editor’s note

THE FUTURE IS NOW Dear Readers As the recently concluded 90th Academy Awards drew towards the big crescendo, the one aspect that came shining through was that while the sequel to the cult classic, Blade Runner may not really have set the box office ablaze, it had definitely scored big points with the critics. Picking up two statuettes as against a nomination in five prime categories, Blade Runner 2049 depicts a future that makes us all think. It also features flying cars which, apparently, would go on to become the norm in the year 2049. Now here is the point one is trying to make. Flying cars are already preparing for their vertical take-off and landing. Speaking at an investors’ forum last month, Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi stated that his company had good reason to believe they would launch flying taxi services within the next five years. Germany has already tested cars using the VTOL (Vertical Take Off and Landing) prototype which would lead one to suggest that we are not actually waiting for the future to arrive. We are living it right now. This edition of Millionaireasia India is dedicated to the myriad ways in which the technology of today will transform our tomorrows. Concepts such as hyper loop hotels which allow a guest to travel between cities without once leaving the comfort of their hotel rooms are so radically revolutionary, they will, quite literally, usher in a new era of human civilisation. However, it is not all about technology and machines. It is primarily about leaders. Everything that is happening right now in the field of scientific innovation is driven by human spirit and purpose and that is the reason why the future is also about the leaders who have their vision firmly focussed on shaping the days that will come into our lives. Manasi Kirloskar is one such visionary. The Executive Director of Kirloskar Systems Ltd, she hails from a family that has entrepreneurship in its veins and she is utilising technology to truly make a difference. Manasi is also the founder and CEO of Caring With Colour, an initiative that deploys technology to improve learning outcomes for students and for training teachers at Government schools. It is another one of the many ways in which the present is shaping the future.

in time

The Sound Of Time There are innumerable firsts that can be attributed to the House of Breguet and its illustrious founder and probably one of the most outstanding of them is giving time a sound of its own

T

aken in absolute isolation, a fine watch would stand as a representation of the watchmaker’s skill as a master of technology. Someone who utilised the cutting-edge scientific know-how at his or her disposal to create an instrument that drew accolades because of its superior ability to tell time. However, as we all know, a great watch is much more than pieces of machinery working together in perfect harmony. It is the culmination point of the best of technology and unmatched aesthetics which imbues it with an appeal that transcends time itself. Abraham-Louis Breguet understood this well and that is why every single piece which bears his name is an abiding story of ground-breaking technological innovation and elegance which is nothing short of eternal. But A-L Breguet

goes even further. He gave time a hitherto unknown dimension-he made time musical. As horology progressed to explore newer areas, watchmakers began equipping their creations with the ability to count out time audibly. Some utilised bells to achieve this, which was bulky and cumbersome while others deployed tiny hammers to tap on the case back to tell time. Needless to say, the results were far from pleasant to the ear. Abraham-Louis Breguet surmounted this problem forever in 1783 by fitting his ground-breaking watches with circular metallic rings on which the hammers would strike creating a melodious chime. It was just one of the many ways in which the master innovator completely transformed the art of watchmaking and gave time a sound of its own.

Classique Grande Complication 7637 Minute Repeater There is no doubt about the fact that the minute repeater holds an exalted position in the horological universe because there are very few in this world who have the skills required to fit and adjust the delicate parts that go into the making of a minute repeater. The House of Breguet, in its constant quest for innovation, perfected a new way of designing and fitting these parts which also featured innovative positions for the gongs, gong rests and hammers. This patented technique powers the Classique Grande Complication which features a crystal clear sound that has never been heard before in any repeater without chimes. The Classique Grande 7637 comes in 18k silver and rose gold finish and boasts a clear sapphire case back which displays the watch’s hand wound movement.

March – april 2018

Classique Grande Complication 7639 Haute Joaillerie Minute Repeater Often labelled the ‘senior’ companion piece to the 7637 Minute Repeater, the Classique Grande Complication 7639 augments the sonority of the watch by adding the prestige of baguette diamonds to the minute repeater function. The purity and hardness of diamonds reduces vibration loss to a minimum which gives the 7639 a beautifully pure sound that would delight any connoisseur of chiming Grande Horlogerie.

Classique 5447 Minute Repeater & Perpetual Calendar A masterpiece of technical ingenuity and harmony, the new Classique 5447 has created a place for itself in the coveted circle of Grande Complications thanks to the several stunning aspects that come encased in its white or pink gold costume. One such aspect is the rich tone of its sound which is a direct result of the unceasing work at the R&D department of Montres Breguet. Utilising psycho-acoustic tests and analyses that have served to fine-tune clarity and sound resolution, the Classique 5447 is a timeless creation.

Pocket Watch 1907 Tourbillon & Grand Strike Before we go any further into details that make the Pocket Watch 1907 assume one of the highest titles amongst Grandes Complications, here is a significant fact. The yellow-gold case of the watch is made of two secret covers. One hides the face and the other covers the movement assembly. These covers are adorned with a barleycorn pattern and there is only one craftsman in the world today who knowns how to execute this extraordinary masterpiece. If that were not indication enough of the exclusivity of this creation, the Pocket Watch 1907 has been the subject of two patents which is evidence enough of Breguet’s willingness and ability to carry on the legacy of its illustrious founder.

