Area RUSTIC ROADS
W
isconsin is home to many of the most colorful fall routes to travel in the country. Combine the beauty of the fall countryside with Wisconsin’s Rustic Roads, and fall driving takes on a whole new meaning. The purpose of the Rustic Road program is to identify and preserve in a natural and essentially undisturbed condition certain designated roads having unusual or outstanding natural beauty, by virtue of native vegetation along with natural or man-made features associated with the road. All the routes, with maps and descriptions, are available at: www.dot.wisconsin.gov/travel/scenic/maps.htm Columbia County, Marquette County, Sauk County, and Adams County are home to a few of these scenic and historic drives, and are just off the main roads you already take to visit many of the businesses in this magazine.
ADAMS COUNTY R14
Location: Adams County. Ember Drive between County A and County B. Length: 2 Miles Surface: Gravel This thickly forested area supports a multitude of wildlife and wildflowers. The road winds up through a cleft on top of a bluff. A natural spring runs from the top of the bluff down the side of the road to the east.
R50
Location: Adams County. Cottonville Avenue (Old State Road), from 8th Avenue east to 4th Avenue. Length: 4.6 Miles Surface: Unpaved The locals call Cottonville Avenue “Old State Road” because it

was laid out by the state, probably in the 1800s. Vistas along this road include native lowland and upland trees, shrubbery and marshes. Wild birds, deer and grouse abound.
COLUMBIA COUNTY R49
Location: Sauk and Columbia counties. Levee Road, beginning at County T in Sauk County east to WIS 33 in Columbia County.
Surface: Paved R-110 meanders through prime agricultural land interspersed with ponds and small lakes, marshland and rolling hills covered in trees. Wildlife abounds through the route. Outstanding fall foliage makes R-110 a very good tour route.
MARQUETTE COUNTY R104
Length: 9.8 Miles
Location: Marquette and Columbia Counties. 14th Road and Barry Avenue between County O and County CM.
Surface: Paved
Length: 2.8 Miles
Levee Road travels through the Aldo Leopold Reserve along the Wisconsin River. Motorists, bikers and hikers can see prairie grasses, wildlife, trees and marsh along the river’s south shore.
Surface: Paved
R69
Location: Columbia County. Old Agency House Road, from Albert Street to the north end near the Old Indian Agency House. Length: .75 Miles Surface: Paved R-69 travels along the historic Portage Canal. On one side of the road, wetland habitat harbors Sandhill cranes, Great Blue herons and many other birds. The road leads to the historic Indian Agency House. Built in 1832, the house is open to the public. The northeast end of the road connects with the Marquette Trail where you can see the remnants of the Old Fort Winnebago Locks. The locks and canal joined the Fox and Wisconsin Rivers, making travel by water possible from Green Bay to the Gulf of Mexico.
R104
Location: Marquette and Columbia Counties. 14th Road and Barry Avenue between County O and County CM. Length: 2.8 Miles Surface: Paved This road passes over hills and valleys closely bordered by mixed hardwood forests and large cottonwood trees. Picturesque, century-old farms can be seen from several locations. The French Creek Wildlife Area and John Muir State Natural Area are nearby. There are remnant prairie patches and abundant wildlife along R-104.
R110
Location: Columbia County. Portions of O’Connor, Van Ness and Chrislaw roads between WIS 60 and WIS 113. Length: 5.9 Miles

SAUK COUNTY R21
Location: Sauk County. Just off County PF, follows portions of Schara Road, Ruff Road, Orchard Drive and Slotty Road. Length: 8.6 Miles Surface: Gravel Ruff Road, Orchard Drive and Slotty Road are narrow, gravel roads. They wind through rolling rugged terrain near Natural Bridge State Park. The park is the location of the Raddatz rock shelter, the oldest documented site of primitive man in the upper Midwest. Schara Road extends along a ridge bordered by oaks, maples, basswoods and hickories. Remains of an old barn and home foundation are visible from the road. A walk during the spring and summer reveals many wildflowers along the roadside and in the open fields.

Welcome to HISTORIC PORTAGE T
he Portage Area Chamber of Commerce welcomes you to Historic Portage. Portage is a wonderful place to grow your business, raise your family or just visit. The area offers small town charm with residential neighborhoods and growing commercial and industrial business sites, next to the beautiful Wisconsin and Fox Rivers. Our strong historical heritage offers an excellent environment in which to live and work. We are certainly eager
to share this rich history with all who pass through. The historical distinction of Portage lies in its unique geographical location between the Fox and Wisconsin Rivers. Here, the two rivers, one flowing north to the St. Lawrence, the other south to the Mississippi, are separated by a narrow neck of land over which, for two centuries, adventurers and settlers traveling the waterway had to portage their canoes and

