Millionaireasia India announces The seventh edition of Precious Golf Cup...

editor’s note

THE PROMISES OF TOMORROW Dear Readers A New Year has begun, a vast canvas of opportunities waiting for us to colour it with the shades of our hopes and dreams. American inventor and entrepreneur Charles Kettering, a man with a staggering 186 patents to this name, once stated, “every time you tear a leaf off a calendar, you present a new place for new ideas and progress.” We may now check the date on our mobile phones instead of on a physical calendar, but the principle remains the same. Each New Year is a chance to write a fresh chapter in the stories of our lives. It is therefore, extremely important to begin well because that always sets the momentum for everything else which follows. Keeping that context in mind, 2018 will shape up to be a brilliant year for Millionaireasia India because we have got ourselves to a dream start. Quite incomparable, if you ask us. Karan Johar in Monaco for the cover shoot of Millionaireasia India. That is how the year has begun for us. One of the most iconic names in Indian cinema who has, almost singlehandedly, reinvented the artistic core of moviemaking and the business of films, at one of the most breathtaking locales in the world. The fact that Karan Johar is amongst the most influential names in the entertainment industry today is indisputable. A fabulously multi-faceted persona, he straddles many different worlds and stamps each one of them with characteristic flair. However, what is remarkable is that this is a man who has not let all that success go to his head. Karan Johar, inspite of the mega brand that he is, remains a thoroughly grounded man, constantly aware of where he is and where he needs to be. A brilliant conversationalist, Karan’s ready wit and charm, combined with the stunning backdrops of Monaco, certainly one of the most gorgeous places in the world, have given us an edition that is absolutely perfect to start off the year with. This issue of Millionaireasia India is a window into everything that will make the ultra HNI universe buzz this year. From brand new investment opportunities to stunning yachts and automobiles; from the greatest operas to cutting edge fashion, we bring you the best there is from the world of good taste and luxury. Here’s to a very Happy 2018. Stay wealthy. Stay Happy.

Twice As Lovely The breathtakingly beautiful town of Baden-Baden in Germany redefines luxury and wellness amidst a landscape that is absolutely picture perfect

L

ocated in the northern foothills of the Black Forest, on the banks of the Oos River, Baden-Baden has cultivated and nurtured a well-deserved reputation as the “Summer Capital of Europe”. Steeped in culture, this gloriously beautiful town in the state of Baden-Wurttemburg in Southwestern Germany, boasts the second largest opera and concert hall in Europe, which hosts some of the most spectacular concerts, ballets and operas, ever. Baden-Baden has always been a firm favourite with the rich and famous and the actress Marlene Dietrich once remarked that the town had “the most beautiful casino in the world.” Roulette, blackjack and poker acquire a superlative ambience created by arcades and magnificent staterooms that resemble the French royal palaces. There is no denying the fact that Baden-Baden has a never-ending repertoire of attractions that never fail to enthral. However, it is also a town that is famed for its spas and wellness spots. The town’s two thermal baths have attracted guests from all over the world. Baden-Baden’s globally famed hot springs well up from a depth of 2000 metres and are used to treat a variety of conditions. The Caracalla Spa, with more than 3000 square feet of bathing and wellness space, provides exceptional ambiance for relaxing in thermal water. The town is also home to some of the most opulent hotels and was awarded the trophy for Best Luxury Destination at the recently concluded Travel + Leisure India & South Asia’s India Best Awards. Baden-Baden’s credentials as a luxury destination were firmly cemented when former US President Bill Clinton, and regular guest in Baden-Baden, described it as a place that is “so nice that you have to name it twice”.

glory revisited The Tradition collection from the House of Breguet is a grand homage to the pioneering spirit of its founder and proves that A-L Breguet was a visionary in every sense of the word

E

ven for a legacy as vaunted and venerated as the one established by Abraham-Louis Breguet, there have been moments that soar above everyday breakthroughs and establish themselves as benchmarks. One such watershed moment arrived in 1796 when A-L Breguet finalised a new model, which came to be known as the Subscription watch. Endowed with a relatively large diameter, a single hand and an enamel dial, these watches, according to their creator, were made in such a way that “a devotee of mechanics could follow all its effects through the open side.” A runaway success from

the time it was unveiled, Subscription received a resounding tribute through Breguet’s Tradition collection in 2005. Tracing its spirit back to 1796, the Tradition collection became the first contemporary timepiece to reveal the movement organs above the mainplate. Its extraordinary architecture comprises a barrel in the centre, a dial at 12 o’clock, and a balance wheel which forms an arc that stretches from 4 to 8 o’clock. The protective pare-chute shock absorbing system, invented by A-L Breguet, makes the Tradition watches instantly recognisable and places the collection within an indubitably pioneering parenthesis.

Tradition 7027 Embodying the spirit of cutting edge innovation and awe-inspiring aesthetics which have always been a Breguet hallmark, the emblematic Tradition 7027 design has now been interpreted as a two-colour creation. Its pink gold case holds an anthracite grey movement which emphasises its bridges and bars, particularly the escapements fitted with the iconic pare-chute in bevelled steel. The watch’s 507DR displays the entire movement built on either side of the mainplate. The movement proper has received a grey anthracite surface treatment and the visual contrast between its grey tones and the pink of the gold case add to the watch’s modern good looks. The lustrous black dial, off-centred at 12 o’clock is another nod to a contemporary ethos. The Tradition 7027 is also available in pink gold with a pink gold mainplate, bridges and bars or in a white gold case fitted with the new anthracite movement. The Tradition 7027 is also available in pink gold with pink gold mainplate, bridges and bars or in a white gold case fitted with the new anthracite movement.