Master Of Vignettes An icon who has made creating landmarks moments somewhat of a habit, Kailash Surendranath is a phenomenally innovative soul with an extraordinary creative ouevre By Sam Lal

It does not matter if you do not know Kailash Surendranath personally because if you have grown up in India of the Eighties and every single decade after it, his works are already an indelible part of your life’s fabric. His is the beautiful mind that has given advertising some of its most memorable moments – from the Liril ad with the girl under a waterfall that completely revolutionised the concept of the ad film to the legendary ‘Mile Sur’ which is embedded in the consciousness of millions, Kailash Surendranath is an extraordinary storyteller. Millionaireasia India settles down for a conversation with the undisputed pioneer.

propaganda messages. They were made at a time when the only TV channel available in India was Doordarshan and they used these films extensively and often and very graciously, gave us credit each time. When a piece of work is appreciated, there are many forces that come together to make it happen. Some intended and some accidental. Music, I feel, was a major force. This country loves music, and we’ve put together musical masters in creating the music for each of these works. Then, there is the fact that people love to identify. They identify with their heroes, with their language, their region, their nation and all these works are pan-Indian.

You provided national integration a brand new vocabulary in the Eighties. How did Mile Sur…come about? It was a wonderful time. India was slowly opening up globally those days but we were still considered a ‘developing’ and ‘third world’ nation. Today of course, things are vastly different. This was the exact brief we received for the first national integration film: ‘spread the light of freedom’. We have and always will take great pride in our sport stars so why not a heroic film about sports stars! We made a list and wrote them letters (this was a time with no mobiles and internet). We then spent more than a month travelling this beautiful country on Indian Airlines filming the passing of a torch, Olympic style. It was a magnificent experience and I loved and cherished every moment.

An astonishing tally of 3500 ad films and counting. What keeps you inspired? I think it is the fact that you keep learning all the time. I started working at a time when TV was not such a ubiquitous medium across the country. Then we have seen the age of cable television and now the internet. Story telling has always been a passion with me and to keep telling those stories across different mediums is what keeps me fresh, rejuvenated and inspired.

It wasn’t a one-off because you have revisited the theme of national integration at periodic intervals subsequently with resounding success. What are some of the factors which, you think, resonated with the audience? These are emotional messages as opposed to informative or

I am working in the field of Virtual Reality these days. I think the core remains the same in as much that you have to tell a story in the simplest form possible but you have so much more at your disposal to make that story as immersive as possible. The new game is to create a bingewatching series or a featurette for the internet. Those are some of the areas that I am focussing on these days and we hope to do some quality work in these areas in time to come.

The Hollywood connection Tom Kiely, President and CEO, West Hollywood, highlights the significance of West Hollywood as a unique, and multi-faceted tourist destination By Pallavi Singh

West Hollywood with its picturesque locales is an idyllic hotspot for a discerning traveller. Having played a key role in promoting West Hollywood, Tom Kiely takes us through the myriad attractions the place has on offer. It’s been a year since you took over as CEO of Visit West Hollywood. How has the experience been so far? Its been really terrific. West Hollywood is very dynamic. The city is a small community with 33,000 residents. Only three square kilometres. We are California’s most walkable city so you don’t need a car. I think Indian visitors will find West Hollywood extremely attractive destination to base their stay and enjoy the greater Los Angeles. What would you say have been the big challenges and the big accomplishments? I think the biggest challenge and also the reasons why we are here in India today is to bring about an awareness of West Hollywood. If you are talking about challenges it is about creating awareness of West Hollywood and getting people to understand that West Hollywood is where all of that Hollywood action happens. Hollywood is really like a production centre—it’s a business centre—they make films, they make television shows but West Hollywood is where people live, celebrities live, they enjoy their lives. As far as big accomplishments go, we are well on our way to be promoting West Hollywood internationally. According to recent estimates, West Hollywood contributes more than $900 million to the US economy annually. What are some of the initiatives you’ve undertaken to build on this further? One of the big things we are doing is fine-tuning our

30

marketing approach by market but also going after more affluent travellers in key markets, India being one of them. We know that Indian travellers appreciate luxury and expect good service. We do try and find the highest levels which is possible in West Hollywood. Many of our hotels are custom specific and most of them are able to deal with high end celebrities, film and television production crews. So when Indians come to the United States, to West Hollywood, we would be able to willingly offer the accommodation and service that they would be expecting. How would you describe West Hollywood? West Hollywood is like the sun of Los Angeles. A lot of activity happens here. It is common to see celebrities at a bar, or restaurants, or shops. Several celebrities own shops and restaurants while many are residents. Each time Indians are looking for a unique type of experience whether it is shopping, dining etc, West Hollywood is the place to be. What are the kind of partnerships you are looking to build with India during this visit and in the long-term? There are several of them. One of them is at the rudimentary level. We want to establish and grow our relationships with travel trade. Secondly, we want to make our connection with the media and the Press in order to promote West Hollywood so your readers can understand the existence of West Hollywood, its uniqueness and raise awareness about the destination. In the longer term we would like to see our Indian numbers to grow. We welcome all visitors regardless of where they are from or who they are. All are treated well and all are treated equally. We know India has affluent travellers so they are very important, I would say.

