Custom Flooring. Integrated Millwork. Bespoke Furniture.
MADERA is a design firm that utilizes the medium of wood for innovation and creative expression. We design and make the highest quality wood flooring, millwork, and furniture. Our primary mission is to bring wood’s natural beauty into the spaces our clients inhabit. All wood exhibits natural beauty, but not all wood is of equal caliber. We go to great lengths to bring out the best qualities in each floorboard, focusing on the sourcing, selection, drying, and milling of lumber. Our curated collections of finishes are designed to highlight the wood’s inherent beauty and not obscure it under layers of stain and texture. Simply put, we have a deep connection to wood and wish to share our love of this natural material with clients and architects alike.
CUSTOM FLOORING | INTEGRATED MILLWORK | BESPOKE FURNITURETrees are some of the oldest living organisms on earth and are essential to all life. A tree’s roots provide anchorage and extract water and minerals from the soil, which feed branches and leaves through the trunk. Around 60% of the total mass of a tree is its trunk. The trunk supports the branches, which in turn support its leaves. A tree’s bark is a waterproof skin that protects the inner cells and is perforated with tiny pores to bring oxygen to living cells beneath. Leaves, containing chlorophyll, absorb light energy from the sun and carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Oxygen is then released back into the atmosphere for all living organisms to use. Seeds are found within nuts, fruits and berries to support the next generation of growth. Every single cell contributes in producing our unique and varied wood surfaces, bringing character and warmth.
“Trees are poems the earth writes upon the sky.”
— Khalil Gibran
The Stockholm Collection offers a range of clean, light, and modern floors inspired by Scandinavian design on European Oak. A bright and airy color palette, minimal texture, long lengths, and a wide range of plank widths makes this collection a perennial classic and a favorite among architects and designers who seek simple and timeless materials.
The MADERA aesthetic is rooted in Scandinavian design, literally. Two of MADERA’s founding partners, brothers Daniel and Mikael, were born in Sweden and our Stockholm collection is an ode to their early childhood memories.
We aim for simple beauty in our products, and believe that clean, pure design can lead us to a greater understanding of the natural world and our relationship to it.
The finest wood products require the finest lumber and craftsmanship, period. We have spent the past decade searching for the highest quality wood in the most impressive dimensions. In doing so, we have developed partnerships with some of the most knowledgeable, talented, and sustainable-minded craftspeople in the world. Our in-house design and production teams work closely with these foresters, sawmills, fabricators, and finishers to realize the MADERA vision, which is rooted in a deep reverence for wood in all its forms. We are a team of experts from the design, construction, and manufacturing industries who value functional simplicity, natural materials, and honest design.
New York, NY. Taking up an entire floor in a landmark early 20th-century garment building in Union Square, this loft renovation by Worrell Yeung re-imagines living spaces while removing perimeter walls and obstructions to highlight the space’s fourteen windows. Our 12” wide Northern White Oak floors were installed on a bias to take advantage of the loft’s unique shape and were hand-finished on-site to match the architect’s design intent.
Ingrained in the MADERA ethos is a deep reverence for wood. The human connection to wood and trees has no rival when it comes to the materials that surround us on a daily basis. There are thousands of species of trees in the world and although each species offers a unique opportunity for human expression we have chosen to focus on five species due to their structural characteristics, workability, and aesthetic nature. Sustainability concerns, such as the overall health of each species and its effect on the greater environment, are also factored into our decision. We are always exploring new materials, but our respect for nature and dedication to craft are constant.
“There must be a union between the spirit in wood and the spirit in man.”
— George Nakashima
Developed as an ode to “the process,” our Atelier Collection explores various textures, colors, and finishing techniques used to highlight the wood’s natural beauty, while adding just enough je ne sais quoi to create truly unique hardwood floors on European Oak. Combining dry aging, surface planing and variable brushing, the texture of Atelier is as much a part of the finish as the color. Starting with a slate of fifty unique color combinations, we spent several months eliminating, then adjusting, until we had seven amazing floors. Atelier is manufactured and hand finished in Europe.