Apple and PUMPKIN PICKING TIPS A
lthough scores of people cite summer as their favorite time of year, autumn also is a beloved season. Cool breezes and crisp air seem tailor-made for afternoons spent enjoying the great outdoors. The pleasant autumn weather and aweinspiring foliage may be the reason so many festivals and outdoor events are scheduled this time of year. Apple- and pumpkin-picking are popular fall pastimes. Neighborhood orchards open their doors to the public, allowing men, women and children to scour their fields and trees for the perfect finds. Heed these picking tips to make the experience even more of a success.
Apples
Many orchards that have open picking seasons plant dwarf apple trees to make the picking process easier, particularly for young children, so there’s no need to bring along a ladder. You should still be able to find plenty of apples close to the ground. A good farmer will know when certain varieties of apples are ripe, and he or she will likely cordon off trees that are not ready for picking. Ripe apples will be crisp and firm. Keep in mind that apples ripen from the outside of the tree inward. Those are the ones usually picked first, anyway. Try to get to an orchard earlier
in the season. If you wait too long, the trees may be picked of most of the best fruit. Depending on where you live, apple-picking season may begin in mid-September and continue into mid-October. Apples can bruise, so don’t toss them into baskets when picking. Also, wait to wash apples until right before eating to prevent moisture-related spoilage. Apples keep best in a cool location.
Pumpkins
Pumpkin patches are often found in close proximity to apple orchards. Picking pumpkins to eat or decorate the home is a popular autumn activity, one that families often enjoy together. When visiting a pumpkin patch, dress accordingly. That means wearing shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty, as the patch may be muddy. Layer clothing in case it is a chilly day. Breezes are more pronounced in open fields. Pumpkins are “long-keepers,” which means if they are uncut or not damaged, they can last for several weeks. This means you can pick pumpkins at the same time as apples. When selecting a pumpkin, look for one that is completely orange. After picking, a green or yellow pumpkin may never ripen to orange. Bring along a small wagon and knife so that you can cut the vine, if necessary. Pumpkins
are heavy, and a wagon will come in handy, especially with youngsters in tow. Ripe pumpkins should not dent easily. Examine your pumpkin for holes or insects, which could indicate internal rot that greatly reduces the shelf life of the pumpkin. Remember, carving the pumpkin reduces its life expectancy, so be sure to reserve that task until close to Halloween. If you desire a pumpkin to turn into a baked treat or other dish,
you will need a type of small, sweet cooking pumpkin known as a “sugar pumpkin.” The meat of this pumpkin is much less stringy and more smooth than decorative pumpkin varieties. Autumn is the season for apple- and pumpkin-picking. This is a great way to spend an afternoon outdoors with the family. If possible, visit an orchard on a weekday, when the crowds will be much smaller than during prime fall weekends.

COLLEGE GOAL WISCONSIN AT
• Apples are one of the most widely-grown tree fruits and become available for picking in early fall. They can be put to use in all different types of food applications - from desserts to sauces to beverages. As a stand-alone snack, apples are a healthy source of antioxidants and fiber. Apples have many other qualities and an interesting history. Consider these facts about apples. • Apples are believed to have originated somewhere between the Caspian and Black Seas, but now they are grown all over the world. • The main producers of apples in the United States include the states of Washington, New York, Michigan, Pennsylvania, California, and Virginia. • There are thousands of different apple varieties. • Apples were taken to North America by European settlers. • Honeybees are a popular pollinator of apple trees. • Apple seeds contain a small amount of cyanide
compound. They’re not harmful if eaten in small quantities. • Many apple harvests are still picked by hand. • Fifteen types of apples account for 90 percent of total production. Red Delicious, Gala, Golden Delicious, Granny Smith, and Fuji lead the way. • A bushel of apples weighs 42 pounds while a peck weighs approximately 10.5 pounds. • The crabapple is the only apple native to North America. • Apple trees won’t bear their first fruits until they have matured four to five years. • The largest apple picked weighed three pounds. • Apples are good Halloween bounty to receive in lieu of candy. The nutritional benefits of apples spurred the saying, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” • It’s fun to go apple-picking, and many people flock to orchards in September and October to pick their own apples.

Throw a Harvest Party A
re you looking for any excuse to throw a party? How about the change of the seasons? Say goodbye to summer’s heat and hello to fall’s treats with a fun harvest party at your home.
Invite your guests to dig into meals prepared with produce from your garden and desserts inspired by the cool, beautiful season. Impress them with your attention to detail and creative infusion of fall’s most prominent influences. The quintessential harvest party takes some careful planning and the perfect balance of fall foliage, friends and fun. THINK PUMPKINS
Is there a symbol that better represents the fall season than the pumpkin? Utilize the brightness and shapes of pumpkins in your decorations, table centerpieces and even your dishes. Mix in some uniquely shaped gourds on the tables or deck areas to give partygoers something to talk about. Fill a wheelbarrow with an assortment of pumpkins and gourds. If you have friends brining over children, give the kids their own pumpkin to design or color. Pumpkins mean fun during your fall harvest party.
A GRAND ENTRANCE
You want your guests to realize they’re at a harvest party from the minute they pull up in your driveway, so make your entrance grand. Use autumn-shaded streamers to mark your mailbox or front gate. Hang cornucopia-inspired collections from your front patio or build DIY scarecrows out of straw and old shirts. Creatively arrange pump-
kins, gourds, apples and leaves around your walkway and front steps to draw your guests into your harvest wonderland.