A Leap into the future

As we step into a newer day and age we attempt to understand the lifestyles the future will have on offer and the methods and modes we would adopt in terms of adding meaning to our lives By Pallavi Singh

Designed to perfection Apurva Bose Dutta, Architectural Journalist feels future home and office spaces would see a reinvention in materials that are earthy and sustainable

T

alk about futuristic homes and what comes to my mind are dynamic, bold, self-sustaining and eco-friendly structures. They are definitely contemporary, imaginative, can be strange, and generally seem to make a statement. Today, when you think futuristic, you think smart. The concept of smart and automation systems and the ease of communication disrupting the whole idea of sitting and working together, the non-hierarchical set up of office spaces, open spaces and spaces to unwind and the importance of interactive spaces are what office spaces today aspire for. Futuristic office spaces are going to build on these. I think they are also going to be designed more sustainably and intelligently, so as not to become energy-guzzlers. I also think that future home and office spaces are going to see a reinvention in materials that are more earthy and sustainable. The integration of nature into these

34

structures is also going to be an inevitable part of these spaces. It’s a novel idea to see the 3D printing processes coming into creating buildings too with houses are being aimed to made net zeroenergy. Any kind of new innovations in the construction industry are always welcomed. However, there has to be a concrete logic and a reasoning to why this innovation is necessary. It would be preferable to see the final product, experience it and get a note on its statistics to understand how comfortable and liveable the space is, the cost and the specifications that have been achieved, before further commenting on it. 3D printing on account of mitigating construction time, greater efficiency, and offering an alternative of cutting on the dependency on skilled labour, has been proposed in India too, however it remains to be an expensive option to consider here.

March – April 2018

From freeform 3D printed homes to massive pods under the sea, architects have come up with some wildly imaginative designs for the future. Things have evolved in a manner that the exuberant imagination of architects extends beyond limits when put into practice

Freeform 3D printed home

The world’s first freeform 3D-printed home just got one step closer to fruition. Designed by WATG Urban, the Curve Appeal home won the Freeform Home Design Challenge in 2016 – and it’s slated to break ground this year after a research and development phase. The futuristic home will be the first of its kind, and it features a complex blend of curved angles and glazed windows.

Green architecture Green architecture is a green building design technique. The designs are created with the environment in mind including focusing on the larger construction implications of environmental sustainability. Green architecture gives careful consideration to designing energy efficient and eco-friendly houses and buildings. Natural ecology is a key concept in green architectural providing the basis for the construction model.

March – April 2018

Underwater architecture Innovative projects in the domain include a wide range of building types based on very different approaches to handling water as the base for buildings – whether as floating or fixed constructions, as new buildings or for reusing existing structures. From the world’s largest underwater restaurant in the Maldives to a community of luxury floating condos in Dubai that put beachfront property to shame, undersea buildings illustrate what can be done when we fuse technology with architecture.

Our new collections are inspired by Japanese kimono patterns and colour ways, audacious sculptural creations with striking geometric lines that are mathematical and futuristic. Products that border between being pieces of furniture and works of art! Timeless designs that blend just as well in a modern setting as they do in a more classical one. The use of brushed brass, sycamore and glass components, new living room themes with bright colours and rounded lines. What is interesting is seeing different features that bring people together, beyond colours and materials. Among them, a subtle vintage reference, an unexpected versatility, anything that adds a touch of charm or functionality.

Materials would connote thickness, materials, movement. The thickness, in the figurative sense, gives meaning to the objects (Aqua, Chimère). The materials (ceramic, marble) allow the designers to build the objects, giving life to their vision. And the movement, whether real or designed, animates pieces that would otherwise be fixed (Abstract, Itinerary, Scala). The aesthetic influences and trends that will shape demand would be marble and wood, colours and extravagance and freedom of form. The home space is less dictated by fads and are furnished with a long-term view as opposed to the fashion space, which changes rapidly. There are home fashion trends that emerge every year and are followed by interior designers to make homes fashionable. These trends are visible in an array of furnishings and will take bigger proportions in the days to come.

Driving into the future PB Venugopal, President, Lexus India opines that automobiles of the future will be guided by artificial intelligence, and advanced human machine interface technologies

T

he auto industry has earned a pat on the back for relentless innovations which have continuously evolved the driving experience, and changed not just the way we transport but the way we travel. Projecting ahead just a couple of years and the future of the way we get from A to B holds some exciting possibilities – from autonomous cars to connected cars. When hybrid electric powertrains debuted twenty years ago, they were hailed for the fuel economy they provided. Twenty years on, the most significant innovation in automotive engineering provides the most viable mainstream option currently for a vehicle that mitigates environmental impact. Our Multi-Stage Hybrid System contributes to an exceptional drive by achieving a more direct link between throttle input, engine and vehicle speed, all while being environmentally-

friendly. The usable range of this engine has been expanded, particularly with regard to vehicle speed. A lower engine RPM drive means excellent quietness when cruising at high speeds. Performance driven hybrids with the highest technology advancements and craftsmanship will set the precedent for the future of luxury vehicles globally, and in India. At Lexus, we are already working towards the future of mobility. The future vision for automobiles will be guided by artificial intelligence, and advanced human machine interface technologies. So, while we are still some way away from doing away with roads, we are close to achieving a different reality which was once thought counter-intuitive, and that is the co-existence of the future of automotive innovation with ecological sustainability. The dreams of the future, may in fact, be a reality today.