Tradition 7057 New versions of the 7057 are simultaneously a nod to a glorious heritage and a visionary future. This is a watch that is as traditional as it is innovative and that is one of the reasons why it has made a permanent place for itself in an exclusive circle of iconic fine watchmaking creations. The House of Breguet has introduced three new variants of this illustrious timepiece. One has an 18-carat red gold case and a 507DR calibre with red gold-plated finish. The other two feature an 18-carat white gold or red gold case housing a movement with a matt grey NAC finish. Surface treatment such as the one featured on these watches deposits a charcoal-grey alloy of precious metals from the platinum family through electroplating. Each of these three variants showcase the exceptionally high quality of the Tradition collection in their own way. Classic or contemporary, all three are representatives of technical architecture and intriguing micromechanics. The construction of these pieces is unique because it displays the arrangement on both sides of the central plate – bridges, gears, escapement and the pare-chute shock absorber – all of them shine through in flawless hand-bevelled steel.

Tradition GMT 7067 In accordance with the central theme of the Tradition collection, the GMT 7067 brings together all the attributes of a Breguet masterpiece. The delicately fluted caseband, classic Breguet hands with a moon cut into their tips, welded lugs and an engine-turned dial with a secret signature and an individual number. The new reference 7067 also comes in a timezone model which international travellers will certainly appreciate. The distinctive architecture of the watch, which reveals the mechanisms of the movement on the dial side of the baseplate, is commensurate with its ease of operation. A button on the caseband at 10 o’clock sets the timezone, which can be seen on an off-centre dial at 12 o’clock. A second engineturned dial at 8 o’clock shows the reference time with its day/night indicator, alternating between silver and black at 10 o’clock. The manually wound movement boasts a power reserve of 50 hours and comes fitted into a 40 mm diameter case in rose or white gold.

Tradition Fusee Tourbillon 7047 in Pink Gold Equipped with the technically sophisticated handwound Breguet calibre 569, the 7047 Tourbillon is forwardlooking in its design sensibility where its transparency, contrast and relief combine to breathe life into each and every component of the watch. In terms of its far-reaching technical ability, the power reserve of this watch is the object of a patent application while its yellow gold case holds centuries of exceptional horological expertise. There are many aspects of the 7047 which evoke Breguet’s earliest works. The upper bridge in titanium and the dial, secured by three blued screws, bring to mind the historic souscription watches designed by A-L Breguet himself.

7097 Tradition Automatique Second Retrograde The 7097 Retrograde gets its name from the retrograde seconds hand at 10 o’clock, which supplements the hours and minutes shown by the classic and instantly recognisable Breguet hands in blued steel. To maintain the symmetry of the watch, the groundbreaking pare-chute shock absorbing system is located at 4 o’clock. The Tradition 7097 is a homage to both the subscription and tact watches in the sense that it reveals the bridges, wheels, escapement barrel and other components of the movement, which are usually hidden beneath the baseplate. The bridges and the baseplate are peened utilising a decorative technique that requires extraordinary finesse and flawless execution to achieve a smooth and uniform finish. The gold winding rotor draws inspiration from the age of subscription watches while the dial in silvered gold offset at 12 o’clock is evocative of the type of dial Abraham-Louis Breguet made for the tact watches from 1799 onward. That is not to say that everything about the Retrograde is a throwback to the past. Its 40mm case houses a movement with an inverted in-line lever escapement with silicon pallets and a silicon Breguet overcoil balance spring which ensures exceptional stability of rate.

7077 Tradition Chronograph Independent A winning combination of progressive technical innovation and incomparable aesthetics, the Chronographe Independent is noted for the symmetry of its design. The engine-turned dial in silvered gold is offset at 12 o’clock while the chronograph hand is fixed at the centre of the watch. The chronograph-activation indicator is at 6 o’clock while two retrograde hands, directly opposite each other at 12 o’clock and 10 o’clock respectively, indicate the power reserve of the watch and the chronograph minutes.

Legacy Of Excellence The House of Breguet has an illustrious repertoire of pocket heirlooms

Breguet N°960 Sent on October 2, 1802 to Mr. de Betancourt, this wondrous creation comes in a gold case with gold pointer and studs, a silver dial and ruby cylinder escapement.

Tradition Dame 7038 A flagship model of the year that went by, the Tradition Dame 7038 was unveiled at Baselworld 2017 and immediately served notice of Breguet’s success in feminising a model whose aesthetic core is built around mechanical horology, a field many consider to be an exclusive male preserve. Exquisitely crafted with the barrel decorated with a rosette motif and overlapped at 12 o’clock by an offset dial in natural white mother-ofpearl, the Tradition Dame features fine, hand-crafted, engine-turned Clous de Paris hobnailing. The bezel is adorned with 68 brilliant cut diamonds which add to the remarkable appeal of this creation.

January – February 2018

Breguet N°1009 A dazzling blue enamelled gold case, diamond-set pointer and studs, silver dial and ruby cylinder escapement mark this watch which was sold in 1802 to the ambassador from Naples.

Breguet N°1576 Sold to Breguet’s agent, Mr. Moreau in St. Petersburg, this magnificent sphere is built around a gold cuvette with a large engine-turned case, silver dial and ruby cylinder escapement.

A Complete Destination Yousef Alkhan, Director of Marketing and Promotion for the Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority, showcases all the reasons that make Bahrain a visitor’s delight By Parineeta Sethi and Sam Lal

As a country and as a destination, Bahrain is a true global spot where the old meets new, happily.

because we believe we are a short-haul destination. We are close not only in terms of the geographical distance but also in terms of the culture and the people.

Please tell us a little about the Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority. The Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority (BTEA) was formed two years ago. Tourism is now a huge focus area for the government with regard to increasing revenues and for diversifying the economy and GDP of the country. As of the year 2016, we had reached a point where 6.3 per cent of the GDP was coming in from tourism, which was a jump of around four percent from the last couple of years. We now have a very strong goal to take this figure up to around eight per cent in the next couple of years. Therefore, there is a big push from the government to promote tourism and ensure that tourism is an important factor of the economy. That is the reason why the BTEA has been formed. We promote Bahrain as a destination for people to come in and visit.