Best Crops for Fall A
s the sun starts setting on another productive summer gardening season, it’s time to turn your attention to your fall harvest.
That’s right, you can grow bountiful produce in the cooler fall temperatures. The key to doing so is in the preparation you put into planning and readying your garden for planting. There are many vegetable crop options that thrive in the cooler weather of autumn, so you can include fresh produce in your meals all season long. Some fall vegetables even continue growing after the first frost. As long as you’re prepared to check in on your crops during the cold weather months, it’s time to start plotting your fall garden. BEETS
Beets are about the most robust and resilient fall season plant you’ll find. They are inexpensive and non-temperamental, making for a versatile option in your garden. Another way they are versatile is in how you can use both the root and the leaves for various recipes. When planting these vitamin-rich crops, don’t forget to dig deep so the plans stay cool. It’s also recommended to not let the roots grow too long, as they can toughen the beet and make it

harder to cook. CARROTS
Carrots are the favorite autumn crop of many because of their long shelf life — up to several months — and their crisp, vibrant textures. In the southeastern or central parts of the country, consider planting your carrots in September and expect a late winter harvest. Let them grow to full size or pick them earlier at your convenience. BROCCOLI
According to Organicgardening.com, broccoli is one of the best fall vegetables for the home garden. Broccoli stands up to pests and can flourish in the colder months, as well as in the springtime. Rich in vitamins and minerals, broccoli can be started indoors from seed or planted outdoors. You may have more luck growing broccoli indoors and transplanting it after a few weeks to help the plants stand up to the cooling temperatures in autumn.
Apple Pie Recipe I
s there anything better in the fall time than sitting down with a heaping hot slice of warm apple pie? Yeah, we didn’t think so.
Making an apple is as easy as, well, pie. Follow the recipe below from Pillsbury to pull off your own version. Don’t forget to compliment your creation with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and cup of milk. Ingredients Crust: 1 box Pillsbury refrigerated pie crusts, softened as directed on box Filling: 6 cups thinly sliced, peeled apples (6 medium) 3/4 cup sugar 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1 tablespoon lemon juice Directions Heat oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit. Place 1 pie crust in ungreased 9-inch glass pie plate; press firmly against side and bottom. In large bowl, gently mix filling ingredients and spoon into crust-lined pie plate. Top with second crust. Wrap excess top crust under bottom crust edge, pressing edges together to make a seal. Cut slits or shapes in several places in top crust. Bake 40 to 45 minutes or until apples are tender and crust is golden brown. Cover edge of crust with 2- to 3-inch-wide strips of foil after first 15 to 20 minutes of baking to prevent excessive browning. Cool on cooling rack at least two hours before serving.

Wisconsin State Parks
Considered the first rail-to-trail in the United States, the Elroy-Sparta State Trail remains one of the most popular trails in the country. With three rock tunnels and five towns along its 32.5 mile route, the trail is a favorite Wisconsin biking destination. Between Sparta and Elroy the trail passes by wetlands, prairies, farmland and unglaciated areas. Three century-old railroad tunnels highlight the trail. The tunnels near Kendall and Wilton are each about a quarter-mile long. The tunnel between Norwalk and Sparta is three-quarter-mile long. The tunnels are dark and cool, even on the brightest days, and flashlights are a necessity. The Elroy-Sparta State Trail links to two other state trails. A bridge over Interstate 90 in Sparta connects the LaCrosse River State Trail to the Elroy-Sparta State Trail on the west end, and the 400 State Trail connects to the trail at Elroy Commons on the east end. There is also a connection at Elroy Commons to the 13-mile Omaha Trail. A daily or annual State Trail Pass is required for riders 16 and older.

MILL BLUFF STATE PARK
Surface Type: Crushed limestone.
Mill Bluff State Park has 21 wooded or partially wooded family campsites. Hike the trails, The Nature Trail begins at the far end of the east picnic area. This .4-mile-long trail is self-guiding. Hikers will learn about wildlife, trees, wildflowers and geology. Part of this trail is accessible for people with disabilities. A historical marker here describes the geological features of the area. For the more ambitious, stone steps wind their way to the top of the bluff. In the mid 1930s, the Work Progress Administration (WPA) built 223 stone steps that lead to the top of Mill Bluff, where an observation deck on the north end offers an excellent view of the park and the surrounding area .The park is located at 15819 Funnel Road, Camp Douglas, Wisconsin. Phone: 608-427-6692, or Reservations: 608-337-4775.
Caution: Dismount and walk bikes through the tunnels. The tunnels are always cool and sometimes wet; windbreakers, flashlights and caps are recommended. A short section near Sparta is open to shared bicycle/motor vehicle use. Hikers also use the trail; always yield to pedestrians.