Dial into the future Suneet Singh Tuli, Founder & CEO DataWind Inc is of the opinion that touch panel based input devices would remain dominant for the foreseeable future

T

here would be a revolution in terms of design and usage of mobile phones in the future. Let us delve into the concept of futuristic phones. While the physical design and input technologies have evolved from flip-phones to Blackberry type keyboard devices, and now touch panel based input, we think the touch panel based input devices would remain dominant for the foreseeable future. The mobile phones of the future will be marked by several distinctive features. The most important development in smartphones is the implementation of Artificial Intelligence. This would evolve the phone into a full featured companion, functioning as a power personal assistant. This functionality will require phones to be connected to the Internet 24/7, and such would come bundled with Internet access. Talking about the kind of materials to be used going forward, it is important to point out that phones will continue to be made from all kinds of materials including plastics, metal and even wood. The range of materials for external shells is varied, with even glass as the core casing for the phone. The range of materials will cover all such categories, but due to cost and utility, plastic cases will continue to dominate. We believe that touch panel devices will stabilise as the primary form factor of mobile phones, and will not be replaced by either foldable or wearable phones.

40

Millionaireasia India

Instead, accessories as smart watches, clothes, caps or other items that deliver phone alerts would become more common. To improve performance, resistance to water and greater durability will be key features that manufacturers of phones and gadgets use to differentiate their products. Our target market will continue to be the ‘bottom of the pyramid’ segment, that continues to use feature phones and have not been exposed to smartphones and Internet access. By providing affordability in hardware and access, we believe the revolution will be bringing the next billion Internet users online.

These uber convenient hotels are in growing demand as timepoor business travellers find they can be both productive and relaxed, without leaving the airport. The airport hotel will undergo a dramatic transformation in look, feel and function. No longer located near airports – these modern and unique properties will be inside the terminal. It will also be seen that a new style of accommodation with an app will be created specifically for the corporate traveller who wants to use their time efficiently. Many of the world’s major airports have hotel properties located next to them or in close proximity. However, the new airport hotel sits

within the physical boundary of the airport. Connected or located adjacent to an airport terminal, it allows travellers to step directly from their arrival gates, in some cases via immigration, into a different world. In 2020, rooms will be of a premier quality with an emphasis on comfort where noise levels associated with the airport are minimised through effective sound proofing. Airport hotels offer excellent facilities for travellers who need to work, including in-room WiFi, meeting rooms, business and conference facilities, and ambient lobbies. Travellers working for MNCs can meet face-to-face with peers or clients based in the city where they are transiting, away from the hustle of the airport terminal. Leisure facilities also abound in these properties, allowing travellers to dine in relaxed settings, work out at the gym, enjoy a massage or soak up a rehydrating skin treatment.

The key words that characterise the architectural jewels of the future are: luxury space, light, science fiction, super-technology, elegant curves, and exorbitant strategic locations – the hotels of tomorrow will not only be on land but also underwater and even cosmic space

The Lunatic Hotel Moon Expected to be completed in 2050 the hotel can be termed truly futuristic. Water and steel will have to be launched to the moon while existing minerals and ore can comfortably supply most of the building materials, says designer HansJurgen Rombaut from Rotterdam. In specially designed towers, guests will experience low gravity.

Hyperloop Hotels Hyperloop Hotels based on futuristic transit system allow travellers to travel through tubes at near-supersonic speeds. The idea is to transport passengers to their desired city, without them having to leave the comfort of their hotel room. Everything from reservation, check-in, and check-out can be done from any smartphone.

Aeroscraft

Designed by Worldwide Aeros Corporation, it is a flying hotel that hangs in air with 14 million cubic feet of helium. It would accommodate 250 passengers and travel at a speed of 174 miles per hour. The airship would provide tourists with a host of amenities including a casino, restaurants, and staterooms. It simply means that this hotel would be similar to a cruise liner in the air.

The new age of fashion Deepika Govind, Fashion Designer says the future would be about ethical fashion, about being environment-friendly, and about clothes that breathe

esigning is an art in itself with all arts partcipating. The reach of digital fashion is staggering and it is a great tool to reach markets like never before. There would be unique textiles and apparel for the discerning. Futuristic fashion would not only be about technical fabrics and performance fabrics but also ecofriendly natural textiles that are organic in essence. Cutting edge technology plays a decisive role and fashion is finally warming up not only to the idea of game-changing new technology, but its real-life potential to advance what we wear, how it’s designed, manufactured and marketed. 3D printing, is one, explored by brands such as Nike in their range of atheletic footwear and Pringle of Scotland. clothing, an existant technology where you wave your smartphone over a garment price tag and could see pictures of how you could style the garment, or a lookbook of related styles. There’s a lot of R&D being done on colour-changing fabrics, pioneered by the University of Michigan. The colour changes as a result of a reaction when hit by different wavelengths of light. I began the voyage of discovery several years ago blending khadi cotton and khadi silk with Modal(a soft, supple yet strong cellulosic fibre from the bark of trees) thereafter working with Sensitive, a fibre that protects you from UV rays, to a project with Dupont, blending all the Indian silks with 3 pc lycra. While this added greatly to the versatility of traditional textiles, it also increased the scope of usage of pure fibres. In the end it boils down

to the use of pure and natural fibres. And, widening the bandwidth so that someday soon, synthetics can become a thing of the past. The distinctive features of the brand lies in being differentiated by design and affordable luxury. The future would be marked by alternative organic textiles, such as fibre made out of milk, lotus stem, bamboo, soya, corn, and castor seeds. Accessories would be made of unusual materials with unique approaches to upcycling. Fashion would be much more than mere colours and accessories. It is going to be about ethical fashion, about being environment-friendly, about clothes that breathe, and are healing rather than harmful to body and skin. People would like to know where the product comes from, who makes these textiles, those small but crucial stories that comes and gives the garment a breath of life.