Would you describe Bahrain as a complete destination where the old and the new merge seamlessly into each other? Yes, absolutely. Bahrain is very unique in that sense. We do have the malls and the hotels and the entertainment but we also have the history and the culture which we believe will attract a lot of visitors from India and all across the world. People are now very interested in learning about the history and culture of other countries and our history and culture is so intertwined with India because of our trade relations which go back all the way to 2000 BC. Trading of pearls and spices, dates, coppers was very widespread and if you visit some of the old houses in Bahrain you will find that the wood used to construct those homes comes from India. Mumbai was the main trading partner for Bahrain. If you read old documents, all the trade ships went to Mumbai or Bombay, as it was known then.

Which areas would you describe as your biggest markets? The biggest markets for us are mainly GCC and Saudi Arabia. We have a 25 kilometre causeway that links us to Saudi Arabia. We are now in detailed discussions to build another one which will also have a rail link. This will be part of the GCC rail network that is being talked about and being developed right now. Saudi Arabia is our biggest market in terms of the numbers it brings in, which stands at over seven million every year. So, of course, we have to be focussed on that market but now there is also a strong push on targeting other markets. The Indian market is a huge outbound market. People are travelling more and more and we want them to come to Bahrain

What activities and experiences does Bahrain offer to the HNI traveller? First off, I think we have all the hotels which will attract them. From the Ritz-Carlton to Four Seasons, to Sofitel, we have the hotels that cater to HNIs. The new Jumeirah which will open in the next two months offers great amenities in the ultraluxury space. In terms of activities we have everything from fast motoring roads to sky diving. There are a lot of water-based activities like snorkelling. There is a new activity that we are promoting, which is diving for pearls. We believe this is an activity people will always remember.

The eternal sparkle Stephen Lussier CEO, Forevermark and Executive Vice President of Marketing, the De Beers Group of Companies, divulges what makes diamonds so precious By Rama Ahuja

According to Stephen Lussier, India is a bright, shining spot in the diamond industry. He is confident about charting an upward growth trajectory in the country in 2018 to the tune of approximately 30 per cent based on the fact that India has been expanding its market share continually for the past five years. What makes diamonds special according to you? Diamonds are unlike anything else on this planet. The youngest diamond is at least a billion years old and it will last forever. It is this sense of timelessness which allows you to create your own heritage and an enduring legacy that you can pass down through generations, that sets diamonds apart. What sets a Forevermark diamond apart from other diamonds? Forevermark diamonds are hand-selected for their beauty and rarity. Each Forevermark diamond is also responsibly sourced, originating at a carefully selected mine that benefits the people, community and country where it is located. Less than one percent of the world’s diamonds are eligible to become Forevermark. Every Forevermark diamond is inscribed with a number that represents a three-fold promise: that the diamond is beautiful, rare and responsibly sourced. Invisible to the naked eye, this inscription includes the Forevermark icon and a number that is unique to you Please tell us a little about Forevermark’s foray into the Indian market. Forevermark was launched in India in 2011 and has enjoyed strong growth ever since. Over the past few years, Forevermark has expanded its presence to over 40 cities across India and today the brand is established not only in the key metro cities but also in Tier 2 and Tier 3 locations. In these locations, we have and will continue to partner with select authorised jewellers who share our brand ethos. How was 2017 for Forevermark in terms of boutiques launched? It has been rather eventful! Earlier this year we celebrated inscribing our two millionth diamond (which took place in our Surat-based facility) as well as the opening of our 2,000th global retail door, which comes almost eight years after launching the Forevermark brand, and is a fantastic achievement. We recently opened our first exclusive Forevermark diamonds store in Bangalore in partnership with CKC Jewellers and will soon be opening another one in Kolkata. The growth has been steady so far and we look forward to creating and designing more collections fit for the discerning Indian consumer. The brand in India to date has opened 230 doors and is currently working with 91 retailers across India who share similar values and provide fashion forward jewellery to their customers.

Eminent American architect, Frank Lloyd Wright, once rightly said, “Give me the luxuries of life and I will willingly do without the necessities. Living luxuriously calls for quality rather than quantity. Investing in cherished experiences is what makes the difference, and is what we can term, a life well lived. Celebrities from across genres get candid about their choice of places to visit, the eateries and events to experience or the top notch happenings that hold their interest. While we have a masterchef taking us through assorted aromas and flavours at top notch eateries, we have a high flying corporate taking us through premier travel hotpots. Moving on, a golf maestro takes us through the prime golf courses across the world even as a celebrated artiste talks about the operas that are havens of art aficionados. Also, a noted fashion designer introduces us to events that find takers only amongst the creme de la creme.

here is something about Karan Johar. His unapologetic candour instantly makes you take a liking for him, that is, if you can handle someone who has opinions and is unafraid to voice them. His company; Dharma Productions has produced more than 35 films including a series of blockbusters and is the most sought after production house in the country. Recognised for dishing out movies with soul-stirring storylines that feature never done before megastar casting, which in turn results in record box office collections, Dharma Productions is known to create new benchmarks in the Indian film industry. From making his directorial debut at age 25 to being someone who has mentored numerous successful directors, Karan Johar has traversed a long road that has been dotted with many significant milestones. Addressing himself as a team-player, Karan attributes his success to the collective efforts of his team. What sets him apart from the others in the film industry is an inherent awareness of his strengths and weaknesses juxtaposed with a knack of being able to adapt to changing circumstances. His business acumen, astute observational skills, ability to keep up with people of all age groups and an EQ that is at par with his IQ, give him the cutting edge to make movies like no one else does. Please tell us a little about your journey into films One way of looking at it is that being the son of a film producer, it was natural for me to get into films. But it was not as simple as that. Mumbai is geographically divided into south and north. North Mumbai is where the film industry is based. All the film families lived in the suburbs of Juhu, Bandra and Andheri. I, on the other hand, grew up in Malabar Hill in South Mumbai, because of which I was very distant from the world of movies and the movie fraternity. People in our neighbourhood didn’t know what was happening in the film industry and were quite elitist, snobbish and snooty about it. My journey started with this love for listening to old Hindi film songs. I was the only child and we lived in a tiny apartment. I grew up listening to songs of Mohammed Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle. When the VHS phase started I wanted to see the visuals that were attached to the musical memories. At the age of 8 or 9 I watched films such as Pyaasa and Kaagaz ke Phool – when kids my age were watching all kinds of cartoons. I knew I was passionate about films, but, as a spectator and not

