ITH Wimbledon now in full swing and serving up some top tennis action, people can take advantage of a new community tennis scheme organised by Southend-on-Sea Borough Council. The first of its kind in Essex, it is offering households as much outdoor tennis as they like at Chalkwell and Priory Parks for just £27.50 a year. The parks now offer seven brand new outdoor, floodlit courts between them, allowing tennis all year round. With a grant of £350,000 from the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA), the hard courts at

these locations have been upgraded, rebuilt and resurfaced. To register for a key fob, which allows access to the courts, go online at southendparkstennis.com to apply or telephone 01702 61300 and book a court for the start of a fabulous tennis summer. Wimbledon always causes a sudden urge by many to pick up a racket. The LTA has been arranging a number of Great British Tennis Weekends (GBTW). Two successful events have already taken place at clubs around the county, with the next one on August 1-2.

Courts at local clubs will be offering free tennis over the weekend. Clubs play a huge role in providing regular tennis opportunities so the GBTW events have also been a great way of highlighting their offers. People can take part in sessions including Cardio Tennis, Highland Spring Mini Tennis and coaching, as part of the LTA and Tennis Foundation’s drive to get more people playing the game and hopefully find the next Andy Murray or Heather Watson. Supporting the drive is Judy Murray, mum of former Wimbledon champ

Andy and doubles player Jamie. Judy is a tennis coach and team captain of the British Fed Cup. There’s plenty of celebrity support too. Sports presenter Gabby Logan and former tennis pro Annabel Croft are both Ambassadors for GBTW. Annabel said: “Tennis is unique in that people keep playing right into their nineties, which can’t be said for many sports. It been such a big part of my life, so the chance to encourage others to start playing is really important to me.’’ For more details on GBTW on August 1-2 visit www.lta.org.uk/gbtw.

However, check regularly for staying safe in the sun isn’t to moles be ignored whether on your holiday or at home in the UK. Seven people die from skin cancer every day in the UK and over 100,000 new cases are diagnosed each year. The British Skin Foundation has therefore launched Molly the Mole, to help encourage people to check their moles regularly. Molly was designed for the British Skin Foundation by Martha & Hepsie who wanted to show their support for skin cancer research and awareness after their cousin was diagnosed with a melanoma. You can buy a Molly the Mole wristband designed by Martha & Hepsie for just £2 and help to spread the skin check message with your friends and family.

Tasty offering for Southend Seafront A FORMER sun shelter on Southend seafront has been transformed into a stunning new restaurant that has its official opening on Saturday, July 4. Oyster Creek Kitchen, a 100 cover restaurant and bar, is the result of a £500k regeneration of the distinctive, curved building on Western Esplanade. Owner, Antonia Waite, wanted to bring some informality back to the town’s dining scene and promises to bring great food in a laid-back atmosphere to the seafront. “My family is well known for owning Tomassi’s on the High Street, but this is my first venture as a restauranteur in my own right,” says Antonia. “I am very excited about Oyster Creek Kitchen as I’ve been invovled in every aspect of its creation, from choosing the decor, finding a

SSEX has its fair share of record breakers, including Paul Kelly of Kellys Turkeys who broke the record for the fastest time to carve a turkey (3 mins 19.47 seconds) and Thurrock Marching Brass who made the record for the longest line of fanfare trumpeters (valve trumpets) on September 7, 2014 with 105 players at Aveley Football Stadium. Now you can help Essex Libraries get into the Guinness World Record books, by supporting their Summer Reading Challenge. The annual UK-wide Summer Reading Challenge aims to keep the country’s children reading during the lengthy summer holidays. Last year, more than 42,800 children in Essex took part. This year’s theme is Record Breakers and Essex Libraries wants as many pledges of support as possible to set a new world record for the most number of pledges received for a reading campaign and to contribute to an Essex record. The Summer Reading Challenge will launch with the record breaking attempt on July 11. All libraries will be accepting pledges for the Essex record with 20 libraries designated

official ‘pledge centres’ contributing to the national Guinness World Record attempt. Children will be asked to pledge to visit their local library and read over the summer, while adults and volunteers are being asked to pledge to support children to read. The Summer Reading Challenge is produced by The Reading Agency in association with the Guinness World Records and delivered by libraries, bringing together fact and fiction and helping young readers to discover some wonderful and truly amazing records from around the world. Children will need to read six books of their choice and collect stickers in six catetories to collect their medals. Councillor Roger Hirst, Essex County Council Cabinet Member for Customer Services, Libraries, Planning and the Environment said: “Getting more children to read for pleasure during the summer holidays will be a fantastic achievement. This record attempt will be used to highlight the importance of reading for pleasure as well as the importance of libraries in communities. “I want to see Essex playing its part in creating this new world record.”

AVE you got some old clothes lurking in the back of your wardrobe? If so, why not bring them along to Colchester Farmers’ Market which takes place on the first Friday morning of each month and swap them? This great idea involves visiting the market with an item that can be swapped for something else. Even if you don’t have anything to swap, simply make a small donation to charity and you can still take something home. Jean Routledge, a volunteer for

WasteBusters, a voluntary group that encourage recycling and discourage waste has been pioneering the swap events. She said: “I started the ‘Why waste it? Swap it’ event to appeal to market regulars, as well as bring in new customers. The events are always a huge success and visitors enjoy rummaging around to find something of interest.” Swapping rather than binning reduces our carbon footprint and buying reusable goods reuses the use of packaging and transportation. Events like these also help local communities, community organisations and members of the public. Would you be interested in developing these events? WasteBusters who operate across all of Essex, is looking for new volunteers. Get involved by visiting www.recycleforessex. com/wastebustervolunteers.aspx.

New campaign supports food establishments to improve quality of their food

C

OUNCILS throughout Essex have launched a campaign this week to support food establishments to take small steps to improve the quality of their food. Funded by the Department of Health, it is called Tuck-In and by taking the pledge, a food business has considered the fats, salts and sugars in the foods they serve and has made a commitment to make changes to reduce them and make sure appropriate portion sizes are on offer. This includes reducing fats in food frying, by frying food at the correct temperature and letting the food drain properly. Other measures include reducing the amount of sugar and salt used in cooking, ensuring water and low/no sugar drinks are available, offering grilled foods instead of fried, increasing the amount of vegetables and fruit available on the menu and providing packets of salt instead of free-running salt cellars. Bosher Ali from the Indian Chef, in Billericay said: “We feel this project is really beneficial to the local community and we want to do our bit and get involved.” In Brentwood, the first to sign up was Brentwood Leisure Centre Cafe who made the pledge after completing nutritional training. In preparation they have pledged

to use rapeseed/liquid oil, reduce salt, reduce sugar, use wholegrain and wholemeal bread, use lower fat products and use healthier fillings. The cafe’s catering manager Alisa Roberts said: “The scheme will be good for the cafe as it fits in well with the leisure centre. Customers won’t notice a change in taste, but those who want to eat healthier will now have more options to choose from.

NEWS ARTIST OF THE MONTH

A musical journey of Love, Life and Lyricality Phoenix FM presenter Michelle Ward chats to Essex singer/songwriter Helen Connelly

B

UBBLY and beautifully voiced Helen Connelly from Colchester, has only been singing for three years but has a mature, soulful, jazzy, strong and note perfect vocal. Nothing is over sung, it’s a pure joy to listen to her voice. I caught up with Helen to chat more about her love of singing and amazing talent: You have an impressive vocal and song writing ability, how did you discover your talent? I have always sung and written songs. Ever since I was a young child, I had a big interest in music and I enjoyed poetry. I always knew that it was very significant to me, it just wasn’t until a little later in my life, for various reasons, that I decided to really pursue it as a career. I went to an open mic gig about three years ago and sang a song by Duffy called ‘Oh Boy’ acappella and the place went silent. I guess from there on, I knew it was something I wanted to continue with and I started writing and gigging.

Amazingly talented, Helen Connelly

Winner, Drapers Academy pupil Sophie Ferrier with Paul Gayler MBE

The brand new EP ‘Love, Life and Lyricality, tell us about it? I wanted to record a few of the songs I’d written in the last few years, which I had been gigging with. The title ‘Love, Life and Lyricality’ happened because I wanted to pick a title, which pretty much reflected what the songs on the EP were about. You work alongside a fantastic guitarist Crazz, how did you two meet up? Crazz and I came across each other through Bandmix! It’s an online networking platform for musicians. I came to Crazz with the songs I had written and he would work out a composition on guitar with me. He’s an awesome guitarist, I’m very lucky to have met him and to have worked with him. How do you start the song writing process? The writing process for me can really vary and can be very random! I’ve found most of my songs are born out of melodies and lyrics, which have randomly popped in to my head. Sometimes at the most inconvenient times or when I’m busy doing something else or on auto-pilot. Sometimes I can write songs in one go (Brushing Off The Dust, Easy To Love and Live A Lie, which are all on my EP are prime examples of that). However, other songs, I’ve sometimes written a little bit and come back to later. I

don’t play an instrument, so there’s always an element of co-writing for the songs to develop with a composition behind them. What is the best thing about performing live? The best thing for me about performing live is when you have a great venue with good sound and a great audience, who are really listening and enjoying what you’re doing. The nerves and adrenaline you feel when you get up on stage used to scare me a bit but I’m learning to trust and love it, it’s not as scary as it used to be. Nerves are a good thing. There’s nothing better than when you get off stage buzzing and people from the audience make the effort to come tell you how much they enjoyed your performance. It’s a great feeling! What are your plans for 2015? Probably the top priority for me this year is studio time to record more songs which I’ve written. I’m planning on releasing more material this year and next. I want to focus on my writing and who I am as an artist. I’m also up for collaborating too! Gigging is important to me, so once I feel ready with the new material, I intend to gig pretty extensively, hopefully all over the UK and who knows even further afield! Where can we catch you live? Upcoming gigs are July 4 – The Bull Pub, Crouch Street Colchester, 7.30pm; July 12 – Wivenhoe Fete, Colchester, 1.30pm; July 18 – Eight Ash Green Music Festival, Colchester, Main Stage 2.30pm; July 26 – Jimmys Farm Sausage & Beer Festival, Acoustic Stage 1pm, Suffolk. JIMMY’s Farm Sausage & Beer Festival returns for another award-winning year on July 2526 (it was finalist in the UK Festival Awards in 2014 for ‘Best Small Festival’, ‘Best Family Festival’ and ‘Best Grass Roots Festival and also won silver in the Festival Kidz Awards).