Designers look to the future, musing on what is yet to come via everything from lashings of metallics and references to the world of space travel to vast explosions of dresses that challenged perceptions of femininity resulting in an air of excitement and high drama

Sustainable fashion

Swedish fashion companies provide fashion as second hand or have initiated rental systems for leasing clothes and accessories, some focus on creating fashion that is of high quality and timeless design. Brands like H&M have collection and recycling systems that support increased textile recycling.

Multifunctional attire Wearable tech’s future will be about being able to control your body temperature through your coat. Tommy Hilfiger’s jacket boasts of a small portable battery and solar panels attached to the back, while Dutch designer Pauline van Dongen has a stylish T-shirt that does the same job. In the future, designers will harness energy from our bodies for a charge.

Styles that shift in shape

Shape-shifting styles are a bit further away in the future, but not a complete pipe dream. Lacoste showcased clothes that shift colour and sleeves that lengthen. This kind of technology is based on changing the molecular structures of textiles — but it’s something that researchers at the likes of OMsignal, the technology company behind that PoloTech shirt from Ralph Lauren, are working on.

You are part of a family that has entrepreneurship in its genes. Does that create a sense of expectation? Definitely a lot of expectation, which I didn’t realise up until I started working in the family businesses. My parents have created a very high benchmark in terms of their leadership, core competency and values. As much as I want to achieve their level of success, I also want to create my own journey. I want to continue to learn, succeed and fail but never compromise the Kirloskar values of Trust and Ethics throughout this process. I hope to gain everyone’s confidence while I embark on this very exciting journey.

Fact File Shade of art Having been gifted the first easel by her great-grandfather, S.L. Kirloskar, Manasi has been painting ever since she can remember – she was almost born with a paint-brush in her hand. She would draw on walls and bedsheets as a kid. Manasi is a qualified artist from the Rhode Island School of Design. But before that, at the age of 13, she had her first solo painting exhibition in Bengaluru, which was attended by M.F. Hussain. for the love of deep waters Manasi is also a trained deep sea diver. In an article published in a leading daily, she mentioned that diving and corporate life find meaning in each other. The Thoughtful Citizen A sensitive and caring person, Manasi has been doing community service work since the age of 13. Called ‘Caring with Colors’, she started a programme with an NGO, where she taught lesser privileged children Art & Craft at school. She then took their creative work and had it framed and had exhibitions to sell them. the family person Manasi loves spending time with all her aunts, grand aunts, grandmothers and cousins across Bangalore and Pune, attending multiple family functions.

Could you please take us through a typical day in your life as the Executive Director of Kirloskar Systems Ltd.? I work at Toyota Kirloskar Motor, with Lexus and also manage Caring with Colour- A Manasi Kirloskar Initiative as Founder and CEO. For the former, I work at the office and shop floor. The latter entails working with Government schools, education experts, inventors and educational content developers. I also spend some time at our insurance brokerage company Toyota Tsusho Insurance Broker and medical company Kirloskar Technologies. Amidst all this, I never forget to work out in the gym every single day and fit in time to paint on weekends! We understand you are a trained deep sea diver. Where did you learn? I trained for my 18m Padi license in Krabi, Thailand. Then I went on for my 30m and Nitrox licenses in the Maldives. I have always loved swimming in the ocean and was curious about life beneath its surface. Is running a company similar to diving into deep waters? Diving requires a great deal of planning, a calm temperament and ability to face uncertainties. Planning because there is finite volume of air in the tank. Calm temperament to maintain breathing pattern and to not panic during a crisis situation. Finally, the confidence to face uncertainty because we enter a territory that is not ours and cannot truly anticipate what can be encountered deep underwater. Business requires the same level of conscience. I am a huge planner, especially before venturing into a new industry. I think it’s important to build a strong foundation, but at the same time business is always a risk no matter how much one plans. Therefore, a lot of uncertainties lie in the process and it is important to be emotionally equipped to face them. Always be calm during a crisis, because a leader should never panic during a crisis, it demotivates the team. What has been the most challenging situation you have encountered at work so far? How did you deal with it? One of the most challenging phase of my professional life was when I first started working in the family businesses back in 2012. My degree in painting, I think, wasn’t received too well as people didn’t take studies in the Arts too seriously. I think people at work would have had a very different perception of me had I graduated with a degree in Engineering or Finance. That perception, however, did not demotivate

me and I worked very hard to learn and understand the business and its processes. I finally achieved the genuine respect I was looking for. Painting is not about connecting brush with canvas to create an image. It is the thinking process a painter embodies that is of great use for any type of business. At the end of the day, I know exactly who my detractors are and I have my own way of dealing with them. Who inspires you? I recently watched a documentary about Walt Disney. It inspired me greatly. Walt Disney was one of the most passionate entrepreneurs in the world, ever. He had a great vision that was beyond anyone’s imagination at the time, and he fought against all odds when no one believed in it, to create history. He drove innovation to feed his vision and touched the hearts of people of every age, across the world. What is your leadership mantra? The ability to create more leaders is the mark of a true leader. How do you define success? Contentment. We understand you intend to foray into the digital world soon. The scope of going digital lies in my social impact startup Caring with Colour- A Manasi Kirloskar Initiative. We want to use technology to improve learning outcomes for students, use it for assessing students and for training teachers at Government Schools. Has technology changed the rules of entrepreneurship? I do not think that it has changed the rules of entrepreneurship in terms of what it takes to be an entrepreneur but it definitely has increased the scope of work and reach. The opportunity to invent new markets and create new social paradigms definitely has expanded. Do you still find the time to study Art and painting? I paint during the weekends and try to get in as much of drawing in my little drawing book as I can while I travel. Painting is not only time consuming but also emotionally taxing and it is difficult to find consistent time for it. But I am using and exploring the Arts to its fullest capacity to create pedagogy for schools. That is very fulfilling.