44

necessarily as a film-maker. It was Aditya Chopra, who made me realise Hindi cinema is my calling and that I should actually do nothing else but work with him on his debut film; Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. Dharma Productions Pvt. Ltd. had been established by Yash Johar; your father. Did you ever feel the weight of a legacy being carried on your shoulders? No, he never carved or paved the way for me to take the helm. It was I who felt the need to enhance and empower Dharma Productions. When I lost my father at age 32, I could have shut shop and just been a director and not taken the burden of a production house as I was never business inclined. But on the 4th day after he passed away, I remember coming back into an empty office and staring at his photograph and realising that if I wouldn’t take on additional responsibilities, I would not be justifying all those years of hard work that went into the creating of Dharma. You, with your fresh and modern outlook towards Indian commercial cinema, have brought in a breath of fresh air. Was it a conscious decision to do so or is it something that happened organically? Kuch Kuch Hota Hai is the result of my love for vintage Hindi cinema and my new age sensibilities, which today may not seem very fresh or new. Shah Rukh in the movie wears a cool chain which is far from cool but at that time it was considered cool. We incorporated sports brands that I thought were designer brands such as Polo Sport and GAP. I brought in a sensibility of a new age look and packaged it with vintage pre requisites of mainstream cinema such as songs, dance, drama and even melodrama. Aditya Chopra in 1995 and me in 1998 ushered in a new way of looking at mainstream commercial cinema which had a balance of sensibility, aesthetics and narratives of storytelling. What were the challenges you faced while directing your first movie? How did you overcome them? The challenges were the fact that I was very young and inexperienced. I was only 24 when I was directing it and 25 when it released. Fortunately I was working with friends; Shah Rukh and Kajol. Aditya Chopra, who was my mentor and my guide was very supportive all through the journey. Even his father, Yash Chopra was looking over me creatively and even otherwise. Also, my indulgent father gave me everything I could have asked for. I would love to tell you a struggle story but there really wasn’t one.

How do you think your style of filmmaking has evolved since you started? I think I would say that I have adapted over the years, I am not sure if its evolution. We have gone from high melodrama to drama to now subtlety. From lip sync songs to storytelling songs. There’s also a change in tonality of characters to make them more real. It’s very important for me as a mainstream entertainer to constantly be relevant which means I need to listen to the voices of the younger generation without thinking of myself as superior, more experienced or more evolved.

What are the biggest challenges you see today in the business of film making and how do you plan to overcome them? I think cinema is definitely going through a crisis. Cricket and films used to be the only source of entertainment, which is no longer the case. Now, as film makers, we are combating television as well as digital media, because of which we are rapidly losing footfalls in cinemas. We are going through a major crisis and if we don’t take heed right now, it will definitely collapse on us. The biggest challenge is to up our game by making quality films. We need to empower writers who can put out great content.

How has the business of entertainment evolved since your first film; KKHH? Totally. We have gone from being completely ad hoc to streamlined, from being all over the place to being disciplined, from being a bunch of individuals to a corporate identity. Those are the enhancements. But on the flip side, there’s also the loss of emotion and the loss of intimacy that we had as a unit. Now, it’s all about managers, publicists, corporate energies, formalities and emails. We were much more of a fraternity. Now, I’m sorry to say we are an industry. There was a time when people would watch movies for the joy of doing so. Now, it’s about how many stars did the film get and how many crores did the film make. I personally feel that crores are not for the audience to worry over. The one question that needs to be asked but nobody does is that ‘What did you think of the film?’ When people disregard a film because a certain critic gave it two stars, I do feel disappointed. I feel people must watch films for themselves as it is possible that they may find a connect that the critic didn’t. I think a lot of these issues crop up thanks to social media which, otherwise, is a boon. Everyone has an opinion and everyone exercises it. I do feel let down when people, mid-way through the movie, post on social media that the first half isn’t good or hashtag epic fail.

What according to you are the major milestones of your journey as an entrepreneur? I think the one moment where I decided to take on Dharma Productions as a regular production house not just me as a director was a major milestone. Every time I launch a new director or a talent – I look at it as a new milestone. We have launched 15 newcomers – 11 of whom have been successful. We have launched 3 actors and are going to launch 4 more. In fact, every time that I put out a film out there – I look at it as a milestone.

Has the shift towards digital media affected films in India yet, how so? Netflix and Amazon churn out some amazing content. I am a big fan of so many of those shows and am sad to say that I am now watching lesser cinema and succumbing to the digital wave myself. Reality is that things are changing, the landscape is shifting and one needs to adapt. We at Dharma are enhancing our digital energies and will definitely go digital soon.

Now that you are a father to Roohi and Yash, how do you maintain a balance between different roles and responsibilities in life? I have to admit that it’s not easy, but luckily for me, my mother and I co-parent Yash and Roohi. I divide my time between the house and the office. The only glitch is that my office is an hour away from my residence – I lose out two hours of the day just to traffic snarls. But I balance it on weekends. What advice would you give to a newcomer who wants to make it big as a director? Be aware, not deluded. Know your level in terms of

skill set. I know my level and I expect people to know theirs. If you feel there is space for growth and expansion as a creative energy – do what it takes to get to that point.

What are your thoughts on success? Success is doing your job well and loving what you do. When you are happy with what you do, you are successful.

Who or what inspires you? While Yash Chopra inspired me as a film maker, my father inspired me as a human being. Mr. Amitabh Bachchan inspires me as a creative energy. My mother inspires me as a woman of value and as a woman of substance. Gauri Khan inspires me as a home maker.

What makes you successful? I would say it is the three As - affability, awareness and accessibility that make me what I am.

