WELCOME TO MAYVILLE

It’s an honor to welcome you to our charming city nestled along the banks of the Rock River. Having recently celebrated its 175th anniversary, Mayville offers a breadth of attractions and year-round events that reflect our proud history and way of life.

Come see and appreciate the quaintness and charm of Mayville’s Main Street, lined with a variety of shops, restaurants, and beverage establishments for you to explore. During the Summer months, Mayville opens a block alongside Main Street with tables and a stage, often hosting live music events for the public’s enjoyment.

We have great schools, excellent public safety and services that you would expect to only find in a larger city, a variety of local retailers, grocers, gas stations, hotels and we are soon opening a new state-of-the-art library. If you are into fitness, our 57,000 square foot aquatics and fitness facility known as the TAG Center offers many amenities for you to try.

Mayville is a year-round outdoor paradise that offers over 200 acres of parks with amenities such a disc-golf course as well as kayaks for the public to enjoy. We have golf in Mayville and several courses nearby. Our Riverwalk is accessible year-round and connects with miles of paths and quiet country roads for you to explore. The neighboring Horicon Marsh is the largest freshwater marsh in the US offering incredible birdwatching and expansive views whether you are hiking or visiting one of its Visitor Centers nearby. There are numerous public access hunting spots for you to try as well.

A center of industry, our housing is affordable, and our workforce is talented. We’re just an hour away from three international airports, making it very easy to travel to and from Mayville for work or vacation.

Simply put, Mayville is a fantastic city in which to live, work or play.

GOLD STAR MEMORIAL TRAIL

Phase one of the Gold Star Memorial Trail (GTMT) is a non-motorized trail can be used by the public year-round for running, walking, hiking, biking, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. The 10-foot-wide 2.1-mile paved trail starts in Mayville’s Theiler Park off Hwy TW and is mainly located along Hwy 28 to the Horicon Marsh Education and Visitors Center.

The GSMT is dedicated to all Wisconsin military members who gave their lives for their country. The original concept of the trail was to be built in memory of two soldiers from Mayville, one from Horicon, and three from Beaver Dam..

The ultimate concept of the GSMT is to connect the City of Mayville to the City of Beaver Dam through additional phases of the project. Currently, the Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center trails do not permit bike riding. However, walking a bike on the southern Bachhuber Trail through the Horicon Marsh will get bikers to Palmatory Point, which

Trail Bikes can be rented at True Value Home and Hardware at 1020 Horicon St., Mayville.

then connects to the City of Horicon GSMT route (phase 4). This route is marked with signs and goes from Palmatory Point on city streets to the west side of Horicon to Whitty Park, which will serve as the connection point for the next phase of the project from the City of Horicon to the City of Beaver Dam.

by Ted Bachhuber and was dedicated in his memory. Ted passed away March 3, 1997. In 2007, following a fund-raiser the museum replaced the plywood surrounding the cupola due to rotting wood. For a period of time after the school closed in 1981, the Mayville Chamber of Commerce had their office located in the building. In March of 1982, the White Limestone School Restoration Corporation was formed. The Articles of Incorporation were signed by George Walk, president: Thomas Zuelsdorf, vicepresident; Mary Ann Treichel, secretary, and Evaline Boeck, treasurer. In February of 2000, the name was officially changed to the “Mayville Limestone School Museum, Inc.”

In 1857-1858, after almost ten years of existence in a small frame schoolhouse, the people of Mayville decided to build a larger school to accommodate a growing population. A stone structure forty by sixty feet was erected, which was at that time one of the finest school buildings in the state. White limestone used for the school building came from local area stone quarries. Edward J. Foster, Ernst A. Muzzy, R.S. Chapman, and Miss Adra Reynolds were the first teachers in the new building.

In 1876, because of the growing population due to the success of the local iron smelting industry, a seventyfoot addition, nearly identical in design to the original building, was added on the south end. Local mason Friedrich Fischer, was the master builder. A new pillared portico and cupola gave it a grand statehouse appearance. The original school bell, donated by T. Sherin in 1857, was moved to the new tower and rang out for many years. This bell is now on display inside the building. In 1890, the school board decided to add steam heat to the school building. In 1937, as part of a WPA project, the area beneath the school was excavated for a full basement with two large rooms and indoor toilets.

Mayville’s “White Limestone School” building was used as a public school for 121 years, from 1857-1964 and 1967-1981. From 1880-1898, the school served as both the grammar school and high school. The first high school principal was J. M. Turner. In 1883, after a three-year course of study, Emma Garling, Addie Williams, and Rudolph Sauerhering were the first graduates.

In 1968, due to some deterioration, the cupola was removed from the building. In 1997, 29 years later, a replica of the original 35 foot tall cupola was restored to the building. This restoration project was financed

The Limestone School Building has been listed on the National Registry of Historic Places since 1976. In 2007, the museum proudly celebrated the 150th birthday of the building.

CARRIAGE FACTORY MUSEUM

1 North German Street, Mayville, WI 53050 920-387-2420 • mayvillehistorical@gmail.com www.mayvillehistoricalsociety.org

Free Admission

Open 2nd and 4th Sundays each month May - October from 1:30pm - 4:30pm

The museum of the Mayville Historical Society occupies what once was the home and workplace of John Hollenstein and family. Hollenstein came to the Mayville area in 1873, where they worked a small farm. Hollenstein started making wagons and carriages with blacksmith William Albrecht in a building on North Main Street. Today, the Hollenstein House contains antique furnishings, clothing and pictures plus special exhibits, including vintage clothing and historic infants’ and children’s parapernalia.