The newer world With digital currency proving to be the newest fad in the financial world, it is time to analyse the practicality of the changed scenario and its feasability going forward By Rajmohan Krishnan

54

Millionaireasia India

March – april 2018

O

ver the last year, there has been a frenzy around the prospect of investing into cryptocurrencies and digital investments. People have been mortgaging their homes to buy Bitcoins- a series of ones and zeroes, which clearly have no physical presence. The year 2017 saw the Bitcoin soar from $1000 to $19000 at the close of the year. It is not just Bitcoins but also other digital currencies and digital assets that have been the focal point of discussions globally. On the one hand, while an increasing number of online retailers are accepting digital currencies, many governments have maintained differing positions on the subject. While governments such as Saudi Arabia adopt a laissez faire approach to Bitcoins, other countries such as South Korea and China are banning the cryptocurrency, terming it an illegal tender. In the light of the current cryptocurrency situation, it is worthwhile to pause and ponder on the mechanics of investing into these instruments and exploring if it does really make for a wise investment. Digital currencies or virtual currencies, are unregulated and often secured by cryptography and taking the form of store of value and used as a means of paying for goods and services. Some of the commonly known virtual currencies, Bitcoin, Ether and Ripple are issued and controlled by their developers. Contrary to common belief, not all virtual currencies are cryptocurrencies since not all use cryptography. Digital currency users work on a peer to peer network to execute direct transactions; each transaction typically documented in a blockchain for that virtual currency. The blockchain operates as a database of all transactions entered in by all users. The use of virtual currencies does not require user identity authentication, and hence all transactions entered in a blockchain are anonymous. There is immense ease of transacting in these currencies, as these are freely tradeable online or over virtual currency exchanges, and dedicated self-service kiosks in exchange of regulated currencies such as the dollar or in exchange of another virtual currency, let’s say - bitcoins in Exchange for Ether.

Phenomenal Returns Digital currencies are appreciating at a stupendous rate. The Bitcoin has returned 35,971.51% gains on an investment made in 2013 and Ethereum rallied 8,500% in 2017. The combined market cap of the total cryptocurrency market appreciated 2,800% last year. Un-correlated assets Since digital assets are not correlated with other assets, any movement in the prices of other currencies and assets have no impact on them. This is especially significant during global events such as the Brexit, EU crisis and so on, when fiat currencies came under pressure. However, the cryptocurrency landscape has only been on a run-up during these phases. Store of value Bitcoins and other crypto assets are fixed in supply and cannot be increased in quantity. This ensures that the value doesn’t depreciate. Ease of transaction Since cryptocurrencies are not correlated or linked to any

But is the picture as rosy as it looks? To get complete clarity, it is worthwhile to understand the potential downsides of investing into virtual currencies. Online Users Since the users of cryptocurrency do not have a physical presence, there is a huge risk of fraud since their authenticity cannot be ascertained. Also, since the jurisdictions in which the users operate may be different, it becomes increasingly difficult to recover the invested monies. Track Record Since users of digital currency are anonymous, their track record cannot be established and hence, the credibility is in question. Liquidity Liquidity of digital currency is always uncertain, since the number of active buyers and sellers in the marketplace may not be enough. In case of no secondary market for a digital currency, illiquidity is a major issue.

Volatility and lack of transparency These investments are extremely volatile. Last year, the value of Bitcoin went from $1000 to about $19,000 before dropping to $13,000 at the end of the year. These are highly speculative investments and extremely opaque due to non- availability of publicly available information.

illegal activities. Even though as an investor, one might buy the currency for pure investment purpose, they can always come under the lens of enforcement agencies if the funds are used for any illicit purpose. The transactions in case of virtual currencies are anonymous, exacerbating the problem.

As a Family Office Advisor, I would recommend that investors need to access their choice of investment for certain key qualities. The main parameters I would be looking for include: a) Clean b) Patient c) Quiet d) Simple To Manage e) Well Planned and; f) Must contribute to leaving behind a better world While digital investments do provide stellar returns, they do not possess any of the aforementioned characteristics of a wise investment option. Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing As Warren Buffett, the guru of investing says about Since the identity of the users is not established in case of digital cryptocurrency: “Stay away from it. It’s a mirage, basically”. assets, the funds invested are prone to misuse and funding of Security Risk Digital currencies are highly prone to security risks as these are not always encrypted or the users may not have taken suitable security measures. Tokyo-based cryptocurrency exchange Coincheck was hacked in what is believed to be the largest exchange theft that wiped off as much as approximately $530 million in value. Frauds and scams also are a huge risk in cases of the use of the currency to make purchases.