What are some of life’s lessons that you would like to share? Try to level your expectations. Don’t do something for a reaction. I know it’s really difficult not to, but, if you can control your level of expectations you will reach some sort of a Nirvana. What has been your most extravagant indulgence? I indulge on a daily basis. Every time I shop online, it is an indulgence. The problem with traffic in Bombay its that is co-related with my online shopping. If I am stuck in a car, I shop. Tell us about your hobbies/interests? My best friend – Kaajal Anand tells me I am a man of two interests – talking and shopping. If that sounds frivolous, so be it. I personally think that people are my biggest hobby. I like to absorb their energy and put it into my work. If you don’t catch me with a person then you will surely catch me shopping. What is your take on luxury? It’s a necessity for me. I love to fly well and stay in the best of hotels. In fact, I am obsessed by hotels! My alter ego wants to live in a hotel. What are your thoughts on wealth? Wealth, I think is not limited to money, it extends to knowledge, relationships, emotions and love. What are your thoughts on this beautiful place where we have been shooting the cover? Monaco is an amazing experience. It has luxury, beauty, culture and even tranquillity. Monaco has everything that one might want when on a holiday.

What is the one thing that you would like to be remembered for? The one film that I still haven’t made. I feel I have made films that have contributed to pop culture, but not genius culture. And the moment you go to create genius – you fail. It has to come from some broken place in your inner self and I hope I am broken enough to make something great eventually. What is the one thing that you would like Dharma Productions to be remembered for? For consistency, storytelling, quality and supremacy over the other production houses in those departments. Where do you see Dharma Productions in five years? In a hopefully bigger place than it is today. Favourite holiday destination: I am a concrete jungle man. I love New York, it’s my soul city. It has irony and huge dichotomy. While it’s a buzzing city there’s an intrinsic loneliness. It describes me in a sense. Is there anything that you like to collect? I am an art collector. I have 100 pieces of art. Whenever a piece of art it talks to me – I buy it. My first painting was the blue Raza – I bought it for `5,75,000 in 2001. My father thought I was mad. Unfortunately, he didn’t live long enough for me to tell him its `2 crores now. Favourite cuisine? Parsi food. I just love dhansak. Favourite restaurant? Fred’s at Barneys New York and Nobu Matsuhisa’s Nobu restaurants across the world.

make a difference Investments have stepped beyond the realm of assets and have bordered on the transcendental with the idea of living a fuller life By Rajmohan Krishnan

T

he curtain closes on 2017 and with New Year on the horizon, it is worthwhile to assess the year gone by and look at the possibilities for the coming year. Last year a mixed bag of global events (political, economic, social and technological) have influenced the overall investment environment. On a positive note, the ease of doing business globally has gone up. Renewables have galloped on the back of half of the new additions to the power generation capacity globally. However, the global food situation, water crisis, geopolitical tensions, climate change and education continue to be areas of widespread concern. In this backdrop, let us assess the possibilities the ultra- rich can explore while making a difference to the world at large.

Social Impact Investment Having established themselves in their respective vocations, ultra high networth individuals and families usually aim to give back to the society. This is often done by championing a cause close to them- such as opportunities for women or education for the underprivileged or in the arena of elderly care. Responsible investing has become a popular way for the ultrahigh net-worth individuals and families

January – February 2018

extending their philanthropic initiatives in a more structured fashion. This can be done through various modes - including but not limited to identification and funding social startups, for whom, access to capital is often a stumbling block to achieve a viable scale. Other ways of impact investing are through opportunities in other asset classes and investment products such as climate-focused bonds, community investment loan funds and global ESG mutual funds. For a family, it will make sense to identify or appoint a family member as a “champion” who is interested in exploring investing for impact and can encourage family members to discuss their social goals and causes that can be used as investment vehicles. Further, this can be followed up by engagement with professionals with expertise in impact investing. Opportunities focussed on Food security In 2016, nearly 108 million people globally were reported to be facing food crisis of extreme severity. This was an increase of 35% over the previous year’s figure of 80 million. With the increase in global population figures, there is an adverse but a direct relationship to the worsening of climate conditions, aggravating geopolitical tensions and crop yields that are flatlining

investment

Private investments must be directed at developing and implementing solutions to manage water crisis resulting in food crisis. These conditions won’t be improving anytime soon. To add to the pain, approximately 1.3 billion tonnes of food produced for human consumption, gets lost or wasted every year, as per a UN report. The silver lining is that there is heightened awareness globally to make a change in partnership with researchers dedicated to find possible solutions thereby leading to an increase in the number of agricultural start-ups, food and agri-based venture capital culture. Case in point- Germany based Startup, FoPo aims to tackle the hunger and waste at the same time by collecting fruit

and vegetables that would otherwise be discarded and turning them into powder to significantly extend their shelf lives. Similarly, in Bengaluru, India, Lebanese restaurant Byblos initiated a “fridge of kindness” to store leftovers from the day which could be used to feed the city’s homeless and hungry. There are numerous similar examples from across the world, such as Sainsbury’s from the UK to Amsterdam based Seamore foods to Sensilize from Israel. While many organisations and individuals around the world are making innovations to beat the food security crisis, it makes sense to cash in on the opportunity and invest into it - both from a philanthropic and financial perspective. Water Water, the life-sustaining resource is highly finite. To add to the woes, the quality of the resource is deteriorating each day, reducing the water dependability. The investment required to meet the challenge on a local and global level runs into trillions of dollars.

While governments world over do their bit, private investment goes a long way in tackling the issue. Private investments must be directed at developing, implementing and scaling solutions to manage the water crisis. This is a nascent investment area and families can benefit from the opportunity that the sector promises while also creating an impact. One stellar example of a family addressing this issue is the Arison Family which set up Miya - a company that aims at abundance of water by improving the efficiency of water utilities across the Americas and the Caribbean, Africa, Europe and Asia. Within two years, Miya saved one billion gallon of water in the Bahamas. Families can invest in water conservation through Environmental impact bonds, Thematic, impact-oriented public equity funds, Green bonds targeted at sustainable water projects, Private investments in municipal water technology companies or through programs related to expanding clean water access worldwide. One such