T

HE festival, held at the TV presenter, and farmer’s rare breed, free-range 170-acre farm in Suffolk, combines the best of music and food in two packed days. There’s live music, kids entertainment, cookery demos from top chefs and the best local food and drink producers on hand to ensure visitors are well-fed and watered. Jimmy talks exclusively to Made in Essex about the hotly anticipated event: How did the idea for the festival come about? The Sausage & Beer Festival started about 10 years ago and was born from a celebration of two major British institutions: sausages and beer! It seemed like a great way to showcase the award-winning sausages we make on the farm too. It started out as a small affair but, now 10 years on, the festival attracts thousands of people from all over the UK as well as some great entertainment, from cookery demonstrations and Sausage Making Workshops to children’s entertainment and a brilliant outdoor theatre.

What are the festival highlights this year? This year, we have performances from bands, Toploader, Athlete, Chaz & Dave, The Shires and Polar Collective and cooking demonstrations from Gennaro Contaldo, Marcus Bean, DJ BBQ, Dan Doherty and Bake Off finalist, Richard Burr. And for kids, CBeebies presenters, Justin Fletcher and Mr Bloom are opening the Main Stage and our Theatre in the Forest will be showing their production of Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream. And of course, our Sausage Making Workshops! Since seeing you create Jimmy’s Farm as documented in the popular BBC2 TV series way back in 2002,

have things developed how you planned? Yes and no! I always hoped that we would achieve our dream of producing high quality, free range pork, lamb and turkey. But I never imagined that the Farm would become a popular visitor’s attraction hosting weddings and events throughout the year. It’s a great balance and I feel that we are really listening to our customers and giving them what they want! How would you sum up the Farm? It’s a modern traditional open farm that is heavily based around the family. We make sure that there is something for everyone. Grandparents can admire our gardens and take a walk through

the grounds while the children can play on the bouncy castle or meet the animals. We also have the ‘Theatre in the Forest’ productions throughout the summer, with the Red Rose Chain theatre company as well as our restaurant, field kitchen, farm shop and butchery. We make sure that all generations can enjoy themselves. Do you have any other events planned for 2015? The Sausage & Beer Festival is July 25 and 26 July and the Red Rose Chain theatre company are showing productions of Midsummer Night’s Dream throughout the summer in our woodland theatre! We also host regular quiz nights and farmers markets throughout the year.

The festival runs from Saturday July 25 at 11am to Sunday July 26 at 11pm. Tickets: Adult (aged 16+) £17.50 per day, Child (under 16’s) £10 per day, Family (2 adults and 2 children) £50 per day. Jimmy’s Farm, Pannington Hall Lane, Ipswich Suffolk. For more details visit: jimmysfarm. com or call 01473 604206.

WIN A FAMILY TICKET WORTH £50 We have one family ticket for Jimmy’s Sausage and Beer Festival to giveaway (2 adults and 2 children) for either the Saturday July 25 or Sunday July 26. To win answer the following question: Which year did Jimmy’s Farm first appear on our television screens as a documentary series? Send your answer to competitions@ madeinessex.net the first correct answer received will be contacted as our winner!

Travel Europe

Europe is blessed with many beaches of coffee-table book beauty, but it’s the sheer variety of them that sets it apart. From Caribbean-quality strips of sand and glinting water to storm-sculpted collisions of land and sea, few parts of the world offer beach lovers such breadth of choice.

Life’s a BEACH!

W

HETHER you’re looking for somewhere to surf (or learn to surf), an all-rounder to please the whole family, a moody backdrop for a solo stroll, or just a to-die-for spot to lay your towel, you’ll find it somewhere in Lonely Planet’s selection of Europe’s best beaches for 2015.

1. Jaz Beach, Montenegro

If you’re looking for solitude, it shouldn’t be your first choice – but if you like your beach holidays to come with a little adventure, a spot of culture and plenty of partying, broad and sandy Jaz Beach on Montenegro’s gorgeous Adriatic coast is the place to be. This summer, Jaz will host the second Sea Dance Festival (seadancefestival.me/en – July 15-18), whose inaugural edition was voted the Best European MediumSized Festival at the European Festival Awards 2014. Earning bonus points for location, Jaz is just outside Budva, a miniDubrovnik with a charming Old Town and a citadel that turns into a stage for the Theatre City openair performances throughout July (gradteatar.com). For adrenaline junkies, there’s more fun to be had: day-trip options from Budva range from rafting the Tara Canyon to paragliding over Mt Lovćen.

2. Peniche, Portugal

The port of Peniche and its eponymous beach is renowned among surfers – and this year it hosts one of only two European stops of the World Surfing League (October 20-31 – worldsurfleague. com). But this rugged headland, which juts into the Atlantic about 60 miles northwest of Lisbon, is worth a visit even if you’re not bringing a board. While seasoned surfers and bodyboarders head for the west coast, and in particular the ‘supertubos’ – large, tube-shaped waves – off Medão Grande Beach, the sheltered bays of neighbouring Baleal are ideal for beginners,

History buffs will love Peniche’s old town centre (which includes historic churches and Peniche Fort, built in the 16th and 17th centuries, used in the 20th century to detain political prisoners, and now a museum), while divers can catch a boat to the clear waters around the Ilhas Berlengas nature reserve just off the coast.

historic Bonifacio, is no exception; careful management ensures this is a sumptuous spot despite the footfall, a perfect horseshoe of sand enclosing a shallow, limpid blue bay set like a jewel amid hills of reddish rocks and dusty maquis. Rondinara’s sheltered location means it’s free of all but the most child-friendly waves, another boon for families staying at the well-organised campsite nearby (camping-rondinara.com). The beach has plenty of parking for day-trippers and a restaurant on the sand serves up food and drink between May and September.

it’s one of a series of beaches on the Golfo di Orosei’s dramatic coastline. It’s not your classic poster beach with silky soft sand and a palmfringed backdrop; rather, its appeal lies in the drama of its setting and its turquoise waters. There are only two ways to reach it: by boat or on foot. Most people cruise in from Cala Gonone, but for a truly memorable experience, you can trek down an old mule tack from the Golgo plateau some 400m above. And if that’s not climb enough, once you make it down you can join the local climbers and pit yourself against the beach’s rock spire, the 148m-high Aguglia.

other-worldly feel, underpinned by local folklore. Look west to spot the Trolls of Vik (Reynisdrangur), craggy stacks of basalt said to be the petrified remains of three Icelandic trolls. At low tide, explore caves composed of cooled lava; legend has it their geometric columns once sheltered mythical creatures. Keep your eyes peeled for puffins nestled in the nearby cliffs – the area is a haven for seabirds. Vik village and Reynisfjara are easily accessible from the main ring road and make a great final pit stop before heading back to Reykjavík. Stay at Icelandair Hotel Vík and spend an extra day touring nearby Mýrdalsjökull glacier.

3. Rondinara Beach, Corsica, France

Let’s dispense with the idea that Rondinara is in any sense undiscovered. In high season (July and August), a flotilla of fancy yachts drops anchor here, while the powdery sand disappears beneath a mass of bronzed French bodies. Corsica guards its gorgeous beaches jealously, though – and rightly so. Rondinara, which lies at the end of a nondescript road off the N198 midway between glamorous Porto Vecchio and

4. Cale Goloritzé, Sardinia, Italy

Beach perfection comes in many forms in Sardinia. But for sheer drop-dead beauty, few places can rival Cala Goloritzé; a tiny inlet of bone-white pebbles overshadowed by towering, macchia-clad rocks,

The effort of reaching Cala Goloritzé is half the fun. Image by elisalocci/iStock/Getty Images.

5. Vik Beach, Iceland

With black sands, mists and tales of trolls and sea monsters, Vik Beach (Reynisfjara in Icelandic) is the antithesis of its Caribbean counterparts. Found at Iceland’s southernmost point – the wettest place in the country – this windbeaten volcanic beach has a gothic,

6. Bantham Beach, England, UK

The south west of England is spoiled for rugged beaches and some of the country’s best – Woolacombe, Croyde Bay and Saunton Sands among them – are found in North Devon. But they have a rival to the south... Bantham

Luggage Look down on dreamy Voutoumi while sipping an ice-cold Mythos. Image by NetfallsRemy Musser/Shutterstock.