Hollenstein set up his own wagon and carriage business, erecting a factory east of his home. He operated his shop until 1908, and then sold it to his son, John Hollenstein Jr., who continued the business until 1941. Anton Jagow purchased the factory building in 1945. He made and repaired farm wagons, built wooden truck bodies, wooden folding chairs and other items. Algot Streed bought the building in 1953 and ran the tool and die operation there until 1967. Then James Gilboy purchased the facility but never occupied it. Ted and Grace Bachhuber donated funds to enable the Mayville Historical Society to buy the building.

The Hollenstein Carriage Factory consists of the main wagon factory with attached farm shop and house. The two buildings to the north are the Firehouse and the Brunke Cigar factory. Both were moved to the museum grounds in 1978.

The museum displays several wagons, carriages and sleighs made in the factory; in addition to these, we have an old bank interior (Knowles), military displays, a mounted eagle that Harley Davidson photographed for some of their advertising, printing press equipment, a dentist’s office, and a lot of Mayville marked items from yesteryear. We also have many pictures and maps showing the early history of Mayville.

HORICON MARSH EXPLORIUM

Guests will have a unique opportunity to travel through time as they explore some of the exciting new features on display at the Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center in Horicon, Wisconsin. Long before Horicon Marsh achieved international status as an important bird and wildlife area and a destination for outdoor recreation, glaciers carved a basin where a wetland would one day form. Today, guests of Horicon Marsh’s Explorium can get a glimpse of life at Horicon Marsh thousands of years before European settlement and witness how the current wetland came to be. The experience is narrated by a Clovis point arrowhead, that keeps visitors company throughout the journey as they view, listen to, touch, and even smell exhibits that document the changes to the marsh over time.

Videos and interactive displays greet guests at every turn, encouraging audiences of any age to learn more about the history and ecology of Horicon Marsh. A wooly mammoth replica that children are free to touch and climb represents wildlife that roamed the land during the Ice Age and also served as an important food source for early Native Americans. Relics from the age of European settlement as well

as modern hunting and trapping equipment illustrate the marsh’s popularity as a waterfowl hunting site.

Games encourage visitors to learn about wildlife identification. Viewers can also gain a singularly thrilling perspective on the management and conservation activities currently occurring on the marsh before heading out to enjoy it for themselves.

MAYVILLE PUBLIC LIBRARY

The Mayville Public Library is soon to become the Ted and Grace Bachhuber Memorial Library, and it will be located at 234 N John St. When it opens its doors in the fall of 2023, the community will have access to all the abundant beautiful spaces it will provide. With a community living room, four study rooms, a large and small conference room, an activity room, two large event spaces, and a dedicated teen space, this new facility will offer something for all.

The library in Mayville is a member of the Monarch Library System, which includes 32 libraries in Dodge, Ozaukee, Sheboygan, and Washington counties. Through the library, cardholders have access to a myriad of physical and digital resources.

In 1904, Miss Lutie Stearns of the Wisconsin Free Library Commission addressed a meeting to share her conviction that Mayville should have a public library. That very evening, a Library Association was formed, a constitution was adopted, and officers were selected. The library opened on November 9, 1904, with 250 books, supplemented by 50 German and English books delivered by the Traveling Library every month. Etta Barott was the first librarian, who, for $5.00 a month, presided over the small library, which was housed in one room over the former State Bank of Mayville.

Just 7 months later, the number of books in the library had more than doubled, and by November 1905, the library moved to a larger room on the ground floor of the building at 4 S Main St. Since then, the library has been housed at 130 S Main St, 11 N School St, in the Joe Bachhuber Building at 44 N Main St, and temporarily at the old bank building on the corner of Bridge St and Main St. On February 18, 1968, the library moved to 111 N Main St, where it has stood for 55 years. In 2023, residents will be able to enjoy the resources, services, programs, and spaces at the new facility at 234 N John St.

Libraries have changed over the years to match the times. Today, besides print materials, our patrons have access to over 60 databases, video games, kits, our library of things, and thousands of digital books, movies, and magazines. They can achieve personal growth by taking any of over 600 online classes (many with CE credits) through Universal Classes. They can learn new crafts through Creative Bug or investigate their heritage through Genealogy.com Library Edition and Family Search Affiliate access. Community members can enjoy new experiences and meet people through our monthly programming and special events or by borrowing one of our passes to nearby attractions.

“The Open Door Coffeehouse is the home away from home for local residents and those visiting. Its passion is to feature local brands and give back to the community Its warm smells, friendly baristas, and welcoming environment hold a sophisticated-rustic feel, while holding a cup of delicious comfort in your hands.

The comfort in your hands is Luna Coffee, a local roaster that is fair trade, with organic options. In their newly renovated location, you’ll find fresh pastries, local treasures, a toddler space, kid’s activities, and a cozy space to enjoy.

Enjoy a day in downtown Mayville, exploring the unique shops, eating at one of the impressive restaurants, walking along the river and ending your walk with and espresso (or non-coffee drink) at The Open Door”.