January – February 2018

example is that of Piramal Sarvajal, started by the Piramal Foundation - the philanthropic arm of the Piramal Group in India in 2008. Sarvajal is a mission driven social enterprise which designs and deploys innovative solutions for creating affordable access to safe drinking water in underserved areas. Sarvajal develops technologies and business practices in the safe drinking water sector that are designed to make a purely market-based model sustainable in both rural and urban deployment conditions. Education Education, in many low and middleincome countries is a cause of concern and the children there face the threat of lost opportunities and lower wages later in life since secondary schools are failing at imparting them with the necessary life skills. As per a UN report, nearly threequarters of students in grade 3 in rural India could not solve a two-digit subtraction such as “46 – 17”—and by grade 5, half still could not do so. This is extremely disheartening and calls for action. Wealthy families have been pioneering the cause of education from time immemorial. From Jamshedji Tata and the Tata Trusts in India to Stephen Schwarzman; Bill Gates to Sam Walton; Nandan and Rohini Nilekani to Azim Premji- the list just goes on. Ek Step Foundation, founded by celebrated couple Nandan and Rohini and Shankar Maruwada aims to gather

partners on a universal, collaborative platform to reimagine learning opportunities for every child. It is an open learning platform that aims to reach millions of schoolchildren with no access to technology to make learning easier. And all that is required is for his or her teacher to have a mobile phone to download the content. Clean energy While attending the One Planet Summit on the 12th December 2017, Heads of states and other leaders affirmed their commitments to fight climate change. Their resolve to tangible action came at the backdrop of concentrations of the

greenhouse gas carbon dioxide reaching their highest level in 800,000 years. Gradually, the effects of climate change are showing up- affecting the flora, fauna and human life; magnifying the pressing need for change to cleaner energy. Given this background, it is sensible to invest into clean energy. In 2015, Bill Gates announced launch of Breakthrough Capital- a coalition fund backed by some of the world’s wealthiest, including Jeff Bezos, Alibaba founder Jack Ma and other prominent names from the Venture Capital world. The fund is aimed at building new technologies in a way that eliminate the devastating impacts of climate change. Clean energy does not promise immediate returns and needs patient capital for extended periods of at least 20 years to show any turnaround - thus making it a not-so-favourable “financial Investment”. However, from a purely philanthropic perspective, and as a part of passing on a legacy to the forthcoming generations, this investment makes immense sense. While there is no dearth of investment opportunities that lie at the disposal of the wealthy, it is wise to make a choice that reaps not only financial returns but also returns that leave a legacy for eternity. Here’s to a New Year filled with health, wealth and wisdom!

block the hack The digital world is all-encompassing and nothing can quite match up to it in terms of convenience. However, there are certain pitfalls we must watch out for

oday everything is digital, from bank transactions to stock investments to making payments and even sharing memories. While all of this is convenient and seemingly happens at the click of the button, it is important to realise that you are not alone and are likely being “watched”. Well, to put it in simple words, the cyber world is full of hackers that are looking to siphon money and stealing information that can cause a huge dent financially and otherwise. Again, this problem is magnified in high networth individuals (HNIs) because of their wealth. According to www.cybersecurity-insiders.com about nine

Mayfair art dealers/galleries in UK have lost almost €1million to hackers through an email scam. “The probe discovered that the methods are simple. Cyber crooks gained access to the art dealers email ids and continuously monitored their emails in and out. When the art galleries sent PDF invoices to clients, hackers sent a duplicate invoice impersonating galleries email address and told client to ignore previous invoice and instead wire payment to the bank account mentioned in the second invoice. The same technique has been used by the hackers to steal money paid by galleries to artists,” says Mimi Partha Sarathy, Managing Director, Sinhasi Consultants Pvt. Ltd.

Stay Safe Naturally, HNIs must ensure they protect themselves against cyber threats and using multi-factor authentication is key. “For years, we have done what our IT overlords have told us to do - use strong passwords, and change them often. But passwords are only one factor and the most common implementation of one of the three factors. The factor of “What you know” is the first. The computers we have traditionally used require only that one factor. The second factor is “what you have.” In other words, this factor uses tokens. If you have ever been sent a text token via your mobile number to help reset a password or log in to a system, then you’ve used this second factor. The third factor is, “What you are.” This third factor is implemented through biometrics. If you have an Apple iPhone that uses

face recognition, you’re already implementing this “what you are” factor. In the future, try to implement at least two of these factors for more security,” advices Dr. James Stanger, Chief Technology Evangelist, CompTIA. Keep the focus on doing simple things like setting some time aside one day a week to monitor credit card statements and bank statements to locate and take necessary action if anything suspicious. Zakir Hussain - Director, BD soft, Country Partner of Bitdefender opines, “HNIs can secure their gadgets by securing an account through Automated System which works on keeping multiple back-ups of the important data and is also certainly worth it. But one always should choose secure and trusted channels to connect to their Corporate Infrastructure or Internet viz. VPN & Secure Trusted Wi-Fi Zone. Doing so could prevent unauthorised accesses. Many Market Software Companies have also launched their own endpoint multilayered security products, for example, antimalware, antispam, anti-phishing and strong content filtration solutions. These solutions are a boon to prevent cyber-threat.” Tools & Techniques In order to equip yourself to counter cyberattacks, you can train yourself with simple one-hour videos and safe computing practices that are usually not part of everyone’s everyday thinking. “Training even if it’s video-based can help ensure that safe computing practices become automatic. It is important

to make security part of your “muscle memory.” We have a product called CyberSecure, for example, that is quite effective. Also use password vault software. For example, if you still have to use only passwords, you will have many passwords to manage. Use a password manager. I call it a “password vault.” But if you use a “password vault,” you can manage them much more easily. Examples of password vault software include LastPass, Zoho Vault, Dashlane and LastPass,” says Stanger. Tech Talk In today’s world the operative word is mobility as we are all on the move with mobile devices that often makes it very easy for attackers to discover your location and if you were away from home. Again it is easier for hackers to find you as you travel and wage some form of attack. “We have more devices available to us than ever before. This fact alone has created a large “attack surface” for each individual. At one time, we may have had one or two networkable devices on our persons. Now it is many (watches, tablets, phones, gaming devices, notebook PCs). The more devices we have on us, the easier it is for someone to exploit a weakness. Each device contains dozens, if not hundreds of applications. Some of these applications could very easily have serious security issues.” This is why there is a need to use new age technologies to ensure that novel threats can be combated. “In the new iPhone, face recognition is a new technology that enables multi factor log in. Most commercial grade handheld devices or laptops come with fingerprint identification system. Password manager programmes compel users to set strong passwords and also send schedules to figure out the time when passwords must change. These programmes can be used on multiple devices and different mobile platforms. Privileged Access Management (PAM) involves the use of special software that can better and more securely track a user’s login session and identify anomalies and, possibly, malicious behavior,” explains Stranger. So it is time to sack the hack and control your safety online.