First things first: for all the efforts of the Gulf Stream, the waters off northern Scotland are very cold indeed. To swim here, either hardiness or a wet suit will be involved. But beaches aren’t just about sunbathing. They’re about the dramatic meeting point of land and water, and Sandwood Bay, at Scotland’s remote northwestern tip, is a magnificent case in point. Getting there is half the fun: the beach is a four-mile walk from the nearest road, the path winding through moorland and grassy sand dunes. When the view of the mile-long beach, overlooked by the limestone sea stack of Am Buachaille, finally opens up it feels like ample reward. This sweep of sand has cliffs around it, a freshwater loch at its back and faces on to waters that stretch to the Arctic. Tall tales of ghosts, shipwrecks and mermaids add garnish, but most people find a tramp around this beautiful place poetic enough.

Get packing

Cala Macarella is one of the hidden delights of Menorca. Image by tagstiles.com S.Gruene/Shutterstock. and easily reached by hydrofoil to Paxi then taxi boat, this tiny island is a walkable four-by-three kilometres and home to a yearround population of... 20. But what a beauty it is: cloaked in vines, olives, orchards and wildflowers, scalloped with pearly beaches, and lapped by a sea that fades from turquoise to indigo. Nowhere will leave you itching to leap in like Voutoumi, an arc of ivory-white pebbles and sand, where you can lounge in seclusion before trudging up 200 steps to a taverna for calamari and an ice-cold Mythos overlooking the beach.

10. Curonian Spit, Lithuania

Beach, which lies in the South Hams, is a true all-rounder: surfers love its reliable waves; families come for the winning combination of sand, dunes and rock pools; and walkers admire its drama as they pass by along the South West Coast Path (southwestcoastpath.com). For added interest, visitors can hop over to neighbouring Bigbury Bay and visit the elegant art deco Burgh Island Hotel; cut off from the mainland at high tide, this glamorous throwback once hosted the likes of Agatha Christie, Noel Coward, and Prince Edward and Wallis Simpson. Bantham forms part of an estate owned by the same family for a century until it was sold for £11m last year. The new owner, who beat competition from the National Trust to buy it, has promised to be a similarly conscientious custodian. Let’s hope so.

7. Sandwood Bay, Scotland, UK

Beaches don’t come much more dramatic than Scotland’s remote Sandwood bay. Image by richsouthwales/Shutterstock.

8. Cala Macarella, Menorca, Spain

The Balearics often get a rough ride, brushed aside by independent travellers as a fast-track to package holiday hell. But Menorca – the shy little sister of Mallorca – is not only a cracking deal for families, with its gently shelving beaches, low-key resorts and waters made for snorkelling, it also hides some of Europe’s finest beaches. One such secret is Cala Macarella, a horseshoe-shaped cove in the island’s south-western crook, where cliffs draped in pines and holm oaks enclose flour-white sands. Get there bright and early, or linger to see day fade into a pinktinged sunset, to experience it at its silent best. What else? A photogenic walk over the cliffs brings you to the tinier, quieter and just as lovely Cala Macarelleta, where nudists top up their all-over tans.

Dividing the Baltic Sea from the Curonian Lagoon that stretches from Lithuania into Russia, this sliver of land is one endless expanse of beach. Mile upon mile of fine white sand awaits those looking for a real escape. This landscape itself, however, is not so sedate. Lush forests and grasslands attract an array of winged wildlife, earning the Curonian Spit a reputation as a birdwatcher’s heaven. Amid this terrain you can marvel at the spectacle of Europe’s largest moving sand dunes. For superb views over this Unesco World Heritage site, hike to the summit of the Parnidis Dune, a great spot to catch the last golden rays of the sun before it dips gently below the horizon. Thanks to Lithuania’s inclusion in the eurozone earlier this year, it is easier than ever to travel around the region. Tread carefully – metaphorically and literally – if you do go, though: responsible tourism holds out the hope of safeguarding this fragile ecosystem; anything else will only speed up its destruction. Great Days Out

Museum marvels

Tar Tunnel

Set either side of the River Severn in the stunning Ironbridge Gorge, the ten fascinating Ironbridge Gorge Museums, near Telford, Shropshire offer a great day out that is both fun and informative.

Coalport China Museum and Caughley china as well as decorative tiles and clay tobacco pipes, all now housed in their original works. Marvel at magnificent china in Coalport China Museum and walk through period room settings adorned with decorative tiles at Jackfield Tile Museum, also home to the world class John Scott collection of beautiful tiles and panels. Broseley Pipeworks is a wonderfully preserved time capsule, which has changed little since the workers left in the 1950s. A more unusual attraction is the Tar Tunnel – originally intended to provide access between the Blists Hill mines and River Severn during their heyday, it was found to be a source of natural bitumen. Today you can don a hard hat, enter the

P

ERHAPS the best place to start a journey back in time is the Museum of the Gorge that explains the area’s importance and features an impressive 40ft model of the valley on 12 August 1796 when William of Orange visited the region. Next may be the Museum of Iron, which interprets the beginnings of the iron industry and its development through the Victorian era. While there take a look at the Darby Houses, former homes of the ironmasters and Abraham Darby’s original furnace, where the Industrial Revolution began. Alongside the Museum of Iron is Enginuity, designed to inspire and capture the imagination of everyone intrigued by what’s around them whatever their age. Here you can play with the huge interactive exhibits, test your reaction against the speed of a robot, generate power from water or pull a 10 ton locomotive by hand.

Recreated Victorian Town

Travel back over 100 years to experience the sights, sounds, smells and tastes of life in earlier

times at Blists Hill Victorian Town. Begin your experience by exchanging modern money in the town’s bank for pre-decimal token coins, which can be spent in the authentic shops, workshops and pub. Listen to conversations between costume-clad characters going about their daily business, see how medicines and pills were prepared in the pharmacy and hear gruesome tales surrounding the dentist’s chair and doctor’s surgery. The Ironbridge Gorge was also home to the beautiful Coalport

900-metre tunnel and see the tar seeping slowly from the rock. The finale of a trip to the Gorge must be a stroll along the banks of the River Severn and across the world’s first Iron Bridge, here you can imagine what life was like around 300 years ago when industrial development began. A great value Annual Passport Ticket allowing unlimited entry into all ten Ironbridge Gorge Museums costs £27.95 per adult, £21.50 for seniors, £16.95 for children under 18, £68 for a family of two adults and all their children and £50 for a family with one adult; under 5s free (terms and conditions apply); Passports can also be bought online in advance saving 10% and individual entry tickets are available at each museum. Activities and workshops vary day-to-day and some carry an extra charge. Jackfield Tile Museum runs hands-on workshops during school holidays when families can try activities such as tile decorating. Enginuity also runs interactive sessions looking at how things are made and ‘work’. For further information, contact the Ironbridge Tourist Information Centre 01952 433 424 or visit www. ironbridge.org.uk. The Gorge is easily reached via the M6 and M54 motorways exiting at Telford (M54 junction 4 or 6). Other things to see and do in the region can be found on www.visitironbridge.co.uk.

Where to stay: The four star Telford Hotel and Golf Resort at Madeley is a very short drive from Blists Hill Victorian Town and within easy reach of all the other museums. Rooms from £97 per night (two sharing), B&B. To book visit www.qhotels.co.uk or call 01952 429977. Or stay in the heart of Telford near the Town Park and new Southwater dining and leisure centre for evening entertainment, where the Holiday Inn Telford/Ironbridge is offering rooms from £70 per night (two sharing), B&B to book call 01952 527000 or visit www.holidayinntelford.com.

July

Soak up the Summer Sun and these gardening tips for July from the Royal Horticultural Society and National Garden Gift Vouchers

J

ULY is the month for you to get out and enjoy your garden whether it’s an open area in the country or a more compact urban space. The lazy, hazy days of summer are best spent enjoying the plants that you have lovingly nurtured and cared for over the past months that are now in full flower. You do need to keep an eye on watering this month though to make sure your garden doesn’t suffer from dehydration. Conserve water and help plants in the summer by moving pots out of full sun into the shade where possible. Some tips for good watering include using water-retaining gel in containers (which you can get at your local garden centre), water the area directly above the roots and a good watering less frequently is better for than watering little and often. Gardening myth of the month is that drought tolerant plants don’t need watering – which of course is not necessarily the case. Even if it’s a cactus or bamboo, plants need water to grow, especially until their roots get established deep into the soil. After that, drought-tolerant plants don’t need too much watering, except during a really prolonged dry

period when they need water as much as any other plant. A number of Salvia varieties will tolerate dry conditions and several like to dry out in between waterings. A popular choice for landscapers and gardeners alike, Salvias are long flowering with the potential to put on a show from June through to October. Not only are they loved for their colour and structure, but they are a firm favourite of bees and butterflies – and of BBC Gardener’s World presenter Pippa Greenwood. “I’m a great fan of the hardier salvias. Even before the buds open they are attractive plants with erect stems, often with aromatic foliage and forming a sort of clump of exclamation marks. Then when the flowers appear, usually in shades of violet, purple, pink or white, they can bring any sunny border to life instantly. Provide these plants with a well-drained but humus-rich soil and plenty of sun and they are easy to grow...seriously

rewarding and....simply gorgeous!” Although July is a time to put your feet up and relax in the garden there are still a few tasks to keep you busy. •P lace conservatory plants outside now that it is warm. •W ater tubs and new plants if dry, but be water-wise. •D eadhead plants to ensure continuous flowering. •S upport tall plants and flowers with stakes. •P ick courgettes before they become marrows and harvest other fruit and veg. •C lear algae, blanket weeds and debris from ponds, and keep them topped up •O rder catalogues for next year’s .springflowering bulbs. •G ive the lawn a summer feed, especially if not given a spring feed. •K eep on top of weeding. •K eep an eye out for pests ... they don’t have summer holidays!

