabout60werecaptured duringtheir ightbacktowardMadisonStationandfromtheretotheTriana crossingovertheriver.
CaptainIrvinewassooncaptured duringtheengagementatIndianCreek, aboutamileorsoeastofthetownof MadisonStation.Afterhiscapturehe wasinitiallyheldbytheUnionforcesfor ashorttimeinHuntsville,thensentto FortDelaware(onanislandintheDelawareRiverabout40milesbelowPhiladelphia)fortherestofthewar,which lastedonlyaboutfouror vemore months.Whileimprisonedhewasallowedtokeepadiary,writingofhiswar experiencesandincludingdetailsofthe eventofhiscapture.Anabbreviatedexcerptofhis rst-personaccountfollows. Atthebeginningofthedawncharge acrossthecreekbymorethan300Union cavalrymen,Irvinenoted“someconfusionintheranks”ofthe150bivouacked Confederatecavalrymen.“Igallopedtowardthemtoseewhatwasthematter, whentomyutterastonishmenttheywavered,broke,andawaytheywent,most afoot,withouttheirhorses,helter-skelteruptheroad(today’sOldMadison Pike).IsawtheBlueCoatsacrossthe creek,sabersinhand,slashingandcuttingatagreatrate.”Irvinewrotethat astheConfederatetroops ed,he“could donothingwiththem,atleastnothing butchecktheirspeed.Thiswasagreat disadvantagetothoseintherear,forbeingatthistimeonaveryroughandnarrow,heavilyforestedroad(OldMadison Pike),theycouldnotscatter.Bythosein frontridingataslowgallop,therearwas forcedtodothesame.Theirgunsbeing allunloaded(afterhaving redaninitial volley),theycouldnotloadagainwhile runningorriding.However,themountedYankeescouldstopandreload,then easilyovertakethemostlyafoot eeing Confederatecolumnand reintothe massattheirleisuretopickoffsuchmen ascouldnotkeepuporwhosehorsesfell --asagreatmanydid.”
“Iwasatthistimeintherear(ofthe eeingConfederatetroops).Iglanced aroundandsawthateverymountedman thatthey(theUniontroops)overtook wasknockedimmediatelyoffhishorse, whiletheenemywerepressingcloseon us, ringpistols.Therewasnownot morethanthreeofourmenbehindme, andIknewthatmytimewouldsoon comeunlessIdidsomething.Putting spurstomymare,IrodeuptoTomWilliams,whowasthenextmaninfrontof me,andtoldhimthatitwasfollytoremainthereanylonger.Themencould notbeturnedbackto ght,andIthought itwastimeforustotakecareofourselves.ItoldhimthatIintendedtoleave theroadandtaketothewoods.Hesaid thathewouldfollow.”
“Ilookedaroundtoseewhatwerethe chanceswhenthePhilistineswereupon me.Twopistolswerepresentedatmy head,andabigfellowwithasaber(was) justcominginreach.Thethingwas out.Icouldhaveshotone,butitwould havebeencertaindeathtome.Taking prudencetobethebetterpartofvalor,I drewupmymareandquietlytoldthem thatIsurrendered,atthesametime
holdingoutmypistoltooneofthem. Thecowardwiththesaberstruckme,as Ithought,rightacrosstheeyes,stunning meforaminute.I,however,heldonto myhorse,anduponrecoveringmysensesfoundthatIwasworthtwodeadmen yet.Hehad(cut)myheadopenalength ofthreeinchesrightdownthepartof myhair,butwithoutinjuringtheskull. Mymouthandeyeswerefullofblood, andthecapeofmyovercoatadeepred. PoorTom,Iafterwardheard,waskilled directlyafter.Ihavenodoubt(thatTom) wasmurderedaftersurrendering.Iwas senttotheUnionrearunderguard,one ofwhomtookmymareandanothermy hat.Theyalsotookmysaddlebagsand blankets,leavingmeinabad x.”(Itwas anexceedinglycoldday,withthecreek frozenover.)“Themen,althoughheretoforegoodsoldiers,werepanic-stricken.Intheirhurry(they)ranorrode overeachothermercilesslyandpaidno attentionwhatevertothecommandsof theirof cers.”
Afterthewar,inadditiontotheof cial records,MajorWillA.McTeerwrotehis autobiographytodescribe“TheBattle atIndianCreekFord”asherecalledit fromtheUnionside.Regardingthecold weather,hewrote,“My ngerswereso coldIfoundtheywerenumb,soIcould notusethepistols,andhadtokeephold ofthereinsandplacemyhandsunder mythighstogetthemwarmed.CominguptothebankatthefordofIndian Creek,wefoundthattheenemyhadtakenpositioninaremarkablystrongplace. Theyhadasweeping reovertheford, whichwastheonlyplacethatwecould cross(becausethewaterwasmuchdeeperthenthanitisnow,duetoadropping
watertablebroughtaboutbyindustrializationandpopulationdensity).Aswe descendedintothewater,weexpected ashowerofbullets,buttherewereonly afewthatstruckaroundus.MajorWilliamson,commandingthe10thIndiana, wasanoldinfantrysolder,andcrossing thestreamhebegantheformationofa linetomakeastand,butthe2ndTennesseeCavalrycamedashingbywithsabers drawn,screamingandyelling,“Letthe 2ndatthem!”Assoonasthe2ndpassed bythem,theIndianiansfellinwiththem sweepingupintotheranksoftheConfederates.Thegreaterpartoftheenemy cameoutonfoot,asiftheywereinfantry, butourmenwentintothemwithsabers andsoonbrokeandstampededthem. Weneverknewhowmanyoftheenemy werekilled,butdoknowthattherewere several.Wetook54prisonersbackto Huntsville,andthegreaternumberhad saberwounds.” Andagain,thevariousUnionaccounts statemanydifferentnumbersofthe forcesinvolvedoneachsideorthekilled andwoundedandprisonerstaken,soit isimpossibletogetanaccurateaccount ofthe nalstatistics.However,itisinterestingthatoneoftheUnionsoldiers ofthisengagementwhowaswounded andyearslaterdiedofinfectionofthe bullet-tornareawasidenti edasLt.SydneyA.Prosser,whomayhavebeenason ofUnioncommanderCol.W.F.Prosser.Also,ofthetwosigni cantengagementsofthewarinMadisonCounty, bothoccurredintheareaofthetownof Madison--withonelopsidedvictoryfor theConfederatesandonefortheUnion forces,soitwassomewhatofa“draw”in thathorriblewarfareinourlocalarea.