Exclusivity At Its Finest The Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai, celebrated its 114th anniversary recently. A milestone well-deserved for one of the most iconic addresses in the country By Sam Lal

oaring high above the waterfront, its distinctive red dome is emblematic, the embodiment of a success story, of the rise and growth of a nation and much more. The Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai, is not just one of the defining landmarks of Maximum City, it is an institution that has pioneered luxurious hospitality in the country and in doing so has become India’s most widely-known name in its chosen idiom across the world. This iconic address celebrated its 114th anniversary last month, which encapsulated a journey of innovation and excellence that began on the 16th of December 1903 when The Taj Mahal Palace was founded by Jamsetji Tata who envisioned a hotel that would set benchmarks for Indian hospitality.

Staying true to its founder’s vision, The Taj, as it is popularly known, notched up a series of firsts in its quest to create moments that history could justifiably be proud of. To take stock of but a few, The Taj was Mumbai’s first clear landmark that could be seen from the sea. The hotel, in fact, preceded the Gateway of India by more than two decades. It was the first hotel in India to have electricity, it boasted the country’s first ever 24-hour coffee shop, its first Sichuan restaurant and the city’s first licensed bar. The exalted status which the hotel enjoys was further cemented in June 2017 when The Taj secured trademark rights for its hotel building and its very distinctive dome from the Government of India. From Sarojini Naidu to Bill Clinton and Barack Obama and from Pandit Ravi Shankar to Andrew Lloyd Webber and Mick Jagger, leaders of the world, stars and statesmen, have enjoyed The Taj’s inimitable hospitality and will continue to do so in the future. “The Taj is woven into the lives of generations of Indians,” says Taljinder Singh, Area Director – Mumbai and General Manager, The Taj Mahal Palace. “We feel privileged in setting new benchmarks of fine living and serving our treasured guests for years to come.”

ercedes-Maybach follows up the Mercedes-Maybach 6 Concept with an even more dramatic cabriolet version. Stretching some 236 inches in length, this Maybach is grandly proportioned. The swooping concept car, unveiled at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, is built around aesthetics. In many ways, the 2017 Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabriolet is a continuation concept, taking the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Coupé presented at Pebble Beach in 2016 and removing the top. Powered by a 738-hp fully electric powertrain, the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 cabriolet is said to be able to travel more than 200 miles on a charge while a quick-charging system can add 60 miles of range in five minutes. There are four electric motors, one for each wheel, allowing for all-wheel drive and torque-vectoring functionality. Performance claims include zero to 60 mph in less than four seconds and a top speed governed at 155 mph. It measures nearly 18.7 feet long and 6.9 feet wide, yet offers just two seats. The wheels stand 24 inches tall. Although the 6 Cabriolet runs on battery power (its solitary nod to the future) and therefore lacks an engine,

Executed in Nautical Blue Metallic and fitted with 24-inch wheels featuring 26 spokes and a rose-gold center lock, the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 cabriolet is the open-top version of last year’s coupe concept that took Pebble Beach by surprise. Up front, a grille with 25 vertical slats represents the new face of the brand. The Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabriolet still incorporates the opulence and elegant lines of the previous year’s Coupe concept, but it is the immense size and that glowing interior that transforms the car from an elegant behemoth to a floating 360° open-air luxury lounge. The vestigial radiator grille was inspired by a pinstripe suit. The rear end brings to mind a yacht, a theme apparently chosen to keep anyone from thinking the car draws ideas from something useful, like a container ship. The fabric top features rose gold threads, and it opens to reveal an incredibly sophisticated interior with a classic two-spoke steering wheel, futuristic lighting effects, quilted leather inspired by Chesterfield sofas, and open-pore wood with aluminum accents. The digital instrumentation incorporates physical needles— elements that Daimler describes as “hyperanalog.” The planked wooden floor plays up a maritime theme. The glamorous cabriolet reinterprets classic, emotional design principles in a dramatic manner and combines intelligent beauty with classic, aesthetic proportions and a reduced, technoid appearance – a perfect embodiment of the design philosophy of Sensual Purity. “The Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabriolet takes modern luxury into the realms of the ultimate in luxury, and is the perfect embodiment of our design strategy. Breathtaking proportions combined with a luxurious haute couture interior help to create the ultimate experience,” explains Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer of Daimler AG. Measuring almost six metres in length, the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabriolet incorporates the classic proportions of art deco design with its extremely long bonnet and puristic, flowing lines, and at the same time completely reinterprets these aesthetic principles. With its generous dimensions, the Vision MercedesMaybach 6 Cabriolet continues the series of visionary design show cars from Mercedes-Benz. Thanks to the global nature of the Mercedes-Benz Design function, these concept vehicles take cues from local trends in design, culture and mobility and make these the focal point of the respective mobility concept. The St. Regis, Mumbai has this particular base covered extremely well. eans has been everyone’s constant favourite and there’s no denying that it does serve you well. But its monotony seems to be breaking now. Comfort has become a priority in fashion, Jeans indeed go well with anything but when it comes to ease, trousers and straight fit pants win the case everytime. Selecting a perfect trouser that fits and suits you best isn’t easy. It’s actually an art form to choose the right match for your shirt/t-shirt. An ill-fitted and not so good choice can make you look awful and ugly. You want eyes to be on you but not with an incredulous expression. Right? Therefore you’ll have to make strenuous efforts to choose the perfect trouser that fits the occasion right, is in trend and let you stand out in a crowd. When it comes to choosing a right pair of trousers there are several aspects you need to look at. The utmost factor to be kept in mind is to know the occasion you’re going to wear it. Is it a formal or an informal meet? From slim fits to straights to completely loose pants, fashion for men has evolved over the years. The year 2017 welcomed a new trend called athleisure, synonymous with gym wear