Bel Air, CA. Occupying a steep and narrow site in Bel Air, this home by Plus Development Group is deceptively expansive yet decidedly intimate. The atypical building form follows the natural contours of the site. What results is an organic floor plan that allows the exterior spaces to flow seamlessly into the building, filling the living areas with light and air. Select grade Black Walnut flooring in our Juniper finish creates a warm glow while maintaining the richness of walnut. Architect: Plus Development Group Product: Terra Collection | Juniper
We are a team of experts from the design, construction, and manufacturing industries. We focus our expertise and passion on designing and creating the highest quality wood floors and surfaces in the world. We are enthusiasts, artists, explorers, academics, farmers, philosophers, laborers, craftsmen, risk takers, co-conspirators, partners, brothers, and friends. We have stories to tell, roads to travel, wood to work and the outside to bring in. MADERA is more than the wood we walk on. We are a creative tribe of people who design and create wood surfaces for the spaces that fill our lives. We are people who love ideas that unite both people and beautiful places alike. We love a good adventure and are proud to call New York and Los Angeles home.
“Information about art and nature feels like the best stuff to have, and if you have it, it is powerful and excellent to pass it on.”
— Jenny SlateThe Terra Collection showcases the highest level of hardwood flooring craft in North America. Each floor is fabricated and finished in the United States with a focus on exceptional quality wood, precision milling, custom grading and high quality, natural finishing. The Terra Collection highlights the natural beauty of the wood, pure and simple. Relying on quality finishing techniques and a less-is-more approach Terra is our most honest, least tampered with collection of hardwood floors. Northern White Oak, Black Walnut and White Ash are all featured here. Unrefined, undisturbed, unblemished.
GRADE We disagree with the notion that character should be seen as an imperfection. On the contrary, we see the beauty in character and aim to celebrate it in our products. Characteristics such as knots, sapwood, or flecking (medullary rays) are natural to wood. Therefore, we don’t refer to the character as a “defect.” Wood is perfectly imperfect! Every MADERA wood floor is a unique expression of nature made from living material. Live grade is dynamic and full of character. Striking heart oak from the tree’s core, handsome knots and rift and quartered edges make this floor a dynamic expression of the mighty tree itself.
We designed the Volant Collection to celebrate the exceptional dimensions and natural splendor of European Oak, made from Quercus Robur, the dominant oak species in Northern Europe. Crafted in a multi-generational mill, these finishes are our love letter to the ethereal beauty of flight. Volant is at its best when specified in extraordinarily wide and long floorboards and millwork. Combining one hundred years of experience in milling and craftsmanship with state-of-the-art equipment and meticulous finishing techniques results in a beautiful range of wood products.
VOLANT COLLECTION Natural oxidized oil in a soft matte finish. Medium to deep brushed texture with occasional unfilled knots and cracks in natural and live grades. Larger cracks and knots are filled with a dark slate epoxy fill. Thrasher is a fumed finish which results in significant color variation. Planks are available up to 20 inches wide and 35 feet long.
NEW YORK, NY. Although MADERA was born in Brooklyn, our showroom is located in the heart of the Flatiron district in Manhattan. All three floors of the showroom space were designed in collaboration between MADERA + Métier and showcase our flooring and millwork options like never before. Situated in a landmarked building (circa 1843) in the “Ladies’ Mile Historic District”, 909 Broadway features a historic storefront and façade. The entire ground floor is clad in various width planks of European Oak and finished in Thrasher and Blue Jay natural oils. Walking up to the second floor, you will be immersed in beautiful Douglas Fir from the Pacific Northwest. Wide plank (13 inches to be exact!) Douglas Fir floor planks sit beneath solid Douglas Fir benches and custom designed modular tables complete the room. Finally, the third-floor office space showcases the possibility of patterns with a classic French Oak Chevron. It was our intent to design and curate a different kind of showroom experience, a space that showcases our ethos; hand-crafted, high quality luxury design that is both thoughtful and timeless.