On a plate… with

Ian Samuels

Chef Ian Samuels knows a few things about cooking for dinner parties with his successful Come Dine With You business and over 25 years experience as a chef working with some of the best chefs in the UK, Marco Pierre White, Gary Rhodes, Steven Bull and Richard Neat to name a few.

W

HETHER you want private chef hire for a special occasion, personal catering for a dinner party or want to learn a few tricks of the culinary trade with some cookery lessons and classes, every eventuality is covered by Come Dine With You (www.comedinewithyou.com). As Ian Samuels says, “Why dine out when you can enjoy exquisite food in your own home?

Chicken liver pate Ingredients: 1 tbsp olive oil 2 shallots, finely chopped 3 sprigs thyme, leaves only 1 garlic clove, crushed pinch freshly grated nutmeg ½ tsp ground allspice sea salt and freshly ground black pepper 400g/14oz chicken livers, trimmed of any membrane and gristle, roughly chopped 50ml/2fl oz brandy 100ml/3½fl oz double cream 120g/4½oz unsalted butter, cubed For the butter finish 80g/3oz unsalted butter ½ orange, zest only 2 sprigs thyme, leaves only To serve: slices toasted bread (white or brown)

Method 1. Heat the oil in a frying pan over a medium heat. Add the shallots and thyme and cook for until soft. Add the garlic, spices, pinch of salt and pepper to taste and cook for a further two minutes 2. Soak chicken livers in milk over night or 3 hours to remove the impurities, softens flavour and tenderises the liver. Remove from milk and add the chicken livers to the pan and fry for 6-8 minutes, or until just cooked through. To test, remove a piece of liver from the pan and cut it open; it should be moist and juices run clear (a little tinge of pink is fine). Remove from the heat and place in food processor. Blend until smooth. 3. Add the brandy to the pan to deglaze, then add the cream and bring to a simmer. Cook for two minutes, stirring up any of the residue from the pan. Pour into the food processor and blend again until smooth. With the motor running, gradually add the cubed butter and blend until smooth. 4. Pass the mixture through a fine sieve into a bowl and then divide between ramekins. Smooth the tops down by banging the bottom of the ramekins against the work surface, then place in the fridge while you prepare the butter finish. 5. Melt the butter in a saucepan with the ground nutmeg salt and pour over the pâtés. Refrigerate for two hours before serving with sliced white or brown bread rolled flat and put under the grill till golden brown.

“Take the stress out of entertaining your guests and let your private chef do the hard work. “Our fabulous food is prepared and cooked by one of our professional chefs at a venue of choice.” With that in mind, we have asked Ian to give us three exquisite recipes that will go down a treat at home. 12 things you need to know as a first-time landlord

Don’t jump into property investment without reading Tilly Rubens’s top tips what is included in their management agreement.

5 THINK THROUGH WHAT YOU WILL ALLOW YOUR TENANT TO DO (OR NOT DO) IN THE PROPERTY Some tenants may want to bring a pet with them to the property or run a small business from home. If you are worried about a pet causing damage to the property, then you need to put a clause into the agreement prohibiting animals or stating one named animal will be allowed. If you do not want the tenant smoking inside the property, your tenancy agreement must clearly say so.

6 TENANCY DEPOSIT LEGISLATION If you take a deposit from a tenant, you must ensure that it complies with the tenancy deposit legislation. Otherwise, you could end up being ordered by a court to pay the tenant compensation and have difficulty evicting them at the end of the tenancy. As a landlord, you must ensure that you put the tenant’s deposit into a government-backed tenancy deposit scheme within 30 days of receiving the deposit. You must also ensure you provide the tenant with specified information about the scheme (called prescribed information).

7 INVENTORY CHECK-IN

T

aking the first steps into the world of rented property can be a daunting task for the novice landlord. There seems to be so much bureaucracy and regulations to comply with and that is before you have even found a tenant. Our no-nonsense guide to renting out a property should ease you over the first hurdle and take away some of the stresses of starting out as a landlord.

1 HOW WILL I FIND MY TENANTS? You can either find tenants yourself by advertising in the local paper or by word of mouth. Alternatively, you can pay a fee to an estate or letting agent to find the tenants, carry out reference and financial checks, and deal with the deposit and other tenancy-related issues. The first option is obviously cheaper but you may prefer to rely on the experience of a letting agency if you are a first-time landlord.

2 WHAT TYPE OF TENANCY? Nearly all new tenancies in the private rented sector will be what are called Assured Shorthold Tenancy agreements, which are often for an initial fixed term of six or 12 months. Once the first six or 12 months have expired, the tenant can remain in occupation in the property on a month-by-month basis, under the same tenancy agreement, but it is now called a periodic agreement.

3 DO I NEED A SOLICITOR TO DRAW UP MY TENANCY AGGREEMENT? This depends on the complexity of the agreement and whether or not you use a letting agency. There are several websites that allow you to download a pro-forma agreement, or you can ask a solicitor to draw one up to cover your specific requirements. Check if the solicitor will be charging a fixed-fee

for the agreement or charging on an hourly basis. If you are using a letting agent to find tenants and manage the property for you, they will have their own standard agreement.

4 DO I WANT TO MANAGE THE PROPERTY MYSELF OR ASK AN ESTATE AGENT/LETTING AGENCY TO DO IT? You need to carefully consider whether you have the time to manage the property yourself and deal with issues such as the boiler breaking down or a tenant losing his key. If you live nearby, or are retired, you may prefer to deal with these day-to-day issues yourself, as it will certainly be cheaper. However, remember that dealing with maintenance issues can be time-consuming. The alternative is to pay an estate agent or letting company to manage the property for you. Check the level of their fees and

The condition that a property is left in at the end of the tenancy can be one of the main areas of contention between landlords and tenants. Compile a detailed inventory list and report on the state of the property before the tenancy starts, which is agreed and signed by both landlord and tenant. This can save some of the headache further down the line. Also take photographs showing the condition of the property before your tenant moves in. Most letting agents offer an inventory check-in service.

8 GAS SAFETY/OTHER REGULATIONS Remember that you are responsible for ensuring a gas safety check is carried out on all appliances and installations in the property, by a Corgi-registered gas engineer, once a year. A copy of the gas safety certificate needs to be given to the tenant. Your property will also need to comply with all other relevant standards, for example for furniture and fittings, and regulations/ licensing if it is let as a house in multiple-occupation (HMO).

9 REPAIRS OBLIGATIONS Also remember that you will be responsible for keeping the property in a good state of repair. There will be obligations about this contained in your tenancy agreement and also implied by law. If you fail to keep the property in a good state, your tenant can take you to court and the court can order you to carry out these repairs and also pay your tenant compensation.

10 RENT ISSUES Most rent is paid monthly in advance by standing order on a specific date and many landlords will in addition ask for a couple of months rent to be paid before the tenancy starts. You may also want to consider having a guarantor for the tenant, especially if they are a student or cannot provide good financial references. This is a person (often a parent if the tenant is young) who will agree to pay the rent in the event that the tenant defaults.

11 CHECK-OUT The check-out procedure at the end of the tenancy is a very important part of the process. Make sure you have clearly agreed a time and date for your tenant to move out. You will then need to carry out a comprehensive inventory check-out report. If you intend to make deductions from the tenant’s deposit, you must follow the procedure as set down in your particular tenancy deposit scheme and the relevant legislation.

12 WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THINGS GO WRONG? Unfortunately, even with the best planning in the world, things still go wrong. Your tenant may stop paying the rent or a neighbour may complain they are holding noisy parties. Make sure all communications between you and your tenant are in writing, be it by email or letter, and keep copies. You may be able to ask your tenant to leave the property in certain circumstances, e.g. if he has broken the terms of the agreement or you have given him the correct notice. You will only be entitled to bring court proceedings to evict your tenant if you have served the proper possession notice first. Do remember that landlord and tenant law can be complicated and each case is different. If you have specific queries about a landlord and tenant matter you may need to consult a specialist solicitor.

We’re not talking about pride in your work. We’re talking about being proud to work for a company that stands for something. Something you feel passionately about. We feel pride when our employees of the month are given a fabulous weekend in Monte Carlo. When we feel like part of an amazing success story at the monthly company meeting. When we double in size in the space of a year. When we set ourselves a target of raising over £10K for charity in a year… and then smash that target.

We spoke to Jonathan to find out a little more about Oh…My!

and we have a baby girl who is 8months. I studied at Chigwell School and went to Birmingham University.