or athletic wear. This sense of styling came into existence when more and more people started bumping to their offices right after hitting the gym. Joggers’ belonging to the same category is something that can be worn at casuals and semi-formal occasions. With the craze of working out going up, people will definitely be seen carrying out this casual yet stylish outfit at most social gatherings and relaxed work days. Men, these days, enjoy laidback styling more as compared to tight fitted trousers. Cargo Pants inspired by thge military are ideal for casual outings and scream out, ‘cool’. With an increase in the number of accessories that men carry nowadays, the patch pockets in a cargo pant actually come as a savior in keeping them safe. For a perfect styling, white sneakers, v-neck t-shirt and a cap are complimentary to cargo pants. The festivities in India come with great oomph and zeal but choosing what to wear in such occasions is actually a gruelling task. Coming to ethnic, straight fit and churidar pajamas are taken over by salwar styled trousers called Jodhpuris. This semi loose fitted pant originated from Jodhpur and areas of Rajasthan and was considered a staple wear for Maharajas. A Jodhpuri salwar/

pant is flared and pleated till the thighs and snug from knee to the calf. It is one of the perfect pant styles for festive occasions and suits best when paired with a bandhgala kurta and Jodhpuri jootis. Bollywood stars have always been an inspiration for fashion. From Saif Ali Khan to Shahid Kapoor, the Jodhpuri look definitely gave their followers a royal styling goal. For a more diversified look, one can pair Jodhpuri pants with a buttoned shirt and a waistcoat. Moving a little ahead of Jodhpuri, comes a dhoti pant which is super comfortable and gives number of options to style with. A dhoti pant or simply dhotis can be paired up with a shirt, t-shirt, blazers, jackets, kurta and almost everything. Due to its transforming nature and the comfort it provides, a dhoti pant will become a rage among men in the coming years. Artful and colourful trousers made block printed pants somewhat passé but achieving a right look with mosaic, patterned or floral prints would require laborious training. A slight wrong choice would end up making you a fashion disaster. Therefore, balancing your look is very important when playing with printed trousers. Bollywood fashion icon, Ranveer Singh never fails to impress us with his quirky sense of styling and has been spotted sporting this newfangled style many a times. After his bearded look, this eclectic style is prominently been followed by men. While pulling off this look requires a lot of courage, but trust me, once you’re confident you can kill like our Bollywood, Bajirao. A pair of chinos fits best on every occasion. Be it formal or a casual day out with friends, it works as an all-rounder. It is one comfortable wear that doesn’t lose the cool quotient. Where rolling up your chinos from bottom and teaming it up with a t-shirt will make it a perfect fit for an outing, regular chinos and a buttoned shirt tucked in, is ideal for formal occasions. For people who are bored of basic black, they can always explore a variety of colours in chinos. The world of fashion proves the saying that ‘whatever goes around, comes around’. One of the trousers that made

its come back from the 70s, is corduroys pants. These pants made of velvety soft material with vertical ‘cord’ or ‘wales’ are one of the most comfortable and cozy pants that one could own. A corduroy pant not just gives you an option to choose the colour of your choice but also gives an old vintage feel of different styles. From bellbottoms, to high waist to straight fit, it looks amazingly beautiful if coupled right. In the year 2018, people will most

likely ditch regular jeans and basic black coloured pants. In moving away from complete formal fashion to semi- formal looks, loose fitted styling could be seen widely. Splash of colours will definitely be the season’s best bet, but taking it a step ahead could be the glittery glam or rugged look to these trousers. The fashion forwards are always adaptive to change and experiments, so there can be a complete new innovative trouser style that we might see in 2018.

osetti Marino, a notable Italian shipbuilder that specialises in the construction of passenger ferries, offshore supply vessels and tugboats, has recently made its foray into the superyacht market. That’s how Rosetti Superyachts were born, and this is their debut project, an incredible expedition-style yacht concept, developed in collaboration with Rolls Royce Marine. Featuring designs by Italian designer Tommaso Spadolini, this 85-meter superyacht was inspired by support and explorer vessels that need to operate around the clock in all weather conditions, although this stunning expedition concept will also show off several impressive amenities and luxurious vibes throughout. Rosetti Superyachts’ first concept will cater to eight guests across four double cabins, while the full beam owner’s suite, with a private lounge, study and special access to the open foredeck with a small pool, is meant to put a smile on the owner’s face. The interior space would total 2,200GT thanks to the towering four-deck superstructure, while Rolls-Royce would take care of the drivetrain. Under the management of Chairman Fulvio Dodich, no stranger to the superyacht industry with past management position at Ferretti and Sanlorenzo, Rosetti superyachts will draw on its shipbuilding and engineering skills to offer clients a range of luxury superyachts, longer-range supply vessels as well as expedition yachts measuring up to 150 metres in length. “We took the decision to launch this initiative based on Rosetti Marino’s remarkable experience, solid financial background and exceptional facilities to create a series of high-level superyachts with semi-custom or fully-customisable identities, as well as providing technical excellence and innovative solutions,”

says Dodich. “We are proposing Made in Italy yachts that are designed and built to the highest technical and safety standards that distinguish the whole Rosetti Marino Group of companies.” Available in two versions, this eye-catching vessel also packs a lovely salon aft, that will be the best place to entertain your guests, thanks to a media room and/or a sky lounge; the helipad might be also a good way to impress people, while the lounge can be replaced by a helicopter hangar. Rosetti Superyachts adds that the design can be tweaked to move the helideck further forward if required. The naval architects at Rolls-Royce Marine aimed for optimal efficiency before coming up with the final draft of this design, while four MTU 16V 4000 engines were chosen to put this vessel in motion. Able to reach a top speed of 20 knots and a cruising speed of 15 knots, this vessel is way cooler than it might let you believe.