An imminent investment Knowing fully well the fact that health is the pivot around which other aspects of life revolve, it would be worthwhile to set aside some part of your finances for the sake of health insurance, which is also an effective tax saving tool

iew health as an investment and never as an expense, goes the age-old dictum. For us, health is a broader word in its holistic sense; it embraces not just the physical state but the psychological wellbeing as well. A healthy individual has greater productivity and a profound life as well. Many of us may have different ideas of investing in our health. While all these investments may be very important and desirable for remaining healthy but there is something that is equally important which only a few believe in; and that is investing in health insurance. Most hesitate while purchasing insurance, primarily due to the perception that if no claim is made in that financial year, then the money is wasted. Despite numerous direct benefits, many people still

refrain from buying a health cover. Firstly, individuals fail to understand that health insurance can be very helpful during sudden medical emergencies. Secondly, most of them are unaware of the benefits health insurance promises and people in their late 30s and early 40s do not consider health insurance as they are in their pink of health. It is important to start investing early as a policy purchased at an earlier phase in life would go a long way to serve a person in the twilight period. However, apart from surmounting the difficulties arising out of increasing healthcare costs, health insurance acts as an efficient tax saving tool as well. For example, one can avail tax benefits on the premium paid under Section 80D for health insurance which effectively

reduces the cost of insurance covers, leaving one with more money to invest, save or even spend on necessary things. In the event of an admissible claim, customer will be eligible to full sum insured and thus obliterating the concept of loss of premium, if any. Conditions for tax deduction on health insurance A health insurance, besides protecting one against medical problems as well as critical illnesses which involves huge spends, is also one of the best options available for investment in the market today. A policy holder can avail a deduction of `25,000 to 60,000 annually on the health insurance premium which covers themselves, their spouse, and dependent children. The limit goes up, in case the insured is 60 years or above. One can also save on income tax based on expenses incurred for preventive

The fact is that a health insurance policy offers many benefits throughout an individual’s life-cycle health check-ups. Moreover, a deduction of up to `35,000 is allowed for medical treatment and preventive health check-up of parents who are senior citizens. Also, as proposed in the new 2018 budget, if you have a multi-year single premium policy, then you are eligible for a proportionate deduction of the entire premium over multiple years. This mean, if you have paid `40,000 for a 2 year policy, the deduction you can claim is `20,000 each year.

In a nutshell The fact is that a health insurance policy offers many benefits throughout an individual’s life-cycle. Buying a health insurance plan is critical as it ensures quality medical care for one’s family especially at a time when the cost of hospitalisation has become very expensive. As a principle, a health insurance plan reduces the financial burden. In India, there are deductions allowed under various sections of the IT Act. Hence tax saving is an essential part of financial planning which –if done smartly – can lead to a financially liberating life. A health insurance plan can virtually prevent you from being bankrupt by those hefty hospital bills or medical emergencies. In effect, these give you enough peace of mind regarding two important aspects in life – the financial well-being of your family and their health. Thus, one must see health insurance as an essential investment option than just a tool to save taxes.

The Unapologetic Note Self-expression forms the core of Shaze’s brand philosophy and its new fragrance is the perfect companion for women that are unafraid to be themselves

I

t’s not just the mood; it is also about being true to one’s personality. Staying true to its philosophy of more than, Shazé presents a new fragrance for women that is not classified as just sweet or feminine or refreshing. It has the right notes for those who love to be unapologetic for being themselves. A perfect blend of invigorating woody aromas with a dash of fruits, spices and musk, the fragrance is an expression of ideas that society has traditionally judged. Good to be Bad is the dare with which she writes her own story; it is her inherent personal style that encompasses a fierce independent streak. The fashion-aware woman of the modern world knows what she wants. She does not let society define her ways. This eau de parfum lets a woman be her seductive yet charming self. It is that fragrance which lets her wear her inner playful temptress with ease. The distinct notes of the perfume work to engage romance and femininity with an infusion of modern sensuality to create a lasting impression. The name of the perfume is inspired by the attitude to look beyond what is termed as “good” by society. It is the faith that asserting her bold choices makes her more than a “good” woman. The silver cap, representing the devil, is a keepsake. Traditionally, the devil has been looked upon as someone who doesn’t fit in society. The devil is one who is not afraid of going against the norms; the devil is an idea which negates the rules to define a free-spirited will to carve its own way. The exclusive cap articulates this attitude with a design inspired by the woman herself. It is a reminder that it’s “good to be bad” in a world that demands constant apologies for everything unconventional.

Modelled in a fashion that every aspect of the car, from design to performance and comfort delivers an exceptional drive experience, the dream machine offers peerless repose. craftsmanship, attention to detail, documented dependability and long-term quality. The LS500h takes the interpretation of Lexus unique L-finesse design language to an unprecedented level of elegance. The bold design of this vehicle means that the roominess of a traditional three-box design comes with all the appeal of a four-door coupe, housing a six-light cabin. Peak performance begins with an all new ultra-rigid Global Architecture - Luxury (GA-L) platform, which provides the framework for precision handling. The only long wheel base model in the portfolio, the LS500h sports a new multi-link air suspension system.