Tell us a bit about you? Jonathan Swead, 36, born and raised in Chigwell. I’m married

Have you always worked in fashion? No, I originally started off as an Art Director in advertising coming up with advert ideas for TV and radio, winning a Design & Art Directors award whilst at University and a prestigious Cannes Lion award which is the Oscars for advertising. I then decided to follow my passion for fashion and worked for a boutique fashion public relations company. After a few years in this industry I was then drawn in to my Father’s fashion and manufacturing business, and I

decided to make a career move in to the rag trade! How did your idea for what is a very chic kids collection come about? During my years in the fashion business, I noticed a gap in the market for a luxury British kidswear brand that set itself apart from the monotony of the high street. So, after much research,

my design partner and I wanted to create a quintessential English brand with an eccentric twist. The styles combine innovative design with emphasis on quality, craftsmanship, and a sensitive attention to detail. Designs are inspired by womenswear trends, whilst still providing an entirely age appropriate collection for children. We wanted parents to feel proud to put their daughters in our clothes - we would never design

In the grounds of the eighteenth century estate, the Bowood Hotel and Spa is a contemporary addition that fits elegantly into its historic setting. Inside it combines a modern palette of greys and jewel tones with the grandeur of huge swathes of fabric and enormous pelmets, and everything feels very open – even standard rooms have high ceilings, and lots of natural light. The spa at Bowood Hotel and Spa is all about understated elegance. There is a sauna and steam room, a café in the reception area, and four treatment rooms. There is also a pool, Jacuzzi and a gym almost entirely constructed of glass, which means that you swim, soak or cycle into the verdant green of the eighteen hole golf course outside. All treatments use Sundari products created by Christy Turlington, and start with a Dosha consultation form to ascertain which personality type you are – Vata, Pitta or Katha – which essentially has to do with whether you have dry skin, oily skin or combination skin. The products used are ascertained from there, and the theme continues throughout your day. Weekend Spa Day Includes a fruit platter

and glass of fizz on arrival at the spa, a fluffy white robe and slippers, full use of the spa facilities, a light lunch and choice of two 30 minute treatments. from £120 per person

St Pierre, A Marriott Hotel and Country Club, Wales

Formerly a 14th Century manor house, St. Pierre remains a picture-perfect reminder of historic village idylls surrounded by 400 acres of parkland. There are 148 rooms featuring contemporary design and enjoying views across the gardens. Leisure is built into St. Pierre Hotel’s surrounding Monmouthshire landscape thanks to two golf courses and parkland which also accommodates a jogging and fitness trail amongst its features. Additionally, the hotel offers tennis courts, a gym, pool, sauna, whirlpool and a steam room. The location’s beauty would be lost on guests without a little time to contemplate it and relax in the process, so the spa is an equally important asset providing fitness counselling alongside a collection of treatments and therapies courtesy of Decléor, Murad and St Tropez products. What are your future plans with the brand? We will have a new strategy for the next season with the hiring of former Harrods Buyer Eleni Koureas-Cornell as our brand consultant. Eleni is growing our wholseale arm within Europe, USA, Middle East. We have also signed to an agent to manage our UK and Irish accounts. Because Oh… My! is a niche premium brand and designed specifically to run against the current UK kidswear trend, we will only target stockists that have a good fit. Once we have a following and built up a brand heritage, we hope to sell our clothes in a number of select retailers across the UK but also worldwide. Plus we also have plans to introduce accessories (bags, sunglasses, scarves, umbrellas). We have strong connections in the Asia market and we are gaining connections and licencing deals to grow even more. • Instagram: ohmykidswear • Twitter: ohmykidswear • Website: www.ohmykidswear.com •C urrent Stockists – Harvey Nichols, Knightsbridge

Cocktail O’Clock

Whisk yourself away on holiday with this gorgeous Cocktail inspired collection from All That Jazz UK. Available in four bright and beautiful colours indulge in some nail therapy this season!

A

DD a dash of lime with the citrus bright of The Margarita, or a twist of old school class with the perfectly pink Jack Rose. Add a hint of girly sophistication with the cranberry crush of The Cosmopolitan, or a fresh minty burst of the marvellous Mojito. Whether you are lying on a beach, at a summer shindig or with your girlfriends make sure your nails are cocktail-ready! All That Jazz UK is a trend focussed nail brand that is fronted by nail industry icon Jazz Smedley, featuring over 80 gorgeous shades; with colours ranging from dazzling glitters, to neon bright’s and barely there nudes. The brand launches four gorgeous collections

annually that will keep your fingertips on the pulse of fashion. Jazz is the daughter of Jason and Georgie, founders of Hornchurch-based Nail Harmony. She has worked across several London Fashion Weeks and has worked with celebrities such as Fleur East, Ella Henderson and Little Mix. Jazz launched her own nail and manicure range at the age of 16. Two years on and this clever lady is bringing out 4-6 collections a year with the latest being the cocktail collection. What inspired you to launch your own nail and manicure range? My parents launched Gelish in the UK, and we realised that colours and manicure products to go alongside were missing. So they gave me

the privilege of having it named after me and looking after the brand! What gives you the ideas for each collection? I always look on Pinterest, Instagram and magazines for current nail trends to give the customers exactly what they want. What are you favourite colours? Personally, I love pinks and nudes. But then, nothing beats a classic red nail. It changes depending on my mood and outfit! Do you keep your nails in good order? I make sure I use cuticle oil twice a day - at least! This keeps the flexibility in the nails, to avoid those painful breakages! How did the idea materialise for the Cocktail Collection? What’s better than a cocktail after a hard day?! A girl in our office always lives by the rule “It’s 5 o’clock somewhere” so I guess this collection is for her! Haha. Who are your favourite celebrities and have any tweeted about wearing any of your collections? Fashion wise, I love Lana Del Rey. She always looks the part. I’ve known X-Factor runner-up Fleur East for about three years now, so she loves Gelish and All That Jazz! What are your plans for the future - will you branch into other areas of beauty other than nails? Perhaps in the future, but for now, there’s just too much to focus on with the brand as it is! Tell us a bit about Gelish? Jason and Georgie were really excited to market Gelish. Without a doubt it was going to take the UK by storm and they had so

many great ideas for marketing campaigns, slogans and brand awareness. The brand is meticulous, everything has been tried and tested to the finest detail. Harmony believe in supplying only the highest standard of products.. The brand has grown from two employees and no salons to a household name. This owed to the quality of the products and the work ethic within the Harmony Team. In the twenty years Jason & Georgie have been working in the industry there is no other brand that has expanded and taken over as quickly as Nail Harmony UK. Nail Harmony UK have approximately 45,000 salons and nail technicians registered to the website. Nail Harmony UK have the following celebrities who are fans of Gelish: • Tulisa • Emeli Sande • Little Mix • Kimberley Walsh • Jessie Ware • Two Shoes • Amy Childs The Harmony UK team has been on the following nail gigs: • The Clothes Show Live • Hard Rock Concert • The X Factor • Britain’s Got Talent • Harley Street Beauty Nail Harmony UK are always at the forefront of Innovative Technology. They were the first to introduce the LED Lamps. With continued growth they are always looking to be one step ahead. What does the future hold for Nail Harmony UK? Jason and Georgie feel that they are just at the tip of the Gelish Iceberg after continued year on year growth, constant celebrity attraction, TV programs and an ever-growing Harmony Army Team. If Nail Harmony UK can do this in two years, the future is seems to be immeasurable for this ever growing company! But it doesn’t have to be this way,” she explains. “Never before has it been as exciting in the cruelty free beauty free industry as there are so many new animal friendly products coming onto the market. Remember always to look for the certified marks which are either Leaping Bunny, BUAV or Vegan Society to guarantee cruelty free products,” adds Victoria. Russell Grant’s Weekly Horoscopes ARIES March 21st - April 20th

Your thoughts move seamlessly between the realms of head and heart. Make some important decisions about a romantic relationship. Committing to a loyal and loving partner will be scary, but rewarding. It’s a good time to confront any fears about intimacy. Forming a strong bond with someone who uplifts and supports you will be empowering. If you’re thinking of making a bold move, this would be a great time to take the bull by the horns and see where destiny takes you.

Keep your plans secret for the time being. This will give you an opportunity to practice and prepare. The last thing you need is for a rival to get wind of your goals and steal your thunder. Practicing discretion will put you in a good position to change jobs, get a promotion or win a contest. Don’t be afraid to promote your accomplishments and show off your talent. You must believe in your abilities to achieve success. Let the world know exactly what you can do.

LIBRA September 24th - October 23rd

Reading and studying will give the intellectual stimulation you crave. You’ve been blessed with a sharp intellect and you like to keep your mind busy. If there’s anything you can’t stand, it’s a stultifying, numbing routine. Fortunately, an exciting new opportunity is on the horizon. Being put in charge of a group fund will be rewarding. You’ll enjoy finding ways to make everyone’s money stretch as far as it can possibly go. You can be trusted to be uber-resourceful.

CAPRICORN December 22nd - January 20th

TAURUS April 21st - May 21st

LEO July 24th - August 23rd

Friends can be incredibly helpful so don’t hesitate to call on them if you are grappling with a persistent problem. Someone with great connections could set you up with a job interview or date. If you need a letter of recommendation, ask an influential relative or neighbour to write you one. You prefer getting by on your own steam, but that’s not always possible. Don’t worry. You’ll soon have an opportunity to repay all the help you receive. Be patient and gracious.