Lexus’ technological innovations are inspired by boundless imagination but anchored in a human-centric approach to functionality. This is realised in the LS500h, inspired by the carmaker’s Formula One technology and powered by a 3.5L V6 petrol engine combined with a 310.8kV Lithium ion battery, delivering 15.38 km/litre in a BS6 compliant vehicle. The world’s first multi-stage hybrid system offers exhilarating performance and greater efficiency with perfect amalgamation of the electric motor and a simulated 10-speed automatic transmission that enables precise shifts. The LS has advanced electronic controls to bring Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) to an even higher level. This new sophisticated VDIM system integrates and controls six different vehicle dynamic movements. Technological excellence has also been extended to the entertainment features of the LS500h. Time spent in traffic will no longer be lamented, thanks to the entertainment options of the vehicle, led by a 23-speaker Mark Levinson Quantum Logic Immersion (QLI) Reference Sound System, which delivers near live performance quality audio. “For those who have arrived in life, the Lexus LS500h has now arrived in India. From the first impression, a striking view of the iconic spindle grille incorporating 5032 individual grid facets, the LS500h keeps elevating the standards of a luxury sedan. March – April 2018

I

n probably one of the most interesting scenes from P J Hogan’s Confessions of a Shopaholic, Luke Brandon’s modest editor Hugh Dancy surprises Isla Fisher’s Rebecca Bloomwood with his style transformation for a red-carpet charity event. The thrifty young man, mostly seen in plaid trousers and baggy fleece shirts at work picks a sharp dinner jacket, a crisp white shirt and fitted black trousers from haute labels and mentions that he is aware how good clothes make a strong impact. Clothes do make a man. In an industry where the spotlight is often on the dreamy ball gown or the luxurious sari, there are those celebrated designers who earn their bread crafting the perfect tuxedos, the streamlined pants and the sharpest shirt. Their energies are trained at making menswear fabulous yet comfortable so that the decision-maker in the boardroom feels smart and confident when he calls those important shots to seal the deal. There is a thing about formal wear that even men can’t ignore. And some seriously good shirts. Says Akshay Narvekar, owner of the Bombay Shirt Company (specialised in custom-made bespoke shirts) that set up shop in New York last November, “Wearing a well-fitted, well-constructed shirt gives the wearer an immeasurable level of confidence. How you feel internally is then reflected externally. A crisp shirt with very few or almost no stretch lines talks aloud about the personality of a person showing how organised or sophisticated they are in their thought processes. Real luxury is in a tailored apparel. It takes time but it’s bespoke.” The young entrepreneur, who launched BSC out of his own love for custom-made shirts opines that the two main considerations while crafting a shirt are the fabric and the collar construction. “A great shirt is really a sum of all the many parts, but the fabric and collar are probably the most important. Certain fabrics like

We have always believed that a well-constructed shirt provides the wearer with the confidence and presence that a tee-shirt rarely can. A good shirt must fit immaculately and not pull across either the shoulders or waist. The collar must sit perfectly, too.

royal oxfords, dobby and houndstooth are perfect for work wear while poplins, satins, denims are better choices for casual shirts. Perfect collars make or break personalities so one needs to be extremely cautious while selecting the collar and the contrasts,” he explains. Noted menswear designer Sahil Aneja speaks about the collar as well. “A shirt should have a neat ironed collar, possibly a button down to keep the collar in place throughout the day. The most important aspect of the shirt would be the fit. If the wearer is comfortable in their clothes then it reflects on the wearer’s behaviour in a positive way,” say Aneja who is all set to launch his latest collection called Error, which means a mistake or a glitch. The construction of the shirt is such that it implies simplicity, avers Aneja. Apart from being sophisticated, the silhouette is very versatile which complements all body shapes. Probably the reason why it is a garment the stylish man takes so much care to pick and choose.

March – April 2018

Even though it has a versatile silhouette, it has to cut to perfection to enhance one’s shoulder structure. “Wearing a well-fit shirt gives the man a neat look and a confident aura,” quips the designer. Confidence. A quality that can make or mar a man’s persona. A great shirt goes a long way in adding to that. Says David Abraham of Abraham & Thakore, “We have always believed that a well-constructed shirt provides the wearer with the confidence and presence that a tee-shirt rarely can. A good shirt must fit immaculately and not pull across either the shoulders or waist. The collar must sit perfectly, too.” The only Asian menswear to snap up the International Woolmark Prize, Suket Dhir, is however, of the opinion that any great garment is the one that enhances the wearer’s personality. “It has to be about the wearer and not just about the shirt but both have to come together brilliantly. It has to be absolutely comfortable and look dignified at the same time. And here, superlative fit is the key,”

Dhir says. The designer who has floored the global audience with his sharp yet quirky menswear ever since he bagged the coveted award in 2016, lays equal emphasis on the five Fs when it comes to a good shirt. “Feel, fabric, finish, fit and fashion are all equally important aspects. If you dim down either, the shirt would fall flat. A stylish man is the one who is not willing to compromise on any one of these qualities either in the boardroom where he makes million-dollar deals or while lounging with his friends,” he elaborates. A good shirt, therefore, is the one which is comfortable and doesn’t bog the man down. It fits like a dream. Admits menswear expert Pawan Sachdeva, “A shirt is good only if it’s easy to wear and makes one feel relaxed. One wrong stitch or cut can ruin the fit of shirt. This is where bespoke products rule. It is the amalgamation of fabulous fit, good fabric as well as collar and cuff details. If all this is taken care of, the shirt is on point,” affirms the fashion designer.

The magnificent St. Regis Mumbai was playing host to the launch of Millionaireasia India’s first cover of 2018 which was shot in the breathtaking locales of Monaco. To add to this visual delight was the fact that the cover featured none other than the game-changing icon of Indian cinema, Karan Johar, a man who has rescripted the rules of both filmmaking and the business of cinema ever since he announced his arrival with the boxoffice trouncing romance, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. It was, in other words, an evening that would keep acquiring brilliant dimensions as it progressed. The venue dazzled as it awaited the arrival of the galaxy of stars that were invited for the event.