SCORPIO October 24th - November 22nd

It’s important for you to know where you stand financially especially what your stake is in a saving fund or pension plan. If you don’t know how to read the statements that arrive so regularly you should learn how. You will feel empowered when you are able to make good choices about your fiscal future. Instead of casting your lot with a large group of people, you may prefer to maintain an individual account. You’ve always had good instincts about money. Trust them.

AQUARIUS January 21st - February 19th

GEMINI May 22nd - June 21st

VIRGO August 24th - September 23rd

SAGITTARIUS November 23rd - December 21st PISCES February 20th - March 20th

You have the ability to make extra money to make some home improvements. Take this opportunity to upgrade appliances, make repairs or buy some beautiful furniture. You may spend more money than you expected, but you’ll be very happy with the results. There’s a good chance you’ll be inspired to throw a party once all the improvements are made. Don’t forget to invite some newcomers to your community. This will pave the way for a lasting friendship. You’ll easily find a receptive audience for your ideas. Lately, you’ve felt like your suggestions have fallen on deaf ears, but things are changing now, when people are eager to make some wide ranging changes. Doing things the old way isn’t working any longer. Once these improvements are put in place everybody will begin to feel the benefit. Work will be performed quickly, saving everyone time, money and aggravation. You might be given praise, respect or even a bonus for your work.

CANCER June 22nd - July 23rd

You will get fame and acclaim for your prize winning ideas. When you’re faced with a challenge, you don’t complain, you find ways to meet it and beat it. People are impressed by your problem solving abilities. Be sure to emphasise this talent when interviewing for jobs. A company that is looking for self directed employees will be impressed by your accomplishments. This is your big chance to use your talents where you can work independently and take the initiative.

Working alongside a partner or as one of a team will be rewarding. Although you’re tempted to buy some expensive luxuries others will help you make wiser choices. You should treat yourself from time to time, but you must make sure that when you splash out on something special that it will give you lasting pleasure. That way, this special purchase will always have the power to cheer you up. Instead of buying status symbols, put your money toward a long distance trip.

You’ll be busy with work. Your progress will be impressive because your mind is operating with a clinical, analytical precision. It’s easy for you to spot small mistakes. T

HE remains of a 12th Century chapel dedicated to St Thomas a Beckett in the very heart of Brentwood bear testimony to the town’s origins as a stopping point on the pilgrimage trail to Canterbury and its current prosperity. In the Middle Ages, Essex was The Ingatestone Pedallers on largely a forest and Brentwood’s one of their cycle rides name is derived from ‘Burnt Wood,’ possibly referring to charcoal burning, then an important part of Medieval life. After Henry III granted the burgeoning town a royal charter to hold markets, Brentwood developed into a centre for trade and commerce. Today, its bustling High Street and surrounding streets reflects that this is still a well-to-do place. Chic boutiques and popular restaurants, along with a vibrant club scene show that Brentwood is an exciting place to visit. If you’re a fan of alpine sports, the flat topography of Essex may not strike you as the perfect place for a spot of snowboarding or skiing, especially in the height of summer but over at Brentwood Park, you can get your snowsports kicks all year round. Set in over fifty acres of beautiful woodland, the centre offers facilities and tuition for boarders and skiers of all abilities. Next door is a fantastic kart track and the park’s

amenities also offer a golfdriving range and a Chinese restaurant. Cyclists will enjoy the area around Brentwood, as the urban roads of the town centre rapidly give way to leafy lanes and beautiful countryside. Villages such as Ongar, Ingatestone and Mountnessing are all easily reached by bike, with attractive cafes and pubs lining the routes, making for perfect coffee stops. The Ingatestone Pedallers a social cycling group make the most of the delightful scenery on their monthly rides. In 2014, Essex hosted one of the Tour de France’s Grand Depart stages and you can traverse the same tarmac graced by the world’s best riders. Brentwood’s theatre is renowned for the quality of its productions and varied programme of shows and events, while the large Brentwood Centre plays host to an eclectic mix of sports events, festivals and gigs by some of the UK’s most celebrated artists. For a far more unusual nighttime experience, head out to the

Secret Nuclear Bunker at Kelvedon Hatch and have a spooktastic time looking for paranormal activity in the labyrinthine corridors of the facility built to house the British government in case of a nuclear strike during the Cold War era. Other must see places include 13th Century, Marygreen Manor. A charming half-timbered hotel and restaurant that was once the home of Henry Roper, who served in the court of Henry VIII’s wife, Catherine of Aragon. It is said that Henry was regular visitor, whilst Samuel Pepys mentions Marygreen in one of his famous diaries. The neo-Classical cathedral, just off the High Street, is a striking expression of the Catholic faith in Essex. Designed by Sir Quinlan Terry, the church was influenced by the early Italian Renaissance and the English Baroque style so evocatively realised by Sir Christopher Wren. No premium for performance

UDI’S A7 Sportback is surely one of the handsomest big cars on the road. Looking at it, you could be thinking: ‘‘I bet that costs a lot to run.’’ In fact, not that much. In spite of being capable of reaching 62 mph in only 7.3 seconds, day-to-day fuel consumption won’t hurt too much and the emission figure of 124 g/km means the annual outlay on road tax is a modest £120. Of course, you have to get past the purchase price; A7 Sportbacks start at £45,875. The majority of buyers wil do the deposit/monthly payment thing. These PCPs are fast becoming the most popular method of getting ownership of a new car. The test car, an Ultra S-line model, had options on board that brought the total up to £58,300 including delivery and first registration. S line gives you 20-inch wheels and ‘sweeping’ function indicators front and back; also, there are LED matrix headlights that automatically dip when on full beam so as not to blind oncoming drivers. Options on S line models include the choice to change from the normal sports suspension to have the normal standard settings at no cost. At that money, perfection is what should be expected. On that score, I would say Audi have nearly achieved it. My week with the car centred

TEST DRIVE Audi A7 Sportback Ultra

round a trip Germany. Just two minor quibbles came to light: on a section of the M25, a high-pitched vibration caused by the un-smooth road surface was somewhat unpleasant; and, kick-down on the S tronic automatic gear box was just a touch slow. And that sums it up. I did bump my head on the open tailgate, but that was probably my fault. In all other respects the car was excellent. Under the bonnet lies a 3-litre, six-cylinder diesel

engine with 218 PS (actually the least powerful in the A7 range). One of its features is the chunky sound you get when you put your foot down. Even with ‘only’ 218 PS, there’s plenty of urge provided by 400 Newton metres of torque which is made as available as possible by the newlydeveloped seven-speed twin clutch transmission. The car is front-wheeldrive and handles really nicely and positively. Twisty roads can be a lot of fun in

TOM SCANLAN this car and motorway miles are lapped up at a cool 1450 rpm at 70 mph. The German autobahns were so busy that there was little chance of trying the car out at much more than 100 mph, let alone seeing if I could record its official top speed of 149 mph! However, doing a ton, the Ultra was of course totally at home, completely unfussed, smooth and quiet. Powerful brakes enhance the feeling of complete confidence in the car to keep you safe in an emergency. There are, naturally, all the expected latest technology safety features included in the car’s specification. As to fuel consumption, Audi claims ‘‘up to 60.1 mpg’’ for the Ultra, which is a bit better

than saying it will actually achieve that official combined consumption figure. Depending on the type,of driving I was doing, the car’s trip computer showed around 35 mpg around town and an overall 45.5 mpg after 525 miles most of which were on the motorways. A top-to-top fill up at this point showed a figure of 45.1mpg, so well done to Audi for a reading that, in fact, may well have been more accurate than my top-up measurement. Oh, and one more little niggle: the satellite navigation had some weird moments. In Belgium it wanted to direct me off the E42 onto a far more roundabout route and the busy A4 down to Cologne suddenly didn’t exist for the sat nav which wanted my to take to the fields and perform sort of a square dance. I recall that exactly the same

thing occurred in a previous Audi visit along the same motorways last year. The inside of the A7 is very tastefully furnished and very comfortable. The driver has everything in the right place and the controls are all pleasant to use. The instruments are simple and clear, easy to read both day and night. Passengers in the back have plenty of space and some of their own heating controls. The boot is as big as you think from the outside that it’s going to be. However, when will manufacturers realise that we want a full-size spare wheel there? The A7s have a space-saver. I suppose that’s a bit better than a can of mousse and a compresser and, anyway, where do you put a dirty punctured wheel when you’ve got it off the car? Rant over. This Audi is perhaps my favourite.

New diesel for Land Cruiser T OYOTA’S mighty Land Cruiser gains a new engine this summer, ensuring the go-anywhere SUV remains one of the finest all-round propositions on the market. At the same time, equipment specifications have been upgraded and extra models have been added to the lineup. The three and five-door Land Cruiser both adopt the new 2.8-litre D-4D unit, which replaces the current 3.0-litre engine. Available to order from July 1, prices are £35,895 for the three-door and £37,695 for the five-door. The focus is on improved driveability with better torque delivery, plus lower fuel

consumption and reduced CO2 emissions. The 2,755cc, 16-valve DOHC engine produces a maximum 174bhp. Matched with the current six-speed manual transmission, it develops peak torque of 420Nm between 1,400 and 2,400rpm. A new six-speed automatic transmission benefits from control systems that help the Land Cruiser achieve improvements in fuel economy and CO2 emissions. Provisional figures show combined cycle performance at 39.2mpg and 194g/km for the five-door model. The introduction of a new powertrain is accompanied by attractive new standard equipment features.

The entry-level Active grade models now come equipped with DAB digital radio for better quality radio reception. The options list has been extended to include Toyota Touch 2 with Go, which adds intuitive and comprehensive navigation functions to the vehicle’s high-resolution, touchscreen-controlled multimedia system at £750. Customers can also specify leather seats for the vehicle. On three-door models this also includes heated front seats and leather door trims and costs £1,395, and on the five-door Active the package includes power adjustment for the front seats and triple-zone automatic air conditioning at £2,795. The Icon model also adopts DAB and the more

Better fuel economy and lower emissions for Toyota’s Land Cruiser

sophisticated Toyota Touch 2 with Go Plus, adding voice command recognition, 3D city mapping and a text-to-speech function. At the top of the range, Land Cruiser Invincible gains the same new features, plus all the elements included in the new optional Safety Pack. The new Safety Pack option

(for Active and Icon models, £2,635) equips the SUV with a wealth of features to help avoid accidents and support safer driving on and off road. They include Adaptive Cruise Control and Pre-Crash Safety system; Lane Change Assist; Rear Cross Traffic Alert; Blind Spot Monitor; and a Multi-Terrain Monitor,

which gives a 360-degree view of the vehicle’s immediate surroundings. The introduction of the new engine also heralds an increase in the Land Cruiser model range with the re-introduction of the Active grade five-door/ seven-seat version, available, with either manual or automatic transmission.

Billion mile mark for electric Tesla TESLA, manufacturer of the awardwinning Model S all-electric saloon, has announced its total vehicle fleet worldwide have driven over a billion miles. In just the three years since Model S hit the road, owners across the world have travelled the equivalent of over 4,000 trips to the moon, or almost 40,000 times around the Earth. By driving electric miles, Tesla owners have saved more than half a million tons of CO2. This month, Model S celebrated its first anniversary in the UK. Despite their recent starting point, British Model S drivers have covered 6.6 million miles which is the equivalent of over 265 times around the world and over 27 trips to the moon. A billion miles on a fleet of just under 75,000 Model S is a testament to the safety and durability of Model S and the ease of charging and driving electric vehicles. Tesla customers rely on Model S as their daily driver and for long distance road trips by charging at home or along Tesla’s worldwide Supercharger network. Since the launch of Model S in 2012, Tesla has created a charging network spanning North America, Europe and Asia that now consists of 445 Supercharger stations and thousands of Destination Charging locations, enabling fast and free long-distance charging.

Tesla will kick off this fleet milestone with the launch of the Next Billion Miles Tour which will travel around North America, Europe and Asia offering customers the opportunity to experience the exhilarating performance and handling of Model S. The Next Billion Miles Tour will visit a number of locations in the UK. To sign up for a test drive on the tour, visit http://www.teslamotors.com/ en_GB/billionmiles British Model S owners have contributed their part in the One billion miles milestone. Owners Tony and Jenny regularly travel abroad with their Model S. “For every day and long distance

driving and ownership experience, the Tesla takes first prize every time. “We’ve driven it down to the French Alps three times, and toured Scotland, Wales and Cornwall.” Owner Tom has made several trips to France in his Model S with his family: “We’ve now completed three trips to Europe in our Model S, totalling about 3,000 miles. “We’ve driven to Cannes, Brussels and most recently Paris. The Model S is a brilliant touring car.” Brian Gilmore and his family rediscovered the road trip thanks to their Model S: “We drive it most days but it really comes into its own on long road trips.”

The new BMW 3-Series

First look at new BMW 3-Series BMW took the new version of its 3-Series Saloon and Touring to Goodwood’s Moving Motor Show recently at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, offering visitors the chance to be among the first to see it ahead of its official arrival in the UK next month. Regularly among the top-selling cars in the UK and a company car staple, the BMW 3-Series has been substantially updated for 2015, with the refresh including exterior styling changes but with the focus firmly on making the driving experience more involving.

The latest iteration of the 3-Series was on display at the BMW Pavilion stand and, while it wasn’t available to test drive, visitors got a ‘sneak preview’ of the eagerly-anticipated car. As well as the new 3-Series, BMW displayed the new 2016 M6, M135i, BMW i8 and 2-Series Grand Tourer. The German marque also celebrated its twowheeled pedigree, with the BMW Power Cup K1200R, S1000RR and R50 Kaczor motorcycles running up the infamous Festival of Speed hill.

Captain Jonsson leads the way T HE Vortex Lakeside Hammers delivered three home wins on the bounce last Friday, with a comprehensive 57-35 victory over the Leicester Lions. Looking to make amends for their poor performance in Norfolk the previous evening where they lost 63-29 away at Kings Lynn Stars, skipper Andreas Jonsson immediately led the way in heat one, with Mikkel Bech, as the pair hunted down the fast gating Lions captain Jason Doyle, passing him either side on the back straight of lap three. Although the Aussie GP star fought back to second, Bech returned the favour on the last bend of the fourth lap, to give the Hammers a perfect 5-1 start. The first reserves race then saw Adam Ellis continuing his return to form with a smart gate to take the lead. Ben Morley, in at reserve for the Hammers fought past Simon Lambert, but couldn’t quite reel in Adam Roynon. Eddie Kennett, and former Hammers Skipper Davey Watt, covering for Kim Nilsson who was en-route to a GP qualifier, made simple work of heat 3,

with new Lions recruit, former Hammer Piotr Swiderski, taking third. Richard Lawson made a perfect gate in the following race, with Morley producing a neat cut back to keep Wozniak at the rear. With the Hammers 12 points to the good, the meeting took an initial swing in the Lions favour in the following race, when Ellis fell entering bend one of the second lap during a tight scrap with Worrall. In the resulting re-run, Mikkel Bech then suffered mechanical issues allowing the Lions to captialise for a 5-1 of their own. An eight point gap became six in the following race when Doyle gated ahead of Lawson, and Swiderski then muscled his way past Kennett, to give the Lions a 2-4. Order was restored in the following race however, with Jonsson passing the gating Wozniak and Walasek, before dissappearing into the distance, whilst Davey Watt fought his way past the Lions to deliver an another 5-1 heat advantage, extending the Hammers lead back to 10 points. Lawson squeezed out

Worrall on the second bend of heat 8, whilst Morley pushed the former Hammer before settling in third. The Hammers increased the Lions woes in the 9th, when Wozniak fell in a tight first bend, but with no red lights coming on, the Hammers pairing of Ellis and Bech raced off ahead of Roynan to hit the Lions with the fourth 5-1 of the evening. Leicester deployed Doyle as a tactical in a heat 10 that took two attempts to start. In the first running Worrall and Watt took a first bend tumble, resulting in an all four back. The second attempt was called back for movement on the line. In the third running, Doyle again gated and appeared to be dominating, until Watt found a perfect exit from the fourth bend on the third lap, to steam past his compatriot on the outside of the home straight. With Kennett in third, a shared 4-4 all be ended the Lions resistance. An on fire Jonsson took his third heat win in the eleventh, with Swiderski keeping Beck honest in third. The second reserves heat then produced a great race. Roynon gated, and

Andreas Jonsson was on fire for Hammers third home victory led for two laps before Morley showed his memory of the Raceway lines, to move under his fellow Redcar Bear on the third lap. In the meantime, Adam Ellis neatly moved past Lambert, to ease the Hammers into a 20 point lead. Jonsson delivered another gating masterclass in the thirteenth, as Doyle got the better of Watt. The penultimate

race saw another 5-1 to the Hammers with Lawson and Kennett easily seeing off the challenge of Wozniak and Roynon. Ahead of the nominated heat 15, co-promoter Jon Cook informed the Hammers fans that Andreas Jonsson had already committed himself to the Essex club for the 2016 season. The nominated heat 15 itself then

The 38-year-old will take the helm at the Division One champions with immediate effect, and will become the Big Cats’ fifth head coach in their 12-year history. After a college career in the USA, Londonborn Ogunjimi spent a year with the Big Cats’ old rivals London Towers before joining the original Leopards for the 1999/2000 season. Ogunjimi moved on to Newcastle Eagles before returning to the Big Cats for their final season in the BBL in 2003/4. Ogunjimi returned to Brentwood to play for the new-look Leopards midway through their debut season before helping them win the National Cup in 2005/6. He also played top division basketball at London United before coaching in the lower divisions of the National League. The new Leopards’ coach is delighted to be taking up the role, saying: “I am very happy to be able to take this opportunity to coach the Leopards basketball team this season.’’ “The Leopards organisation and its

supporters have played a very big part in my journey as a player and I am now lucky enough to be able to continue that relationship as the head coach of the team. “The team has a familiar core group of quality, hard working players that I am very excited in going to battle with to continue the winning culture of this great organisation. “I am really looking forward to the challenge!” The Big Cats’ general manager Dave Ryan was equally pleased with the club’s new acquisition, and said: “We had a lot of really strong candidates for the job, and we’d like to thank those who came to meet us. “But Steve was our unanimous choice, and we believe he can do a great job at the Leopards. “It’s a tough ask for him to take over at the reigning champions but we believe he has the presonality and ability to work with the players who won the title and take us on to greater things.’’ Ogunjimi’s first game in charge of the Division One champions will be on Friday, September 4 when Team USA Select play at the Brentwood Centre at 8pm.

came to a halt on the first bend, when Jonsson was squeezed out and hit the air fence. The second running was then halted due to an unsatisfactory start. As rain suddenly appeared, the third running saw the Lions hit the front from the gate, and take a consolation 1-5, on a night when the Hammers riding and team spirit took control from the outset.

CYCLING

Essex duo set for Tour de France CHELMSFORD cyclists Alex Dowsett and Ian Stannard are set to compete in the Tour de France, which starts on Saturday, July 4. Dowsett, 26, was named in the Spanish team Movistar’s nine-man squad for cycling’s most prestigious race. The selection caps a remarkable year for the Essex-born rider, who suffered a broken collarbone in January, forcing him to postpone his Hour Record attempt. He recovered in time to make his attempt in May, only for Sir Bradley Wiggins to break it recently. Sir Bradley Wiggins has welcomed challengers to his new record and has tipped Dowsett as the most likely man to break it. Wiggins beat Dowsett’s previous record by 1.589km with a distance of 54.526km. Stannard, 28, who finished third in the British Cycling National Championships in Lincoln on Sunday, was named in Team Sky’s line-up.

REWARDING WEEKEND Thrills as lawn bowlers

I

T WAS a fabulous weekend for Chelmsford as they emerged well from some challenging fixtures. The main features were brilliant unbeaten hundreds from Nick Prowting and Phil Arnold that secured victories over table-topping Wanstead & Snaresbrook sides. A victory last week had opened up a big gap for Wanstead & Snaresbrook at the top of the Premier League table. That gap has been much reduced now with a good performance in the field and a superb partnership between Prowting and Dan Hagen. The seconds turned in a solid performance to beat Upminster fairly comfortably. Gary Chidley (68) was the mainstay of Chelmsford’s total of 227 for nine. Upminster never really threatened to get near that and were eventually bowled out for 160. David Thrift and Vit Sapaetharan scored good half-centuries to help the third team win relatively comfortably at Hainault & Clayhall. Although there was some big hitting from the home side, they were bowled out for 185; Neal Abhyanakar and Harry Green taking four and three wickets respectively. The chase always seemed to be under control and time was never an issue, although five wickets fell along the way. Phil Arnold scored a magnificent 152 not out to pretty much single-handedly secure a win for the fourth team. Keith Goodman and Tom Arnold had

done well with four wickets each after league leaders Wanstead & Snaresbrook had made a tremendous start. D Mead (70), B Mead (90) and Ahmad (48) had looked like they could set a target of over 300 although 257 was still an imposing total. Arnold’s brilliant innings took Chelmsford past the target with four balls to spare. The only team to lose were the fifths as Harold Wood proved a bit too strong. Barry Clayden (93) played well to at least secure full batting points but the visitors had little problem chasing down the runs as the bowling and fielding was disappointing. The sixth team got a game and won at Leigh on Sea. Henry Pearce made a hard-earned 40 and Ben Turner a rapid half century in Chelmsford’s 162. Leigh finished 10 runs short with Sam Tremelling’s three wickets proving very important. There was also another win for the Warsop T20 side to secure a place at the Final’s Day. Although Lee Cranmer’s 33 was the highest score, useful contributions throughout took the score to 165 for eight. An economical spell from Aaron Beard put Terling well behind the rate and the position was worsened by Tom Halsey (3-6). The innings was closed out for 96 with Ben Clifford (3-2) blowing away the lower order.

battle for triples crown

T

HE annual men’s invitation triples competition hosted by Brentwood Bowling Club on Sunday, June 28, was the most thrilling on record with only two points separating the top seven of 24 Essex teams taking part. Each team played five games of seven ends and at the awards ceremony, Brentwood captain Richard Rose told participants: “It’s been incredibly close ... I’ve never known anything like it.” The first prize of £300 went to South Benfleet who finished on 62 points, one clear of their nearest rivals. Runners-up Gidea Park B and third place winners Aveley tied on 61 and the prizes of £150 and £90 were allocated on shot difference. Once again, the competition at King George’s Playing Fields was organised by Brentwood Bowling

Club vice-captain Fred Wasmuth who thanked main sponsors Bentley Crematorium and Cemetery, and drinks distributors Hills Prospect who sponsored a fundraising raffle. Wasmuth congratulated the 72 bowlers taking part and everyone who had helped to make the day possible; Peter Hayward and his team for the food stall, scorekeeper Mark Rose, raffle organiser

Brenda Watson, lady members who prepared lunch and refreshments, and Cliff Jaycock and Brian Martin who manned the bar. On behalf of the visitors, Jordan Fleming from Brentwood-based Kings Chase gave a vote of thanks to Fred Wasmuth for all his hard work. Results: South Benfleet 62, Gidea Park B 61, Aveley 61,

Stock and Buttsbury 61, Silverthorn 60, Gidea Park A 60, Kings Chase A 60, Runwell Hospital 51, Kings Chase B 49, Kings Chase C 46, Ingatestone 45.5, Hockley 45, Gidea Park C 39, Liberty B 38, Liberty A 37.5, Corringham B 37, Clockhouse B 34, Harold Hill 34, Orsett 33, Clockhouse A 24, Corringham A 23, Warley Hill 23, Central Essex 19, Upminster 17.

First team beat league leaders with first ball wicket 1ST TEAM

Wanstead & Snaresbrook 217 all out Chelmsford 221-1 (Chelmsford won by 9 wickets) Shepherd Neame Essex League Premier Division Played at Overton Drive

CHELMSFORD travelled to league leaders Wanstead, knowing that they were in need of a positive result. Sam Cook responded by removing John Chambers with the first ball of the match. The early introduction of Aaron Beard into the attack brought immediate dividends as, after already having had a close lbw appeal turned down, he dismissed Akram to earn his first League wicket for two years. Following these early breakthroughs, Prabhakar and Chowdhury (42) combined to form an excellent partnership and frustrate the fielding side. The introduction of the spin pairing of James Clifford and Karamat Ali brought quick results, at first restricting scoring and then Ali had Chowdhury stumped smartly by Chris Prowting. Ali struck again to remove Adnan

Akram and the returning Anthony Hill (3-57) struck three times in quick succession to swing the game firmly in Chelmsford’s favour, although some sensible batting from Ellis-Grewal and Khan they finished on 217 all out. The Chelmsford reply was fast and furious, with the score racing to 20 within the first two overs. Nick Bailey decided that this was not enough, and needlessly chipped a wide delivery to cover to bring together the pairing of Dan Hagen and Nick Prowting. Both batsmen showed positive intent, looking to capitalise on any loose deliveries and begin to score freely. Hagen finished unbeaten on 88, only slightly bettered by Prowting who managed to complete an unbeaten century. 2ND TEAM

Chelmsford 227-9 Upminster 160 all out

(Chelmsford won by 67 runs) Shepherd Neame Essex League Premier Division Played at Chelmer Park

WINNING the toss and choosing to bat, Chelmsford lost both openers in

the first eight overs to leave them on 22 for two. Rob Catchpole (36) and Gary Chidley (68) repaired the damage with a good partnership of 96 in 21 overs before they were both dismissed. This set off a collapse of four wickets in the space of three overs which reduced Chelmsford to 131 for six with 14 overs left. Fortunately, Lee Cranmer (30) led the lower order in a spirited fight back, with all of the tail-enders contributing to such good effect that 96 runs were added, enabling Chelmsford to close on 227 for nine. Needing to score at just over five an over, Upminster’s batsmen struggled to assert themselves. The first wicket fell in the 10th over and thereafter the scoring rate declined and further wickets fell. With 19 overs left, Upminster on 103 for four, leaving a further 125 required. However, Liam Keaney (2-33) with two wickets in four balls, followed by a further wicket in the next over from Tom Halsey (2-34) effectively ended the contest. The last two batsmen did not last as

Upminster subsided to 160 all out. The wickets were shared with Rob Hayto (2-30) and Ben Clifford (2-24). 3RD TEAM

Hainault & Clayhall 185 all out Chelmsford 189-5

(Chelmsford won by 5 wickets) Shepherd Neame Essex League Premier Division Played at Oakfield

THIS was an efficient performance from Chelmsford with David Thrift and Vit Sapaetharan showing good form. The game got off to an extraordinary start with James Arnold bowling a pretty poor over that resulted in a wicket maiden and Craig Thompson bowling a pretty good over in which 19 runs were garnered. Singh (25) hit a flurry of boundaries but a misjudged shot saw him off and Thompson and Alistair Fergus gained some control over the scoring. Despite good bowling, the batsmen were enjoying some good fortune and the odd escape. Yasir launched the odd big shot which was coming off for him. Neal Abhyankar finally broke the fourth wicket pair and then got

the important wicket of Yasir (49) to a juggling catch from Chris Drain. The runs came very quickly for Chelmsford with Thrift in good touch and a good smattering of extras. Sam Trowell (28) played some fine strokes before a rather casual shot ended his innings. James Arnold and Steve Bond (20) completed the job without further alarms except from the ever pessimistic Fergus. 4TH TEAM Wanstead & Snaresbrook 257-9 Chelmsford 259-4
